2018 LEXUS LS - 7 WAYS TO EXTEND THE BOUNDARIES OF AUTOMOTIVE LUXURY

<pp:caseid>255226</pp:caseid>

1 - LS DASHBOARD DESIGN: HIGH STRUNG INSPIRATION

The flowing lines that run the width of the dashboard are one of the eye-catching features of the new LS’ interior. This unique design is inspired by the strings of a koto, a traditional Japanese instrument, often referred to as a Japanese harp. While the cabin has many subtle hints of traditional Japanese aesthetics, the styling of the dashboard is a clear reminder that the LS is a car that embraces the traditions and customs of Japan.

The “koto strings” dashboard features fixed fins (representing the strings) and moveable ones concealed in its design and used to regulate and direct the flow of air into the vehicle cabin. The lines of the fins remain unbroken when the airflow is adjusted up or downwards. The world-first design of the moveable fins also ensures ample blower performance can be obtained from the air conditioning. Such design inspiration helps increase the function and performance of the new LS flagship sedan.

2 - LS FRONT SEAT SHIATSU MASSAGE: REDUCING DRIVER FATIGUE

The qualities of omotenashi hospitality in the new LS sedan are not confined to the well-being of passengers, they also address driver fatigue and alertness with a massage programme integrated into the driver’s seat. This feature helps refresh the driver and maintain their level of attention on the road, so making for a safer driving experience. Lexus works with vision and dedication to find ways of anticipating the needs of the people who use and enjoy our products. The shiatsu massage functions in the LS are another example of how we create amazing in our vehicles.

The new LS can be specified with a front seat equipped with a refresh feature that performs a shiatsu-style massage on the occupant’s thighs and back. It is an example of how Lexus’ human-centred engineering can enhance the well-being of vehicle occupants. The system offers five different massage courses, two of which cover the full body and three which focus on specific areas. These can be selected via the car’s multi-information display. This special feature helps the driver keep their mind and body refreshed, without affecting their operation of the vehicle.

3 - LS INTERIOR ILLUMINATION: JAPANESE INSPIRED LIGHTING

The LS has an inviting cabin that captures the Lexus ethos of omotenashi – hospitality. The subtle effects of the interior lighting are a detail that help set the mood in what is designed to be an inviting and luxurious space. In the new LS, lights are strategically positioned low down in the cabin to provide a gentle illumination that welcomes passengers the moment the door is opened.

The interior lighting draws on Japanese culture, being reminiscent of the way andon lamps were used to illuminate Japanese tatami rooms during the Edo period during the 17th and 18th centuries. Designers were inspired by the gentle glow of these lamps produce. In the LS’ cabin, the lighting helps create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere that can reduce stress during night-time driving. Light sources are located behind the door ornamentation panels and the armrest to provide downward light that directly illuminates the occupant surroundings. The andon-style soft lighting used through the interior also enhances the sense of spaciousness.

4 - LS AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM: ACHIEVING NEW HEIGHTS

Entering and exiting a luxury vehicle shouldn’t be awkward or uncomfortable, or feel like a chore. While many luxury sedans sit lower to the ground to help maximise aerodynamic performance at highway speed, the Lexus LS is equipped with a new air suspension that provides the best of both worlds. This height-adjustable system maintains a low ride height when driving, but raises the car’s level when parked to make it easier for people to get into or exit from the vehicle.

Lexus’ new electronically controlled air suspension has an “access mode control” which automatically raises the vehicle height when people are getting into or out of the car, making it a more comfortable and relaxed procedure. Access mode control operates automatically when the doors are opened or closed, or locked and unlocked, anticipating the occupants’ requirements true to the ethos of omotenashi.

5 - LS MARK LEVINSON REFERENCE AUDIO SYSTEM WITH QUANTUM LOGIC IMMERSION AND CLARI-FI® TECHNOLOGY: THE STIRRING SOUND OF MUSIC

Lexus has established a long and successful relationship with Mark Levinson, the world-renowned manufacturer of the finest quality audio systems and pioneer of new frontiers in sound reproduction quality. This partnership, unique in the global auto industry, has reached a higher level with a new Mark Levinson Reference Audio system designed exclusively for the new Lexus LS flagship sedan. The aim has been to provide an exceptional listening experience, capturing all the tonal subtlety and power of music as if you were listening from the best seats in a concert hall, undisturbed by external noise or interference.

No fewer than 23 speakers are featured in the new 3D Surround Mark Levinson 3D QLI Reference Surround System, unique to the new Lexus LS. Strategically positioned in 16 locations around the vehicle’s interior, they deliver sound reproduction of a higher quality than ever before experienced in a Lexus. advanced Quantum Logic Immersion technology divides audio sources into separate streams, then mixes them to create an ideal sound environment. And by applying Clari-Fi® technology, even the quality of compressed digital files is maximised.

6 - LS CLIMATE CONCIERGE: THE WARMTH OF CARE

In the new Lexus LS, omotenashi hospitality means that providing a comfortable cabin temperature is not simply a matter of heating and cooling. The sophisticated Climate Concierge monitors the body temperature and environment around each occupant, automatically adjusting warmth, ventilation and air quality to achieve the ideal level.

The new LS sedan uses the latest version of Lexus’ Climate Concierge to achieve more precise control of the cabin environment than ever before. A network of infra-red sensors constantly monitors 16 separate zones around the cabin, making fine adjustments to air temperature flow and direction, and co-ordinating with the operation of heating and ventilation systems integrated in the seats. It will even take into account external factors, such as uneven heat caused by sunshine through the windows.

7 - LS NOISE-REDUCING WHEELS: THE TRANQUILITY OF NEAR-SILENCE

It is not just the design of the new LS sedan’s interior that produces an exceptionally serene, relaxing and calm environment. Lexus has explored every detail to achieve the quietest possible cabin, including using a new kind of wheel that suppresses noise generated by the tyres. The noise-reduction wheels help minimise noise intrusion to provide a quieter ride, even when the vehicle is travelling at speed.

The secret of Lexus’ noise-reduction wheels is a design that eliminates sound waves generated by vibration of the air inside the tyres. These sound waves are channelled to a resonator hole in the rim of the wheel and into a hollow structure where friction converts them into heat. Not only do the wheels help prevent noise disturbance reaching the cabin, they also are also lightweight and highly rigid, qualities that contribute to the LS’ fine handling and fuel efficiency.

2018 ls

The pattern on the evolved, iconic spindle grille is of such delicate complexity, it required an unusually high level of human skill in both the design and fabrication stages to complete. From computer screen to finished product, constant artisan involvement ensured the beauty of the designer’s original vision was fully expressed.

The new design features a single intricate span of interlocking Lexus ‘L’ motifs, a web-like tapestry inspired by the fine delicate patterns of those found in nature. While previous designs called for two separate upper and lower molds, the designers at Lexus challenged themselves to express the the new incredibly complex grille as a single, integrated piece.

While the computer modelling program rendered the pattern with reasonable accuracy, completing the precise design required a human eye. Augmenting the computer render was a skilled design modeller in an unprecedented display of dedication to detail, working a typical eight hour day over a six month period to individually adjust the curved surfaces of five thousand motifs on-screen. Reflecting the performance spirit of the LS F SPORT variant, the grille has an even more dynamic expression requiring edits to over seven thousand surfaces. Now complete, the intricate, computer-rendered pattern – finished by meticulous human manipulation into a work of art – continues its journey in the hands of a metal mold Takumi craftsman.

“Takumi” describes a craftsperson with the highest levels of technical skill and precise application, honed over decades of experience in his or her field of expertise. Yasuhiro Nakashima has spent twenty-seven years learning and honing his craft – filing, shaping and polishing metal molds to extremely exact levels. The Takumi master possesses a natural competitiveness and a passion to be the best at what he does, the depth of his dedication illustrated in his own set of customized tools – including hand-made bamboo instruments to shape finer details. When Nakashima received the all-new Lexus LS spindle grille design from the Lexus Design team, he needed to bring his passionate artisanship to ensure the mold’s accuracy.

The uncommonly large single grille required the finished mold to be structurally sound while also accurately reflecting the finely detailed design. The machines and processes used to create the mold are amongst the very best available anywhere but – reflecting the same human factor in the design – finishing with absolute accuracy necessitated a remarkable human skill. With his customized toolset and experienced eye, Nakashima is able to refine surface smoothness to within 100 microns (0.1 millimeter) – a difference even the best robotic milling technology cannot detect. During the finishing he also anticipates details technology cannot, polishing by hand the minute individual surfaces in directions that improve the reflective aesthetic of the grille’s final coating. These details may not be readily noticeable at a casual glance but are further indication of the dedication he applies to his craft with techniques refined over decades.

Fabricating a mold to the exactness articulated in the design demanded extra attention from Nakashima that helped push the production stage out to five months – over a month longer than usual. Throughout the process, he collaborated with the design team – each challenging the other, designer and craftsman working together to ensure the very best outcome. Koichi Suga, Lexus Project Chief Designer complements Nakashima, “We consistently pushed our partners beyond previous thresholds to help deliver a vehicle that delights the public enough to want to buy it. I know this can be very difficult at times but I also know Nakashima-san shares our vision and worked extremely hard to realize our design”. Nakashima concludes, “I want those who see the grille to appreciate the design and to feel wonder over its creation, I want them to be amazed at first glance”.

Lexus has redefined its flagship sedan and set it apart from the competition with unique, imaginative design and elevated levels of craftsmanship that make the impossible, a reality. And that story begins at the front, with the completely reimagined spindle grille.

lexus,2018ls,2018 ls

The new Lexus LS: a fifth generation of the brand-defining flagship sedan

The original Lexus LS was the result of six years’ work by 1,400 engineers to build a luxury car that would rival the best in the world. This “Project F1” duly delivered the original LS 400 model in 1989, launching the Lexus brand and beginning a transformation of the prestige vehicle market.

Toshio Asahi, Chief Engineer of the new LS, reflected on how the original model took the motor industry by surprise: “Its excellent driving performance and superior quietness were proof that we allowed no compromise.”

More than that, it also sparked a revolution in customer service and satisfaction, with newcomer Lexus consistently setting new benchmarks for the established industry players to aspire to.

Almost 30 years later, an all-new, fifth generation LS flagship sedan is being launched, a model that draws on the proud history of its predecessors while breaking new ground in design, technology and performance, and extending the boundaries of automotive luxury.

The challenge now for Lexus is not simply to go beyond the achievements of the past, but to reimagine what a global flagship sedan should be. This mission has had the close attention of Toyota President Akio Toyoda, who is committed to introducing more excitement to Lexus models and who has helped in the development of the new LS in his role as a Master Driver.

“Not only will the LS symbolise the Lexus brand, it will become the definitive new generation luxury car, embodyin g Japanese tradition and culture,” said Chief Engineer Asahi. “As such, this global pinnacle must go far beyond what the world expects from a luxury vehicle.”

The Lexus brand shift

Customers’ perceptions of “luxury” were very different back when the original LS was launched; at that time, the focus on was on objective qualities that could be measured. Today the landscape has changed so that qualitative, subjective responses have become more important considerations when developing the new model.

Chief Engineer Asahi explained: “Luxury is now about experiences rather than possessing luxury items, so Lexus has shifted from being a luxury car brand to a lifestyle brand that offers amazing experiences.”

This broader outlook is witnessed in Lexus’ wide-ranging encouragement of innovation and emerging talent in diverse creative fields. For example, the annual Lexus Design Award seeks out exciting new designers worldwide, giving them the chance to showcase their ideas at Milan Design Week and develop their work with mentorship from leading professionals. Lexus also regularly works with high-profile innovators in fashion, art and music to help create amazing experiences that capture the essence of its brand.

The rebirth of Lexus’ flagship sedan in the form of the all-new LS encapsulates this new, wide-ranging luxury philosophy.

Lexus’ brand differentiators

BRAVE DESIGN

A new luxury flagship sedan that defines the Lexus brand

Radical new design with coupe-like silhouette, yet the spaciousness of a prestige sedan

Interior combines modern design with traditional Japanese aesthetics

New platform delivers even higher level of LS agility and comfort

Crafting a unique identity

Koichi Suga, Chief Designer of the new LS, recognised from the outset the pivotal role the model plays in defining Lexus, embodying the brand’s history, image and what it stands for.

“I knew that this was an amazing opportunity to create a Lexus flagship sedan for the world,” he said. “With my team we wanted to produce something completely new, with unique proportions. Our goal was a car that is longer, lower and wider with a more powerful presence,” he said.

The designers were helped in their task by the new Global Architecture – Luxury (GA-L) platform on which the new LS is constructed. Its proportions allow for an extended wheelbase, a spacious interior and a lower, ground-hugging appearance with coupe lines.

Chief Designer Suga made outline sketches on dozens of small Post-it notes before crystallising his ideas for a sporty look that would project a more emotional image for Lexus.

“Our modelling theme was ‘forged from passion,’ with the sense of the ‘passion’ being pushed outwards towards the four wheels,” he said. “Our sketches were drawn with an emphasis on a flowing silhouette and large tyres. Meanwhile we also had to address the critical points of providing space for rear seat passengers and ease of getting in and out of the car.”

In the process of defining the car’s design, no fewer than seven mock-up models were completed, compared to the three or four usually created for an all-new model development programme, reflecting the intense attention to detail and importance of the new LS to the Lexus brand as a whole.

Design generated by the spindle grille

The spindle grille has become a signature feature of Lexus vehicle design, but its purpose is not simply a brand signifier. On the new LS it provides a starting point for the car’s design theme, generating lines which flow through the body and converge at the rear.

The grille itself has an intricate mesh design with 5,000 individual surfaces (more than 7,000 in the F SPORT), which took a highly skilled CAD modellers three and a half months to produce (five months for F SPORT), followed by further precision adjustment by hand. The sophisticated pattern echoes the shape of the grille as it folds back, with a sense of tension and an appearance which changes according to the light.

The spindle theme is also evident in the car’s rear styling and is even picked up in the stitching pattern for the F SPORT seat upholstery.

Exterior design

Lexus has revolutionised the LS’s design principles, moving from its established “three-box” sedan to a car that presents a radically different, coupe-like silhouette. Its lower, sleeker lines, which are more appealing to today’s customers, have been achieved without sacrificing any of the spaciousness and comfort that are fundamental to the LS’ status as a flagship model.

Notably, it is the first Lexus sedan to feature a six-window profile, which ensures excellent outward visibility, and also the first to feature windows with flush surfaces that integrate smoothly with the side pillars.

A shoulder line running from front to rear emphasises the low centre of gravity and the car’s low posture, emphasising the horizontal axis. The lines of the front and rear fenders are slanted forwards, generating a dynamic impression and evoking the car’s performance qualities.

The ground-hugging appearance is not an illusion: the GA-L platform has allowed the LS’ height to be reduced by 15.2 mm, with the hood and boot lowered even further – by approximately 30.5 and 40.6 mm respectively.

The frontal design makes a bold statement with the dramatic forward thrust of the spindle grille and a low hood profile, achieved thanks to the positioning of the front suspension towers permitted by the new GA-L platform. The boundary between the hood and the fenders is deeply sculpted, accentuating the contrast between the different surfaces.

The impact of the frontal design is enhanced by ultra-compact, triple bi-LED (high/low beam) headlights. These are housed in a narrow, slit-shaped unit that merges with the LED daytime running lights, set in an L-configuration that wraps around the edge of car. Sequential turn indicators are aligned with the DRLs, comprising 16 LEDs that illuminate in just 0.08 seconds.

At the rear, the shoulder line connects to the rear combination lamps, then folds down and back on itself to connect to the rear diffuser, echoing the lines of the spindle grille. The full LED combination lamps have a sleek design with strong vertical corners that give them an instantly recognisable shape.

The LS is equipped as standard with a glass sunroof which opens externally. This allows for a design that is 30 mm thinner than previously, preserving cabin headroom beneath the low roofline.

The LS is available with a range of new wheel designs, including 19 and 20-inch cast alloy noise reduction wheels, 20-inch forged alloys and a 10-spoke 20-inch cast alloy design exclusive to the F SPORT model.

In Europe, 13 different exterior paint finishes are available for the new LS, including a new Manganese Luster shade and the new Sonic Agate. F White and Sapphire Blue are exclusive to the F SPORT model.

Interior design

The design of the new LS’ interior combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with advanced manufacturing techniques, reflected in elements such as the soft ambient lighting that makes the armrests appear to float next to the door panels, and new ways of working with wood to create trims with vibrant and detailed grain patterns.

Chief Designer Suga explained: “I hope that when you open the door, you have an immediate sense that you are looking at an interior that’s unlike any luxury car you’ve seen before.”

The new LS provides a driver focused cockpit and a front passenger seat area designed to gently envelop the occupant. Elements such as fine leather, precise stitch-work and detailed metal and wood accents add to the welcoming ambience with a range of textures and surfaces that are pleasing to the eye and touch.

The seats are upholstered in a new L-aniline leather that is remarkable soft and supple – up to 30 per cent softer than premium semi-aniline leather. Only the finest one per cent of hides are selected for the L-aniline tanning process.

The dashboard has a sweeping array of fixed, horizontal metal fins spanning its full width, neatly concealing the movable fins that direct airflow from the air conditioning vents. The information displays are positioned at a uniform height in a “seat-in-control” layout that allows the driver to view and operate all the systems without changing their body posture.

Directly in front of the driver, the standard combination meter is set in a stitched leather frame, with the Optitron display presenting what looks like a physical metal bezel. An elegant, full screen animation is presented on the eight-inch TFT screen when the driver enters and leaves the vehicle. A high-definition, full-colour head-up display is available, the largest in the LS’ segment. Images are projected to appear three metres ahead of the driver, to minimise the eye focus adjustment required between looking at the display and the road ahead.

The new steering wheel has a three-spoke design and smaller diameter (-10 mm) than that used in the previous LS model. The profile varies around the circumference to provide ideal grip characteristics. Three versions of the wheel are available, with an all-leather trim, a combination of leather with genuine woodgrain inserts, and an F SPORT version that uses the same grip profile as the LC coupe.

A range of interior colours is available: Black, L-White, Ivory, Topaz Brown, Dark Saddle Tan, Noble Brown, Camel and Crimson & Black combination. The F SPORT options are Galaxy Black, F White or Flare Red.

The trim choices include Kiriko Glass,Laser Cut Dark Wood, Black Shimamoku, Art Wood Organic or Herringbone, Laser Cut Special and two types of walnut finish. Naguri-Style aluminium trim is exclusive to the F SPORT model.

