Best-in-class results for vulnerable road user protection (pedestrians and cyclists)

Among the top performers for adult & child occupant protection

Built on the extremely rigid new GA-C platform

Equipped with the latest Lexus Safety System + package

The new Lexus UX crossover has achieved the maximum 5-star vehicle safety rating in the latest 2019 Euro NCAP test results.

Whilst its bold design expresses unmistakable style, the new UX is one of the safest cars of its kind for driver and passengers (96% adult occupant protection score and 85% child occupant protection score), one of the highest of any car tested under the new, more stringent 2019 test regime, and best-in-class for pedestrians and cyclists protection Automated Emergency Braking (82% vulnerable road user protection score).

Featuring the latest version of Lexus Safety System +, the brand’s advanced package of active safety technologies, the new Lexus crossover also boasts outstanding passive safety credentials resulting from its ultra-rigid Global Architecture-C platform and 8 airbags fitted as standard.

This second generation of Lexus Safety System + incorporates several new features to help prevent or mitigate accidents. These include daytime cyclist detection and now also night-time pedestrian detection as part of the enhanced Pre-Collision System (PCS). Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist provide SAE level-2 automated driving support – aiming at reducing driver operation while remaining in control of the vehicle.

Lexus Safety System + is now available on 99% of Lexus models sold in Europe, in line with the brand’s commitment that the benefits of advanced safety technologies are not limited to high-end, high-specification models, but are made available across the complete Lexus range..

The latest system includes the following:

- Pre-Collision System, now with pedestrian night-time detection and daytime cyclist detection

- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

- Road Sign Assist

- Lane Tracing Assist

- Automatic High Beam

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM

The Pre-Collision System on the new UX can now detect pedestrians even in low light conditions and bicycles during daytime. To achieve this, the camera sensitivity and dynamic range have been enhanced to help reduce accidents in the dark – when, for example, a pedestrian in front of an oncoming vehicle is difficult to see due to the vehicle’s lights. Furthermore, the millimetre-wave radar detection area angle has been widened, enabling bicycles to be detected. If the system judges that the possibility of a collision is high, the brakes are automatically applied to support collision avoidance, or reduce damage in the event of a collision.

DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL

The system uses the millimetre-wave radar sensor and a camera to detect the vehicle in front and provide control to maintain an appropriate distance. If the vehicle in front comes to a halt, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will stop the UX. When the vehicle moves off again, the UX will continue following when prompted by the driver. This system reduces the burden on the driver in situations requiring frequent starting and stopping.

ROAD SIGN ASSIST

The Road Sign Assist (RSA) system on the new UX recognises traffic signs and provides information to the driver via the multi-information display. When linked to Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, the car’s speed setting can, at the touch of a button, be quickly reset in accordance with the speed limit recognised by RSA. RSA identifies all important road signs and warnings, including electroluminescent and flashing signs.

LANE TRACING ASSIST

Lane Tracing Assist helps the driver to keep the UX in the centre of the lane. It also provides assistance when driving around bends, with a tighter radius than the previous system. When it determines that there is a possibility of the UX departing from the lane, the system will switch to departure prevention control, providing support for returning the car to the centre of the lane.

AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM

Available as standard with the Lexus Safety System +, Automatic High Beam (AHB) automatically turns the high beam lamps off if another vehicle is detected and on again once the vehicle is gone. An even more sophisticated system is available as an option on the UX: Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) comes with triple-beam LED headlamps and is designed to provide enhanced night-time visibility while controlling dazzle for oncoming vehicles. Eleven independent LED chips integrated in the headlamps are enabled/disabled following the path of preceding or oncoming vehicles for precise control of the illuminated and non-illuminated areas.

UX cabin shaped by ‘engawa’, an architectural concept which defines the smooth transition from interior to exterior design

Traditional ‘sashiko’ quilting stitched by Lexus’ ‘Takumi’ craftspeople

‘Washi’ dashboard trim which exhibits the texture of ancient Japanese paper sliding doors

Design features which embrace ‘Omotenashi’ hospitality

‘Engawa’ architecture

Despite the UX’s compact exterior dimensions, the design team wanted to ensure that its inside felt open and spacious. One of their solutions was inspired by a traditional Japanese architectural concept called ‘engawa’.

“Houses in Japan often have a veranda area which bridges the boundary between the inside and the outside. The Lexus UX has something similar: we’ve made a seamless connection between the cabin and the car’s exterior,” explains UX Chief Designer Tetsuo Miki.

This design detail gives UX passengers an open and airy feeling and the driver a precise sense of the extremities of the car, making it much easier to drive and manoeuvre in confined spaces. Overall visibility in the UX is enhanced by a low bonnet enabled by the new (GA-C) platform and the low-mounted drivetrain.

‘Sashiko’ stitching

The smooth leather upholstery available on the UX is inspired by ‘sashiko’, a traditional Japanese quilting technique used in the making of judo and kendo martial arts uniforms. Requiring a steady, skilful hand, sashiko quilting is executed by Lexus’ ‘Takumi’ craftspeople, who are the artisans of the Lexus factory floor and the best of the best. The quilted leather is decorated with new perforation patterns that form mathematical curves and gradations in perfect alignment, enhancing the appearance of the seats.

“The traditional ‘sashiko’ stitching technique is over 1,200 years old, and with up to 10 stitches per inch, its strength makes it popular for judo and kendo uniforms. This craft form was also put to good use by early Japanese fire fighters, with sashiko stitching covering their protective cotton coats,” says UX Interior Designer, Keiko Shishido.

‘Washi’ trim

The new UX is the first Lexus to offer dashboard trim which draws on the grain of a paper, known as ‘washi’, familiar from the ‘shoji’ paper sliding doors of traditional Japanese houses.

‘Omotenashi’ hospitality

Ever since the first Lexus was unveiled in 1989, the company has gone the extra mile for its customers. Evidenced by countless awards over the last 30 years, Lexus aims to treat customers as if they were a guest in one’s home. The inspiration for this peerless level of customer service is ‘Omotenashi’,which translates from the Japanese as ‘hospitality and polite service’. However, Omotenashi is much more than excellence of service; it is an ancient concept that describes one’s ability to anticipate the needs of another.

Omotenashi also influences how Lexus designs cars like the new UX. We see it in the hands-free power tailgate, for example, which makes for convenient loading and unloading. And the S-Flow Climate Control, which discharges mildly acidic nano-e® ions, filling the cabin with fresh air and creating an atmosphere that gently moisturises skin and hair.

We hope you enjoyed this series of blog posts and look forward to welcoming you to a UX test drive at a Lexus dealership of your choice. www.lexus.eu/ux

IMAGINATIVE THINKING USED TO ENGINEER THE LEXUS UX 250h SELF-CHARGING HYBRID

<pp:caseid>316237</pp:caseid>

Hundreds of Lexus engineers and technicians spent nearly five years developing the new UX 250h crossover. Working to an incredibly demanding brief, they left no stone unturned in creating one of the most advanced vehicles Lexus has ever built.

As well as perfecting breakthrough manufacturing processes and lightweight composite materials, the team used all its imagination and two decades of hybrid experience to develop a new fourth generation self-charging hybrid powertrain.

2.0-litre Petrol Engine

The UX 250h’s new 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder petrol engine is one of the most efficient ever built by Lexus (41% thermal efficiency). Advanced features include laser-cut intake valve seats, a high compression ratio (14:1) and D4-S fuel injection combining direct and secondary port injectors. In addition, while exhaust heat recirculation enables quick engine warm-up, Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Electric enhances drivability and at the same time reduces emissions.

Front Hybrid Transaxle

The UX 250h features a newly engineered front hybrid transaxle which connects the highly efficient 2.0-litre petrol engine to two electric motor/generators, achieving class-leading fuel consumption, quietness and driving performance.

To make the new transaxle more compact and to improve driving performance, Lexus engineers specified an innovative multi-axial layout in place of the conventional arrangement where MG1 (power generation) and MG2 (drive) electric motors are arranged on the same axle. Compared to the previous Lexus compact car transaxle, the unit’s length has been reduced by approximately 45 mm. These compact dimensions allow the steering gear more room to achieve the UX’s class-leading turning radius (10.4 metre curb-to-curb diameter). In addition, with overall transaxle frictional losses reduced by 25%, MG2 is now a higher-speed motor, yielding better performance and efficiency.

Important for smoothness and the long-term reliability of the UX 250h’s self-charging hybrid powertrain, Lexus engineers also developed a new system for returning cooled oil to the transaxle and to the MG1/MG2 motor/generators.

Power Control Unit

The UX 250h’s compact new Power Control Unit (PCU) is 20% more powerful yet 10% lighter than previous units. Critical for both design and safety considerations, the PCU’s size and weight were reduced by developing a new compact circuit board, DC-DC converter and power stack structure, which together resulted in a 20% reduction in power losses and improved fuel efficiency. Lexus engineers also introduced a 2-in-1 power card which is smaller and features double-sided cooling efficiency. Meanwhile, optimizing the output filter has further reduced noise levels.

The new PCU is mounted directly above the front hybrid transaxle, contributing to the compactness and reduced weight of the entire system and creating more space inside the engine compartment. This in turn allows for a low aerodynamic bonnet while providing improved pedestrian protection in the event of a collision.

Hybrid Battery

The UX 250h’s newly developed nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery not only makes for improved fuel efficiency and Electric Vehicle performance, it also saves on space. Benefitting from a new electrode material, its reduced size has been made possible by a revised construction and a more compact cooling system. Featuring 180 cells of 1.2 V each for a total voltage of 216 V, the UX 250h’s hybrid battery produces 24 kW and is located below the rear seat, minimising intrusion in the load space and supporting the UX’s optimized front/rear weight distribution and low centre-of-gravity.

