Lexus has commissioned a collective of pan-European digital artists to create unique visions of everyday city life using immersive design and dynamic imagery to help celebrate the launch of the LBX compact urban crossover.

Each creative has produced visuals and animations drawing on images and film from the LBX’s ‘Everyday Extraordinary’ campaign which open up new perspectives on familiar city environments, using impactful treatments to transform urban architecture and streetscapes. It is the latest original project in a long association between Lexus and the world of contemporary art and design that supports the company’s commitment to innovation and creative thinking.

The new works are being revealed today by the artists on their social channels and will be used by Lexus across a variety of platforms and marketing initiatives designed to capture the attention and appeal to a younger demographic. Each artist will also contribute a behind the scenes film, giving a personal insight into their ideas and how they brought them to life in their artworks. This aligns with the LBX’s reach to new audiences, in particular younger customers, who value premium quality, but with a more casual feel.

Filip Belmans, Lexus Europe Head of Communications and Customer Experience, said: “It has been amazing to see our LBX philosophy interpreted through diverse digital artistry that reimagines everyday city living. The artists

The three artists, chosen for their original techniques, artistic vision and strong social media presence are Andreas Wannerstedt (Sweden); Ricardo Orts, known as ‘Ulises’ (Spain); and Charlotte Talyor (UK).

Wannerstedt is an art director and 3D artist who is renowned for his sculptures and mesmerising looping animations. He said: “The LBX brings a fresh and extraordinary approach to everyday life. I was inspired by this and the car’s sharp design and choice of vibrant colours to work with Lexus and create an artwork that expresses the new perspective on city life.” 

Ulises is another 3D artist, also experienced in video and animation. His work with Berlin’s Ulises Studio, evokes premium quality and treads a perfect line between the real and surreal. In his animation, the LBX is driven through a typical monochromatic city which gradually transforms into a colourful array of urban architecture.

Charlotte Taylor is a digital artist, founder of the self-named Studio Charlotte Taylor and Maison du Sable. She specialises in architecture, interior design, and art direction.

The ‘Everyday Extraordinary’ campaign

The LBX makes the ‘Everyday Extraordinary’ by elevating the daily driving experience and turning it into something luxurious and engaging. The marketing campaign to launch the new model previously captured this concept in a series of four pop-events hosted in Milan, London, Madrid and Paris in which familiar everyday situations – a car wash, a multi-storey car park, a street art gallery and a bakery – were transformed into immersive luxury experiences, showcasing the LBX.

With deliveries of the all-new LBX under way, customers are experiencing first-hand the high level of Lexus luxury in the brand’s most compact model yet.

There’s also greater choice than ever before, in line with Lexus’ commitment to making luxury personal. Moving away from the traditional model grade structure, there is a focus on style and sensory appeal with a choice of Atmospheres: Elegant, Relax, Emotion and Cool. Each evokes a different character – refined, dynamic, sporty – through colour options and look and feel of upholsteries and trims. In tune with today’s environmental priorities, you can specify a vegan-friendly leather-free interior as an alternative to tactile Ultrasuede or exclusive L-aniline leather, a material that until now has been exclusive to Lexus flagship LS limousine.

The LBX may be compact in size, but this in no way diminishes the comfort and sense of confidence and control the driver feels behind the wheel – the defining elements of the Lexus Driving Signature that’s prioritised in every new Lexus. The driver enjoys both a commanding view, characteristic of an SUV, with a low-set instrument panel and wide windscreen. At the same time, the seating position feels more like a sedan, with a driver focused control feel.

Lexus’ Tazuna concept for driver’s cockpit design ensures controls and information sources can be used with minimum movement of hand and eye, so focus is maintained on the road ahead. Steering wheel shape and angle and the position of the pedals have been precisely determined, while the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display can be customised in both appearance and content to suit the driver’s preference or priorities for the journey.  A head-up display is also available, for even safer and more comfortable driving.

A smooth and intuitive user experience is also provided by the Lexus Link Connect multimedia system, operated via a central 9.8-inch touchscreen or a voice control system that’s able to respond to requests in more conversational style. The attention to detail includes providing easy-operation physical switches for the audio and air conditioning.

For the front seat passenger there’s a sense of being warmly cocooned with the instrument panel design flowing into the doors to create a wrap-around effect. Soft-touch materials add to the comfort, including padded sides to the centre console. The influence of Lexus’ Takumi craftsmanship and traditional Japanese aesthetics are also evident in the new charcoal-finish Tsuyasumi trim inlays and in the Tatami-style upholstery stitching option.

The LBX range offers a wealth of prestige features. For example, the intelligent Lexus Climate Concierge constantly optimises heating and ventilation sources for each occupant, while a 13-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system is available, designed specifically for the LBX’s interior architecture. A power back door is also available, giving easy access to a well-proportioned load space with room enough to stow two 75-litre suitcases beneath the tonneau cover.

The Lexus LBX has received its first major European honours, being named the Car of the Year and Small SUV of the Year 2024 by the leading automotive magazine What Car?

Announced at a presentation ceremony in London on January 18th, the prestigious awards herald the arrival of a model that is expected to be a game-changer for Lexus, taking it into new market territory in Europe with the potential to accelerate sales and attract many customers new to the brand.

Lexus also maintained its complete dominance in the Reliability Award, collecting the honour for an unmatched seventh consecutive year.

Steve Huntingford, editor of the UK-based What Car?, said: “The What Car? Car of the Year title is reserved for the model which has moved things on farthest in the past 12 months, and this year that is the Lexus LBX. Despite competing in the hugely competitive small SUV market, it’s a better all-rounder than every rival, not least because it is the first car in the class to combine hybrid efficiency with big-car luxury. And at a time when prices seem to be going through the roof, it offers these strengths for an amazingly tempting price.”

Turning to the Reliability Award, he continued: “Unlike other What Car? award categories, this one required no debate because in our latest Reliability Survey, Lexus finished top for the seventh consecutive year. Not only are its cars among the most dependable you can buy, dealers dealt with the few faults that did crop up swiftly, efficiently and without charging any of the Lexus owners who told us about their cars. With sister brand Toyota finishing second in the survey, it’s clear these standards are company-wide.”

INTRODUCTION

The LBX is an all-new model for a new market for Lexus in Europe. It is set to be a game changer and key model for the brand’s growth in the region.

The smallest Lexus yet, the LBX is a self-charging hybrid electric crossover that’s designed to be accessible and easy to live with, in tune with contemporary style thinking that combines high quality with a casual feel. It offers much more than might be expected from a car in its class, embracing advanced technologies and making no compromise in the distinguishing Lexus qualities of luxury craftsmanship and Omotenashi hospitality for everyone on board.

For the first time, Lexus has focused the development of a vehicle specifically on addressing the preferences, tastes and trends of the European region. The LBX will immediately become a core model brand’s line-up, with 24,000 sales targeted in Europe in 2024.

The use of a three-letter name is significant – previously only the LFA supercar has enjoyed that distinction. The choice of the name LBX demonstrates Lexus’ commitment to and trust in its new model. Just as the LFA showed a different side to the brand in terms of attitude and performance, so the LBX will challenge the status quo and redefine what a small car can offer, energising and expanding the brand’s reach and profile.

As a new entry point to Lexus’ European model range, it offers strong appeal to a younger audience and those who may not have considered a Lexus before. It will also be an attractive proposition to those seeking to downsize or purchase a second vehicle, meeting their evolving lifestyle requirements.

Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endoh comments: “Our aim was to challenge the conventional concept of a luxury car. We have thoroughly pursued a driving experience that enables a natural dialogue between the driver and their vehicle and a design that has a refined presence.”

The driving experience is central to the LBX’s customer appeal and extensive efforts have been invested to ensure the constant control, comfort and confidence of the Lexus Driving Signature are delivered in a small car package. The package of fundamental measures includes fundamental revisions to the GA-B global platform, lengthening the wheelbase, widening the track and increasing body rigidity. Packaging, suspension tuning, braking and steering all play their part in producing a car that responds instantly and faithfully to the driver’s inputs.

The new powertrain, a self-charging 1.5-litre hybrid electric system, is tuned for rewarding performance, with powerful, linear acceleration from start-up. This helps deliver low-speed agility that’s well-suited to the demands of urban driving.  A new bi-polar nickel-metal hydride hybrid battery provides greater responsiveness from a smaller and lighter package, while extensive measures to address road noise and vibration ensure the kind of calm and quiet on-board experience appropriate for a premium model.

The LBX’s styling establishes a new Lexus identity with a “Resolute Look” front design that reinterprets the famous spindle grille. While the exterior dimensions are more compact than any other Lexus, the look is muscular and powerful. Inside, the emphasis is on driver-engagement with a focused driver’s cockpit based on Lexus’ Tazuna concept. Inspired by a rider’s precise use of the reins to control a horse (the meaning of Tazuna in Japanese) controls and information sources are arranged so that only small movements of hand and eye are required for operation, keeping the driver’s attention focused on the road. The cabin has a light, open feel with excellent visibility and an instrument panel that wraps around smoothly into the door panels.

In doing things differently with the LBX, Lexus has taken a new approach to building a model range, introducing choices that better reflect how today’s customers seek cars that match their personal style and character.

It is disrupting the traditional linear grade strategy to give owners more freedom to express their individual taste and sense of style.  True to Lexus’ commitment to “making luxury personal,” the LBX will be offered in a choice of four “Atmospheres” together with a generously specified entry model. Rather than being defined by the level of equipment or comfort features, these atmospheres focus on expressing different refined, dynamic or sporty themes through styling details, colours, textures and finishes. A new Lexus Bespoke Build programme, available for ordering from January in selected countries, will offer yet more personalised options.

