One of the most advanced innovations is the introduction of Interactive Manual Drive, a virtual gear shift system that brings emotion to the daily drive, creating a deeper and more meaningful dialogue between driver and car.

Interactive Manual Drive opens up new opportunities for driving enjoyment by creating virtual gear shifts, either in response to the driver’s use of the accelerator, or manual selection using paddle controls on the steering wheel. The advanced system mimics the dynamic sensations of a combustion engine. The shifts are accompanied by appropriate changes in a virtually tuned engine note, to build a multi-sensory experience.

Operating the system

Interactive Manual Drive has been introduced in the new Lexus RZ F SPORT model, adding to the emotional appeal generated by the car’s dynamic styling and performance. The driver can engage the system simply by pressing the M mode button on the centre console.

Gear shifts are then automatically created, according to throttle use and vehicle speed. The driver’s digital instrument display changes to show a new meter that combines a power meter and a tachometer, indicating the shift points, or the optimum moment for the driver to make a manual shift using the paddle controls – right hand for upshifts, left hand for downshifts.

How Interactive Manual Drive works

The core component in the Interactive Manual Drive is a virtual powertrain and transmission integrated in the car’s BEV ECU. Virtual power source torque is calculated according to the driver’s pressure on the accelerator and the vehicle’s speed. This is then multiplied by the virtual gear that has been selected. Torque thus changes with the virtual gear selection to suit the driving situation – for example when shifting to a lower gear on a twisty road or an uphill climb. The result is a driving experience that is like using a rapid-shifting transmission attached to a combustion engine.

The drive force can also be managed by the driver’s use of the paddle shifts, which produce a quick and responsive shifting experience, generating deeper interaction between driver and car.

Using the shifts, the driver receives rewarding multi-sensory feedback in real time through throttle response, G-forces, engine sound simulation, and the tachometer display.

Sound generation

The sound generated by the system is specific to the Interactive Manual Drive and has been precision-tuned to generate more driving pleasure and an exhilarating experience. There are three sound levels to choose from, to suit the drive and driver’s mood.

The sounds produced are closely synchronised with the vehicle’s speed and drive torque and are relayed through speakers in the RZ’s cabin, adding to the dynamic and immersive driving.

A duality of driving experiences

With Interactive Manual Drive, Lexus gives the driver freedom to adapt the driving experience to suit the scene or their mood. Uniquely, they can choose the smooth, comfortable, powerful performance that is characteristic of Lexus BEVs, or opt for a style that delivers more visceral excitement and engagement.

lexus,rz,rzfsport,interactive manual drive

It constantly explores opportunities to raise levels of safety, performance, comfort and, not least, driver rewards. It’s in this spirit that it has successfully introduced the Lexus-first steer-by-wire system, a radical technology that brings a new dimension to the driving experience.

Making its debut in the new RZ electric luxury SUV, Lexus steer-by-wire offers a duality of rewards. It delivers the control, precision and instant, faithful response that are valued by the world’s top professional drivers. At the same time, it is smooth and easy to use and generates a reassuring sense of constant connection with the road, building the driver’s dialogue with their vehicle and enhancing the pure pleasure of being at the wheel.

As well as being responsive and intuitive to operate, the system filters out unwanted vibration, opens up the cockpit for a clearer forward view and enhances the pure pleasure of driving.

Furthermore, steer-by-wire is a core technology in the development of next-level autonomous driving.

The technology: steering by electronic signals

Unlike a conventional mechanical steering system, Lexus’ steer-by-wire has no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, the driver’s steering inputs are communicated as electronic signals, relayed via a steering torque actuator to a steering control actuator on the front axle. Response is quick and direct, inspiring confidence.

Safeguards are in place, with a back-up system that will intervene immediately to provide uninterrupted performance, should the steering system experience any issues.

The new-look steering wheel

The driver uses a compact, new-look steering wheel. Designed without the traditional upper and lower curved sections, it is visually like the controls found in an aircraft. This not simply a design exercise: steer-by-wire allows for the lock-to-lock turn angle to be set to plus or minus 200 degrees. Steering thus becomes easier, with the need for hand-over-hand turns almost eliminated. Just small movements are all that’s required, with the driver “aiming” the car in the direction they want to travel.

The wheel’s compact dimensions have allowed for the driver’s cockpit to be opened up, with a clearer, uninterrupted view of the road ahead and more space between the wheel and their legs.

This further enhances the fundamental qualities of the “Tazuna” concept cockpit design, which prioritises the driver’s forward focus by organising controls, instruments and information displays so they can be used with minimal movement of hand or eye.

Steering that adapts to the situation

Lexus’ steer-by-wire has the added benefit of a variable steering gear ratio that automatically optimises performance according to vehicle speed.

Steering operates at a lower ratio in low-speed situations, making manoeuvring effortless when turning at an intersection or navigating a parking space. At medium speeds, for example when driving on winding roads, only minimal inputs are required for nimble, exhilarating and fun-to-drive performance. And at high speed, the ratio is automatically increased to promote stable vehicle behaviour and a confident driving experience.

Feedback from the road

As well as receiving electronic signals from the steering wheel, the Steering Control Actuator senses forces generated from the road surface. It is able to filter out unwanted vibrations, for example from the brakes or generated by sudden tyre movements on uneven surfaces, and transmit feedback to the steering wheel via the Steering Torque Actuator.

This means the driver still receives authentic and accurate feedback. A clear steering feel gives them a constant sense of connection with the road and a natural sense of how the car is behaving.

With steer-by-wire, the wheels are also less likely to move contrary to the driver’s intention, even when driving on slopes.

Compatibility with battery electric technology

As well as being able to adjust operation according to the driving situation, the steer-by-wire works in combination with Lexus’ precise and highly responsive DIRECT4 electric all-wheel drive system. Together, they produce closer, more rewarding synchronisation of the driver’s actions and the car’s behaviour, raising the level of driving rewards.

Lexus steer-by-wire is available now, provided as standard on the new RZ 550e F SPORT, together with DIRECT4 electric all-wheel drive and the groundbreaking new Interactive Manual Drive. It is also available as an option, with DIRECT4, on the new RZ 500e Luxury model.

lexus,rz,rzfsport,steer-by-wire,Innovative

Charging performance has been enhanced, benefiting from Lexus’ long-established expertise in electrified technologies.

The RZ also reinforces Lexus’ status as a technology pioneer, being the first model to offer the combination of a full steer-by-wire system with a radical new-design steering wheel. This provides intuitive operation, good visibility, and ease of handling with responsive performance and reassuring feedback to the driver.

Furthermore, the new RZ F SPORT marks the debut of Lexus’ Interactive Manual Drive, a virtual gear shift system that replicates the performance, sound and feel of a manual transmission in a fully electric vehicle.

As well as delivering more power across all models in the new range, the RZ also achieves higher efficiency, reflected in increased driving ranges and reduced charging times.

At heart, the RZ remains a vehicle that is rich in Lexus craftsmanship with details that reflect the brand’s Omotenashi approach to on-board hospitality, making life as comfortable, safe, and convenient for driver and passengers alike. Dynamically, the latest enhancements reinforce the Lexus Driving Signature, giving the driver confidence, control and comfort at all times.

The new RZ is part of a Lexus BEV programme that is delivering three model reveals by March 2026, including the all-new ES sedan, unveiled in April, and an all-new model, details of which will be announced later. Together, these models will strengthen Lexus’ multi-path approach to electrified powertrains, providing customers with technology choices appropriate for the personal needs and their local market conditions and infrastructure.

The new RZ range will be introduced in dealerships across Europe from late 2025.

NEW RZ DEVELOPMENT GOALS: CHIEF ENGINEER SHINYA ITO

Shinya Ito, Chief Engineer of the new RZ, has given a personal insight into the development goals for the new RZ and the ambitions behind its introduction of advanced EV performance and handling technologies.

The project had three principal goals: to use electrification technologies to create an enjoyable driving experience; to focus on basic BEV performance to enhance the RZ’s usability; and to build anticipation for what lies ahead for Lexus.

Explaining Lexus’ mission for the new RZ, he said: “We want to show that electric vehicles are not just about selling new cars, but also offering various experiential values through electrification technology.”

He emphasised the need to deliver significant improvements in range and to adapt the vehicle platform to accommodate more batteries. The Lexus brand is at the forefront of Toyota’s electrification technology, enabling it to explore new values not only in cars but also in the wider mobility experience.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

New RZ engineered to deliver the rewarding, confident and exhilarating performance of the Lexus Driving Signature

Detailed adjustment of the suspension and enhanced body rigidity produce responsiveness, stability and comfort

Evolution of Lexus’ intelligent DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system

Delivering the Lexus Driving Signature

Lexus engineers every model in its range to deliver the Lexus Driving Signature, a unified driving experience in which the driver enjoys comfort, confidence and control at all times. Strategic measures applied to the new RZ reinforce this quality, with the exhilarating performance characteristics that can be achieved with battery electric vehicle technology and engineering.

Structural rigidity has been increased with improvements around the front radiator support: increased plate thickness and strengthened joints. Meanwhile, the addition of a rear brace helps reduce localised torsional deformation. These measures support a clean and linear response to steering inputs.

Suspension

The suspension system – front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones – benefits from fine adjustment to the front and rear dampers and springs to promote dynamic performance and achieve a good balance between handling stability and ride comfort. The front bushing has been optimised to obtain more direct steering response.

Other new details include a weight-saving reshaping of the lower front suspension arm and new internal parts in the hub bearing, measures which help optimise the driving range. The steering gearbox mount has also been adjusted to render the system more rigid and responsive.

Evolution of Lexus DIRECT4

The performance of Lexus’ DIRECT4 vehicle motion control technology has been revised, further enhancing the traction and stability performance of the new RZ all-wheel drive models.

The intelligent system automatically controls the distribution of power delivery to the front and rear eAxles, according to the driving conditions and driver inputs.

The range of torque distribution has been extended by increasing the output of the BEV system, so that at start-off and in straight-line acceleration, front/rear power distribution is controlled between 60:40 to 0:100, suppressing pitching and producing a direct acceleration feel. During cornering, the distribution ratio is optimised between 80:20 and 0:100, according to vehicle speed and steering angle, to match the driving conditions.

During turn-in, more power is directed to the front axle to achieve a smooth turn. When exiting a corner, torque distribution is in line with the load on each wheel, to maintain vehicle balance and allow for smooth acceleration. The result is a rewarding feel when cornering and precise line tracing.

When the driver selects Range mode to maximise efficiency, the front/rear balance is maintained at 50:50.

The adoption of Lexus’ Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM, an option on Luxury AWD model and standard on F SPORT) contributes to a flatter, more comfortable ride, together with enhanced driving stability and emergency hazard avoidance handling.

Body rigidity

A high level of body rigidity and connection throughout the entire body is key to achieving responsive performance, faithful to the driver’s inputs. Original development of the RZ ensured a very rigid structure, helped by the placement of the battery low down, within the wheelbase, and making the battery unit itself part of the vehicle’s frame.

Advanced construction techniques, including laser peening and laser welding technology, contributed to the rigidity, together with extensive use of high-strength adhesive and high-rigidity foam. Tower bracing and performance dampers further contribute to the car’s impressively tight and stable feel.

Lexus has taken the opportunity to refine the degree of rigidity with additional bracing between the lower rear body and the rear wheel houses. The strength and rigidity of the radiator support at the side has also been increased, benefiting handling stability.

Development and testing at Shimoyama

Lexus continues to use the purpose-built facilities at its new Shimoyama base in Japan to test all aspects of the RZ’s performance. Here, the different product development teams work in close collaboration to produce effective, co-ordinated enhancements. As well as using advanced digital, computerised techniques, the teams are able to fine-tune vehicle performance and ensure delivery of the Lexus Driving Signature using the extensive on-site test tracks.

A UNIQUE DRIVING EXPERIENCE WITH LEXUS’ FIRST STEER-BY-WIRE SYSTEM

First application of new Lexus technology

No mechanical link between steering wheel and wheels - steering inputs are relayed by electric signals

Responsive, safe and controllable performance, adapting automatically to the driving conditions

New steering wheel shape provides comfortable, intuitive operation, increases the driver’s field of forward vision and opens up more space in a new-look cockpit

The new RZ is the first model to adopt Lexus’ new steer-by-wire system. Intuitive, easy and comfortable to use, it creates a stronger connection between driver and vehicle. It also transforms the traditional cockpit lay-out with a new-shape steering wheel that opens up more space around the driver.

Steer-by-wire operation

The new system differs fundamentally from a conventional steering system in having no mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels. Instead, the driver’s steering inputs are relayed by electric signals from a torque actuator to a control actuator.

Performance is safe, confidence-inspiring and highly responsive, with dynamic steering gear adjustment according to the vehicle’s speed. This makes for easier manoeuvring at low speed; agile response for smooth driving on winding roads; and confidence-inspiring stability in high-speed motorway cruising.

On a conventional system, the driver may need to make two or three full turns of the wheel to move from lock to lock. On the new Lexus system, only a 200-degree turn of the new-shape steering wheel (details below) is needed to move from neutral to full left or right lock, so hand-over-hand/crossed arm movements are almost eliminated.

Although there is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels, the driver enjoys appropriate and rewarding steering feedback – communicated by electric signals – with unpleasant vibrations filtered out. Capacity has increased to 77 kWh.

