<pp:caseid>372321</pp:caseid>

Lexus designers, engineers and master craftspeople have invested exceptional efforts in creating the Lexus RX, the original Lexus crossover. Not only it is the world’s bestselling luxury hybrid SUV and all-time best sold Lexus model, but also – it is the world’s first luxury SUV that has created its own segment back in 1998.

Showcasing brave Lexus design and engaging driving character, the RX certainly stands out. For the 2020 model – Lexus engineers scrutinized every part of the vehicle, showcasing some impressive engineering solutions.

Here we focus on seven stand-out features that exemplify Lexus’ imaginative technology.

INTELLIGENT HIGH BEAMS

Because many accidents between vehicles and pedestrians occur at night, Lexus has equipped the new RX’s AHS (Adaptive High-beam System) with the world’s first BladeScan technology. The available new high-beam system enhances the driver’s field of view, resulting in excellent visibility in darkened conditions, providing a wider illumination area compared to conventional array-type lighting, with smooth and fine light distribution control.

BladeScan works by rotating a mirror (reflector) inside the AHS unit that allows the illumination area to be expanded to cover the maximum field of view with minimal glare for drivers in front. The system also supports the recognition of roadside pedestrians that happen to be crossing the street further ahead, while enhancing the driver’s field of view.

BladeScan activates automatically, thanks to a control unit inside the lamp that checks the surrounding environment via front-facing camera, such as vehicles ahead and ambient brightness, as well as processing vehicle speed and yaw-rate information to enable/disable and adjust the brightness of the LEDs to provide optimum illumination.

This new lighting technology, along with the award-winning Lexus Safety System+, defines the mission of the brand, which is to provide safest driving experience possible for not only the driver, but those outside the vehicle, in most every type of road and environmental conditions.

ACTIVE STABILIZER SUSPENSION

Ever since the introduction of the RX in 1998, each successive model’s signature driving trait has always been the silky, smooth ride quality – something Lexus has been committed to maintaining as a defining characteristic of the RX range throughout the years. The 2020 RX upholds this commitment thanks largely to the vehicle’s Active Stabilizer Suspension System, which now features Roll Skyhook Control.

The Active Stabilizer Suspension System in the new RX focuses on suppressing body roll during turning without deteriorating ride comfort. Reduced body roll typically comes at the cost of ride quality, due to the equipment and tuning necessary to manage the physics of mass in motion, but the Yet Philosophy is put to work by reconciling seemingly at-odds concepts to achieve a previously unrealized solution.

The new Roll Skyhook Control system takes things one step further by subduing body roll when traveling over uneven road surfaces. This form of active control is the first of its kind in the world. Roll Skyhook Control uses a vertical G sensor to detect roll direction, and when it senses the vehicle leaning in a given direction, it activates the stabilizer actuator to suppress movement, keeping the vehicle’s posture upright. The result is a comfortable driving experience as the new technology aims to maintain the vehicle occupants’ line of sight and body positions when traveling over uneven road surfaces.

DRIVE MODE SELECT

The new RX offers a high level of driving customization by way of Drive Mode Select that allows the user to select drive modes suitable for certain driving situations or match their preferred driving styles. Customize Mode has been especially adjusted for models equipped with the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, which enables the driver to freely combine the various modes of the engine, hybrid system, chassis and air-conditioning functions.

Drive Mode Select features four basic modes: Normal, Eco, Sport S and Sport S+. In Normal mode, the new RX offers the ideal balance between performance and fuel economy, while in Eco mode, fuel economy is prioritized by managing engine output and the accelerator opening angle for smoother overall operation. Sport S Mode sharpens the EPS (Electric Power Steering), while providing enhanced acceleration response and feeling, while Sport S+ mode takes the excitement up a notch.

Models equipped with AVS get a Sport S+ mode and the aforementioned Customize mode. For the Sport S+ mode, control of the AVS is added to the Sport S mode and the response of the EPS is further sharpened, realizing the full performance potential of the new RX. And by allowing discerning drivers to select and combine the various modes freely with the new Customization mode, the RX now offers dozens of various setting combinations that can be precisely customized to match the type of roads and/or the mood of the driver.