E-FOUR

The new E-FOUR all-wheel drive system on the UX 250h uses a dedicated electric motor/generator integrated into the rear differential. Compared to previous Lexus E-FOUR systems, the rear hybrid transaxle has been greatly reduced in size and weight, enhancing rear luggage space and improving the car’s handling stability. Information sent from various sensors (wheel speed sensors, G sensor, yaw rate sensor, steering angle sensor, etc.) is used to precisely control the front-rear torque distribution in ratios between 100:0 and 20:80 when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces. E-FOUR also ensures stable driving on uphill slopes or snow-covered roads with lower fuel consumption than conventional, heavier all-wheel drive systems.

Lightweight Materials

To improve the UX 250h’s efficiency and performance, the engineering team set out to reduce weight wherever they could. While the UX 250h’s 112 kg petrol engine is one of the lightest in class, the engineers saved a substantial 27 kg by using aluminium instead of steel for the doors, wings and bonnet and composite materials for the tailgate. The adoption of an aluminium internal tailgate frame with Super Olefin Polymer outer and inner panels was another Lexus first. These weight-saving measures resulted in the UX having the lowest centre-of-gravity (594mm) of any vehicle in its class and the agile handling normally associated with a dynamic hatchback.

The UX 250h is now on sale in Europe. In our next blog post we examine the Japanese traditions that inspired the design and craftsmanship of this new crossover. www.lexus.eu/ux

UX 250h: POWERED BY A FOURTH-GENERATION LEXUS SELF-CHARGING HYBRID

<pp:caseid>314353</pp:caseid>

Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid intelligently combines petrol and electric power

The new UX 250h can be driven in Electric Vehicle mode for up to 50% of the time

EURO 6d compliant with lowest CO2 in class, near-zero NOX and particles

The UX 250h never needs plugging in and offers low running costs

Once drivers get behind the wheel of the new UX 250h they will quickly realise that this isn’t just ‘another crossover’. Powered by a fourth-generation Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid, it’s very responsive to drive, but like all Lexus hybrids, offers the best fuel efficiency and lowest emissions in class Free from plugs or range issues. In real-life city driving, the UX 250h can use electric power for a significant part of every journey – up to 50%, depending on driving conditions.

LEXUS SELF-CHARGING HYBRID

Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid on the UX 250h orchestrates a seamless blend of power from a highly efficient 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and powerful electric motor(s). Available with front-wheel drive or E-FOUR all-wheel-drive, the system has a compact new transaxle and Power Control Unit. A newly developed nickel metal-hydride battery is located below the rear seat, minimising intrusion in the load space and contributing to the UX’s low centre-of-gravity. Importantly, Lexus engineers focused not just on outstanding fuel economy and low emissions, but also on a high level of driving appeal.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE MODE

When cruising or accelerating slightly, the front electric motor (and extra rear electric motor on all-wheel-drive models) is able to propel the car with electric power supplied by the hybrid battery. At this point the vehicle is almost silent, uses no petrol and produces zero emissions.

DYNAMIC YET SMOOTH

At higher speeds, the ultra-smooth Atkinson Cycle petrol engine cuts in quietly while still receiving assistance from the electric motor(s) when required. Through the near perfect distribution of these two power sources, the UX 250h provides superior driving enjoyment, together with low fuel consumption and emissions.

RAPID ACCELERATION

At full acceleration, the power of the electric motor(s) instantaneously supplements the 2.0-litre petrol engine. Together they deliver a potent surge of torque, providing linear acceleration precisely when needed.

NO NEED TO PLUG-IN

On braking, or when the driver’s foot is taken off the accelerator, regenerative braking harnesses kinetic energy to generate electricity which, together with electric power produced during normal driving conditions, is stored in the hybrid battery, meaning the UX 250h never needs to be plugged in.

LEADERS IN HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

Like all major technological breakthroughs, Lexus’ lead in hybrid technology did not happen overnight. As part of a long-term drivetrain strategy, it developed the first hybrids back in the mid-1990s. Since Lexus launched the world’s first premium hybrid in 2005, the RX 400h crossover, Lexus has sold over 1.4 million Self-Charging Hybrids. Today nine different hybrid models are offered in Europe, from the LC 500h and LS 500h Multi-Stage Hybrids, right through to the super-efficient CT 200h luxury compact.

LOW COST OF OWNERSHIP

As well as being fun to drive, the UX 250h offers low cost of ownership and high residual value. This is due primarily to Lexus’ industry-leading experience in engineering Self-Charging Hybrids, batteries which last as long as the car itself, and the inherently low wear and tear of the Lexus system.

REDUCED SERVICING COSTS

The UX 250h has been designed without a clutch, while the starter motor and alternator are integral to the hybrid system and require no servicing or replacement over the life of the vehicle. The conventional timing belt has also been replaced by a maintenance-free timing chain. With no need to service or replace these parts, UX 250h owners can realise a saving of around €1,500 over a 5 year ownership period.

HYBRID BATTERY LIFE = CAR LIFE

With a proven reliability record over some 60 billion kilometres of driving worldwide, a Lexus hybrid battery is designed to last the entire life of the car. Rigorously engineered for performance and durability, it is covered by a 5 year, 100,000 km warranty.

LOWER BRAKE AND TYRE WEAR

Thanks to the Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid’s regenerative braking system, which delivers the first half of all braking force, both pad and disc wear are significantly reduced. Over the course of 90,000 km, a Lexus hybrid will usually require no disc replacement and just one set of replacement brake pads. Additionally, the higher tyre pressure of hybrid vehicles helps to decrease shoulder wear on tyres, while linear power delivery and the car’s balanced weight distribution reduce tyre wear even further.

In the next UX news post we investigate how Lexus engineers developed a new hybrid transaxle, electric motor cooling system, compact Power Control Unit, hybrid battery, E-FOUR AWD system and ultra-light materials for the new UX 250h.

With the first cars arriving early in 2019, UX drivers will discover a crossover rich in imaginative technology and beautiful craftsmanship.

• Collaboration with neural scientists to create the ultimate luxury car door sound

• Takumi-crafted ‘sashiko’ seat stitching as used in traditional judo and kendo uniforms

• ‘Omotenashi’-inspired windscreen wipers that pause to avoid splashing passengers

• Cutting-edge measuring equipment helps precision assembly by Lexus craftspeople

The following features highlight the lengths to which the Lexus designers, engineers and master craftspeople went in creating the new UX:

1. The science of luxury door sounds

Car doors are the driver’s first point of contact point with any vehicle. Leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of luxury, Lexus acoustic engineers collaborated with neural scientists to arrive at the ultimate car door sound. Based on research into the brain waves which are created when a luxury car’s door closes, the team selected bespoke materials and adjusted the door shape by tenths of a millimetre to produce a satisfying, reassuring tone. Finally, to ensure the correct closing sound, Lexus’ ‘Takumi’ craftspeople listen to and, where necessary, adjust each UX door in a dedicated ‘Quiet Room’ facility before the car leaves the Kyushu plant.

2. ‘Sashiko’ stitching on leather seats

The new UX crossover can be ordered with leather seat upholstery inspired by ‘sashiko’, a traditional Japanese stitching technique used to apply protective quilting to judo and kendo uniforms. For a distinctive visual effect reflecting the crossover’s front signature grille, Lexus craftspeople stitch along mathematical curves aligned with the perforation pattern and the seat ventilation outlets. The result is a sophisticated fusion of art and functionality.

3. Wireless illuminated vent controls

For ease of operation, each ultra-slim air vent on the new UX features a single knob to control both airflow direction and intensity. On Luxury-grade models, illuminated vent controls house a wireless LED light source powered by electrical induction. This advanced yet elegant detail helps the driver or front seat passenger find the vent control in the dark. Additionally, it also creates a comforting sense of depth, even though the illuminated knob is only 3 mm in diameter.

4. Sophisticated power window system

Complementing the ambience of sophisticated luxury inside the cabin, the opening and closing of the UX’s power windows is carefully controlled to reduce noise and juddering. Additionally, to protect the driver and passengers, all power windows are equipped with a jam and entanglement function, which prevents shirtsleeves or children’s fingers from being trapped.

5. Windscreen wipers which pause for passengers

The wiper system in the new UX is one of the most innovative of its kind, equipped not only with an automatic sensor but with the ability to slow down gradually so as not to impair driver concentration. Underlying the Lexus spirit of ‘Omotenashi’ (Japanese for ‘hospitality and polite service’), the wipers automatically stop when a door opens to prevent guests entering or exiting the car from being splashed.

6. Imaginative folding luggage cover

An innovative feature which highlights the customer centric approach that Lexus takes to design, the UX’s luggage cover can be folded like a net when not in use and stored in the car with a minimum of obstruction.

7. Precision-assembled tailgate

The assembly of every UX crossover is performed by skilled Lexus craftspeople, using cutting-edge technology. To ensure its smooth operation, every UX tailgate and tailgate opening is measured at around 200 different reference points prior to assembly. The digital measuring equipment employed even allows for minute differences in temperature and humidity. Based on this data, Lexus craftspeople are then able to adjust each UX tailgate to fit exactly, ensuring it will operate perfectly for many years to come.

Drivers who wish to experience the above features and many more on the new Lexus UX should contact their local Lexus dealership to arrange a test drive: www.lexus.eu

New UX inspired by a concept unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show

Strong synergy between the exterior and interior styling

‘Cross-Create’ design approach based on the Lexus ‘YET’ philosophy

Captivating crossover design with meticulously crafted surfaces

The first sign that Lexus was about to enter the highly competitive compact crossover market came at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, with the launch of the UX Concept: a radical design study combining a coupé-like roofline with the muscular appearance of a rugged 4x4.

The UX Concept was developed at Lexus’ ED2 design studio in the South of France: “Our brief was to create a new genre of crossover; a vehicle that would progress the ownership experience and create something really unique. We studied ideas from many sources, but the main inspiration came from the 'Secure YET Agile' motif,” explained Stephan Rasmussen, Exterior Designer at ED2.