The construction of the battery cells has been revised and their number has been increased to enable higher output from the eAxles. This has been achieved without changing the pack’s external dimensions, so that it remains located wholly beneath the vehicle floor.

The battery benefits from a new water-cooling system that helps maximise output and suppress cell deterioration, even under high-load conditions. This would include, for example rapid charging after repeated or lengthy fast acceleration, uphill driving, heavy trailer towing* and off-road driving.

The cooling system’s controls are efficiently co-ordinated with the RZ’s air conditioning system, so that refrigerant or radiator cooling sources are used, in line with the external temperature. The cooler is placed in close contact with the battery and cools from the bottom to achieve efficient, uniform performance.

*Towing capacity: RZ 350e 750kg; RZ 500e 1,500kg.

Reduced charging times

Charging performance has been improved thanks to the introduction of the new battery pack and the adoption of a more powerful 22 kW onboard charger as standard, replacing the previous 11 kW unit. This anticipates the wider availability of public fast-charging infrastructure.

To improve charging times in cold climates, the new RZ is equipped with a new battery pre-conditioning system. This can be used to bring the battery up to optimum temperature before charging starts. This is of particular value in cold temperatures, where a significant reduction in charging time can be achieved. Lexus estimates a 10 to 80% charge can be accomplished in 30 minutes using the pre-conditioning function, compared to 55 minutes without (at -10°C).

It can be operated manually, using a control in the multimedia system, or automatically when a charging location has been set as route waypoint or destination in the navigation system. A timer setting can also be used so that heating can scheduled for a specific journey.

The battery heater’s performance has been improved by adjusting the location of the coolant heater and heat exchanger, helping reduce charging times in cold weather.

Enhanced eAxle performance

Detailed changes have been made to the RZ’s eAxle to reduce internal losses and deliver higher motor output with quieter performance.

The unit’s compact proportions help optimise the car’s packaging, ensuring generous interior space. At the front, its shortened length provides better protection in a collision, while in the all-wheel drive models, the lower height of the rear unit allows for more load space and a flat floor. Its proportions also helped the RZ’s designers ensure the battery could be fully accommodated beneath the vehicle floor. In the new RZ, the height of the rear eAxle has been further lowered by relocating the number two shaft.

Other new measures include using a ball-type bearing, allowing for a more compact three-shaft gear module, which helps reduce internal losses. Surface polishing of the gear teeth has also reduced energy losses while giving more precise and quieter operation.

Both front and rear eAxles have a revised lubrication system which has dispensed with the need for a mechanical pump.

The inverter adopts silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, which help deliver both higher output and improved efficiency.

Equal scrutiny has been paid to the electric motor construction. The rotor’s size and weight have been reduced while adjusting its magnet locations has enabled both high rpm and output to be achieved. Fine-tuning of the stator coil has enhanced torque and reduced losses and power consumption.

Driving range

The comprehensive technical revisions to the BEV system also deliver an increase in the new RZ driving range. The reduction of losses within the eAxle, the increase in the battery capacity and optimisation of the control systems make key contributions to the improved range capability.

Lexus’ predicted performance figures show substantial increases compared to the current RZ’s performance – up to an additional 95 km in the case of the FWD model with 18-inch wheels (full provisional data in the table above).

LIFE ON BOARD: QUIETNESS AND COMFORT

Additional sound insultation and soundproofing measures make all parts of the cabin even quieter than before

Cabin quality enhanced with Lexus-first laser-cut Ultrasuede graphics and ambient lighting with new Dynamic Shadow moving pattern effect

Quieter than ever before

As a BEV, the RZ is a fundamentally quiet vehicle, but Lexus goes further to ensure the cabin is as well insulated as possible from noise and vibration to provide a calm, comfortable and cocooning environment.

Extra, detailed measures have been applied in the new RZ to achieve exceptional quietness. As a result, not only has the sound pressure level been reduced, but the texture and balance of the tone have also been improved in both the front and rear cabin, and the load compartment.

The latest adoptions include a new floor silencer behind the rear seats and the use of a new high-damping adhesive in the floor to reduce vibrations. There is also a new resin cover under the front moulding and higher-performance soundproofing material in the trims, garnishes and back door.

The detailed scrutiny of all the interior elements has also produced a change to the tonneau cover, which has an additional soundproofing felt layer.

These are in addition to the RZ’s existing measures to combat noise and vibration, including an all-round bonnet seal, vibration-damping foam around the front and centre pillars and acoustic glass in the front and rear doors. The front-wheel drive models further benefit from a dedicated rear subframe design.

Vibration from the powertrain has been reduced with a new motor mount design with high damping characteristics.

Laser-patterned upholstery

Lexus has created the first interior trim to feature graphics applied by laser to Ultrasuede, an upholstery textile made from sustainable, 30% plant-based material. They can enjoy a deeper dialogue and connection with their car, controlling drive force by using paddle shift controls on the steering wheel to select virtual gears.

The experience is heightened with real-time feedback through the throttle, G forces, reproduced motor sounds and a tachometer display with a curving bar read-out to indicate the virtual rpm.

The system is engaged simply by pressing an “M mode” switch on the centre console. The operation can also be used in conjunction with drive mode selection. . When Sport mode is selected, acceleration is more agile in response to accelerator inputs than in Normal mode.

Drive force output has an eight speed virtual gear set up, which allow swift and pleasing virtual shifting using the paddle controls. Virtual power source torque is calculated according to the driver’s pressure on the accelerator and the vehicle speed; this is then multiplied by the virtual gear that has been selected.

A shift guide meter that combines information from the tacho and power meters helps the driver intuitively understand the vehicle’s state at any time and optimise their up and down shifts, in line with their use of the accelerator.

Performance handling

Specific measures have been applied to ensure the F SPORT’s extra power translates into rewarding handling and performance.

In addition to the steps taken to enhance the RZ’s body rigidity (details above), the F SPORT has additional bracing around the radiator support and an extra brace in the rear end structure. The sides of the radiator support are also more rigid with the use of a thicker panel and additional welding points, creating a strong joint between the support and the upper member. These measures strengthen the body and suppress deformation, helping sharpen steering and chassis response.

The suspension has been revised for sportier performance, with retuning of the shock absorber damping force and the spring rates.

The model also benefits from Lexus’ Vehicle Dynamics Intelligent Management (VDIM). This co-ordinates operation of the ABS, brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control and other braking control functions so the driver can enjoy the car’s full handling potential.

Exterior styling

The F SPORT stands apart from other models in the RZ range with powerful exterior styling details that express its performance profile while also enhancing aero performance, stability and cooling.

The functional features include air ducts in the lower front bumper that direct cooling air towards the brake callipers. The bumper moulding gains a fin-shape section, which directs air flow down the side of the vehicle, benefiting stability and steering response.

At the rear, the F SPORT gains an additional spoiler along the bottom edge of the back window, a dedicated rear diffuser design and pontoon shapes in the bumper. These combine to generate a rewarding feel of the car being firmly in contact with the ground, stable handling and prompt steering responses.

The F SPORT rides on 20-inch aero wheels that have an alloy frame and a resin cover. The lightweight construction is also aerodynamically efficient, helping maximise the car’s power efficiency. Striking blue-finished F SPORT brake callipers are visible through the spokes of the wheels.

Colour options for the F SPORT will include a new Neutrino Grey, in both bi-tone and monotone finishes.

Interior features

The F SPORT cabin is finished in black and dark grey, designed to evoke a sporty feel and quiet strength. The battery electric luxury SUV benefits from comprehensive revisions that take the driving experience to a higher level, introducing innovative technologies that deliver more power, enhanced control and deeper driver engagement and rewards. These ground-breaking changes are accompanied by further refinement of the luxurious onboard experience.

Lexus has been a pioneer in electrification in the luxury market since the launch of the RX 400h in 2005, consistently pursuing a balance between driving quality and engagement and environmental efficiency. With its Lexus Electrified vision, announced in 2019, it is aiming to achieve a carbon-neutral society by offering a range of vehicle technologies, including battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid, to meet the diverse needs of its customers and markets.

The RZ was launched in 2023 as Lexus’ first model constructed on a dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) global architecture platform. It offered a new driving experience and design made possible by electrification technology. In 2024, the range was extended with the introduction of a front-wheel drive model, responding to customer demand.

Development of the new RZ focused on four key pillars: driving pleasure; driving range and battery charging; performance; and design.

The technical innovations are led by the first application of Lexus’ steer-by-wire system. This provides a new driving experience with smooth, easy and more intuitive operation, particularly when enjoying winding roads. It is also tuned for responsiveness and driver feedback that is free from unwelcome vibrations. To ensure the desired qualities of the Lexus Driving Signature were achieved, the car underwent extensive development at Lexus’ Shimoyama test centre in Japan.

The new model range also brings F SPORT performance and style to the RZ for the first time. The all-wheel drive RZ 550e is the most powerful RZ and offers a new BEV driving experience with Lexus’ Interactive Manual Drive, an electronic system that provides virtual manual gear shifting (further details of the RZ F SPORT in the dedicated chapter, below).

As is always the case with Lexus, the customer has been the prime consideration in ensuring that as well as delivering extra power, the RZ is more efficient and delivers an enhanced user experience. Comprehensive changes to the BEV system, including revisions to the lithium-ion battery for high output and capacity and an evolution of Lexus’ eAxle, allow for an expected increase in driving range of up to 100km (depending on the model and final homologation).

In addition, battery charging time will be quicker, - aided by the adoption of a new battery pre-conditioning system and 22 kW AC onboard charger.

The global reveal paves the way for the new RZ’s European market introduction from autumn 2025.

Completely revised BEV system

The RZ’s battery electric system has undergone complete revision, with a focus on raising the quality of both practicality and driving pleasure. Key changes include the introduction of a new eAxle with improved motor output and inverter efficiency and a significant reduction in losses. There is also a new lithium-ion battery with capacity increased to 77.0 kWh.

With higher output and more model options, the new RZ will extend its market reach, catering for a wider spectrum of customer needs and preferences.

The performance of the high-output lithium-ion battery has been enhanced by improving and increasing the number of battery cells. In turn, this enables higher output from the eAxle’s electric motor. For the customer, this brings not only improved full-throttle acceleration and top speed performance, but it also contributes to a more exhilarating and responsive drive in the mid-range.

High power performance is further supported by the adoption of water cooling for the battery and BEV system.

Combining the high-output battery and eAxle with different systems has produced an RZ range with three different power options: 224 DIN hp/165 kW in the RZ 350e; 380 DIN hp/280 kW in the RZ 500e; and 408 DIN hp/300 kW in the RZ 550e F SPORT.

In addition, there is a doubling in the towing capacity of the all-wheel drive RZ, which can now pull braked loads of up to 1,500 kg.

Increased driving range

The technical enhancements to the RZ’s powertrain yield a significant improvement in the driving range, notably the reduction of power losses in the eAxle, the increased battery capacity and optimisation of the control systems. Provisional data show the new RZ’s range has been increased by up to 100 km (depending on model and final homologation).

Reduced charging times

Charging performance has also been enhanced, thanks to the increase in battery capacity, revisions to the battery pack structure and the adoption of a new 22 kW AC onboard charger, anticipating the wider provision of public infrastructure that supports faster charging.

Charging in low temperatures has been improved with a new battery pre-conditioning function. This optimises the battery temperature before charging starts, eliminating delays. As a result, charging time should be reduced by around 30 minutes.

A unique driving experience with Lexus’ steer-by-wire system

The new RZ is the first model to adopt Lexus’ new steer-by-wire system. This creates a new, intuitive and comfortable driving experience that seamlessly integrates driver and vehicle. It also transforms the traditional driver’s cockpit.

Instead of being completely round, the steering wheel is designed without the upper and lower sections so is almost rectangular in shape, with curved grips on the left and right sides. The design helps focus the driver’s attention on the road ahead and, being compact, it frees up more space around the knees and legs for easier entry and exit to the car.

The system operates in a range of approximately 200 degrees from neutral to full left or right lock. This gives the driver precise control and easy operation.

Also, with steering gear ratio dynamically adjusted according to vehicle speed, it provides easier manoeuvrability at low speeds; agility for smooth driving on winding roads; and a high level of stability in high-speed motorway driving.

Although there is no physical link between the steering wheel and the axles, the driver receives appropriate feedback communicated by electric signals, minimising unpleasant vibrations.

An evolution of Lexus DIRECT4 drive control

As well as renewing the RZ’s BEV system, Lexus has revised the DIRECT4 vehicle motion control technology, a system unique to Lexus which enhances traction and stability performance on the all-wheel drive models.

At start-off and in straight-line acceleration, front/rear power distribution is controlled between 60:40 to 0:100 to suppress pitching and produce a direct acceleration feel.

The adoption of Lexus’ Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) contributes to a flatter, more comfortable ride , together with enhanced driving stability and emergency hazard avoidance handling.

Delivering the Lexus Driving Signature

It is Lexus’ mission to ensure every model in its range delivers the Lexus Driving Signature, a unified driving experience in which the driver enjoys comfort, confidence and control at all times. Strategic measures applied to the new RZ reinforce this quality.

Structural rigidity has been increased with improvements to the radiator support and the addition of a rear brace. This helps reduce localised torsional deformation, contributing in turn to clean and linear steering response.

The suspension system benefits from fine adjustment to the front and rear dampers and springs to promote dynamic performance, stability and ride comfort.