HEADS-UP DISPLAY (HUD)

To help keep the driver’s eyes on the road ahead, the new RX comes equipped with an optional Heads-Up Display (HUD) designed to aid drivers as they monitor a wide range of information - conveniently placed in their field of vision. The HUD allows drivers to move only their eyes when seeking information such as audio, speed, current gear, and RPM. While HUD systems have been previously implemented in Lexus vehicles, the MY20 RX features a host of new icons, including a speed limit display, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and a “Master Warning” indicator that relays any potential emergency or cautions.

As the largest HUD ever offered by Lexus, generous dimensions measuring 240 mm x 90 mm enable a wide array of information to be displayed. A special optical mechanism projects the information shown on the color TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display onto the windshield glass – resulting in a hovering image that appears to be exactly two meters ahead of the vehicle.

While other displays tend to wash out in sunlight, the RX’s TFT has been engineered to provide excellent luminosity, ensuring clear visibility on extremely bright days. Glare and “double-imaging” is prevented by a wedge-shaped interlayer sandwiched between two layers of windshield glass, providing consistent legibility and another example of Human-Centered designed.

REVISED GRILLE WITH ‘L’ MOTIF

Turning heads wherever it goes, the RX possesses a striking front fascia that helped forge a distinct visual identity since its release as an all-new model in 2016. Before every model in the Lexus portfolio possessed a unique interpretation of the spindle-shape, RX broke new ground with a vastly more expressive grille that strove to position Lexus as an automaker with a distinct point of view on design.

For the 2020 midcycle refresh, non F-Sport RX models receive a revised grille that benefits from Lexus designers’ measured touch. Visual strength and distinctiveness are increased through minor changes to the shape of the spindle-shaped grille. By slightly raising the bottom border to visually match the body sides, designers gave RX a newfound aura of athleticism and grace.

Look closely and you may also notice the design motif of the non F-Sport RX is no longer characterized by straight horizontal lines. In their place is an “L”-shaped block mesh that accentuates the unity of the Lexus’ SUV lineup while providing more depth and character to the grille. Furthermore, the new design features differing upper and lower sections, with the flow of the mesh changing as it radiates outward from the central badge, giving the front end a sense of motion.

As the face of our vehicles – something both owners and passerby experience when viewing - any changes to the front fascia are significant. RX’s evolutionary changes have transformed the very nature of the vehicle into an LUV that stresses luxury and sport like no other vehicle in the marketplace.

VISUALIZATION OF TRACTION

The petrol version of the new RX features an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option that ensures optimal traction off the line and atop a variety of driving surfaces. In an effort to combat “tight corner braking phenomenon” - an AWD condition where the vehicle unintentionally slows down during sharp turns because of differences in wheel rotations – Lexus engineers have implemented an ingenious torque distribution technology called Situation-Specific Control. In addition, they’ve incorporated an AWD Operation Display (a Lexus first) into the multi-information display for the utmost in driver awareness.

Engaging the AWD system’s Situation-Specific Control torque distribution control is simple. When accelerating from a standstill on a slick surface, such as snow or sand, drivers can press the LOCK switch, which sends the maximum amount of torque to the rear tires (they usually possess the most traction during acceleration) for the most effective means of optimizing grip. Once the system recognizes that the vehicle traveling in a stable manner, it will decrease the distribution of torque to the rear wheels, resulting in enhanced overall fuel economy. Also, the system automatically disengages AWD mode when braking, thus improving stopping performance.

And, for the first time ever in a Lexus vehicle, the front and rear torque distribution levels are presented on the multi-information display located on the dashboard. This provides the driver with a high level of reassurance on slick roads.

8-SPEED TRANSAXLE

When the 8-speed transaxle made its 2016 debut in the RX, it represented a world first for front-engine/front-wheel-drive vehicles. Lexus engineers have taken that revolutionary unit and enhanced it in every way for the new RX. The new 8-speed transaxle delivers better fuel economy and dynamic performance by using a wider gear range than its predecessor. It also exhibits smoother shifting by way of closer gear ratios, while also ensuring both cornering and straight-line stability that give the driver more control and confidence.