TAKUMI CRAFTSMANSHIP

Takumi craftsmanship combines the best traditions of Japanese culture and aesthetics with modern design and technologies

Luxury interior embraces artforms such as Kiriko glass-making and Origami in the creation of exclusive ornamentation and hand-pleated door panels

Specialist techniques applied to create new Art Wood trims

The intersection of tradition and technology

The fine skills of Takumi craftspeople contribute to the high quality of every Lexus vehicle, but in developing the new LS, Lexus has gone further to combine the traditions of Japanese culture and aesthetics with contemporary design and advanced technologies.

It was Chief Designer Koichi Suga’s vision for the new LS that is should draw on traditional Japanese artforms, such as Kiriko glass-making and Origami. He said: “As a Japanese luxury brand, we wanted to integrate elements of Japanese culture and the timeless appeal of Japanese craftsmanship to express the artistic side of Lexus.”

The Lexus Takumi

The Takumi are the most senior craftspeople in Lexus, responsible for ensuring that the required excellent quality is achieved in every stage of the car-making process.

Using the skills of the human hand, eye and ear, honed through years of experience, they can detect the smallest imperfections and the fine adjustments that may be needed to improve performance or appearance.

They also contribute to the hand-crafted elements of the vehicle, for example the precision stitching of the leather upholstery. The Takumi undergo intensive training, moving from straight lines to the rapid sewing of curved seams. Once they have mastered this technique, they work on a real instrument panel, repeating the seaming several hundred times over a period of three months. At Lexus’ giant Kyushu factory there are just 12 Takumi responsible for the detailed accuracy of every stitch.

The Takumi are also responsible for training and inspiring other technicians, helping them learn the skills that will make them the Takumi of the future.

The earn Takumi status, Lexus craftsman have to complete a number of rigorous challenges, including a daily Origami cat challenge. To demonstrate their dexterity and attention to detail, they must perfectly complete the folded cat design in less than 90 seconds. What’s more, they have to accomplish the task using only their non-dominant hand.

Kiriko glass ornamentation

The traditional skills and designs of Japanese Kiriko glass-making have been used to create a unique ornamentation for the new LS’ door panels. Masters of Kiriko worked with Lexus to replicate the hand-carved appearance of the glasswork, which adds extra dimensions of visual and tactile appeal with its light-catching, multi-faceted surface. Although the glass looks delicate, it is in fact very strong thanks to modern reinforcement technology.

Hand-pleated door panels

The draped pleating in the door panels has been achieved using the time-honoured skills of Origami paper-folding. A colour designer and a fabric artisan produced Hand Pleats, a new fabric pleating technique that creates a three-dimensional pattern that is pleasing to the eye and touch. The process took four years to develop and can only be carried out by the human hand. It mirrors the work of the finest Origami artists, requiring individual sheets of fabric to be expertly folded, like a sheet of paper. The finished panel changes in appearance according to the time of day and cabin illumination, adding to the elegance and enveloping quality of the interior.

Art wood

Lexus has applied new ways of working with veneers to produce unique designs and effects that distinguish the new LS from any other model.

Using Takumi craftsmanship, it has produced a new Art Wood finishes that fuse the natural beauty of wood with Lexus’ brave design. Art Wood Organic uses a precise layering technique and a natural gloss coating to bring out vibrant, contrasting, flame-like grain patterns. For Art Wood Herringbone, techniques used to craft fine musical instruments are applied, with the hand-grafting of small pieces of wood to create delicate symmetrical patterns.

A third interpretation, Laser Cut Special, uses laser technology to cut through the veneer to expose a sub-layer of metal, creating a pattern inspired by the way the Lexus L-motif is worked into the mesh of the LS’ spindle grille.

The meaning of Omotenashi

Lexus believes that creating new standards of luxury in a flagship model is not simply a matter of adding more equipment features and technologies. Rather it aims to produce a kind of progressive luxury that welcomes and cares for the vehicle’s occupants, anticipating their needs and enabling the driver to feel perfectly connected to the car. It’s a way of thinking that’s inspired by Omotenashi, the finest principles of traditional Japanese hospitality.

The influence of Omotenashi starts with the “welcome” sequence as the driver approaches the vehicle. Inside the car there is a meticulous attention to detail in providing the most comfortable, safe and relaxing environment for all occupants, whether taking the wheel, or enjoying being chauffeured as a passenger.

Premium Access

To make getting in and out of the new LS as comfortable as possible, models equipped with air suspension provide a Premium access function. This automatically raises the low-slung sedan by 40 mm to an ideal 555 mm hip-height in just four seconds when the vehicle is unlocked. Once the occupants are on board and engine is switched on, the car returns to its regular ride height. The same convenient height adjustment is made when the car is stopped and a door is opened for someone to exit.

For the driver and front seat passenger, there is a sense of the car being prepared for their arrival, with the seat belt holder extending by 50 mm when the front doors are opened, ready for use. For the driver, the holder also rises when the engine is switched off, to make unbuckling easier. The feeling of being welcomed into the car continues with the outer cushion bolster opening out when the car is unlocked, and then automatically returning to its normal, supportive position when the driver is seated. The driver’s seat also automatically rises and moves rearwards to make for easier exit from the vehicle; similarly, when the driver enters the car, it returns to the previous driving position when they are seated.

The cabin lighting adds to the sense of welcome, with an illumination inspired by the soft glow of traditional Japanese Andon lanterns. Light sources are located behind the door trim panels and armrest, giving indirect, downward illumination that adds to the sense of spaciousness.

Seating design

The design of the seats in the new LS was a prime consideration and a defining factor in the Omotenashi qualities of the car.

Lexus developed the seating to suit two types of customer: those who want to drive the car and those who will mostly be chauffeured in it as a passenger. This required equal attention to be paid to the needs of the driver, as well as rear-seat occupants, ensuring everyone on board can travel in supreme comfort, regardless of how long the journey lasts.

Front seating with 28-way adjustment and Shiatsu massage

The new LS is available with a new driver’s seat with 28-way power and pneumatic adjustment, including new controls to adapt support for the back, pelvis and hips. The level of adjustment is the best in the LS’ segment. The design provides excellent side holding, pelvis stability and shoulder support, and allows people of all body sizes and types to find their ideal position at the wheel and feel at one with the car.

Built on a new frame, the front seats are stronger and more rigid, using a high tensile steel side frame, yet they weigh only about 6 kg.

Rear seats with premium access

The multi-function touchscreen in the rear centre armrest console is used to precisely control the position of the rear seats, together with audio, climate, sunshade and interior lighting functions. The front passenger seat and entertainment monitor are also automatically adjusted to suit the chosen configuration.

There are three pre-set rear seat positions: Business, which is the default; Entertain, which reclines the seat for comfortable viewing of the entertainment monitor, and Relax, which extends the leg ottoman, deeply reclines the seatback and moves the front passenger seat to its further forward position to provide maximum legroom (at 1,022 mm, 86 mm more than in the previous LS). When the passenger arrives at their destination, the seat automatically returns to its default position as soon as the rear door is opened, allowing for an easy and comfortable exit .

The rear seats are available with best-in-class 22-way adjustment, including back, hip and pelvis support and ottoman extension. The angle of rear seat recline is also class-leading, at 48 degrees, achieved through adept packaging and a revised reclining mechanism.

Shiatsu massage functions

Lexus consulted Japanese massage experts to help design new Shiatsu massage systems for the front and rear seats that provide the right degree of thumb-like pressure in the right places to help the occupant relax.

For the front seats there are five separate massage courses which can be selected using the multi-information display, working with a centripetal or centrifugal action, or focusing on the lumbar, upper and lower body regions. For the driver this promotes relaxation without impairing their control of the car.

The rear seat massage function has also been upgraded with its operating area expanded to cover the occupant’s thighs as well as back. In a world-first, the system includes two spot heaters for the shoulder and lower back to provide targeted heat stimulation in conjunction with the Shiatsu massage.

Multiple setting options let the user tailor the massage sequence to suit their preference, with full body settings or operation focused on the upper or lower body, shoulders or lumbar region.

Climate control

Lexus has succeeded in engineering a more compact yet no less efficient climate control system that supports the highest levels of on-board comfort. The smaller size of the air conditioning unit has helped secure the LS’s low hood line and low centre of gravity. The separate rear air conditioning system has also been made smaller, so there is less impact on the amount of load space available in the boot.

The configuration of the rear vents allows for a lower roof, while their positioning has been revised to provide optimum performance.

Climate Concierge

The Climate Concierge provides co-ordinated and efficient control of the air conditioning, seat heating and ventilation and heated steering wheel to maintain a comfortable environment to suit each person on board.

The system uses an upgraded infra-red matrix sensor to monitor the body temperature of all the vehicle occupants, with the number monitoring zones increased from six to sixteen to provide complete coverage of the interior. This allows for much finer control of heating and cooling, taking into account factors such as uneven heating cause by low-level sunlight through the windows. Operation is controlled via the main multimedia display; where four-zone climate control is specified there are additional controls in the rear seat console.

Near-silence – or the stirring sound of music

Lexus has designed the cabin of the new LS 500h to provide a quiet and calming environment, using new sound suppression methods to hush the environment to a level beyond any previous LS model. Active Noise Control detects when engine noise enters the cabin and cancels out certain frequencies using antiphase sound from the audio speakers.

The finest quality Mark Levinson Reference Audio systems have been a feature unique to Lexus’ most exclusive models, designed in co-operation with Lexus’ engineers to achieve performance tailored to the interior architecture of each vehicle.

The new LS is available with a new 3D Surround Mark Levinson QLI Reference Surround System, operating through an array of 23 high-efficiency speakers in 16 locations around the cabin, and using a 16-channel Mark Levinson Reference amplifier. Quantum Logic Immersion – QLI – and ClariFi technology help produce exceptional sound reproduction, of a higher quality than in any previous Lexus model.

QLI technology separates the audio sources into individual streams – vocals, instruments and spatial sound information – similar to the original arrangement. These audio streams are then mixed to recreate a full, thre-dimensional sonic environment. The new system was developed as the benchmark against which all others will compared for the next 10 years.

A Pioneer 12-speaker premium system is provided as standard equipment, specifically designed for the LS’ interior.

Lexus’ focus on providing a supremely quiet cabin environment has extended to the development of noise reduction wheels. Available in 19 and 20-inch designs, these feature a hollow rim section with a resonator hole that helps reduce air resonance generated by the tyres. This occurs when the tyre deforms as it travels over the road surface, changing the internal air pressure; in turn, this causes the air inside the tyre to vibrate, generating sound waves. With the noise reduction wheel, the sound waves are directed towards the resonator hole, where they resonate with the air in the hollow section of the wheel. This creates friction in the air, which converts the soundwave to heat, absorbing resonance and reducing sound pressure. The wheel design also enhances rigidity and saves weight.

Power trunk with hands-free operation

The new LS has a power-operated trunk that can be opened and closed hands-free, using a kick-sensor beneath the rear bumper. When carrying luggage, or wanting to avoid touching the car’s bodywork, the user only needs to stand within the sensor’s range with the smart key on their person to activate the control, by passing their foot below the edge of the bumper.

LS available with new technologies for improved active safety, together with driving assistance functions that signal Lexus’ progress towards future automated driving systems

New Lexus Safety System + A features include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Alert and Active Steering Assist, Lexus Co-Drive (Lane Tracing Assist with the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control) and Front Cross Traffic Alert

Additional Parking Support Brakes and enhanced Panoramic View Monitor

Advances in active safety and driver assistance technology

The all-new LS marks the introduction of new technologies that provide world-leading safety performance and a new level of driver assistance that signals Lexus’ progress towards developing future automated driving systems.

Lexus has been promoting the development of automated driving technologies since the 1990s, working towards its goals of eliminating traffic accidents and providing individual mobility for people who otherwise would not be able to enjoy that freedom.

The new LS makes important progress in this area. As well as being equipped with Lexus Safety System +, the package of active safety systems Lexus has been rolling out across its vehicle range, it is the first model to benefit from the more advanced Lexus Safety System + A. This system comprises both active safety functions designed to help prevent an accident from happening, together with more sophisticated driver assistance features that signal a move towards providing a degree of automated driving.

Called Lexus CoDrive, this uses Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist to give a partial level of automated driving capability comparable to the SAE International level 2.

New and improved active safety technologies

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Alert and world-first Active Steering Assist

The Pre-collision System (PCS) is a function familiar from Lexus Safety System +, but in the new LS its operation has been enhanced with the addition of both Pedestrian Alert and the world-first Active Steering Assist.

PCS uses millimetre-wave radar and a stereo camera to detect pedestrians and vehicles ahead and supports collision prevention and the mitigation of damage by alerting the driver and providing Pre-collision Brake Assist and Pre-collision Braking. The improved system can detect cyclists and night-time pedestrians and has an improved deceleration performance under automatic braking. For example it can slow the vehicle by as much as 60 km/h when a pedestrian is detected ahead, improving the chances of avoiding a collision.

With Pedestrian Alert, if there is the possibility of a collision with a pedestrian in front of the vehicle, the presence and location of the pedestrian is shown in an animation on the head-up display, contributing to the driver’s intuitive recognition of what is happening on the road ahead.

The Active Steering Assist determines when there is high risk of a collision with pedestrian in the car’s lane of travel, or with a continuous structure, such as a crash barrier. If it calculates that it would be difficult to avoid a collision using brake control alone, but that it might be avoided with steering control, it will initiate automatic steering control in addition to triggering an alert and applying the brakes.

Two-stage Adaptive High-beam System (AHS)

The LS’ headlights each feature an arrangement of eight upper and 16 lower LEDs. The Two-stage Adaptive High-beam System provides optimal lighting with separate on/off control of each row LEDs, giving finer control of lighting strength and distance compared to Lexus’ established AHS. This allows for the car to be driven for longer on high-beam without dazzling vehicles ahead or oncoming traffic, improving night-time visibility.

Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA)

FCTA is designed to help prevent collisions happening at intersections by detecting vehicles moving across the flow of traffic ahead. It uses forward direction radar and is the world’s first system of its kind to alert drivers to the direction from which a cross-traffic vehicle is approaching at an intersection. Alerts are shown on the driver’s head-up display. If the LS continues to move forward regardless of there being a vehicle in cross traffic, a warning buzzer is sounded and an alert is shown on the multi-information display.

Road Sign Assist (RSA)

RSA uses a camera and navigation system maps to acquire road sign information, which it then relays to the driver using the head-up and multi-information displays. This promotes safer driving by reducing the risk of the driver failing to see or notice important highway commands and warnings.

Driver assistance technologies

Lexus CoDrive advanced driving assist technology

Lexus CoDrive adds Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to the basic functions of Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to provide steering support in line with the driver’s intentions. By providing seamless driving support on roads with many bends, or in traffic jams, Lexus CoDrive can reduce the burden on the driver. It gives the driver clear information about the status of the driving support that’s being provided, via the LSs head-up and multi-information displays.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control offers outstanding basic recognition performance, with wide-angle detection using a new millimetre-wave radar and a camera with a wider forward recognition range. The system also helps make driving more comfortable, with smooth acceleration at start-up and during vehicle following, departure and acceleration, or adapting to the speed limit detected by RSA.

Lane Tracing Assist

Lane Tracing Assist uses steering control to provide lane-keeping support when the LS’s Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is in operation. As well as using a camera to detect lane demarcation lines on the road, it traces the path of the vehicle ahead to provide assistance when the lines cannot be recognised. This can happen, for example, in low-speed traffic when there little space between the LS and the vehicle ahead.

Additional safety technologies

Parking support brakes

The LS’ low-speed braking support systems have been integrated in a single package, to reduce the risk of damage from low-speed bumps when parking or manoeuvring, helping the driver avoid hazards such as nearby moving vehicles and pedestrians and stationary objects such as walls and street furniture. The world’s first rear pedestrian support brake has been added to the Intelligent Clearance Sonar and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking. This detects pedestrians behind the vehicle using a rear camera; if there is a risk of a collision, alerts and brake control are triggered.

Panoramic View Monitor with side clearance and cornering view functions

Side clearance view and cornering view functions have been added to the Panoramic View Monitor, making it easier for the driver to determine the safe space around the vehicle. Side clearance view produces an image on the LS’ display monitor that shows the area in front of the car as if seen from a high position above the rear of the vehicle, giving the driver better sight of the space on each side of the car, for example when passing another car on a narrow road. When side clearance view is operating, cornering view automatically produces an image of the vehicle as seen from the rear at an angle in line with the car’s direction when moving through a bend or turn. These help the driver confirm left or right turns can be made safely on narrow roads and avoid driving up onto the kerb.

Multimedia system and the Lexus Remote Touch Interface

The new LS is equipped with a next-generation Lexus multimedia system that provides complete control of navigation, audio, media, telephone, apps and climate control, as well adjustment of and customisation of key vehicle settings. It uses a 12.3-inch high-resolution screen that provides quick and clear information and graphics.

The dynamic voice recognition provides more accurate response to spoken commands by using on and off-board speech processing. Manual operation is by means of the Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a new, enlarged and frameless touchpad that allows gesture controls to be used – pinch, scroll, drag, double-tap – like those for smartphones, while also supporting handwritten input.

EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE

Constructed on the new Global Architecture – Luxury platform, with direct dynamic benefits of a low centre gravity and optimum front/rear weight distribution

LS 500h powered by the new Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System powertrain

Sophisticated suspension systems, including Adaptive Variable Suspension with continuously variable control and new air suspension

new Global Architecture – Luxury platform

The new Global Architecture – Luxury (GA-L) platform that underpins the LS 500h is fundamental to its quality. This all-new structure was developed from a “clean sheet of paper,” taking a completely new approach to engineering, materials and design. The same platform is used for the Lexus LC flagship coupe, but for the LS it has been extended to gain the extra rear cabin space that was a design priority.

In fact, the new LS’ 3,125 mm wheelbase is 35mm longer than that of the previous LS long-wheelbase model. In spite of this increase in length, the driver still sits in the centre of the wheelbase, with a hip-point close to the car’s centre of gravity (which is a best-in-class 543 mm).

The combination of a low centre of gravity, a very stiff chassis and excellent weight balance contributes to reassuring poised vehicle dynamics, with seamless braking, steering and acceleration, and a consistently comfortable cabin environment for driver and passengers alike.

The platform allows the new LS to be about 15 mm lower overall, compared to the previous model, with reductions of approximately 30 and 40mm in the height of the hood and boot respectively, giving the car a ground-hugging appearance.

It has also enabled heavier elements to be moved closer to the centre of the vehicle, with the engine moved to a front midship position, the driving position moved rearwards and the hybrid battery (a lighter and more compact lithium-ion unit) positioned further forward.

Together these measures help lower the car’s centre of gravity and achieve an optimum 51/49 front to rear weight balance, minimising body roll and improving steering response for a more engaging driving experience.

