“Stay Ahead,” the launch campaign for the all-new Lexus RX featured a fast-moving film in the spirit of classic spy movies, following a hero character charged with keeping a mysterious briefcase out of the hands of his pursuers. The agent completed his mission in the RX, driving through the scenic streets of Girona in Spain to deliver his secret cargo. Now there’s a new twist in the “Stay Ahead” story.

In the next phase of the campaign this spring, Lexus invites people to try their luck at unlocking the briefcase to discover what’s inside. Those who crack the code will have the chance of winning an exclusive prize – one of five new NFT artworks, inspired by the famous Lexus Hoverboard.

The Hoverboard was chosen as the subject of the NFTs as it is a perfect expression of the technical innovation that continues to inspire Lexus. Created in 2015, the fully functioning machine used super-conductivity and magnetic levitation science to carry a rider – champion skateboarder Ross McGouran – the length of a purpose-built track.

In the all-new RX luxury SUV, the same pioneering spirit can be seen in Lexus’ first turbocharged performance hybrid electric system – the powertrain used for the RX 500h F SPORT that has a central role in the “Stay Ahead” film. This new electrification technology is also the first Lexus hybrid to work with an automatic transmission, delivering sharper, responsive performance and a higher level of driver rewards. The new range also includes the first plug-in hybrid electric RX, the RX 450h+, which runs by default in pure electric EV mode, and the self-charging hybrid electric RX 350h.

The “Stay Ahead” story continues in another short film which freezes at key moments where the player has 10 seconds to decide between two courses of action. Make the right choice, and the challenge moves to the next stage; pick the wrong option and it is game over.

Those who successfully navigate their way through the puzzle to open the briefcase can then put their name forward to take part in a prize draw to win an NFT.

The game can also be accessed via a QR code available to scan at Lexus Centres. It will be available to play through to 31 August 2023 and winners will be announced in September. Toyota Motor Corporation received the most model-level awards, six, of all manufacturers, for the Toyota C-HR, Highlander, Sienna and Tacoma in addition to the two Lexus models.

The 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 30,062 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded from August through November 2022.

The end of the film reveals nothing about the contents of the highly-prized briefcase – but Lexus enthusiasts will be able to join a competition to find out more and win exclusive prizes. More details will be released in April 2023, when the competition will be launched to the public.

As seen in the Stay Ahead film, the RX 500h Performance Hybrid combines elegance and power to maintain its position at the front of the pack. Other electrified powertrains offered in Europe include the RX 450h+, featuring Lexus’ benchmark plug-in hybrid electric technology, and the RX 350h, which introduces an efficient alternative to lower displacement diesel and petrol competitor models. Every time you get behind the wheel, the all-new Lexus RX has your safety at heart. It is constantly checking the traffic around you and the road ahead, on the alert for potential accident risks. When it detects a danger, it will warn you and, if need be, adjust speed, steering and braking to help you avoid an accident – or make the consequences less severe if an impact does happen.

The range and capability of its safety and driver assistance features are greater than ever before, thanks to the latest-generation Lexus Safety System +, a package that comes as standard on every RX model.

The quality of these technological advances has helped secure a top five-star rating for the new RX in the independent, rigorous safety testing and assessment programme carried out by Euro NCAP. They combine with the fundamental strength of the car’s construction and its ability to protect driver, passengers and pedestrians should an accident occur. The test scores show overall results of 90% for adult occupant protection; 87% for child occupants; 89% for vulnerable road users; and 91% for the performance of safety assistance features.

The car’s Pre-Collision System (PCS) now uses a combination of a radar and camera to gain a wider detection range and recognise more hazard types.  For example, when you’re making a left or right at an intersection, it can detect a head-on collision risk with oncoming traffic and crossing pedestrians. Response time has been made quicker and Emergency Steering Assist (ESA) with Active Support has been introduced, which instantaneously provides steering and braking assistance to help keep the car stable and within its traffic lane if you suddenly swerve to avoid an obstacle.

The PCS can detect sudden, unintended use of the throttle when moving at low speeds and suppress potentially dangerous acceleration. The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with auto-braking (RCTA) support safe overtaking and manoeuvring, while Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA), part of an extended safety package option, warns of approaching vehicles from either side at junctions with poor sightlines. The Blind Spot Monitor also plays a part in the Safe Exit Assist (SEA) function for the car’s e-Latch door opening system, which prevents doors being opened inadvertently into the path of vehicles coming from the rear.

It's only natural that drivers grow tired on a long journey, affecting their attention and reaction levels. Lexus addresses this issue with features that reduce the burden of driving and also keep track of the driver’s alertness.  The Driver Monitor uses a camera mounted above the steering wheel to constantly check the condition of the driver, recognising if they have lost concentration through tiredness or being unwell. In a world-first, the monitor is linked to the car’s active safety systems: if the driver fails to respond to alerts, it will suppress acceleration and bring the vehicle to controlled halt, activating the hazard lights.

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) comes into play when driving at lower speeds around town. It uses the car’s front camera to spot hazards such as pedestrians about to cross or walking along the edge of the road, parged cars and cyclists. On long highway drives, the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) keeps a safe, set distance from the vehicle ahead, slowing the RX down to a standstill if necessary. It can now respond to voice commands, and will automatically adjust vehicle speed when you approach a curve, to ensure smooth, stable progress. The system can also adjust speed to prevent “undertaking” – passing a vehicle on the wrong side on a multi-lane road. Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Lane Departure Alert (LDA) both help keep your car correctly centred in its lane, while Road Sign Assist (RSA) repeats warning and command signs on major route in the driver’s multi-information display, with a link to the DRCC for easy adjustment when a speed limit changes. Night-time driving is also made safer with automatic headlight adjustment between low and high beam – an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) or Automatic High Beam (AHB) according to the model specification.

While these features provide a comprehensive package – together with automatic parking functions – this is not the end of the story: over-the-air software updates allow for systems to be updated and extended seamlessly, with no need for the car to be taken to a workshop.

Lexus today unveils a transformation of its all-new RX 500h F SPORT Performance, inspired by Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This unique version of the large luxury SUV has been created in a collaboration between Lexus’ Calty North American design centre, adidas, adidas S.E.E.D. and 3D printing specialists Carbon, coinciding with the new movie’s worldwide release.

The project is in the spirit of Marvel “What Ifs” and helps celebrate the recent launch of adidas’ “Wakanda Forever” collection by bringing its Black Panther designs into the automotive space. Created for the world’s best athletes, adidas’ performance sportswear embodies the question “What If… Wakanda had a national athletics team?”.

The RX has been given a full body wrap that builds on the custom identity adidas has envisioned for the fictional African nation. It features a tribal print in the signature Wakandan purple used throughout the adidas sportswear collection. The bonnet is inlaid with a diamond pattern inspired by the Black Panther’s claw necklace. Characters from the fictional Wakandan alphabet are used for the F SPORT and Lexus badging, including the word “Vibe-Branium,” denoting the model’s full name: the Lexus RX 500h Vibe-Branium ( ) AWD DIRECT4. 

Michael Moore, Lexus International General Manager, commented: “The all-new RX 500h is part of our expanding Lexus Electrified portfolio with evolved, innovative technology that elevates the driver’s experience. There’s an athleticism in the RX’s performance that makes it a perfect fit for joining the “Wakanda Forever” team.”

Students from adidas S.E.E.D. (School for Experiential Education in Design) were challenged to reimagine the vehicle’s interior, again taking the new movie sequel as their inspiration.  They were guided through the creative process by Calty Design Research, Lexus’ North American design centre, with workshops on Lexus design principles, creative processes, colours, materials and the power of collaboration.

The custom build will feature future-focused designs, textures and materials, with adidas’s custom Wakandan tribal gold print featured on the seat upholstery, door panel inserts and purple sections of the steering wheel. The F SPORT door sill plate is translated in the Wakandan alphabet ( ) and the steering wheel is embroidered with “Wakanda Forever” ( ). Key tactile areas such as the steering wheel pad and front and rear headrests are covered in the Carbon 3D printed energy-returning athletic shoe mid-sole material used in the adidas 4D-FWD. The front head rests include the Lexus emblem and the rear centre head rest carries the iconic adidas’s logo. A laser-cut wood finish around the shift lever and gold trim accents help create a distinctively Wakandan environment. 

The collaborative project has been recorded in a documentary short film by multi-talented visual storyteller Cami Thomas. Set for release on digital platforms, this feature stands as another example of Lexus’ mission to inspire and nurture emerging creative talent.

The project also being celebrated with a limited-edition T-shirt designed by adidas S.E.E.D. students. This features an African proverb in Wakandan script, “ ” (“Educate a Woman, Educate a Nation”), rendered in the traditional Japanese Tategaki style. On the back of the shirt, the periodic table is transcribed in Wakandan, celebrating how the country’s vibranium resources helped it build its future-focused society.

This exclusive member of the all-new RX family of large luxury SUVs is a new kind of hybrid electric model – one with a primary focus on performance. The hybrid powertrain is rich in innovation: a new, high-torque, turbocharged 2.4-litre engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and a separate rear electric eAxle enabling Lexus’ new DIRECT4 precision all-wheel drive control.

This advanced powertrain is just one element in the equation. It works in harmony with a fine-tuned dynamic package of chassis, steering, suspension and braking to give the driver a constant sense of connection, control comfort and confidence. These are the key elements in the brand-defining Lexus Driving Signature, delivered to great effect in the RX 500h.

Chief Engineer Takaaki Ohno explains: “Our goal with the RX 500h was to create a car that gives an exhilarating driving experience and generates a dialogue with the driver. A new direction in hybrid electric technology

The new hybrid powertrain architecture is unlike anything Lexus has produced before. The essential self-charging principle is the same, but the front electric motor is positioned between the engine and the new automatic transmission, with a clutch on each side. This design gives strong power delivery while retaining the EV driving capability that’s characteristic of a Lexus full hybrid electric system. It is the most powerful RX yet, with total power output of 371 DIN hp and 550 Nm maximum torque. This translates into 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.2 seconds. This is the kind of performance you might expect from a three-litre V6 engine, but with superior fuel economy – the RX 500h achieves 8.0 to 8.3 l/100 km on the WLTP combined cycle.

A new, compact, six-speed automatic transmission has been introduced for the first time. It’s being used in preference to the eCVT system in other Lexus hybrid electric powertrains to better realise the potential of the high torque from the turbo engine and motor. It is engineered to avoid frequent shifts and offers the driver the option of manual operation using paddle controls on the steering wheel. When the driver presses the throttle, response is instant with a powerful, linear increase in speed.

The RX 500h is the first Lexus model to use a bi-polar nickel-metal hydride battery (NiMH). This technology reduces resistance so the battery has a higher load and unload capacity. It also allows the unit’s size to be optimised – 1.4 times the number of cells can be accommodated in the same space compared to the standard NiMH battery. These qualities enable twice the power to be achieved from a unit of the same size. The driver enjoys the benefit of stronger acceleration while the battery’s location beneath the car’s rear seat helps the low centre of gravity and avoids loss of cabin or load space. The battery is also quieter, thanks to refinement of its air-cooling system.

DIRECT4 all-wheel drive force control

The RX 500h is the first RX to adopt Lexus’ new DIRECT4, an intelligent electronic control system that instantaneously and seamlessly adjusts the front and rear drive torque to all four wheels to provide optimum grip and maintain stability.  Drive to the rear wheels is provided by the rear eAxle with a separate electric motor and inverter.  It makes for a more comfortable ride with better body control and a more rewarding experience for the driver, communicating a more connected feel between the road and the steering wheel.

Bespoke dynamic features

Like the rest of the new RX range, the RX 500h has the fundamental benefit of the Lexus GA-K platform, giving the car a low centre of gravity, high body rigidity and a balanced chassis with good inertia characteristics. Building on this, the cars dynamic elements have been tuned and engineered with a performance focus. These include Dynamic Rear Steering which automatically adopts the best steering angle for the rear wheels, according to the car’s speed and direction. At low speeds, the wheels move counter to those at the front for nimble manoeuvring, while at high speeds they turn in line with the front axle, helping keep the car stable. The system gives the rear wheels turning angles of up to four degrees.

More powerful brakes are fitted – 400 mm ventilated front discs with six-piston aluminium callipers that are opposed rather than floating (as on other new RX models), giving greater rigidity. With an enlarged pad surface area, they give liner, direct and stable stopping performance. They are also a stand-out feature for the model, being painted black and bearing the Lexus logo. Adaptive Variable Suspension is also provided, with fast-response, independent damping control applied at each wheel.

Performance styling

This is a car that stands out, with styling features added to the new RX’s “Next Chapter” design that express its performance character. These include dedicated split-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels, body colour wheel arch trims and sills, piano black details, aero profile bumpers, F SPORT badging and an exclusive mesh pattern for the grille. Inside, the theme continues with the F SPORT steering wheel, shift lever and scuff plates and an aluminium pedal set. The sports front seats are finished in leather with tactile Ultrasuede bolsters.

The striking design, produced by Reed and Lexus under licence from Warner Bros. Consumer Products, gives a contemporary twist to one of the movie’s themes: what if Dorothy had ignored the advice to “follow the yellow brick road” and taken the road less travelled instead? This echoes the RX’s reputation as a vehicle that captures the spirit of exploration and encourages journeys off the beaten track.

Harris Reed commented: “As a gender-fluid designer, I’ve always been fuelled and inspired by choosing the path less travelled. With the bold new design of the Lexus RX and the cinematic Hollywood classic “The Wizard of Oz,” I took inspiration from the literal interpretation of choosing your own path and pursuing a new journey down the red brick road, with a nod to the film’s iconic ruby slippers and my own designs.”

In creating the “Ruby Red Rims,” Reed took styling cues from two signature hat designs he produced for his recent Spring 2023 ready-to-wear collection. The backs of the rims are made of solid aluminium, finished with gloss-sealed glitter. The central Lexus logo sits in a polished ruby core that is brought to life by LED lights, while slim, radiating fins reveal the inner red colour from different angles. This creates a sense of magic as the wheels turn that celebrates the power of the ruby slippers. The dramatic change in colour signifies the transition between different worlds.

The luxury car brand welcomed cast members, celebrities and VIP guests, who took photographs in front of the all-new 2023 Lexus RX 500h. The hybrid electric vehicle was custom wrapped as a tribute to the new movie, complete with black panther claw decals on the hood. Behind the car was an LED screen featuring exclusive clips from Lexus. This is the third time the luxury brand has collaborated with Marvel Studios.

Danai Gurira, who is one of the stars of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” was stunning as she posed for photos on the red carpet and at the Lexus activation. Gurira’s character, “Okoye,” is also featured in the luxury brand’s latest commercial “An Electric Future,” which premiered earlier this month featuring the all-new, all electric, Lexus RZ 450e.

The cabin environment is perfectly controlled; the in-car entertainment and connectivity are seamless; and you can trust in the latest generation of safety features.

Today, there’s another priority to take into account: electrified performance that maximises fuel and emissions efficiency, whether you’re making a trip around town or heading for a distant holiday location.

But just as different manufacturers offer different interpretations of “luxury,” there is more than one approach to achieving the best balance of benefits from electrification.

These figures tell only part of the story. What sets the RX 450h+ apart from its competitors is what happens when the charge in the hybrid battery is depleted. In most other plug-in hybrid vehicles, the car defaults to its petrol engine, which means higher emissions and poorer fuel economy until it can be connected to a power supply for recharging. In the Lexus, the vehicle switches seamlessly to hybrid electric performance, so that the battery is recharged as you drive, and a high level of efficiency is maintained.

With the benefit of different selectable driving modes, you can maximise the benefits of the plug-in hybrid electric system on every journey. EV is the default mode: the car is locked into electric running until the energy in the battery is depleted. That’s regardless of how hard the accelerator pedal is used. Auto EV/HV mode allows the hybrid engine to be brought into play temporarily when the driver wants more power, for example when bursts of acceleration are required, reducing the draw on the battery’s charge. The driver can also opt to use HV model which maintains the battery’s level of charge by starting and stopping the engine when necessary.