While the aggressive shifting nature of some sporty transmissions tend to be “busy” and “jerky,” the RX’s new 8-speed transaxle features Linear Driveforce Management that allows the maximum amount of engine torque to be utilized in each gear, improving not just acceleration, but overall driving feel. For example, when demanding quick acceleration above a constant speed held by the driver, the system can choose a higher gear for acceleration, reducing the frequency of downshifts. But when a downshift is required and performed, the system automatically minimizes the drive force, providing a smooth, linear deceleration character that results in a high level of vehicle control in line with the driver’s accelerator inputs.

Because engine torque is always managed to reflect the user’s driving style, the RX’s new 8-speed transaxle delivers a constant and smooth driving force that equates to a more vibrant on-road performance with less driving fatigue.

lexus,2016 RX

For everything from music and fashions to food and holiday destinations, interest and desirability will wane over time as people seek new ideas and experiences.

Just the same trends affect the motor industry, and in the early 1990s the love affair between motorists and large-scale SUVs was showing signs of coming to an end. Sales figures for the premium market showed people moving back to more conventional choices such as sedans and wagons.

Lexus had already made its mark as a disruptor in the auto business when it arrived on the scene in 1989. Now it saw another opportunity to challenge the status quo and bring something completely new to the market.

The foundations were laid for the RX, a Lexus model that has consistently delivered success and innovation. Not only did the RX create a new market segment, it also went on to become the first luxury market vehicle to feature a self-charging hybrid electric powertrain.

CREATING A NEW KIND OF CAR – THE LUXURY CROSSOVER

Just as much as traditional SUVs had qualities that strongly appealed to motorists, they also had their downsides, which meant vehicle owners had to make compromises.

People liked the high driving position, the great all-round visibility, the perceived strength and stability, and the cool, rugged image of SUVs. The negatives were that they were awkward to drive around town, difficult to get in and out of, offered meagre fuel economy and handled poorly on the road.

Focusing on the positives and addressing the shortcomings, Lexus came up with a radical new concept – what came to be known as the luxury crossover.

ENTER THE FIRST GENERATION RX

The thinking behind the RX’s development was distilled into a simple concept: it should as comfortable and powerful as a passenger car, and it should be capable of off-road driving like an SUV.

Chief Engineer Tsuneo Uchimoto explained: “Many car makers would simply have built a smaller version of (their large SUV) or perhaps adapted an existing truck or SUV platform.

“We were able to throw away the usual constraints and think of this new product not in traditional terms of pick-up or SUV or MPV or luxury sedan. Instead we could incorporate the most desirable attributes of all those vehicles.”

DESIGNED FOR PURPOSE

Lexus shunned the traditional SUV format of a body attached to a separate frame. Instead, it used a single, monocoque construction like that for a car. In fact, it built the RX on the same platform as its ES 300 mid-size sedan - at the time, its best-selling model in North America. The result was a lightweight but highly rigid vehicle that handled smoothly and stably, without the body roll associated with many taller SUVs. It also looked less like a workhorse, with more rounded and aerodynamically efficient styling.

Its dynamic prowess was supported by MacPherson strut suspension with anti-roll bars front and rear, while the use of active engine mounts reduced vibration for a more comfortable ride. Thanks to reduced ground clearance, getting in and out of the RX was an easier one-step action, compared to taller SUVs.

The engine was also shared with the ES, a 3.0-litre V6 petrol unit, mounted transversely and matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. With 223 DIN hp, it could move the car from rest to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. Key boxes were ticked: styling, acceleration, handling and quietness were all of luxury car quality.

OFF-ROAD ENGINEERING

RX customers were given the choice of front or all-wheel drive to suit their driving needs and lifestyle. The AWD had genuine SUV ability, fitted with a viscous coupling in the centre differential that allowed a 50:50 split in drive torque between the front and rear axles. For even stronger performance off-road or in low-grip conditions, a Torsen limited-slip differential was also available.