Lightweight materials and highly rigid body structure

The optimisation of vehicle mass distribution has been further helped by the use of new, lightweight materials in the car’s structure, including new cast aluminium front and rear suspension towers. As aluminium cannot be welded to steel, these are connected to the body using self-piercing rivets and high-strength adhesive bonding. Compared to equivalent steel parts, these towers are significantly lighter and more rigid – about twice the rigidity and 42 per cent less weight at the front; around 1.5 times more rigid and 50 per cent lighter at the rear.

Other lightweight metals, including ultra-high tensile steel, steel alloys and aluminium are used in critical areas to provide strength and rigidity. In fact high tensile steel accounts for almost 30 per cent of the vehicle’s mass, more than double the proportion in the previous LS. Principal panels, including the doors, fenders, hood and bootlid are made of aluminium; where the doors are concerned this not only saves weight, but also allows for a slim but strong structure, maximising space inside the car.

The use of structural adhesive and laser screw welding is also significantly greater, to increase the rigidity of panel joints. Almost 33 metres of adhesive is applied to the underbody, compared to just five metres previously.

Suspension

Suspension compliance has been a defining element in the ride quality and comfort of successive Lexus LS generations. With the latest model a new, high-mounted multilink system has been developed for both the front and rear suspension, allowing even better performance to be achieved.

The front system uses double ball joints for both the upper and lower control arms, allowing control of the smallest movements caused by driver inputs or the road surface. This unique arrangement optimises the suspension geometry to increase wheel control and give more precise steering control with better initial effort. To help reduce weight, aluminium is used extensively throughout the suspension.

The rear system is a new, compact multilink design that provides high levels of stability. As with the front arrangement, it is based on the suspension developed for the LC coupe, but with adjustments to the bushing to enhance handling stability and ride comfort.

Adaptive Variable Suspension

The new LS is available with a new, more advanced Adaptive Variable Suspension that provides continuous adjustment of damping control for all four wheels in response to the way the car is being driven and road surface conditions. This continuously variable capability has increased the number of control levels from nine (in the previous LS’ system) to 650. The result is faster, seamless and more refined operation.

For example, when driving on uneven roads, the system can increase ride comfort without too great an increase in damping force. When the steering wheel is turned, however, damping force is automatically increased to suppress the effect of the car’s weight transfer and maintain a flat cornering attitude.

Air suspension

A new, electronically controlled air suspension is also available for the new LS, providing exceptional ride quality. It uses a closed system in which compressed air is stored in pneumatic tank so that it can be supplied to the suspension at the moment it’s needed to raise vehicle height.

The air suspension is used to provide the new LS’ Access mode for ease of entry to and exit from the vehicle, described in the Omotenashi chapter, above.

Braking system

The LS 500h is fitted with a new generation Electronically Controlled Braking system (ECB) that uses build-up control to increase vehicle deceleration, gradually increasing brake fluid pressure, even if the driver is maintaining constant pressure on the brake pedal. This communicates an appropriate braking feel.

The system features 357 x 34 mm front and 335 x 25 mm rear spiral-vented discs. There are four-piston callipers at the front and two-piston units at the rear. Larger brakes are featured on the LS 500h F SPORT, detailed in the specific F SPORT chapter below.

Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management

Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) co-ordinates control of a range of vehicle handling and active safety systems to enhance the overall dynamic performance of the new LS. Its operation covers the vehicle’s ABS, Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control, Electronic Power Steering, Variable Gear Ratio Steering, and Dynamic Rear Steering.

Lexus Dynamic Handling

The optional Lexus Dynamic Handling System provides a higher degree of handling poise and control in all driving scenarios, controlling the angle of all four wheels through co-ordination of the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) and Electronic Power Steering (EPS).

Its operation is calculated according to the vehicle’s speed and dynamic behaviour. Thus at speeds below 80 km/h, the front and rear wheels operate at a different angle for agile handling and securing cornering; at speeds above 80 km/h, the front and rear wheels are at the same angle of steering, for greater stability.

The VGRS controls the steering angle in line with vehicle speed and the driver’s inputs, giving better yaw response, turning performance and stability when cornering or changing lanes. The steering gear ratio is automatically adjusted, taking vehicle speed and driving conditions into account. This means fewer turns of the wheel are needed at low speeds, or when making a U-turn. The optimum ratio is selected to provide easy-to-handle responsiveness at low to medium speeds, while at high speed the VGRS helps achieve a controlled, stable feel.

Aerodynamics

The sleek new exterior design of the LS 500h is aerodynamically efficient as well as beautiful to look at. The overall form of the upper body has been crafted to have an ideal wind-cheating shape, with detailed enhancements that suppress turbulence and improve dynamic performance. It also enables a smooth rearward airflow to the back of the car, where it merges with the flow of air from the underbody.

The sides of the front bumper have been shaped to direct the airflow along the side of the wheel houses. Also, small but effective aero stabilising fins have been located on the door frame moulding and rear combination lamps, to keep the airflow closer to the body and so improve handling stability. The rear lights also have an air-kick shape, their corners curved to direct the airflow smoothly away from the vehicle.

Flush side window glass supresses the turbulence that usually occurs when air flows over uneven surfaces.

Beneath the car, the underbody has been almost fully covered to reduce drag, with aerodynamic fins located to guide the airflow smoothly rearwards. Vertical fins just behind the rear tyres help reduce turbulence and drag.

The LS 500h has a 0.26 coefficient of drag (0.28 with all-wheel drive).

Performance and smoothness redefined

The LS 500h has a self-charging, petrol-electric hybrid powertrain that uses Lexus’ revolutionary new Multi Stage Hybrid System, a technology first introduced in the LC 500h flagship coupe. It also features a naturally aspirated, 3.5-litre V6 Atkinson cycle petrol engine, two electric motors/generators and a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. Constructed using lightweight valvetrain components and equipped with D-4S direct fuel injection and VVT-i intelligent variable valve timing for both inlet (with VVT-iW ‘wide’ operation) and outlet valves, it delivers ample torque across all engine speeds, up to a 6,600 rpm red line.

Combined system output (engine and electric motors) is 264 kW / 354 HP /359PS, enabling acceleration in the front-wheel drive model from rest to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds; with all-wheel drive the acceleration time is 5.5 seconds (both times provisional, subject to final confirmation).

Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System

The Multi Stage Hybrid System uses the established Lexus Hybrid Drive electric continuously variable transmission, coupled to a new four-speed shift device. This arrangement expands the range of gearing, proving more direct response to driver inputs and a higher level of dynamic performance, while at the same time maintaining the smooth, refined performance required for luxury flagship.

In a conventional full hybrid vehicle, engine output is amplified by the electric motor via a reduction gear, but with the new Multi Stage Hybrid System the power from the V6 engine and the electric motor can be amplified by the automatic transmission, allowing much greater drive power to be generated when accelerating from stationary.

Lexus has succeeded in increasing maximum engine rpm from 6,000 to 6,600rpm. And thanks to the Multi Stage Hybrid System, the operating range in first, second and third gears has been increased, so that maximum rpm is reached at about 50km/h.

The Multi Stage Hybrid System allows the new LS 500h to be driven at higher road speeds with the combustion engine switched off, compared to previous Lexus hybrids – up to 140 km/h. It also allows the V6 engine to produce more drive power when pulling away.

Transmission with 10-speed driving feel

The design of the system places the multi-stage shift device immediately behind the power split device, on an axis aligned with the engine crankshaft. Although the transmission has four speeds, the D range has a simulated shift control pattern that replicates the feel of driving with a 10-speed gearbox. As vehicle speed rises, engine speed increases with a linear, direct and continuous acceleration feel that avoids the “rubber band” effect witnessed in some continuously variable transmissions. In the 10th gear range, the CVT control allows for cruising at lower engine revs for quiet, smooth and fuel-efficient performance.

The transmission also benefits from an improved version of the AI shift control found in conventional automatics. This enables intelligent, optimum gear selection to be made in line with driving conditions and driver inputs, for example when going up or downhill. The system also includes and automatic Drive Mode switching control. This means it can adjust gear shifts to suit the driver’s style and behaviour, without the driver having to select a different drive mode to get the kind of performance they want from the transmission.

M mode with manual gear selection

Thanks to the Multi Stage Hybrid System’s design, the driver is able to take advantage of an M mode to select and hold gears manually, using paddle shifts mounted behind the steering wheel. Thanks to the co-ordinated control of the Power Split Device and the gear shifting mechanism, the gear shift will start instantaneously with the computer receiving the signal from the paddle shift, giving an exceptionally quick response.

Run-flat tyres

The new LS is fitted as standard with new run-flat tyres, developed to provide appropriate levels of ride quality and comfort. They also contribute to the car’s optimum weight distribution and dynamic performance. The reinforced rubber used in the sidewalls allows the LS to travel with a flat tyre for up to 160 km at speeds up to 80 km/h.

Drive Mode Select

Drive Mode Select lets the driver tailor the car’s performance to suit personal preference and the road conditions. In addition to Normal and ECO modes, the new LS offers Comfort and Custom settings, together with Sport S and Sport S+. According to the mode selected, there is automatic adjustment of the powertrain, Adaptive Variable Suspension, Electric Power Steering, Variable Gear Ratio Steering and air conditioning operation, as appropriate.

THE LS 500h F SPORT

Styled and engineered for more sporty appeal

Exclusive 10-spoke 20-inch F SPORT wheels, rocker mouldings and more powerful brakes

F SPORT-exclusive interior, including seats, steering wheel, aluminium pedals, instrument display and Ultrasuede headlining

The new LS 500h range includes an F SPORT version, styled and instilled with a more engaging driving spirit. As well as bespoke design elements for both the exterior and interior, the F SPORT benefits from carefully applied chassis tuning and enhancements, while maintaining an exceptional level of comfort.

Lexus was able to make good use of the inherent agility of the new GA-L platform when developing the LS 500h F SPORT’s handling. It deployed the latest iteration of its Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management to provide optimum control of chassis dynamics through a single, co-ordinated system, delivering better traction, safety and handling agility.

Further benefits are gained through the use of exclusive 20-inch 10-spoke F SPORT cast alloy wheels, fitted with 245/45RF20 tyres at the front and 275/40RF20 tyres at the rear. Larger brakes are used, too: 400 x 36 mm front ventilated discs with six-piston monoblock aluminium callipers at the front and 359 x 30mm ventilated discs with four-piston callipers at the rear, both with high-friction brake pads.

In design aspects, the LS 500h F SPORT “turns up the volume” of the new LS design, while remaining faithful to its principal styling cues. Of particular note is an exclusive interpretation of the spindle grille with an even more intricate design that serves as a further demonstration of Lexus’ attention to fine detail. A team of CAD operators worked for months to achieve exactly the desired combination of texture and light interplay, adjusting more than 7,000 individual surfaces in the mesh pattern (compared to 5,000 for the standard LS model).

The F SPORT amplifies the LS’ rakish profile with its bespoke wheels and special rocker mouldings. The theme continues in the cabin, not least with the F SPORT grille pattern being replicated in the perforations of the leather seat upholstery. The seats themselves are F SPORT designs, available with28-way power and pneumatic adjustment and cushion extenders that provide extra body-holding performance when cornering and exceptional comfort, no matter how long the journey.

The driver’s instrument display features a special F SPORT speedometer and tachometer with an outer ring that moves to reveal a dual information display – a design adapted directly from display technology first used in the Lexus LFA supercar.

The F SPORT-exclusive steering wheel has been designed to increase the driver’s sense of connection with the car’s enhanced dynamic performance. It has the same grip profile as the wheel used in the LC coupe, produced through detailed measurements of palm pressure distribution and road testing by a Takumi driver. Further details include F SPORT accelerator pedal, footrest and shift lever. As a finishing sporting touch, the headlining is finished in tactile Ultrasuede material.

tag,2018 ls,safety

THE STORY OF KIRIKO GLASS, FITTED TO THE INTERIOR DOORS IN SELECTED GRADES IS A NOTABLE EXAMPLE – COLLABORATIVE CRAFTSMANSHIP RESULTING IN A UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL ORNAMENTATION.

In early 2014, Lexus and Asahi Glass Company (AGC) together began to explore how to use glass in vehicle interiors to express Lexus’ distinctly progressive perspective on luxury. Eventually this led to the Kiriko glass concept for the all-new Lexus LS flagship.

Kiriko, a unique Japanese tradition of hand-cutting delicate patterns into glass, produces stunning reflections of light, depending on the angle of both the light and the viewer’s gaze. Examples can be appreciated in vases, sake glasses and traditional glass ornaments.

An industry giant, AGC’s wide range of glass products include smartphone screens and television panels, as well as automobile windscreens and windows. Despite their decades-long expertise, Kiriko would require a completely new glass-molding process. It was, recalled AGC’s Hideki Ishioka, “Completely outside our traditional scope”. It also required an artisan to design and craft an exquisite, elegant Kiriko glass prototype.

THE ARTISAN

AGC turned to Kiriko glass Takumi craftsman, Toshiyasu Nakamura, a native of Toyama City, home to the well-known Glass Art Museum, a showcase of glass artisanship. Nakamura was tasked with re-creating Kiriko’s reflective effect in glass panels. These ornamental panels, to be fitted to the LS door interior, provided a unique challenge for Nakamura. Unlike the reflection in a Kiriko sake glass, prominent when held and moved around in one’s hand, a door panel is relatively fixed and a standard Kiriko glass cutting pattern might not draw out the desired characteristic.

Running his finger along the lines of a cut-glass model, Nakamura described his thoughtful solution, “Cutting at altering angles through the hand-drawn lines on the glass results in a ‘twist’, allowing more light to reflect at different angles along those lines,” he said, resulting in a distinctive and startling effect. He also hopes LS passengers will be able to enjoy these reflections at all times, with night driving yielding further reflections.

Nakamura’s meticulous methodology allows for this delicate and exacting design process – draw, cut and polish – to be accompanied by several rounds of quality inspections, necessitating only a single, final review on completion.

THE INDUSTRIALIST

From this point, it’s another eighteen months before the final Kiriko glass panels are ready to be fitted to the LS, and this journey is a story in itself. Multiple panel reproductions – exact facsimiles of Nakamura’s craft – were a singular challenge, while an automobile’s rugged environment requires a durability far beyond that of regular Kiriko pieces. For this venture to be a success required AGC to invent a whole new eight-stage process, carried out in eight different locations across Japan.

To state that AGC built a new mold to duplicate Nakamura’s design would be an understatement. His ‘twist’ lead to the incorporation of a never-before-implemented 3D digital scan when designing the mold, faithfully rendering the glass panel’s unusual dimensions and accurately reproducing its unique expression. “That’s something we never did before,” explains Ishioka, “That area was a real challenge for us.”

Partner vendors were carefully vetted to complete the remaining stages – finishing, polishing and strengthening. The latter achieved with both a film-dipping process and rear-mounted metal plating, providing the Kiriko piece a sturdiness that belies its delicate appearance. Their attitude and energy to exceed expectation impressed Ishioka, “Our partners go beyond simply completing their task. They also infuse their work with passion and emotion,” he said, in keeping with the spirit present throughout the LS’s production journey.

Due to the Kiriko panel’s unique, irregular shape, even transporting batches between vendors required an all-new logistical approach from AGC, with customized packaging materials, and innovative delivery processes ensuring quality throughout the panels’ journey.

Quality control is taken seriously by a company used to delivering products of exacting standards to the bio-tech, electronics and optics industries but even this existing process was insufficient. Above and beyond an already rigorous quality inspection, in another first, AGC must ensure the final output matches Nakamura’s prototype not only in accuracy and polish – but also in beauty.

INTERCONNECTED HARMONY

It is difficult to fully comprehend the beauty of Kiriko glass without seeing it in person. To follow the cut glass lines with one’s own eyes, and marvel at the light subtly glistening in different directions as your viewing angle adjusts.

This finished ornamentation represents both Nakamura and Ishioka’s shared vision of Japanese beauty and luxury. Nakamura reflects, “To me, Japanese beauty represents a subtlety and depth that reveals detail and craft the more one observes. As reflected in the Kiriko glass, looking at it from different angles yields different aesthetics, yet it conveys an overall sense of harmony and connectedness.”

This might also describe the union of Nakamura’s Takumi craftsmanship, and Ishioka’s passionate willingness to push the boundaries of industrial technology. Nakamura concluding, “The partnership of traditional hand-made artistry and leading-edge industrial processes is – in itself – a form of craftsmanship.”

lexus,2018ls,2018 ls

THE RESPONSE BROUGHT TOGETHER TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY TO REALIZE EXCLUSIVE INTERIOR ORNAMENTATIONS FOR THE BRAND’S FLAGSHIP VEHICLE.

When Lexus designers conceived the interior of their next flagship sedan, they imagined features that would excite the senses and deliver a distinctive expression of luxury. One such element is Artwood, an ornamentation with an artistic aesthetic unique to Lexus, fitted throughout the interior of selected LS grades. Traditional craftsmanship and modern technology are brought together to create beautiful patterns from natural wood in the ornamentation. Toyota Tsusho Corporation’s automotive division worked with wood specialist Hokusan, Ltd. and Yamaha Fine Technologies Co., Ltd, the renowned manufacturer of musical instruments, to create this unique ornamentation for Lexus.

Hokusan combines the thousand-year-old Japanese tradition of wood craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques to produce Artwood’s exquisite wood-grain designs. From raw timber, the company embarks on a two-month long, eighteen-stage process – including their advanced wood-slicing technology – to create fine patterns across the wood-grain. The result is bold and vibrant cross-grain patterns – natural in origin, yet a design that doesn’t actually exist in nature.

Celebrated for fine wood craftsmanship, Yamaha’s relationship with Lexus began with the very first LS 400, Yamaha finishing its distinctive interior wood paneling. The all-new LS is a complete reimagining of a flagship sedan, and accordingly, necessitated elevated levels of craftsmanship. Yamaha’s wood artisans responded in kind, adding to the story of craftsmanship that characterizes the all-new LS. Their expertise is applied to Hokusan’s wood sheets, with another two-month journey of shaping, polishing and finishing across fourteen processes, completing the Artwood ornamentation to be fitted to the LS, available patterns being Organic and Herringbone.

Such a protracted and complex process of experimentation to complete Artwood reflects the year-long creation of the original Artwood prototype by all three partners – including prolonged design reviews – with the result, a brave, elegant and unique design.

Artwood also demanded a new approach to production and new pinnacles in attention to detail, in cutting and design, fabrication and finishing.

Achieving an evenness in the ultra-thin wood sheet without flaws was more challenging than usual, according to Hokusan’s Tomoki Aoyama, “To design a uniquely elegant pattern from natural wood for Lexus, we had to re-work our usual production processes,” he said.