The LBX is the first Lexus model to be manufactured at the Iwate plant in eastern Japan, a facility that has benefited from Toyota Motor Corporation investment to help regenerate a region that suffered devastation from the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011. Production will begin within this year; deliveries to customers in Europe will begin in early 2024.

THE LBX AND THE EUROPEAN MARKET

In developing the LBX specifically to appeal to contemporary European tastes, Lexus identified three key customer profiles: existing Lexus customers who want a second, smaller car; people who admire the Lexus brand and what it stands for, but have not yet found a model that suits their needs; and those who haven’t considered Lexus before, but whose interest will be triggered by the new crossover.

These consumer types will be attracted principally by the LBX’s eye-catching exterior design, the premium look and feel of its cabin – a sense of “one segment up” quality – and the performance and efficiency of the self-charging hybrid electric powertrain.

Personalisation is another asset, with Lexus giving owners the chance to tailor their car to their individual style with the introduction of the new Atmospheres interior styling options. Going further, Bespoke Build allows for even wider range of personal preferences to be catered for, in a service that’s more usually the preserve of top-of-the-range models. These measures reflect Lexus’ approach to “making luxury personal” and are pivotal in setting the car apart from its class competitors.

To help customers visualise how different option combination would look, Lexus has launched an online car configurator. This provides a virtual 3D, 360-degree introduction to the LBX, as though you are exploring an actual car, opening the doors and stepping inside to experience the design and the range of different colours, interior trims and features.

The launch model range includes an Original Edition, a top-of-the-range, high-specification version, limited to just 2,000 examples for the first European customers. Based on the LBX “Cool” Atmosphere, its bespoke features include a bi-tone exterior paint finish with exclusive Sonic Copper colour-way, matt black 18-inch alloy wheels, stylish exterior trim details and Original Edition badging and leather and Ultrasuede upholstery with black stitching detail.

The introduction of the new LBX gives Lexus a European model range that extends from this all-new crossover through luxury sedans, SUVs, people carriers and flagship limousines, coupes and convertibles. And even though this is the most compact model in the line-up, owners will still receive the industry-leading Lexus customer experience.

Next Chapter design

The team that created the LBX was encouraged by the company’s top management to apply fresh thinking, evolving the principles of Lexus Next Chapter design that have defined the latest generation of NX, RX and RZ models. It’s a design approach that directly interprets the car’s driving appeal – the case of the LBX, one that’s compact and nimble around town, agile and pleasing on winding country roads; and stable and refined in highway cruising.

The desire was to produce a car with strong visual appeal for younger, city-smart Europeans who favour premium quality that comes with a more casual, contemporary look and feel. This is a Lexus you will feel at home driving in jeans and sneakers, while still appreciating the luxury craftsmanship, premium quality and engaging driving character that are time-honoured hallmarks of the brand.

Frontal design with Resolute Look and “deconstructed” spindle grille

The most significant aspect of the design is a new frontal arrangement that “breaks” the spindle grille – a design hallmark for the past decade – leading Lexus into a new era.

Koichi Suga, General Manager Lexus Design, explains: “We have ‘deconstructed’ the spindle grille to make way for a new design. We’ve succeeded in creating a new front face identity that’s completely different from before yet is instantly recognisable as a Lexus.”

The grille has been unified in a single trapezoid shape, positioned below a narrow aperture that runs beneath the leading edge of the bonnet, linking the slim headlight units and emphasised by a one-piece chrome moulding. The design draws on the heritage of Lexus’ “Resolute Look.” Introduced with the LF-S concept car of 2003, this became a signature styling cue for Lexus production models from the early 2000s.

The seamless, frameless grille generates the lines of the LBX’s spindle body, contributing to the car’s strong, dynamic stance. It is also aerodynamically efficient, helping smooth airflow over and around the car. The new headlight design creates a strong visual signature, with the daytime running lights and turn indicators integrated in bi-functional units. With this new arrangement, the lights’ distinctive L-shape has been changed to face out rather than inwards, to match the direction of each indicator light. The headlights themselves are single-project bi-beam LEDs, equipped with an Automatic High-beam System (AHS) on higher grade models.

Design that expresses the driving performance

Following the principles of Lexus Next Chapter Design, the car’s identity and proportions are rooted in the driving experience it delivers. The front pillars have been pulled back, making the cabin appear compact and the bonnet longer for a sporty profile. The flared wings express power and accentuate the large (18-inch) wheels and tyres, while short overhangs and a bold tightening of the area around the rear doors evoke nimble, dynamic performance.

Rear design projecting a strong stance

The rear of the car also projects a strong stance, the styling inspired by a surprising source – the Kagami-Mochi rice cakes that are a traditional Japanese religious offering at New Year. These are made of two discs – a small one set on top of a larger one. When viewing the LBX from the rear, this balance of shapes is reflected in the car’s compact cabin positioned above a powerful underbody – another visual cue implying a low centre of gravity and stable handling.

Styling details include a subtly patterned film covering for the rear pillars, creating an intriguing textured appearance. Aero parts front and rear have silver accents that draw the eye to the strong underbody.

The licence plate has been moved down to the bumper, which makes the LEXUS name on the back door appear more prominent on the clean expanse of the back door. Similarly, the latest evolution of the Lexus signature L-shaped light bar has greater visual impact, with the turn signal and reversing lamps having a subdued presence when not illuminated.

The LBX is 4,190 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,545 mm high and has a 2,580 mm wheelbase. The tight, 5.2 m turning radius is ideal for urban driving.

Colour choices

The exterior colour choices include vivid shades and Lexus’ deep-lustre sonic finishes. Emotion and Cool versions can be specified with bi-tone paintwork, combining any colour option with a contrasting black roof.

Lexus designers sought to create a simple and refined interior that creates the feel and atmosphere of a higher segment model. This effect is founded on three key elements: good visibility with an open view out and an uncluttered, smooth instrument panel; the sense of wide interior space; and a centre console with a commanding presence.

Throughout, the cabin expresses the Lexus Omotenashi approach to making those on board feel welcomed and comfortable, with design details that anticipate their needs – from lighting and climate control, to the design and adjustment of the seats, the response of the multimedia system and the E-latch electronic door release system.

The driver’s cockpit is an interpretation of Lexus’ Tazuna concept, first introduced on the NX mid-size SUV. This positions principal controls and information sources immediately around the driver, so operation or reading only requires minimal movements of hand or eye, helping keep the driver focused on the task of driving, with least distraction.

To help maintain a wide, clear view and open cabin feel, the horizontal instrument panel has a clean and simple design. At each side, its form flows into the door panel, giving a sense of wrapping around the front seat occupants, so the feel is expansive yet encompassing. The continuous line created by this design also helps the driver sense the degree of vehicle roll when driving through bends.

Prominent centre console

The centre console is a prominent, rigid structure with a large display that’s tilted back so that it integrates smoothly with the structure. It also features upholstered side knee pads, a tactile, padded centre arm rest and a lower storage box for small items that also contains a 12 V accessory socket and C-type USB port.

Seating

The low hip-point adds to the driver’s sense of being at one with their car, giving them a sedan-like driving position. To ensure a good view out for everyone on board, the rear seats are set slightly higher than those at the front.

The seat designs focus on preserving a stable posture and minimising head movement when cornering, with a deep-hung cushion construction with an enlarged contact area and flatter seatback that holds the body snugly while keeping the chest upright. For the driver, this adds to their sense of connection with the car.

Eight-way power adjustment is available for the front seats. The rear seats divide and fold 60:40.

The LBX is the latest model to adopt a reminder system that gives an alert if children, luggage or other items are left on the front passenger or rear seats.

12.3-inch digital driver’s instrument display

The focused quality of the Tazuna concept is enhanced with a new, fully digital instrument displays – seven or 12.3-inch according to model specification. The lay-out and prominence of the meters and data change according to the drive mode selected and can be customised to suit individual preferences. The content of the multi-information display within the unit can also be adjusted.

An optional head-up display is also available with a choice of three operating modes to provide different amounts of information on vehicle performance and the status of driver assistance systems.

Steering wheel design

The design of the three-spoke steering wheel adds to the control, comfort and confidence elements of the Lexus Driving Signature, while programmable touch-sensor switches on the wheel provide quick and intuitive access to the driver’s preferred vehicle settings. A steering wheel heater is available in higher grade models, with options for synthetic or genuine leather trim. The shift lever is also positioned and profiled for comfort and ease of use, in line with the Tazuna design principles.

Upholsteries and trims

The premium quality and attention to detail is evident in the use of upholstery and trims with strong visual and tactile appeal. As well as top-quality semi-aniline leather, the same used on the LC flagship sportscar, the options include a vegan-friendly interior that uses synthetic leather and materials for the seat coverings and steering wheel, shift lever and door trims.

The LBX also features new Tsuyusami charcoal-effect trim inlays, created using a new film technique that uses multiple layers to give a highly textured appearance with a sense of depth.

Ambient lighting

The interior ambient lighting design adds to the Omotenashi effect of people being made welcome and feeling completely at home in the vehicle. Indirect lighting creates a premium ambience, for example around the door pull handles, footwells, wireless charger and lower console storage box.  different parts of the cabin to create a premium effect.

There are 50 different colour options, in 14 groups across five themes: Healing, Relaxing, Arousing, Focusing and Exhilarated. These can be selected to suit the driver’s mood, the journey or the time of day.