The UX Concept highlighted Lexus' intention to attract an ever-wider group of younger, highly connected urban customers: “We paid particular attention to the human-centric aspect of the design. Using a Japanese architectural style called ‘engawa’, we developed a powerful symbiosis between the exterior and interior of the car,” said Alexandre Gommier, Interior Designer at ED2.

‘Cross-Create’ design approach

Enthused by the excitement of the UX Concept, Chief Designer Tetsuo Miki and his team worked to create a road-going version of the new crossover. Guided by the three Lexus design principles of ‘YET philosophy’, ‘human-centred’ and ‘pioneering,’ they developed the ‘Cross-Create’ design approach which lead to the following creative statements:

1. Exterior YET Interior

Using the idea of ‘engawa’, Lexus designers worked to smooth the boundary between the exterior and interior of the car, connecting them with near seamless continuity. This approach is most evident in the UX driver’s seat, where one really senses the extremities of the car, making it much easier to drive and manoeuvre.

2. Rugged SUV YET Dynamic car

By combining distinctive features from two very different types of car — such as the rugged wheel arch mouldings of a 4x4 juxtaposed with a fin-shaped rear combination light inspired by the rear spoiler of a sports car - this unconventional mix of styles has resulted in a highly original crossover design.

3. Robust exterior YET Glamorous image

Here the combination of robust exterior and intricately sculpted bodywork gives the UX its unique identity, resulting in an exterior which exemplifies the Lexus brand.

4. Stylish YET Functional

Whilst wheel arch mouldings are generally installed to protect SUV bodywork from stone chips, they have a secondary function on the new UX: that of aerodynamically stabilizing the car. The same is true of the rear combination light and 17” alloy wheels, which both perform an aerodynamic function.

5. Driver-oriented YET Relaxing for passengers

Inside, the designers created a "driver-oriented" cockpit, while at the same time using central ornamentation to achieve a smooth connection between the driver and passenger areas.

6. Secure interior YET Open feel

Positioned low in the cabin, robust structural elements provide peace of mind. Waist upwards, the UX is designed to offer a class-leading field of vision and feeling of space.

Captivating crossover design with meticulously crafted surfaces

At the reveal of the production car, UX Chief Designer Tetsuo Miki said: “The new UX combines a compact body with the robust strength of a crossover vehicle. Its meticulously crafted surfaces express simple yet captivating design, as well as suggesting great strength and dynamism.”

Triple LED headlights and Lexus ‘signature grille’

Describing the front of the new UX, Miki continued: “Each headlight is made up of a compact pod of three LED units (optional) which, together with the arrowhead-shaped Daytime Running Lights and Lexus ‘signature grille’, give a distinctive character to the car’s face.”

Aerodynamic rear LED combination light

At the rear, the ultra-thin one-piece LED combination lamp is beautifully shaped. It also makes a surprisingly significant contribution to the car’s handling and performance. “When we tested the car, we could really feel how the aerodynamic fins integrated in the rear light gave the vehicle added stability,” smiles Miki.

With the first UX models arriving soon in Europe, the order books are open and you can already admire this stunning new crossover at your Lexus dealer.

Her goal was to create a new genre of crossover: one that is strong and stable, yet beautifully styled and agile.

Designed for people attracted to sharp design rather than boxy SUVs

Inspired by European luxury and Japanese design

Driven by urbanites who appreciate hatchback-like handling

At the recent UX launch in Stockholm, Lexus Europe spent time with Chika Kako discussing what inspired and motivated her and her team during the development of this amazing new Lexus:

Q. Alongside Chief Engineer, your visiting card says you are also Executive Vice President of Lexus’ brand division. What will be the UX’s role in growing the Lexus marque?

A. “In 2017 we launched the LC sports coupé to firmly position Lexus as a visionary and exciting luxury lifestyle brand. The LS flagship sedan and ES executive sedan consolidated this brand positioning. Now, with the first cars arriving early 2019, it’s the turn of the UX to create amazing experiences and welcome a new kind of customer to the Lexus brand.”

Q. How will the UX deliver these ‘amazing experiences’?

A. "Through emotions. I believe it's a car that really connects with people’s emotions. When potential customers see the UX on the street for the first time, we hope they’ll say: “Wow, what a cool car!” Once attracted by the design, we want them to experience the car’s imaginative technology, Japanese craftsmanship and agile performance.”

Q. How did market research influence the UX exterior design?

A. “We began research in the USA in 2013, by conducting an extensive series of focus groups and home visits with the owners of competing vehicles. We learned the interviewees were underwhelmed by conventional SUV looks. They also told us they wanted a crossover that drives like a hatchback. Interestingly, the findings from Europe, Japan and China were all very similar to those in the USA.”

Q. What inspired your team when designing the UX interior?

A. “One of my missions was to enhance the emotional appeal of a car’s interior. A vehicle's cabin is composed of components such as the instrument panel, seats, and trim, but it’s the intelligent orchestration of these parts that matters most. We used the principles of a Japanese architectural concept called ‘engawa’ where the boundaries between inside and outside are seamlessly connected and ‘kansei’ engineering which aims to create an emotional bond between the customer and product.”

Q. How much “Europe” is there in the new UX?

A. “During my time working in Europe, I developed an appreciation of luxury as not just about materials but also about experiences. In the past we tended to picture luxury in terms of expense and extravagance, “Art de Vivre” is about enjoying values other than material wealth. This was an idea we developed in designing the new UX.”

Q. What kind of people will buy the UX?

A. “The UX’s concept keywords—“Creative Urban Explorer” and “Art de Vivre”—give rise to a target customer with an active lifestyle who enjoys vibrant urban environments and embraces pursuits like travel, cycling and DIY. Expressed in more concrete terms, that customer may be a young professional working in a creative job like publishing, but with a keen interest in modern design and sustainable living.”

Q. Why is the UX not “just another crossover”?

A. “Right from the beginning we set out to give the UX a unique character: a car that embodies solid crossover appeal, while inheriting the precise and responsive feel of a Lexus. The result is a truly innovative vehicle that handles like a hatchback whilst delivering elegant performance combined with peace of mind.”

Q. Where does the name “UX” come from?

A. “The UX vehicle name is derived from the concept keywords - “Urban + X-over (crossover) = UX.” Coincidentally, the first letters of “Creative Urban Explorer” form the word CUE, meaning opportunity. I actually love CUE as a clear and succinct expression of the vehicle concept.”

Q. How does the UX meet the needs of women drivers?

A. “Today, it’s very common to see women driving crossovers in the city, many of them allured by the powerful presence and sporty design. At the same time some find the manoeuvrability of a high body crossover off-putting. I wanted to counter this perception by offering a car with exceptionally nimble handling, that is as easy to drive as a hatchback.”

Q. Finally, how did you motivate your team over the last 5 years?

A. (laughing) “With a plant, would you believe! We faced many changing demands and challenges working on the new UX. I wanted a motif to express this, so I named our team email list after a Japanese plant called the ‘Lantana’. Despite its fragile appearance, the Lantana is actually very hardy and not easily affected by changes in environment. Inspired by this plant, I knew my team would grow stronger and stronger throughout the project.”

2019 UX,2018 ux

PIONEERING AERODYNAMICS FOR THE NEW LEXUS UX CROSSOVER

<pp:caseid>306691</pp:caseid>

In its quest to reset the benchmark for crossover handling, Lexus has developed several ‘world-first’ aerodynamic innovations for the new UX:

• Distinctively shaped rear lights that stabilize in crosswinds

• Stepped wheel arch mouldings for improved handling

• Aerodynamic wheels that cool disc brakes and lower wind resistance

With the first cars arriving at European dealerships early next year, already journalists have praised the UX for its agile handling. But how did Lexus go about creating a crossover that is so dynamic to drive?

The answer lies with UX Chief Engineer Chika Kako and her team: “I wanted the UX to deliver the benefits of a conventional crossover – features like a higher seating position and better visibility - yet with the dynamic performance and agility of a hatchback,” explains Kako.

Inspired by Akio Toyoda’s determination that “every Lexus should be fun to drive”, Kako’s first tasked her team with engineering an incredibly rigid platform – the foundation for class-leading refinement and handling - with aluminium and composite body panels to save weight and lower the centre of gravity.

But this was only the beginning…

Advanced Lexus aerodynamics

In search of a significant breakthrough in handling characteristics, Chika Kako was able to call on the vast experience of the aerodynamic engineers responsible for landmark models like the ultra-high performance Lexus LFA supercar and Lexus ‘F’- line range. This collaboration led to the following three innovations:

1. Aero stabilising rear light

The rear combination light on the new UX features an advanced design that is not only eye-catching but also aerodynamically efficient. Fins are integrated into the light to reduce air pressure changes by about 16%, contributing to excellent rear stability during cornering as well as in side winds. For a distinctive look, a continuous single line of light is formed by 120 LEDs, tapering gently towards the centre and measuring just 3mm at the narrowest point.

2. Aerodynamic wheel arch mouldings

Wheel arch mouldings on crossovers typically protect the bodywork from gravel thrown up by the tyres. On the new UX, Lexus decided to give them a second function: “We incorporated a step at the top of the moulding that suppresses vertical

body waver during cornering, thus increasing stability and steering firmness,” explains Kako.

3. 17” aero ventilating wheels

Finished in metallic silver, the 17-inch aero ventilating wheels feature flaps on each side of the spokes and are a world first for Lexus. The flap shape is based on the

‘Gurney Flap’ used on the rear wing of Formula 1 race cars to regulate the airflow and increase downforce. This innovative new wheel design enables more confident driving by providing stable braking performance, increasing cooling efficiency, and reducing turbulence along the vehicle sides.

Tested in one of the world’s largest wind tunnels

“At Lexus we’re fortunate to have one of the world’s largest and most advanced aerodynamic facilities. Opened in March 2013, the wind tunnel loop is 22 metres high and 260 metres long,” says Kako.

“Its main function is to generate a steady flow of air over the car. For instance, when a vehicle like the new Lexus UX is cruising at 100 km/h, wind resistance accounts for as much as 70% of the forces affecting overall performance.”