Further, the ‘Herringbone’ pattern requires yet another layer of craftsmanship, with Hokusan commissioning additional Takumi artisans whose ‘Yosegi’ technique brings a whole new wood art tradition to Lexus. This pain-staking process of manually gluing together multiple wood sheets of varied colors and grains manifests itself in the distinctive Herringbone design. Once complete, this multi-directional pattern requires Hokusan to carefully slice the combined sheets– a procedure accomplished with the meticulous consideration of water levels and glue dryness.

For Yamaha, finishing the two Artwood ornamentation patterns to the same high quality mark proved arduous. While wood coloring and polishing is in the company’s DNA, each piece is a unique, fabricated design. This called for a high degree of individual attention from the experienced craftsmen, with intensive painting and polishing processes finally drawing out the boldness of the patterns in the natural wood. Meeting these challenges galvanized Yamaha’s artisans, as Yuri Nakauchi attests, “Bringing to completion this highly-crafted ornamentation, to be used in Lexus’ flagship model was very exciting and drove us to strive for new levels of skill and productivity for a successful outcome.”

The combined efforts of Hokusan’s manufacturing precision and Yamaha’s time-honored finishing prowess have resulted in exquisite designs, with patterns expressed slightly differently as the light source alters from direct external light of day to the softer and more ambient illumination of darker hours. Aoyama imagines LS occupants being quietly and pleasantly surprised, “They may feel a subtle harmony to their environment, and upon closer contemplation find the beautifully designed art in the ornamentation is actually natural wood.”

The Artwood ornamentations are a premium element of the luxury expression in the LS interior. They are also another chapter in the story of exacting Takumi craftsmanship in the flagship model; an exemplification of elegant, brave design, created from natural wood. And only made possible through the vision of Lexus and the cooperative efforts of dedicated artisans.

lexus,2018ls,2018 ls

THESE FABRIC PANELS ARE CRAFTED IN A SMALL STUDIO IN THE HISTORICAL CITY OF KYOTO, HEADED BY AN EXTRAORDINARY TAKUMI CRAFTSPERSON.

Hand Pleating is the fabric counterpart to Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. From a single piece of cloth, hand pleating crafts a design expressing patterns formed by light and shadow. At her studio, the Sankyo Co., Ltd.’s Yuko Shimizu designs and pleats fine fabrics for curtains, fashion apparel and wedding dresses, the latter being a specialty of hers. She draws daily inspiration from the nature around her, “The sky above, the movement of cloud and the river,” she says, “For example, outside our Kyoto studio is a river, its low waters flowing over the pebbles to reveal patterns that influence my designs.” Sankyo was originally a supplier of pleat-making machinery, and in the decades that followed, Shimizu constantly learned and improved the art of hand pleating from the craftspeople she encountered.

With that hunger to continue learning more from many different sources, it is no surprise that Shimizu differentiates from her peers with out-of-the-box thinking that helps create solutions to unexpected obstacles, a very necessary approach to the particular challenges this initiative provided.

Shimizu’s craft came to the attention of textile manufacturer, Seiren Co., Ltd. Shimizu applied her wedding dress pleating expertise to a fabric sample provided by Seiren. Her work fulfilled Lexus’ desire to imbue the LS model with a feeling of timeless Japanese craftsmanship, resulting in a three-way collaboration to develop the pleated door trim.

A NEW CHALLENGE

The fabric provided by Seiren to be folded into the pleated panels is luxuriant yet hard-wearing – it’s also significantly thicker and heavier than those Shimizu normally pleats. The challenge facing Sankyo was delivering finished panels that both reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of the LS while still being able to withstand the rugged nature of a passenger vehicle interior – climactic variances, dust and human use elements amongst others.

Shimizu’s unorthodox approach made that balance possible. “To answer this challenge, we brought a whole new way of thinking and completely overhauled our work processes.” Shimizu said. She doubled her team’s size to six artisans, dividing the twenty processes in the development between them. The completion of a single pleated panel is a culmination of an undivided three-day effort.

While pleating at Sankyo is customarily carried out by a single Takumi, transforming this more durable fabric into pleated panels necessitated an extra Takumi, both folding the pleats in synchronicity. That innovation was followed by another as Shimizu introduced new techniques to achieve a shine that changes as the angle of light does, and incorporate a graduating fold size in the pleats. As daylight or door trim illumination falls across them, one realizes this interplay of light and shadow forms three-dimensional patterns along the door panel, each fold expressing the Lexus “L” motif.

A VISION FULFILLED

While all are regular company employees, Shimizu’s team collaborate closely, in the manner of a family. Their combined energies, effort and skill have been poured into the hand-finished pleated fabrics. More than a mere product, she hopes occupants in the LS will experience her philosophy of luxury, “We really put a lot of energy into crafting something beautiful that also radiates warmth for passengers to feel comfortable and relaxed.”

lexus,2018ls,2018 ls

That is exactly what the designers of the new Lexus LS luxury sedan have aimed to achieve. They have embraced the qualities of both Takumi craftsmanship and Omotenashi, the finest traditions of Japanese hospitality, to produce the most comfortable and adaptable seats yet fitted to a Lexus car.

In the spirit of Omotenashi, Lexus required that people travelling in the LS should enjoy the best possible comfort and convenience.

This called for a new seat design that allows the finest level of adjustment in 28 different ways, ensuring everyone can find their ideal position.

The 28-way power adjustable front seat surpasses the adjustability of any other vehicle while also fitting to all body types, physiques and preferences. The side supports provide excellent holding ability, the cushion stabilizes the pelvis and posture, and shoulder supports contribute to excellent steering feel, providing a new value of driving and ride comfort.

Seats with massage functions have been available for a while, but Lexus sought to make this function more effective than ever before by consulting expert Japanese Shiatsu masseurs on how much pressure should be applied, to which parts of the occupant’s body, and in which order.

Using these insights, air bladders have been integrated into the seatbacks and cushions to apply pressure to the passenger’s back and lower hip area to promote both physical and emotional relaxation.

Such has been the level of detail and care invested in this project, passengers can choose from no fewer than seven different massage programmes, each progressing through a 15-minute cycle.

A warming function integrated in the rear seat is a world’s first - with the two dedicated heaters—located in the shoulder and lower back parts of the seat—warm these specific areas without warming a person’s entire body.

The result is an unprecedented opportunity to make travelling by car an exceptionally relaxing experience.

lexus,2012 LS,2018 ls

That’s why car manufacturers continue to use it as a signal of the quality the vehicles they make.

For Lexus it is not simply a matter of applying pieces of wooden trim. For its new LS flagship sedan it has explored at new ways of working with veneers to produce unique designs that distinguish the car from any other, creating a new aesthetic that discerning owners will value.

It has carefully selected the ideal raw materials and applied the skills of its Takumi master craftsmen to create Art Wood, a fusion of the natural beauty of wood and Lexus brave design.

Inspired by the patterns seen in Shimamoku wood, it has artistically combined natural woodworking processes with sophisticated Japanese slicing and laser-cutting techniques to produce three contrasting finishes for use in the new LS: Art Wood Organic, Art Wood Herringbone and Laser Cut Special Wood. The focus has been on producing bold contrasts between light and dark, giving the grain patterns and colours a more vibrant appearance.

Art Wood Organic is inspired by a blazing fire and took more than a year’s work to define. By layering the wood and applying a natural gloss coating to enhance the vibrancy of the grain, an impression of flickering flames is produced.

The wood is sustainably and responsibly sourced from the Agathis tree, a species native to Southeast Asia. Thin veneer sheets are stacked in multiple layers and then precision-sliced across the grain by the Takumi to produce the ultimate pattern. The striking curves and bold contrasts this process produces mark a new approach by Lexus, with strong appeal for people who value distinctive quality and forward-looking design.

And, because the grain patterns in a piece of wood are as unique as your fingerprint, in every LS the appearance and effect will be slightly different, further emphasising the individuality of every car Lexus builds.

You will find the Art Wood details in key areas around the new LS’s interior, for example in the gear lever and door handles surrounds where they complement the use of fine leathers and co-ordinated colourways to contribute to the cabin’s high aesthetic quality and superior ambience.

lexus,2012 LS,2018 ls

For Lexus, it is about seamlessly anticipating your needs with the hospitality principles enshrined in Omotenashi and providing a luxurious interior space, rich in Takumi craftsmanship. With the new LS flagship sedan it is taking these qualities to an unprecedented level.

As an example of the exquisite detailing customers can expect, Lexus has made its new Lexus LS unique among contemporary vehicles by using hand-cut glass to create distinctive and beautiful ornamentation, inspired by fine Japanese Kiriko glassware.

A world first for a production vehicle, it’s a perfect example of how Lexus is using Japanese craftsmanship to create innovative elegance.

Masters of Kiriko worked closely with Lexus designers and engineers to replicate the hand-carved appearance of their glasswork. Traditional Kiriko patterns are created by hand cutting clear colours and delicate lines in the glass, which is then repeatedly polished to a soft glow.

The new LS features the Kiriko glass in a section of the door panel, striking a rich visual and tactile contrast with the stitched leather upholstery, cool metal release handle, and hand-pleated Alcantara surfacing. Although the glasswork looks beautiful and delicate, it is in fact remarkably strong, thanks to advanced glass reinforcement technology.

The finished design gives the LS a distinctive, artistic quality that exemplifies Lexus’ attention to detail.

Chief Designer of the LS, Koichi Suga, is proud of the results: “This special ornamentation represents the best of both worlds – it is an industrial product that is also a work of art. Its look and feel, like the hand-pleated door panel fabric, changes according the angle at which you look at it, and the time of day.”

lexus,2012 LS,2018 ls

2018 LEXUS LS TAKUMI CRAFTSMANSHIP stories. Chapter 1: Origami fabric pleating

<pp:caseid>235317</pp:caseid>

The design innovation invested in the new Lexus LS luxury sedan includes intriguing details that capture the essence of Takumi craftsmanship, giving the car an appeal that goes beyond the qualities customers might expect from a modern luxury car.

Lexus has taken a new approach to creating new trim elements, turning to Japanese culture for inspiration and combining traditional aesthetics with advanced manufacturing technologies. For the customer, this is not just about something that looks and feels good, but which also captures the imagination.

Take, for example, the draped pleating of the door panels, an effect created by applying the time-honoured skills of Origami paper folding.

This interpretation of a traditional Japanese artform was a key part of Chief Designer Koichi Suga’s vision for the car: “As a Japanese luxury brand, we wanted to integrate elements of Japanese culture and the timeless appeal of Japanese craftsmanship to express the artistic side of Lexus.”

Suga outlined his ideas to a colour designer, who worked with a skilled fabric artisan from Kyoto. Together they produced Hand Pleats, a new fabric pleating technique that creates a three-dimensional pattern that is pleasing to the eye and touch.

It took four years to develop the hand-pleating upholstery process, which can only be carried out by human hand. It mirrors the work of the finest Origami artists, requiring individual lengths of a fabric cloth to be expertly folded like a sheet of paper, with each fold carefully overlapping the next to create the desired pleating effect.

Inside the LS, the interplay of light and shadow across the three-dimensional upholstery panels adds to the sense of an elegant, enveloping space. Such is the level of craftsmanship required, the pleated door panels are an exclusive feature in the new LS that will only be available to customers in selected markets.

For Suga, the results are perfect: “The pattern in the fabric has the ability to change its appearance and character, whether it is struck by daytime sunlight or illuminated by the LS’ interior lighting at night. The result is a comfortable space that envelops the driver and passengers in elegance.”

lexus,2012 LS,2018 ls

Radical new design with coupe-like silhouette, yet spaciousness of prestige sedan

New platform for greatest-ever LS agility and comfort

All-new twin-turbo V6 with 416 horsepower / 421 PS (310 kW)1 /417 PS (307 kW)2

10-speed automatic transmission

All-new Lexus Safety System + A available

New level of flagship luxury in every aspect

Interior inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics

On sale in Europe from early 2018

It is entirely possible that no single automobile has, upon its introduction, upended a deeply established category as decisively as the first Lexus LS did when it launched the luxury brand 28 years ago. The original luxury disruptor, the Lexus LS has for nearly three decades set benchmarks for powertrain smoothness, ride quietness, craftsmanship, attention to detail, documented dependability and long-term quality.

The Lexus brand supported that ground-breaking vehicle by setting and maintaining new standards for the customer experience and satisfaction. Now, Lexus is repeating history with the introduction of the all-new, fifth-generation LS flagship sedan for 2018. Inside and out, the new LS reflects a strong, uniquely Japanese identity and approach to luxury. Yet the all-new LS was designed to be the brand’s latest global citizen, available in over 90 countries.

“Not only will the LS symbolize the Lexus brand, it will become the definitive new-generation luxury car embodying Japanese tradition and culture,” said Toshio Asahi, chief engineer for the new LS. “As such, this global pinnacle must go far beyond what the world expects from a luxury car.”

LONGER, LOWER, WIDER – AND MORE EXCITING

Longer and lower than the model it replaces, the all-new LS debuts a strikingly sleek and bold design with a coupe-like silhouette punctuated by the unique Lexus design language. A new driver-centric performance feel stems from building the LS on the company’s all-new global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA‑L). This premium rear-wheel drive platform, an extended version of the one used for the stunning new Lexus LC 500 coupe, offers a more dynamic driving experience while further elevating renowned Lexus comfort.

The original Lexus LS won acclaim by anticipating what luxury customers would want, rather than by simply amplifying what established luxury automobile brands offered at the time. In that spirit, the 2018 LS sedan’s spacious cabin, unique appointments, and visionary technology will once again surprise customers by resetting expectations for a global flagship sedan.

“We set previously unheard of targets and resolutely pushed ahead towards these ambitious goals,” said LS chief engineer Asahi. “The customers who are going to want to own a Lexus flagship are already surrounded by luxury on a daily basis — people who have a sharp eye for authenticity to begin with. We wouldn’t turn their heads with a conventional premium product.”

A FLAGSHIP REBORN

The original LS launched the Lexus brand; the all-new 2018 LS is a critical touchstone in advancing the brand’s more dynamic direction. Each generation of LS sedan leading up to the all-new 2018 iteration has advanced the state of luxury, craftsmanship, performance and safety in its own way. The most recent also introduced a far more emotional design and engaging on-road performance, setting the stage for its even more dramatic successor.

To create the 2018 LS, Lexus took the approach of starting from new, reimagining what a flagship sedan should be, as if launching the brand once again. The goal was not to improve on what Lexus has done, but to exceed expectations of global luxury customers.

A common thread through all LS models remains: Omotenashi, the concept of Japanese hospitality. Applied to a luxury automobile, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them from hazards.

CRAFTING A UNIQUE IDENTITY

“The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand,” said chief designer, Koichi Suga. “More than any other model, it embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brand stands for.”

Lexus designers took full advantage of the new platform, with its lower profile and length on par with that of a prestige long-wheelbase sedan, to give the new LS a stretched, ground-hugging appearance. Compared to the outgoing LS, the new model is about 6 inches / 15 mm lower, while the hood and trunk are approximately 1.2 inches / 30 mm and 1.6 inches /40 mm lower, respectively.

Following the “Yet” philosophy that has been passed on since the first-generation LS, Lexus created a design offering the room and comfort of a prestige “three-box” sedan, yet with the more striking coupe-like silhouette that holds stronger appeal for many of today’s luxury customers. The new LS is also the first Lexus sedan with a six-window profile, which enables excellent outward visibility. Also a first for a Lexus sedan, the flush-surface windows smoothly integrate with the side pillar.

The unique rendition of the spindle grille mesh, with a texture that seemingly changes in changing light, is the result of both intense CAD development and hand-adjusting thousands of individual surfaces. Flanking the unique grille, the narrow slit-like 3-projector lamp merges with an L-shaped LED lamp that wraps broadly around to the side to give the front of the LS a resolute gaze.

The coupe-like silhouette is not due solely to the fastback roof style. Maximizing the GA‑L platform’s low form, the pillars of the cabin taper from the central position of the occupants. Together with the contrast between the pulled-in doors and the front and rear fenders that flare away from the central position of the occupants, this creates a dynamic form.

A front to the rear shoulder line gives the vehicle’s basic posture a low stance with a horizontal axis and a bold appearance. Additionally, the axes of the dramatically flared front and rear fenders are slanted forwards, creating a dynamic impression that evokes driving performance.

On all 2018 LS models, an outer slide-type sunroof preserves headroom with the lower roofline.

The 2018 LS debuts two new 19-inch wheel designs and three 20-inch wheel designs, two of which are also new. The 20-inch premium wheels employ a brilliant appearance created using an electroplating technique known as sputtering. All but one (F SPORT) of the new wheel designs feature a hollow rim structure that helps reduce resonant sounds generated by the tires.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS

More than ever before, luxury sedan drivers demand greater handling agility and performance feel, but without sacrificing comfort. It’s one of the most difficult balances to achieve in a vehicle, yet the new Lexus GA–L platform easily meets this challenge.

The GA‑L platform is the stiffest in Lexus history, setting the stage for enhanced handling, ride smoothness and cabin quietness. The 123-inch / 3125 mm wheelbase is 1.3-inch / 35 mm longer than the outgoing LS long-wheelbase model. The new wide and low LS design optimizes the center of gravity and weight distribution.

Helping to provide the uncanny ride and handling balance in the new LS is the latest generation of a chassis control technology, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), which was first introduced in 2005. This system implements cooperative control of all available vehicle subsystems – ABS, Traction Control (TRAC/TRC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Electric Power Steering (EPS), Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) and Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) to control basic longitudinal, lateral and vertical motion as well as yaw, roll and pitch.

The all-new GA‑L vehicle architecture that underpins the LS is the result of a completely new approach to engineering, materials and loads of the vehicle structure. Rather than starting from existing vehicle platform and then figuring out how to modify it to fit the LS’ shape and strengthen it to support contemporary chassis dynamics, Lexus engineers literally started with a clean sheet of paper – a blank CAD screen– in designing the new structure.

Examples of this can be easily seen underhood, where new cast-aluminum suspension towers that support the upper spring seats and suspension mounts are visible above each front wheel. Since aluminum and steel can’t be welded together with conventional techniques, the joint attaching the aluminum tower casting to the steel body structure is made with self-piercing rivets and high-strength adhesive bonding; similar processes are used to secure the aluminum rear suspension towers to the body structure behind the back seats. Compared to structures with similar capabilities in steel, this technology is 42 percent lighter at the front; in the rear the aluminum structure has 1.5 times the rigidity of steel with 50 percent less weight.