New Lexus Atmospheres

With the LBX, Lexus is taking a new approach to building a model range, to better match customers’ preferences and lifestyles.

The line-up offers a choice of four model “atmospheres,” in addition to the entry level grade: Elegant and Relax which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool which have a sportier, more dynamic character. Each has been designed with a different type of customer in mind.

Emotion and Cool models stand out with bi-tone paintwork and 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish. The Elegant and Relax versions have a monotone exterior paint finish and glossy 18-inch alloys.

Where the interior specifications are concerned, the Emotion model comes with perforated synthetic leather upholstery with red accents and contrast stitching on the seats, centre console and door trim. The LBX Cool – the top dynamic-themed model – has an Ultrasuede and leather bi-tone black/dark grey interior with copper details and stitching.

Different moods are evoked by the Elegant and Relax atmospheres. Synthetic leather in a subtle Forest Brown shade or Ammonite Sand features in the LBX Elegant, for the door panels, instrument panel and console pads as well as the seat upholstery. For the Relax model, the choice is Saddle Tan or Black semi-aniline leather with distinctive Tatami stitching.

In addition to the four Atmosphere-themed models there is an entry level LBX, which comes with advanced technology features as standard rather than extra-cost options. Notably these include the extensive active safety and driver assistance systems included in the latest generation Lexus Safety System +.

The entry model and the Emotion and Elegant versions can be specified with a vegan-friendly interior with no leather products.

Lexus Bespoke Build

Owners who wish to give their LBX a more personalised look can take advantage of the new Lexus Bespoke Build service. Lexus’ customer-first approach gives them the freedom to personalise their vehicle with tailor-made details – a service usually reserved for top-end luxury models.

The bespoke treatment allows customers to choose from exclusive exterior paintwork colours and create a personalised combination of seatbelt colours, upholstery embroidery patterns, stitching colour and trim ornamentation. The choice of luxury materials includes L-aniline leather – a prestige leather only available on LBX and the flagship LS sedan within the Lexus range – and Ultrasuede in different colour combinations. This personalisation service will be introduced in selected markets after the start of LBX sales, in 2024.

Multimedia, information and entertainment

The LBX is equipped with the latest Lexus Link Connect system, operated via a 9.8-inch touchscreen with an anti-reflective coating that makes it clear to read in all lighting conditions.

Its functions include cloud-based navigation, optimising journey planning with real-time information on traffic events and delays. Further convenience is provided by dynamic voice recognition and the “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant. This responds to voice commands from both driver and front seat passenger, recognising more conversational language. For example, simple saying “Hey Lexus, I’m cold” will prompt the system to raise the climate control temperature. It can also recognise whether the driver or the front passenger are speaking and can function without the need to turn off audio playback.

Smartphone integration is enabled using wireless or wired connections for Apple CarPlay, or a wired link for Android Auto.

The system’s My Setting function allows up to three users to register their own, customised preferences for the multimedia (audio, navigation, etc), vehicle (driving position, interior lighting, instrument display etc) and safety and driver assistance systems (PCS warning time, Blind Spot Monitor sensitivity etc). The car will automatically recognise the user either by the presence of a digital key, connected Bluetooth device or facial recognition (on models fitted with a Driver Monitor Camera).

In common with the latest new Lexus models, the LBX offers seamless over-the-air software updates for its multimedia and safety systems, so owners can benefit from upgrades without having to organise a visit to a Lexus workshop.

Digital key

Further convenience is provided by an optional digital key. Compatible with both Apple and Android devices, this allows up to five individuals per car to use an app on their smartphone to unlock and start the vehicle. They don’t have to take their phone out of their pocket or bag, just having it on their person is sufficient.

The app can also be used as a wireless key for remote vehicle locking and unlocking, allowing, for example, the car to be used as a secure drop off point for parcel deliveries. And if the smartphone is lost, or the battery is depleted, a physical key can still be used.

Audio systems

Mark Levinson, Lexus’ exclusive audio partner, has designed an optional premium system for the car, featuring an array of 13 optimally positioned speakers. The system comprises 10 9 cm Unity speakers, each with an integrated tweeter, plus 22.9 cm woofers in each of the front doors and a 22.4 cm subwoofer beneath the luggage compartment floor.

The system features the new Mark Levinson Quantum Logic Surround technology to deliver an accurate and full-bodied sound stage, smoothly balanced frequency characteristics and high clarity and definition.

The standard audio system for the LBX has six speakers, with four 9 cm mid-range speakers plus an 18 cm woofer in each of the front doors.

Air conditioning and Lexus Climate Concierge

The design of the air conditioning unit targeted weight and space saving, quiet operation and efficiency that helps overall fuel economy. Heating performance and energy efficiency have been enhanced with a new air inlet design that increases the recirculated air rate.

On higher grade models, Lexus Climate Concierge automatically co-ordinates air conditioning operation with the seat and steering wheel heaters so that the desired temperature is achieved promptly for each passenger. The system will also introduce fresh, low-humidity air into the upper part of the cabin to prevent window fogging, while recirculating warm air around the occupants’ feet.

The Climate Concierge further enhances cabin air quality, using nanoe-X, a Panasonic technology that discharges microscopic nanoe water particles from the air vents. These have multiple beneficial effects, helping inhibit viruses and bacteria and neutralising odours. They also have a moisturising effect on human hair and skin.

Using the Lexus Link app, owners can operate the air conditioning system remotely, warming or cooling the cabin or initiating windscreen de-icing prior to making a journey.

e-Latch electronic door release

Lexus’ e-Latch system provides intuitive, smooth and easy door opening and locking/unlocking with no mechanical noise.

On the external door handles, a door opening switch is provided on the back of the handle. Inside, the door pull and handle are integrated so the door can be opened in a single movement – no need to release the handle, then push. The release switch is designed to help prevent unintended opening; doors are auto-locked when the car’s speed exceed 4 km/h. Opening will only be permitted if the shift is in “Park,” the brake pedal is depressed, or the parking brake is engaged. If there is a loss of battery power, the doors can be opened manually.

The e-Latch is linked to the Safe Exit Assist system, which deactivates the interior door opening switch if there is a risk of contact with vehicles approaching from the rear (further details in the safety chapter, below).

Load compartment

With all rear seats in place, the load compartment in the front-wheel drive LBX extends to 402 litres, with space to carry two 75-litre suitcases beneath the tonneau board; in the all-wheel drive version there’s 317 litres.

Space has been maximised by eliminating recesses and protrusions and creating storage space for tools, a tyre repair kit and other items beneath the deck board. The lightweight folding tonneau board can be stored flat on the deck floor when larger items need to be carried.

Power back door

A power back door is available for the LBX, with a compact motor that provides quiet operation and quick response. The door can be opened using switches on the instrument panel and smart key, with a closing switch also provided on the bottom edge of the door. A close and lock switch will shut and secure the door, when the user is carrying the vehicle’s smart key.

The maximum opening angle can be adjusted by the user, for example to avoid hitting a low garage ceiling or other obstacles. The default setting is 79 degrees.

Advanced Park and Remote Parking

The LBX is available with an Advanced Park system which uses an array of four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to gain all-round, real-time coverage of the car’s immediate surroundings. This helps the driver achieve efficient, smooth automatic parking manoeuvres with fewer repositioning movements.

An automatic park function can be used for reverse and front-first parallel and series parking and exiting (forward exit from parallel parking position). It controls all the necessary vehicle control functions – steering, braking, accelerator and shift.

A memory function uses a camera image to provide automatic parking in up to three regularly used spaces, for example on a home driveway. Owners can also operate the system remotely, using a dedicated remote parking app on their smartphone, while carrying the vehicle’s smart key. This is particularly useful when having to park or exit very narrow spaces.

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

Driving performance was a focus point for development of the LBX. Lexus’ ambition was to deliver the Lexus Driving Signature in a small car package, engineering a vehicle in which the driver feels confident, comfortable and in control at all times. Prompt, faithful steering, braking and throttle responses and stable handling in all conditions generate a natural dialogue and constant sense of connection between driver and car.

Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endo explains: “We worked on achieving a nimble drive that maximises the benefits of the LBX’s small size and light weight, while focusing more than ever on honing the car’s fundamental characteristics, without relying on electronic controls.”

This involved measures such as lowering the centre of gravity, widening the track to enhance inertia specifications, making the body more rigid, reducing weight, using larger, wider tyres and revising the suspension. These all combine to ensure the car moves faithfully and responsively in line with the driver’s intentions.

Packaging: first Lexus to use the GA-B global architecture platform

This is the first Lexus to be built on the GA-B compact car global platform, fundamentally revised to help produce the Lexus Driving Signature.

An extended wheelbase, short overhangs and wide track combine to give greater stability and handling characteristics that make the car feel like a hatchback or sedan to drive. Using larger wheels and tyres increases the tyre’s contact area with the road surface, which adds to the stable feel and confidence-building sense of control.

The platform gives the LBX a low centre of gravity, but Lexus has secured a low, 285 mm hip point, to give the driver a position at the wheel that’s more like a sedan than an SUV, with legs extended rather than upright.

Strong body structure

Body rigidity is another key element in achieving the confidence, comfort and control of the Lexus Driving Signature.

The upper body is strengthened with structural adhesive and numerous short-pitch welding points, notably around the back door aperture. Reinforcements improve the torsional rigidity, while using lightweight parts such as an aluminium bonnet and moulded resin for the wheel arches, rockers and lower door sections helps maintain a low centre-of-gravity and contribute to fuel efficiency. The centre pillars and bumper reinforcements are made from light-yet-strong hot-stamped steel. The positioning of the roof reinforcements allows a thinner roof panel to be used, delivering further weight-saving gains.