What you experience is the result of an evolution of Lexus interior design, as Project Chief Designer Jota Kusakari explains: “We challenged ourselves to create a simple yet thoughtful space that didn’t rely on ornamentation.”

This approach in no way lessens the appeal of Lexus’ famous Takumi hand-crafted luxury: “We focused on giving the trim, seats and armrests a tactile feel worthy of a high-quality interior, even paying attention to the door opening and closing feel, and the audio quality, to realise a quality that inspires the senses,” says Kusakari.

The new design simplicity can be seen in the way the dashboard sweeps in a clean, continuous form, taking in the meter hood, instrument panel and the door trims.  Equipping the car with the new e-latch electronic door release system has allowed the interior handles to be moved lower down, allowing the upper section of the door panels to be carved out, creating a natural extension of the instrument panel.

Tazuna driver’s cockpit

The theme of simplicity perfectly complements Lexus’ Tazuna concept for the driver’s cockpit, which rationalises the location and ease of use of the controls and information sources, so that attention is focused on the job of driving.

“Embodying the Tazuna concept, the cockpit design realises a space that allows the driver to have a deeper, more intuitive connection with the car, enabling them to control it as intended.,” says Kusakari. This rationale is witnessed in details such as co-ordinated arrangement of the information sources – centre console display, meters and head-up display – so their contents can be viewed with just small adjustment of the driver’s eyeline.

Sensory quality

The sensory quality reinforces the impact of the design in everything the car’s occupants can see, touch and hear. This takes in everything from the new multimedia system with an improved HMI that combines intuitive touch screen and physical button controls, to the pleasing appearance and tactile appeal of new trims and upholsteries, the ambient lighting with a full spectrum of colour options and the reassuring sound made by the doors as they close.

The cabin’s relaxing, reassuring design is even reflected in way you can communicate directly with the car. The new “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant ready to respond to requests and commands using natural, conversational speech. Tell it that you’re hungry and it will recommend nearby places to eat; mention that you’re cold and it will adjust the air conditioning.

Authentic SUV practicality

The interior design is perfectly appropriate for an SUV, delivering the necessary practicality, convenience and flexibility. Thanks to clever packaging and design, there’s more knee room for rear seat passengers and a better view both to the side and ahead, helped by the car’s lower belt line and the wider forward field of vision. Access has been made easier with a lower hip-point and adjustment of the easy access power adjustment. For family trips, the rear load compartment matches the current RX for capacity, despite the new model having a shorter rear overhang; the space has been achieved by design solutions including a thinner back door, a more upright rear suspension design and a lower load height.

The team responsible for crafting the exterior design of the all-new Lexus RX large luxury SUV had a clear mission: to give the car a unique identity with proportions born from its dynamic driving experience. This approach marks further development of the “Next Chapter” Lexus design, introduced with the new generation NX model, through which the styling directly communicates the car’s performance and the quality of the driving experience.

At the same time as the designers could look to the future, there was also a requirement to project the quality of Lexus as a global luxury brand.  The new model also had to be recognisably as an RX, with details that reference its heritage as the world’s first premium recreational SUV and the luxury market’s first hybrid electric model.

The successful incorporation of these diverse qualities is witnessed in a car that projects a powerful road presence and performance potential, with a bold appearance and firmly planted stance.  The sense of “newness” is immediate and strong, giving the car visual impact to match the quality of its three new electrified powertrains: the RX 500h performance hybrid, RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid and RX 350h full hybrid.

The car’s side-on appearance was of particular importance for exterior design lead Nozomi Hirai and her team: “The first thing we wanted to express was a bold appearance and stance with a low centre of gravity and a solidly planted feel,” she said. “To do this, we established a horizontal front-to-rear posture… by raising the front of the bonnet and lowering the bottom edge of the rear window, compared to the current RX. By lowering the belt line, we compressed the area above the wheels, creating a solid, low centre of gravity and well-grounded look.”

While the new RX is similar in overall length to the current model, the bonnet has been elongated, with the A-pillar moved further back and the wheelbase has been extended by 6 mm. This has the effect of making the weight of the cabin appear to rest on the rear tyres, while sculpted surfaces on the door panels, flared rear wings and 21-inch wheels add a sense of powerful traction, likened by the designers to an animal about to spring forward.  “I think the uniqueness of Lexus is evident in these kinds of expressions,” said Hirai, “The opposing elements coexist well, with a solid feel that begins at the front, moving towards the dynamic rear surfaces.

The front of the car displays a completely new look. Next Chapter design has taken the concept of the spindle shape from the signature Lexus grille to create a new spindle body effect. The grille meanwhile has been reinterpreted as a seamless unit: integrated into the body, it is also an expression of the RX’s electrified power. The arrangement of the new slim headlight units and a front track that is wider by 50 mm add emphasis to the car’s lower centre of gravity and planted look.

At the rear, the RX’s characteristic “floating roof” effect created by a blacked-out D-pillar is retained, but given a stronger three-dimensional look. This combines with a roofline that has been lowered by 10 mm to generate a coupe-like silhouette. The look of a condensed, powerful rear is heightened by a shorter rear overhang and a sweeping transition from the wings round to the tail lights. The rear combination lights are set in a light bar that spans the width of the car and wraps around the corners to heighten the wider look.

World Music Day (21 June) encourages people around the world to enjoy making and sharing music together. For Lexus, it is an opportunity to celebrate an exclusive and long-running partnership with luxury audio specialists Mark Levinson that has brought great music to millions of Lexus drivers and passengers.

Together, Lexus and Mark Levinson (one many prestige brands owned by parent company HARMAN International) have been raising the bar for the quality of in-car entertainment for more than 20 years. Today, bespoke sound systems are developed for each new model, benefiting from ever-more sophisticated technologies to deliver the best listening experience for everyone on board. That’s true whatever your listening preference: the grandeur of a symphony hall, the intimacy of jazz club or the thrill of a stadium gig – the sound reproduction gives you the sense that you are part of the event.

The latest fruits of this partnership will be revealed later this year with the launch two all-new SUVs – the new generation RX SUV and the ground-breaking, all-electric RZ.

“It’s really a partnership that begins with understanding the vision for the car and its occupants,” explains Savion Thompson, Acoustics Engineer at Mark Levinson. “Our team makes a point to learn early what a model means to Lexus, then we develop the system to enhance this vision.

“We do a lot of listening – to the chief engineers, the factory workers and the dealerships, and then to the buyers. Part of my job is to know what is out there, but even more important is to choose the right fit for the car. That’s a process that takes an entire team and constant feedback at every checkpoint, following a strong philosophy of constant improvement, or kaizen,” continued Thompson.

The synergies between the two companies include the fact they both aim to deliver the highest standards. “We strive to be the highest performing audio brand in the world,” says Kyle Roche, Senior Global Marketing Manager at HARMAN. “Aiming to achieve near zero per cent harmonic distortion and crystal-clear acoustic performance, our goals align with Lexus very closely. That is one of the reasons why the partnership has lasted for more than 20 years.”

One of the most recent examples of Mark Levinson’s work in a Lexus production model is the audio system tailor-made for the new NX 350h hybrid electric SUV. The focus of the development programme was to use new PurePlay architecture to create a 7.1 surround sound effect, bringing the sound closer to the listener’s ear level and taking the listening experience beyond what might be expected from an in-car audio system. This reflects how the quality of the audio contributes to Lexus’s famous omotenashi hospitality principles, going beyond people’s expectations to make them feel completely at home in their car.

Work began on designing the audio system around five years before the model’s market launch and involved close scrutiny of the size and shape of the vehicle interior.

“Space is always at a premium, particularly in a vehicle the size of the NX,” says Savion Thompson. “However, both Lexus and Mark Levinson set a goal to keep the sound system as close to ideal as possible. This called for months of vehicle study, lots of hand-made prototypes, simulations, measurements and presentations. The team persisted, even stripping the vehicle down to the sheet metal and reworking the factory process to make way for innovation.”

There is also the quest to find the right balance between performance and efficiency: “As vehicle manufacturers strive to increase output while using fewer resources, the multimedia system has to respond to the same challenges. Every millimetre of space and gramme of material needs to be negotiated with a clear value-added purpose,” Thompson adds.

The Pureplay speaker layout in the NX features seven matched 90mm speakers, positioned strategically around the cabin to create an enhanced sound stage. To this are added an internally coupled subwoofer, and 8x9 door woofer and a brand-new, fully discrete 12-channel amplifier.

“The amplifier is the core of our sound,” says Thomson, “we have been working on it for five years in what has been a true collaboration between our automotive and luxury teams.”

Today Lexus reveals the 5^th generation RX, a completely reinvented model, opening a major new chapter for this iconic SUV.

The pioneering RX has become a Lexus bestseller over the last two decades. With more than 3.5 million units sold worldwide since its introduction in 1998 – of which 300,000 in Europe - this 5^th generation RX is pivotal to the brand’s future ‘Lexus Electrified’ strategy.

Together with the recently launched NX and newly revealed RZ, RX will help build the ‘Next Chapter’ of the Lexus brand. These three models represent the strongest offensive yet in the D-E Premium SUV market, the heart of Lexus’ business.

Lexus has further developed its new ‘Next Chapter’ design language for the new RX. This includes a new ‘spindle body’ that was achieved by integrating the spindle concept into the entire front of the vehicle. The RX team also found inspiration in the rich RX design heritage. The result is a car that is instantly recognisable as RX, but with a more dynamic, elegant and confident character.

Inside, the driver-centred ‘Tazuna’ cockpit focuses on giving the driver direct, intuitive control of the vehicle, following the principal of ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’. It also improves the driving experience, with its intuitive and clean layout, enhanced by a new 14” touchscreen.

The new RX comes with a line-up of three different electrified variants in Europe. At the core of the brand’s offering in Western Europe, the RX 450h+ will welcome RX customers to Lexus’ benchmark plug-in technology. With the new RX 350h hybrid, Lexus introduces an efficient alternative to lower displacement diesel and petrol powertrains. And for those drivers looking for more exhilarating performance, Lexus introduces its first ever turbo hybrid, the RX 500h, which comes with DIRECT4 drive force control.

For Eastern markets, alongside the RX 500h performance hybrid, Lexus also presents the RX 350 with a 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering higher performance than the current model.

To craft the new RX’s bespoke ‘Lexus Driving Signature’, Lexus optimised the SUV’s fundamentals such as the centre of gravity, inertia specifications, weight reduction, rigidity, and powertrain to create a more natural dialogue between car and driver. The improved handling and responsiveness come from an enhanced GA-K platform that delivers excellent body rigidity and a low centre of gravity.

Leveraging Lexus’ world-class safety technology, the RX offers the 3^rd-generation Lexus Safety System+, with improved Pre-Collision System, new Proactive Driver Assist and Extended Safety Package. The RX also features the latest multimedia platform with Hey Lexus Smart Voice Assistant and the Lexus Link app.

A PIONEERING STORY

On its launch in 1998, the RX 300 became the world’s first luxury SUV, creating a whole new car segment, with styling, acceleration, handling and quietness worthy of a luxury car. In 2005, the RX 400h heralded the world’s first luxury hybrid car, with a revolutionary powertrain that combined a V6 petrol engine with a potent electric motor, a technological breakthrough that served as a launchpad for the entire Lexus hybrid line-up. Praised by customers for its comfort, refinement and quality, in 2016 the RX was the first Lexus model to receive Lexus Safety System+ technology. In 2019, RX showcased the world’s first BladeScan^TM Adaptive High-beam System, a technology which uses a rotating blade-shaped mirror for enhanced illumination from LED headlights.

‘NEXT CHAPTER’ LEXUS DESIGN

“First we created a dynamic exterior design to express a captivating, engaging presence, and a solidly planted stance to evoke driving performance. We then refined the proportions to express the elevated driving experience and added new drivetrain technologies like DIRECT4,” explains RX Chief Engineer Takaaki Ohno.  

Moving towards electrification, the designers undertook the challenge of incorporating the new ‘spindle body’ design identity into the new RX. This resulted in improved grille integration that expresses a sense of electrified power and a low centre of gravity. More compact and sharper headlights, air intakes and a wider track (15 mm) further consolidate the stable, confident look.

To achieve a bolder stance, Lexus designers developed a sleeker front-to-rear posture, by extending the bonnet, lengthening the wheelbase by 60 mm and lowering the roofline by 10 mm. Lending the car a coupé-like feel, the signature black rear pillar (Lexus’ so called ‘floating roof’) is now more three-dimensional in appearance, while extra RX dynamism comes from the sweeping character line and large 21” wheels.

Triple LED headlights are sleeker, sharper and more horizontal. The design, accentuated by the L-shaped Daytime Running Lights, creates a powerful look. To the rear, the single-line Lexus signature taillights underline the car’s iconic RX shape, while the wider track (50 mm) emboldens the stance and road presence. The introduction of the new “LEXUS” badge on the tailgate creates a clean and contemporary look.

Accentuating RX’s sporty credentials, the F SPORT features enhancements in the execution of the front grille, skirts and the aerodynamic front and rear bumpers. The grade will only be offered as RX 500h performance hybrid or RX 350 in Eastern Europe.

UPGRADE IN LUXURY

To make the cabin more driver-centred, Lexus developed the Tazuna cockpit concept. Introduced first on the new NX and RZ, it is now adopted for the new RX. Taking its name from the Japanese word for ‘reins of a horse’, Tazuna focuses on direct yet intuitive control. In the cockpit, information sources like the multimedia screen, multi-information display, single-dial meter, centralised gauges and head-up display are grouped so their content can be read with minimal eye and head movement.

“A powerful blend of Tazuna cockpit design and luxury SUV spaciousness, with materials like high-quality leathers and Takumi-crafted suede embossed with the Lexus ‘L’, is exactly the kind of bespoke look we aimed for when designing this new interior,” explains RX Interior Designer Jota Kusakari.

The designers sought to create a minimalist, yet intuitive and thoughtful interior space using the highest quality materials. The front seats have been redesigned to offer top-class accessibility, excellent support and heating/ventilation. To provide proper ergonomic support around the waist, a concave shape was created in the seat sides.

A significant highlight of the new RX is the availability of an animal-free leather interior, created in response to growing demand from vegan and other eco-conscious consumers. This means that on Comfort Grade not only seats, but also the steering wheel and shift-knob, are covered with synthetic leather. Here customers can choose between Black and Ammonite Sand.

An expression of the Lexus ‘Omotenashi’ hospitality, the 'Lexus Mood Selector’ feature allows occupants to tailor the RX’s ambient lighting from a palette of 64 colours and 14 bespoke themes.

The new RX offers both ample luggage space and five luxury seats with excellent legroom. Thanks to the increased couple distance (1010 mm, +10 mm vs. previous model), newly designed seats and more intelligent packaging, Lexus were able to make the RX feel roomier inside. By lowering the loading height by 30 mm it is easier to use. Thanks to intelligent tailgate design, the luggage compartment is now 50 mm longer. This extra length helps accommodate bulkier objects, whilst the 40:20:40 split rear seats can accommodate for items like skis or surfboards.

The new e-latch system electronically controls the door operation, making them smoother and more convenient to use.

LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE: COMFORT, CONTROL, CONFIDENCE

All RX models will deliver the ‘Lexus Driving Signature’ in their own way, thanks to the outstanding credentials of the platform and the powertrains, but with a common thread: superior comfort combined with a new level of responsiveness, linear and direct response, keeping the driver in control at any time and resulting in an immediate feeling of confidence.

The new RX is built on the GA-K platform, similar to that of the NX, but with a different set up. For instance, the rear has been completely redesigned to extend the wheelbase but also implement additional cross members and suspension braces that increase rigidity. This increased rigidity has allowed Lexus engineers to tune the suspension more accurately, improving not only performance but also comfort.

This new RX platform has allowed a 90 kg drop in the car’s weight and a reduction in the overall height of 10 mm, resulting in a 15 mm lower centre of gravity. The wheelbase is extended by 60 mm while keeping the overall length and reducing the yaw. At 15 mm in front and 50 mm to the rear, the track is also wider, and, combined with the 21” wheels, gives the RX a more confident stance and grip.

To save weight, Lexus used advanced materials like 2GPa high-tensile steel material for the centre pillars and aluminium for the wings and bonnet. The new structure also includes 1180 MPa steel for the rocker reinforcement and 1470 MPa steel for roof rigidity.