As well as the above innovations, to reduce the UX’s drag coefficient - which in turn lowers fuel consumption, turbulence and wind noise - Lexus engineers perfected both a flush underbody and aerodynamic wing mirror inspired by the LC coupé.

Tuned by ‘Takumi’ master drivers

After wind tunnel and circuit testing was complete, the new UX was handed over to a team of Lexus ‘master drivers’ who fine-tune cars like a virtuoso would a musical instrument. Driving thousands of kilometres in all kinds of conditions, they did not rest until they had achieved the perfect balance between road and vehicle.

“With the order books now open and the first cars arriving in the showrooms in early 2019, I often think about the new UX owners. I really hope they enjoy their new Lexus. That is reward enough for me,” says Chief Engineer Chika Kako with a confident smile.

2019 UX,2019ux,2018ux,2018 ux

</pp:summary>

The new Lexus UX offers the brand’s innovative luxury and safety in a package that combines bold new design elements and ultra-efficient new powertrains. For many customers, the UX will not only be their first Lexus, but also their first luxury vehicle.

The UX name is derived from the design team’s guiding concept and describes the vehicle’s mission: Urban + X-over (crossover) = UX.

“The Lexus UX is designed for the modern urban explorer seeking a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on luxury driving,” said Chika Kako, executive vice president of Lexus International and chief engineer of the UX. “We designed the UX to appeal to buyers in their 30s who seek not only what is new and exciting, but what is also relevant to their lifestyles.”

Infused with dynamic attitude, the UX is engineered to deliver quick and engaging driving with a Lexus-smooth demeanour, making it a unique entry in the luxury compact crossover segment.

The UX is the first Lexus constructed using the new Global Architecture - Compact (GA-C) platform. A lightweight yet super-rigid structure, extremely low centre of gravity and refined suspension tuning endow the UX with exemplary handling agility and ride comfort, along with a distinctive driving personality.

“I wanted to positively overturn the image of a crossover with a high body that requires careful manoeuvring, and offer a car with nimble performance and excellent manoeuvrability that makes it as easy to drive as a sedan,” said Chief Engineer Kako.

The UX is available in two versions: the UX 250h with a fourth-generation self-charging hybrid powertrain featuring a new high-efficiency 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine engineered specifically for this platform, and the UX 200 where the 2.0-litre petrol engine is coupled with a new Direct-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (D-CVT).

EUROPE – A KEY MARKET FOR THE NEW LEXUS UX

The European market offers great potential for the new Lexus UX, a region in which customers are increasingly looking for premium quality alternatives to conventional sedans, wagons and hatchbacks that better suit modern lifestyles. Although this has led to a wealth of choice in the growing compact crossover / SUV segment, the UX stands apart from the competition as more distinctive, stylish player with strong dynamic appeal and the unique benefit of Lexus’ clean and efficient self-charging hybrid technology.

In essence the UX is a new genre of crossover, an “urban explorer” that offers a new take on what luxury means for today’s motorists. Alongside the well-established CT hatchback, it will take its place as a gateway model for Lexus and will play a key role in helping the company achieve its target of 100,000 annual sales in Europe* by 2020. Its self-charging hybrid technology has growing appeal, as the market moves away from diesel power to embrace alternative, electrified powertrains.

The UX will have broad appeal in Europe, particularly for customers with young families who want the flexibility of a crossover, but also a car that’s as agile to drive around town as a hatchback. In this regard the UX will be the ideal partner for day-to-day travelling as well as journeys to discover new places and enjoy new experiences. At the same time, the UX will be a prime choice for downsizing households where the children have grown up, and for couples whose travel often mixes business with leisure.

As Lexus’ first compact crossover, the UX joins its larger NX and RX stable mates to complete a powerful European SUV and crossover range that fully expresses the pillars on which the brand has been transformed: brave design, exhilarating performance, imaginative technology and takumi superior craftsmanship.

*Lexus Europe sales include the European Union countries, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, as well as the following Eastern markets: Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Caucasus region, Turkey and Israel.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND AERODYNAMICS

Lexus designers created an overall design theme combining strength with refinement, stylish yet functional.

The spindle grille, though sharing its basic shape with other Lexus models, is unique to the UX. It features a new mesh pattern with individual elements that gradually change in shape as they radiate out from the central Lexus emblem. The grille creates an intriguing three-dimensional appearance that appears to change with the viewing angle.

The headlamp design completes the UX’s face, giving it a determined, confident gaze. Daytime running lights are arranged in an arrowhead motif above the headlights, emphasizing the Lexus L-shaped lighting signature. These appear like brows above the standard single-projector dual-beam LED headlights or the optional ultra-small 3-projector LED units.

The vehicle’s basic form flows out from the lines of the spindle grille to envelop the cabin. Crisp, prominent sculpted surfaces and dramatically flared front and rear wings reflect strength, while an aerodynamic profile, large wheels pushed to the corners and a bold front fascia create the agile stance.

The wheel arch mouldings that protect the body from gravel thrown up by the tyres, use airflow over their edges to reduce turbulence and lift, contributing to the vehicle’s stability.

A similar contribution is made by the rear combination lamps. The Aero Stabilising Blade Lights begin at the top of the rear wings and span the rear of the vehicle. By guiding airflow around the rear of the UX, this design also reduces turbulence and lift, contributing to vehicle stability when cornering and driving in crosswinds.

The full-width lights project a distinctive night-time signature formed by a sequence of 120 LEDs and tapering toward the centre, measuring just 3mm thick at its narrowest point. A wing-type spoiler at the rear edge of the roof, along with a flat underbody, contribute to vehicle quietness and fuel efficiency.

Takumi (Japanese for “artisan”) modellers worked with design and engineering to refine all exterior surfaces of the UX. Their work was crucial to refining surfaces down to the 0.01 mm level, pushing the boundaries for what could be produced in the body-stamping presses.

The standard 5-spoke 17x6.5-inch aluminium alloy aero ventilating wheels feature Gurney flaps along the spoke edges designed to reduce wind resistance while also increasing the airflow to cool the disc brakes.

The design pulls air from the inside of the wheel, while the air flow on the outer side of the vehicle is regulated to follow the wheel surface. The aero wheels are available in a choice of silver metallic and dark grey metallic colours. The UX also offers (non-aero) 18-inch aluminium wheel designs including exclusive F SPORT-specific wheels.

COLOURS AS UNIQUE AS THE UX

The Lexus UX is offered in a total of 13 exterior colours that accentuate the vehicle’s bold lines.

Three exclusive new colours were developed for the UX: Blazing Carnelian creates vividness and a sense of depth using a multi-layer painting process that combines a red colour base layer with a yellow interference mica layer.

Terrane Khaki offers a strong contrast between bright highlights and dark, calm shades. The mica particles have been enlarged as much as possible without creating colour unevenness, achieving high brilliance while expressing toughness.

Celestial Blue creates a solid blue colour with glass flakes that sparkle in sunlight.

INTERIOR DESIGN: A NEW KIND OF LEXUS LUXURY

Lexus designed the UX cabin to evoke the feel of a dynamic, luxury sedan, but with the higher seating position and versatility desired in a crossover. The materials and workmanship are pure Lexus, combining Japanese traditions in craftsmanship and hospitality with innovative production techniques.

At the same time, the UX interior design also conveys a sense of security. As one example, the form of the interior door shoulders evokes a robust frame, expressing a secure feeling inside the vehicle.

Inspired by a traditional Japanese concept that blurs the boundary between a home’s exterior and interior, designers created a feeling of seamless continuity inside the UX. From the driver’s seat, the upper section of the instrument panel appears to extend out beyond the windshield into the wings. The result gives the driver an excellent field of vision and a clear sense of the vehicle’s dimensions and tire placement. When viewed from outside the vehicle, the hood appears to connect directly to the instrument panel through the windshield.

Entering and exiting the UX is made easier through optimal placing of the hip-point and unique shaping of the seat cushion. The human-centred approach shows clearly in the instrument panel’s low, unobtrusive design and slim A-pillar mouldings, which are shaped to improve visibility. Even with a higher seating position than a standard passenger car, the reduction in distance between the hip and heel points gives the UX driver a feeling of being closer to the road than in a conventional SUV.

Typical of Lexus, the UX offers a quiet driving experience, thanks to the high-strength structure and optimal placement of specially designed sound- absorbing and insulating materials throughout the body. Also in typical Lexus fashion, engineers traced noises to their sources to keep them out of the cabin. Even the sound of water being thrown by the tyres is reduced.

“SEAT-IN-CONTROL” CONCEPT

The UX makes the driver feel more in touch with the road thanks to a “seat-in-control” concept. Critical vehicle functions are grouped around the driver’s side of the cabin, and the seatback shape allows the driver to operate them while maintaining a comfortable, natural posture.

The UX offers 6-way manual or 8-way power adjustable front seats, the latter with adjustable lumbar support for the driver. Front seat cushions use springs and foam specially designed to gently envelop occupants and to disperse pressure under the occupant’s sciatic area.

Lexus luxury extends throughout the UX cabin. The three-spoke steering wheel and analogue clock come from the Lexus LS, for example, and Lexus Climate Concierge, as used in other Lexus models, automatically links heating and cooling airflow with the heated and ventilated seats to optimise interior temperature comfort. Renowned Lexus attention to detail is also evident in a headliner design that eliminates distracting shadows at the windshield header, as well as control switches with a signature “Lexus feel.”

LUXURIOUS NEW FINISHES

From its inception, Lexus has drawn on Japanese traditions in craftsmanship and hospitality to infuse its vehicles with a unique sense of contemporary luxury. Lexus adapted this approach to the UX to appeal especially to younger customers experiencing their first luxury vehicle.

Chief Engineer Kako drew on her extensive experience in materials development and time spent working in Europe to help define the UX interior’s appearance and quality. The result is an uncluttered “less is more” approach that makes the UX feel more inviting and accessible.