A WARM WELCOME

The RX was destined first for the American market and it made its world debut at the 1997 Chicago Auto Show, branded as an “SLV” – Sport Luxury Vehicle” (it was some years before the term “crossover” would be coined). The public reception was warm, as was the response of the first journalists who drove the car at the end of the year. Initial sales were strong, both in the USA (42,000 units in the first year) and in Europe, where the RX was introduced in a refreshed version in 2000.

THE LUXURY MARKET GAME-CHANGER

The RX may have been well received, but no one could then have imagined just how quickly it would spark a transformation in the luxury car business. Within just a few years, every major luxury car maker had come up with its own take on the RX, making the crossover segment the most popular in the premium market.

Once again, Lexus had disrupted the market and set standards its rivals had to follow. But the RX story still had another radical chapter to come.

THE WORLD’S FIRST HYBRID LUXURY VEHICLE

The second generation RX debuted in 2003 sporting a more eye-catching design that was also more aerodynamic. Once again, there was a V6 engine under the bonnet, but the five-speed automatic transmission was new. This was a larger vehicle, too, with a longer wheelbase and more room inside. At the same time as the new model was revealed, Lexus announced it would also be building a hybrid version – what would be the first hybrid luxury model in the world.

The RX 400h appeared the following year, equipped with a 211 DIN hp 3.3-litre V6 engine and a 167 DIN hp electric motor, giving a full system output of 272 DIN hp – comparable to the power of a 4.0-litre V8. As a full hybrid, the RX could be driven in petrol or electric modes alone, or in a combination of both. Lexus Hybrid Drive automatically sourced power from the engine or electric motor to achieve the best possible efficiency, reflected in the RX 400h’s 8.3 l/100 km fuel economy.

THE TECHNOLOGY PIONEER

Using hybrid didn’t deprive the RX of all-wheel drive capability. Lexus’ new E-four system used an independent electric motor on the rear axle to give 4x4 performance when required, without the weight and fuel consumption penalties associated with mechanical AWD systems.

Once again, the RX broke new ground and established Lexus as an industry-leading technology pioneer. The RX 400h was just the start of a comprehensive hybrid programme that has seen the technology constantly improved and introduced to all parts of the Lexus range. To date, more than 1.45 million Lexus hybrids have been sold worldwide.

THE RX TODAY

The RX’s global success has helped inspire the development of a family of Lexus crossover SUVs, including the mid-size NX, launched in 2014, and the compact UX, which arrived in 2019.

The latest generation RX 450h exemplifies many of the qualities that distinguish Lexus in today’s luxury car market, displaying brave design, takumi craftsmanship in its luxury appointments and the application of advanced technologies for ever higher levels of safety, performance and on-board comfort and entertainment.

SPACE FOR SEVEN

More spacious than ever before, the RX has also evolved into a seven-seat model, the RX L. True to Lexus’ reputation for quality, this has not been a matter of simply squeezing two extra seats into the cabin. Instead, the company effectively created a new model, with body length extended by 110 mm and the back window set at a steeper angle to ensure those sitting in the rearmost seats are as comfortably accommodated as other passengers.

lexus,History,2016 RX

The 2020 Lexus RX

<pp:caseid>360884</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
The RX is one of the most significant models in Lexus’ 30-year history. The original RX, launched in 1998, was a unique proposition in its day: an SUV that was luxurious, comfortable and easy to drive, in particular in urban environments where conventional SUVs proved unwieldy. It was an instant success and inspired a new and vital market segment in which today almost every premium manufacturer is represented.

Across two decades, Lexus has constantly improved the RX, which quickly became its worldwide best-selling model. Cumulative global sales to date have reached 3 million units. Its importance to the brand is witnessed by the fact it became Lexus’ – and the world’s – first luxury self-charging hybrid vehicle, with the market introduction of the RX 400h in 2005.

The current, fourth generation RX pushed the boundaries of the luxury SUV concept even further on its launch in 2015, as it acquired more emotional design and more engaging driving dynamics, and increased its market appeal with the addition of the seven-seat RX L model in 2018.