Enabling a substantial hike in performance, the new multi-link rear suspension delivers better lateral stability and anti-squat characteristics. Capable of handling higher levels of torque, it also substantially reduces noise, vibration and harshness.

While ensuring Lexus-like quietness inside the cabin with sound-damping and vibration reduction measures, engineers and craftspeople created sounds to add a sense of power and performance. To inspire the senses, they also perfected the luxury car door sound. 

EXPANDED ELECTRIFIED LINE-UP

Leveraging the ‘Lexus Electrified’ strategy that takes a multi-tech approach, and drawing on more than 15 years of experience in electrified technology, the all-new RX continues to push boundaries: highly refined Lexus self-charging hybrid performance or superior Lexus plug-in hybrid power and efficiency.  

RX 500h: A GAME-CHANGING PERFORMANCE HYBRID WITH DIRECT4

The game-changing new RX 500h performance hybrid is the first-ever Lexus turbo-charged hybrid and was developed for customers thirsty for high-end electrified performance.

With power delivered by a completely new hybrid architecture consisting of a 2.4-litre turbo engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, it delivers 371 DIN hp for exhilarating acceleration and superb dynamic handling thanks to DIRECT4. The front electric motor is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission, with a clutch on both sides, enabling great flexibility in power delivery.

The rear is equipped with an 80kW e-Axle: a compact, modular package consisting of a motor, gearing and an ECU located between the rear wheels. Its compact dimensions help secure more space in the cabin and boot.

Power delivery is controlled by DIRECT4, an exclusive new Lexus drive force technology launched recently on the RZ 450e. This intelligent system constantly balances the power and torque between the front and rear axles in any driving situation, by automatically and seamlessly shifting the drive force between the 2 axles more precisely than any mechanical system could ever do.

Enabling more feel between the road and steering wheel, DIRECT4 delivers improved handling stability and excellent driving dynamics at high speed. Importantly for the RX 500h, it also enhances the ride comfort with the instant torque that helps control body movements.

Because this is a high-performance hybrid, Lexus fitted opposed callipers to the front brakes to realise a powerful braking and Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) that determines the optimum steering angle for the rear wheels.

RX 450h+: THE FIRST PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC RX

Lexus used more than 15 years of electrification expertise to produce the RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that is viewed as the logical step-up for many of its current generation RX 450h customers.

Expected to be the best-selling RX model in Western and Central Europe, the RX 450h+ features a four-cylinder 2.5-litre hybrid engine and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 18.1 kWh. An additional rear electric motor enables full-time all-wheel drive. The plug-in system produces 306 DIN hp and is expected to deliver 0-100 km/h acceleration in around 7 seconds. Overall, it offers roughly the same output as the outgoing RX 450h, but with more torque and faster acceleration. With more of the power coming from the electric motors, driving feels effortless yet refined. It will also boast significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions. Estimated target CO2 emissions (WLTP combined cycle) of less than 26 g/km and fuel economy of less than 1.2 l/100 km are set to be very competitive.

The lithium battery’s size/capacity and Lexus’ electrification know-how combine to deliver a competitive EV driving range of around 65 km (target, pending homologation) and enable all-electric driving up to 135 km/h. Crucially, the Lexus plug-in hybrid maintains high efficiency when the battery is depleted, as the RX 450h+ switches to its advanced 4^th generation self-charging hybrid system.

RX 350h: EFFICIENT 4^th GENERATION SELF-CHARGING HYBRID

The smoothness and efficiency of the RX self-charging hybrid model have been improved with the introduction of the brand’s 4th generation Lexus self-charging hybrid technology on the new RX 350h. This 2.5-litre petrol drivetrain provides 245 DIN hp and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8.0 seconds, which is comparable with the current RX 450h, while at the same time producing lower emissions. The RX 350h will be a strong alternative to low displacement diesel competitors and ideal for customers putting priority on comfort and efficiency.

Offered exclusively in Eastern Europe, the new RX 350 is powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged unit that develops 279 DIN hp (or 249 DIN hp in certain markets) and 430 Nm of torque, which is substantially higher than previously. Its strength is matched by the rapid response of a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission with shorter ratios.

A brand-new, electronically controlled, permanent all-wheel drive system ensures power is effectively transmitted in low-grip conditions like gravel tracks. Torque allocation between the front and rear axles can be adjusted from 75:25 to 50:50 according to the driving conditions.

INNOVATIVE LEXUS MULTIMEDIA AND CONNECTIVITY

The new RX delivers advanced connectivity that is both faster and more stable, providing the latest multimedia technology, “always connected” services and the convenience of over-the-air updates. Using smartphone, navigation, vehicle commands, multimedia functions and cloud connectivity, there are about one hundred ways for the driver to interact with the new RX.

The RX features a 14” touchscreen as standard, one of the largest in its class. The anti-glare screen has additional buttons for intuitive access to the most frequently used functions. Graphics are presented in HD for excellent visibility in all lighting conditions, while the CPU is 3.6 times faster than the current system.

Alongside the standard embedded navigation system, the new RX also provides cloud services as standard (in markets where the service is available). The car’s DCM (data communication module) provides always-on connectivity, providing live information on traffic events, accidents and road conditions.

The new multimedia system includes the smart voice assistant ‘Hey Lexus’ that responds to questions and commands given in a more natural style of language. Easy smartphone integration is provided as standard – wireless for Apple CarPlay and with a wired connection for Android Auto. A wireless charging tray is available, with 50% quicker charging performance.

In addition to established Lexus Link remote functions such as driving analytics, hybrid coaching, fuel level monitoring and “find my car” function, new functions are available for the RX 450h+: monitoring the level of battery charge, scheduling charging and a charging timer. The app also allows locking and unlocking the vehicle, opening the tailgate, operating the climate control, or even flashing the car’s hazard lights can also be illuminated to identify the car in a car park.

High grade versions of the RX come standard with a new 21-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound audio. Developed by Lexus’ exclusive audio partners, the system is optimised for the car’s interior architecture.

ADVANCED DRIVER SUPPORT

Lexus introduces many advanced human-centred technologies in the new RX to enhance comfort, convenience and life on board, reinforcing the spirit of Omotenashi hospitality.

The RX can be specified with a digital rear-view mirror which gives the driver a wide, unobstructed field of vision, using real-time images from the car’s reversing camera.

For easier driving in confined spaces, the Digital Panoramic View Monitor provides a live 360° view around and pre-recorded view under the car from cameras that can now be cleaned automatically. It also creates a virtual 3D image of the RX, showing the vehicle as if seen from above.

The new RX is available with an Advanced Park system, developed from that on the Lexus LS flagship sedan. It helps park using automated control of the steering shift operation and braking. The system uses the car’s array of four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to gain an all-round picture of the car’s surroundings. It will also recognise up to three regularly used parking spots.

SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE

The new RX benefits from next-level active safety and driver assistance systems featured in the latest, third generation of Lexus Safety System+ with upgraded functions and increased scope for accident risk detection and prevention.

The improvements include further expansion of the Pre-Collision System’s ability to detect motorcycles and other objects in the car’s path. It can also recognise collision risks with oncoming traffic or crossing pedestrians when making a turn at a junction. Its detection response is quicker and the ability to avoid an impact is increased by Emergency Steering Assist.

Enhancements have also been made to the Adaptive Cruise Control so that it now more quickly recognises traffic cutting in in front and, in conjunction with upgrades to Lane Trace Assist, follows a more natural line through bends. The ACC has also been expanded to respond to more signs and commands, including warning signs and STOP signs.

While Lexus Safety System + is fitted as standard on all European models, owners of higher- grade models can choose an Extended Safety Package. This includes Lane Change Assistance (LCA), which provides automatic lane change steering on the motorway and Front Cross-Traffic Alert, which uses radar monitoring to warn the driver of traffic approaching from either side.

Also introduced now on RX, Pre-Collision System with Active Steering Assist determines when there is a high possibility of collision with a pedestrian ahead or with an object. If the system also determines that it is difficult to avoid the collision with brake control alone – but that it might be avoided using steering control – the system assist uses Active Steering Assist in addition to activating an alert and applying the brakes.

Proactive Driving Assist helps maintain a safe distance to cars in front – even when cruise control is not engaged – and it helps the driver to avoid pedestrians and obstacles.

Driver Monitor uses a camera mounted above the steering wheel to constantly check the condition of the driver. It is even able to slow or stop the car if driver doesn’t react to alerts.

The RX’s e-latch electronic entry and exit system is linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor in the exclusive Safe Exit Assist function, which prevents the driver from opening the door if any traffic like cars or cyclists is approaching from the rear. Lexus estimates this system can help prevent more than 95% of the accidents caused by door opening.

The pioneer of luxury SUVs, RX has undergone a complete renewal, with even more refinement and comfort.

As its name declares, the new RX Sport Edition gives Lexus’ large luxury SUV stronger, sportier appeal with a series of exclusive design elements, inside and out. As a special model – available for a limited period only – it builds on the success of the previous Sport Edition with an enriched specification that adds a distinctive style twist to the RX line-up.

The Sport Edition has immediate road presence thanks to black-finished details including the front grille and door mirror covers, matched with dark-finish 20-inch alloy wheels. The hybrid electric RX 450h has a black front under-run, emphasising the model’s SUV status.

The appearance of the petrol-powered versions, RX 350 and RX 300*, is enhanced for Lexus’ Eastern European markets with the addition of an aero body kit, amplifying the RX’s contemporary styling with front, rear and side skirts, colour-matched with the vehicle’s bodywork. In Russia and Kazakhstan, the Sport Edition’s special status is denoted with unique Black Vision badging.

In the cabin, the signature look for the smooth leather upholstery is a combination of Black and White Ash with contrasting light grey stitching. The same colour theme is applied to the soft-touch surfaces on the centre console, door trims and passenger knee pad, with the grey stitching repeated around the shift lever gaiter. The steering wheel is finished in black leather and Sumi Black Walnut, matching the cabin’s wood trim inserts, and the door panels have integrated illumination. Customers can also specify Black or Rich Cream leather upholstery if they prefer.

The RX Sport Edition also benefits from a higher equipment specification. Standard high-tech features include a wireless phone charging tray, power back door with kick-sensor hands-free operation, a multimedia and navigation system with a 12.3-inch touch screen and 12-speaker premium audio system. Front and rear parking sensors with Intelligent Clearance Sonars and auto braking are provided, together with a Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert – again with automatic braking*.

These features are in addition to the established Mid/Executive grade specification, which also provides Lexus Safety System + active safety and driver assistance systems, door mirrors with Blind Spot Monitor and auto-dimming and auto-retracting functions, heated front seats and triple-eye LED headlights with Bladescan Adaptive High-beam System*.

The new RX Sport Edition is being introduced across Lexus’ European markets during September to launch the 2022 model year RX range. The new line-up offers 10 exterior paint colours, including two new options, Sonic Silver and Sonic Grey, both of which use Lexus’ advanced sonic paint technology to achieve exceptional depth of lustre and light and shadow contrasts.

The RX has the distinction of having been the world’s first luxury hybrid vehicle, with the RX 400h introducing the technology to the premium segment in 2004.

Now in its fourth generation, the RX has constantly evolved to deliver higher levels of comfort, refinement and hand-crafted luxury, together with greater efficiency and higher driving rewards from its self-charging hybrid electric system. The range has also grown to include a purpose-designed seven-seat model, the RX-L. Lexus has already sold 500,000 hybrid RX vehicles in the world, including 131,000 in Europe.

INTRODUCTION

To celebrate over 15 years of leadership in self-charging hybrid technology, Lexus recently put its 4^th generation UX 250h hybrid crossover ‘head to head’ against the first pioneering Lexus RX 400h hybrid SUV at its state-of-the-art Technical Centre and Proving Ground at Zaventem in Belgium. With the track evaluation performed by Herwig Daenens, hybrid drivetrain expertise was provided by Raf Schuermans, Technical Senior Manager for 'Advanced Powertrains' at Toyota Motor Europe.

    1. DRIVING DYNAMICS

“The latest UX 250h demonstrates the vast improvement in driving dynamics that Lexus has achieved since 2005. Crafted for the European driver, with part of the development work performed by the Lexus R&D Centre in Zaventem, it was incredibly fun around the track today. This is thanks mainly to its new and super-rigid GA-C platform that makes extensive use of adhesives, its low centre of gravity resulting in reduced chassis roll and precision of the electric power steering,” enthuses Herwig Daenens

UX 250h delivers hatchback-like handling

In almost perfect conditions at the Zaventem Proving Ground, whilst the RX 400h luxury SUV delivered impressively refined performance, steering response and straight line stability, Herwig Daenens explained how the UX 250h benefits most from one person: Akio Toyoda, Lexus’ Master Driver, who insists that every new Lexus must be ‘fun to drive’. This ambitious goal meant creating a highly rigid new platform as the perfect foundation for the hybrid crossover’s hatchback-like handling.

Lowest centre of gravity in its class

Thanks to its new platform and the position of the hybrid battery, the UX 250h has the lowest centre of gravity in its class. This characteristic, central to the car’s dynamic performance, is complemented by weight-saving measures in the body construction, such as lightweight aluminium for the side doors, wings and bonnet.

    2. HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

Combining the power of a petrol engine with one or more electric motors, Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids have always set the benchmark for luxury car electrification. As the name implies, Lexus hybrids charge themselves whilst they drive, slow down or brake, meaning owners never have to plug them in or worry about battery range. Now in their 4th generation, as well as offering refined power and control, Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids are more efficient and produce considerably fewer emissions than conventional petrol or diesel engines.

RX 400h: The hybrid pioneer

Orchestrating power from a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine and front/rear electric motors, with the RX 400h, Lexus seized the initiative to become the leader in alternative powertrains, soon launching a range of Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids. Driving the RX 400h, Herwig Daenens was reminded just how very advanced the first luxury hybrid was and why it proved such a success.

A major breakthrough at the time was its high voltage hybrid battery pack, rated at 288-Volts and containing 30 9.6-Volt cells. Compact and lightweight, it is located under the rear seat. Compared to the petrol-powered RX 300, the RX 400h offered luxury SUV drivers a substantial 33% improvement overall in fuel consumption with a massive 67% in the city and assumed a pathfinder role in introducing Lexus owners to electrification without range anxiety, charging concerns or compromised packaging.

Advanced, maintenance-free hybrid engineering

On the test track the RX 400h still drives with the same smoothness and refinement as it did when leaving the Kyushu plant in 2005. This is because the majority of competing hybrid systems are based on multispeed direct transmissions or automatic transmissions, involving multiple clutches and actuators that are subject to wear and tear. Lexus’ hybrid transaxle design, by contrast, offers a system that, alongside minimal repair bills, ensures the premium driving experience remains over the car’s entire lifetime.

"Claiming the RX 400h is ‘good as new’ may seem clichéd, but this car’s reliability is a testament to the unwaveringly smooth performance of the Lexus hybrid drivetrain, even after so many kilometres on the clock. Importantly, because the UX 250h uses the same basic drivetrain architecture at the RX 400h, but with a vastly improved hybrid transmission with more compact electric motors and direct gearing for a more engaging drive, we can expect our latest urban crossover to deliver similar class-leading levels of QDR (quality, reliability and durability),” explains Raf Schuermans.

UX 250h: 4th generation Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid

Moving to the UX 250h, there’s been a quiet revolution under the bonnet of Lexus hybrids since the RX 400h. No longer a technology reserved for expensive flagship models, 4^th generation Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids like the UX 250h and ES 300h achieve higher fuel economy and lower emissions, while enabling much greater distances to be covered in all-electric EV mode. At the same time, overall power, responsiveness and driving quality have been taken to a higher level.

This continuous progress has been achieved because Lexus engineers have focussed on developing ever more compact and refined components that deliver better performance. In fact, over the past 25 years, Lexus and Toyota have registered over 24,000 patents for self-charging hybrids and EV technology - more than any other carmaker. Signalling its leadership in the field, in 2018, the Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it would allow royalty-free access to its patents for hybrid and other vehicles using electrification technology.