The underbody meanwhile benefits from laser screw welding and high-decay adhesive strengthening measures. The positioning of the underbody reinforcements also has the benefit of reducing vibrations, making for a more comfortable ride.

Chassis and suspension

The suspension system has been designed for steering response and turning ability. Detailed measures have been implemented to enhance rigidity and response to lateral forces in the arms.

The front has a new MacPherson strut-type design that is rigid and lightweight to give agile handling and a high-quality ride. At the rear there is a torsion beam on the front-wheel drive LBX and a double-wishbone set-up with trailing arms to accommodate the E-Four system on the all-wheel drive model.

Aerodynamics

The new unified spindle and Resolute Look front design help improve the LBX’s drag coefficient, reducing front life and managing the flow of air from the front bumper down the sides of the vehicle.

Airflow over the car is optimised with details such flush belt mouldings, precise profiling of the front bumper corners and rear bumper sides and the addition of fin shapes to the rockers. The contour of the roof, the rear gate-style spoiler and the design of the rear combination lamps also play a part in the LBX’s aerodynamic efficiency and a 0.34 Cd figure.

Driving position

In addition to the lower hip point, Lexus has considered every aspect of the driving position to foster the sense of connection with the car that’s key to the Lexus Driving Signature.

The three-spoke steering wheel has been brought closer to the driver and set at a more upright angle, while driver’s view is enhanced by the shape of the bonnet and slim front pillars, giving a clear sense of the vehicle’s corners and reducing the left and right blind spots when manoeuvring and turning.

The seat design has been carefully considered, too, with a flatter back and a cushion structure and length that help the driver gain a better feel for how the car is behaving.

Noise and vibration control

The LBX may be a small car but Lexus has invested considerable effort in producing the kind of quiet, calm cabin environment customers might expect from a larger premium model.

The package of measures to control noise and vibration includes particular attention to the doors. Their closing sound has been tuned to communicate reassuring quality, using damping sheets inside the panels, covering service holes and using a sealer around the door trim.

A high-damping mastic is used on the roof to counter the transmission of road noise and an expansive roof silencer helps maintain cabin quietness, for example reducing the noise made by rainfall.

A seal is fitted around the entire bonnet opening, which suppresses noise caused by airflow turbulence. Engine noise is reduced thanks to the addition of a balance shaft, while the underbody features adhesive with a high damping quality and reduced gaps between parts. On higher grade models, acoustic glass is used for both the windscreen and front side windows, while liners, insulators and foam and other noise-absorbing materials are used at strategic points around the cabin.

Vehicle Braking Posture Control

This is the first vehicle in its class to use a Vehicle Braking Posture Control system. This provides automatic balancing of front and rear brakeforce to suppress pitching under braking and reduce roll when cornering. As well as keeping the car stable it also filters out vibrations to help maintain a comfortable ride.

The system uses independent front and rear pressure regulators to adjust brakeforce distribution according to the driver’s use of the brake pedal and vertical movement of the suspension. During initial braking, the vehicle will pitch in response, making it easy to feel how the car is slowing. When the driver applies more pressure on the brake pedal, more brake force is directed to the rear so that body lift over the rear wheels is suppressed and the car’s body sinks down. With reduced pitching, driver confidence is increased with a linear braking feel and a reassuring sense of the tyres having secure contact with the ground, even under heavy braking.

The LBX uses an electronically controlled, pressure-on-demand braking system with a high-performance pump motor for easy usability and a natural braking feel. Disc brakes are fitted – ventilated at the front and solid at the rear.

Steering

The electronic power steering is tuned for a nimble, smooth feel. The structure has an intermediate shaft with an expansion/contraction stroke mechanism that helps absorb vibrations.

The driver can manually adjust the steering wheel reach by 50 mm and height (tilt) by 40mm.

POWERTRAIN

The LBX has a new self-charging full hybrid electric powertrain that is both highly efficient and tuned for the kind of prompt, responsive acceleration that’s characteristic of battery electric power. It’s a key element in giving the LBX a rewarding driving character and securing the all-round rewards of the Lexus Driving Signature.

The total system output is 136 DIN hp/ 100 kW with peak torque of 185 Nm, giving 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.2 seconds for the front-wheel drive model, 9.6 with all-wheel drive. Official WLTP combined cycle figures indicate fuel economy from 4.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions from 100 g/km.

1.5-litre VVT-iE engine

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine has world-class thermal efficiency, supported by high-speed combustion, achieved with technologies evolved from Formula 1 engineering, including a longer stroke, increased valve angle and laser-clad intake valve seats. The Ultra-lightweight pistons are designed for performance at high engine revs and have a resin skirt coating that reduces friction with the cylinder wall.

Further thermal efficiency is gained from a variable cooling system that adjusts the coolant flow rate according to the engine’s running conditions and the outside temperature. This achieves quicker engine warm-up and reduces friction losses, contributing to fuel economy and supporting efficient air conditioner performance.

Electronic, intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side – VVTi-E supports a good balance between fuel economy and power response, even at low engine speeds or with low oil temperatures.

Hybrid transaxle

Lexus’ small-capacity hybrid system uses a new transaxle, designed to save weight and space. Nonetheless, it delivers 17% higher output than conventional units of the same size, with class-leading fuel consumption, quiet running and low emissions.

Artificial Intelligence tools were used together with Model Based Development (MBD) and precision measurement in the transaxle redesign to reduce the size of the geartrain and achieve a shorter transaxle unit. Further space is saved by the two motor-generators being located on separate shafts. Every element was scrutinised for ways size and weight could be reduced without sacrificing performance or quality. Details include new gear tooth design, lubrication and cooling mechanisms, casing design and the use of low-viscosity oil.

The new power control unit (PCU) is sufficiently compact to be mounted directly above the transaxle, helping secure a low bonnet line and consequently supporting both fuel efficiency and pedestrian protection performance.

New bi-polar hybrid battery

The LBX follows the all-new RX to become the second Lexus model to benefit from a new high-output bi-polar nickel metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid battery.

The innovative bi-polar technology allows for a higher power density to be achieved from a more compact and lighter battery unit. Response delay is reduced by half, which contributes to nimble, exhilarating performance, giving the kind of high torque delivery at low speeds that’s normally associated with pure electric vehicles. When braking, there is a faster power regeneration. It also benefits from a redesigned cooling system to help prolong battery life and performance.

The entire battery pack is accommodated beneath the rear seats, avoiding any loss of cabin or load space.

Hybrid Control System

The Hybrid Control system harnesses the increased electric motor and hybrid battery output to deliver sharp response at start-off and a feeling of continuous acceleration. Compared to previous hybrid systems, responsiveness has been increased by about 30% and initial acceleration by around 20%; acceleration is sustained, without the feeling of a drop off in momentum.

The system also supports rewarding performance by assisting acceleration and deceleration force when driving on inclines, so there’s less need to use the throttle when travelling uphill, or the brakes when going downhill.

With the hybrid battery contributing more power at start-up, engine revs are around 20% lower, so there is a more pleasing, linear relationship between the driver’s use of the accelerator and the engine sound.

The system detects when the car begins to travel downhill and automatically implements deceleration control, even when the driver comes off the brake pedal.

Predictive Efficient Drive

Predictive Efficient Drive predicts driver behaviour and road and traffic conditions to optimise hybrid battery power charging or discharging in line with the actual driving situation. This intelligent operation helps enhance fuel efficiency. It works in conjunction with the car’s cloud-based navigation, gathering data when following a route regularly used by the driver; it can be switched on or off as the driver prefers.

Predictive Deceleration Support recognises locations on the route appropriate for deceleration support and shows them as icons on the navigation screen. As the car approaches the support point, regenerative braking is increased to support the driver (this function operates even when navigation route guidance isn’t being provided). The increase in regenerative braking also provides more efficient battery charging.

The system uses Predictive State of Charge Control (SOC) during route guidance to pinpoint areas such as an uphill gradient or traffic congestion up to 10 km ahead and determine efficient battery charging or discharging. For example, Downhill SOC control will make use of battery charge before reaching a downhill route section, so the opportunity to recover energy isn’t wasted. Congestion SOC control proactively charges the battery before reaching traffic congestion, using information from live traffic reports. This potentially reduces the number of times the engine will have to start when moving in slow traffic.

Sequential Shiftmatic

Sportier versions of the LBX – Relax and Cool grades and Bespoke Build models – are equipped with a Sequential Shiftmatic system which lets the driver select the shift range using paddle controls on the steering wheel.

The system delivers highly responsive engine braking force in six steps, giving a shift feel similar to using a manual transmission and thus increasing the driver’s sense of engagement with the car, particularly when following winding country routes.

E-Four all-wheel drive

The driver can gain extra confidence from safe and stable performance when cornering or pulling away in low-grip conditions with the option of Lexus’ E-Four all-wheel drive. This introduces an additional electric motor on the rear axle and automatically directs an appropriate level of drive force to the rear wheels. The compact, fuel-efficient system can vary the ratio of front to rear-wheel drive torque from between 100:0 to 20:80.

SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE

In addition to features such as the Advanced Park system and Vehicle Braking Posture Control detailed above, the LBX is equipped as standard with the comprehensive safety and driver assistance provisions of the latest generation of Lexus Safety System +. This equips the car with multiple systems to detect accident risks, alert the driver and automatically provide steering, braking and drive force control if required to help avoid or lessen the consequences of a collision.

