The Lexus Creates initiative continues with a sketching workshop from General Manager of Design Koichi Suga. This is the third installment of the ongoing content series from the luxury marque, which is a social-media driven program that engages participants in activities that both inform and delight. The series’ topics are related to the Lexus brand hallmarks of design and craftsmanship and spotlight a range of creative Lexus partners. For this episode, Suga helps the viewer enjoy the drawing basics involved in properly illustrating a vehicle, guiding the amateur enthusiast to sketch the Lexus LC 500 flagship coupe.

“As a designer, drawing has been a core skill for as long as I can remember, and I have enjoyed the level of creativity it allows. People think that the skill is unique and specialized, but I tell them that anyone can learn to draw and enjoy it as a wonderful free-form expression. Regardless of style or ability level, there are very valid emotional and mental benefits I feel people can engage from any creative expression. In the video workshop, Suga walks the viewer through a step-by-step master class in basic automotive sketching. With just paper and pencil, the Lexus design chief uses simple strokes and easy-to-follow instruction that brings the LC 500 to life and reveals the process behind automotive design that is nothing short of amazing.

“While I have been involved in vehicle design for decades, I still find that the drawing is still as enjoyable and stress relieving as when I used to first imagine vehicles when I was school age.” Indeed, Suga points out that in these times, a creative exercise is a welcome distraction.

Koichi Suga served as the chief designer of the fifth-generation Lexus LS, the luxury lifestyle brand’s flagship sedan. His creative edge led the sedan’s sleek and bold design and continued effort to evolve the brand’s brave design language.