Many of these innovations can be found on the new UX 250h tested in Zaventem:

World-class petrol engine efficiency

Whilst the RX 400h’s powerful 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine was ground-breaking at the time, the UX 250h’s all-new 2.0-litre engine incorporates engineering breakthroughs including fast-burn combustion technology that makes it the most thermally efficient engine to feature in any production vehicle. Around sixty different prototypes were engineered to evaluate new technologies before more than 10 million kilometres of road testing were carried out.

4^th generation battery technology

Like the RX 400h, the UX 250h uses the luxury brand’s proven Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) technology but in more advanced form. The number of cells has been increased, realising high power output and more proactive usage of battery power, and the size of the battery pack has been reduced through optimisation of the internal layout and adoption of a more compact cooling system.

More compact, lighter and extremely reliable batteries

Lexus has used Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery technology to power most of its 1.8 million hybrids. This technology is extremely reliable, will normally last longer than the car and can be more easily recycled than other battery materials. Continuous ‘Kaizen’ improvements over the last 25 years mean this cost-efficient battery technology has reduced in weight by up to 50% and size by 60%.

Reengineered hybrid transaxle

Whilst the RX 400h introduced a hybrid transaxle that controls the electric and mechanical power sources, for the new UX 250h every element was scrutinised to see how the 4^th generation unit could be made smaller and lighter. A new multi-axle arrangement of Motor/Generator1 (power generation) and Motor/Generator2 (drive) resulted in a more compact and lighter design. Frictional losses have been reduced by about 25% by changing to a simpler parallel shaft gear. While the new transaxle’s compact dimensions contribute to the UX 250h’s class-leading turning radius, a new system for returning cooling oil improves smoothness and reliability.

More efficient Power Control Unit (PCU)

Far smaller and lighter than that on the original RX 400h, the UX 250h’s new PCU is mounted immediately above the transaxle, thus realising compactness and weight reduction of the entire hybrid system and providing more space inside the engine compartment. Finally, a new and smaller power card features double-sided cooling efficiency, while optimising the output filter has reduced noise levels.

Over 50% of the time in zero-emissions mode

Driven in large part in busy urban areas, the UX 250h takes the benefits of Lexus’ self-charging hybrid technology to a new level. Recent tests in Belgium show that for 57% of the time the UX 250h is driven with the petrol engine switched off, with almost 45% of the car’s drive power sourced from the electric motor and 34% of the power used to drive the wheels produced simply by the act of braking or slowing down.

Compact E-FOUR AWD system

With the trend towards urban crossover driving with limited off-road demand, the UX 250h AWD features a much smaller and more compact rear electric motor than the RX 400h’s relatively large 50 kW unit. The UX 250h’s E-FOUR all-wheel drive system uses a separate, dedicated hi-torque motor generator integrated into the rear differential. Power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimised between 100:0 and 20:80 by the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces.

    3. EXTERIOR DESIGN

A lot has changed at Lexus since the RX 400h was unveiled, not least its approach to design. A tribute to the skills of the craftspeople at the company’s Kyushu plant in Japan - a factory specially built to craft the luxury brand’s hybrid models. Back then, the first Lexus hybrids featured bespoke hybrid wheels, front grille, fog lights and transparent rear lights.

“Whilst the RX 400h’s iconic shape displays elegance and class, next to it, the UX 250h looks much more dynamic with its sculpted lines and bold Lexus signature grille. From a performance point of view, I like its numerous aerodynamic refinements and low driving position for a more engaging drive,” comments Herwig Daenens.

Parked alongside its pioneering stablemate, the latest UX 250h displays a bolder design and a much more athletic stance, accentuated by the sharply sculpted bodywork, Lexus signature grille and L-motif triple LED headlights. To the rear is a one-piece combination light that is not only eye-catching but also aerodynamically efficient. Fins are integrated into the light to reduce turbulence, enhancing rear stability during cornering as well as in sidewinds. Now the best-selling Lexus model in Europe, the UX 250h crossover has made the Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid available to a far wider range of owners.

4. INTERIOR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Seated behind the wheel, the roomy RX 400h cabin still exudes an undeniable sense of SUV luxury and refinement. Leatherwork, cabin mouldings and all instruments have worn well and still look ‘factory new’. The RX 400h’s equipment list is impressive too, with technologies like multi-zone climate control, 11-speaker Mark Levinson® premium audio and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps that would not seem out of place in any luxury specification today.

"Inside the RX 400h offers both room and refinement and still looks very fresh after 15 years of daily use. Interestingly, the UX 250h’s Takumi-crafted interior contains many of the design features we first developed for the Lexus LFA supercar back in 2010. Things like the driver-focussed cockpit and instruments, figure-hugging leather seats and LFA-inspired steering wheel all put me in the mood for driving today,” said Herwig Daenens.

More than anything, it’s the advance of in-car communication technology that stands out. Once reserved for flagship models, today UX 250h owners enjoy innovations like a 10.3-inch multimedia display with Panoramic View Monitor, extra-large Head-Up Display and a 13-speaker Mark Levinson® Premium Surround Sound system. Perhaps most importantly, whilst the RX 400h was the first SUV to benefit from Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), the new UX 250h comes with the pioneering Lexus Safety System + that includes a Pre-Collision System, now with daytime/night-time pedestrian detection and bicycle detection during daylight hours.

Applying painstaking attention to detail, Lexus created a new Sport Edition model for its RX luxury SUV line-up ^*.

The focus is on the exterior, where the RX’s incisive, emotional styling is given a sporty edge with a series of new touches. These are led by a black finish for the signature Lexus spindle grille, striking a sharp contrast with the chrome surround. The five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels are in dark bronze, while the door mirror casings are black, like those featured on the RX F SPORT.

In Lexus’ Eastern European markets, including Russia, the Sport Edition also comes with a new body aero kit that subtly strengthens the RX’s road presence. This includes lower side sills, front lip and lower rear bumper in the vehicle’s body colour, emphasising the RX’s dynamic lines and planted look. A “Black Vision” badge adds a finishing touch on the back door^**.

Lexus is making its high quality Tahara upholstery available to more customers, offering the look and suppleness of leather in a durable product that contains no animal-sourced materials. As an alternative to leather, Tahara is more environmentally efficient to produce and makes the RX accessible to a larger range of customers.

With over 3,1 million units sold worldwide, the RX is well-established as Lexus’ most popular and successful model. The originator of the global luxury SUV market, the RX continues to evolve with striking design, craftsmanship detailing and the application of advanced technologies.

Today’s fourth generation model provides seamless connectivity and access to information that lets the driver keep their focus on the road ahead. Smartphones can be integrated with the vehicle’s multimedia system via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, gaining access to Siri and the Google Assistant. On higher grade models, phone operation, navigation, access to connected services and control of the sophisticated climate control system are managed via a 12.3-inch central display that can be operated with touchscreen commands, voice control, or an intuitive touchpad. A colour head-up display can also be specified, which projects key vehicle and journey data onto the base of the windscreen, in the driver’s natural line of sight.

The latest Lexus Safety System + equips the car with active safety and driver assistance features that will alert the driver to collision risks, and intervene to help prevent an impact if necessary. The most recent Pre-Collision System now can detect pedestrians in the vehicle’s path in night-time driving, and cyclists in daytime. The RX also marked a world-first in adopting a new BladeScan Adaptive High-beam System, automatically giving deeper and wider forward illumination from the LED headlights.

In 2005, Lexus introduced self-charging hybrid electric power to the luxury car market for the first time with the RX 400h. Today that technology has developed to become the principal powertrain choice for European customers, offering even higher levels of fuel and emissions efficiency, combined with an engaging, quiet and refined driving experience. Within Lexus’ European markets, the RX is also available with a 300 DIN hp 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine (RX 350) and a 238 DIN hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit (RX 300).

The new RX Sport Edition will be introduced from late September, with availability limited to one year only.

Over the years, each SUV and crossover model has helped propel the brand forward by blending bold design, adventure capability, renowned Lexus craftsmanship and sophisticated technology into a unique utility vehicle package that results in ever-increasing numbers of loyal Lexus customers.

The Lexus crossovers (RX, RXL, NX and UX) have enjoyed popularity globally with the availability of both full hybrid and petrol drivetrains. First launched with the game-changing RX 400h hybrid SUV in 2005, hybrid sales today account for about one third of Lexus’ global SUV volumes, rising to 96% in Western and Central Europe.

The Lexus design team listened to feedback from current RX drivers around the world when developing their ideas for how they could refine the vehicle’s styling and make the new RX a car that would exceed customers’ expectations.

Development and production teams collaborated closely on the project, with the aim of giving the new RX the kind of Brave Design that is central to today’s Lexus models. The design theme was “seductive strength,” expressed in a more captivating exterior and maximising of the interior packaging – a quality that has proved particularly attractive to customers. The challenge to the designer team was to add elegance, but without diminishing the RX’s powerful SUV image.

Particular attention was paid to surface quality, incorporating more rounded, elegant surfaces at the front and rear. Finer details included changes to the shape, size and mesh pattern of the spindle grille, a new, narrow-aperture shape for the headlights and a distinctive new illumination signature for the rear combination lights.

Exterior design

In revising the RX’s exterior design, Lexus focused on the vehicle’s overall form and silhouette, taking into account the balance between the front and rear and aiming to create a powerful, solid look that generates a greater sense of unity from one end of the vehicle to the other. This can be seen in the body line that flows directly from the front bumper to the sides of the doors, while the shape of the rocker panel now extends from below the doors, flowing into the bottom edge of the front grille, generating a powerful and stable appearance.

The front bumper itself has been changed from a straight and sharp form to being slightly rounded. The surface quality appears tauter, while still being in harmony with the overall design. The shape of the underguard has been changed too, so that it wraps around to the sides, emphasising the width and subtle ruggedness of an urban SUV.

The spindle grille is a central design element for all Lexus models and for the new RX a designer was assigned to work solely on this element of the vehicle. It took almost six months to hand-craft a new mesh pattern, comprising thousands of individual lines.

The bottom edge of the spindle grille frame has been raised, changing the frame’s proportions to harmonise with the sides of the vehicle bodywork. The grille features a new L-shaped block mesh that changes in size as it radiates away from the central Lexus emblem. This design was introduced on the new UX urban crossover, and its application on the new RX creates a new unity within Lexus’ SUV line-up.

The new headlight units present a strong and deeper Lexus signature, with even illumination across the entire surface of the daytime running lights. The same compact headlight unit as Lexus’ LC flagship coupe is adopted, with three projector bi-LEDs. In addition, F SPORT and LUXURY grades use the world’s first BladeScan Adaptive High-beam System, a technology breakthrough that provides deeper and more even illumination (details below).

At the side, the continuity between the front overhang and the doors has been accentuated, with the peak of the cross-section running straight along the side of the vehicle, strengthening the dynamic impression.

At the rear, the “seductive strength” theme can be seen in a new character line which runs from the side of the bumper to the lower reflector, shaped to echo the flow of the rear window graphic. The profile of the bumper matches the form that flows rearwards from the quarter panel, creating a sleeker look.

The bottom edge of the rear bumper has been lowered and all the rear design elements have been set on a horizontal axis, including the combination lights, reflectors, exhaust outlets and the underguard, giving a stronger impression of width and more powerful stance.

The combination lights have a new design of four overlapping L motifs. This distinctive pattern is inverted for the sequential turn indicators, which are set parallel to the upper brake/tail lights.

Two new exterior colours, Terrane Khaki and Ice Ecru, are added to the palette. The exterior styling changes are completed by new 20-inch alloy wheels with silver multi-spoke design.

Aerodynamic features

A number of aerodynamic elements are incorporated in the bodywork, which help achieve a 0.33 drag coefficient and also contribute to vehicle stability and low cabin noise levels.

They include:

• A front under spoiler which directs airflow to the underbody, reduces aerodynamic drag and supports driving stability
• Fin-shaped corner sections beneath the headlights which improve airflow along the sides of the vehicle
• Front pillars designed to create less wind noise during high-speed driving
• Aero-stabilising fins on the tail-light covers, which wrap into the rear wings to give extra aerodynamic stability at the rear of the vehicle
• A rear spoiler across the width of the roof/tailgate window, which reduces lift and adds rear downforce
• A diffuser beneath the rear bumper, which smoothly draws airflow from beneath the vehicle, reducing drag and giving extra stability

Interior design

The cabin design strikes a balance between functionality and luxury, finished with refined materials that exude quality construction and craftsmanship. The ambience is spacious yet intimate, with high levels of comfort for driver and passengers.

To accommodate the new human-machine interface, the screen has been moved further forward on the centre console, within easy reach of the driver and front passenger. The middle column has been redesigned for better trackpad version of Lexus’ Remote Touch Interface integration.

The RX’s seats deliver both support and comfort with an ergonomic design and quality detailing that includes a vertical stitching pattern that is both good-looking and durable. The quilting pattern on the front seat seatbacks matches that on the door panel trims.

The driver and front passenger seats are low-set, allowing for excellent headroom. The position of the steering wheel closer to the driver and a lowered angle for the steering column create a more involving driving position.

The new interior colour is available: Ochre.

The F SPORT grade features refined genuine materials in the interior trim, such as premium leather, natural wood, and brushed aluminium. The new interior colours feature Flare Red and Black and White combinations.

New RX L seating option

The new Lexus RX L gives customers the choice of specifying a three-seat second row bench that divides 60:40, or two individual captain’s seats, with manual fold and recline adjustment. The second row also benefits from a slide range extended by an extra 45 mm to 165 mm, providing easier access to the third-row seats.

Third row seats can be moved forward and backward electronically depending on the customer’s needs, providing additional legroom (+95 mm) for people sitting in the third row. The third-row seat adjustment can be operated via a button from second row or the boot.

Dimensions and packaging

The current generation RX was designed with a more spacious interior, particularly for rear seat passengers. By using a new frame construction for the front seats, more legroom was obtained for the rear passengers, adding an extra 20 mm of knee clearance compared to the previous model. And to help front seat occupants find the ideal seat position, the seat height adjustment range was increased by 15 mm.

The RX is both longer and wider than the previous generation model: width grew by 10 mm to 1,895 mm and length by 120 mm to 4,890 mm; the height was unchanged at 1,685 mm.

The extra length crucially saw 50 mm added to the wheelbase (2,790 mm), allowing for a more spacious and comfortable interior to be designed.

Lexus has comfortably accommodated an extra, third row of seats in the RX L model by adding 110 mm to the rear overhang, taking the vehicle’s overall length to 5,000 mm, and by giving the tailgate window a steeper angle to secure generous headroom for the rearmost passengers.

RX F SPORT

The RX F SPORT raises the sporty image to a higher level with a series of special visual and performance features that distinguishes it from other RX grades.

Exterior details include a black finish to the F SPORT exclusive spindle grille mesh and a new mirror black frame that blends into the side of the front bumpers providing a unified profile. The lower spoiler and a satin-chrome front under guard complete the front fascia redesign.

The 20-inch F SPORT wheels have a multi-spoke design and are fitted with 235/55 tyres.

The interior is styled to suit the F SPORT’s character with exclusive details such as highly supportive seats with quilted upholstery, aluminium trim inserts and the choice of a Black, Black with white accents and Flare Red with black accents colour-way. The shift lever and three-spoke steering wheel are also specific to F SPORT, and covered in a tactile perforated leather, and there are drilled, non-slip aluminium sports pedals.

The instrument cluster is different, too, with an eight-inch display dominated by a larger, circular gauge that cleverly combines the functions of a tachometer and speedometer.

POWERTRAINS

The new RX retains the model’s well-proven range of efficient and responsive powertrains:

• The RX 450h equipped with a self-charging hybrid electric powertrain, featuring a highly efficient 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine
• The RX 300 with a 2.0-litre turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine
• The RX 350 powered by a 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission

The RX 450h is available across all European markets; the RX 300 is offered in selected markets; and the RX 350 is sold in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan and the Caucasus region.

RX 450h

The RX 450h’s self-charging full hybrid system features a 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine, with maximum output of 193 kW/262 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm with 335 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. The total system output (engine and electric motor combined) amounts to 230 kW/313 DIN hp.