The 2020 RX has benefited from further improvements in a series of design, technical and dynamic upgrades that go well beyond the usual level of changes implemented in a product’s mid-lifecycle, in line with Lexus’ determination to exceed customers’ expectations.

Chief Engineer Takeaki Kato said: “In developing the new model I was determined to keep and further refine the ‘one-of-a-kind’ value that only the RX could create, which has been cultivated since the first generation.”

The changes he and his team have delivered are led by new, evolutionary styling that maintains the RX’s powerful and sporty appearance, while introducing more elegant elements and creating a coherent flow from front to rear, giving the vehicle a stronger, unified look. Details of the frontal treatment include a new rendition of the signature Lexus grille, with a mesh pattern of radiating “L” shapes that forms a design link to the UX urban crossover; slimmer headlight units; more rounded edges to the front bumper; and an extended line from the rocker panel that connects with the bottom of the grille to project strength and stability. At the rear, a more elegant and powerful look has been created with a redesigned lower bumper that links smoothly to the rear wings. Elements such as the lights, reflectors, underguard and exhaust outlets are arranged on a strong horizontal axis to emphasise the vehicle’s width and sense of purpose, while new LED combination lights feature a series of L motifs for the brake and tail lights and turn indicators.

The human-machine interface in the cabin has been improved with the availability of a new 12.3-inch central display that has a touchscreen function. To accommodate this new feature, the screen has been moved further forward on the centre console, within easy reach of the driver and front passenger. The multimedia functions can also be operated using a new trackpad version of Lexus’ Remote Touch Interface, or with voice control.

The new RX also provides seamless smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Voice control can also be enabled via smartphones to Apple Siri of the Google Assistant.

The third-row seats of the RX L now feature two different seating positions, being electronically adjustable, they add even more leg space (+95 mm) when the situation demands it. The second-row seats of the RX L have been reconfigured to include Captain Seats, helping to create a spacious and comfortable cabin for rear-seat occupants.

Dynamic improvements have been achieved by giving the new RX a more rigid body, using laser screw welding, additional spot welds and high-strength adhesive at key points around the chassis. The suspension has been improved with a new, stiffer rear anti-roll bar, more rigid hubs and the use of a new Friction Control Device in the shock absorbers to further reduce high-frequency vibrations from small imperfections in the road surface.

The Adaptive Variable Suspension available for the new RX provides almost constantly variable damping control at each wheel. The new RX also gains Active Cornering Assist, which automatically suppresses understeer if the driver steps on the throttle in mid-corner. The electric power steering has been retuned for a more linear steering feel and better line-tracing faithful to the driver’s intentions.

The latest version of Lexus Safety System + provides additional protection to help prevent an accident happening, or lessen the consequence if the vehicle is involved in an impact. The Pre-Collision System’s functionality has been increased, with pedestrian detection by day and night and daytime detection of bicyclists in the car’s path.

In a world-first, the new RX is available with a BladeScanTM Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), which uses a rapidly rotating blade-shaped mirror to direct light from the LED headlamps. It provides finer and deeper automatic forward illumination, making it easier to see pedestrians on the road margins. It also operates with no risk of dazzling drivers of vehicles ahead.

The new RX range will go on sale Europe-wide from October 2019, with introduction dates varying according to market.

</pp:summary>

DESIGN

The Lexus design team listened to feedback from current RX drivers around the world when developing their ideas for how they could refine the vehicle’s styling and make the new RX a car that would exceed customers’ expectations.

Development and production teams collaborated closely on the project, with the aim of giving the new RX the kind of Brave Design that is central to today’s Lexus models. The design theme was “seductive strength,” expressed in a more captivating exterior and maximising of the interior packaging – a quality that has proved particularly attractive to customers. The challenge to the designer team was to add elegance, but without diminishing the RX’s powerful SUV image.

Particular attention was paid to surface quality, incorporating more rounded, elegant surfaces at the front and rear. Finer details included changes to the shape, size and mesh pattern of the spindle grille, a new, narrow-aperture shape for the headlights and a distinctive new illumination signature for the rear combination lights.