The pursuit of quietness and comfort

Exceptional quietness in the cabin is a key quality of Lexus BEVs and with the new RZ Lexus is going further with the installation of additional features, soundproofing and sound absorption measures. These include a new floor silencer beneath the rear seats and enhanced soundproofing in multiple locations. To address road and wind noise, soundproofing has been introduced for the tonneau cover, back door trim and load compartment. Action has also been taken to further suppress vibrations.

New techniques in interior design

Lexus has created the first cabin trim to feature laser-processed graphics applied to Ultrasuede. Made from sustainable 30% plant-based materials, the Ultrasuede door panel trim creates a new luxury expression.

In another first, the multi-colour ambient lighting has a new, dynamic shadow effect. This creates changing patterns that evoke the passage of time, fostering an emotional, comfortable connection with the car’s occupants. A new dimming function of the panoramic roof helps keep the cabin comfortable in bright sunshine. By reducing reflections, it has made it possible to use both the dimmable roof and an electronic rear-view mirror simultaneously.

THE NEW RZ 550e F SPORT

· F SPORT performance and styling introduced to the RZ range

· Maximum output 408 DIN hp/300 kW

· Lexus-first Interactive Manual Drive virtual gear shifting

· DIRECT4 all-wheel drive

The new RZ marks the introduction of an F SPORT model to the range for the first time, giving customers the option of a more exhilarating drive with a sportier styling and cabin ambience.

The 550e F SPORT is the most powerful RZ model, delivering a maximum 408 DIN hp/300 kW. To ensure this higher output is translated into rewarding and engaging performance, the suspension has been retuned with changes to the damper and spring settings.

Lexus-first Interactive Manual Drive

The F SPORT adopts the Lexus-first Interactive Manual Drive, giving the driver deeper interaction with the car, allowing them to control power output with paddle shift controls, as if using a manual transmission. Operation is accompanied by real-time feedback through the throttle and sounds and visuals that create a closer connection between man and machine.

The system is programmed with an eight-speed virtual gear set-up. Virtual power source torque is calculated according to the accelerator position and vehicle speed, then multiplied by the ratio of the virtual gear selected. To enhance the experience, Lexus has replicated engine sounds and the system operates with a rev limiter, so drivers have a sense of timing their gear shifts and the changes in the vehicle’s state they produce.

To help the driver perfect their shift timing, a shift guide meter in the instrument display indicates the vehicle’s status.

F SPORT exterior styling

The powerful exterior styling contributes to the RZ 550e F SPORT’s aerodynamic performance as well as making a bold visual statement. The function-driven features include front lower bumper mouldings, brake ducts, front and rear spoilers and rear bumper. The 20-inch aero-design wheels have an alloy base and aerodynamic resin covers. As well as improving energy efficiency by smoothing airflow, these also save weight.

The F SPORT model will be available in an exclusive new exterior colour, Neutrino Grey, a hard, solid finish with metallic highlights that will strike a strong contrast with the car’s black styling elements.

F SPORT interior styling

The F SPORT-dedicated interior is in Black x Dark Grey, with blue stitched accents, inspired by the powerful driving experience that is characteristic of BEVs. The design includes a trim panel with a Microgeometric pattern.

The front seats are made using an integrated foaming method to provide superior body holding performance. Other details include F SPORT scuff plates and steering wheel and an aluminium pedal set.

lexus,rz,rzfsport

Results released on September 6 show that Lexus’ battery electric SUV scores highly in all safety categories: 87% for adult occupant protection; 87% for child occupants; 84% for vulnerable road users; and 81% for the performance of its safety assist systems.

The organization highlights on its release that: “The Lexus RZ meets Euro NCAP’s expectations for all-around good crash protection for occupants representing a range of ages, heights, and sizes. The car is also equipped with the latest crash avoidance systems and comes with several new active safety innovations. The RZ is the first car that Euro NCAP rewards for Child Presence Detection technology under the latest 2023 rating regime (…) The child presence detection system, which warns when a child or infant may have been left in the car and is consequently potentially lifesaving in hot weather”.

The RZ has an inherently strong platform and body construction, with the battery unit integrated into the chassis, and takes care of passive safety with nine airbags as standard. Moreover, as all Lexus models, the RZ is equipped as standard with Lexus Safety System +, a comprehensive package of advanced safety and driver assistance systems.

In its latest, third generation, Lexus Safety System + benefits from upgrades and additions which increase the scope of risk detection. Key elements of the system include:

A Pre-Collision System (PCS) with radar and camera, to detect oncoming vehicles including motorcycles. With third-generation Lexus Safety System +, PCS can now also detect cyclists during night time. And with the new Intersection Turn Assist feature, it can detect oncoming vehicles when turning, as well as pedestrians crossing the street.

Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist both help keep the car correctly centred in its lane. In addition to reducing driving burden, this assists, when necessary, with steering operation.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control enables the driver to set the inter-vehicle distance and acceleration level. And with the new Curve Speed Reduction feature, the vehicle’s speed can now adjust automatically according to bend radius.

The Emergency Driving Stop System slows the vehicle to a stop within the lane if the driver becomes unable to operate the controls, for example because of sudden illness. While the system does this, it warns other road users by flashing the hazard lights.

To allow earlier activation of the Emergency Driving Stop System, Driver Monitor enables earlier detection of inappropriate driver states – such as distraction, poor posture, closed or unblinking eyes, or the movement of the driver’s head away from its usual position.

Proactive Driving Assist discreetly and gently assists the driver, most usually at lower speeds around town, through distance control between the vehicle and a preceding vehicle, and by providing steering and deceleration support in response to hazards such as pedestrians, cyclists, and parked vehicles.

Through such broad-ranging driver assistance technologies, Lexus strives to make vehicles such as the RZ among the safest on the road. However, his buildings offer far more than stark minimalism: he is known for creating harmonious spaces, bringing together his passion for rich texture and materials to shine a light on the small but impactful details of a space. Mies’ approach to design is mirrored in the RZ’s interior: less ornamentation creates expansive feelings, refined with premium materials.

The Barcelona Pavilion, which Mies designed in 1929 for the World Fair, was a peaceful, flowing space with rich marble walls and unique, custom-designed furniture. Located in the heart of a city renowned for its striking architecture, the Pavillion sets the perfect stage for the launch of a car that brings the power of personal luxury to all that get behind the wheel.

The All-New RZ is the first-ever dedicated Lexus Battery Electric Vehicle, built completely from the ground up, with technology and design at its core. Every element of the RZ has been carefully considered and optimised, through the lens of the Omotenashi philosophy of unparalleled hospitality, to ensure the most luxurious and enjoyable EV experience possible.

While the luxury car manufacturer’s first dedicated BEV is rooted in data and technology, the All-New RZ offers more than its expert engineering: an unrivalled driving experience. Centring on how the feeling of the drive is everything, the TVC follows a man at home in the Pavilion. He is surrounded by luxury items all discerningly chosen for both their elegance and high-tech capabilities, represented by data overlaid as text on the film.

As the man steps into the Lexus RZ on the driveway and begins his journey, the data is stripped away from the film, capturing that the feeling of the drive is everything.

The RZ encapsulates the advanced craftsmanship and considered design of the Lexus brand and elevates this to a new standard in premium driving experience. Every individual element of the vehicle has been carefully designed and brought together to create a whole new level of luxury, developed under the Lexus Driving Signature philosophy of Confidence, Control, and Comfort: engineered to set a new benchmark in terms of premium driving experience.

The RZ retains all of the signature qualities of performance and craftsmanship associated with Lexus, paired with great acceleration and an exhilarating driving experience, thanks to the Lexus-first combination of e-Axles and DIRECT4 all-wheel drive torque control.

In many of the same ways that the architects behind the Barcelona Pavilion considered every stone, joist, and fabric that they used to bring together the iconic final construction, the Lexus RZ is the bringing together of thousands of tiny but crucial elements of technology, craftsmanship and design to create the ultimate in luxury EV vehicles.

The new Lexus RZ campaign is available to view online at Lexus RZ | Lexus Europe and includes a television commercial, OOH advertising, digital advertising, CRM and social media content.

#Lexus

#LexusRZ

#TheDriveIsEverything

lexus,RZ450e,rz,2022 RZ

The intention is not simply to deliver the benefits of zero emission, all-electric driving, but to capture the potential of BEVs to reinvent the driving experience. To help achieve this, the car has undergone extensive track testing and refinement at the Shimoyama Centre in Japan, soon to be Lexus’ new global headquarters.

It is not a vehicle that simply adopts battery electric power in place of a conventional engine; it goes much further to realise the exciting potential of new technologies that enhance performance and driving pleasure, true to the Lexus Electrified philosophy.

Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe said: “The RZ has been developed with the aim of creating a uniquely Lexus BEV that feels secure to ride in, is pleasing to the touch and is exhilarating to drive.

“Our vision is to use electrification technology as a means to enhance fundamental vehicle performance, so that we can continue to pursue driving pleasure for all future generations.”

First and foremost, the RZ is a Lexus, retaining all the fine qualities of performance and craftsmanship associated with the brand. The company has leveraged its wealth of vehicle electrification experience to deliver the benefits of a BEV with the essential refinement and driving experience that are unique to its brand.

The RZ also marks the first application of Lexus’ new e-Axles, compact motor units used front and rear that work in conjunction with new DIRECT4 all-wheel electronic drive torque control. High-quality handling and responsiveness are secured with a dedicated new electric vehicle platform, which brings excellent body rigidity, a low centre of gravity and a long wheelbase. A powerful lithium-ion battery unit is fully integrated in the chassis, beneath the cabin floor, its quality finely controlled to ensure performance is maintained long-term.

The platform and battery electric drivetrain also open up new freedoms in design. The exterior reinterprets the signature Lexus spindle shape in the vehicle’s body, while the interior is a light and open space that is both simple and luxurious, expressing Lexus Omotenashi hospitality and Takumi craftsmanship.

With its zero-emission performance, the RZ will help Lexus in its progress towards carbon neutrality and a sustainable mobility society. Here, the focus is not just on the car’s performance on the road; it embraces its entire lifecycle, from parts procurement, manufacturing and ownership through to eventual disposal. Already new methods have been adopted at Lexus’ Motomachi factory, the RZ production centre, in the processes that produce the highest emissions.

Looking beyond its market introduction, the RZ is set to offer an enhanced driving experience with an optional by-wire steering system. Lexus’ new One Motion Grip, currently under development, will provide easier and even more precise steering without sacrificing important feedback from the road surface.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

‘Seamless e-Motion’ design expresses the performance, driving pleasure and refinement of an all-electric vehicle

Lexus signature spindle grille shape deeply integrated into the complete frontal design

Exterior dimensions position the RZ between the Lexus NX and RX models

Aerodynamic design details help optimise the RZ’s energy efficiency

Building a car on an all-new battery electric platform opened up new design opportunities and the freedom to create a look that sets the RZ 450e apart from other vehicles. At the same time, its styling is an evolution of Lexus “Next Chapter” design, embracing themes that can be seen in other new Lexus models, such as the RX.

The basic theme was seamless, emotional design inspired by the experience of driving a BEV. The RZ is instantly recognisable as both a Lexus and a BEV, with proportions that reflect its dynamic character.

The new, dedicated BEV platform and electric powertrain give the RZ a lower centre of gravity and allow for a lower nose profile. This is the starting point for a silhouette that flows through a smooth cabin section to a rearward peak in the roofline, giving more head room (67 mm) for rear seat passengers. A sleek horizontal door axis accentuates the long wheelbase and the large diameter 18 and 20-inch wheels are pushed out to the corners, expressing a wide stance and the low centre of gravity.

The RZ measures 4,805 mm long, with a 2,850 mm wheelbase and short overhangs – 995 mm front, 960 mm rear. Overall height is 1,635 mm and the width is 1,895 mm (excluding door mirrors). In terms of external dimensions and footprint, the model sits between Lexus’ mid-size NX and large RX crossover models.

In side view, the design creates volume around the front wheels, illustrating the power in the front axle, while the rear wheels are pushed back to give a “torqueful” look. The doors have contrasting forms and striking surface treatments, creating a seamless visual sweep from front to rear.

As with the recently launched all-new RX, the design sees the familiar spindle grille shape more deeply integrated into the complete frontal design, generating a stronger three-dimensional effect. As the electric powertrain requires less cooling airflow than a combustion engine, the familiar grille has been dispensed with. The area is instead finished in the car’s body colour, while the position of the slim headlamps and the blacking out of the bumper corners add emphasis to the central spindle shape, establishing a distinctive Lexus BEV look.

The new-design headlight units are unified with the spindle body. Ultra-slim, they accentuate the Lexus L-motif of the daytime running lights, while the principal headlight lamps and turn indicators are made less prominent.

The rear presents a cool, high-tech look with a split roof spoiler that extends the design’s rearward flow and contributes to the car’s stable performance.

The elongated LED light bar across the width of the car has become a hallmark feature of Lexus design. Here it wraps around the muscular rear quarters with a geometric pattern and has an exceptionally thin centre section that throws the new LEXUS script on the back door into sharp relief. The rear track is widened to 1,627 mm (+15 mm vs front track), further emphasising the car’s planted look.

Aerodynamic features

Aerodynamic measures were a key focus in achieving a low drag coefficient (0.263 Cd) that would contribute to the car’s energy efficiency.

The cabin shape has been optimised to gain smooth airflow on the outside and comfort inside. The belt moulding sits flush with the bodywork to help regulate the flow of air and keep the car stable. The rear spoiler design contributes to handling and stability in straight-line driving and cross-winds without producing drag. The back door is also shaped to adjust the angle of airflow from the roof, reducing drag and contributing to the driver’s sense of the car being in firm contact with the road.