The engine’s combustion chamber design generates a high degree of tumble inside the cylinders, improving combustion performance. According to the WLTP cycle, CO₂ emissions start from 172 g/km and fuel consumption goes from 7.6 l/100km to 7.9 l/100km. (Correlated NEDC figures: fuel consumption combined: from 5.8l/100km, CO₂ emissions start from 132 g/km)

The powertrain of the 2020 Lexus RX has remained unchanged and the below improvements apply to the 4^th generation Lexus RX. The key components and control systems in the Lexus Hybrid Drive System have been improved and re-engineered to deliver class-leading fuel economy, minimal emissions and excellent on-road performance. The front transaxle gained a new water-cooled transmission oil cooler for the electric motor and a pre-loaded differential to improve performance and straight-line stability.

The rear transaxle featured in the E-Four system used by the all-wheel drive version of the RX 450h was redesigned with a three-shaft configuration, creating a more compact unit in which the input shaft can be moved as close as possible to the output shaft. The design also saves weight by using aluminium for the case and cover.

The shape of the intake ports and combustion chambers generates a high degree of tumble inside the cylinders, improving combustion efficiency.

Other updates to the system included a design evolution of the Power Control Unit (PCU), and HV Engine Control Unit (ECU) that delivers better energy efficiency, more driver-friendly operation and more refined performance. A lighter, more efficient electric water pump was introduced and the hybrid battery was repackaged, making it more compact and improving space efficiency. The E-Four electric all-wheel drive system’s control functions were improved to give better response when accelerating through bends.

RX 300

The RX 300 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers superior fuel economy and driving performance, characterised by crisp throttle response and instant torque delivery throughout the rev range.

The unit produces 238 DIN hp/175 kW between 4,800 and 5,600 rpm, and 350 Nm of torque from 1,650 to 4,000 rpm. Combined cycle fuel consumption (WLTP data) is from 9.6 to 10.4 l/100 km with the CO₂ emissions starting from 218g/km to 236g/km. (Correlated NEDC figures: fuel consumption combined: from 8.1 l/100km, CO₂ emissions start from 185 g/km)

The transmission is a six-speed Electronically Controlled Transaxle (6ECT) automatic, a lightweight and compact unit engineered for efficiency and performance. Key features include a reduced-friction clutch and thrust bearings, an electric oil pump and a torque converter developed specifically for use with the 2.0-litre turbo engine.

The engine benefits from Lexus’ ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficiency Combustion) and D-4ST direct fuel injection. ESTEC improves the engine’s thermal efficiency through better combustion in each cylinder. D-4ST supports combustion efficiency with a chamber design that gives a high tumble ratio.

The twin-scroll turbocharger features an air-to-liquid intercooler and is mounted directly on the engine. It delivers optimal torque from low to high rev ranges and has a light, compact design achieved with new manufacturing technologies and materials. Further benefits include reduced friction in the bearing mechanism for better overall performance, reduced noise and vibration, cleaner emissions and increased component strength and durability.

The engine’s efficiency is also helped by a high, 10.0:1 compression ratio, a balance shaft (reducing noise and vibration), a lightweight roller/rocker valvetrain, a piston-cooling oil jet control system and VVT-i intelligent variable valve-timing (“wide” VVTi-W on the intake side).

The engine operates on the highly fuel-efficient Atkinson cycle.

RX 350

Performance, fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with smooth, highly refined running in everyday driving are characteristics of the RX 350’s 3.5-litre direct injection V6 engine. Power is rated at 300 DIN hp/221 kW at 6,300 rpm, with 370 Nm of torque generated at 4,700 rpm.

A new cylinder head design with reshaped intake ports and combustion chambers – which increased the compression ratio to 11.8:1 – helps raise combustion efficiency, while friction losses between the piston and bore have been reduced by a new cylinder machining method and resin coating.

As with the 2.0-litre turbo engine, the V6 reaps the benefits of VVT-i/VVT-iW variable valve-timing and Atkinson cycle operation, without compromising engine start-up performance in extremely cold weather, or wide-open throttle driving.

A number of features contribute to its status as the highest-performing engine yet for an RX model:

• Increased flow velocity, achieved by reducing the cylinder head’s intake port diameter, improving high rev range performance and giving a steep, continuous acceleration curve.
• A lightweight roller/rocker system, with a reduced-friction timing chain and lighter internal parts, allowing higher engine speeds and lower friction losses in the valvetrain.
• An exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR), which reintroduces cool exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber, helping maintain an optimal engine operating temperature.
• A variable-length surge tank which prevents a loss of torque at mid-range engine speeds.
• An oil pump that sends an optimal amount of lubricant to each part.

Power is delivered through a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, with close gear ratios tuned to deliver punch off the line and robust passing power, while maintaining excellent fuel economy.

Other advanced transmission features include Linear Driveforce Management, maximising engine torque for each gear; Downshift Control which matches the driver’s accelerator pedal input – smooth or rapid – with an appropriate downshift response; and a Multi-mode function that allows rapid up and downshifts using paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

All-wheel drive systems

The all-wheel drive versions of the RX 300 and RX 350 use a Dynamic Torque Control system which operates using data from a series of sensors monitoring G forces, wheel speed, steering angle and other vehicle parameters. Drive torque is instantaneously routed to the rear wheels to gain maximum traction on different surfaces and in different driving conditions. The torque distribution ranges from 100:0 (pure front-wheel drive) to 50:50, via an electronically controlled coupling. This gives the effectiveness of a full-time AWD system, but with superior fuel economy.

The all-wheel drive version of the RX 450h uses Lexus’ proactive E-Four system, provided by an additional motor/generator located on the rear axle. Fuel and energy use are reduced, as AWD operation is limited to only when necessary, allowing the rear-mounted motor to act as a generator to charge the battery when the vehicle’s regenerative braking system is operating.

Torque distribution levels front and rear and to each individual wheel can be shown on the driver’s multi-information display.

F SPORT Tuning

A tuned sound generator with three resonance frequencies is available for the RX 350 F SPORT. This uses air intake pulses to raise the sound pressure level of frequencies that are pleasant to the ear and enhance the driving experience. Light and relaxed sound is generated in mid to high rpm acceleration, with a more powerful note produced at higher engine speeds.

CHASSIS AND DRIVING DYNAMICS

Lexus targeted better driving performance, in particular handling stability, for the new RX, and also sought to improve ride comfort and give the driver a greater sense of unity with the vehicle. An increase in body rigidity has been central to achieving these goals, through an increase in the number of spot welds and a greater amount of structural adhesive in the vehicle’s construction. Detailed adjustments and changes have also been made to the suspension and damping system.

Body rigidity

Lexus engineers identified key areas in the rocker panels, rear wheelhouses and the underbody where additional spot welds and the use of structural adhesive could deliver a more rigid body for the new RX. In all, an extra 4.2 metres of adhesive and 14 weld points have been added in these areas, accomplished using the existing tooling on the production line at the Kyushu plant. This increases the integrity of the panel joints, benefiting both stability ride comfort.

Laser screw welding is also used in the RX’s construction and high-tensile strength steel is used in key areas such as the underbody cross members and the front and centre pillar sections. A ring-frame construction technique adds strength to the frame sections around the front and rear doors, while areas around the rear body frame have numerous spot welds to give more strength and handling stability. These measures contribute to handling quality and cabin quietness, as well as the overall structural rigidity of the vehicle platform.

Suspension

The new RX offers more agile handling and driving pleasure, whether driving on urban streets or open, winding roads thanks to changes to its suspension and damping.

The key was to increase suspension rigidity, focusing on the hub bearings to gain improved responsiveness. At the same time, a thicker rear anti-roll bar has been added with a hollow rather than solid form. This decreases the roll angle, reduces understeer and also saves weight.

The thickness of the anti-roll bar allows for a reduction in coil spring rates, ensuring a high level of overall ride quality. The spring rates and bushing rigidity of the rear suspension are calibrated to complement the sturdiness of the car’s front end.

MacPherson struts are used for the front suspension, with trailing arms/double wishbones at the rear – a set-up designed to give extra stability through corners and excellent handling overall.

Friction Control Device

A new friction control device has been introduced in the front and rear shock absorbers to help give a flat ride on roads with slightly uneven surfaces, and to improve steering responsiveness.

The device is located inside the shock absorbers and has a rubber lip that helps reduce the high frequency vibrations that are generated by minor unevenness in the road surface and can’t be controlled using hydraulic pressure.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS)

The new RX adopts the latest Adaptive Variable Suspension technology, which allows for much finer control of damping force on each wheel to reduce shock and maintain a flat, comfortable ride even on very rough roads and surfaces. Damping force is reduced at low speeds and increased at high speeds, reducing body roll and enhancing steering response.

The actuator uses a linear solenoid, located on the lower side of each shock absorber, below the spring. This design contributes to a lower bonnet line and less intrusion in the rear load space.

The number of damping force levels has been increased to 650 to provide constantly variable damping. The result is smoother, quicker and more precise control in response to changes in road surface quality and the driving conditions.

The system has a number of integrated functions, including Roll Posture Control, Anti-Pitch Control, Repercussion Control and Roughness Sensing Control, to adapt AVS performance to all road surfaces and driving dynamics.

On models equipped with AVS, the Drive Mode Select system adds Sport S, Sport S+ and Customise selectable drive modes, raising performance and driver rewards (further details below).

Active stabiliser suspension

The RX F SPORT grades offer a world-first active stabiliser suspension system. This suppresses roll without detracting from ride comfort, and maintains stability when turning.

There are two control modes, operating in line with the Drive Mode selected by the driver. In Eco, Normal and Sport S modes, the focus is a composed, natural and comfortable vehicle posture, with initial turning response. With Sport S+ mode, the turning posture is more stable with more agile turning response.

When driving on uneven road surfaces, the Roll Skyhook Control helps maintain comfort by suppressing vehicle movement in the direction of body roll. The system detects the direction of vehicle roll from data from the vertical G sensor, then activates the appropriate stabiliser actuator to suppress the movement.

Steering

The RX’s electric power steering is calibrated to communicate excellent road feel to the driver. The rigidity of the intermediate shaft and the instrument panel also contributed to good steering feel, with refinement details such as a slowing the steering wheel movement as it returns to centre, adding to the overall controllability, smoothness and responsiveness. The steering wheel is set at an angle that makes it easy to hold the desired turning angle when driving deep into a bend.

Extended reach and rake adjustment makes it easy for the driver to set an ideal position, while the low-set steering column helps provide a sportier driving position.

Active Cornering Assist

The newly added for the RX 2020 models Active Cornering Assist maintains comfort while working to faithfully trace the driver’s desired line on winding roads or through bends, by suppressing the tendency to understeer that commonly occurs when the driver presses the throttle during high-G cornering.

The vehicle stability control (VSC) applies brake control to help prevent the car skidding when speed is too high during cornering. If the driver presses the throttle while the car is understeering in a high-G turn, the VSC will apply braking control to the inner wheels, generating a yaw moment and suppressing the understeer.

Brakes

The RX’s powerful braking system uses front and rear ventilated discs to obtain exceptional stopping power and fade resistance. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard.

Drive Mode Select

The RX’s Drive Mode Select system lets the driver choose from different settings to suit their preferences, or the driving conditions. Each setting adjusts the suspension damping force, engine output, throttle response and other chassis and engine parameters.

The standard system provides Normal, Eco and Sport modes, while versions of the RX fitted with Adaptive Variable suspension additionally feature Sport S, Sport S+ and – a Lexus first – Customise modes.

Eco mode moderates throttle response and engine power output and adjusts climate control operation to support fuel economy.

Normal mode provides an even balance between engine performance and fuel economy. Together with Eco mode, it provides a suspension setting that prioritises comfort.

Sport mode ramps up performance with sharper throttle response and acceleration and adds weight to the steering.

Sport S sets an even higher performance level, with revised throttle mapping and quicker powertrain response. In the RX 450h, the hybrid system allows for enhanced accelerator response and a feeling of more powerful acceleration.

Sport S+ combines the powertrain enhancements of Sport S mode, while sharpening the feel of the electric power steering and initiating stiffer suspension for flatter cornering.

The Customise mode lets the driver combine their preferred settings for the engine/hybrid system, chassis and air conditioning to suit their preference. This can be accomplished in an easy-to-follow process using the RX’s central display screen.

The driver can also make use of an EV mode which switches the vehicle to all-electric operation, shutting down the petrol engine until the limit of charge or speed is reached.

Noise and vibration measures

Lexus engineers scrutinised the smallest details to identify measures that might reduce noise and vibration levels to a minimum.

For example, a cowl silencer was deployed and holes and gaps in the dashboard silencer have been minimised to improve sound absorption and insulation. The surface area of the cowl insulator was increased and the bonnet insulator made thicker. The apron silencer is also 10 to 20 per cent larger, reducing the penetration of engine noise, while even the material used for the wheelhouse liner was changed, to a non-woven type, cutting road and gravel spatter noise.

To reduce wind noise around the front pillars, the shape of the cowl louvre, the triangular “patch” ahead of the quarterlight and the shape of the door mirror were adjusted. The door mirror units were moved further back to avoid wind turbulence, and a regulating lip was added to the cowl louvre, redirecting the airflow away from the mirror.

In addition, on the RX 450h and RX 300 FWD models, the dynamic damper installation and the left front suspension member mount have been adjusted to reduce any booming noise.

Other measures in the body include acoustic glass in the side windows, sound-damping coatings for the vehicle floor, careful positioning of the rear body frame to reduce lateral vibration and strategic use of foam/sponge vibration damping material around the door apertures and front header. Sound-absorbing materials are featured in key areas of the cabin, ceiling and floor to prevent the intrusion of noise from the engine compartment and from outside the vehicle, and the doors feature full-edge double seals.

ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES

Lexus Safety System +

The RX comes equipped with the latest version of Lexus Safety System +, an integrated safety package that delivers even higher levels of active safety and driver assistance to help prevent accidents happening, or reduce their severity should an impact be unavoidable.

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) uses a front-mounted camera and millimetre-wave radar to detect vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If it calculates a risk of a collision, it automatically warns the driver and provides extra braking force the moment the brake pedal is pressed. If the driver fails to react and the system judges a collision to be imminent, the brakes are automatically applied to reduce vehicle speed and the force of any impact, and the seatbelts are tensioned. The functionality of the PCS has been increased so that it is now capable of detecting pedestrians in the vehicle’s path in both day and night-time driving, and bicycle riders during daylight hours.

The same radar unit is used to provide all-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Once the way ahead is clear, the RX automatically accelerates to its pre-set cruising speed. The system is able to provide low-speed following, making driving more relaxing as well as safer in stop-start traffic.

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) detect when the RX deviates from its correct traffic lane, without the turn indicators being used. The system will automatically provide a warning andlane steering inputs to help keep the vehicle centred in its lane, detecting markings on the road surface, or the road margin. These features operate when the Adaptive Cruise Control is being used and can be switched off, if desired.

The driver also gains a “second set of eyes” when it comes to important road signs on motorways and major routes. The Road Sign Assist system uses a front camera to recognise principal warning and command signs, which are then replicated on the multi-information and head-up displays, reducing the risk of the driver not being aware of speed limits, lane closures and other important information.

Lexus Safety System + further includes Automatic High Beam (AHB), which detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead and automatically switches the headlights between high and low beam.

Advanced Driver Assist Features

World-first BladeScan^TM Adaptive High-beam System

High grade models feature an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) which now adopts a world-first BladeScan technology; it provides even better illumination by adjusting light distribution to avoid dazzling other road users, instead of switching the headlights to low beam.

BladeScan gives the driver a wider field of illumination that conventional LED array-type headlights, with smooth and fine light distribution. The technology addresses the fact that many pedestrian accidents happen during night-time driving, making it easier for the driver to see pedestrians on the road margin further ahead.

In simple terms, light from the LEDs in the headlamp unit is projected onto a blade-shaped mirror that rotates at the speed of 6000rpm. The light reflected from the mirror passes rapidly through a lens to give forward illumination. Because of the residual image effect, there is no sense of the light moving, but in fact the light is turned on and off, time in perfect synchronisation with the rotation of the mirror, enable fine control of light distribution. The system allows the range of high beam illumination to be broadened naturally. As a result, road margins and other areas ahead that a particularly difficult of the driver to see become brighter and more visible. Pedestrians and road signs can be discerned earlier, without the risk of dazzling oncoming or preceding vehicles.