“When it comes to determining whether an interior is good or bad, controlling the overall balance between the continuity, unity and contrast is more important than the relative specifications of individual components,” she said.

One example is an optional leather upholstery finish inspired by sashiko, a customary Japanese stitching technique that is also used in the making of judo and kendo martial arts uniforms. It’s combined with a “calculated art” perforation pattern on the lower part of the seat that is derived from mathematical curves and gradations in perfect alignment.

The Lexus UX offers a wide choice of interior colour combinations, each of which conveys a specific mood and accentuates the premium design. The seating is available in fabric, leather or a combination of fabric and Tahara leather. The standard models offer a choice of five colours, including Cobalt, Black, White Ash, Rich Cream and Ochre. In addition to Black, the F SPORT also offers exclusive Flare Red and White seat colours.

The sweeping instrument panel and cabin trim offer a choice of two different grain patterns and four colours. In a Lexus first, the UX offers a new trim finish inspired by Japanese paper, known as washi. It’s common in traditional Japanese homes and it evokes a calm and warm feeling. A leather-like grain finish, also featured in the Lexus LC coupe and LS sedan, is also available.

INTUITIVE CONTROLS AND CLEAR DISPLAYS

The UX instrument panel design combines unique Lexus traits and intuitive technology. A 7-in. TFT LCD display meter digitally creates realistic, analogue gauges in a three-dimensional space.

An available head-up display underscores the Lexus UX’s high-tech feel while putting vital vehicle information in the driver’s line of sight. The large colour display projects the information to a virtual “screen” 2.5m (8 ft.) in front of the driver, making it easier to focus on the display as well as objects in front of the vehicle. The bright, high-contrast display is easy to see in daylight and in snowy conditions.

The Lexus Remote Touch Interface (RTI) with haptic interface in the UX is designed to feel as familiar to use as a smartphone. The RTI utilises intuitive operations, such as double tapping and flicking, to mimic common phone gestures. Frameless construction eliminates edges, and a special coating on the touch pad surface lets fingers easily slide over it while minimizing the appearance of fingerprints. The touchpad can recognize Roman block letters when typing a search name. Touchpad surface haptic vibrations indicates to the user when the cursor is moved, making it easier to align the cursor with the desired function button.

A switch at the base of the touch pad can call up an operation screen with related functions, such as air conditioning and navigation, enabling easier access without going through menus. In a unique touch of high-tech elegance, the Lexus logo on the pad surface is backlit at night.

IMAGINATIVE TECHNOLOGY

Lexus designers created a refined cabin atmosphere, for instance by integrating subtle LED cabin lighting. White LEDs illuminate the front foot wells, glovebox, and console switches and also serve as the dome light, map lights and cargo area light.

As another example, each of the UX’s air vents uses a new single-knob control for airflow direction and volume. By combining the two functions in a single control, the air passages of each vent could be made larger, improving airflow while reducing noise.

Luxury-grade models feature illuminated vent controls with distinctive LED light source wirelessly powered by electromagnetic resonance of two adjacent coils vibrating at the same frequency. Using the same design principle as the Lexus LC’s rear combination lamps, the vent control LEDs use mirror optics to create the effect of floating lighting depth, even though the light element is just 3mm thick.

VERSATILITY THROUGH THOUGHTFUL PACKAGING

The UX package is suited to making urban exploring easier. A 2640mm (103.9-in.) wheelbase contributes to a smooth, stable ride and cabin roominess. The 4495mm (177-in.) length and best-in segment 10.4m (34-ft) curb-to-curb turning diameter help make the Lexus UX easy to manoeuvre and convenient to park.

Getting in and out is made easier through several factors including optimal placing of the hip-point, a cut-off profile for the rocker panel below the doors and the shape of the seat cushion. For interior storage, the UX offers the largest console box in its class.

An available hands-free power rear gate makes loading the UX more convenient, and solid aluminium roof rails allow installation of a variety of accessory carriers.

Depending on model configuration, tyres and markets, the UX features a repair kit, run-flat tyres or a spare tire. The newly-developed 2nd generation run-flat tyres are quieter and more comfortable, while now allowing the vehicle to travel with a flat tire at speeds up to 80 km/h (50 mph) for up to 160 km (99 miles).

IMMERSIVE TECHNOLOGY AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

The Lexus UX models offer the latest in the brand’s multimedia and navigation technology. A 7-inch EMV (Electro Multi Vision) display is standard, and a 10.25-in. EMV display is used with the available Lexus Navigation system.

The standard Lexus Premium Sound System can play back the highest-resolution digital audio formats (WAV, FLAC, ALAC, and OGG Orbis) from a USB device, conveying more musical data than a CD. Dual rear-seat USB ports enable passengers to use and recharge their smartphones or tablets.

The standard 6-speaker system and available 8-speaker upgrade system use bamboo charcoal speaker diaphragms to reduce mass and deliver natural-sounding voices and improved mid-range sound. Both systems create a more lifelike soundstage by using tweeters mounted at the sides of the instrument panel, and reflecting sound off the windshield. The 8-speaker system adds a centre-dash tweeter, a subwoofer mounted in the luggage area and a more powerful amplifier.

The available Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System – a segment exclusive – uses a 13-speaker array, low-distortion 668W Class D 8-channel amplifier, Quantum Logic Surround Sound and ClariFi™ 2.0 technology to deliver an immersive concert-like sound experience in the UX.

A SOLID STRUCTURE TO BUILD ON

Lexus instilled the UX with an outstanding combination of handling agility and smooth, quiet ride comfort that urban customers will find pleasing. Key to achieving that balance is building the UX around the high-strength GA-C global architecture platform. Extensive use of high-tensile steel, high-strength adhesives and Laser Screw Welding results in a highly rigid structure, an essential foundation for achieving dynamic handling and luxurious ride comfort.

By using aluminium for the side doors, wings and hood and composite materials for the tailgate, the UX has the lowest centre of gravity of any vehicle in its class (594mm / 23.4 in.). As a result, the UX delivers a secure, agile feeling normally associated with lower dynamic hatches. A unique ring structure around the hatch opening and behind the rear seats increases torsional rigidity to enhance crash performance, improve handling and reduce noise and vibration.

The MacPherson strut front suspension and multilink rear suspension with trailing arms, both mounted to subframes, are specially tuned to deliver a combination of agility and comfort over well-worn urban street surfaces. Carefully refined details such as the quality of the damper oil, oil seals and friction control in the shock absorbers make a significant positive impact on ride quality.

An upper strut brace increases torsional rigidity of the engine bay, and the steering rack bolts directly to the subframe without rubber bushings for improved steering feel.

Active Cornering Assist (ACA), a function integrated with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), helps the vehicle trace the driver’s desired line through a turn by applying some brake control on the inside wheels, suppressing the tendency to understeer. As a result, the UX drives through corners with greater precision while maintaining stability.

A SUSPENSION THAT ADAPTS TO YOUR NEEDS

The latest version of Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which debuted on the flagship LC Coupe, is available for the UX F SPORT and Luxury grades. The new AVS system decreases body roll when cornering and enhances ride comfort over bumpy urban streets.

AVS uses linear control solenoids to vary the amounts of shock fluid to bypass the shock absorber’s piston assembly. Thus, the system can vary suspension damping through 650 levels, making its operation transparent to the vehicle occupants.

Based on signal inputs from the steering, yaw rate and linear G sensors, AVS continually adjusts damping force to minimize body roll in cornering while maintaining optimum tire contact and ride comfort on all surfaces. Damping force is reduced at low speeds and increased at high speeds. Integrated functions including Roll Posture Control, Anti-pitch Control, Repercussion Control and Roughness Sensing Control adapt AVS performance to all road surfaces and driving dynamics.

The driver can set damping performance using the Drive Select controller. When Eco, Normal or Sport S mode is selected, or when Custom mode is selected with the chassis setting in NORMAL, the damping force remains unchanged to maintain an optimal balance of ride comfort, steering response and a flat ride.

By selecting Sport S+, or Custom mode with the chassis setting in SPORT, the damping force control mode switches to firmer dampers settings to provide the most dynamic driving feel.

In addition, using Pre-Collision System Cooperative Control, AVS can instantly increase damping force to limit vehicle pitch or roll when the driving support computer judges that there is a possibility of rapid driver input to avoid a collision. VSC Cooperative Control applies appropriate damping in response to vehicle side-skid and changes in the road surface friction, helping to maintain the effectiveness of VSC.

SHARP STEERING AND MULTIPLE WHEEL OPTIONS

An Electric Power Steering system with a new compact and highly rigid column assist motor delivers handling with crisp, immediate response to driver inputs, and provides excellent steering feel.

A newly developed electric tilt and telescopic steering column is available for UX models equipped with power-adjustable front seats. In addition, on models with memory function, ingress and egress are made easier with the auto away / auto return controls linked to the driver’s seat belt and the engine start-stop switch or hybrid power switch. Using the switch, the tilt and telescopic motors can adjust the steering wheel up and down or forward and back through 40mm ranges.

Standard 17 x 6.5-inch alloy aero ventilating wheels feature 215/60R17 tyres. The optional 18-inch alloy wheels get 225/50RF18 95V run-flat tyres. F SPORT models are available with performance summer tyres.

UX 250h: NEW-GENERATION LEXUS HYBRID DRIVE

The UX 250h is equipped with a new-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain. With 178 PS total system output, the UX 250h combines high fuel efficiency with a smooth, natural and responsive driving experience.

The UX’s new 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine is one of the most efficient engines in its class, thanks to revolutionary laser-clad intake valve seats with an all-new intake port profile, high compression ratio (13:1), D4-S fuel injection combining direct and secondary port injectors to achieve high-speed combustion. VVT-iE intelligent variable valve-timing with an electric actuator on the intake side also enhances drivability while reducing emissions.

A continuously variable capacity oil pump and a variable cooling system with an electric water pump contribute to ultra-low internal friction, further optimising engine performance and fuel efficiency. The system also ensures quicker cabin heating on cold days and quicker cool-down when the air conditioner is used.