A fully covered under floor is another drag-reducing factor, the front section with a dimpled surface that helps maintain stability at high speeds and rear featuring fins that direct airflow rearwards from the wheels. The small front grille aperture features shutters that close automatically when cooling air flow into the motor compartment isn’t required.

New colour options

The RZ is launched with a choice of exterior finishes that includes new Aether metallic, inspired by blue skies, and striking Sonic Copper. It’s also available in Sonic Chrome, Sonic Quartz, Sonic Iridium and Graphite Black. The sonic shades use an advanced paint technology in which pigment particles and metal flakes are highly compressed into micro-thin layers, contributing to deeper, more lustrous finish and stronger light and shade contrasts.

The RZ is available in a new bi-tone design which features a contrast black finish that extends from the front of the car, over the bonnet, pillars, and roof.

Wheels and tyres

The RZ is offered with two wheel sizes – 18 and 20-inch. The 18-inch wheels have a standard dark grey metallic finish but are also available as an accessory option in all-black. The 20-inch wheels are high gloss or contrast black/machined, according to grade specification. The 18-inch wheels are aerodynamically styled with aero-ventilating flaps on the face of each spoke.

The 20-inch rims – standard on high grade and optional elsewhere in the range – are expected to be the choice of about 80% of RZ customers in Europe.

Driving stability is supported by using different size tyres at the front and rear: 235/60R18 front and 255/55R18 rear for 18-inch wheels and 235/50R20 front and 255/45R20 rear for 20-inch wheels.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

RZ performance delivers the Lexus Driving Signature, characterized by Confidence, Control and Comfort

Lexus-first combination of e-Axles and DIRECT4 all-wheel drive torque control

Highly rigid body founded on new e-TNGA electric vehicle platform supports precise, prompt chassis response

One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system to be introduced on RZ in 2025

The Lexus Driving Signature

Securing the Lexus Driving Signature was the primary goal in the development of the RZ’s dynamic performance and strengthening the car’s core characteristics – the “three Cs” of confidence, control and comfort in all driving situations. Going further, the benefits of BEV-specific qualities, such as fast response and high precision were maximised. To achieve this, Lexus has been able to call its years of pioneering experience in electrified vehicle technologies, going back to the original RX 400h hybrid electric of 2004.

Lexus has ensured the vehicle always responds as the driver intends, making driving both comfortable and exhilarating., even for people who are not used to driving a BEV. The result is the addition of a BEV dimension to the Lexus Driving Signature – the refined, linear and reassuring responsiveness and rewarding feeling of control and connection with the vehicle that define the driving character of new Lexus vehicles.

This is true to the performance concept of “The Natural” adopted by chief engineer Takashi Watanabe and his team during the car’s development. They focused on driving quality with a natural feel, the car moving faithfully to the driver’s inputs through the optional One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system and precise DIRECT4 all-wheel drive control. Special attention was paid to giving the driver an excellent sightline and feedback and ensuring precise vehicle posture control, at all times.

Body structure

The RZ’s BEV-specific platform provides an inherently strong foundation on which to construct a vehicle with excellent body rigidity. Advanced techniques have been applied, including laser peening and laser screw welding for the rocker panels and joint reinforcement to suppress or prevent distortion. Laser welding allows a thicker rocker panel to be used, eliminating the cut-away sections required for spot-welding. Elsewhere, extensive use is made of structural adhesive (1.79 m in total), laser screw welding and short-pitch welding (at an unprecedented degree) to increase the jointing area and gain higher rigidity.

High-rigidity foam is used in each corner of the back door aperture to strengthen an area that is particularly susceptible to deformation. This also reduces noise and vibration. The rear of the car has a double-annular frame, which helps the car settle after cornering or changing lanes.

At the front, braces and thicker support pillars for the radiator suppress lateral deformation. Rigidity is further enhanced by suspension tower braces and front and rear performance dampers.

The driver witnesses the benefits of the car’s rigid structure in straight-line stability and precise handling and steering response, contributing to the control and confidence elements of the Lexus Driving Signature.

Weight-saving construction

Reinforcing the car’s structure increases weight, which in turn has an impact on power consumption and dynamic performance. To counter this, Lexus has used materials and methods to reduce the weight of the frame, helping maintain the driving range without compromising body rigidity. Priority was given to reducing the mass of parts located higher in the vehicle, to preserve a low centre of gravity and suppress body roll when cornering.

For example, lightweight 1470 MPa steel is used for the centre roof reinforcement and a patchwork material for strengthening the front and centre pillar. The bonnet is made of aluminium and the door and wheel arch mouldings and back door garnish are light, moulded resin which uses less material but remains rigid and light.

Noise and vibration control

Although the battery electric drivetrain produces less noise than one with an internal combustion engine, its quiet performance makes noise from the road and the car’s surroundings more noticeable. The RZ’s engineers and designers made it a priority to ensure the cabin environment was appropriately calm and quiet, applying a three-part strategy: controlling the noise; preventing it from entering the cabin; and paying particular attention to noise experienced in the rear seats.

The measures to reduce noise and vibration include an all-round seal for the bonnet, which prevents air flow escaping through gaps, reducing disturbance and sound. Inside the RZ, the thickness of the dashboard inner silence has been gauged to reduce the gap between peripheral parts and achieve better noise insulation and absorption.

The large roof area is a primary source of noise when driving. To address this, a vibration-damping sheet has been added that makes the roof structure more rigid, with a significant impact on NV levels. Other measures include foam coating at the base of the front and centre pillars, acoustic glass in the front and rear doors and the placement of liners and insulation material in the cowl, dashboard, bonnet, wings and wheel arches.

The RZ has a new version of active sound control which uses surround sound to introduce noise-cancelling frequencies into the cabin, via the audio speakers.

Efficient and compact electric e-Axle

The RZ is the first production model to feature Lexus’ new e-Axle, designed for use in BEVs. This is a compact, modular package which consists of a motor, gearing and a PCU (Power Control Unit), located between the driven wheels. The RZ uses both front and rear e-Axles, which work in conjunction with the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive control system (details below) to adjust the vehicle’s posture, traction and power distribution, according to the driving conditions. The e-Axles are quiet, efficient and deliver precise power.

The front motor produces 150 kW and the rear 80 kW, together delivering 230 kW maximum output. The RZ achieves excellent energy efficiency, with consumption rated at 16.8 kWh or 18.7 kWh per 100 km in the combined WLTP cycle, depending on wheel size and car specifications.

Their compact dimensions –short front e-Axle and low rear e-Axle - contribute to the car’s packaging, helping gain more room in the cabin and a low load compartment floor, and provide more space to accommodate the EV battery low down beneath the vehicle floor.

DIRECT4 all-wheel drive control

DIRECT4, an exclusive Lexus technology, is an intelligent system that constantly and seamlessly balances the drive torque between the front and rear axles. The result is stress-free performance and stable handling, with intuitive operation strengthening the sense of connection between driver and machine.

The system uses ECU (Engine Control Unit) sensors to collect, evaluate and react to a range of factors, including vehicle speed, steering angle and G forces. From these inputs, it calculates and immediately applies the appropriate drive torque to each e-Axle to maximise grip and traction suitable for the road surface. The front/rear torque bias can be adjusted in milliseconds – faster than any mechanical system.

Its benefits are experienced in different driving scenarios:

Starting off – drive force is securely delivered to all four wheels

Straight line driving – vehicle remains steady at all times

Entering a bend – change of direction is smooth

Steering through a bend – steering provides good feedback

Accelerating out of a bend – easy for the driver to trace a faithful line

Exiting a bend – confident, direct acceleration

The balance of front/rear drive torque is adjusted to achieve ideal performance. Details of the distribution in different driving situations are shown in the table below.

Driving situation

Normal torque distribution

Potential torque distribution

Aim

Starting off

60:40

20:80

Drive torque transferred to the rear to enhance traction and stability.

Straight-line driving

70:30

40:60

Torque distributed to optimise straight-line stability and improve efficiency.

Turning

75:25

20:80

More torque directed to the rear wheels to achieve better traction in low-grip conditions and confident line-tracing and good acceleration when exiting a bend.

BATTERY ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN

In developing a new battery electric powertrain, Lexus sought to strike a practical balance between performance and efficiency. To achieve its aims, it was able to apply multiple technology advantages from its experience of developing successful hybrid electric vehicles over the past two decades. Key to this strategy was adoption of an optimally sized battery that delivers the best balance between driving range, efficiency, cost, and size/packaging.

Battery electric powertrain

Lexus has designed a compact, high-voltage system circuit in which a transaxle and inverter are contained within the e-Axle units. An Energy Storage Unit (ESU) integrates the charging, power supply and power distribution functions. Noise filters have been added to the circuit to enhance electromagnetic compatibility; this helps avoid interference with the vehicle’s audio system.

The permanent magnet motors have a high power density and 17,000 rpm rotation speed. The inverter achieves high volumetric efficiency while allowing for a high current output. Its compact size – helped by a frame-style construction – allows it to be integrated in the transaxle. The motors are located on a symmetrical three-point aluminium mounting system giving balanced support that contributes to comfort, handling, stability and quiet performance.

Using grille shutters in front the radiator reduces air resistance and gives high cooling performance when required; these automatically close when not required. Ducts in the front grille direct air flow to the radiator, even when the shutters are closed. Cooling performance is provided a single, large-diameter fan.

Lithium-ion battery

The battery stack is positioned entirely beneath the cabin floor and forms a structural part of the vehicle’s frame. This contributes to the vehicle’s rigidity and its low centre of gravity, while the unit’s slim profile also means there is no intrusion in cabin or load compartment space. The battery is contained in a sealed, reinforced structure to protect it in the event of contact with the road surface or a collision.

The unit comprises 96 cells with a gross capacity of 71.4 kWh. Quality, durability and reliability are reflected in Lexus guaranteeing that the battery will retain at least 70% of its capacity after 10 years. Lexus is confident however, given its long experience in battery technologies, that actual capacity at the point should be at least 90%.

Most RZ variants – running on 20-inch wheels – achieve a range of around 395 km in the WLTP combined cycle test. Those which use 18-inch wheels see the range extended by about 40 km. These ranges apply to performance from full charge to complete depletion of the battery.

As it is the case for any Battery Electric Vehicle, real-world range might differ from the reference WLTP range. The real-world distance that the vehicle travels will vary based on individual factors such as driving style and speed, battery state of charge and temperature, use of climate control and type of tyres equipped on the vehicle.

Importantly, for drivers whose priority is to maximise the vehicle range, the RZ can be operated in Range mode (see Drive modes chapter below for details).

Furthermore, the evaluation of the remaining range as shown on the driver’s instrument display integrates several factors to ensure customers peace of mind. Besides the remaining charge of the battery, it also considers previous electricity consumption efficiency, actual driving conditions and current air conditioning usage. Also, the display will show the remaining range as 0 km from when the battery’s state of charge reaches approximately 8%[1].

Efficient cooling is key to battery performance and durability. A long-life, high-resistance LLC coolant is used for both the lithium-ion battery and the BEV system. This controls the temperature in a highly efficient system that helps maintain stable battery output even under high loads, such as high-speed cruising or repeated rapid charging. The battery cooling and the car’s air conditioning system work co-operatively, which enhances power performance, ensures cabin comfort and supports longer battery life. The unit is cooled from the bottom with a uniform flow path size for the refrigerant, giving even better cooling performance. The coolant is contained in separate chamber, so there is no direct contact with the battery in the event of a leak.

When operating in colder temperatures, a battery heater can be activated when charging the vehicle. This uses the heater in the air conditioning system and comes into play automatically when using a DC charger.

Battery charging

The RZ is equipped with a compact and lightweight 11 kW on-board charger. Battery recharging when connected to a three-phase power supply takes around six-and-a-half hours; using a one-phase supply the time is around 10 hours; connected to a DC fast-charging system, an 80% recharge can be accomplished in about 30 minutes[2].

Using the Lexus Link app, owners can set a charging time in advance to make use of off-peak energy and can programme a repeat charging schedule for convenience.

Acceleration

The RZ delivers a strong, continuous acceleration feel in the high throttle range and speed controllability in the low range. Using a battery electric system allows for a slip suppression function: a motor ECU in the e-Axles monitors wheel speed and detects any slip before the vehicle’s traction control operates, initiating drive torque control and reducing initial wheelspin.

When using Sport mode, Dynamic G Control provides a continuous acceleration feel, balancing the smooth and strong increase in speed with controllability.

Four-level deceleration

The driver can choose from four deceleration strengths to gain different degrees of slowing performance, selected using paddle shift controls. Deceleration is stronger when the car is in Sport mode, and on inclines, promoting safe, confident driving.

Acceleration Sound Control

The driver’s sense of connection with the car is enhanced by Acceleration Sound Control. This generates sound that reflects the vehicle’s state and behaviour, transmitted via the audio speakers. A constant tone is modulated to reflect the car’s drive mode and shift position and the driver’s use of the accelerator. The system can be switched off if the driver prefers.