In creating the new LS, engineers used lightweight materials including ultra-high tensile hot stamped steel and other steel alloys in critical areas with tensile strengths from 590 up to 1180 MPa and aluminum. In fact, the 2018 LS has a high tensile steel mass composition of nearly 30 percent, which is more than double was present in the previous-generation LS (14.1 percent). The new, highly rigid LS platform and the new twin-turbo V6 engine enable a more dynamic driving experience.

A combination of special body adhesive and the use of Laser Screw Welding, a proprietary laser welding process proven on other recent Lexus models, increases panel joint rigidity and gives the LS a feeling of exceptional strength and solidity.

Critical to its driving performance, the new platform lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity by placing most of its mass, including the engine and the occupants in positions more centralized and lower in the chassis. Special braces in the engine compartment, stiff aluminum front and rear suspension towers, and other features help bolster the strength of key chassis structures.

LS models have long set benchmarks for suspension compliance, yet even here Lexus saw opportunity for further gains. For example, the all-new multilink front suspension employs double ball joints on the upper and lower control arms to help allow for control of the smallest movements from the driver inputs and road conditions. This unique dual-ball joint arrangement optimizes suspension geometry to increase wheel control and yield more precise steering response with better initial effort. To reduce unsprung weight and aid agility and comfort, aluminum is used extensively in the suspension.

Like the previous LS, the all-new model offers an available air suspension system that further refines the already sublime ride quality. A new, more advanced version of Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) continually adjusts damping control in response to driving operations and road surface conditions. “Continually” is the key word, because Lexus increased the damping-force switching levels from the previous model’s nine to 650 in the 2018 LS. The result is faster, more seamless and refined operation.

The new AVS system effectively provides both shock isolation and a flat ride even on road surfaces with large undulations as well as small, rough areas. The result is enhanced steering response and stability along with greater ride comfort. As a real-world example, when driving an AVS-equipped 2018 LS in an urban setting over a rough surface, the system can increase ride comfort without increasing damping force too much. Yet, when the steering wheel is turned, damping force increases to suppress unwanted weight transfer and preserve flat cornering.

LS PERFORMANCE AND SMOOTHNESS REDEFINED: TWIN-TURBO V6 AND 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION

For high power, scintillating performance and excellent fuel efficiency, Lexus designed an all-new 60-degree 3.5-liter V6 engine specifically for the new LS. This engine has an undersquare design for improved thermal efficiency coupled with twin turbochargers, and has benefitted from the company’s F1 technology. This new LS engine is indicative of the more dynamic approach being taken by Lexus, offering V8-level power in a more compact package with efficiency and refinement.

The new LS engine offers the output one would expect in a flagship sedan: 416 horsepower / 421 PS (310 kW)1 /417 PS (307 kW)2 and 442 lb-ft / 600 Nm of torque, significant gains over the outgoing LS model’s naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 (386 horsepower / 387 PS /285 kW and 367 lb-ft / 493 Nm). The engine’s long stroke, optimized 0.86 bore-to-stroke ratio, increased valve angle, straight intake ports and laser-clad intake valve seats developed using performance simulations based on F1 technology combine to yield world top-level high-speed combustion technology and thermal efficienc.

The twin turbochargers were designed and produced in-house to control tolerances and quality. They achieve top-level mechanical efficiency by improving exhaust energy recovery using a curved turbine blade shape and increased blade length, along with die-cast compressor housings and improved surface precision. Electric wastegates provide ultra-precise turbo boost control for seamless, lag-free power buildup. The intercoolers are cooled by engine coolant for higher performance and efficiency.

A special version of Lexus’ D 4S gasoline direct injection plus port injection system was developed to improve injection control linked to turbocharger operation. Called D 4ST, this system controls new six hole direct injectors and the port fuel injectors to take advantage of the turbochargers and the high tumble ratio of the engine.

Twin water-to-air intercoolers reduce the temperature of air pressurized by turbocharging. The intercoolers are mounted on top of the engine, each in a direct path between its turbocharger and intake throttle to reduce volume and lag in the intake tract.

Remarkable powertrain smoothness, a Lexus hallmark, begins deep inside the cylinder block, where a ladder frame support for the crankshaft main bearings adds rigidity for low vibration. Redesigned engine mounts, the electric wastegates and numerous other features also contribute to the engine’s ultra-smooth demeanor.

The new LS 500 sees a 0-100 time of 4.9 sec. Perhaps more critical to driving enjoyment, though, is how Lexus tuned the engine and transmission to deliver instant acceleration and a constant buildup of torque toward the engine’s redline. The driver can tailor powertrain response and feel by choosing from Normal, Sport S or Sport S+ modes. Just enough of the exhaust note can be heard to enhance the sporty feel.

The first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission for a premium passenger car, having debuted in the Lexus LC 500, is now also used in the new LS 500 gas models. It is a torque converter automatic, yet with shift times that rival those of dual-clutch transmissions. The wide bandwidth afforded by 10 closely spaced ratios is ideal for all driving situations. Using aluminum for the clutch drum, clutch hub and planetary carrier reduce rotating mass; coupled with shortened internal oil passages and smaller, faster shift solenoids results in quicker shifts. These improvements, plus a resin plastic transmission oil pan, yield a 10-speed transmission weighing the same as the previous 8-speed gearbox.

The LS features steering wheel shifter paddles. However, even drivers who might enjoy controlling gearshifts manually will be duly impressed by the automatic mode’s advanced electronic control system. The artificial intelligence transmission logic (AI-Shift Control) anticipates the driver’s input by monitoring acceleration, braking and lateral-g forces to execute perfectly timed, ultra-quick shifts

For starting acceleration, the close ratios of the low gears and the short shift times enable a rhythmical and exhilarating acceleration feel. The high torque of the twin-turbo engine matches ideally with the higher gear ratios for effortless, serene highway cruising, yet very quick downshifts yield direct acceleration with no lag in G response. To provide a direct feel, while also supporting fuel efficiency, torque converter lock-up activates in all ranges except when starting off.

The available AWD system features a Torsen® limited-slip center differential to further enhance grip, traction and cornering stability. The torque distribution can vary from 31 percent front / 69 percent rear on dry roads to as much as 48 percent front / 52 percent rear on slick surfaces.

PROGRESSIVE COMFORT WITH TRADITIONAL INSPIRATION

Creating a new standard of flagship luxury is not simply a matter of adding more features and technology. Inspired by the omotenashi principle, Lexus sought to instill the new LS cabin with luxury that welcomes and envelops passengers while treating the driver like a partner.

“I hope that when you open the door you’ll experience an immediate, intuitive sense that you’re looking at an interior that is unlike any luxury car before,” said Chief Designer Suga.

New seating designs include available 28-way power adjustable front seats. Combining electric motors with a new pneumatic control system allows fine adjustment of the entire seat with minimal weight and bulk; heating and massage are included. A Warming Function (spot heater) in the rear seat is a world first. Two dedicated heaters—located in the shoulder and lower back areas of the seat—warm these specific areas without warming a person’s entire body.

The organically shaped dash design clusters information displays at a uniform height to support the “seat-in-control” layout that emphasizes the driver’s ability to operate all systems without changing body posture.

CABIN COUTURE

The 2018 LS 500 offers a choice of nine interior color schemes, plus two for the F SPORT (F-White, Black and White, and Flare Circuit Red). In addition, nine choices in interior trim are available, including the exclusive Naguri-style aluminum for the F SPORT.

Nearly all elements are upholstery-wrapped, and a high level of craftsmanship has been applied even to the finer details, resulting in an elegant finish with a sense of depth. For example, the higher-grade seats feature quilting, and the perforation pattern on the F SPORT front seats has the same L-shaped mesh pattern as the car’s front grille.

The available L-aniline leather is the brand’s most luxurious leather ever, made using only the top one percent of carefully selected North American hides tanned by a special process ensures maximum softness, producing material that is 30 percent smoother than semi-aniline leather.

Inspired by Shimamoku wood patterns, the new forms that combine the artistic combination of natural woodwork and application of Japan’s sophisticated sliced wood and laser-cutting manufacturing technologies are used for the new LS. New patterns, including Art Wood Organic, Art Wood Herringbone and Laser Cut Special Wood feature bolder contrasts between light and dark, giving the wood a more vibrant appearance.

Art Wood Organic was inspired by a “blazing fire”, and took over a year to create. By layering the wood and applying a natural gloss coating to enhance the vibrancy of the grain, the resulting pattern gives the impression of a flickering flame.

Art Wood Herringbone features wood mosaic craftsmanship similar to that used for decorating musical instruments. Natural wood pieces are individually handcrafted by a Takumi craftsperson to create a delicate, Lexus-original mosaic, with an L-motif pattern subtly blended into the herringbone design.

To create the Laser Cut Special wood trim, a cutting and forming technology is utilized to expose beautiful metal lines beneath the natural wood veneer that can be seen and felt.

THE INTERSECTION OF TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY

A new approach to creating trim elements again turned to Japanese culture, combining traditional Japanese aesthetics with advanced manufacturing techniques. This is reflected in signature touches, such as beautiful interior ambient lighting inspired by Japanese Andon lanterns and armrests that appear to float next to the door panel.

On Luxury models, Kiriko Glass ornamentation and available hand-folded pleats on the door trim perfectly illustrate the brand’s “Innovative elegance through Japanese craftsmanship” and exemplify a true handcrafted approach.

The striking cut glass ornamentation – a world first in a production vehicle - draws inspiration from Japanese Kiriko glassware. Traditional Kiriko patterns are created using a technique that involves hand-cutting clear colors and delicate lines in a piece of glass, which are then repeatedly polished to a soft glow. For the 2018 LS, Kiriko master craftsmen worked closely with Lexus designers and engineers to duplicate the hand-carved appearance of Kiriko cut glass using leading-edge laser data copying and polishing technology. For those not choosing the Luxury model, the look of the Kiriko cut glass pattern ornamentation has been adopted for the display zone in front of the passenger seat.

The Hand-pleated Upholstery is produced using a process that took four years to develop—and that can be done only by human hands. A single cloth sheet is folded like origami paper, each fold carefully overlapped with the next, creating a dramatic pleated effect. The effect of the light and the three-dimensional upholstery creates an elegant space that envelops the occupants.

Integrated into the LS 500’s cabin is the next-generation Remote Touch Interface, designed to mimic smartphone operation and supporting handwritten input. In addition to its 12.3-inch wide navigation display, the LS can incorporate an optional 24-inch color heads-up display (HUD)—the largest in the world—that projects a variety of information onto the driver’s forward view.

ENVELOPING REAR SEAT LUXURY

While making the new LS even more of a driver’s car, Lexus also optimized the LS as a car in which to be driven, lavishing considerable attention to the rear seat. The rear cabin design creates seamless, enveloping continuity between the trim and seatbacks for passenger egress.

Options for heating, and massage make the rear seat a welcoming environment. The available power front and rear seat with Shiatsu massage and a raised ottoman, part of the Executive Package, offers more legroom than any previous-generation LS (3.4 in. / 86 mm more than the outgoing model). In addition, the seat behind the front passenger can be reclined up to 48 degrees (largest angle in the segment), and can be raised up to 24 degrees to assist the rear-seat passenger exiting the vehicle.

Available rear “Relaxation Seats” with a warming function use air bladders integrated into the seatback and seat cushion. These are inflated to strategically apply pressure to the occupant’s body, while also applying warmth to the shoulder and lower back areas. The occupant can select from three full-body programs (“Refresh”, “Stretch” and “Simple”) and four that target specific areas (“Upper Body”, “Lower Body”, “Shoulder”,” and “Lumbar”).

Because the new LS is lower than previous versions, Lexus for the first time equipped the available air suspension with an access function. Activated by unlocking the car with the smart key, access mode automatically raises the vehicle and widens the seat bolsters to welcome drivers behind the wheel.

THE NEW LS F SPORT

The new LS 500 F SPORT instills a more engaging driving spirit through carefully applied chassis tuning and enhancements, while still emphasizing exceptional comfort.

Lexus took full advantage of the new GA–L platform’s inherent driving agility when developing the 2018 F SPORT package. Handling enhancements via the latest iteration of the VDIM system allows for integrated management of these chassis dynamics as a single system. Optimal control of these motions enables exceptional ride comfort, enhancing traction, safety and handling agility. VDIM is capable of aiding stability when the car is traversing split-friction surfaces, such as dry pavement with ice.

More of the platform’s intrinsic performance capability is unlocked via exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels with 245/45RF20 front and 275/40RF20 rear tires in either summer performance or all-season compounds. In addition, larger front and rear brakes — six-piston aluminum monoblock calipers on front around two-piece ventilated spiral-fin iron rotors 400 mm in diameter by 36 mm wide and four-piston calipers on 359 mm by 30 mm ventilated spiral-fin rotors in the rear, all with high-friction brake pads — serve to drive the car’s dynamic message home. The available Performance Package on RWD gas F SPORT models adds Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system Active Rear Steering The result is a full-size premium luxury sedan that responds more like a sports coupe through curves, without sacrificing renowned Lexus ride comfort.

The 2018 LS 500 F SPORT stands out, but doesn’t shout. It essentially “turns up the volume” of the new LS design, so to speak, without distorting the fidelity. An exclusive version of the spindle grille shows even greater intricacy in the design – and the brand’s obsessive attention to details. CAD operators spent five months developing the F SPORT grille to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light. Even then, they adjusted 7,100 individual surfaces to achieve the desired look and texture (compared to 5,000 for the standard model’s grille).

Special F SPORT rocker moldings along with the aforementioned 20-inch wheels accentuate the rakish LS profile. Lexus infused the F SPORT persona throughout the cabin, starting with the perforated-grill pattern on seating surfaces and Naguri aluminum trim elements. F SPORT 28-way electric/pneumatic seats with cushion length extenders brace occupants when driving through curves, ensure exceptional comfort no matter how long or brief the drive.

The driver faces a special F SPORT speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter with a meter ring that slides to display information, an iconic design adapted from the limited-production Lexus LFA supercar. Attention to detail shows in the aluminum accelerator pedal and F SPORT shift handle, and footrest. The crowning touch is an Ultrasuede shoulder section.

THE SOUNDS OF NEAR SILENCE—OR STIRRING MUSIC

Lexus tuned the LS exhaust to convey a more authoritative tone, yet also designed the cabin to ensure utterly quiet cruising. New sound suppression methods further hush the environment compared even to the super-quiet previous LS models. Active Noise Control quiets the cabin even more by detecting the sound of the engine coming into the vehicle and cancelling certain frequencies using antiphase sound from the audio speakers.

The serenity of the LS cabin provides an ideal stage for the standard premium audio system or the new audiophile-worthy available 3D surround Mark Levinson QLI Reference Surround Sound System. Employing Quantum Logic Immersion technology (QLI), Clari-Fi music restoration technology and 23 speakers in 16 locations throughout the car (including the rear ceiling), and a 16-channel Mark Levinson Reference Amplifier producing the equivalent of 2400 watts with 0.05 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) it offers an audio experience unparalleled in any Lexus.

ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES AND DRIVER SUPPORT

“The LS is designed to be the top runner in advanced safety technologies” said Lexus LS Chief Engineer Toshio Asahi. As a flagship that pioneers a new age, the all-new Lexus LS provides world-leading safety technology through the combination of two advanced Lexus safety systems—Lexus Safety System + and Lexus Safety System + A—which are ultimately aimed at reducing traffic fatalities. The active safety package Lexus Safety System + has been combined with Lexus Safety System + A.

The Lexus Safety System + A package includes Active Steering Assist, a world-first technology that can help prevent collisions that cannot be avoided through automatic braking alone, and Front Cross Traffic Alert, which is designed to warn the driver of the possibility of collisions with vehicles approaching from either side at road intersections. In addition, Lexus CoDrive can assist the driver in staying in lane. Together, these features and others can deliver a high level of safe driving support.

The new LS is also equipped with other technologies for safer and more secure driving in a wide range of situations. The support they provide has been designed to be clear and intuitive, for example in the use of a large, colour head-up display (HUD) and multi-information display to present status notifications and information on vehicle behaviour when safety features are being deployed.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + PACKAGE

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM

Lexus’ Pre-Collision system (PCS) can help the driver avoid a collision, or lessen the consequences of an impact, even at high speed.

PCS uses a millimetre-wave radar and camera mounted on the front of the car to scan the road ahead to detect obstacles or hazards. It functions both when driving straight ahead and when cornering. It also computes data collected from sensors around the car monitoring factors such as vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs. This information helps the PCS determine the risk of a rear-end collision with a vehicle ahead.

If it calculates a high risk of an impact, it will trigger a warning buzzer and light up a “BRAKE” command in the multi-information display to alert the driver to take action. The moment the brake pedal is pressed, the system initiates a Pre-Collision Brake to provide optimum braking force. This can achieve deceleration of up to 40km/h, slowing the vehicle to reduce the severity of any impact, or potentially bringing the car to a stop before an impact occurs.

If the driver fails to respond to the alerts and does not apply the brakes, the Pre-Collision Brake will automatically deploy to reduce the vehicle’s speed.

PCS also provides a pedestrian protection function. If a pedestrian is detected in the vehicle’s path, automatic braking will be activated. This operates when the Lexus is travelling at between 10 and 80km/h.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

The PCS’ radar is also used to provide Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, working down to very low speeds and standstill. Once the way ahead is clear, the ACC will automatically and smoothly accelerate the vehicle back to its pre-selected cruising speed. If the car has been brought to a halt, the driver simply has to press the accelerator briefly for the system to be reactivated.

The ACC can operate in two modes: constant speed control, like a conventional cruise control system, or vehicle-to-vehicle distance control. With the latter mode, the driver can set long, medium or short vehicle-to-vehicle distances, according to preference or traffic conditions. The control settings selected are shown on the multi-information display.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT

Lane Departure Alert uses the PCS camera, mounted on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror, to track the vehicle’s course between lane markings painted on the road surface. If it detects that car is moving out of its lane without the turn indicators being used, it will light up a warning on the multi-information display and sound a buzzer, prompting the driver to steer back to the correct path. On the new NX, the driver will also experience haptic feedback through the steering wheel as an additional warning.

ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM

An adjustable LED Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) prevents the LS from dazzling other road users. Eleven independent LED chips in each headlight are enabled/disabled for precise control of the illuminated and non-illuminated areas. This means the driver can enjoy maximum, safe use of high beam lighting, improving their field of vision without the risk of dazzling other road users.