Exhaust heat recirculation enables quick engine warm-up to reduce emissions, while a gasoline particulate filter provides high-efficiency particulate material removal to conform to EURO6d PN (particulate number) regulations.

The UX’ hybrid system couples this new engine with two electric motor generators in a new-generation hybrid transaxle that is more compact, lighter and has less internal friction than previous Lexus hybrid systems. The Power Control Unit (PCU) is more powerful yet 20% smaller and 10% lighter.

Optimising the level of electric motor assistance and engine rpm produces a linear acceleration feel without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronised with vehicle speed to create an immediate and continuous acceleration feel.

The new transaxle mounts the electric motor generators (MG1 and MG2) coaxially rather than in-line. The resulting smaller and lighter package reduces frictional losses by 25%. In addition, MG2 is now a higher-speed motor, yielding better performance and efficiency.

The Sequential Shiftmatic feature delivers responsive engine braking force in six steps with a shift feel similar to a manual transmission, using steering wheel paddle shift switches or the S position on the shift lever.

The speed at which the hybrid system can shut off the petrol engine, such as when driving on long downward slopes, has been raised to 115 km/h (71 mph).

The new compact and lightweight nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery and compact cooling system are located below the rear seat, which supports the vehicle’s low centre of gravity.

E-FOUR ALL WHEEL DRIVE

The UX 250h is available with either front-wheel drive or E-Four electric all-wheel drive.

The E-Four all-wheel drive system uses a separate, dedicated electric motor generator integrated into the rear differential. Power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimised by the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces. E-Four provides stable driving on uphill slopes or snow-covered roads with lower fuel consumption than a conventional all-wheel drive system that employs a power split device and driveshaft. E-Four does more than assist traction in slippery conditions: The system can actively improve stability by adjusting rear-wheel power to help correct an over- or understeer condition.

UX 200: INNOVATIVE TRANSMISSION MEETS ULTRA EFFICIENT ENGINE

The UX 200 is equipped with the same 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine as the UX 250h.

At 171 PS, the UX 200 engine offers output similar to some competitors’ lower capacity turbo engines, but with less complexity, less underhood heat and lower powerplant weight for better vehicle balance. The engine produces 205 Nm of peak torque.

The new Direct-Shift-Continuously Variable Transmission (D-CVT) combines the smooth, fuel-efficient performance of a continuously variable transmission with a more direct driving feel. The key to its distinct performance feel is a mechanical gearset that is used to start from a stand-still and accelerate before handing off to the continuously variable transmission traditional pulley system.

The result is quicker, more linear initial acceleration, while maintaining the benefits of a continuously variable transmission at mid- and higher speeds. Also, because the fixed-ratio first gear reduces the load on the belt and pulleys mechanism for start-off and low-speed driving, the pulley can be made smaller and lighter while providing a wider range of gear ratios. The result is quicker ratio changes during acceleration and an overall ratio spread that maximises fuel efficiency.

Under strong acceleration, the D-CVT can freely adjust the transmission ratio to simulate gear changes like a multi-gear automatic transmission. Synchronisation of the increasing engine revs and vehicle speed provides a linear acceleration feel.

DRIVE MODE SELECT

Both the UX 200 and UX 250h Hybrid are equipped with Lexus Drive Mode Select, which allows the driver to tailor the driving experience by selecting from three different drive modes.

Normal mode provides an optimal balance between driving performance and fuel efficiency; ECO mode maximises fuel savings across all driving conditions by smoothing the throttle response, and by moderating air conditioning operation; Sport Mode delivers quicker throttle response and increased power steering feel.

In Luxury and F SPORT models equipped with AVS, five different driving modes are available: normal, ECO, Sport S, Sport S+, and custom.

SAFETY TECHNOLOGY AND DRIVER ASSIST

The UX models are equipped with eight airbags: driver and front passenger airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags; driver and front passenger seat-mounted side impact airbags and front to rear side curtain airbags.

The Lexus Safety System+ includes All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Road Sign Assist (RSA), Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) and Intelligent High-Beam headlamps/Automatic High Beam (AHB).

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) couples with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The system can operate relative to a vehicle ahead that is traveling 10 to 180 km/h (7 to 110 mph). Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Road Sign Assist (RSA) can quickly reset the vehicle speed setting in accordance with the speed limit information recognized by RSA.

PCS uses camera-based detection to recognize pedestrians in low light, and its radar capability has been extended to enable detection of cyclists during the day. (In markets where PCS is not available, the UX comes standard with conventional cruise control.)

The UX is capable of low-speed following, including stop-and-go traffic, up to speeds of about 30 km/h (18 mph).. Thus, the UX driver enjoys more relaxed driving in situations that can be normally annoying and fatiguing, while also gaining a measure of safety.

Lane Tracing Assist uses the Electric Power Steering motor to aid the drive in keeping the vehicle centred in its lane. Lane Departure Alert detects not only yellow or white traffic lanes, but also the sides of the road.

Other available safety systems include Parking Support Alert that can detect crossing vehicles from the sides and static vehicles in front of or behind the UX when parking over a broader range of conditions than previous clearance sonar or rear cross traffic systems, and uses digital camera images on the centre display along with a beeper to alert the driver to potential risks.

A related Parking Support Brake system adds active drive force (throttle) and braking control to audible and visual warnings to reduce the possibility of contact with moving objects ahead or behind the UX when parking.

UX F SPORT

The F SPORT package is available for both the UX 200 and UX 250h.

The F SPORT transformation includes an exclusive grille design featuring a mesh-pattern created by individual L-shaped pieces. The exclusive F SPORT front bumper features large fog lamp bezels with L-shaped chrome mouldings and the same mesh pattern as the grille. A revised rear bumper and jet-black trim on the front and rear mouldings complete the F SPORT look.

Two of the available 13 exterior colours, White Nova and Heat Blue, are exclusive to the F SPORT.

F SPORT-exclusive interior features include front sports seats made with an integrated-foaming technique first developed for Lexus F models, which helps the seats conform to the occupant’s body. With this process, the upholstery is set into the mould and is then filled with foam to complete the seat in a single process. The special 8-way power-adjustable F SPORT front seats feature lumbar adjustment, as well as manual forward/backward adjustment for the headrests.

The F SPORT features a larger 8-in. TFT LCD display that varies depending on the powertrain (petrol or hybrid) and the selected drive mode. For the F SPORT only, the movable meter ring, which originated in the Lexus LFA supercar and is also featured in the LC premium coupe, allows displayed content to be easily changed. Pushing a switch on the steering wheel moves the ring to the right and enlarges the multi-information display.

A leather-covered F SPORT steering wheel, leather-trimmed shift knob, aluminium footrest and aluminium pedals are also part of the package.

The UX F SPORT can be equipped with a UX tailored version of the high response Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system that debuted on the Lexus LC and LS flagship models. The system increases damping force to minimize roll when cornering or changing lanes and reduces damping force in straight line driving to preserve ride quality.

Exclusive F SPORT suspension tuning includes specific springs and stabiliser bars, plus a rear performance damper for a more refined ride. The 18-inch, five twin-spoke aluminium alloy wheels, which are unique to the F SPORT, are even more rigid than standard UX wheels, contributing to responsiveness and handling agility.

The UX F SPORT driving experience can be further enhanced with Active Sound Control (ASC), which generates the aural effect of up- and down-shifts like those of a geared automatic transmission. An additional Sonic Interaction Design (SID) function adjusts the sound the vehicle makes when driving in Sport S+ mode (S+ Sound).

UX,2018 ux,paris18

Exceptional body rigidity and low centre of gravity for superior agility

Available as self-charging hybrid UX 250h and petrol UX 200

</pp:summary>

An additional Sonic Interaction Design (SID) function adjusts the sound the vehicle makes when driving in Sport S+ mode (S+ Sound).

tag,UX,2018 ux

Lexus hosts the world debut of the new UX at the 2018 Geneva Motor show, a free-spirited crossover crafted expressly for the modern urban explorer who seeks a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on a luxury lifestyle.

Chika Kako, Chief Engineer of the UX said: “Right from the start, I focused on the target customer – mid-30s, millennials, men and women – and tried to understand how they would expect a premium compact vehicle to change their lives and enable new experiences. That’s what led us to the basic vehicle concept for the UX of Creative Urban Explorer – a new genre of crossover.

“Design is still the main purchase reason for every car, it is the design that promises to the customer what the car can deliver. With the UX the design team have created a style which delivers the strong safe feeling that sets crossovers apart from hatchbacks, but combined it with a very dynamic dimension.

“We also focused on giving the UX a distinctive driving feel that would resonate with the customer. I wanted to overturn the image of a crossover with a high body that requires careful manoeuvring and offer a car with nimble performance and excellent manoeuvrability that make it as easy to drive as a hatchback.”

The UX is a new gateway vehicle for Lexus, it is rich in the qualities that define the brand: brave design, superior craftsmanship, exhilarating performance and imaginative technology.

Led by Chief Engineer Kako and Chief Designer Tetsuo Miki, the development teams have worked closely to produce a car in which the exterior and interior appear almost seamlessly linked. Powerful bodywork, notable for its impressively flared front and rear wings, clothes a cabin that provides a driver-focused cockpit and an open, relaxing space for passengers. While still offering a commanding view from the steering wheel, the UX offers a driving position that makes the crossover feel more like a responsive hatchback to drive, rather than an SUV.

The UX further marks a series of technical innovations, including the first use of the new global architecture platform named GA-C, which delivers fundamental high structural rigidity and a low centre of gravity, thus securing excellent ride quality and stability. New powertrains are also deployed for the first time: a new 2.0-litre petrol engine that reaps the performance and fuel economy benefits of high thermal efficiency; and a new mid-power, fourth generation self-charging hybrid system.