Four selectable drive modes, including exclusive Range mode

The RZ’s performance and driving character can be adjusted with selectable drive modes. In Normal mode, a optimal balance of performance and power consumption is provided to suit a wide range of driving situations. In Eco mode, power is preserved by generating a lesser amount of drive torque in response to accelerator inputs and suppressing the air conditioning. In Sport mode there is stronger steering feel and accelerator response is sharpened. Drivers can set their preferred powertrain, chassis and air conditioning modes using a Custom mode, accessed via the multimedia touchscreen.

In order to meet the expectations of customers whose first priority is to maximise the real-world range of RZ, the car is also equipped with an exclusive Range mode which maximises the driving range by reducing power consumption, restricting power output and vehicle speed and turning the air conditioning off.

When Range mode is selected, the balance of DIRECT4 front/rear drive torque distribution is also optimised for power efficiency. When driving in the low torque range, only the rear motor is used; the front motor is brought into play as the torque level increases. If any wheelspin is detected, normal AWD operation resumes.

Braking system and Vehicle Braking Posture Control

The RZ uses an AHB-G braking system (Active Hydraulic Booster) which delivers pressure on demand via a high-performance pump motor. Front and rear brakeforce distribution is controlled by independent front and rear pressure regulators, giving comfortable drivability and stable posture under braking.

Vehicle Braking Posture Control varies the balance of front and rear braking according to the driver’s use of the brake pedal and vertical movement of the suspension. During initial braking, in low deceleration range, the vehicle is made to pitch so the driver can feel the deceleration effect. As the driver puts more pressure on the brakes, more brakeforce is distributed rearwards so body lift over the rear wheels is suppressed. This provides linear feel with clear initial braking effectiveness and giving the driver a strong sense of the car’s secure contact with the road surface.

Suspension

The suspension system has been designed to support exhilarating driving performance and to contribute towards delivery of the Lexus Driving Signature, helping generate a natural dialogue between driver and car.

The fundamental dynamic benefits of the BEV platform – high rigidity, a low centre of gravity and dynamically balanced chassis and low yaw inertia moment – are matched by suspension which contributes to faithful line-tracing, natural and stable vehicle posture and a comfortable ride. Attention has been paid to optimising the shock absorber characteristics to reduce unpleasant vibrations and large, undulating vehicle movements.

The front suspension uses a MacPherson strut-type design. At the rear, the set-up features double wishbones with trailing arms., with geometry precisely calculated to accommodate the highly responsive acceleration of a BEV. The shocks contain new frequency-sensitive pistons which vary the damping force according to frequencies transmitted by the road surface – softer in the high frequency range and harder in the lower.

One Motion Grip steer-by-wire

At the time of launch, the RZ is equipped with a conventional rack-assisted electric power steering system. This features an intermediate shaft that absorbs vibrations to maintain a smooth feel. The three-spoke steering wheel has variations in its cross section to provide a pleasing, snug grip.

Furthermore, the RZ is set to be the first model to use Lexus’ new One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system, currently under development and planned for market introduction in 2025 as a new option.

Instead of the conventional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front axle, via the steering column, this communicates the driver’s steering inputs to the wheels electronically. The result is instant response and more precise steering control.

The driver will also notice less steering wheel sway when travelling over rough roads; stable control and correction in strong crosswinds; and stable straight-line performance on angled surfaces.

Steering feel is important for driver confidence and control. Lexus engineers have ensured the system still provides feel and feedback, maintaining a strong connection between driver and car. There is also fail-safe provision of processors and an emergency power supply that automatically engages should the system lose its primary power supply.

One Motion Grip uses a new-look steering wheel, with a butterfly shape like the controls found in an aircraft cockpit. Its design was refined with input from Lexus’ Takumi drivers, who studied every element to ensure driver experienced the optimum grip, feel and feedback.

This design is suitable as the technology requires less steering effort from the driver, with no need for hand-over-hand turns. This makes for smooth lane-changing on the highway, a more comfortable drive on winding roads and easier manoeuvring in tight spaces, with the steering gear ratio automatically adjusting in line with the car’s speed. The steering characteristics also adjust according to the drive mode selected, with a sharper, more weighted feel in Sport mode.

Feedback from the system blocks out unwanted tyre and brake vibrations but communicates an accurate feel of the road surface.

The new-shape steering wheel has no top section, so the driver gains a more open view of the instrument binnacle and road ahead. Lexus’ designers took advantage of this to set the meters higher and further away than would be possible with a conventional steering wheel, minimising the driver’s need to adjust their sightline. This takes the concept of the Tazuna cockpit to a higher level, concentrating the driver’s attention on the road. The yoke design also gives the driver more leg room and makes it easier to get in and out of the car.

LIFE ON BOARD: HUMAN-CENTRED DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES

Driver’s cockpit layout follows Lexus’ Tazuna concept, giving the driver fast, easy and intuitive control of the vehicle

Customisable driver’s instrument display

New radiant heaters for front seat passengers

New heat-shielding panoramic roof, dimmable at the touch of a switch

The RZ’s cabin has an open, spacious and airy feel with a driver-focused cockpit developed according to the principles of Lexus’ Tazuna concept – design approach successfully applied previously to the all-new NX and RX models. Lexus has introduced a number of human-centred advanced technology features that enhance comfort, convenience and life on board, reinforcing the spirit of Omotenashi hospitality.

Tazuna driver’s cockpit

The RZ’s cockpit is an evolution of Lexus’ Tazuna concept, inspired by the way a rider can intuitively control a horse using just small adjustments of the reins. It brings together the driver’s position at the wheel and a precise arrangement of meters, controls and displays to create a space where the driver needs only to make small movements of the hand and eye to operate the vehicles. With the future introduction of One Motion Grip by-wire steering (detailed above), the full benefits of the Tazuna cockpit concept will be even more fully realised.

The layout of the controls and information sources – 14-inch centre multimedia display, meters, multi-information display and head-up display – require minimum hand and eye movement to reach, operate and read, helping keep the driver’s attention on the road ahead. The layout and shape of the cockpit also guide the driver’s line of vision forwards. With the One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system, the effect is heightened with the new-look steering wheel, opening up the space in front of the driver.

The design and the driver’s position at the wheel with a commanding view ahead reinforce the qualities of the Lexus Driving Signature – comfort, confidence and control at all times.

Bright and open cabin environment

The open feel of the interior is enhanced by the instrument panel having a thinner construction and being set low, relative to the front passenger’s seating position. Space has also been gained by moving the passenger airbag rearwards and adopting a new air conditioning system with an integrated blower unit, located in the centre of the instrument panel.

The centre console has a slim and elegant upper section, incorporating a storage box with a lid that is hinged to open to the left or right, so is equally easy for the driver or front passenger to use. The unit also features cupholders, USB ports, a 12V power outlet and (where specified) a wireless charging tray. The design provides further storage space beneath the console, big enough to hold a tissue box, a pair of shoes or owner’s manual.

Interior colours and trims

Three interior colour combinations are available, each creating a different ambience. Orage upholstery (a shade of blue) is matched with black trim and a Solis White covering for the interior door shoulders and armrests for a bright, clean and advanced look. Hazel seat coverings are combined with black trim in a luxurious and modern effect and the pairing of Greyscale upholstery and black trim provides cool monotone finish.

A new Tsuyasumi ornamentation is available for the console, with a charcoal finish with subtle shiny veining like a natural cinder block. The effect is created through the overlaying of numerous delicate layers, a process using advanced film technology, overseen by Lexus’ Takumi craftspeople.

Ambient lighting

The cabin atmosphere is enhanced by an ambient lighting system with a spectrum of 64 colours, grouped in 14 different themes to create the right mood for the journey. The colour and brightness of each lamp can be adjusted using the settings screen in the centre display.

The RZ features a new In-ei illumination effect, which casts a pattern of light and shadow across the door panels, creating different effects as the surrounding light conditions change with the time of day.

Seating

The seats feature Lexus’ global architecture frame design and are upholstered with “deep-hung” seams to promote more comfortable support and posture on long journeys. The integrated heaters have been redesigned to operate across the entire seat, with temperature adjusted for the shoulders, back and upper thigh areas.

The rear seatbacks have a two-stage recline function. The outer rear seats are available with heaters with high and low temperature settings.

Sustainable Ultrasuede

Ultrasuede upholstery is available for the new RZ, a sustainable suede-like material for the seats and upper door trims that is partly made from bio- and recycled materials. The other options are Tahara synthetic leather with a cloud-effect finish and a fabric with a woven texture. The fabric is made using a spin-dyed yarn, reducing wastewater from the dyeing process.

Omotenashi welcome display

The driver’s instrument display presents a full-screen Omotenashi welcome, personalised to the driver. As the driver unlocks and enters the vehicle, they are welcomed by name (as registered with their smart key) and an animation sequence begins, showing the vehicle in silhouette. When the power button is pressed, animation graphics and sounds are co-ordinated across the meters, head-up display and centre display, guiding the driver’s focus forwards.

A welcome lighting sequence illuminates the front door handles and cabin lighting as the driver approaches the car. When exiting, the lights remain for up to seven seconds if the driver remains close to the vehicle.

Customisable meters and multi-information display

The meters in the instrument binnacle can be customised to suit the driver’s preference and their appearance automatically changes according to the drive mode selected. They are designed for clear and instant recognition, and on high grade models are presented in high definition.

There is a choice of three centre faces for the meter, which can be chosen via the centre display’s customisation screen: power meter and surplus energy gauge; analogue speedometer; and digital speedometer. The Surplus energy indicator gives the driver peace of mind, showing in real time the energy available, in relation to electric motor output and the level of regenerated energy.

The multi-information display content can be selected and adjusted using the touch-tracer switches on the steering wheel on high grade models; on other grades the standard steering wheel tabs and switches can be used.

Head-up display

The head-up display is projected onto the base of the windscreen in the driver’s straight-ahead view. Its position, layout and content can all be adjusted to suit personal preference. Three content versions are available: full, standard and minimum.

Switches and controls

While the Tazuna cockpit concept ensures the principal driving-related controls are positioned close at hand for the driver, those which are less important and less frequently used are now accessed using the central touchscreen. Physical buttons have been retained in the centre display for intuitive operation, including the audio on/off and air conditioning controls.

Another example of the easy, intuitive control provided in the Tazuna concept is touch-sensor switches on the steering wheel. First introduced in the all-new Lexus NX, these can be customised to operate the driver’s preferred functions, such as drive mode, navigation and audio. When the driver touches the switch, its shape and function are shown on the head-up display, so the driver doesn’t have to look down at the wheel to check for the right control. Although they work using electronic signals, they have a satisfying “click” feel to confirm operation.

Rotary shift selector

The RZ’s shift-by-wire system is operated using a new rotary shift selector on the centre console. The driver presses the control down and turns the tactile machined outer ring clockwise for drive and anti-clockwise for reverse; pressing the control down puts the vehicle in neutral. There are further switches on the console for “Park” and the electronic parking brake.

Heat-shielding, dimmable panoramic roof

The optional panoramic roof increases the feeling of space and light in the cabin, extending far back so that there is an open view for rear passengers, even when the rear seats are reclined (the roof is wider and 44 mm longer than that featured on the Lexus NX). The glass has a low-e (low-emissive) coating that reflects infra-red radiation and reduces radiant heat on sunny days, while helping keep heat inside the cabin when the weather is cold.

The roof has an electric dimming function, which renders it opaque at the touch of a switch. As a result, there is less need to use the air conditioning system to maintain a comfortable temperature and there is no need for a retracting sunshade, which saves weight – factors that reduce the RZ’s energy use and help maintain its driving range. Dispensing with a sunshade also helps provide more head room – as does shaping of the headlining to raise the ceiling height.

New air conditioning system

The RZ uses a new, compact air conditioning unit with an integrated heater and blower. It makes use of an efficient heat pump system which uses heated coolant to warm the cabin in cold weather driving. This reduces the load placed on the vehicle’s power supply, helping maximise the driving range. Its compact dimensions and central position beneath the instrument panel free up more leg room for the front seat passenger.

The Lexus Climate Concierge co-ordinates the air conditioning, seat heaters, heated steering wheel and (where fitted) radiant heaters to warm or cool the cabin to the desired temperature quickly and efficiently. Lexus’ S-FLOW control detects which seats are occupied and adjusts air conditioning performance accordingly, saving power.

Cabin air quality is maintained using nanoe X™ technology, which emits microscopic water particles containing hydroxy radicals in the air flow. These are effective in inhibiting viruses, bacteria, pollen and other allergens and can act against the spread of mould. They can also counter bad odours and stop moisture evaporation, helping keep occupants’ hair and skin moisturised.

The air conditioning can be activated remotely using the Lexus Link smartphone app, so the cabin can be warmed or the screen defrosted ahead of making a journey. The app allows temperatures settings to be registered and for the demister, seat and steering wheel heaters to be switched on.

Radiant heaters

New radiant heaters are positioned at knee-level in front of the driver and front passenger, beneath the steering column and lower instrument panel. Unlike convection heating, they use infrared radiation to heat solid objects directly in front of them. They also use around 8% less energy.

Integrated into the Lexus Climate Concierge, they work in conjunction with the seat heaters and heated steering wheel to speed up warming of the cabin, feeling like a warm blanket around the legs. They operate silently and with no air draught. They have an automatic safeguard should anyone come into contact with them, automatically reducing the panel temperature to 43˚C. As with the panoramic roof, they reduce the load on the air conditioning system and help preserve the car’s driving range.

Digital rear-view mirror

A digital rear-view mirror is available[3], using a rear camera to give the driver a clear rearward view, unobstructed by any passengers or luggage inside the car. Touch controls on the mirror can be used to position the mirror, to scale the image and change the brightness level. The unit can also be switched to work as a conventional optical mirror when desired.