ROAD SIGN ASSIST

Road Sign Assist recognises traffic signs using the windscreen-mounted camera, repeating the information on the multi-information display. This helps prevent the risk of the driver failing to notice important warnings or commands on major routes, including speed limits and lane closures. The system can detect signs that are designed according to the international standards of the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + A PACKAGE

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM WITH PEDESTRIAN ALERT AND ACTIVE STEERING ASSIST

The new LS is the first Lexus model to be equipped with a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Alert and Active Steering Assist, in addition to its established functions. This is a world-first technology that can pinpoint the location of a pedestrian and automatically control the car’s steering and braking.

With Pedestrian Alert, if there is a possibility of the vehicle colliding with a pedestrian ahead, the position of the pedestrian is shown in an animated graphic on the head-up display, contributing to the driver’s intuitive recognition of the situation. Pre-Collision System determines when there is a high risk of a collision with a pedestrian in the lane of travel, or with a continuous structure, such as a guardrail. If it calculates that that brake control alone will be insufficient to avoid a collision, steering assistance is provided, in addition to a driver alert and braking. When Active Steering Assist is deployed, the car will only move within a clearly marked lane. The system automatically checks for any vehicles in the car’s blind spots, including motorcycles.

LEXUS CODRIVE ADVANCED DRIVING ASSIST TECHNOLOGY

Lexus CoDrive adds Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to the functions of the Adaptive Cruise Control to provide steering support in line with the driver’s intentions. It can significantly reduce the burden on the driver by providing seamless driving support on roads with many bends, or in traffic jams. It is co-ordinated with the head-up and multi-information displays to give the driver clear notification of the status of the support being provided.

LANE TRACING ASSIST

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) provides lane-keeping support by way of steering control when Adaptive Cruise Control is in operation. As well as camera detection of lane markings, the system will trace the path of the vehicle ahead to enable assistance even when lines cannot be recognised, for example when driving in low-speed congestion, when there is little space between vehicles.

TWO-STAGE ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM

The two-stage Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) provides optimal lighting by way of separate on/off control of the two rows of LEDs – eight upper and 16 lower – in each headlight. This enables finer control of light strength and distance compared to the current LED-based AHS. This improves night-time visibility by allowing more frequent driving with the headlights on high beam, without dazzling preceding or oncoming vehicles.

FRONT CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT

Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) is designed to help prevent collisions at intersections by detecting approaching vehicles. Using side-looking radars, the advanced system alerts driver to a vehicle approaching an intersection ahead from either side. If the driver proceeds, regardless of there being another vehicle approaching from left or right, warnings are given by a buzzer and on the LS’ multi-information display.

ROAD SIGN ASSIST

The Road Sign Assist (RSA) in the new LS makes use of navigation maps as well as a camera to acquire road sign information, which it then presents on the vehicle’s head-up and multi-information displays, reducing the risk of the driver failing to recognise signs and encouraging safe driving.

IMPROVEMENTS TO LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + FUNCTIONS

Lexus has further evolved the performance of the PCS, LDA and Adaptive Cruise Control in Lexus Safety System +, featured in combination with Lexus Safety System + A in the new LS.

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM

The improved Pre-Collision System (PCS) can detect cyclists and night-time pedestrians and has improved deceleration performance during automatic braking. For example it can slow the vehicle by as much as 60km/h when a pedestrian is detected, thus improving its collision prevention performance.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT

As well as detecting lane markings on the road surface, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) will also be able to recognise the boundaries between asphalt and other elements, such as grass, dirt or kerbstones, thanks to advances in its recognition capability. This will allow it to perform its functions of alerting the driver and adjusting steering feedback and torque to encourage a return to the correct line, even on roads without line markings.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

The Adaptive Cruise Control achieves outstanding basic recognition performance with wide-angle detection, using a new millimetre-wave radar and a camera with a wider forward recognition range. The system also helps make driving more comfortable, with smooth acceleration at start-up and during following, departure and acceleration, for a sense of security for occupants. It also gives smooth deceleration in the case of a rapid change in in speed.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVE SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

The new LS will further benefit from additional active safety technologies that will help protect the vehicle and occupants by alerting the driver to collision risks when parking and providing a view of the area immediately around the vehicle when manoeuvring or cornering.

PARKING SUPPORT BRAKE

The LS’s low-speed braking support systems have been integrated in a single package, with the aim of reducing damage when parking, when the driver needs to take account of nearby moving vehicles and pedestrians and stationary objects such as walls and street furniture. The world’s first rear pedestrian support brake has been added to the existing Intelligent Parking Sensors and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking.

Side clearance view produces an image on the LS’s display monitor that shows the area in front of the car as if seen from a high position above the rear of the vehicle, giving the driver better sight of the space on each side of the car, for example when passing another car on a narrow road. When side clearance view is operating, cornering view automatically produces an image of the vehicle as seen from the rear at an angle in line with the car’s direction when moving through a bend or turn. These help the driver confirm left or right turns can be made safely

Since its launch in 2014, the NX crossover has quickly established itself as a key player in the Lexus range making up more than 30% of Lexus European sales since its launch. It has been successfully attracting customers – many of them new to the brand – with its combination of luxury, cool, contemporary design, intelligent packaging and enjoyable driving dynamics. Its sales success is further supported by a choice of full hybrid and petrol-electric engines, plus front and all-wheel drive options.

Its performance has been stronger than even Lexus anticipated, breaking sales forecasts in all the world markets where it is available, including Europe. To build on that momentum and maintain the NX’s strong appeal, Lexus has initiated a package of revisions and improvements, covering exterior and interior styling, safety and equipment features. The new NX makes its European debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA).

EXTERIOR STYLING REFINEMENTS

Lexus has preserved the strong design essence of the NX that has proved so appealing to customers and has focused on details that enhance its visual impact.

The signature spindle grille has a powerful new look that aligns it more closely with Lexus’ SUV models, the RX and LX. The design features a series of horizontal bars that extend all the way down to the lower lip. Wider spacing between the bars below the central pinch-point of the spindle emphasises the car’s width and adds a sense strength to the NX’s frontal appearance. This effect is accentuated by the introduction of larger, deeply recessed lateral air intake ducts, angled to emphasise the car’s broad stance.

Reshaping of the upper part of the front bumper creates a more fluid blending of the styling into the bonnet and front doors, creating a sleeker overall shape with excellent aerodynamics.

The LED headlamp units have a new internal arrangement to accommodate the Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), part of the Lexus Safety System + package that is newly available for the NX. The look is sporty and echoes the lighting design of the new LC luxury coupe. Sequential turn indicators are also new, both at the front and rear.

At the back, changes to the lower section of the rear bumper introduce elements of the spindle grille shape, amplifying the sense of a wide stance and low centre of gravity. New rear lamp clusters have an elongated shape with a black garnish that adds emphasis to the L-shaped lenses. On the petrol models – now re-named NX 300 – there are larger, chrome-framed exhaust outlets, while larger satin chrome trims have been added on the full hybrid NX 300h to accentuate the spindle motif.

Two new 18-inch alloy wheel designs are featured for Luxury and F SPORT models, both with a striking combination of bright machined and dark metallic finishes.

INTERIOR: AN AUTHENTIC DRIVER’S ENVIRONMENT WITH ADDED CONVENIENCE

The interior of the NX benefits from detailed changes that project a sportier character and an even more luxurious feel. There is also a focus on improving the ease of use, convenience and comfort of the equipment features, faithful to Lexus’ commitment to the principles of Omotenashi hospitality.

The most prominent change is in increase in size for the central multimedia display. In the case of the Lexus Premium Navigation, the screen has grown from seven to 10.3 inches, while for the Lexus Display Audio, the increase is from seven to eight inches.

The climate control panel in the centre console has been rendered more ergonomically efficient with a number of buttons being replaced by four easy-to-operate toggle switches. These have a high tactile quality with a raised pattern of small metallic Lexus L motifs. The central analogue clock has been made larger, with a clearer face and a more pronounced outer ring. As well as being easier to read, it has a GPS control that automatically adjusts the time as you drive through different time zones.

On the centre console, the NX features the latest generation touchpad control, larger in size for easier operation. The palm rest has been reshaped to provide better wrist support and the wireless charging tray has been made wider and longer to accommodate larger smartphones. The USB ports have been moved to a handier central position and have a higher amperage for faster charging of devices. On models equipped with a head-up display, the unit is now seamlessly integrated into the instrument panel, creating a smooth surface across the top of the dashboard.

NEW INTERIOR COLOUR OPTIONS

There are new colour options for the NX, with the addition of Rich Cream and Ochre upholstery and trim, together with the established White Ochre, Black and Dark Rose. Flare Red and Mustard Yellow are both new for the NX F SPORT models.

POWER REAR DOOR

The new NX gains the convenience of a power rear door with “no-touch” opening and closing function – when you approach the vehicle with the key on your person, all you need to do to open the door is move your foot beneath the rear bumper, where the motion will be picked up by a sensor. The tailgate

can be closed with a similar action. A lock reserve button next to the tailgate grab handle automatically locks the vehicle.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

The new NX gains the benefits of Lexus Safety System +. This equips the car with a range of active safety and driver assistance features, include a Pre-Collision System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive High-beam System, Lane Departure Alert and Road Sign Assist. Intelligent Parking Sensors are also available.

LEXUS CT 200h EVOLVES WITH SPORTIER STYLING, INTERIOR UPDATES & INNOVATIVE EQUIPMENT

Updated exterior and interior styling for Lexus’ original hybrid luxury compact hatchback

Added appeal for one of Lexus’ top-selling models – more than 300,000 global sales since 2011

Revised, more modern frontal design and new alloy wheel designs

New interior colour options and larger Lexus Navigation System display

Specific design upgrades for the CT 200h F SPORT

Range now available with Lexus Safety System + active safety and driver assistance features

When Lexus debuted the CT 200h at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, it introduced the compact hybrid hatchback to the luxury automobile segment. The CT 200h has become one the brand’s best-selling hybrid model; since its launch in 2011, Lexus has sold about more than 300,000 CT 200h globally, including about 75,000 in Europe, one the largest markets for this model.

With this latest update, Lexus looks to build on the model’s strengths and evolve upon the CT 200h’s well-earned reputation for efficiency and reliability, armed with a freshened exterior that embodies its exciting-to-drive nature — without compromising its user-friendliness and fuel economy.

“The CT 200h has been refreshed and revitalized by enhancing its progressiveness. Its updated design is more emotional and sporty, making it the ideal premium hybrid compact for younger customers who enjoy spirited driving, but still care about the environment,” said Chika Kako, the Chief Engineer of the CT 200h.

EXTERIOR DESIGN: A MORE DRAMATIC PRESENCE

From its inception, the 5-door Lexus CT 200h combines an automotive packaging solution that compliments its owner’s active lifestyle with an exciting-yet-comfortable driving experience and interior surroundings offering the latest technology, upscale design and materials.

The CT 200h now features a much more modern and aggressive front fascia, thanks to a new mesh pattern for the signature spindle grille that helps elevate the model’s sophistication. Also, the integrated bumper that ran across the grille just below the Lexus emblem is gone, as are the horizontal bars within the grille. The fog light bezels are now painted metallic grey and are surrounded by an outer frame with a triangular cross-section and sharp edges. The “arrowhead” DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) have been repositioned above the single-projector headlamps to create a sense of continuity with the side character lines of the car.

Collectively, these new styling elements give the CT200h a more modern, athletic, and yet sophisticated appearance, helping this compact 5-door command a powerful presence when seen from the front.

“We have pursued a new look by reversing the position of the LED headlight unit and DRL compared to the previous model. The result is a look that’s more aggressive than before. Moreover, the “L” motif of the DRL strengthens the Lexus signature,” said Tetsuo Miki, the Chief Designer of the CT 200h.

At the rear of the car are new “L”-signature shaped taillights that give the CT 200h a sportier, wider appearance. New wider rear combination taillights have been changed to an all-LED configuration, with brightly illuminating LED turn signals at the bottom of the assembly, strengthening the “L”-signature look, as well as making the new CT more visible from behind. The upper and lower lines of the light-emitting section of the taillights thicken as they curve outwards, accentuating the width of the taillights and providing the rear end with a strong, stable presence. The back door garnish — enveloping the Lexus badge between the rear glass and the taillights — adds some athletic appeal to the vehicle’s already sporty rear-end. Also, the lower part of the rear bumper is now metallic silver and black, and reshaped to enhance the vehicle’s aggressive appearance, while the rear reflector bezels have been painted metallic grey to match the fog light surrounds up front.

Spicing up the CT 200h’s profile are sportier wheels—from the base 15-in. pieces to the F SPORT’s 17-in. dark metallic alloys. Of note is the new ten-spoke 16-in. wheel that features a machined finish and dark metallic paint.

FRESH INTERIOR UPDATES

One peek inside the cabin, and it is easy to see that the CT 200h offers among the finest interiors in its class, thanks to high-quality materials, rich surface textures and an attractive form-follows-function overall styling philosophy.

A Lexus Navigation System that features a larger 10.3-in. wide display screen (versus the previous-generation’s 7-in. monitor) is newly available.

An expanded interior colour palette is available, featuring new combinations including striking two-tone smooth leather; a mix of fabric and long-wearing synthetic leather, and new all-fabric upholstery. A total of nine different ornamentation choices are available.

F SPORT

The CT 200h F SPORT receives significant design changes for 2018 that include black metallic paint and an updated mesh pattern for the spindle grille exclusive to the F SPORT. The new mesh pattern has also been added as a backdrop for both the fog light inserts and surrounds to match. This model receives high-grade headlights that house a single projector high/low-beam headlamp. Also, exclusive to the F SPORT is jet black plating used on the upper and lower front grille moulding and a metallic black centre lower trim garnish at the rear of the vehicle.

“The F SPORT attracts younger customers, so we’ve strengthened the vehicle’s exclusive black items to reinforce its sporty nature, namely the rear bezel and the rear lower garnish. The rear bezel has the same mesh design as the front grille, and the lower garnish is painted metallic black here while the normal grade color is silver,” the CT 200h Chief Designer Miki said.

For 2018, the CT 200h will offer new two-tone exterior paint schemes and distinctive new colours for the F SPORT model: Lava Orange CS (Crystal Sunshine) and Heat Blue CL (Contrast Layering).

Inside the cabin, the F SPORT boasts new exclusive interior combinations including two-tone leather, fabric a synthetic leather. An elegant Naguri ornamentation, which showcases high levels of Takumi craftsmanship, is exclusively available in the F SPORT.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

Another welcome addition to the updated Lexus CT 200h is the availability of the Lexus Safety System + that offers enhanced safety with advanced technologies such as Pre-Collision System (PCS), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering wheel control function, Automatic High Beam (AHB) headlights, and Road Sign Assist (RSA).

LEXUS SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES CONTINUE THE PROGRESS TOWARDS ELIMINATION OF ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

Lexus Safety System + extended to the new NX and CT range

Lexus Safety System + A introduced in the all-new LS flagship sedan

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + NOW AVAILABLE ON NX AND CT

The benefits of Lexus’ advanced safety technologies are being extended deeper into its model range with the Lexus Safety System + suite of active safety and driver assistance features being made available on both the new NX and CT model ranges.

This comprehensive upgrade of the cars’ safety provisions means that almost all new Lexus models sold in Europe will now benefit from Lexus Safety System +. This is true to Lexus’ “democratisation” strategy to make these safety technologies available to a greater number of customers, at an affordable price. It also reflects the brand’s commitment to improving road safety for all – driver, vehicle occupants, pedestrians and other road users alike – with ultimate aim of eliminating traffic accidents.

The Lexus Safety System + introduced to the new NX and CT specifications includes features which monitor the car’s surroundings and the driver’s responses, recognising certain collision risks and providing support to help prevent a collision happening, or lessening the consequences should an impact be unavoidable.

An adjustable LED Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) prevents the NX from dazzling other road users. Eleven independent LED chips in each headlight are enabled/disabled for precise control of the illuminated and non-illuminated areas. This means the driver can enjoy maximum, safe use of high beam lighting, improving their field of vision without the risk of dazzling other road users.1

LEXUS PRESENTS ITS VISION FOR FUTURE SAFETY WITH THE LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + A IN THE ALL-NEW LS FLAGSHIP SEDAN

Lexus’ will take safety technologies to an even higher level in its all-new LS sedan, scheduled for launch at the end of 2017. This flagship model will be the first Lexus to benefit from further improvements to the functions of Lexus Safety System +, together with the introduction of even more sophisticated driving assistance and advanced pre-collision support in Lexus Safety System + A.

These help the driver confirm left or right turns can be made safely on narrow roads and avoid driving up onto the kerb.

1AHS is available across Lexus range except the CT model, which is equipped with Automatic High Beam (AHB) headlight system, which maximises night-time visibility by automatically switching to low beam when it detects the lights of oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead.

LEXUS PIONEERS A RADICAL NEW APPROACH TO THE PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE 2017 FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

In line with its pioneering spirit, Lexus introduces a radical new way of communicating news and information to the media at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

Its new, disruptive approach is another example of how Lexus is applying the human-centred principles of Omotenashi – the best traditions of Japanese hospitality – to deliver the highest standards of service. In this case, understanding and anticipating the needs of journalists and broadcasters has inspired a flexible news-sharing method that makes imaginative and practical use of augmented reality technology.

This means there will be no fixed time for a Lexus press conference during the busy press day schedule. Instead, media representatives can call at the Lexus booth at a time that suits them, equip themselves with a pair of augmented reality glasses (Microsoft HoloLens) and make a “guided tour” of the stand with commentaries and presentations by Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, and Lexus product specialists.

Pioneering this “press conference on demand”, Lexus believes it will be effective in communicating its key messages to the media in an engaging, thorough and time-efficient fashion.

The concept and its design are fully aligned with Lexus’ core values of Omotenashi customer service and the pioneering use of imaginative technologies. These values are fundamental not only to all new Lexus vehicles, but also to the way in which it is developing its business as a highly innovative, multi-dimensional lifestyle brand, reaching beyond the luxury automotive sphere.

HOW THE CONCEPT WORKS

Accredited journalists are able to call at the Lexus stand at any time during the press days. After introducing themselves at the welcome desk, they will be given a pair of augmented reality glasses – the Microsoft HoloLens.

A virtual reality host will then guide them around the stand, viewing the exhibits while seeing and hearing speeches and insights from virtual speakers, together with information graphics, 3D animations and video content. The effect is similar to a car’s head-up display, in which information is projected on the windscreen within the driver’s field of vision.

The content, including the speeches by Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, and Lexus product specialists, is the same for each user. It includes a welcome from the communications team, information on the new CT and NX models, an update on Lexus’ business performance and a look ahead to what is coming next for the brand. In all, the presentation takes just 10 minutes.