BRAVE DESIGN

Lexus has produced a design for the UX that expresses the sense of security that is expected of a crossover, but which equally communicates agility and a fun-to-drive quality with sleek, attractively condensed appearance. The result is a model with a unique identity in its segment that makes a strong and appealing design statement. There was close collaboration among all team members, resulting in a harmonious shape that almost seamlessly links the inside and outside of the car.”

Exterior design

The aim for the UX was not to conform to the established, solid crossover look, but to achieve a compact design that is both strong and stylish, breaking with the conventions of the segment to deliver something more distinctive and dynamic.

This design approach can be seen at work in the way the front and rear wings flare strongly outwards in relation to the car’s basic form, which flows out from the lines of the spindle grille to envelop the cabin. The meticulously formed exterior surfaces are simple but captivating, expressing strength and dynamism.

At the front, the arrangement of the headlights and the spindle grille are incorporated into a deep, strong shape created by the hood and bumper to generate a sense of security. At the rear, a condensed styling treatment contrasts sharply with the flared wings to emphasise the UX’s dynamic and strong crossover qualities.

Details include daytime running lights, arranged in an arrowhead motif above the headlights to emphasise the Lexus L-shaped illumination signature. The spindle grille has a new block-shape mesh pattern with individual elements that gradually change in shape as they radiate out from the central Lexus emblem, giving a three-dimensional look that changes according to the angle of view.

The rear combination lamps have an original and advanced design that is not only eye-catching but also aerodynamically efficient while improving vehicle handling. The right and left units are connected by a continuous, single line of light across the back door to give the UX’s rear a unique appearance. Formed by a sequence of 120 LEDs, this tapers gently towards the centre, measuring just 3mm thick at its narrowest point. This design is set to become a world-first Lexus signature feature.

Four new aluminium wheel designs have been produced for the UX, with 17 and 18-inch diameters. The five-spoke 17-inch wheels have a world-first aerodynamic design, details of which are given in the Imaginative Technology section below.

Dimensions and packaging

The UX measures 4,495mm long, 1,520mm high and 1,840mm wide and has a 2,640mm wheelbase. An 870mm couple distance ensures ample space for rear seat passengers, while the load area is a generous 791mm long.

The car’s proportions allow for excellent manoeuvrability, with a best-in segment 5.2m turning radius. For the driver, a reduced distance between the hip and heel points gives the feel of driving a hatchback rather than an SUV-type vehicle.

Interior design

The interior of a car is the place where the driver and the car connect. As such, the designers sought to eliminate the boundary between exterior and interior, creating a seamless continuity. The effect gives the driver an excellent field of vision with a clear sense of the vehicle’s body dimensions. This concept is most evident from the driver’s seat, where the upper section of the instrument panel appears to extend out beyond the windscreen. Conversely, seen from outside, the hood looks as though it connects directly to the instrument panel. This is inspired by a traditional Japanese concept which blurs the boundary between the inside and outside of a house.

The human-centred approach extends to the design of the UX’s interior, with a “seat-in-control” concept that focuses operation of all the principal vehicle functions around the driver’s side of the cabin.

At the same time, this helps create a more relaxing atmosphere around the passenger space. The instrument panel has a low, unobtrusive design and the slim A-pillar mouldings have been shaped to improve visibility and give the kind of commanding outward view that is expected of a crossover.

Chief Engineer Kako has drawn on her earlier experience in materials development and time spent working in Europe to help define the quality and appearance of the interior, in particular applying an uncluttered “less is more” approach to achieve the desired effect.

She explained: “In the course of (my earlier) work, I learned that even if the elements that make up the interior, such as the seats, instrument panel and ornamentation, are all made to a high specification, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the overall look will give an elegant impression. When it comes to determining whether an interior is good or bad, controlling the overall balance between the continuity, unity and contrast is more important than the relative specifications of individual components.”

The human-centred design thinking included paying particular attention to the appearance and ease of use of the centre console that integrates audio switches into a palm rest. The seatback shape has been defined to make operation of controls possible while maintaining a comfortable, natural posture.

Getting in and out of the vehicle has been made easier and more comfortable through optimal placing of the hip-point, a cut-off profile for the rocker panel below the doors and shaping of the seat cushion.

SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

The superior craftsmanship that defines Lexus vehicles is evident both in the overall high build quality of the new UX – built at Lexus’ Kyushu factory, home also to production of the CT, NX and RX models - and in fine detailing, such as the application of different, unique finishes in the cabin.

Sashiko leather quilting

The smooth leather upholstery available for the UX is inspired by sashiko, a traditional Japanese quilting technique that is also used in the making of judo and kendo martial arts uniforms. The quilted leather is decorated with new perforation patterns that form mathematical curves and gradations in perfect alignment, enhancing the appearance of the seats.

Ornamentation inspired by Japanese paper grain

The UX’s sweeping instrument panel covers a large area, connecting the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle. This provides an opportunity to accentuate the atmosphere of the cabin using fine-quality ornamentation, with a choice of two grain patterns and four colours.

The UX is the first Lexus model to offer a new trim grain finish that’s inspired by the grain of Japanese paper, known as washi, familiar in traditional Japanese homes. Created using slush-moulding and a carefully chosen surface finish, it evokes a calm and warm feeling.

A leather grain finish is also available, shared with the LC coupe and LS flagship sedan and building a consistency of quality across the Lexus brand.

EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE

The UX has been engineered to deliver “elegant performance with peace of mind” consistent in all Lexus models. The foundation is the new global architecture platform named GA-C, used for the first time in a Lexus.

Two new powertrains make their debut: a new, fourth generation self-charging hybrid system with 178 DIN hp/131kW[1] and the choice of front wheel drive or E-Four in the UX 250h; and a new 2.0-litre petrol engine with high thermal efficiency, available with a new Direct Shift continuously variable transmission in the UX 200.

Suspension, steering and tyres have also all been developed to support Lexus’ dynamic and performance ambitions for the UX.

First use of new global architecture platform named GA-C

The UX is the first Lexus to be constructed using the new global architecture platform named GA-C, the foundation for the car’s dynamic performance. Its development focused on giving the UX nimble and instant response to the driver’s inputs, while communicating a sense of stability and safety.

The platform allowed for an increase in rigidity, including a high-tensile and ring structure around the rear and back door openings. Highly rigid adhesive and Laser Screw Welding have been used in key locations, greatly enhancing overall rigidity.

Low centre of gravity

The UX has the lowest centre of gravity of any vehicle in its class, thanks to the design of the GA-C platform. This characteristic, central to the car’s fine ride and handling quality, is also supported by weight-saving measures in the body construction, including the use of lightweight aluminium for the side doors, fenders and hood, as well as a resin material for the back door.

Suspension and steering

MacPherson strut front suspension and a double wishbone arrangement at the rear have been designed and tuned to promote ride comfort and sharp response. Special attention has been paid to shock absorber performance and the quality of the damper oil, oil seals and friction control.

An Electric Power Steering system with a new compact and highly rigid column assist has been adopted for the UX, with a larger diameter column shaft. This supports handling with crisp, immediate response to driver inputs, with good steering feel.

UX 250h with fourth generation self-charging hybrid powertrain

The Lexus UX 250h will also use a new fourth generation hybrid electric system that features a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). It will be available both with front-wheel drive and with Lexus’ E-Four.

The new engine is notable for its high thermal efficiency and output, with provisional performance figures for the full hybrid self-charging system (engine and electric motor combined anticipating a maximum 178 DIN hp/131kW).

The powertrain development programme focused not just on outstanding fuel economy, but also on a high level of driving appeal. Particular efforts were made to reduce any “rubber band” effect in the operation of the hybrid system and transmission, by optimising the level of electric motor assistance and engine rpm to generate a linear acceleration feel without the engine running at high revs. Engine rpm are synchronised with the increase in vehicle speed to create an immediate and continuous acceleration feel, responding to the driver’s intentions and creating a pleasant driving feel.

New hybrid transaxle, power control unit and battery

The system has a compact and lightweight new transaxle and Power Control Unit, designed to minimise power losses through heat and friction.

A new nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery is used with a revised construction and more compact cooling system that allows for smaller dimensions overall. This allows the battery to be located below the rear seat, minimising intrusion in the load space and supporting the UX’s low centre of gravity.

E-Four

The E-Four system gives the UX 250h all-wheel drive capability by placing an additional electric motor on the rear axle. Power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimised when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces. When a loss of front-wheel grip is detected, the amount of power that can be directed to the rear of the car has been increased from 60 to around 80 per cent, at speeds up to 70km/h, contributing to excellent handling stability.

UX 200 with new 2.0-litre petrol engine

The UX 200 is powered by a new 2.0-litre petrol engine, engineered to provide a high level of dynamic and environmental performance with excellent fuel economy. The in-line four-cylinder unit uses high-speed combustion to achieve enhanced thermal efficiency.

Features which enable this across a wide range of driving scenarios include multi-hole direct fuel injectors, a continuously variable capacity oil pump, a variable cooling system and VVT-iE intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side. The result is a maximum thermal efficiency of around 40% - a best-in-class level for a passenger vehicle engine.

Direct Shift-CVT

The new 2.0-litre engine featured in the UX 200 is matched to Lexus’ first Direct Shift-CVT, engineered to provide the smooth, fuel-efficient performance of a conventional continuously variable transmission, but with a direct driving feel.

A conventional system uses two pulleys, connected by a belt, that can change their radius seamlessly, and thus change the effective gear ratio, without any “step” effect.

The new Direct Shift-CVT has additional gears to achieve acceleration at start-up like a manual transmission. This gives the smooth acceleration of a CVT, but with a direct acceleration feel.

In addition, this use of gears for acceleration from start-up reduces the need for the CVT’s pulleys and belt mechanism to be used in the low gear range. This allows more room to be dedicated to the higher gear range.

High-speed, high-response gear-shifting technology, using a multiplate wet clutch developed for use in automatic transmission, is used to switch power from the gear to the belt and pulleys. This secures performance in response to different situations, from smooth and fuel-efficient driving to sporty performance with fast shifts.