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) provides an increased detection range with a new combination of front radar and camera sensor. Its operational scope includes being able to recognise motorcycles and oncoming vehicles. Its Intersection Assistance is also enhanced, to include detection of oncoming vehicles and cross pedestrians when making a turn at a junction.

The system further benefits from Emergency Steering Assist which helps keep the car stable and within its traffic lane when the driver needs to avoid a parked car, pedestrian or other obstacle to the side of the road. The system is also available with Active Support, which works to avoid a collision by providing gentle braking and steering.

The PCS also provides Low Speed Acceleration Suppression, recognising sudden, unintended use of the throttle when driving at low speed. The optional Front Cross Traffic Alert warns the driver of approaching vehicles from either side, helping the driver at junctions with poor or compromised sight-lines.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) provides a wide range of inter-vehicle distance settings, so the driver can tailor performance to their personal preference.

Functions include Curve Speed Reduction, ensuring an appropriate speed for smooth driving through bends, and Overtaking Prevention, which regulates the car’s speed to avoid overtaking a slower vehicle on the wrong side on a multi-lane road. The driver can also easily reset the cruising speed to comply with changes in the speed limit detected by the Road Sign Assist system (RSA).

The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) has been enhanced to recognise more objects, including adjacent street furniture such as utility poles, kerbstones and guard rails. It can also recognise when the driver is steering to avoid a person or parked vehicle in the LBX’s traffic lane.

The high-performance camera used by the Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is better able to distinguish road markings; when markings are obscured, for example in heavy traffic, the system will follow the path of the vehicle ahead. It can also recognise 3D objects so can adjust its performance to give appropriate lateral clearance from vehicles in adjacent lanes or roadworks, operating in way that feels natural to the driver.

Lane Change Assist can be used when the car’s LTA is activated. When the driver signals to make a lane change, the system checks for safety using the PCS radar and camera, calculates the target trajectory and provides appropriate steering control. Once the lane change is complete, LTA returns to its normal operating status.

The Driver Monitor is a camera mounted above the steering wheel which keeps a constant check on the driver’s condition. If it recognises that they have lost concentration through being tired or unwell, it triggers visual and audible alerts. The system is linked to the car’s active safety systems, so that should the driver fail to respond, the car can be brought smoothly to a controlled halt with the hazard lights activated (Emergency Driving Stop).

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) includes Obstacle Anticipation Assist, Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist. The system operates at lower speeds, for example when driving around town. The front camera scans the area ahead of the car to check for hazards such as pedestrians about to cross or walking along the side of the road, parked cars and cyclists. If there is a collision risk, the system will provide braking and steering to avoid the obstacle, while keeping the car in its traffic lane.

The Lexus Safety System + package also provides Automatic High Beam or, on higher specification models, an Adaptive High-beam System for automatic adjustment of the headlight beams to achieve optimum forward illumination without dazzling oncoming traffic.

Road Sign Assist (RSA) can recognise and display a wider range of highway warning and command signs. The car’s speed limiter can be linked to the RSA, reducing powertrain output and applying braking if necessary to keep the car within the legal speed limit for a given road.

Help when making manoeuvres is provided by the Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Monitor, together with a Reversing Camera and a Parking Support Brake. The Parking Support Brake automatically applies drive force and braking control if there is a risk of contact with a static object, vehicles approaching from the rear or pedestrians, when moving at low speed.

Wet arm wiper

The driver gains better visibility in poor weather conditions with a new wet arm wiper, as featured previously on Lexus’ flagship LC and LS models. This distributes washer fluid from the wiper itself, giving more thorough and immediate windscreen cleaning performance.

This AI Experience is a part of the LBX Experience hub, which is a suite of digital experiences and personalised content available across Lexus online channels in Europe.

Designed to push the boundaries of the traditional online car-purchase experience, the LBX AI Experience aims to engage with a younger and social driven audience.

To start, users will be asked to log in to their Instagram accounts so the AI tool can analyse their posts’ aesthetics, personality, style, texture and colour palette. Then, it will generate a bespoke background visual to sit behind the LBX atmosphere suited to their style. Alternatively, if users don’t have an Instagram account, they can choose from a selection of images that will enable the tool to get more insights about their style.

Aligning with users’ one-of-a-kind style and personalities, millions of variations can be generated, so every piece of AI artwork is as unique as them. Once a piece of AI artwork has been generated, users can download and save it, as well as sharing it to their own social media profiles.

A small engine with big ideas

The three-cylinder engine may be small in size, but it boasts impressive technical features that maximise both performance and efficiency. Some of these have their origins in the cutting-edge world of Formula 1 motor racing, such as an ultra-lightweight piston design.

Although the unit has a modest 1.5-litre capacity, it is perfectly suited to powering the LBX as part of the self-charging hybrid electric powertrain. It meets all Lexus’ stringent requirements for long-lasting reliability and being naturally aspirated, is not subject to the operating stresses of turbocharging. Customer peace of mind when it comes to quality and durability is guaranteed with Lexus’ market-leading warranty of up to 10 years/160,000 km.

Maximum output from the full system is 136 DIN hp/100 kW with peak torque of 185Nm. This is expected to enable 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.2 seconds, while permitting confident towing of loads up to 750 kg.

The engine operates with exceptional thermal efficiency, which means more of the energy in every drop of fuel is converted into drive power. This is achieved through high-speed combustion and minimising losses from friction throughout the drivetrain. A variable cooling system helps the engine warm up quickly, adjusting automatically to its running conditions and the external temperature.

Using electronic variable valve-timing – VVT-iE – also supports efficiency and response, even at low engine speeds.

Smaller, lighter better

The focus on designing a system that’s smaller, lighter and ideally suited to the LBX – the most compact Lexus model yet – has brought about significant changes in the hybrid set-up. A new power control unit (PCU) ensures the increased hybrid battery output can be optimally managed; being relocated above the transaxle means it takes up less space, too. The compact packaging also sees the system’s two electric motor-generators positioned side-by-side on separate shafts.

The same principles apply to the hybrid battery. This is a new bi-polar nickel-metal hydride unit that, while being smaller and lighter, produces more energy, thus able to play a greater role in the car’s performance. The new hybrid system lets you drive at higher speeds and for longer distances in all-electric EV mode.

Feeling good

Close attention has been paid to delivering the hybrid system’s power in a way that’s pleasing and reassuring. The driver will appreciate how the powertrain is tuned for enjoyable performance and faithful handling, in particular with a smooth, linear acceleration feel that closely matches their use of the accelerator pedal.

On higher grade models, a sequential Shiftmatic system provides paddle controls to engage the shift range through six steps, giving the feel of using a manual transmission.

E-Four offers more

Lexus’ E-Four all-wheel drive system is available as an option on certain LBX models. Adding an additional electric motor on the rear axle automatically provides extra grip and stability when required on slippery surfaces and when pulling away and cornering, increasing driver confidence.

Optimal noise reduction

The LBX is engineered to minimise transmission of engine noise and vibration, including the use of a balancer shaft on the power unit itself and widespread use of noise-absorbing materials at strategic points throughout the vehicle.

The new hybrid battery has an impact as well: with more power supplied by the battery, the engine is able to run at up to 20% lower revs. In addition to being good for fuel economy, this means the engine sound is more closely aligned to the pressure the driver applies to the throttle.

Right from the start of the development programme, Lexus set out to overturn any preconception that customers who choose a smaller model have to settle for something that is inferior. The LBX compact crossover, the brand’s smallest model to date, is equipped as standard with an impressive array of high-tech features, with many more available as options. Technology that puts safety first

Where safety is concerned, every LBX model provides the peace-of-mind of the comprehensive, third generation of Lexus Safety System + being fitted as standard – just as it is on Lexus’ higher segment models. Its systems constantly monitor the traffic environment all around the car, giving prompt warnings when they detect an accident risk and intelligently providing assistance when needed – steering, braking and drive force – to help prevent a collision.

The technology is advanced, but operates in a way that feels natural to the driver. It can also make the job of driving less of a burden by automatically keeping the car centred in its traffic lane, at a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and at the right speed to take a bend.

Even parking has been made less stressful with an Advanced Park system which guides the car smoothly and efficiently into place, controlling steering, braking and shift operation. And with the Remote Park system, the driver can even initiate auto-parking using an app on their smartphone. They don’t have to be inside the car at the time, so it’s ideal when space is very tight.

The latest safety developments also include e-Latch, a smooth and refined electronic door release system with a Safe Exit Assist function which automatically prevents a door being opened into the path of traffic from behind.

The digital dimension

The LBX comes with a fully digital package for information, entertainment and connectivity, creating a seamless and intuitive user experience. For the driver, the focused Tazuna concept features Lexus’ first 12.3-inch digital instrument display. Its appearance changes according to the car’s selected drive mode and the driver can customise the layout to suit their personal preferences.

There’s also the convenience of a digital key option: no need for a physical key fob, you can unlock and start the car using your smartphone – just having it on your person is all that’s required. Up to five people can be authorised on the app, so car sharing is made easier and more secure.

Informed and entertained

In the centre console, there’s a 9.8-inch touchscreen display for operating the Lexus Link Connect multimedia which includes cloud-based navigation that’s constantly up-to-date with the latest traffic conditions to help with easy journey planning. The system includes a voice agent that recognises commands given in everyday speech and can be used even when the audio is playing.

The Lexus Link+ multimedia package takes things to an even higher level, with more functions for intelligent journey planning and localised information.