A lamp ECU in the left side headlight checks environmental information from the front camera, such as the presence of vehicles ahead and ambient brightness, together with vehicle speed and yaw rate information. Using this data, it operates the LEDs and adjusts brightness for optimum light distribution.

An array-type AHS changes light distribution in increments of one to two degrees. This can make the light appear to flicker, which can be uncomfortable for the driver. BladeScan has been developed with 0.1-degree increments in light distribution to give sufficiently bright light without appearing unnatural.

With a switched array-type system, pedestrians can be detected up to 32m ahead; with BladeScan this distance is extended to 56m.

The technology has been developed during the past 13 years by Lexus and Koito Manufacturing. The research determined the optimum design for a fan-shaped blade, durable enough to endure constant high-speed rotation at 6,000 rpm. This involved using a high-performance ball bearing in the small motor that rotates the mirror and fine adjustments to the position and balance.

Durability has been proven in running tests lasting more than 10,000 hours. Testing took into account whether operation might affect safety systems that use cameras, the impact of different weather conditions, such as fog, snow and rain on performance and whether the strobing of light could cause health problems

As well as meeting performance targets, the system also had to be accommodated in the RX’s new, narrower headlight units. Thanks to the close co-operation between Lexus and Koito Manufacturing, this was achieved so that each unit contains three projector bi-LEDs and an independent BladeScan unit.

Sway Warning

The cameras used in the RX’s Lane Tracing Assist also provide a Sway Warning function. This monitors the car’s position in its lane and the driver’s steering inputs. If it detects degrees of vehicle swaying, caused by driver distraction or drowsiness, it will sound an alert and display a warning on the multi-information display, recommending the driver takes a break.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) control

When the Pre-Collision System determines that there is a high likelihood of a collision, the Adaptive Variable Suspension Control system instantaneously adjusts shock absorber damping within the suspension to enhance the vehicle’s responsiveness as an additional driver aid (featured on vehicles equipped with AVS).

Panoramic View Monitor

Negotiating a tight parking space or making your way over rough and unmade surfaces are made easier and safer in the Lexus RX with a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor. This uses an array of cameras that give the driver an all-round view of the vehicle’s location, plus a bird’s eye view for even better sight the RX’s immediate surroundings.

The Panoramic View Monitor can reveal obstacles, hazards and other vehicles that may be hidden from view from the driver’s seat, eliminating any blind spots. When steering the car into parallel or series parking spaces, the Parking Assist Monitor can add guidelines to the real-time camera images to help the driver steer precisely, while front and rear sensors will sound an alert as the vehicle moves closer to another car or obstacle.

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

A Blind Spot Monitor uses rear-mounted radars to detect vehicles in adjacent lanes, or objects behind the RX when reversing. The same radars provide a Rear Cross Traffic Alert function, which warns the driver of traffic or people approaching from either side when reversing out of or into a parking space. It works in conjunction with a Blind Spot Monitor, using the same rear-mounted radar.

Parking Support Brake

The new RX adopts a Parking Support Brake system for safer parking and low-speed manoeuvres. If the system detects a risk of the vehicle making contact with a static object in front or behind, or with another vehicle approaching from either side at the rear, it will automatically apply drive and brake control to help avoid a collision and reduce damage.

The system includes the functions of the Intelligent Clearance Sonar and the Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake, enhancing visibility and making operation easier for the driver.

MULTIMEDIA AND AUDIO SYSTEMS

Lexus multimedia systems

For easier operation of the 12.3-inch Lexus multimedia system, the Remote Touch Interface has been changed to a touchpad. This responds to gesture controls – swipe, pinch, flick – like those used on tablets and smartphones.

At the same time, the display itself has a new touchscreen function, as an alternative to using the touchpad. To make operation easier when using touch controls, the screen has been moved forward so that it sits closer to the driver and front passenger.

To further improve connectivity and on-board personal entertainment options, the two USB ports have been moved to the front of the centre console and two more have been located on the rear of the unit, within easy reach of rear-seat passengers.

The standard Lexus multimedia system features an eight-inch TFT display on the centre console, operated by the Remote Touch Interface. The screen can be set to display a single panel (full map), two-panel (half map, half information), or three-panel (half map, two info screens) view. Smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay^TM and Android Auto^TM

Lexus has made smartphone integration easier by providing connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the new RX. With Android Auto, drivers can seamlessly access and use their phone on the car multimedia display. With larger on-screen targets, a simplified interface, and easy-to-use voice actions through the Google Assistant, it’s designed to minimize distraction, so you can stay focused on the road. Once connected, guests will enjoy music from apps such as Spotify® and Pandora®, or send messages through commonly used apps like WhatsApp®. The interface also allows them to navigate with Google Maps™ or Waze. With the Google Assistant in Android Auto, drivers can use their voice to get things done quickly and easily for a seamless, smooth, and enjoyable driving experience.

For Apple CarPlay integration, guests can use their iPhone® through the car multimedia display. When their iPhone is connected, commands for driving directions, phone calls, and sending and receiving messages via Siri® are enabled. They can also gain access to favourite apps like Apple Music, Apple Maps, Podcasts and Audiobooks, as well as third party apps like Waze or Spotify.

Pioneer nine-speaker audio

The standard audio package for the new RX is a nine-speaker Pioneer system that includes DAB radio reception, single CD player and Bluetooth.

Pioneer 12-speaker audio

Pioneer’s 12-speaker system, featured as a standard on F SPORT and available as an option on all other models, comes with a single DVD player and benefits from Coherent Source Transducer (CST) technology that gives extremely realistic and high-quality sound reproduction in the mid to high range and adds boost to low tones. The speaker array includes 200mm subwoofers and new 180mm woofers in the front doors.

Mark Levinson Premium Surround System

The Mark Levinson Premium Surround System available for the RX was designed specifically to work within the interior architecture of the vehicle to ensure the best possible listening experience throughout the cabin. It comprises 15 speakers: front and centre Unity 9 cm tweeters, a front elliptical woofer, two rear 2.5 cm tweeters, two rear 17 cm full range speakers, two 9 cm satellite mid-range units and a 20 cm rear sub-woofer.

The Unity 9 cm speakers feature high and mid-range cones with a single magnetic circuit. Bringing the cones as close together as possible helps achieve a smooth connection between the mid and high ranges, similar to a full-range speaker. The design is also more compact than coaxial speakers.

The Mark Levinson system uses Clari-Fi technology to restore the quality of compressed digital music files, producing rich low tones and crisp mid-to-high tones that envelop the listener, whatever the sound source. Quantum Logic Surround analyses the vocal, instrumental and musical atmosphere qualities of the music being played and allocates them to the appropriate speakers to build an accurate acoustic stage. This creates audio playback that faithfully reproduces the sound intended by the performer and the recording engineers.

Lexus is an official partner to the fifth edition of the event, which takes place in the formal grounds of the historic Château de Chantilly in France, 50 km north of Paris. It is internationally renowned as a historic and elegant showcase for the finest classic, modern and concept cars, with competitions for the best exhibits, a parade of “The Most Beautiful Cars in the World” an auction and many other activities and entertainments designed to celebrate the “art de vivre à la Française” – the quintessence of the French way of life. The thousands of visitors to Chantilly will themselves be the judges of the winner of the Lexus UX Art Car competition. Four unique examples of Lexus’ new compact crossover will be on display, each serving as a three-dimensional canvas for artists to explore ideas and emotions evoked by the car and its design, inside and out. The contest is a further example of how Lexus has moved beyond the automotive world to become a luxury brand that explores new areas of lifestyle, design and creativity.

Lexus hosts will welcome guests, introduce the art cars and invite them to cast a vote for their favourite. The winner will be announced at the end of the afternoon by the celebrated French journalist and television presenter Denis Brogniart.

The artists whose work has been selected for the final are Ana Soler Baena and Antoñito and Manolín from Spain; the collective Leitmotiv from France; and René Turrek, from Germany. Full details of the artists and their artworks are provided below.

Lexus LC Convertible Concept

The Lexus LC Convertible Concept made its world debut at the 2019 Detroit Motor Show, presented as a study for a new open-top version of the LC flagship. The concept car has been designed on the theme of “ultimate beauty” in every detail, from the rake of the windscreen to the smooth contours of the rear deck. It will take part in the Concours d’Élégance at Chantilly.

European premiere of the new RX

Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille will host the European premiere of the new, revised Lexus RX luxury SUV. The updated model features enhancements to its exterior styling and changes to the suspension and braking systems to raise the quality of ride and handling and precision and responsiveness of the steering. The new RX is also the world’s first model to feature LED BladeScan technology for the headlights’ Adaptive High-beam System.

The new RX will be on display alongside the new ES sedan, the RC F Track Edition performance coupe and the famous and rare Lexus LFA supercar.

Lexus UX Art Car competition – featured artists and artworks

Bluz, by Ana Soler Baena

In Bluz, the invisible becomes visible; light takes shape and can be touched. The UX’s exterior surfaces are covered in vectors in the form of light sticks, positioned to show off the contours of the car’s design. The sticks have a fluorescent tip that is activated with a static black light. Blue lasers are incorporated in the black sections, creating the visual effect of an infinite wake from the car’s directional styling lines. The cabin is filled with warm light and crystal spheres that resemble transparent oxygen bubbles. The sense is that the artist’s work doesn’t intervene in the skin of the UX, but in its aura.

Ana Soler Baena’s work includes huge installations that invade the exhibition space: clouds of balls, chains of molecules, floating objects and flying implements, works in which the spectator becomes the protagonist.

Gyorin Kozane (Armour of Scales), by Antoñito and Manolín

Gyorin Kozane – Armour of Scales – is an organic mesh made of blue and red scales, representing the skin of a fish – a motif that is frequently found in Japanese art and culture. The mesh is a three-dimensional structure made from a bio-epoxy material, superimposed on the UX’s bodywork like a two-dimensional canvas. Its duality and contrasting qualities converge in the same spirit as the engawa architectural concept the UX’s designers applied to create a seamless connection between the exterior and interior of the vehicle.

Antoñito and Manolín – Trini Salamanca and Pablo Párraga – are self-taught artists who create experimental furniture objects using totemic, geometric shapes with apparent simplicity. Their seats, dressers and sculptures display a refined brutalism, while acknowledging the earth in their choice of colours and materials.

Leitmotiv UX Art Car, by Leitmotiv

Leitmotiv will work on-site at Chantilly to transform the UX into a sculptural art installation. Each artist will use a part of the car to express their personal skills and interpretation, giving the UX many different facets and multiple identities, from illustrative and dreamlike to abstract and spontaneous.

Leitmotiv is a collective of three French artists: Keim, Wozdat and Ygrek. All are graduates in applied arts, and exponents of urban painting. Their specialisms are complementary and combine to give their work visual energy.

The Way of the Samurai, by René Turrek

In The Way of the Samurai, René Turrek has spray-painted the passenger side of the UX with concise lines in different colours and thicknesses to symbolise the power and modern technologies of the Lexus brand. By using neon shades, he creates special effects that change when the car is viewed in daylight or under ultra-violet light. The driver’s side of the vehicle has lines that echo the curve of a samurai sword applied to a grey background that reacts to sunlight or a camera flash to turn a glowing silver-white.

Turrek is a German-born graffiti artist, designer and pioneer who has developed new paint techniques, finishing and special effects. This is his second Lexus art car, having previously turned an NX SUV into an artwork with the Lexus Forum Osnabrück in 2015.

2018 marked the 5^th consecutive year of sales growth for Lexus Europe. In only five years, Lexus sales have increased by 76% in Europe (including Eastern markets*) to reach 76,188 units in 2018 (+2% vs 2017).

Lexus’ flagship models, the LS and LC, achieved outstanding results in 2018. The new generation LS, launched in December 2017, saw sales increase by 552% in 2018 to reach 1,075 units, while sales of the luxury coupe LC climbed 17% to reach 689 units.

Lexus’ mid-size SUV, the NX, was again the brand’s best seller in Europe with 29,508 units (+6% vs. 2017), following the introduction of the renewed model in late 2017. The RX large SUV came second with 18,847 units (=), prolonging the success story of this model’s latest generation launched in 2015 and expanded with the new RX L seven-seater in 2018. Supported by a product refresh introduced in late 2017, the CT compact hatchback also achieved a strong performance in 2018, with a sales increase of 3% to reach 9,131 units.

With a record 45,675 self-charging hybrid vehicles sold in Europe in 2018, Lexus continues to lead the electrification trend in the premium market. Self-charging hybrids represent 95% of Lexus sales in Western and Central Europe.

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN

EXTERIOR DESIGN: ELEGANT AND MODERN

WITH EXPRESSIVE, ATHLETIC LINES

From its inception, the Lexus RX has proved popular with those needing the flexibility of a sport-utility vehicle combined with the driving comfort of a luxury sedan, all wrapped in an attractive elegant package. So when it came time to design the new model, the mission was to create an even bolder and more athletic body style than the previous model, while keeping its luxurious character intact, with improved ergonomics. The new RX’s mix of sharp new creases and curves continue to elaborate on the design language also seen in the exterior sheetmetal of other recently-launched models in the Lexus models (IS, NX, and RC in particular).

A powerful visual statement

The front view of the new RX is characterized by an emboldened version of the Lexus brand’s signature spindle grille featuring a chrome-plated border and triple L-shape-LED headlamps. Together with the new front fog light/LED cornering light clusters, the RX’s face exudes an elegant yet futuristic aura.

L-shaped LED headlights accompanied by 18 individual LEDs (upgrade) are available. Headlight designs feature a bold-looking slanted geometric shape. With the upgrade L-shaped LED headlight system, the 18 individual LEDs that surround the headlights not only act as turn signal indicators, but also illuminate sequentially from the inside section of the headlamp toward the outside when the driver activates the turn signal—a first for Lexus. Other available headlight-related technologies include Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), Automatic High Beam, Light Distribution Control and Electronic Swivel Control.

The “spindle” design theme of the front of the RX also defines its rear design, providing a high level of aesthetic balance and consistency to the vehicle’s overall character. The LED rear combination L-shaped taillights envelope the tailgate while wrapping forward around the rear fender sections, resulting in a powerful and wide stance that offers improved functionality: When illuminated, they are now visible over a wider section rearward of the vehicle. Of particular note are the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide a floating-roof effect never before seen on a Lexus product.

Other exterior new features of the RX are flush-fitting headlight washers, a new panoramic moon roof design, solid roof rails, redesigned door handles incorporating Smart Entry System and convenient door handle illumination. Also, three new exterior colours have been added: Graphite Black, Copper Brown and Deep Blue.

Reimagined dimensions in a bold, elegant package

Since owners of the current-generation RX cite the vehicle’s exterior dimensions as ideal for their everyday commuting needs, Lexus designers made it a priority to keep the body size relatively intact while improving packaging. The new RX features exactly the same height (1690 mm for petrol versions, 1685 for RX 450h) as the outgoing vehicle with a slight increase in overall width (up 10 mm to 1895 mm), while overall length has grown by 120 mm to 4890 mm. Wheelbase is increased by 50 mm to 2790 mm, resulting in improved legroom with equal cargo space. Of note, ground clearance is up 10 mm despite the similar height of the previous model.

Adding some muscular athleticism to the RX’s overall stance are the aggressively shaped tapered front and rear fender flares, while the diamond-shaped main body that flows from the spindle grille all the way through to the rear tailgate section imparts a high degree of sophistication. The sculpted beltline provides a three-dimensional effect as it makes its way down the sides of the vehicle from just above the rear taillights, passing through the side door/window section and gently bisecting the headlights and spindle grille, to create a sense of dynamic motion for the RX even when standing still.