The design also maintains the benefits of a CVT, which can freely adjust the gear ratio to simulate changes like multi-gear automatic transmission under heavy acceleration. This gives linear acceleration feel with synchronisation of the increasing engine revs and vehicle speed.

IMAGINATIVE TECHNOLOGY

The unique character of the Lexus UX is expressed in the application of imaginative technology in detailed aspects of the car, emphasising its depth of quality to customers, particularly those who might be buying a premium brand vehicle for the first time.

Safety

The UX is available with the latest version of Lexus Safety System +, including a Pre-Collision System (PCS) developed to be able to recognize pedestrians at night. Additionally, PCS radar detection has been extended to enable detection of cyclists during the day – road users who are involved in a high number of traffic accidents[2]. The package provided on the UX also includes Lexus Co DRIVE (featuring Lane Tracing Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control), Automatic High Beam/Adaptive High-beam System, and Road Sign Assist[3].

A Parking Support Brake detects the risk of the vehicle coming into contact with a stationary object in its path, or another vehicle approaching from behind, and will automatically reduce drive force, initiate braking and trigger sound and visual warnings to help reduce the likelihood of a collision, or lessen the damage if an impact does occur.

World-first aerodynamic design details

Lexus took a new approach to achieve the best possible aerodynamic performance from the UX’s rear combination lamps, wheel arch mouldings and, in a world first concept, aerodynamic wheels.

The Aero Stabilizing Blade Lights in the rear incorporate fins with a distinctive design that helps prevent airflow from wrapping around the rear of the vehicle. They make a noticeable contribution to keeping the rear of the car stable when turning and driving in crosswinds.

Painstaking adjustments were made to the lamps’ curved profile, with each change evaluated and verified in wind tunnel and real-world driving tests.

The wheel arch mouldings have flat sides and a stepped top section, which generates an airflow that helps keep reduce roll and keep the vehicle stable when the car is cornering, changing lanes or being driven in a straight line. Millimetre-precise adjustment of this step feature kept an optimal balance between the stabilising effect and design considerations.

The UX’s aluminium wheels have a world-first aerodynamic design that helps both keep the brakes cool and reduce wind resistance. Computer simulations and wind tunnel testing produced a profile shape for the wheel’s spokes that increased the amount of airflow that could be directed to cool the disc brakes, without compromising the coefficient of drag (Cd).

Single knob ventilation control with wireless lighting

The UX’s air vents have a new single-knob control for air flow direction and volume, illuminated using a new wireless system. By combining the two functions in a single control, the vents could be made larger, improving performance. Each control has an LED light source that is powered wirelessly, using electromagnetic resonance between two coils vibrating at the same frequency. Using the same design principle as the LC’s rear combination lamps, the vent lights use mirror optics to create the effect of floating lighting depth, even though the reflector element is only 3mm thick.

UX F SPORT

The F SPORT versions of the UX are clearly differentiated by styling treatment that emphasises a low and wide form, evoking sporty driving performance. At the front, an exclusive mesh grille references the Lexus F SPORT bloodline, with extra impact generated by large fog light bezels with L-shaped chrome mouldings and detailing that repeats the F-mesh pattern of the grille.

At the rear there is an exclusive bumper design with chrome highlights, projecting a secure, sporting image. Using a jet black ornamentation on the front and rear mouldings created a unified appearance, while the sporty quality is further reflected in exclusive 18-inch alloy wheel designs.

In the cabin the F SPORT-exclusive features include sports seats, made with a highly supportive integrated foaming technique, an eight-inch TFT colour display and an instrument meter with a moving outer ring. The F SPORT steering wheel has a dimpled leather covering (featured also on the shift knob) and there are sports aluminium pedals and footrest.

The F SPORT models benefit from exclusive tuning of the suspension, with adjustment to both springs and stabiliser bars, and the use of rear performance dampers to provide accurate, stable and responsive handling. They are also available with a specifically adapted version of the new high-response Adaptive Variable Suspension system featured on the Lexus LC flagship coupe. The aim is to provide a level of damping force that contributes to a rewarding drive, but doesn’t detract from comfortable ride quality. This damping force is reduced in straight line driving and increased when cornering or changing lanes to provide stability with minimal roll. Where AVS is fitted, its functionality is linked to the Sport S+ mode in the car’s Drive Mode Select.

The driving experience can be further enhanced with Active Sound Control (ASC), generating an audio feedback that gives the aural effect of up and downshifts like those experienced with a geared automatic transmission. And additional Sonic Interaction Design (SID) function adjust the sound the vehicle makes when drive in Sport S+ mode (S+ Sound). This can be switched off, if desired, using the ASC switch.

[1] Preliminary figures.

[2] Availability of features might differ depending on local market specifications.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen. It’s my pleasure to welcome you to Lexus!

It has been nearly 30 years since we launched our brand. If you think about it, Lexus was a disrupter at that time, demonstrating that we could build innovative vehicles, with great performance and incredible quality. Of course at the centre was and always will be our commitment to providing a personalized and exceptional customer experience.

Over the years we have leveraged our disrupter mindset and our DNA of product innovation by introducing industry-first technologies in many fields such as active safety, car manufacturing and on-board premium features.

Other innovations include bringing the first premium crossover to market with the RX.

And of course our industry leading self-charging hybrid has been nothing short of amazing. Since we introduced this new technology to the premium market back in 2005, we have sold more hybrids than all of our competitors combined.

Today we have the largest range of premium self-charging hybrids on the market with over 1.3 million sold globally, and more than 350 thousand in Europe.

Our disruptor mindset and Lexus DNA have extended to the design of our vehicles. The Lexus signature grille has become a hallmark in the industry and we collected many awards for innovation in design, such as with the recently launched LC.

Now let’s take a look at some of the vehicles we have with us today.

10 years ago we introduced the F marque … combining muscular design, authentic sports performance and cutting-edge technologies. Today we present here in Geneva the car that brings this milestone to life: the RC F 10th anniversary edition. This will be a limited run of only 350 units globally … and European customers can expect to take delivery by the end of the summer.

Now let’s look further into the future. At the recent Detroit Motor show we have revealed our vision of a new type of flagship crossover with the Lexus LF-1 Limitless Concept, and today it’s making its European Premiere here in Geneva.

This amazing vehicle signals our future design direction. It’s combining crossover capabilities with outstanding performance, innovative features and Lexus true quality.

The LF-1 Limitless Concept is like a co-pilot, anticipating the needs of its driver and passengers. For example, it has a virtual assistant with links to navigation, radar and cameras to provide advanced predictive capabilities.

As a further proof of our disruptor mind set and commitment to innovation, this vehicle is capable of hosting any powertrain: self-charging hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric or even fuel cell.

Limitless is more than just the name of the concept vehicle; it’s also how we see our opportunities for the coming years. Already today, 98% of our sales in Western Europe are electrified, and we will continue playing a leading role in the electrification trend in the global automotive industry.

Now let’s turn to more immediate product news.

Our next launch is just around the corner: it’s the RX L, our first seven-seater to be offered in Western Europe. The RX L retains the stylish and elegant design of the RX, while offering even more space and versatility.

This has been achieved by optimizing vehicle packaging with only 110 mm additional length. Third-row passengers also benefit from great comfort and luxury, for example thanks to a 3-zone climate control system. On top, the RX L offers great luggage space flexibility behind the third row.

Ladies and Gentlemen, with close to 75 thousand Lexus sales in 2017 in Europe - the highest ever - we achieved our 4th consecutive year of sales growth. But our ambition is to get to 100 thousand vehicles in Europe by 2020.

One model will strongly contribute to this objective and to the growth of the Lexus brand globally. It’s covered here on my right, it’s one of our most exciting product launches ever.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce now in world premiere the new Lexus UX.

Thank you! This is a new type of crossover and I can tell you, everyone at Lexus was excited to reveal it to the world today. Among us, there’s one person who is probably even more passionate than everyone else.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome

Ms Chika Kako, Lexus Executive Vice President and chief engineer of the new UX.

Good morning Lexus Guests. Thank you for joining us on this special occasion.

The Lexus UX introduces a new genre crossover. It is built for modern adventurers who prefer an imaginative, refined lifestyle, and who are on a non-stop adventure to experience it. We call them Creative Urban Explorers.

The aim for the UX was not to conform to the established, solid crossover look, but to achieve a compact design that is both strong and stylish, breaking with the conventions of the segment to deliver something more distinctive and dynamic.

The vehicle’s interior was very important to me, because that is where driver and car connect. The UX cabin is very stylish, with high quality materials designed by the best Japanese craftsmen and an ‘inside-out’ philosophy inspired by a traditional style of Japanese architecture which blurs the boundary between the inside and outside of a house.

The foundation for the vehicle’s dynamic performance focuses on enabling nimble and instant response to driver inputs, while maintaining a sense of stability and safety.

For more on what’s under the UX’s hood, here’s Pascal…

Pascal Ruch

Thank you, Kako-san, for such a great vehicle.

In terms of powertrains, of course our self-charging hybrid technology will play a key role in the UX line-up, especially in Europe! The UX 250h will feature a new-generation 2 litre petrol engine combined with a compact electric motor, or even two in the all-wheel drive version. This powertrain will bring segment-leading fuel efficiency as well as a smooth and dynamic driving experience.

The UX will also be available as UX 200, with a brand new 2 litre petrol engine and transmission, delivering superior energy efficiency and direct acceleration feeling.

So, Ladies and Gentlemen, as you can see, with this UX, the other models here on display and our ongoing commitment to innovative powertrains, Lexus will continue to disrupt the market.

Let me now also introduce the Chief Designer of UX, Mr. Tetsuo Miki and Chief Branding Officer, Mr. Tokuo Fukuichi. And now I would like to invite on stage the president of Lexus International, Mr. Yoshihiro Sawa for the photoshoot.

Thank you very much for your attention. Please take some time to discover UX and the other new models and enjoy your day in Geneva.