There are up to five USB ports around the cabin and smartphones can be instantly integrated with the car’s multimedia system – wirelessly for Apple CarPlay and with a wired connection for Android Auto.

Where both safety and multimedia functions are concerned, software updates are delivered over-the-air for installing when it’s convenient for the driver, so there’s no need to visit a service workshop.

For the ultimate in in-car audio, Lexus’ exclusive partner Mark Levinson has designed a 13-speaker premium surround sound system, specifically to suit the LBX’s interior architecture.

Comfort and wellbeing

A comfortable cabin environment is maintained whatever the weather outside, thanks to the Lexus Climate Concierge. This co-ordinates the different heating and ventilation sources to ensure temperatures are tailored to suit each person on board. Using the Lexus Link app, the cabin can even be warmed or cooled, or windscreen de-icing can be started, before you set off on a journey.

On-board wellbeing is boosted by the option of nanoe-X air quality technology. This sends a flow of microscopic water molecules into the cabin which are proven to inhibit viruses, bacteria and unpleasant odours. It also helps keep skin and hair moisturised, too.

An ambient lighting system is available, helping set the tone to suit the driver’s mood, the journey or time of day with a range of 64 different colours across a series of themed setting to evoke different atmospheres, from calm and relaxed to invigorating and energised.

On the 23^rd and the 24^th of November, at La Verrière du Marais, 5 Rue Saint-Merri, Paris, 75004, Lexus is hosting the people of Paris for a moment to pause and recuperate from city life amidst the ultimate hospitality. Embodying the core Lexus value of ‘Omotenashi’ - the unparalleled hospitality at the heart of the brand - guests will be welcomed into a true culinary immersion, from its luxurious, curated menu down to the interiors and decoration of the expansive space.

Lexus is partnering with renowned chef Mory Sacko to bring the ‘Extraordinary Boulangerie’ to life. Mory Sacko will bring his revered touch to the event’s culinary experiences. 

The event will mimic the process of baking from the start to the end. Guests will move through the chapters of proving, baking and tasting before they see the plat du jour, where the all-new LBX will be plated up and surrounded by dynamic lights that match the 4 different colours of the LBX.

The highly Instagrammable proving cabinet will surround guests in a collection of effervescent bubbles that simulate the light and fluffy effect of proving in baking.

Next comes the baking stage, where guests will move through warm glows of light and calming ASMR sounds of crackling pastry will create an immersive, multi-sensorial experience.

Calling on Lexus’ proud Japanese heritage and Japan’s iconic cuisine, guests will be treated to a delectable choice of sweet and savoury foods that will be displayed on sushi conveyor belts.

The event will only be open for two days with a unique opportunity for guests to experience the LBX through a multimodal integration of sight, touch, smell and taste.

To celebrate the launch of the new LBX, Lexus is hosting a series of four pop-up experiences in European cities: Milan, London, Madrid and Paris. ‘Making ‘Everyday’ moments ‘Extraordinary’ is at the heart of the LBX: a hybrid compact SUV that is remarkable in design yet practical for daily city driving. Each event focuses on elevating day-to-day experiences and reimagining the vehicle through immersive installations.

From October 26 to 29, Plaza de Colon in Madrid will be transformed by Lexus into an “Extraordinary Street Gallery”. Through the unexpected use of vast pink maritime containers, the public will be able to experience first-hand how an everyday square in the capital of Spain will be converted into an extraordinary space of art, design and technology which reflects the spirit of the LBX.

Various artists of recognized prestige, namely the architect and interior designer Fabián Ñiguez and the muralist Lidia Cao, will represent through 3D canvases, different qualities of the LBX in one of the most emblematic squares of Madrid.

The Lexus LBX will be the centre piece of the Agora, an unexpected installation where the old and the new meet to mimic the disruptive side of this new car.

Lexus has rewritten its own rule book in developing the all-new LBX urban-friendly crossover, not least in rethinking some of its most familiar design conventions. This radical new self-charging hybrid electric model – the most compact yet to bear the Lexus badge – has styling that sets it apart from its larger stablemates and signals its intention to capture the hearts and minds of a new breed of customer for the brand.

And if you’re looking for an element of surprise, its SUV-style “planted” look is in part inspired by the shape of traditional Japanese Kagami-Mochi rice cakes – another example of how Lexus references heritage aesthetics in its contemporary designs.

The team that created the LBX was encouraged by the company’s top management to apply fresh thinking, evolving the principles of Lexus Next Chapter design that have defined the latest generation of NX, RX and RZ models. The desire was to produce a car with strong visual appeal for younger, city-smart Europeans who favour premium quality that comes with a more casual, contemporary look and feel.

This is a Lexus you’ll feel at home driving in jeans and sneakers, while still appreciating the luxury craftsmanship and premium quality that are time-honoured hallmarks of the brand.

Nothing makes a clearer statement of the designers’ intentions than the LBX’s frontal styling, which presents a new Lexus “face”. The spindle grille, a signature feature of every Lexus model for more than a decade, has been rethought as a smaller, unified and frameless unit that blends into the bodywork.

Thanks to the compact hybrid engine, the front edge of the bonnet has been brought down, below the level of the headlights, drawing on the “Resolute Look” that characterised Lexus models from the early 2000s onwards. Fresh details include clever integration of the daytime running lights and turn indicators in a single unit, with the familiar Lexus “L” motif reversed to point in the direction of the turn.

A powerful stance and sense of power are all part of the traditional SUV look, qualities that the new LBX displays despite its compact dimensions. Viewed side-on, the classic elements are clear to see: short overhangs for nimble performance and powerfully flared front and rear wings. Achieving the taut, muscular surfacing around the rear doors proved one of the toughest challenges, but it is a key element in the car’s impressive road presence.

The eye is drawn naturally to the large-diameter tyres and 18-inch wheels and there is a strong sense of the LBX having reassuring stability, founded on its low centre of gravity. The visual message is that this is a car you can drive with confidence, whether on city streets, exploring country roads or cruising on the highway.

Inspiration for the LBX’s powerful proportions came from a surprising source – the Kagami-Mochi rice cakes that are a traditional Japanese religious offering at New Year. These are made of two discs – a small one set on top of a larger one. When viewing the LBX from the rear, this balance of shapes is reflected in the car’s compact cabin positioned above a powerful underbody – another visual cue implying a low centre of gravity and stable handling.

Moving the licence plate down to the rear bumper has allowed for a clean, uncluttered back door surface that throws the LEXUS name into relief. In common with other Lexus SUVs, the LBX has a rear light bar with its own, dedicated design. Here, it extends beyond the span of the back door to the rear wings, emphasising the car’s width and firmly planted look. 

The design is, of course, not just about engaging looks: throughout, fine details have been incorporated to achieve the best possible aerodynamic performance. This, in turn, is an important factor in giving the car stable handling and optimising its fuel efficiency. The roof, the gate-type spoiler and the rear combination lights are all shaped to smooth airflow over and away from the car. The belt-line mouldings sit flush with the bodywork and there are fins on the lower edge of the side sills add to the aerodynamic efficiency, together with precise styling of the front bumper corners and rear bumper sides.

To show the LBX’s lines off their best effect, Lexus is offering a choice of exterior paint finishes that includes vibrant shades of red, yellow and blue and the option of a striking bi-tone execution with a contrast black roof and pillars.

In just over a month’s time, the spotlights while be shining again on the Venice Lido to launch the 80^th edition of Venice International Film Festival – La Biennale di Venezia 2023. Lexus is returning as the Official Car of the festival for a seventh consecutive year and giving a starring role to its all-new LBX compact crossover.

The association between Lexus and one of the world’s longest-established cinematic celebrations reinforces the values the brand shares with the world of cinema, aiming to give people unforgettable experiences and opportunities to explore and immerse themselves in new worlds.

Electrified Lexus vehicles will provide chauffeur-driven transport for film-makers, actors and celebrities throughout the festival, which runs from August 30^th to September 9^th.   Actors Zendaya (Spider Man: No Way Home), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Josh O’Connor (The Crown) and Caroline Murino (Casino Royale) will be among those appearing on the red carpet.

This month, Lexus launched the first of its four pop-up events to celebrate the all-new LBX: a landmark model for the brand and the smallest Lexus yet. Centred around making the Everyday Extraordinary, the event took the shape of a traditional car wash and was held at Palazzo Bovara in Milan, Italy.

Lexus welcomed guests between July 18 to 20, hailing from across the globe. Open to members of the public as well as senior stakeholders and VIPs, the guestlist included Stefano Di Martino, Cristiano Caccamo and Hadise.

The LBX-inspired installations focused on cooling moments and mindfulness, and guests moved through the space as a car would through an autolavaggio. Starting in ‘Soak,’ they explored a series of overhead and vertical apertures, designed to envelop them in moving water - a sensation proven to be calming and meditative.

In ‘Spray,’ guests walked through a tunnel of lights that echoed the choice of atmospheres available in the new LBX, to make luxury truly personal. Here, mist arches cooled the pulse points where blood vessels are closest to the skin, relaxing guests as they walked through.

Paying homage to the car wash’s most recognisable feature, Lexus recreated a sensorial maze in a forest of lifesize rollers. This section, titled ‘Feel,’ forced guests to slow down as they moved between static and moving columns - and was a fan-favourite photo opportunity.

Stepping beyond the artificial aromas of classic in-car air fresheners, Lexus brought its Omotenashi hospitality to Milan through a garden of serene natural fragrances. Guests were surrounded by yuzu and koyamaki scents and treated to a refrigerated towel.