Accompanying the new-look exterior design are a number of re-proportioned changes to the exterior structure, including the enlargement of the tyre and wheel diameters, a longer wheelbase and a slightly lowered bottom edge of the front bumper. Additionally, the front pillars (A-pillars) have been pushed back to further accentuate the curvature of the windshield, while the rear pillars (C-pillars) are now more acutely angled while ensuring more interior space. These exterior design features give the new RX a wider, more athletic and expressive stance that contributes to the model’s more contemporary appearance.

Improved aerodynamics: Cheating the wind

A number of aerodynamic elements have been incorporated into the new RX’s outer skin. These aerodynamic enhancements not only improve the vehicle’s drag coefficient (now at 0.33) but also ensure a greater degree of driving stability and low cabin noise.

Among these enhancements are:

• A front under spoiler has been added that directs airflow to the underbody, ensuring driving stability as well as reducing aerodynamic drag.

• New fin-shaped corner sections in the front fascia beneath the headlights improve airflow along the sides of the vehicle.

• The front pillars (A-pillars) have been redesigned to reduce wind noise during high-speed driving.

• New aero stabilizing fins have been added to the taillight’s housing. They wrap into the rear fenders for additional aerodynamic stability at the rear of the vehicle.

• A new rear spoiler design along the roof/tailgate glass section helps reduce lift and adds rear downforce.

• On the hybrid model, the rear diffuser beneath the rear bumper helps to smoothly draw airflow from beneath the vehicle for reduced aerodynamic drag and additional driving stability.

A wide selection of sporty wheels provides added flair

A choice of four different stylish aluminum wheel packages are now available with the RX, including an 18-in. seven-spoke wheel (standard model) and three distinct 20-in. wheel sets.

Choices include:

• A pair of ten-spoke wheels with a medium gray colour with a machined finish.

• Sporty multi-spoke design that is standard equipment on the RX F SPORT.

• And a sleek-looking thick five-spoke rendition that is available with selectable colour trim (choices include black, copper brown, sonic titanium or sonic white)- a Lexus first.

INTERIOR: LUXURIOUS YET PRACTICAL WHILE OFFERING SPACIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS

Like the exterior, the interior of the new RX reflects an impeccable balance of functionality and luxury. The occupants are surrounded by refined materials inside the cabin exuding a heightened sense of quality in their construction and craftsmanship. The newly reconfigured and redesigned interior balances a sense of spaciousness with intimacy that proves ideal for driver and passenger comfort alike, whether they’re seated in the first or second row.

A rich comfortable cabin

Having been a signature design trait for Lexus since the very beginning, the seats in the new RX are based on an ergonomic design that puts equal emphasis on comfort and accessibility, elegance and richly appointed surfaces. Rounded seat cushions for all the RX occupants not only provide superb comfort, but excellent support. All seating surfaces have been constructed utilizing a vertical stitch pattern for its handsome look and excellent durability. In another stylish touch, the driver and front passenger seat backs feature an aesthetically pleasing quilting that matches the attractive pattern featured on the interior door panel trim.

Two new colours have been added for the leather surfaces that include the seats and door panels - Nobel Brown and Rich Cream- giving the interior a classy aura.

The driver is treated to a completely redesigned instrument panel section that has been shaped with a strong horizontal axis - a fundamental element of the Lexus interior - and the lowered dashboard position adds to the RX’s interior’s wide open and spacious feel. Additionally, with the dashboard/instrument panel’s stepped cross-sections, the highly stylized centre console looks like a sleek and elegant piece of contemporary furniture.

More space all around

For the first row of seats, the seating position has been lowered (reduced by 19 mm), allowing for excellent head clearance for both the driver and the front passenger. On the driver’s side, the position of the steering wheel has been repositioned with the angle of the steering column reduced by two degrees while the steering wheel has been positioned closer to the driver. This design change allows for a comfortable yet more sport-oriented driving position - an attribute that will surely be greatly appreciated by the enthusiast driver.

With an interior space optimized for five passengers, the new RX’s lowered rear floor section helps provide seating position comparable to that of the rear-seat passengers in the flagship Lexus LS sedan. Rear-seat occupants will find that they still have plenty of head room, as they did in the previous-generation model. What’s more, thanks to the new RX’s lengthened wheelbase, rear-seat legroom has grown with no sacrifice to luggage space.

Comparable in size to the outgoing RX, the new model features ample rear cargo space with room enough to fit hefty items including up to four large suitcases or multiple golf bags. Beneath the rear cargo area floor is a spare tyre with jack and tool storage or a punctured tyre repair kit and jack and tool storage.

New for this model year is the smart power tailgate, a Lexus first, which allows users to open the rear hatch by placing a hand near the Lexus badge. This feature can especially be helpful when the user has both hands full because the system detects an elbow and even a gloved hand when placed over the badge.

A highly functional and convenient environment

Lexus designers and engineers have given a great deal of consideration to the layout of the redesigned centre console of the RX, which has led to improvements in the usability of switchgear and the accessibility of cup holders and storage areas.

CENTRE CONSOLE:

On the centre console, both the audio and climate control sections have been clearly separated for ease of use. What’s more, the audio system features exquisitely machined aluminum dial knobs that improve usability and tactile feel while looking extremely stylish.

New convenience features incorporated into the centre console section include a Micro SD card slot for enhanced functionality of external media; a convenient side console pocket accessible from the passenger seat that is capable of holding tablets and other small computer devices; an available wireless charger in the storage section at the base of the centre console that enables power cable-free charging of portable devices; and the world’s first cup holder with a vertical sliding height adjustment mechanism that can be adjusted with the push of a button to accept tall plastic bottles, short to-go coffee cups, aluminum soda cans, etc.

Even the analogue clock located near the top of the centre console reflects the RX’s stylish redesigned interior while offering excellent functionality. Looking like a timepiece created by a high-end watchmaker, the design of the clock face has been improved to offer better visibility for the driver and the passengers.

HEAD- UP DISPLAY (HUD) AND 12.3” MONITOR:

A feature incorporated into the design of the new-look instrument panel is a Head-Up Display (HUD) system, the large display screen placed on the windshield with the system’s operational controls conveniently positioned between the two front seats to allow for equal access by the driver or the front passenger. Based upon the concept of Lexus’s Human Machine Interface (HMI), the system allows the driver to concentrate on the road ahead with minimal distraction from the easy-to-use and intuitive control interface. Also, a full 12.3 inches in width dashboard mounted monitor (8-in. display as alternative) offers outstanding visibility and usability, whether scrolling through menu screens, utilizing maps or accessing the vehicle’s multimedia systems.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER:

Speaking of excellent functionality, the redesigned instrument cluster offers the driver instantaneous information with a quick glance from its large and easy-to-read gauge faces. The same can be said of the handy multi-information display positioned between the tachometer (an energy display gauge in hybrid-powered RX models) and the speedometer. What’s more, the ambient illumination of the multi-information display changes to invoke a different mood for each mode from the Driver Mode Select system - when operating within the ECO or NORMAL driving modes, the illumination appears predominantly blue to let the driver know that they are driving in more economical settings while in SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes, the light glows red.

IMPROVED VISIBILITY:

An important new design feature is an expanded front field of view through the windshield and out over the hood. This not only allows for increased safety with improved forward visibility when driving, but provides the driver with a more precise estimation of vehicle width, which can be especially handy when parking the vehicle or manoeuvring through tight spaces. Another design change that further improves outward vision is the placement of the side view mirrors, which have been moved slightly aft from their previous position near the A-pillars to help reduce the blind spot between the pillar and the outside mirror. Furthermore, the A-pillars are thinner to further enhance forward vision and providing a cleaner, more minimalist appearance to both the interior and exterior design.

Like the A-pillars at the front of the vehicle, the rear pillars (C-pillars) are also narrower, resulting in better rearward visibility as well as a reduction in the rear three-quarter blind spot. To further aid rearward visibility, the rear seat belt openings have been repositioned and the rear door trim has been given a concave cross-section to be less intrusive to the driver when looking rearward.

RX F SPORT

The RX F SPORT elevates the sporty image of the RX to an entirely new level. F SPORT models include a number of special visual and performance features that set them apart from other versions. The first thing the driver will notice is the exclusive instrumentation cluster that consists of an 8-in. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) characterized by a large, easy-to-read circular gauge that artistically combines a tachometer and a digital speed indicator.

The interior of the RX F SPORT has been styled to match the vehicle’s sporty disposition. You’ll find highly supportive quilted seats that are exclusive to the F SPORT, as is an exclusive interior colour choice, Dark Rose. The unique perforated leather-wrapped shift lever and three-spoke sport steering wheel with F SPORT badge, and aluminum interior trim accents, drilled non-slip lightweight aluminum accelerator and brake pedals and foot rest add extra flair to this exciting model’s invigorating character.

The exterior features an exclusive black-out mesh grille, lower spoiler section and satin-finish chrome-plated lower protector with black side mirrors to match the grille. The vehicle’s new front fascia design accentuates a low centre of gravity, as does the new satin-finish chrome plated lower bumper section at the rear of the vehicle. Exclusive multi-spoke 20-in. aluminum alloy wheels shod with 235/55 tyres and subtle but distinctive F SPORT badging round out its expressive exterior. A total of eight exterior colours are available, including an F SPORT exclusive, White Nova.

to an 8-speed automatic transmission, available in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Caucasus and Balkans.

3.5-LITER DIRECT-INJECTED V-6 HYBRID ENGINE

A paragon of efficiency with plentiful power when needed, the completely reengineered 3.5-liter direct-injected V-6 hybrid engine is an evolution of the base 6-cylinder powertrain, now producing 193 kW/262 DIN hp at 6000 rpm with 335 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm. The total output of the hybrid powertrain (engine and electric motor combined) amounts at 230 kW/313 DIN hp.

The new Lexus full hybrid returns average fuel consumption from 5.2l/100 km, and class-leading CO₂ emissions starting at 120g/km.

In a Lexus first for a hybrid vehicle, the all-new RX is available with an optimally-tuned sound generator system that creates a powerful and distinctive performance-oriented intake sound by using air intake pulsations to raise the sound pressure level with three distinct resonance frequencies. The engine also features newly-shaped intake ports and combustion chambers that generate a high degree of tumble inside the cylinders and improve combustion.The hybrid-powered powertrain in the all-new Lexus RX is the latest, most advanced iteration of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system. Its key components and control systems have been improved and reengineered to deliver class-leading fuel economy, minimal emissions and excellent on-road.

The transmission includes a hybrid front transaxle with new features including a transmission oil cooler (water cooled) for improved motor cooling, and a pre-loaded differential for performance and straight line stability. The rear transaxle (for models equipped with AWD), which combines an electric motor with a reduction drive, features a new three-shaft configuration and aluminum case and cover to reduce weight. Thanks to these upgrades, the Lexus Hybrid Drive system achieves class-leading driving performance, quietness and fuel economy.

Among other updates to the system are a design evolution of the Power Control Unit (PCU) and HV Engine Control Unit (ECU) that delivers better energy efficiency; improved driver-friendly operation and more refined performance; implementation of a lighter, more efficient hybrid system coolant electric water pump; the addition of a new transmission oil cooler (water cooled) to the transaxle for improved driving performance, and packaging changes to the hybrid battery that result in a more compact design with improved space efficiency. Also, the control functions of the E-Four rear drive electric motor (AWD models) have been improved for better response when accelerating through the turns.

2.0-LITER TURBOCHARGED INLINE 4-CYLINDER ENGINE

The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 is the newest addition to the RX’s stable of excellent powerplants, delivering superior fuel economy and driving performance, characterized by crisp throttle response and instantaneous torque throughout the rev range.

The engine produces 175 kW (238 DIN hp) at 4800-5600 rpm with 350 Nm of torque from 1650-4000 rpm. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7.8L/100km (2WD) or 7.9L/100km (AWD).

It comes mated to a 6-speed super Electronically Controlled Transaxle (6 ECT) automatic transmission, a lightweight and compact unit whose efficiency and performance have been enhanced through a number of design features including a reduced-friction clutch and thrust bearings, an electric oil pump and the implementation of a torque converter specifically engineered for use with this engine.

Among the special features of the RX’s new turbocharged powerplant are Lexus’ proprietary ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) and D-4ST (Direct injection 4-stroke petrol engine Superior version with Turbo), which optimize fuel efficiency and power production. With ESTEC, thermal efficiency within the engine is improved through enhanced combustion in each cylinder, resulting in better fuel economy. D-4ST further enhances combustion via a high tumble ratio that’s achieved by improving the cylinder head ports as well as the shape of the top of the piston. The turbocharger, a twin-scroll type with an air-to-liquid intercooler mounted directly to the engine, delivers optimal torque from low to high rpm ranges, and thanks to new manufacturing technologies and materials, it’s lighter and more compact than conventional versions. Also, reduced friction in the bearing mechanism delivers better overall performance, reduced NVH and cleaner emissions, with increased component strength and durability.

Other notable elements that enhance this engine’s efficiency include a high compression ratio of 10.0:1, balance shaft with an optimized balance ratio and the adoption of resin gears for the balance shaft (reduced NVH), an improved lightweight roller/rocker valvetrain, a piston cooling oil jet control system, as well as Variable Valve Timing with intelligence Wide for the intake (VVT-iW) and Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) on the exhaust sides of the engine. Of particular note, the continuously variable valve timing system has been designed to operate using the Atkinson cycle - a design element often featured in hybrid-vehicle powertrains - to deliver exceptional fuel efficiency.

3.5-LITER DIRECT-INJECTED V-6 PETROL ENGINE

The 3.5-liter direct-injected petrol-powered V-6 engine brings superior levels of performance, fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with smooth and highly-refined operating characteristics in normal everyday operation. Power is rated at 221 kW/300 DIN hp at 6300 rpm with 370 Nm of torque at 4700 rpm.

To enhance breathing and fuel efficiency, Lexus engineers rely on an all-new cylinder head design with reshaped intake ports and combustion chambers—which increase the static compression ratio to 11.8:1 –for added efficiency in the engine’s combustion process. Also, a new cylinder bore machining method and new resin coating has resulted in reduced friction between the piston and the bore to enhance the engine’s efficiency.

This redesigned V-6 powerplant features the D-4S fuel injection system that enables high fuel pressure to be injected directly to the cylinders. Both the port-injection and direct-injection injectors optimize the ratio of the fuel to ensure optimum combustion at all times, which results in enhanced fuel economy. To reduce engine knock, the cooling within the cylinder block and cylinder head has been enhanced.

To maximize torque throughout the rev range, Variable Valve Timing with intelligence Wide (VVT-iW) has been included on the intake side, while the exhaust side features VVT-i. The inclusion of VVT-iW has enabled the adoption of the Atkinson cycle to further benefit fuel economy, without sacrificing engine start-up in extremely cold conditions and during Wide Open Throttle (WOT) driving.

The V-6 possesses a number of new technologies that result in the highest-performing RX engine ever. Among them are:

• An increase in flow velocity, which has been realized by reducing the intake port diameter of the cylinder head, thus improving performance in the high rev ranges and producing a steep and continuous acceleration curve.

• The fitment of a lightweight roller/rocker system, along with a reduced-friction chain and lighter internal parts that result in higher engine speeds and reduction of friction losses in the valvetrain.

• An Exhaust Gas Recirculation System (EGR) that reintroduces cool exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber, keeping the engine operating at optimal temperatures.

• A variable length intake surge tank that prevents torque reduction in the mid-speed range.

• A new oil pump that optimizes the amount of lubricating oil sent to each part.

The V-6’s excellent power is delivered through a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, whose close gear ratios have been tuned to provide excellent punch off the line and robust passing power while maintaining excellent fuel economy. A lower 1st gear (a 19-percent lower ratio than 2^nd gear) provides the “punch” when you need to get away from a standstill in a hurry, while a higher 8^th gear (a 15-percent higher ratio than 7^th gear) ensures that fuel consumption is minimal at cruising speed.

Other advanced technologies that enhance this unit’s operation are Linear Driveforce Management (maximizes engine torque for each gear), Downshift Control (matches the driver’s accelerator pedal input - smooth or rapid - with the downshifting response accordingly) and a Multi-mode function that allows for rapid manual-like up and downshifts via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

AWD SYSTEMS

For petrol AWD models, Dynamic Torque Control AWD has been adopted, which processes information from a number of sensors, including G. wheel-speed sensors and steering angle sensors, and instantaneously route engine power to the rear wheels to maximize tractability on varying surfaces and road conditions. The torque distribution ranges from 100:0 (pure front-wheel drive) to 50:50 via an electronically-controlled coupling, ensuring the effectiveness of a full-time AWD system, while delivering superior fuel economy.