Load compartment

The space available in the load compartment is not compromised by the vehicle battery and extra nine litres has been gained by mounting the audio system’s subwoofer within the back door. With all seats in place, the area offers 522 litres; fold the rear seats down and the maximum volume is 1,451 litres, loaded to the ceiling. With the tonneau cover in place, there is room for two suitcases (110-litre and 97-litre). Beneath the deck board there is a further 58 litres of space in a practically shaped, fully lined area, handy for storing the BEV charging cable.

Easy access is aided by a 740 mm loading height and the availability of a power back door.
Changes to the motor make the back door opening and closing sequence quicker and quieter, and the opening angle can be pre-set to suit the location, for example to avoid hitting a low garage roof. According to model specification, a kick-sensor is provided for hands-free operation.

MULTIMEDIA, INFORMATION AND CONNECTIVITY

Faster, more intuitive Lexus Link multimedia with 14-inch touchscreen

Improved voice command control, including “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant

Bespoke 13-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system

Multimedia system

The RZ is equipped with the all-new Lexus Link multimedia platform, with faster, more intuitive operation and increased functions for connectivity, efficient journey planning and information.

The system includes “always on” cloud-based navigation, benefiting from up-to-the moment information on traffic events, accidents and road conditions. The voice recognition function understands and responds to conversational requests and is better able to detect commands when there is background noise. There is also a new “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant and smartphone integration is enabled via Apple CarPlay (wireless connection) and Android Auto.

The vehicle’s DCM (data communication module) allows functions to be conveniently updated or added over the air, without any interruption to the vehicle’s use.

14-inch touchscreen

Information, entertainment, navigation, air conditioning and access to vehicle settings is via a 14-inch touchscreen. Mounted on the centre of the instrument panel, this also includes physical buttons for frequent functions including audio on/off and climate control temperature.

The screen presents an icon-based menu with sharp, colourful graphics in high definition. As well as touch operation, voice commands can be used: the Dynamic Voice Recognition is able to discern different voices and operate when there is background noise – for example, the audio doesn’t have to be turned off.

On-board “Hey Lexus” assistant

The “Hey Lexus” assistant can be used for multimedia commands and to adjust some vehicle functions, such as the air conditioning and opening or closing the windows. It can detect whether the commands come from the driver or front passenger.

My Setting

The My Setting function allows customisation of the audio, navigation, driving position, cabin illumination, meter display and Lexus Safety System + for up to three drivers/users. This can be accessed using the multimedia screen, or via a Bluetooth device. The vehicle will also recognise an individual driver when they use their registered smart key and automatically apply their chosen settings when they enter the car.

Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system

Lexus’ exclusive audio partner Mark Levinson has developed a 13-speaker system delivering high-quality sound reproduction comparable to a high-end audio package across all genres of music, creating a live ambience with purity, depth and faithful reproduction of the original sounds. Key to this is a Harman discrete amplifier that allows playback of high-resolution sound sources (96 kHz/24-bit) that contain more information than a compact disc (44.1 kHz.16-bit).

The speakers are optimally positioned around the cabin: 9 cm Unity speakers left, right and centre on the instrument panel; eight by nine-inch woofers on the lower front doors; and 9 cm Unity speakers on the rear doors. Completing the array is a 22.4 cm sub-woofer. This is installed in the back door, avoiding any loss of load space. Its construction includes a large neodymium magnetic circuit to achieve heavy bass sound reproduction.

10-speaker audio system

The standard audio package for the RZ is a premium 10-speaker system, tuned to deliver clear mid and high-range tones and rich, crisp low tones. As with the Mark Levinson Premium Surround System, the amplifier has the capacity for playback of high-resolution sound sources, greater than the information contained in CD files. A 20 cm sub-woofer is housed in the back door.

Connectivity

Three USB ports are provided on the centre console – one for multimedia connection and two suitable for device charging. Two further charging ports are provided on the rear console, together with an AC power outlet on Luxury grade.

WORLD-CLASS SAFETY PERFORMANCE

Latest generation Lexus Safety System + with new and improved functions

New Driver Monitor and Proactive Driving Assist

Future software upgrades delivered seamlessly over-the-air

Lexus’ aim was to equip the RZ with a world-class package of preventive safety features that are able to recognise and react to an even wider range of accident risk scenarios. The car benefits from the latest generation Lexus Safety System +, with new and improved functions that operate seamlessly in the context of a battery electric vehicle.

Advanced technologies are applied to detect more hazards, provide driver warnings and initiate steering, braking and acceleration assistance when required to help avoid a collision or mitigate the consequences if an impact does happen. They also reduce the burden on the driver, making the job of driving less tiring.

Making use of the car’s data communications module (DCM), the safety systems can be updated over-the-air, with no need for the vehicle to be taken to a service centre.

These features combine with comprehensive passive safety provisions and the RZ’s robust construction to provide comprehensive protection for everyone on board.

Pre-Collision System

The radar and camera used by the RZ’s Pre-Collision System (PCS) have a wider detection range and can recognise a wider range of hazards than previously. This includes the risk of a head-on collision with traffic coming from the left or right when making a turn at an intersection. The system’s response time is faster and it is also now able to identify motorcycles, as well as cyclists and pedestrians.

Emergency Steering Assist helps keep the car stable and within its traffic lane when the driver has to avoid a parked car, pedestrian or other obstacle to the side of the road. The system is also available with Active Support, which works to avoid a collision by providing gentle braking and steering.

The PCS further provides Low Speed Acceleration Suppression, recognising sudden, unintended use of the throttle when driving at low speed.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

The RZ’s Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) provides a wider range of inter-vehicle distance settings, so the driver has more freedom to tailor performance to their personal preference. Activating the system has been made easier with simple switch operation and the option of voice command control to set the cruising speed and distance from the preceding vehicle.

New functions include Curve Speed Reduction, ensuring an appropriate speed for smooth driving through bends, and Overtaking Prevention, which regulates the car’s speed to avoid overtaking a slower vehicle on the wrong side on a multi-lane road. The driver can also easily reset the cruising speed to comply with changes in the speed limit detected by the Road Sign Assist system (RSA).

Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist

The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) has been improved so that it can now recognise more objects, including adjacent street furniture such as utility poles, kerbstones and guard rails. It can also recognise when the driver is steering to avoid a person or parked vehicle in the RZ’s traffic lane.

The high-performance camera used by the Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is better able to distinguish road markings; when these are obscured, for example in heavy traffic, the system will follow the path of the vehicle ahead. Expansion of the system’s DNN (deep neural network) has enabled it to recognise 3D objects. This means it can adjust its performance to give appropriate lateral clearance from vehicles in adjacent lanes or roadworks, operating in way that feels natural to the driver.

Lane Change Assist

Lane Change Assist can be used when the car’s LTA is activated. When the driver signals to make a lane change, the system checks for safety using the PCS radar and camera, calculates the target trajectory and provides appropriate steering control. Once the lane change is complete, LTA returns to its normal operating status.

Driver Monitor

The Driver Monitor is a new feature that uses a camera mounted above the steering wheel to keep constant check on the driver’s condition. If it recognises that they have lost concentration through being tired or unwell, it triggers visual and audible alerts. In a world-first, the system is linked to the car’s active safety systems, so that should the driver fail to respond, the car can be brought smoothly to a controlled halt with the hazard lights activated (Emergency Driving Stop).

Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) includes Obstacle Anticipation Assist, Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist. The system operates at lower speeds, for example when driving around town. The PCS front camera scans the area in front of the car to check for hazards such as pedestrians about to cross or walking along the side of the road, parked cars and cyclists. If there is a collision risk, the system will provide braking and steering to avoid the obstacle, while keeping the car in its traffic lane.

Additional features

The Lexus Safety System + package for the RZ also provides Automatic High Beam or an Adaptive High-beam System for automatic adjustment of the headlight beams to achieve optimum forward illumination without dazzling oncoming traffic. The RZ is the first Lexus to be fitted with AHS using a single bi-projector LED headlight.

Road Sign Assist (RSA) is able to recognise and display a wider range of highway warning and command signs. The car’s speed limiter can be linked to the RSA, reducing powertrain output and applying braking if necessary to keep the car within the legal speed limit for a given road.

Passive safety

The RZ has a full complement of SRS airbags, including a centre airbag between the front seats, helping protect driver and passenger from colliding with each other in the event of an impact. A dual-stage driver’s airbag is integrated in the new-design One Motion Grip steering yoke as well as the conventional steering wheel.

The impact-absorbing quality of the car’s frame has been enhanced with a new door impact beam and quarter lock pillar design. The beam helps ensure impact loads are shared by each of the car’s pillars and rockers; the quarter lock pillar prevents crushing of the wheel house.

EASIER, SAFER DRIVING WITH ADVANCED ASSISTANCE FEATURES

Multiple systems for easy and precise vehicle manoeuvring

Smooth, automated parking with Advanced Park system

e-Latch with Safe Exit Assist, helping prevent accidents caused by inadvertent door opening.

In addition to the provisions of Lexus Safety System +, the new RZ offers a wide range of features to support easy and safe use of the car – from automatic parking to blind spot monitoring and control for safe opening of the doors.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Rear Camera Detection

The driver’s sightlines can be compromised when negotiating narrow and confined spaces, such as car parks. The RZ uses clearance sonars and cameras that can detect both static objects and both vehicles and pedestrians crossing behind the car when moving at low speed. If a hazard is spotted, a buzzer sounds and an alert appears in the multi-information display, showing the vehicle position in relation to the hazard.

In addition, the Advanced Park system (see below) warns of accidental contact with static objects to either side of the car, using side-mounted sensors and cameras to look out for hazards such as bollards when exiting a parking space. The Parking Support Brake will control drive and brake force control if there is a risk of contact with pedestrians, objects or approaching vehicles.

Advanced Park

The Advanced Park takes all the strain out of parking, providing automatic control of the steering, shift selection and braking to move the car smoothly and efficiently into series and parallel parking places. The system can recognise up to three regularly used parking spots.

Lexus e-latch with Safe Exit Assist

The RZ follows the all-new RX and NX in adopting the smooth and easy e-latch electronic door release system. This is linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor to provide Safe Exit Assist which prevents doors from being opened in the path of cycles or vehicles approaching from the rear. Lexus estimates this safeguard can help prevent more than 95% of the accidents caused by hazardous door opening. The system can be customised with a choice of three levels of sensitivity.

Panoramic View Monitor

The Panoramic View Monitor uses the RZ’s array of four cameras and 12 sensors to give the driver a 360-degree view of the car’s immediate surroundings and the option of a composite, overhead view. Cameras in the door mirrors provide a side clearance view to help negotiate narrow lanes and spaces, and there is also an under-floor “see-through” view option, to check the driving surface beneath the car and the position of the wheels. A cornering view provides a diagonal image to help with turns in narrow roads and avoid contact with kerbs. A moving view shows the car as seen from diagonally above. A camera washer system keeps the monitor clear, activated when the rear screen washer is used.

Additional features

To help protect against rear-end collisions, the hazard lights can be activated automatically to warn a following vehicle. Designed primarily to alert buses or trucks, the system operates at approaching speeds of 30 to 100 km/h.

In the event or a rear-end collision, a secondary brake will operate automatically, to help prevent the RZ being propelled forwards into another vehicle.

The RZ also provides Drive Start Control, which recognises excessive pressure on the throttle when the shift selector is being used and suppresses acceleration.

[1] The buffer below 0 km on the display is included in the WLTP calculation.

[2] The charging times may vary due to factors such as the charge level and temperature of the battery, the outside air temperature, power supply voltage, and the AC or DC charger specifications.

[3] Digital mirror is not available when the dimmable panoramic roof is specified.

lexus,rz,RZ450e,2022 RZ

<pp:caseid>555213</pp:caseid>

Automatically variable torque distribution between front and rear e-Axles

Cheetah-inspired vehicle body control and posture

Delivering Confidence, Control, and Comfort with Lexus Driving Signature

Driving enjoyment and passenger comfort are both enhanced in the Lexus RZ by the car’s DIRECT4 intelligent all-wheel drive control system. This exclusive Lexus technology, which is introduced on the RZ, automatically adjusts driving force distribution between the front and rear e-Axles within milliseconds in response to driving conditions. DIRECT4 also automatically adjusts the braking force on all four wheels in accordance with ground contact load and improves this Battery Electric Vehicle’s energy efficiency.

When Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe observed the world’s fastest animal, the cheetah, in action, he was fascinated by how the big cat’s body moves in all kinds of ways when it sprints and swerves in pursuit of prey, yet its head remains surprisingly stable, and its eye-line is unwavering. This inspired Lexus’ engineers to think of new ways to control the RZ’s body posture, and with DIRECT4 they were able to bestow the vehicle with exceptionally good pitch control. The extent to which the vehicle tilts backwards under acceleration and forwards under braking is now more limited, reducing the corresponding movements of occupants’ heads. This gives the driver a more stable sightline and significantly enhances passenger comfort, especially in the rear seats.

This inspiration from the cheetah also influenced the RZ’s exterior styling.

In addition to the greater control of vehicle body posture, and a reduction in sudden cabin movements for a smoother ride, the other benefits of DIRECT4 are powerful and smooth on-demand acceleration; excellent traction under acceleration and on slippery surfaces; better stability through corners; and reassuringly secure braking.