Exterior design

In revising the RX’s exterior design, Lexus focused on the vehicle’s overall form and silhouette, taking into account the balance between the front and rear and aiming to create a powerful, solid look that generates a greater sense of unity from one end of the vehicle to the other. This can be seen in the body line that flows directly from the front bumper to the sides of the doors, while the shape of the rocker panel now extends from below the doors, flowing into the bottom edge of the front grille, generating a powerful and stable appearance.

The front bumper itself has been changed from a straight and sharp form to being slightly rounded. The surface quality appears tauter, while still being in harmony with the overall design. The shape of the underguard has been changed too, so that it wraps around to the sides, emphasising the width and subtle ruggedness of an urban SUV.

The spindle grille is a central design element for all Lexus models and for the new RX a designer was assigned to work solely on this element of the vehicle. It took almost six months to hand-craft a new mesh pattern, comprising thousands of individual lines.

The bottom edge of the spindle grille frame has been raised, changing the frame’s proportions to harmonise with the sides of the vehicle bodywork. The grille features a new L-shaped block mesh that changes in size as it radiates away from the central Lexus emblem. This design was introduced on the new UX urban crossover, and its application on the new RX creates a new unity within Lexus’ SUV line-up.

The new headlight units present a strong and deeper Lexus signature, with even illumination across the entire surface of the daytime running lights. The same compact headlight unit as Lexus’ LC flagship coupe is adopted, with three projector bi-LEDs. In addition, F SPORT and LUXURY grades use the world’s first BladeScan Adaptive High-beam System, a technology breakthrough that provides deeper and more even illumination (details below).

At the side, the continuity between the front overhang and the doors has been accentuated, with the peak of the cross-section running straight along the side of the vehicle, strengthening the dynamic impression.

At the rear, the “seductive strength” theme can be seen in a new character line which runs from the side of the bumper to the lower reflector, shaped to echo the flow of the rear window graphic. The profile of the bumper matches the form that flows rearwards from the quarter panel, creating a sleeker look.

The bottom edge of the rear bumper has been lowered and all the rear design elements have been set on a horizontal axis, including the combination lights, reflectors, exhaust outlets and the underguard, giving a stronger impression of width and more powerful stance.

The combination lights have a new design of four overlapping L motifs. This distinctive pattern is inverted for the sequential turn indicators, which are set parallel to the upper brake/tail lights.

Two new exterior colours, Terrane Khaki and Ice Ecru, are added to the palette. The exterior styling changes are completed by new 20-inch alloy wheels with silver multi-spoke design.

Aerodynamic features

A number of aerodynamic elements are incorporated in the bodywork, which help achieve a 0.33 drag coefficient and also contribute to vehicle stability and low cabin noise levels.

They include:

A front under spoiler which directs airflow to the underbody, reduces aerodynamic drag and supports driving stability

Fin-shaped corner sections beneath the headlights which improve airflow along the sides of the vehicle

Front pillars designed to create less wind noise during high-speed driving

Aero-stabilising fins on the tail-light covers, which wrap into the rear wings to give extra aerodynamic stability at the rear of the vehicle

A rear spoiler across the width of the roof/tailgate window, which reduces lift and adds rear downforce

A diffuser beneath the rear bumper, which smoothly draws airflow from beneath the vehicle, reducing drag and giving extra stability

Interior design

The cabin design strikes a balance between functionality and luxury, finished with refined materials that exude quality construction and craftsmanship. The ambience is spacious yet intimate, with high levels of comfort for driver and passengers.

To accommodate the new human-machine interface, the screen has been moved further forward on the centre console, within easy reach of the driver and front passenger. The middle column has been redesigned for better trackpad version of Lexus’ Remote Touch Interface integration.

The RX’s seats deliver both support and comfort with an ergonomic design and quality detailing that includes a vertical stitching pattern that is both good-looking and durable. The quilting pattern on the front seat seatbacks matches that on the door panel trims.

The driver and front passenger seats are low-set, allowing for excellent headroom. The position of the steering wheel closer to the driver and a lowered angle for the steering column create a more involving driving position.