The Lexus booth will be located in Hall 8.0, stand A20. The press conference presentation will be available on-demand at any time during the show’s press days (12 and 13 September).

frankfurt 2017,CT,lexus,2014 CT,2015 NX,2018 ls,safety

<pp:caseid>204460</pp:caseid>

Fully redesigned flagship combines safety systems toward elimination of traffic fatalities

The all-new Lexus LS sedan scheduled for sales launch in Europe at the end of 2017 aims to provide world-leading safety performance through the combination of two advanced Lexus safety systems―Lexus Safety System + and Lexus Safety System + A. These systems are ultimately aimed at the elimination of traffic casualties.

The fifth-generation Lexus LS carries on the tradition of a smooth and powerful ride as well as exceptional quietness and comfort that started with the launch of the first generation as a new standard for luxury cars. Its new GA-L platform brings an improved driving experience, offering the driver the thrill of as-you-command control. As a symbol of Lexus, the fully redesigned LS achieves a bold transformation through the adoption of new styling and advanced technologies within an innovative coupe-like silhouette, while affording ample interior spaciousness befitting a luxury sedan.

Lexus Safety System +

As a flagship, the LS boasts extensive application of advanced safety technologies, including the already well-established active safety package Lexus Safety System +, which is based on the Integrated Safety Management Concept. Rather than considering a vehicle's individual safety technologies and systems independently, this approach aims for coordination in the pursuit of an even higher dimension of driver support in all driving situations.

Several features of Lexus Safety System + have been improved in the all-new LS, including the Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Lexus Safety System + A

In the new LS, Lexus Safety System + is combined with Lexus Safety System + A, which will provide advanced pre-collision support and sophisticated driving assistance.

The Lexus Safety System + A package includes Active Steering Assist, which, as a world-first technology, helps prevent collisions that cannot be avoided through automatic braking alone, and Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA), which is designed to warn the driver of the possibility of head-on collisions at intersections. These features, along with Lexus CoDrive, which assists the driver in maintaining in-lane driving, and others achieve a high level of driving safety support.

The LS also comes with other technologies for supporting safer and more-secure driving in a broad range of situations. Support has been designed to be clear and intuitive, such as by providing the driver with information ranging from support status notifications to information on vehicle behaviour during safety feature operation via a large head-up display (HUD) and a multi-information display.

New active safety technologies

Pre Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Alert and Active Steering Assist

In addition to conventional PCS, which supports collision prevention and damage reduction through alerts, Pre-collision Brake Assist and Pre-collision Braking, the new LS is equipped with Pedestrian Alert, a world-first technology that specifies the direction of the presence of a pedestrian, and Active Steering Assist, which can automatically controls steering and braking. With Pedestrian Alert, if there is the possibility of collision with a pedestrian ahead, the direction of the pedestrian’s presence is shown in an animation via the LS’s large colour HUD, contributing to intuitive recognition on the part of the driver. Active Steering Assist determines when there is a high possibility of collision with a pedestrian in the lane of travel or with a continuous structure, such as a guardrail, and if the system also determines that it is difficult to avoid a collision with brake control alone but that it might be avoided with steering control, the system assists in collision prevention or damage reduction through automatic steering control in addition to activating an alert and applying the brakes.

Lexus CoDrive, advanced driving assist technology

Lexus CoDrive adds Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to the basic functions of Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to provide steering support that is in line with the intentions of the driver. By providing seamless driving support on roads with many curves or in traffic jams, Lexus CoDrive largely decreases driver burden. It coordinates with the LS's large HUD and multi-information display to clearly notify the driver of the state of support provided.

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)

Lane Tracing Assist provides lane-keeping support by way of steering control when Adaptive Cruise Control is in operation. In addition to lane line detection by way of a camera, tracing of the path of the vehicle ahead enables assistance even when lane lines cannot be recognized, such as in low-speed driving in congestion when there is little distance to the preceding vehicle.

Two-stage Adaptive High-beam System (AHS)

With eight LED lights at the top and 16 below (on each side), the Two-stage Adaptive High-beam System provides optimal lighting by way of separate on/off control of each row of LEDs, enabling finer control of light strength and distance compared to the existing LED-based AHS. This allows higher frequency of high-beam driving without blinding preceding or oncoming vehicles, thus improving night-time visibility.

Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA)

To help prevent collisions at intersections, FCTA is meant to detect forward cross-traffic vehicles. It uses forward direction radar and is the first in the world*3 to alert drivers of the direction from which a cross-traffic vehicle is approaching the immediate intersection. Alerts are displayed using the LS's large HUD. If the vehicle proceeds regardless of the presence of an approaching vehicle in cross traffic, warnings are also issued by a buzzer and the LS's multi-information display.

Road Sign Assist (RSA)

RSA acquires road sign information using a camera and navigation maps and then displays such using the LS's HUD and multi-information display, thus reducing driver failure to recognize signs and encouraging safe driving.

Improved active safety technologies

Lexus has further evolved the performance of PCS, LDA and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control in Lexus Safety System +, which is featured in a growing number of Lexus models and is combined with Lexus Safety System + A in the LS.

Pre-Collision System (PCS)

PCS detects pedestrians and vehicles ahead using millimetre-wave radar and a stereo camera and supports collision prevention and damage mitigation with an alert, Pre-collision Brake Assist and Pre-collision Braking. The improved PCS can detect bicyclists and night-time pedestrians and has improved deceleration performance during automatic braking. For example, it can decelerate the vehicle by as much as 60 km/hour when a pedestrian is detected, thus improving its collision-prevention performance.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

LDA helps to prevent lane departures. In addition to detecting road lane lines, it is now also capable of detecting the boundaries between asphalt and such elements as grass, dirt and curbstone through advances in recognition capability. Thus, it can now perform its functions of alerting the driver and operating the steering wheel even on roads that do not have lines.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Outstanding basic recognition performance has been secured with wide-angle detection using newly developed millimetre-wave radar and a camera with a wider forward recognition range. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control also provides support for making driving more comfortable, with smooth acceleration at start-up, and during following, departure and acceleration, for a sense of security for occupants, and smooth deceleration in the case of a rapid change in deceleration speed during following.

Other active safety technologies

Parking support brakes (stationary objects, vehicles approaching in the rear, pedestrians in the rear)

With the aim of reducing damage from accidents when parking, during which moving vehicles and pedestrians, in addition to walls and other stationary objects, perimeter checks and complicated driving operations are considerations, low-speed braking support systems have been integrated into a single package. Added to the already commercialized Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) and Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake (RCTAB) is the world's first rear pedestrian support brake, which detects pedestrians using a rear camera, and in the case of a possible collision, helps to minimize damages by using alerts and brake control.

Panoramic View Monitor (with side clearance view and cornering view functions)

Side clearance view and cornering view functions have been added to the Panoramic View Monitor, which supports periphery safety checks. Side clearance view produces an image on the LS's 12.3-inch display monitor of the area in front of the car as if it were seen from an elevated point at the rear of the car, allowing the driver to more-intuitively confirm the space on the sides of the vehicle when passing by another vehicle on a narrow road or when moving toward the shoulder of the road to allow passage. When side clearance view is in operation, cornering view automatically produces an image of the vehicle as viewed from the rear at an angle in line with driving operation during cornering. These assist in confirming safety when making left or right turns on narrow roads and in preventing the driving up onto curb stones when departing the roadway.

lexus,2018ls,2018 ls,safety

New F SPORT model offers the most engaging LS driving experience ever

Includes exclusive F SPORT design touches, 20-inch alloy wheels, 6-piston front and 4 piston rear brakes.

F SPORT for LS enhances dynamic feel with chassis tech and helps to underline the “sport” in F SPORT

</pp:summary>

NEW YORK, April 11, 2017 — Having debuted its reinvented flagship sedan earlier this year—the all-new 2018 LS —Lexus is putting an exclamation point on this signature model with the new F SPORT model. The LS F SPORT, unveiled today and on display this week at the New York International Auto Show, moves the driving emotion needle even farther with handling enhancements and a performance-infused design outside and in.

The original luxury disruptor when it debuted to launch the brand, the Lexus LS has for nearly three decades set benchmarks for powertrain smoothness, ride quietness, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and long-term quality. The 2018 LS will offer the most dynamic driving experience in the model’s history; now it has the possibility of being enhanced further with the new F SPORT model.

Available in petrol and hybrid powertrains, the F SPORT version of the LS, will imbue the standard model with a more engaging driving spirit through carefully applied chassis tuning and enhancements, while still emphasizing exceptional comfort.

F SPORT Look

Lexus designers didn’t hold back when giving the LS its coupe-like silhouette and dramatic rendition of the Lexus signature spindle grille that shows even greater intricacy in the design. Developing the F SPORT grille took computer-aided design (CAD) operators some five months to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light. Even then, they adjusted 7,100 individual surfaces to achieve the desired look and texture (compared to 5,000 for the standard model’s grille). And when combined with the sporty enlarged side grille, the F SPORT grille is functional as well, helping to maintain the vehicle’s cooling performance.

The special F SPORT front grille, rocker panel, and trunk mouldings accentuate the sedan’s rakish profile, while F SPORT badging on fenders and exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels complete the exterior transformation. And for those looking to really stand out, White Nova and Heat Blue are offered as F SPORT-exclusive exterior colours.

F SPORT Inside

As it did with the exterior, Lexus shifted the LS cabin into F SPORT spec by applying trim and features exclusive to this version. A common thread through all LS models remains: Omotenashi, the concept of Japanese hospitality. Applied to the LS, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them from hazards. The F SPORT adds a performance attitude to the mix.

The F SPORT persona shines throughout the cabin, starting with the F SPORT-exclusive front seat, which provides enhanced support for dynamic driving. A perforated-grill pattern on seating surfaces and unique scored aluminum trim elements add additional sporty flair.

The driver faces a special F SPORT steering wheel as well as a speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter with a meter ring that slides to display information, a design adapted from the limited-production Lexus LFA supercar and a further expression of the car’s dynamic character. Attention to detail shows in the aluminum accelerator, brake and footrest pedals, as well as the F SPORT perforated shift handle and footrest. Ultrasuede in the seats and headliner is the crowning touch. For those desiring the ultimate sporty look, a new Red interior is available exclusively on F SPORT models.

LS Chassis Details

2018 LS F SPORT model features the latest generation of the brand’s advanced chassis control technology, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), which has been refined since its debut more than a decade ago.

In 2004, Lexus introduced the first integrated control system that combined the previously independent ABS, TRC, VSC and EPS, as well as other functions, into a single system.

In 2012, the brand adopted the four-wheel active steering integrated control system—known as Lexus Dynamic Handling, or LDH—from the GS for enhanced safety and driving performance that responds to the driver’s intention.

The new VDIM system implements cooperative control of all vehicle subsystems – braking, steering, powertrain, and suspension – to control basic longitudinal, lateral and vertical motion as well as yaw, roll and pitch. Optimal control of these motions helps to enable exceptional ride comfort, enhanced traction and safety and handling agility, and allows for enriched flat vehicle posture during cornering as well as a more comfortable and stable ride overall.

Sporting Genes

The LS is based on an extended version of the brand’s premium global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA–L) platform from the new Lexus LC coupe. The GA-L platform sets the stage for enhanced handling, ride smoothness and cabin quietness. The LS F SPORT capitalizes on the platform’s responsiveness and agility.

Equipping the LS F SPORT with standard 20-inch wheels and 245/45RF20+ 275/40RF20 tyres, along with larger front and rear brakes (6-piston callipers on front and 4 pistons on rear), unlocks more of the platform’s intrinsic performance capability. The LS F SPORT is equipped with LDH (Variable Gear Ratio Steering and Dynamic Rear Steering)* and has a sport-tuned air suspension with rapid height function. The result is a full-size premium luxury sedan that responds more like a sports coupe through curves, helping to underline what F SPORT stands for.

415-Horsepower Heart with a 10-Speed Partner Lexus designed an all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine specifically for the new 2018 LS 500, using twin turbochargers developed through the company’s F1 technology. This new twin-turbo V6 offers V8-level performance – 415 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque – paired with the first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission in luxury sedan.

The engine yields a broad torque curve and, perfectly in tune with the F SPORT spirit, the new engine and transmission deliver instant acceleration and a constant build-up of torque toward the vehicle’s redline. The LS 500 is undeniably quick, with a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds (petrol, RWD**). Electronically controlled wastegates are among the features that contribute to the engine’s rapid responses. The driver can tailor powertrain response and feel by choosing from Normal, Sport S or Sport S+ modes, and just enough of the exhaust note is heard to enhance the sporty feel.

F SPORT Performance, Hybrid Efficiency

The LS 500h F SPORT infuses high efficiency into the sporting formula. The new Multi Stage Hybrid System combines a naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with two electric motor/generators and uses a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. The V6 engine uses D-4S direct fuel injection, and lightweight valvetrain components, with Dual VVT-i ensuring ample torque across the engine speed range. Combined system output is 354 hp.

The new system adapts the planetary-type continuously variable transmission from Lexus Hybrid Drive and also adds a unique four-speed automatic transmission. Working in concert, the two gearsets alter output in four stages to utilize the V6 engine across the entire speed range.

In manual mode, the two gearsets act together to provide the effect of 10 ratios, giving the LS 500h F SPORT an enhanced dynamic feel on the road and allowing the driver to shift through the ratios with paddle shifters. The Multi Stage Hybrid System allows for more electric assist at lower vehicle speeds, and it enables the LS 500h under certain conditions to operate with the petrol engine off at speeds of up to 87 mph. What’s more, this system allows the RWD LS 500h to propel from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds – which is on par with the previous-generation V8-powered LS 460 and 3 /10th of a second faster than the AWD LS 600h.

Lexus Press Conference

Geneva Motor Show 2017

Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, I would like to welcome you to our motor show stand. This new look demonstrates our ongoing commitment to design and craftsmanship. It reflects a new era at Lexus. It’s an inviting place designed to stir the senses of our guests. Visitors will discover hints of our brand heritage as well as indications of the bold direction Lexus is heading.

When you visit, you will discover elements that reflect our passions and ambitions. Items that inspired product designs and features found in Lexus cars today. As a small but iconic example, this Kiriko vase is a unique piece of Japanese craftsmanship, dating back to the early 19th century Edo period. This uniquely cut and coloured glass inspired the bespoke door inserts you will find on our new flagship model.

Our luxury lifestyle brand passions extend beyond this space. In January, we revealed our new luxury sport yacht concept in Miami.

This unique project put our designers to the test. The sport yacht features Lexus distinctive design cues and a Mark Levinson sound system. Thanks to its twin 5 litre V8 engines delivering 660kW, it can reach an impressive top speed of 43 knots, or 80 km/h.

Lexus is also a partner in the biggest European movie production ever, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, produced by EuropaCorp. For this movie, the creative teams imagined a vehicle grounded in reality but befitting the Valerian world set 700 years in the future: the Lexus Skyjet.

Experience Amazing is more than our new tagline, it is our ambitious goal for all activities.

And, we have brought a few amazing things here to Geneva. Nothing beats the excitement of Motorsports!

So let me introduce the impressive “carbon black” car that stands in front of you today: the 2017 RC F GT3 making its European debut.

GT3 probably represents the highest level of engagement in customer motorsports and that’s where we want to play a role in the coming years. This RC F GT3 will race in the United States and Japan throughout 2017. In Europe, we ran prototypes during VLN races at the Nürburgring. We even ran this car for the first time at the VLN9 race in October, and it won the race, making Lexus the first Asian manufacturer to claim victory in a VLN race. This year, we will participate in selected International GT Open races, an important next step in our development programme. We want to bring Lexus into top-level GT3 racing in Europe in the near future.

In addition to positive reactions to our recent lifestyle and motorsports activities, we see similar results from customers in our showrooms. In 2016, Lexus global sales increased to 677 thousand vehicles - our 6th consecutive year of growth.

Here in Europe we remain among the fastest growing regions for Lexus with a 17% sales increase last year setting a new record with over 74 thousand units. The launch of the all-new RX in particular was a tremendous success as our retail partners tripled their sales versus 2015.

What can you expect from Lexus in 2017?

We will bring two new exceptional vehicles to the market. These two distinct Lexus models feature the very best we have to offer: a bold design, exceptional performance credentials and innovative technologies.

We revealed the LC last year and it will reach European showrooms in the late summer. And I have good news to share today: the LC will be very competitively priced. In Germany for instance, it will be offered from 99,190€.

This year, we introduce the 5th generation of our flagship sedan, the LS. 28 years ago, this model launched our brand and triggered a revolution in the premium market. This 5th generation has all the ingredients to do it again!

The new LS 500 made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It features an all-new twin-turbo V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission - an industry first in the luxury market. The LS 500 brings the best of both worlds: it delivers V8-level power and performance while minimizing noise and fuel consumption.

Today, I am very happy to introduce the second model in the new LS line-up. Ladies and gentlemen, the full hybrid LS 500h.

The new LS combines the physical presence and the interior space of a luxury sedan with the sleek/stylish silhouette of a 4 door coupé. Its stunning interior has already won its first accolade taking home the EyesOn Design award at the Detroit Motor Show.

The LS 500h is powered by the Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System. This system is also featured in our LC 500h. It represents the next generation hybrid system providing more direct acceleration, especially when moving off from stationary and more fun to drive, all while improving fuel efficiency at higher speeds.

Our new Global Architecture - Luxury platform is lower and wider. It is the stiffest platform, Lexus has ever developed. It allows the occupants to sit closer to the centre of gravity and the critical weight to be ideally distributed.

The new LS features the most advanced dynamic safety control system in the industry. It’s intuitive pedestrian detection function with active steering is a world’s first! If a collision with a pedestrian is imminent, the car will automatically brake and steer around the person while keeping its traffic lane.

As you would expect this new LS features more than technology Innovation. It is also a synonym for exceptional luxury. Take the rear seats, they offer the ultimate relaxation experience combining a massage function with heating according to ancient Japanese Shiatsu principles. This is another world’s first! We worked with some of Japan’s most talented craftsmen to create a unique look and feel for the interior. The inner door panels are inspired by origami and have been pleated by hand, one by one. And here is the Kiriko glass insert I mentioned earlier, created using the same techniques as the vase displayed in the lounge upstairs. LS 500h will be launched in Europe during the last quarter of 2017.

We can’t wait for you to experience amazing yourself by getting behind the wheel or perhaps in the back seat for that massage. Please feel free to join us in our new lounge area here at the stand and I hope you enjoy the rest of the show.

As we close I would like to invite Lexus International Executive Vice-President, and future President, Yoshihiro Sawa to join me on stage for a photo shoot opportunity.

Thank you and have a great day in Geneva!

lexus,2018 ls,geneva-ms-2017

WORLD PREMIERE OF THE ALL-NEW LEXUS LS 500h

<pp:caseid>176907</pp:caseid>

The Geneva Motor Show hosts the world debut of the new Lexus LS 500h, the full hybrid version of Lexus’ new flagship sedan.