Automatically variable torque distribution also enhances the precise, linear, natural-feeling responses to driver inputs. All these attributes strengthen the RZ’s core driving characteristics, represented by the “three C’s” that are the cornerstones of the Lexus Driving Signature: Confidence, Control, and Comfort.

DIRECT4 continually provides optimal drive force balance between front and rear by controlling each e-Axle independently. Sensors send information to the BEV ECU about wheel speed, longitudinal G, and steering angle. DIRECT4 responds to this information, to maximise traction and grip, almost instantly: front/rear torque bias can be adjusted from zero to 100% or 100% to zero and anything in between in milliseconds, faster than any mechanical system.

Torque is divided between the front and rear e-Axles according to driving conditions:

USUAL

(FR : RR)

UP TO

(FR : RR)

AIM

STARTING OFF

60 : 40

20 : 80

Torque transfer to rear to enhance traction and stability

STRAIGHT DRIVING

70 : 30

40 : 60

Torque transfer to optimise straight line stability and improve efficiency

TURNING

75 : 25

20 : 80

More torque to the rear to enhance traction in low friction situations.

During cornering, more torque to the rear to give confident line tracing and good acceleration feel when exiting the corner.

RANGE MODE

0 : 100

50 : 50

In low-torque driving, only the rear motor is used to maximise driving range.

lexus,rz,2022 RZ,RZ450e,driver power

At its Kenshiki media forum in Brussels the company provided a progress update on Lexus Electrified, its roadmap for electrification and the journey to carbon neutrality. It also highlighted some of the innovative design and engineering that will feature in its new generation models.

Pascal Ruch, TME Vice President in charge of Lexus Europe, acknowledged that ultimately battery electric vehicles will take the lead, but that while challenges of infrastructure and electricity supply remain, Lexus will continue to develop a range of electrified technologies for hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles to meet diverse customer needs and driving environments around the world.

He said: “All future development will be based on the principle of leveraging electrification to reinvent the driving experience. We want our vehicles to be truly enjoyable to drive.”

The Lexus technology advantage

Lexus was the pioneer of electrification in the luxury car market, introducing the hybrid electric RX 400h SUV in 2005. Since then, it has pushed the technology boundaries to achieve ever-better performance and efficiency, gaining unmatched experience in developing the principal electric vehicle components – including motors, batteries and power control units. At the same time, it has popularised hybrids with a growing range of models, that has amassed more than 2.3 million global sales. Today, more than 90% of the new Lexus vehicles sold in Europe are hybrids. The company is leveraging this experience to ensure its new generation of electrified models deliver the highest levels of quality, performance and safety.

To help realise its ambitions, Lexus is developing a new global headquarters at Shimoyama in Japan, a car-centric, agile complex that will be home to all its development disciplines, with designers and engineers working side by side in the drawing rooms and on the test tracks.

Lexus Electrified Sport

The Electrified Sport represents Lexus’ vision for a future halo sports car with a battery electric drivetrain. It captures the company’s intention to build electrified cars with an authentic performance dimension. Its sweeping lines – establishing a new Lexus BEV identity, inspired by the speed and smoothness of aerobatics – are matched by its power. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h acceleration is expected in around two seconds.

Superior battery design

The batteries deployed in the latest Lexus hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles provide practical, all-electric EV driving capability, but are kept compact to avoid penalties of weight, cost and intrusion into the cabin and load space. The same principle is applied to battery electric models, with the smart-sized 71.4 kWh battery in the upcoming RZ 450e SUV set to provide an optimal combination of range and efficiency.

The all-new RX hybrid introduces a new bi-polar nickel-metal hydride battery, a technology that reduces resistance, giving higher load and unload capacity. This increases output from each cell by 70%, so more power can be obtained without increasing the battery’s dimensions. Lexus is also researching the next generation of lithium-ion batteries and the potential of solid-state battery technology. The bi-polar nickel-metal hydride battery is available on the RX 350h and on the RX 500h, Lexus’ first turbocharged performance hybrid.

The quality and safety of Lexus’ new battery units are founded not only on the design and structure of the battery, but also on a monitoring system that detects any abnormal heating, all the way down to individual cell level. The use of non-conductive coolant prevents the risk of fire should a problem occur, while the battery design prevents degraded substances forming on the anode and compromising battery life. Thanks to these measures, Lexus is confidently targeting the new RZ to maintain 90% of its battery capacity after 10 years of use, adding to customer peace of mind.

Dynamic rewards with DIRECT4 and One Motion Grip

Lexus is introducing new systems that optimise the dynamic potential of electrified powertrains. DIRECT4, featured in the new RX 500h and RZ 450e models, is a Lexus-exclusive technology that instantly balances the drive torque delivered to the front and rear axles, giving optimum traction in all driving conditions, linear acceleration and enhanced cornering and vehicle posture. As well as performance and handling it will also contribute to greater ride comfort, particularly for rear seat passengers.

One Motion Grip is a steer-by-wire system that dispenses with mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Set for introduction on the new RZ 450e, it will transform the driving experience, eliminating the need for hand-over-hand turns of the wheel so manoeuvres are made easier and more precise. Low-speed agility and highway stability are also improved. The system makes automatic micro-corrections when driving over uneven surfaces.

An EV powertrain with manual transmission

For many drivers, the control and engagement provided by a manual transmission is an important part of an enjoyable driving experience. Lexus has investigated how a battery electric vehicle might be equipped with a manual transmission – a project that has progressed to focused development using a research prototype based on the UX 300e compact SUV, equipped with a gear lever and a clutch pedal.

Takashi Watanabe, Lexus Electrified Chief Engineer, explained: “From the outside, this vehicle is as quiet as any other BEV. But the driver is able to experience all the sensations of a manual transmission vehicle. It is a software-based system, so it can be programmed to reproduce the driving experience of different vehicle types, letting the driver choose their preferred mapping.”

With the DIRECT4 and One Motion Grip systems also being software-based, Lexus will be able to explore new opportunities for performance customisation to provide a personalised experience for each driver.

lexus,electrified,electrified sport,kenshiki,rz,RZ450e,2022 RZ

WHY THE LEXUS RZ’s EXTERIOR DESIGN TAKES INSPIRATION FROM THE CHEETAH AND DARES TO BE DIFFERENT

The “Next Chapter” spindle body hints at Lexus’ future design direction, with the “Seamless E-motion” concept characterizes liveliness with smoothness.

Cheetah’s sprinting power inspired RZ’s poise

Design expresses electrification’s performance, driving pleasure, and refinement

“Next Chapter” spindle body hints at Lexus’ future design direction

“Seamless E-motion” concept characterizes liveliness with smoothness

Perhaps the most striking characteristic of the new Lexus RZ is its appearance. Lexus’ first pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) stands out from the crowd because of its distinctive exterior design. This expresses an inherent dynamism inspired by the cheetah and “seamless E-motion” characteristic of the smooth acceleration provided by electrification. More than being boldly contemporary, the RZ also signposts where Lexus is going next.

Progressive design does entail an element of risk. Not all SUV buyers want a distinctively different vehicle, and some take time acclimatising to new design directions. But where boundary-pushing designers dare to go, public taste often follows. And by embracing Lexus’ “Next Chapter” design, the RZ demonstrates the kind of automotive future the brand is aiming for. A future in which electrification technology enhances vehicle performance, offers driving pleasure, and advances the refinement and comfort of “Lexus-ness”.

Because this vision informed the core philosophy of the RZ, its exterior design suggests the ample cabin volumes of an SUV yet also the lively acceleration of an EV. SUV spaciousness is implied by the long wheelbase, with wheels pushed to the corners, and by the plentiful headroom evident in the cabin silhouette’s rearward peak. Electric-only propulsion is affirmed by the relatively low hoodline and a nose that is conspicuously without a grille, because there is no internal combustion engine to accommodate or cool.

Even though Lexus’ spindle grille has gone, the RZ is instantly recognizable as a Lexus because this signature feature has been amplified into a spindle body shape. This creates a solid mass expressing a single surface which reaches from the nose towards the body. The spindle mass is accentuated by using body colour where there would traditionally be a black grille mesh area, by blacking out the body either side of this, and by giving more emphasis to the fender shape.

The fact that electrification delivers responsive, energetic driving performance is important. The basic inspiration for RZ development from Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe was the cheetah, and this thinking is carried through to the exterior design. The RZ’s body evokes the dynamism of the fast cat when it is sprinting: nose tucked down, tail high, rear legs digging in for grip and propulsion. This is seen in the RZ’s nose-to-tail stance, sinewy flanks, and the way the rear tyres appear to be kicking down at the ground. The body volume appears to push the rear tyres rearward and the rear wheel arches, like those at the front, are distinctively muscular.

Chief Designer Daichi Kimura commented: “Because the cheetah is maybe a little too direct as a motif for the car, we discussed this concept a lot and decided to express the DIRECT4 driving performance image inspired by the cheetah.”

This performance – and what’s more, the way this performance is delivered with Lexus-like smoothness – also inspired the RZ’s “seamless E-Motion” design concept. Airflow management and aerodynamic efficiency are clearly apparent in the RZ’s body mass, which has a dynamic form that visualizes airflow. The ability to cut cleanly through the air is affirmed by the front grille shutters, cabin centerline and tapered surfaces, the sleek door axis expression which runs horizontally along the vehicle’s sides, and the rear roof spoiler.

That roof spoiler is comprised of two separate elements, located at the outer edges of the body width immediately behind the C-pillars. Some observers have likened this to horns. As with so many other exterior design details, this is a perfect example of function complemented by form – and that form is elegantly individual. It is for both practical and aesthetic reasons that the RZ dares to be different.

lexus,rz,RZ450e,2022 RZ,design

For Lexus, it is an opportunity to celebrate an exclusive and long-running partnership with luxury audio specialists Mark Levinson that has brought great music to millions of Lexus drivers and passengers.

Together, Lexus and Mark Levinson (one many prestige brands owned by parent company HARMAN International) have been raising the bar for the quality of in-car entertainment for more than 20 years. Today, bespoke sound systems are developed for each new model, benefiting from ever-more sophisticated technologies to deliver the best listening experience for everyone on board. That’s true whatever your listening preference: the grandeur of a symphony hall, the intimacy of jazz club or the thrill of a stadium gig – the sound reproduction gives you the sense that you are part of the event.

The latest fruits of this partnership will be revealed later this year with the launch two all-new SUVs – the new generation RX SUV and the ground-breaking, all-electric RZ.

“It’s really a partnership that begins with understanding the vision for the car and its occupants,” explains Savion Thompson, Acoustics Engineer at Mark Levinson. “Our team makes a point to learn early what a model means to Lexus, then we develop the system to enhance this vision.

“We do a lot of listening – to the chief engineers, the factory workers and the dealerships, and then to the buyers. Part of my job is to know what is out there, but even more important is to choose the right fit for the car. That’s a process that takes an entire team and constant feedback at every checkpoint, following a strong philosophy of constant improvement, or kaizen,” continued Thompson.

The synergies between the two companies include the fact they both aim to deliver the highest standards. “We strive to be the highest performing audio brand in the world,” says Kyle Roche, Senior Global Marketing Manager at HARMAN. “Aiming to achieve near zero per cent harmonic distortion and crystal-clear acoustic performance, our goals align with Lexus very closely. That is one of the reasons why the partnership has lasted for more than 20 years.”

One of the most recent examples of Mark Levinson’s work in a Lexus production model is the audio system tailor-made for the new NX 350h hybrid electric SUV. The focus of the development programme was to use new PurePlay architecture to create a 7.1 surround sound effect, bringing the sound closer to the listener’s ear level and taking the listening experience beyond what might be expected from an in-car audio system. This reflects how the quality of the audio contributes to Lexus’s famous omotenashi hospitality principles, going beyond people’s expectations to make them feel completely at home in their car.

Work began on designing the audio system around five years before the model’s market launch and involved close scrutiny of the size and shape of the vehicle interior.

“Space is always at a premium, particularly in a vehicle the size of the NX,” says Savion Thompson. “However, both Lexus and Mark Levinson set a goal to keep the sound system as close to ideal as possible. This called for months of vehicle study, lots of hand-made prototypes, simulations, measurements and presentations. The team persisted, even stripping the vehicle down to the sheet metal and reworking the factory process to make way for innovation.”

There is also the quest to find the right balance between performance and efficiency: “As vehicle manufacturers strive to increase output while using fewer resources, the multimedia system has to respond to the same challenges. Every millimetre of space and gramme of material needs to be negotiated with a clear value-added purpose,” Thompson adds.

The Pureplay speaker layout in the NX features seven matched 90mm speakers, positioned strategically around the cabin to create an enhanced sound stage. To this are added an internally coupled subwoofer, and 8x9 door woofer and a brand-new, fully discrete 12-channel amplifier.

“The amplifier is the core of our sound,” says Thomson, “we have been working on it for five years in what has been a true collaboration between our automotive and luxury teams.”

On Lexus’s part, there is great appreciation for Mark Levinson’s contribution to the quality and appeal of its vehicles: “During the past two decades our two companies have evolved side-by-side with our shared values of precision craftsmanship, innovation and an amazing experience for our customers,” says Spiros Fotinos, Head of Lexus Europe. “With each new model, we have been able to deliver a more immersive and rewarding listening experience, thanks to Mark Levinson’s leadership in audio technology and close understanding of our values as a global luxury brand.”