The sophisticated Lexus proactive AWD system is included in all RXs powered by the 3.5-liter direct-injected gasoline-powered V-6 hybrid engine. This system also allows for reduced energy and fuel consumption by limiting the use of the all-wheel drive only when necessary and allowing the rear motor to act as a generator to charge the battery when the vehicle is in regenerative brake mode.

An added feature on the new RX is that the torque distribution levels at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as to each individual wheel, are displayed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) when the system is in operation a Lexus first on RX vehicles.

CHASSIS AND DRIVING DYNAMICS

To further improve driving performance as well as feedback to the driver, a number of updates and improvements have been made throughout the structurally sound and highly-refined platform of the all-new Lexus RX.

STEERING

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) has been further optimized to offer an even more communicative road feel to the driver. The intermediate shaft and instrument panel reinforcement rigidity have been enhanced. Controllability, smoothness and responsiveness have been improved thanks to further refinements to the system, including one that slows the steering wheel as it returns to centre. Also, steering angle is easier for the driver to maintain when turning deep into a corner.

The steering has been further optimized for the driver with an extended tilt/telescopic positioning range, along with a slight reduction in the angle of the steering column (down two degrees) for a sportier driving position.

SUSPENSION/BRAKES

The updated suspension system of the RX, which consists of MacPherson struts in front and a trailing arm/double-wishbone setup at the rear, provides added stability through corners and better overall handling character than its predecessor, thanks to extra refinements made with a number of key components.

A larger front stabilizer bar significantly improves roll rigidity, thus making the turning response of the RX crisper than before, but because the new stabilizer bar allows for a reduction in coil spring rates, the overall ride quality has been maintained, if not improved. Also, new redesigned hub bearings, stabilizer bushings and other improvements provide added stability and feel to the front of the vehicle. To match the front end’s newfound sturdiness, changes were made to the rear suspension as well; these include an enhanced spring rate and increased bushing rigidity.

RX models are fitted with an enhanced brake system that offers exceptional stopping power and fade resistance. An Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is included as part of the standard equipment package.

ADAPTIVE VARIABLE SUSPENSION (AVS)

The available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system helps the RX to handle like a sports sedan, as well as exhibiting unparalleled ride comfort and stability, by controlling the damping force of the shock absorbers at each individual wheel in response to road surface conditions and driver inputs. For example, on a rough road, the system instantly switches to a more compliant setting to maintain ride comfort. Alternately, when cornering, the damping force firms to help reduce body roll for more performance-oriented, flat cornering.

ACTIVE STABILIZER SUSPENSION

The Active Stabilizer Suspension suppresses body roll according to unevenness of the road surface, performing the adjustments not only during turning, but also when traveling straight. This innovative active anti-roll system is the first of its kind in the world.

Conventional stabilizers are still vulnerable to unpredictable road conditions such as large potholes and sudden bumps. To help maintaining the effectiveness of the stabilising system at any time, the RX’s system features a new ‘roll skyhook control’. This very responsive electronic system calculates the virtual damping force that might occur, and responds by simultaneously creating a counter force to the stabilizer, providing the sensation of the vehicle stabilized in mid-air or ‘hooked’ in the sky.

DRIVE MODES

The available Drive Mode Select system allows the driver to choose between distinct drive settings (depending upon vehicle model and equipment). These settings regulate the damping force of the suspension system, adjust engine output, re-map the throttle and modify other key parameters of the engine and chassis.

• “ECO” mode moderates engine power output, throttle response and the climate control system for increased fuel efficiency.

• “NORMAL” provides an even balance between engine performance and fuel economy (both “ECO” and “NORMAL” utilize a suspension setting that prioritizes comfort).

• In “SPORT,” the driver is treated to more performance through enhanced throttle response and improved acceleration while sharpening the feel of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

For vehicles equipped with the Adaptive Variable Suspension system, this SPORT mode is replaced by the SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes:

• The “SPORT S” setting even a higher level of performance with aggressive throttle mapping, quicker powertrain response. (In hybrid-powered RX models with AVS, this is accomplished when the hybrid system allows for enhanced accelerator response and feeling of more powerful acceleration.)

• Available on F SPORT and Luxury grades, the all-out “SPORT S+” setting combines the powertrain enhancements of the “SPORT S” mode while sharpening the feel of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system and a stiffer suspension for flatter cornering.

• Offered for the first time by Lexus, the “CUSTOMIZE” mode enables the user to combine the modes of the engine, hybrid system, chassis, and air conditioning functions, according to his preferences.

The hybrid RX also adds an “EV DRIVE” setting that allows the vehicle to be driven purely in electric vehicle (EV) mode, completely shutting down the petrol-powered engine.

RIGID BODY STRUCTURE

A number of cutting-edge technologies have been applied to the RX’s platform to optimize structural integrity as well as overall rigidity. These include increasing panel joint strength through the use of high-tech body adhesives and laser screw welding; liberal use of high-tensile strength steel throughout the vehicle including key areas such as the underbody cross members and front (A-pillar) and middle (B-pillar) sections; the implementation of a new process called “annular frame construction” for strengthened frame sections within the vehicle around the front and rear doors; and redesigned body frame sections and additional spot welds around the rear portion of the vehicle for improved strength and handling stability.

In addition to contributing to better handling and a quieter cabin, these design updates have the added benefit of improving occupant safety thanks to increased structural rigidity throughout the platform.

QUIET CABIN WITH GREATLY REDUCED LEVELS

OF NOISE AND VIBRATION

The high-rigidity chassis/body structure of the all-new Lexus RX features a number of design/engineering updates that improve upon the already exceptionally quiet cabin of the previous RX. Among the changes are:

Front section of the vehicle:

• A reduction in wind noise near the front pillar (A-pillar) by redirecting the air flow around the side mirrors.

• A urethane shielding plate placed within the inner fender area that reduces engine noise from penetrating into the cabin.

• New front wheel housing material for reduced noise from the road and deflected debris.

• A thicker hood insulator offering better sound insulation.

• An increase in the surface area of the cowl insulator.

• Enlarge the apron silencer by 10 to 20% to reduce engine noise from entering the passenger compartment.

• Reduce openings in the sound insulating material in the cowl area for better sound absorption and insulation.

Middle section of the vehicle:

• Acoustic glass, three-lip glass run in the rail section and other improvements to the front and rear doors for better sound insulation and reduced noise and vibration.

• More optimally placed and/or positioned foam, sponge and vibration damping materials around the front and rear door section rocker panels, middle pillar (B-pillar) and roof rails sections.

• Reconfigured weather stripping around the front and rear doors, along with full-edge double door seals.

• Optimal placement of sound absorbing and insulating materials throughout the doors, roof and floor sections.

• Highly rigid sound damping coatings throughout the vehicle’s floor pan for improved sound insulation with reduced weight.

• Placement of sound absorbing materials beneath the dashboard, glovebox and centre console sections.

Rear section of the vehicle:

• A completely redesigned and repositioned rear body frame within the rear pillar (C-pillar) and body sections surrounding the rear hatchback door area that greatly suppress lateral vibrations from within the rear wheel housings.

• Additional foam placed within the rear pillar (C-pillar) area for reduced wind noise.

IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

In addition to its exceptional quality and performance, the platform of the RX has been engineered to proactively contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability, thanks to lead- and hexavalent chromium-free engine components (elimination of harmful materials) and the utilization of easily recyclable Super Olefin Polymer plastics throughout the bodywork.

RX F SPORT

All RX F SPORT models boast excellent handling, thanks in part to the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system - which controls the damping force of the shock absorbers at each individual wheel in response to road surface conditions and driver inputs - and the Active Stabilizer System that suppresses body roll according to the unevenness of the road surface. Also, the sound generator enhances the F SPORT driving experience, using air intake pulsations to tune the sound of the engine to produce frequencies that are perceived to be pleasant to the ear during acceleration in the mid- to high-rpm range.

SAFETY & DRIVER ASSIST

ACTIVE SAFETY: LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

Introduced globally as either standard or optional equipment, Lexus Safety System + integrates several of Lexus’ existing active safety technologies.

Lexus Safety System + is the most advanced and comprehensive set of active safety set of its kind available on any luxury crossover vehicle within its segment. The ultimate goal of the Lexus Safety System + is to gradually progress towards eliminating casualties from automobile accidents.

Dynamic radar cruise control system

The sophisticated dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC) system is an available supplemental safety/convenience feature in addition to the standard control system. It makes use of a millimetre-wave radar sensor, camera sensor, yaw rate sensor and steering sensor to provide vehicle-to-vehicle distance control for an additional margin of safety.

Pre-Crash Safety System

Utilizing both a monocular camera and millimetre wave radar, the available Lexus Pre-Crash Safety System uses sensors to detect other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle. When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is high, a warning operates to urge the driver to take evasive action, and the potential brake pressure is increased to help the driver avoiding the collision. If the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a vehicle or a pedestrian is high, the brakes are automatically applied to help avoiding the collision or help reduce the impact to the vehicle occupants and the vehicle in the collision.

Pre-Crash Brake Assist

If sensors detect vehicles or pedestrians and the system determines that there is a possibility of a collision, the available Pre-Crash Brake Assist system increases the brake force when the driver depresses the brake pedal. The system will add an additional amount of brake pressure in stages according to the level of possible collision.

An additional layer of protection is provided within the system through Auto Brake. If an obstruction is detected by the sensors and the system judges that there is a possibility of collision, pre-brake warning illuminates the brake lights to notify the following vehicle that the driver is decelerating. If the probability of collision increases, the pre-crash brake is activated, helping to avoid the collision. If the collision is avoided and the vehicle has stopped, the brake force is maintained for a maximum of two seconds until the driver operates the accelerator or brake pedal.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

The available Lane Departure Alert (LDA) system, using a camera mounted to the windshield, recognizes when the vehicle may deviate from within its current traffic lane. It then warns the driver through a visual warning on the Multi-Information Display (MID) by vibrating the steering wheel or sounding an audible alert in order to inform the driver of a potential lane departure. What’s more, when the system judges that the vehicle may deviate from its current lane, the Steering Control system will also apply force to the steering wheel to correct the vehicle’s path in addition to the LDA system’s audio/visual warning.

A convenient feature is that the alerting method (audible alert or steering wheel vibration) and sensitivity of the warning can be changed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) screen by using the “DISP” button located on the steering wheel. Likewise, the driver may activate or deactivate the Steering Control functionality should they choose to do so.

Advanced Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA) *

The advanced Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA) system adds all of the functionality of the Lane Departure Alert system while including additional functionality and aid to the driver. For example, when the vehicle’s dynamic radar cruise control is on and other operating conditions are met, the advanced Lane-Keeping Assist system will automatically provide steering inputs to maintain proper placement within the vehicle’s current driving lane.

In a first for Lexus, the advanced Lane-Keeping Assist system, working in tandem with the dynamic radar cruise control, can now function while the vehicle is being operated at very low speeds. Like the Lane Departure Alert system, the driver has complete control over the functionality of the advanced Lane-Keeping Assist system through the use of the “DISP” button located on the steering wheel.

Automatic High Beam (AHB) / Adaptive High-Beam System (AHS)

The AHB system detects oncoming headlights, taillights of leading vehicles and ambient light such as street lights and switches automatically between low and high beam.

AHS, an optional upgrade for the AHB, automatically optimizes the headlamp light distribution so that the high beams don’t directly illuminate preceding or oncoming vehicles.

Road Sign Assist

With a camera placed at the front of the vehicle, the remarkably sophisticated Road Sign Assist system recognizes traffic signs and provides information to the driver in the Multi-Information Display (MID). Signs recognized by the system include speed limit, no entry, no overtaking and road condition signs (rain, ice, wet, etc.).

OTHER ACTIVE SAFETY-ENHANCING FEATURES:

Sway Warning

The Sway Warning function incorporated into the LDA/LKA monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane and the driver’s steering inputs to detect vehicle sway. If the system detects vehicle sway, caused by driver distraction, inattentiveness or drowsiness, it will sound an audible alert and display a visual warning on the Multi-Information Display (MID). Sway Warning activation, deactivation and sensitivity can be manually adjusted by the driver.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

Working in concert with the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), the Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system alerts the driver to objects approaching at the rear of the vehicle with an audible alert as well as flashing indicators on the vehicle’s external side mirrors.

Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)

Employing quasi-millimetre wave radar installed on the back of the vehicle, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system can detect a vehicle present in adjacent lanes and can also detect an object at the rear of the vehicle while it is backing up.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) control

When sensors detect vehicles or pedestrians and the system determines that there is a high likelihood of a collision, the Adaptive Variable Suspension Control system instantaneously adjusts shock absorber damping within the suspension to enhance the vehicle’s responsiveness as an additional driver aid (available on vehicles equipped with AVS).

Panoramic View Monitor

Providing a bird’s-eye view of the area encompassing the vehicle, the Panoramic View Monitor allows the driver to survey the RX’s surroundings in tight spaces, such as a crowded parking lot, by utilizing cameras mounted to the front, sides and rear of the RX.

Intuitive Parking Assist/Lexus Parking Assist-sensor

Integrated seamlessly into the front and rear bumpers of the all-new Lexus RX, the available Intuitive Parking Assist/Lexus Parking Assist-sensor system ensures obstacle detection in close proximity to the vehicle, thanks to four sensors at the front and four sensors in the rear. The system sounds an audible alert to the driver as the vehicle moves closer to the obstacle.

Parking Assist Monitor

The Parking Assist Monitor aids the driver with both a Perpendicular Parking Mode as well as a Parallel Parking Mode that displays guidelines for a predicted course to steer the vehicle; the Parallel Parking Mode offers additional driver’s assistance through an audio warning.

PASSIVE SAFETY

A plethora of vital safety features and technologies are included for all RX models, including SRS airbags consisting of dual-stage and dual-chamber driver’s and front passenger’s airbag, driver’s knee airbag, front side airbags, rear side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers; Tyre Pressure Warning System with available tyre inflation display function; re- active front headrests; vehicle theft-deterrent and engine immobilizer system. Braking and Traction Control systems that include four-wheel ventilated power-assisted disc brakes, a four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRAC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill-start Assist Control are also included, as is Smart Stop Technology that automatically reduces engine power when the brake pedal is applied, even if the accelerator pedal is pressed to the floor.

Enhanced body structure

The body structure of the RX offers increased occupant protection thanks to a number of innovative design features that include improved front collision performance due to new frame components and a high-strength body structure that further suppresses cabin deformation; better side collision performance thanks to improved energy absorption and dispersion; a large bumper reinforcement at the rear of the vehicle that disperses energy in the event of a collision towards the left and right rear side members; and additional reinforcements within the roof section for better impact resistance and suppression of cabin deformation. Pedestrian protection is improved in the event of a collision through a new body structure design at the front of the vehicle that mitigates head and leg injury to the pedestrian through better energy absorption.

AUDIO/MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS

PIONEER 9-SPEAKER SYSTEM

The standard audio system includes HD Radio, Bluetooth audio and nine speakers, with frequently-used switches placed closest to the driver. Along with a pair of two-tone alumite silver aluminum knobs, the audio system panel is now finished in a luxurious dark smoked colour, its opacity adjusted for an upscale blacked-out aesthetic. An AUX mini jack and two USB ports are located inside the console box for easy access. The voice recognition microphone has been relocated from the overhead console to the ceiling above the driver seat for improved voice-recognition performance.

PIONEER 12-SPEAKER SYSTEM

The available 12-speaker Pioneer audio system features Coherent Source Transducer (CST) technology that offers extremely realistic and high quality sound reproduction in the mid-to-high range as well as boosting low tones. The crisp, clear sound is broadcast throughout the cabin through speakers along the sides of the instrument panel through 20-cm subwoofers and newly-developed 18-cm woofers in the front doors.

MARK LEVINSON (ML) PREMIUM SURROUND SYSTEM