The model, revealed soon after the premiere appearance of the twin-turbo petrol V6-powered LS 500 at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, is a further manifestation of how Lexus has reimagined the luxury sedan, presenting brave design, exhilarating performance and a sophisticated appeal to capture the imagination of forward-thinking, younger customers.

The car’s design successfully brings together the virtues of a long-wheelbase four-door sedan with a low, coupe-like profile, positioning the LS perfectly across the two growing sedan and coupe segments.

The cabin has benefited from an equally new approach, focusing on “progressive comfort,” interpreting Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship traditions in the context of an advanced, luxurious and innovative vehicle interior such as the original door trim ornamentation. Notably the LS 500 was honoured at NAIAS with the EyesOn Design Award for excellence in interior design.

Conceived as the new global pinnacle of the Lexus brand, the LS goes beyond what the world expects from a luxury car. Chief Engineer Toshio Asahi explained: “Developing such a flagship model required a massive paradigm shift. Rather than being bound by the conventions that had defined luxury cars in the past, we aimed to create a car with innovative, emotional and sensual appeal that would draw customers’ eyes away from other luxury cars and provide entirely new values.”

The LS 500h is equipped with the new Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System, a technology that transforms the performance and driver appeal of hybrid, providing improved responsiveness and more rewarding, linear acceleration, particularly when moving off from stationary. At the same time, the inherent fuel and emissions efficiency of Lexus Hybrid Drive has been further improved.

The powertrain features a 3.5-litre V6 Dual VVT-i V6 petrol engine and two electric motors, together delivering maximum system power of 354hp/264kW. While the LS 500 will be available in Europe exclusively as all-wheel drive model, the LS 500h will be introduced in both rear and all-wheel drive versions.

The LS 500h is built on the new Lexus Global Architecture – Luxury platform, which ensures a low centre of gravity and optimum weight distribution, contributing to the car’s essential stability and handling agility, which in turn deliver increased driver rewards. The fundamental high rigidity of the chassis allows the new multilink suspension to be tuned to achieve a great handling performance and the supreme comfort for which the LS is renowned. In Europe, Adaptive Variable Suspension, with air suspension are a standard feature of higher specification models.

The car’s dynamic performance benefits also from the co-ordination of braking, steering and stability systems through Lexus Dynamic Handling.

Advanced technologies are further used to deliver impressive safety performance. The LS 500h’s Lexus Safety System+ package additionally includes a new advanced safety system, which features the world’s first intuitive pedestrian detection function with active steering among other innovative technologies.

Omotenashi, expressing the unique sense of Japanese hospitality, defines the LS 500h’s whisper-quiet and luxurious interior. Supreme comfort is provided by front and rear seats with multiple power adjustment, heating, cooling and massage functions. There is also an optional rear seat arrangement that includes an extending leg ottoman and the most generous leg room of any LS generation. Notably the new LS 500h is longer even than the current long wheelbase LS. The wheelbase increased from 3,090 mm to 3,125 mm.

Lexus Takumi craftsmanship also contributes to the special quality of the LS 500h’s cabin, in luxurious new trims, materials and detailing, including a new pleating treatment and Kiriko glasswork on the inner door panels.

lexus,2017 LC,Multi-stage,Multi Stage Hybrid System,LC 500h,LC 500,ls 500,hybrid,geneva-ms-2017,2018 ls,rc f gt3,2017 geneva motor show

</pp:summary>

Lexus’ new LS 500h flagship sedan is to benefit from the company’s Multi Stage Hybrid System, a breakthrough technology that transforms the performance and driver appeal of hybrid power. The new LS 500h will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 7 March.

The system, first installed in the powertrain of the new LC 500h luxury coupe, brings multiple benefits in terms of improved throttle responsiveness, high-speed cruising at lower engine rpm and the ability to cruise at higher speeds, with the petrol engine shut off – up to 140km/h.

At the same time, overall fuel efficiency and emissions performance are improved, while preserving the smooth, quiet and sophisticated drive that is a hallmark of Lexus hybrids.

The Multi Stage Hybrid System adds a four-stage shift device to the LS 500h’s Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain, which features a 3.5-litre V6 Dual VVT-i petrol engine and two electric motors. The result is more direct response to driver throttle inputs – a quality that is particularly noticeable when pulling away from stationary.

Although the system comprises a four-stage shift, its operation replicates the feel of driving with a 10-speed transmission, like that featured in the twin-turbo 3.5l V6 petrol engine powered LS 500, with a linear, direct and continuous acceleration feel, making for a more rewarding driving experience.

The Lexus press conference will take place on March 7, at 12:45PM on the stand no. 4211 in Hall 4, Palexpo.

lexus,Multi-stage,Multi Stage Hybrid System,2017 geneva motor show,2018 ls,MSHS,geneva-ms-2017

Radical new design with coupe-like silhouette, yet spaciousness of prestige sedan

New platform for greatest-ever LS agility and comfort

All-new twin-turbo V6 with 310 kW / 421 PS / 415 hp

10-speed automatic transmission

All-new available Lexus advanced safety system

New level of flagship luxury in every aspect

Interior inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics

It is possible that no single automobile has, upon introduction, upended its category as decisively as the first Lexus LS did when it launched the luxury brand 28 years ago. The 1990 LS 400 was the original luxury disruptor, winning critical acclaim and astonishing customers by setting new benchmarks for comfort, powertrain performance and smoothness, quietness, build quality, attention to detail, and dependability. The brand supported that ground-breaking vehicle by setting and maintaining new standards for customer service and satisfaction.

Now, Lexus is about to repeat history with the introduction of the all-new, fifth-generation LS flagship sedan for 2018, unveiled at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. Inside and out, the new LS reflects a strong, uniquely Japanese identity and approach to luxury. Yet, the LS was designed to be the brand’s latest global citizen, available in about 90 countries.

Longer and lower than the sedan it replaces, the all-new LS debuts a strikingly bold design with a coupe-like silhouette punctuated by the new Lexus design language. A new driver-centric performance feel comes from building the LS on the company’s all-new global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA–L). This premium rear-wheel drive platform, an extended version of the one used for the stunning new Lexus LC 500 coupe, will offer a more dynamic experience on the road while further elevating renowned Lexus comfort.

The original Lexus LS won acclaim by anticipating what luxury customers would want, rather than simply amplifying what established luxury automobile brands offered at the time. In that spirit, the 2018 LS sedan’s spacious cabin, unique appointments and visionary technology will once again surprise customers by resetting expectations for a global flagship sedan.

“We set previously unheard of targets and resolutely pushed ahead towards these ambitious goals,” said LS chief engineer Asahi. “The customers that are going to want to own a Lexus flagship are already surrounded by luxury on a daily basis, people who have a sharp eye for authenticity to begin with. We wouldn’t turn their heads with a conventional premium product.”

A FLAGSHIP REBORN

Just as the original LS launched the Lexus brand, the all-new 2018 LS continues the brand’s more dynamic direction. Each generation of LS sedans leading up to this iteration advanced luxury, craftsmanship, performance and safety in their own way, with the most recent also introducing a far more emotional design and engaging on-road performance.

To create the all-new LS, Lexus took the approach of starting from new, reimagining what a flagship sedan should be, as if launching the brand all over again. The goal was not to improve on what Lexus has done, but to exceed expectations of global luxury customers.

A common thread going through all LS models remains: Omotenashi, the concept of Japanese hospitality. Applied to a luxury automobile, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them from hazards.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS

More than ever before, luxury sedan drivers demand greater handling agility and performance feel without sacrificing comfort. It’s one of the most difficult balances to achieve in a vehicle, yet the new Lexus global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA–L) meets the challenge. The new platform debuted in the LC 500 coupe and now, with a longer wheelbase, underpins the new LS. To enhance centre of gravity height and weight distribution, the new LS is offered only as a long wheel base model, with a wide and low design.

The GA-L platform is the stiffest in Lexus history, setting the stage for enhanced handling, ride smoothness and cabin quietness. The 3,125 mm wheelbase is 35 mm longer than the current LS long-wheelbase model.

Helping to provide the uncanny ride and handling balance in the new LS is the latest generation of a chassis control technology known as Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM). This system implements cooperative control of all vehicle subsystems – braking, steering, powertrain, and suspension – to control basic longitudinal, lateral and vertical motion as well as yaw, roll and pitch. Optimal control of these motions helps to enable exceptional ride comfort, enhanced traction and safety and handling agility. Handling is further enhanced by active stabilizer bars and the Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) System with independent front and rear steering. VDIM is capable of aiding stability when the car is traversing split-friction surfaces, such as dry pavement and ice.

In creating the new LS, engineers used lightweight materials including ultra-high tensile steel sheet and aluminium to carve over 90 kg from the current LS platform and body. These savings, along with the implementation of the new V6 engine and enhanced body rigidity, allow for a more dynamic driving experience.

Critical to its driving performance, the new platform lowers the car’s centre of gravity by placing most of the mass, including the engine and the occupants, in a position more centralized and lower in the chassis to help enhance the centre of gravity. Special braces in the engine compartment, stiff aluminium front and rear suspension towers, and other features help bolster the strength of key chassis structures.

The LS has a history of outstanding suspension compliance, yet Lexus saw opportunity for new gains in this realm as well. For example, the multilink suspension employs double ball joints on the upper and lower control arms to help allow for control of the smallest movements from the driver inputs and road conditions. Beyond sharing workload, a dual ball joint arrangement helps optimize suspension geometry to increase wheel control and yield more precise steering response with better initial effort. To reduce unsprung weight and therefore aid agility and comfort, aluminium is used extensively in the suspension.

LS PERFORMANCE AND SMOOTHNESS REDEFINED:TWIN-TURBO V6 AND 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION

For both high power and excellent fuel efficiency, Lexus designed an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine specifically for the new LS with all-new twin turbos developed through the company’s F1 technology. This new engine in the LS is indicative of the more dynamic approach being taken by Lexus, offering V8-level power without sacrificing fuel economy—all while minimizing noise and vibration. The new LS engine offers the output one would expect in a flagship sedan: 310 kW / 421 PS / 415 hp and 600 Nm of torque, sizeable gains over the current LS model’s V8. The long stroke and optimized stroke-to-bore ratio contribute to high-speed combustion and the efficiency of the twin turbos, which assist the LS with a projected 0-100 km/h of 4.5 seconds (AWD).

Perhaps more critical is how Lexus tuned the engine and transmission to deliver instant acceleration and a constant build-up of torque toward the engine’s redline.

A ladder frame structure in the cylinder block, redesigned engine mounts, electric waste gates and numerous other features help ensure the remarkable powertrain smoothness, a Lexus hallmark. The driver will be able to tailor powertrain response and feel by choosing from Normal to Sport to Sport+ modes, and just enough of the exhaust note can be heard to enhance the sporty feel.

The first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission for a luxury sedan, having already debuted in the Lexus LC 500, is also used in the new LS flagship sedan. It is a torque-converter automatic, yet with shift times that rival those of dual-clutch transmissions. The wide bandwidth afforded by ten closely spaced ratios is ideal for all forms of driving, helping to provide an optimal gear for all conditions.

Shifting via paddles is available, yet many will prefer the advanced electronic control system, which anticipates the driver’s input. The system chooses the ideal ratio by monitoring the acceleration, braking and lateral-g forces.

For starting acceleration, the close ratios of the low gears and the shortened shift time enable a rhythmical and exhilarating acceleration feel. The high torque of the twin-turbo engine matches ideally with the higher gear ratios for effortless, serene highway cruising, yet very quick downshifts yield direct acceleration with no lag in G response.

Torque converter lock-up activates in all ranges except when starting off to provide a direct feel, while also supporting fuel efficiency.

CRAFTING A UNIQUE IDENTITY

“The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand,” said Chief Designer Koichi Suga. “More than any other model, it embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brand stands for.”

Following the “Yet” philosophy that has been passed on since the first-generation LS, Lexus created a design offering the room and comfort of a prestige “three-box” sedan, yet with the stylish silhouette of a four-door coupe that holds stronger appeal for younger luxury customers.

Lexus designers took full advantage of the new platform, with its lower profile and length on par with that of a prestige long-wheelbase sedan, to give the new LS a stretched, ground-hugging appearance. Compared to the current LS, the new model is about 15 mm lower, while the hood and trunk are approximately 30 mm and 41 mm lower, respectively. The new LS is the first Lexus sedan with a six- side window design. Also a first for a Lexus sedan, the flush-surface windows smoothly integrate with the side pillar.

To preserve headroom with the lower profile, the new LS features an outer slide-type moonroof. The unique rendition of the spindle grille mesh, with a texture that seemingly changes in different light, is the result of both intense CAD development and hand-adjusting thousands of individual surfaces.

The LS debuts five wheel designs, including two new 19- and three 20-inch wheel designs. The 20-inch premium wheels employ a brilliant appearance created using an electroplating technique known as sputtering. All but one of the wheel designs feature a hollow rim structure that helps reduce the resonance sound generated by the tires.

PROGRESSIVE COMFORT WITH TRADITIONAL INSPIRATION

Creating a new standard of flagship luxury is not simply a matter of adding more features. Inspired by the omotenashi principle, Lexus sought to instil the new LS cabin with luxury that welcomes and envelops the occupants while treating the driver like a partner.

“I suggest that you simply open the door and experience that immediate, intuitive sense that you’re looking at an interior that is unlike any luxury car before,” said Chief Designer Suga.

New seating designs, including available 28-way power front seats that feature heating, cooling and massage, exemplify this approach. The organically shaped dash design clusters information displays at uniform height to support the “seat-in-control” layout that emphasizes the driver’s ability to operate all systems without the need to change posture.

While making the new LS even more of a driver’s car, Lexus also lavished attention to the rear seat, developing a design that creates seamless, enveloping continuity between the trim and seatbacks for passenger egress.

Options for heating, cooling and massage make the rear seat a most welcoming environment. The available power front and rear seat with Shiatsu massage and a raised ottoman, part of a wider rear seat luxury package, offers the most legroom of any previous-generation LS. In addition, the seat behind the front passenger in this optional package can be reclined up to 48 degrees, and can be raised up to 24 degrees to help assist the rear-seat passenger in exiting the vehicle.

Because the new LS is lower than previous versions, Lexus for the first time equipped the available air suspension with an access function. Activated by unlocking the car with the smart key, access mode automatically raises the vehicle and opens the seat bolsters to welcome drivers behind the wheel.

THE INTERSECTION OF TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY

Lighting and attention to detail express a unique aesthetic in the LS. A new approach to creating trim elements again turned to Japanese culture, combining traditional Japanese aesthetic with advanced manufacturing techniques. This is reflected in signature touches, such as beautiful interior ambient lighting inspired by Japanese lanterns and armrests that appear to float next to the door panel.

Inspired by Shimamoku wood patterns, the new forms that combine the artistic combination of natural woodwork and application of Japan’s sophisticated sliced wood and laser cutting manufacturing technologies can be seen in the new LS. New patterns include Art Wood/Organic, Art Wood/Herringbone and Laser Cut Special. Compared to the straight-grain Shimamoku pattern, the new LS cross-grain is a larger pattern featuring bolder contrasts between light and dark, giving the wood a more vibrant appearance.

THE SOUNDS OF NEAR SILENCE – OR GREAT MUSIC

Lexus tuned the LS exhaust to convey a more authoritative tone, yet also designed the cabin to ensure utterly quiet cruising. New sound suppression methods further hush the environment compared to previous LS models. Active Noise Control further quiets the cabin by detecting the sound of the engine coming into the vehicle and cancelling certain frequencies using antiphase sound from the audio speakers.

The serenity of the LS cabin provides an ideal stage for the standard premium audio system or the audiophile-worthy available 3D surround Mark Levinson audio package with in-ceiling array speakers. The package features a more inviting graphic user interface. Its next-generation remote touch is designed to mimic smartphone operation, also supporting handwritten input. In addition to its 12.3-inch wide navigation display, the LS can incorporate an optional 24-inch color heads-up display (HUD)—the largest in the world—that projects a variety of information onto the driver’s forward view.

ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES

Structurally, the all-new Lexus LS offers a high degree of passive safety for occupant protection in collisions. Lexus has also equipped the LS with technologies that can possibly help prevent crashes from occurring or mitigate their effects.

The LS will feature the brand’s Lexus Safety System + and offer an advanced safety system, which features the world’s first intuitive pedestrian detection with active steering. With this system, if a pedestrian is detected in the lane ahead and a collision is imminent, the LS will automatically brake and steer around the person while staying in the lane. The available colour HUD is utilized in alerting the driver.

Lexus will debut a new auto show exhibit in Detroit’s Cobo Center at the 2017 North American International Auto Show, which takes place January 8-22. The new design showcases the Lexus brand’s hallmark craftsmanship, quality and safety while giving visitors an immersive experience.

The all-new, fifth-generation 2018 LS flagship sedan, making its world debut in Detroit, takes centre stage. This platform reconnects the LS with its birthplace – the first LS premiered in Detroit in 1989, which also heralded the debut of the Lexus brand, a significant milestone in automotive history. The LS has gone on to make its mark in the luxury segment by offering ride performance, quietness and comfort that consumers expect from a premium vehicle.

Now, 28 years later, the 2018 LS boasts a bold new look with a coupe-like silhouette that does not compromise interior roominess plus visionary technology. It will be built on an extended version of the company’s all-new global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA–L) premium rear-wheel drive platform—shared with the LC—for a more dynamic experience on the road.

Following its appearance at the Paris Motor Show in September, a new Lexus compact crossover concept vehicle, the UX Concept featuring the new Kinetic Seat concept, will make its first North American appearance.

The UX Concept is a new variety of four-seater crossover which contrasts the appearance and 4x4 presence of an off-roader with a low ground clearance and a coupe-like driving position. The exterior bodywork flows into the interior cabin as the innovative 3-D Human Machine Interface brings car and driver closer than ever before. The distinctive seats are the first design interpretation of the Lexus Kinetic Seat Concept, the latest in breakthrough seat technology.

The Kinetic Seat Concept design story will be featured, showing how the seat cushion and back rest can move kinetically with occupant weight and external forces providing a more comfortable driving experience.

The 1683 m2 Lexus exhibit features 14 vehicles on display, including the return of the LC performance coupe that was one of the “must-see” debut vehicles of last year’s Detroit show. The LC, which goes on sale in 2017, represents a significant illustration of Lexus’ dedication to create cars with exciting, emotional designs and exhilarating performance.

2018 ls,ls 500,2017 Detroit,UXConcept,UX concept,detroit-ms-2017