For more information, please visit https://www.lexus.eu/car-models/

lexus,NX,RX,rz,partnership

You will be redirected to your local Lexus website for markets where online reservation is available.

The RZ 450e is an all-new battery electric SUV, the first Lexus electric vehicle to be developed from the ground up. It is not a vehicle that simply adopts battery electric power in place of a conventional engine; it goes much further to realise the exciting potential of new technologies that enhance performance and driving pleasure, true to the Lexus Electrified philosophy.

Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe explains: “Our vision is to use electrification technology as a means to enhance basic vehicle performance, so that we can continue to pursue driving pleasure for all future generations.”

This is witnessed, for example, in an advanced drivetrain featuring optional by-wire steering with a new One Motion Grip yoke and front and rear e-Axles that work in conjunction with Lexus’ new DIRECT4 all-wheel drive torque control. The fundamentals of handling and responsiveness are secured with a dedicated new electric vehicle platform, which brings excellent body rigidity, a low centre of gravity and a long wheelbase.

The RZ is the next step in Lexus’ move towards becoming a 100% BEV brand in Western and Central Europe by 2030. The new model will be available for European customers to reserve as from April 20, ahead of the first vehicle deliveries from the end of 2022.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

Lexus has taken the design freedoms offered by BEVs to create a vehicle that looks significantly different from conventional cars, but which represents the Lexus “Next Chapter” design. This styling approach pursues a unique look and proportions, born from the vehicle’s dynamic performance.

The design concept is “seamless E-motion,” expressing the BEV’s powerful character and seamless acceleration. The result is a new, simple form that captures the spirit of technological evolution, function, and performance.

From spindle grille to spindle body

The frontal design powerfully distinguishes the RZ as a BEV. With no internal combustion engine, the bonnet has been lowered and the intake openings have been reduced. The spindle grille has been a signature feature of Lexus models for the past decade, but with the RZ the spindle shape has evolved three dimensionally and been applied instead to the vehicle’s body.

The look is accentuated by finishing what would usually be the grille area in the car’s body colour, and blacking out the area to each side. The greater design flexibility has also allowed more muscular front wings to be produced. The effect is heightened by an optional new bi-tone design for the bodywork which extends the contrasting black area from the roof to the bonnet.

The new-design headlight units are unified with the spindle body. Ultra-slim, they give extra emphasis to the Lexus L-motif of the daytime running lights, while the principal headlight lamps and turn indicators are made less prominent.

Powerful silhouette

The car’s side profile peaks towards the rear in a smooth silhouette. The sharp frontal design generates a sense of power and movement, while the condensed rear end affirms the car’s SUV qualities of comfortable space and strong driving capabilities.

The long, 2,850mm wheelbase adds to the impact of the design, expressing the low centre of gravity and excellent weight balance. The wheels – standard 18-inch or, for high grade, 20-inch diameter – are pushed right out to the corners of the car.

Rear design

The BEV character is also expressed in the RZ’s rear end design, with a cool, high-tech look. The split rear roof spoiler extends the design’s rearward flow and contributes to the car’s stable performance.

The elongated light bar across the width of the car has become a hallmark feature of Lexus design. Here it has a sharp, minimalist look with the top and bottom made as thin as possible to give the impression of simplicity and precision.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

The Lexus Driving Signature

Securing the Lexus Driving Signature was the primary goal in the development of the RZ’s dynamic performance and strengthening of the car’s core characteristics – the “three Cs” of confidence, control and comfort in all driving situations. Going further, the benefits of BEV-specific qualities, such as fast response and high precision were maximised.

Lexus has ensured the vehicle always responds as the driver intends, making driving both comfortable and exhilarating. Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe used “The Natural” as performance concept during the car’s development. He focused on driving quality with a natural feel, the car moving faithfully to the driver’s inputs through the optional One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system, an automotive world first, and precise DIRECT4 all-wheel drive control. Special attention was paid to giving the driver an excellent sightline and feedback and ensuring precise vehicle posture control, at all times.

Lexus’ dedicated battery electric vehicle platform

The quality and characteristics of the RZ’s new platform are the foundation for delivering the Lexus Driving Signature, with optimised BEV packaging, lower weight, optimum mass distribution and overall rigidity. These all contribute to the driver’s confidence, control, and comfort.

Body structure

The RZ’s e-TNGA platform is inherently strong, with the battery unit integrated into the chassis, beneath the cabin. This also helps lower the car’s centre of gravity, which in turn secures better chassis balance, handling, and response.

High-strength materials and metals are used in the RZ’s construction, with advanced construction processes to ensure exceptional strength where elements are joined together, while keeping weight down. This helps ensure precise handling and response and ride comfort.

Noise and vibration control

Although the battery electric drivetrain produces less noise, its quiet performance makes noise from the road and the car’s surroundings more noticeable. The RZ’s engineers and designers made it a priority to ensure the cabin environment was appropriately calm and quiet, adopting a three-part strategy: controlling the noise; preventing it from entering the cabin; and paying particular attention to noise experienced in the rear seats.

The engineers also applied an improved version of active sound control, which now uses the car audio speakers to produce sounds emphasizing powertrain response to stimulate an emotional connection between car and driver.

Electric e-Axle

The RZ uses the Lexus’ e-Axle that was first introduced in the UX 300e. This is a compact, modular package which consists of a motor, gearing and an ECU, located between the driven wheels. On the RZ they are used front and rear and operate in conjunction with the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive control system (details below) to adjust the vehicle’s posture, traction and power distribution, according to the driving conditions.

The e-Axles are quiet, efficient and deliver precise power. The front motor produces 150 kW and the rear 80 kW, giving a total power output of 230 kW. Both have superior power density, thanks to optimised rotor and stator design. Their compact dimensions also contribute to the car’s packaging, helping secure more space in the cabin and load compartment and to accommodate the EV battery.

First application of Lexus’ new DIRECT4 all-wheel drive control

The RZ is the first production model to feature Lexus’s new DIRECT4 system, working with the two e-Axles. DIRECT 4, an exclusive Lexus technology, is an intelligent system that constantly balances the traction of all four wheels, automatically and seamlessly distributing drive force. The result is stress-free performance and stable handling, with intuitive operation strengthening the sense of connection between driver and machine.

DIRECT4 uses ECU sensors to collect, evaluate and react to a range of factors, including vehicle speed, steering angle, and G forces. From these inputs, it calculates and immediately applies the appropriate drive torque to each e-Axle to maximise grip and traction. The front/rear torque bias can be adjusted from zero to 100 or 100 to zero in milliseconds – faster than any mechanical system.

With better communication between the road and steering wheel (or yoke), DIRECT4 also improves steering response.

Battery, driving range and efficiency

The RZ uses a lithium-ion battery in a stack comprising 96 cells, with a total capacity of 71.4 kWh. It is located entirely beneath the cabin and forms an integral part of the platform. Its position also contributes the car’s low centre of gravity.

Battery durability was a key consideration, in particular the level of performance that could be expected after 10 years of driving. Lexus expects the RZ’s battery to retain more than 90% of its capacity within that timeframe, thanks to a series of measures to safeguard quality and performance, founded on Lexus’ long experience of battery management technologies.

Details of the vehicle’s driving range and battery charging times will be announced at a later date, but Lexus expects the RZ will be able to cover more than 400 km in the combined WLTP cycle.

To help drivers maximise their vehicle’s range potential, the RZ’s selectable drive modes include a Range mode. This builds on the energy saving performance of the ECO mode by further adjusting certain vehicle settings: speed is limited, a different power distribution programme is initiated, and the climate control system is switched off.

Thanks to a focus on key factors, including optimised vehicle weight, battery power and performance, the RZ has a target consumption below 18 kilowatts per 100 km driven, which makes the RZ one of the most efficient BEVs on the market.

One Motion Grip: world first steer-by-wire system with a steering yoke

The One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system is one of the most significant new technologies featured in the Lexus RZ. There is no mechanical link and no traditional steering column; instead, an electrical connection is used to send inputs from the steering wheel and from the wheels. The result is instant response and more precise steering control.

The driver will also notice less steering wheel sway when travelling over rough roads; stable control and correction in strong crosswinds; and excellent straight-line performance on angled surfaces.

Steering feel is important for driver confidence and control. Lexus engineers have ensured the system still provides feel and feedback at all times, maintaining a strong connection between driver and car. There is also fail-safe provision of processors and an emergency power supply, should the system lose its principal power supply.

The optional One Motion Grip system comes with a new steering yoke, replacing the traditional steering wheel. The technology requires less steering effort from the driver; with only a 150-degree turn of the yoke needed to move from the straight ahead to left or right lock, there is no need for hand-over-hand turns.

The yoke’s “butterfly” shape has been developed with input from Lexus’ Takumi drivers, whose feedback helped hone every element to give the best performance.

With the steering yoke, the driver gains a more open view of the instrument binnacle and road ahead. Lexus’ designers took advantage of this to set the meters higher and further away than would be possible with a conventional steering wheel, minimising the driver’s need to adjust their sightline. This takes the concept of the Tazuna cockpit to a higher level, concentrating the driver’s attention on the road.

LIFE ON BOARD

Interior design and the Tazuna concept

The RZ’s cockpit is an evolution of the Tazuna concept. This brings together the driver’s position at the wheel and the precise arrangement of the meters, controls and displays to create a space where only small movements of hand and eye are required operate the vehicle. The principle is inspired by the small adjustments of the reins a rider uses to control a horse – the meaning of “Tazuna” in Japanese. With the introduction of the optional One Motion Grip (detailed above), the full benefits of the Tazuna driver cockpit philosophy can be realised.

The arrangement of the meters, head-up display and 14-inch multimedia display has been optimised and the instrument panel has been set low, further improving the driver’s forward sightline. The designers also interpreted the BEV performance in a clean and minimalistic look with fewer elements and less ornamentation, while still using high quality materials. The centre console features a new dial-type control for the shift-by-wire system, reflecting the overall design simplicity.

The cabin is designed as a light and open space, enhanced by ambient lighting with a wide spectrum of selectable colours to suit the mood of the journey. Lexus has also created a new illumination effect, In-ei, which produces different effects from with patterns of light and shadow across the door panels.

Advanced technology features

Lexus has introduced a number of human-centred advanced technology features in the RZ that enhance comfort, convenience, and life on board, reinforcing the spirit of Omotenashi hospitality.

Two are Lexus firsts: a dimmable panoramic roof with a special coating to reduce heat radiation, and a radiant heating system for the driver and front passenger.

Dimmable panoramic roof

The optional panoramic roof increases the feeling of space and light in the cabin. The glass has a low-e (low-emissive) coating that reflects infra-red radiation and reduces radiant heat on sunny days, while helping keep heat inside the cabin when the weather is cold. The roof also has an electric dimming function, which instantly switches from transparent to opaque with a simple touch control, cutting out any direct sunlight.

As a result, there is less need to use the air conditioning system to maintain a comfortable temperature and there is no need for a retracting sunshade, which saves weight – factors that reduce the RZ’s energy use and help maintain its driving range.

Radiant heaters

New radiant heaters are positioned at knee-level in front of the driver and front passenger, beneath the steering column and lower instrument panel. Provided in addition to seat heaters and a heated steering wheel, they help speed up warming for the driver and front passenger, generating the feeling of a warm blanket around the legs. Just as with the panoramic roof, they help save energy, reducing the load on the air conditioning system.

Multimedia system

The RZ is equipped with the all-new Lexus Link multimedia platform, with faster, more intuitive operation and increased functions for connectivity, efficient journey planning and information.

The system, which debuted in the new Lexus NX, includes “always on” cloud-based navigation, benefiting from up-to-the moment information on traffic events, accidents, and road conditions. The voice recognition function understands and responds to conversational requests and is able to detect commands when there is background noise. There is also a new “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant, and smartphone integration is enabled via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The vehicle’s DCM (data communication module) allows functions to be conveniently updated or added over the air, without any interruption to the vehicle’s use.

SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE

The RZ benefits from the advanced active safety and driver assistance systems featured in the latest, third generation of Lexus Safety System + with upgraded and additional functions and increased scope for accident risk detection.

Further advances introduced with the new RZ include Proactive Driving Assist with steering assist and a new monitor to check driver behaviour for signs of fatigue or distraction. Proactive Driving Assist uses the front camera to determine the angle of a bend, adjusting the steering appropriately when approaching and making a turn.

e-Latch system with Safe Exit Assist

The RZ is equipped with Lexus’ e-Latch, a smooth, one-touch electronic door release system. Its operation is linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor to provide Safe Exit Assist., which automatically cancels the door opening if vehicles or cyclists are detected approaching from the rear. Developed as a world-first, it is expected to help prevent 95% of accidents caused by door opening.

A digital rear-view mirror is also available, giving the driver a clearer view with no obstruction from headrests or luggage, and improved vision at night and in poor weather conditions.

POWERTRAIN

AWD

TYPE

AC SYNCHRONOUS ELECTRIC GENERATOR

TOTAL POWER OUTPUT (DIN HP / kW)

313 DIN hp / 230 kW

FRONT MOTOR (DIN HP / kW)

150 kW

REAR MOTOR (DIN HP / kW)

80 kW

TORQUE (NM)

435

EV SYSTEM

AWD

BATTERY

LITHIUM-ION

NUMBER OF CELLS

96

RATED VOLTAGE (V)

355

BATTERY CAPACITY (kWh)

71.4

PERFORMANCE

AWD

MAX.