The event experience culminated with the iconic LBX vehicle itself: displayed against the dramatic moving backdrop of billowing fabrics. Guests could explore the condensed beauty and contouring of the premium compact SUV close up, and admire the Takumi craftsmanship incorporated throughout.

Online reservations

Lexus is opening the doors to ownership of its all-new LBX compact SUV with the launch of online reservations on July 3^rd.  Conceived and tailored to suit the preferences and lifestyles of European customers, the model is expected to become one of Lexus’ best-sellers in the region.

Reservations can be placed via national Lexus customer websites. People who register will subsequently be invited to complete a formal order contract process from October this year. LBX production will commence in late 2023 and the first cars are expected to be delivered to European customers from March 2024.

Online configurator

A 3D-effect online configurator went live on June 5^th, the day of the LBX’s world premiere. Available at LBX WebGL Experience | Lexus Europe, this gives customers a virtual 3D, 360-degree introduction, as though  they are exploring an actual car, opening the doors and stepping inside to experience the design and the range of different colours, interior trims and features. This up-close, detailed experience will help them build and choose their ideal version. Lexus has taken a new approach to structuring the model range, transcending the traditional hierarchy of equipment grades. It is offering the LBX in four contrasting “atmospheres”: Elegant and Relax, which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool, which have a sportier and more dynamic profile.

These give customers the freedom to make more personalised choices that better reflect their character and lifestyle. The range also includes an entry-level model, at a lower price-point.

LBX Original Edition

In selected European markets, the range will also include an Original Edition model. Around 1,500 examples will be made, offering customers the added appeal of exclusive styling features. These include a matt black finish for the alloy wheels, piano black detailing and lip spoilers on the front and rear spoilers and “Original Edition” signature badging on the back door. The inside theme is “black on black” with black leather and Ultrasuede upholstery, black seatbelts and black stitching and seat embroidery. The finishing touch is an Original Edition plaque on the instrument panel. Customers can already order their Original Edition via their national Lexus customers websites in selected European markets; and will also be among the first to receive their Lexus LBX.

INTRODUCTION

Lexus has a proud history of pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. Since its founding in 1989, it has repeatedly pioneered new thinking and new products that have changed people’s perceptions and reshaped the luxury car market. The all-new, all-hybrid electric LBX is the smallest Lexus yet, but fully deserving of its status as a landmark model, one which breaks down the traditional luxury hierarchy and which will be a game-changer for the brand in Europe.

LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover, a compact SUV that will extend Lexus’ brand appeal into new market territory. It embraces contemporary ideas in design and technology while maintaining the distinguishing Lexus qualities of the luxury craftsmanship and Omotenashi hospitality.

This is a car that’s simple, casual and easy to live with, but which makes no compromises in quality and attention to detail: the essence of Lexus has been distilled into a smaller package, transcending customers’ traditional expectations of what a premium compact SUV can offer.

It also breaks new ground by disrupting the traditional grade strategy to give owners more freedom to express their individual taste and sense of style.  True to Lexus’ commitment to “making luxury personal,” the LBX will be offered in a choice of four “atmospheres” in addition to its base grade. Rather than being defined by the level of equipment or comfort features, these atmospheres focus on expressing different refined, dynamic or sporty themes through styling details, colours, textures and finishes. A new Lexus Bespoke Build programme will offer yet more personalised options.

The LBX is also a breakthrough for Lexus as a business in Europe. For the first time, Europe has been the lead global region for the development of a new Lexus vehicle. This influence will help the LBX become one of the best-sellers for the brand in Europe.

The use of a three-letter name is significant – previously only the LFA supercar has enjoyed that distinction. The choice of the name LBX demonstrates Lexus’ commitment to and trust in its new model. Just as the LFA showed a different side to the brand in terms of attitude and performance, so the LBX will in its own way expand its reach and profile.

As a new entry point to Lexus’ well-established SUV line-up, it offers strong appeal to a younger audience and those who may not have considered a Lexus before. It will be an attractive proposition to those seeking to downsize or purchase a second vehicle, meeting their new lifestyle requirements.

Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endoh comments: “Our aim was to challenge the conventional concept of a luxury car. We have thoroughly pursued a driving experience that enables a natural dialogue between the driver and their vehicle and a design that has an refined presence.”

The LBX’s styling establishes a new Lexus identity with a “Resolute Look” front design that reinterprets the famous spindle grille. While the exterior dimensions are more compact than any other Lexus, the look is muscular and powerful. Inside, the emphasis is on driver-engagement with a focused driver’s cockpit based on Lexus’ Tazuna concept, and on creating a light, open feel with excellent visibility and an instrument panel that wraps around smoothly into the door panels.

In doing things differently with the LBX, Lexus has taken a new approach to building a model range, introducing choices that better reflect how today’s customers seek cars that match their personal style and character.

Following its world debut, the LBX will go into production in late 2023. Sales will begin in European and selected global markets from early 2024.

EXTERIOR DESIGN: A NEW LEXUS IDENTITY

Lexus’ design ambition was to create a car that is more relaxed than formal in character, displaying an authentic, effortless style that people will instantly feel a connection with.

The most significant aspect of the design is a new frontal arrangement that “breaks” the spindle grille – a design hallmark for the past decade – leading Lexus into a new era.

Koichi Suga, General Manager Lexus Design, explains: “We have ‘deconstructed’ the spindle grille to make way for a new design. We’ve succeeded in creating a new front face identity that’s completely different from before yet is instantly recognisable as a Lexus.”

The grille has been unified in a single trapezoid shape, positioned below a narrow aperture that runs beneath the leading edge of the bonnet, linking the slim headlight units. The design draws on the heritage of Lexus’ “Resolute Look.” Introduced with the LF-S concept car of 2003, this became a signature styling cue for Lexus production models from the early 2000s.

The seamless, frameless grille generates the lines of the LBX’s spindle body, contributing to the car’s strong, dynamic stance. It is also aerodynamically efficient, helping smooth airflow over and around the car. The new headlight design creates a strong visual signature, with the daytime running lights and turn indicators integrated in bi-functional units. With this new arrangement, the lights’ distinctive L-shape has been changed to face out rather than inwards, to match the direction of each indicator light.

Following the principles of Lexus Next Chapter Design, the car’s identity and proportions are rooted in the driving experience it delivers. The front pillars have been pulled back, making the cabin appear compact and the bonnet longer for a sporty profile. The flared wings express power and accentuate the large (18-inch) wheels and tyres, while short overhangs and a bold tightening of the area around the rear doors evoke nimble, dynamic performance.

The rear of the car also projects a strong stance. The licence plate has been moved down to the bumper so that the LEXUS lettered signature on the back door is more prominent on the clean expanse of the back door. Similarly, the latest evolution of the Lexus signature L-shaped light bar has greater visual impact, with the turn signal and reversing lamps having a subdued presence when not illuminated.

The LBX is 4,190 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,545 mm high and has a 2,580 mm wheelbase. The low-slung bonnet, belt mouldings flush with the body, a gate-style rear roof spoiler and precise light cluster designs enhance aerodynamic performance and contribute to the LBX’s efficiency, stability and responsive performance.

The exterior colour choices include vivid shades and Lexus’ deep-lustre sonic finishes. Emotion and Cool versions of the LBX can be specified with bi-tone paintwork, combining any colour option with a contrast black roof.

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE: A NEW LEXUS PLATFORM

The LBX is the first Lexus model to be constructed on a variation of the GA-B small car global architecture platform. It has been fundamentally adjusted to meet Lexus requirements, giving it the core benefits of a low centre of gravity, wide tracks, short overhangs and a highly rigid body. It is also the foundation of the car’s fun-to-drive character, helping secure the Lexus Driving Signature in the smallest package yet. This helps create a natural dialogue between driver and car that ensures confidence, control and comfort at all times.

Chief Engineer Endoh explains: “To realise the Lexus sense of being at one with the car, we worked to achieve nimble driving that maximises the benefits of the car’s small size and light weight. At the same time, we focused more than ever on honing the fundamental characteristics without relying on electronic controls.”

The body is strengthened with structural adhesives and short-pitch welding, and strategic placing of bracing and reinforcements. At the same time, vehicle weight has been kept down by the use of lightweight materials, including an aluminium bonnet and moulded resin wheel arches, rockers and lower door sections. Strong yet light hot-stamped materials are used in the centre pillars and bumper reinforcement.

Setting the hip-point as low as 285 mm helps make the driver feel more at one with their vehicle, while maintaining an excellent view from the wheel, particularly when driving in city traffic.

Front and rear suspension systems are designed for high rigidity and light weight, giving the LBX agile, stable cornering and steering response with smooth ride comfort. All versions feature a MacPherson strut design at the front; front-wheel drive models use a rear torsion beam while the all-wheel drive LBX has a double-wishbone arrangement.

The electronically controlled braking system includes Vehicle Braking Posture Control. This automatically  balances front and rear brake force distribution to suppress pitching and maintain linear, reassuring performance. It also helps reduce vehicle roll when cornering, keeping the car comfortable and stable and filtering out vibrations.

POWERTRAIN: A NEW GENERATION OF LEXUS HYBRID DRIVE

The LBX is powered by a new generation, self-charging Lexus hybrid electric system featuring a compact and lightweight 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine. The principal hybrid system components have undergone a substantial redesign, including the transaxle and power control unit, to improve efficiency, reduce losses, save weight and reduce size. There is also a new low resistance, high output, bi-polar nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery which enables extra electric motor support when accelerating and extends the car’s all-electric EV driving capability.

The technology developments have allowed Lexus to focus on more rewarding performance and a level of driving pleasure that was not possible with previous systems. Maximum output from the full hybrid system is 136 DIN hp/ 100 kW with peak torque of 185 Nm.

The engine operates with world-class thermal efficiency, supported by high-speed combustion technology and design features such as straight intake ports and laser-clad intake valve seats. Other key features include ultra-lightweight pistons engineered for operation at high rpm and electronic intelligent variable valve-timing.

The powertrain also features a newly designed transaxle. The revised power control unit is mounted directly above the transaxle, a design which helps give the LBX a low bonnet line. Further space is saved by the two motor-generators being located on separate shafts, reducing the drivetrain’s overall length.

The NiMH battery is an all-new bi-polar unit with reduced weight and a more compact design, yet it delivers higher output with much quicker response. Thus, it contributes to the LBX’s performance with instant, powerful acceleration like that of battery electric vehicle, as well as its fuel efficiency. It benefits from a redesigned cooling system to help prolong battery life and performance.

The powertrain is tuned for enjoyable performance, whether driving around town or on winding country roads, with faithful handling and a linear acceleration feel that is more closely aligned to the driver’s use of the accelerator pedal. Drivability is also enhanced by Hybrid System Control that closely matches engine sound and acceleration. Thanks to the hybrid system upgrades, all-electric EV driving can be enjoyed at higher speeds and over longer distances, maximising the LBX’s efficiency.

The LBX’s authentic SUV quality includes the option of Lexus’ E-Four all-wheel drive, which introduces an additional electric motor on the rear axle. When pulling away, cornering and driving on low-grip surfaces, the system automatically directs drive force to the rear wheels, helping keep the vehicle stable and maintaining driver confidence.

The LBX’s luxury status is witnessed by the lengths Lexus has gone to manage noise and vibration (NVH). These include adding a balancer shaft to the engine to reduce vibration that can generate a booming effect in the cabin. Special attention has been paid to the doors where damping sheets have been introduced to suppress high frequency noise but enhance low frequency noise to give a distinct and pleasing sound. To counter vibration and road noise from the roof, high-damping mastic has been used together with an extensive silencer made of a highly effective insulating material. Other measures include a seal around the entire edge of the bonnet and noise insulating and absorbing sheets, liners, mouldings and foam in key areas throughout the car. Beneath the vehicle, high-damping and structural adhesives play their part in reducing noise and vibration, while also contributing the car’s overall rigidity.

INTERIOR DESIGN: SIMPLICITY AND ELEGANCE, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND HIGH QUALITY

Lexus designers sought to create a simple and refined interior that creates the feel and atmosphere of a higher segment model. This effect is founded on three key elements: good visibility with an open view out and a simple, smooth instrument panel; the sense of wide interior space; and a centre console with a commanding presence.

The premium quality and attention to detail is witnessed in a choice of upholsteries and trims with strong visual and tactile appeal. As well as top-quality semi-aniline leather, the options include a vegan-friendly interior that uses synthetic leather and materials for the seat coverings and steering wheel, shift lever and door trims. The LBX also features new Tsuyusami charcoal trim inlays, created using a new film technique that uses multiple layers to give a highly textured appearance with a sense of depth. Ambient lighting adds to the Omotenashi effect of people being made welcome and feeling completely at home in the vehicle. Highlighting different parts of the cabin, the lighting design provides a range of 50 colour options, curated in themes that evoke different moods.

The driver’s cockpit is an interpretation of Lexus’ Tazuna concept, first introduced on the NX mid-size SUV. This positions principal controls and information sources immediately around the driver, so their operation only requires minimal movements of hand or eye. This helps keep the driver focused on the task of driving, with least distraction. The position and angle of the steering wheel were precisely calculated to give the driver a rewarding sense of control.

Here, the Tazuna concept is enhanced with a new, 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display, featured in a Lexus for the first time. The lay-out and prominence of the meters and data change according to the drive mode selected and can be customised to suit individual preferences. An optional head-up display is also available.

Thanks to the LBX’s compact size, almost every inch of the car can be seen from the steering wheel, adding to the confidence, comfort and control the driver enjoys with the Lexus Driving Signature. The contouring of the bonnet and the shape and position of the front pillars reduce the blind sports and give an extended downward view that helps the driver steer more precise lines.

To help maintain a wide, clear view, the horizontal instrument panel has a clean and simple design. At each side, its form flows into the door panel, giving a sense of wrapping around the front seat occupants, so the feel is expansive yet encompassing. The continuous line created by this design also helps the driver sense the degree of vehicle roll when driving through bends. A low hip-point adds to the driver’s sense of being at one with their car, while ample front knee-space is provided. To ensure a good view out for everyone on board, the rear seats are set slightly higher than those at the front.

The centre console has a strong presence with the large multimedia touchscreen tilted back so that it integrates smoothly with the structure. The unit has upholstered side pads and houses two cupholders and multiple storage points and USB ports for device connection and charging. The load compartment offers up to 332 litres (FWD models with rear seats in place) of space – room enough for two 75-litre cases to be carried beneath the folding tonneau cover.

MULTIMEDIA AND INFOTAINMENT

The LBX is equipped with the latest Lexus Link Connect system, operated via a 9.8-inch touchscreen.

The system provides cloud-based navigation, optimising journey planning with real-time information on traffic events and delays. Further convenience is provided by the “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant which responds to voice commands from both driver and front seat passenger.

Smartphone integration is enabled using wireless or wired connections for Apple CarPlay, or a wired link for Android Auto. Further convenience is provided by an optional digital key. Compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones devices, this allows owners to use their smartphone to unlock and start their car. They don’t have to take their phone out of their pocket or bag, just having it on their person is sufficient. They can also share the digital key when other people need to access or use the vehicle.

In common with the latest new Lexus models, the LBX offers seamless over-the-air software updates for its multimedia and safety systems, so owners can benefit from upgrades without having to organise a visit to a Lexus workshop.

Mark Levinson, Lexus’ exclusive audio partner, has designed an optional premium system for the car, featuring an array of 13 optimally positioned speakers. They include a subwoofer integrated in the back door, avoiding any loss of space in the load compartment.

MODEL RANGE: INTRODUCING LBX ATMOSPHERES

With the LBX, Lexus is taking a new approach to building a model range, to better match customers’ preferences and lifestyles.

The line-up offers a choice of four model “atmospheres” in addition to the base grade: Elegant and Relax which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool which have a sportier, more dynamic character. Each has been designed with a different type of customer in mind.

Emotion and Cool models stand out with bi-tone paintwork and 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish. The Elegant and Relax versions have a monotone exterior paint finish and glossy 18-inch alloys.

Where the interior specifications are concerned, the Emotion model comes with perforated synthetic leather upholstery with red accents and contrast stitching on the seats, centre console and door trim. The LBX Cool – the top dynamic-themed model – has an Ultrasuede and leather bi-tone black/dark grey interior with copper details and stitching.

Different moods are evoked by the Elegant and Relax atmospheres. Synthetic leather in a subtle Forest Brown shade or Ammonite Sand features in the LBX Elegant, for the door panels, instrument panel and console pads as well as the seat upholstery. For the Relax model, the choice is Saddle Tan or Black semi-aniline leather with distinctive Tatami stitching.

In addition to the four atmosphere models there is an entry level LBX which, comes with advanced technology features as standard rather than extra-cost options, in contrast to some competitor models. Notably these include the extensive active safety and driver assistance systems included in the latest generation Lexus Safety System +. The entry model and the Emotion and Elegant versions can be specified with a vegan-friendly interior with no leather products.

Equipment option highlights include a 12.3-inch Tazuna concept digital instrument display, head-up display, remote parking, digital key, Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio, Panasonic’s nanoe™-X air purification technology and a power back door.

Lexus Bespoke Build

Owners who wish to give their LBX a more personalised look can take advantage of the new Lexus Bespoke Build service. Lexus’ customer-first approach gives them the freedom to personalise their vehicle with tailor-made details.

The bespoke treatment allows customers to change the colour of the seatbelts and the upholstery embroidery patterns and stitching colour and the trim ornamentation. The choice of luxury materials includes L-aniline leather – a prestige leather only available on LBX and the flagship LS sedan within the Lexus range – and Ultrasuede in different colour combinations. This personalisation service will be introduced in selected markets after the start of LBX sales in 2024.

SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE

The LBX benefits from the comprehensive safety and driver assistance provisions of the latest generation of Lexus Safety System +. This equips the car with multiple systems to detect accident risks, alert the driver and automatically provide steering, braking and drive force control if required to help avoid or lessen the consequences of a collision. Key elements include a Pre-Collision System with Intersection Turn Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist/Lane Keep Assist and Road Sign Assist. Additional items that support safer driving and manoeuvring and reduce the burden on the driver include Lexus’ e-latch electric door release system with Safe Exit Assist, a driver monitor, intelligent parking sensors with auto-braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Blind Spot Monitor.

An extended safety will be optionally available, introducing features such as a Front Cross Traffic Alert system and a Panoramic View Monitor. A remote parking option can take all the stress out of manoeuvring the car into a tight space; it even allows the driver to park their vehicle remotely, using their smartphone.

The driver enjoys better visibility in poor weather conditions with a new wet arm wiper, as featured previously on Lexus’ flagship LC and LS models. This distributes washer fluid from the wiper itself, giving more thorough and immediate windscreen cleaning performance.