The new interior colour is available: Ochre.

The F SPORT grade features refined genuine materials in the interior trim, such as premium leather, natural wood, and brushed aluminium. The new interior colours feature Flare Red and Black and White combinations.

New RX L seating option

The new Lexus RX L gives customers the choice of specifying a three-seat second row bench that divides 60:40, or two individual captain’s seats, with manual fold and recline adjustment. The second row also benefits from a slide range extended by an extra 45 mm to 165 mm, providing easier access to the third-row seats.

Third row seats can be moved forward and backward electronically depending on the customer’s needs, providing additional legroom (+95 mm) for people sitting in the third row. The third-row seat adjustment can be operated via a button from second row or the boot.

Dimensions and packaging

The current generation RX was designed with a more spacious interior, particularly for rear seat passengers. By using a new frame construction for the front seats, more legroom was obtained for the rear passengers, adding an extra 20 mm of knee clearance compared to the previous model. And to help front seat occupants find the ideal seat position, the seat height adjustment range was increased by 15 mm.

The RX is both longer and wider than the previous generation model: width grew by 10 mm to 1,895 mm and length by 120 mm to 4,890 mm; the height was unchanged at 1,685 mm.

The extra length crucially saw 50 mm added to the wheelbase (2,790 mm), allowing for a more spacious and comfortable interior to be designed.

Lexus has comfortably accommodated an extra, third row of seats in the RX L model by adding 110 mm to the rear overhang, taking the vehicle’s overall length to 5,000 mm, and by giving the tailgate window a steeper angle to secure generous headroom for the rearmost passengers.

RX F SPORT

The RX F SPORT raises the sporty image to a higher level with a series of special visual and performance features that distinguishes it from other RX grades.

Exterior details include a black finish to the F SPORT exclusive spindle grille mesh and a new mirror black frame that blends into the side of the front bumpers providing a unified profile. The lower spoiler and a satin-chrome front under guard complete the front fascia redesign.

The 20-inch F SPORT wheels have a multi-spoke design and are fitted with 235/55 tyres.

The interior is styled to suit the F SPORT’s character with exclusive details such as highly supportive seats with quilted upholstery, aluminium trim inserts and the choice of a Black, Black with white accents and Flare Red with black accents colour-way. The shift lever and three-spoke steering wheel are also specific to F SPORT, and covered in a tactile perforated leather, and there are drilled, non-slip aluminium sports pedals.

The instrument cluster is different, too, with an eight-inch display dominated by a larger, circular gauge that cleverly combines the functions of a tachometer and speedometer.

POWERTRAINS

The new RX retains the model’s well-proven range of efficient and responsive powertrains:

The RX 450h equipped with a self-charging hybrid electric powertrain, featuring a highly efficient 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine

The RX 300 with a 2.0-litre turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine

The RX 350 powered by a 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission

The RX 450h is available across all European markets; the RX 300 is offered in selected markets; and the RX 350 is sold in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan and the Caucasus region.

RX 450h

The RX 450h’s self-charging full hybrid system features a 3.5-litre direct injection V6 petrol engine, with maximum output of 193 kW/262 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm with 335 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. The total system output (engine and electric motor combined) amounts to 230 kW/313 DIN hp.

The engine’s combustion chamber design generates a high degree of tumble inside the cylinders, improving combustion performance. According to the WLTP cycle, CO2 emissions start from 172 g/km and fuel consumption goes from 7.6 l/100km to 7.9 l/100km. (Correlated NEDC figures: fuel consumption combined: from 5.8l/100km, CO2 emissions start from 132 g/km)

The powertrain of the 2020 Lexus RX has remained unchanged and the below improvements apply to the 4th generation Lexus RX. The key components and control systems in the Lexus Hybrid Drive System have been improved and re-engineered to deliver class-leading fuel economy, minimal emissions and excellent on-road performance. The front transaxle gained a new water-cooled transmission oil cooler for the electric motor and a pre-loaded differential to improve performance and straight-line stability.

The rear transaxle featured in the E-Four system used by the all-wheel drive version of the RX 450h was redesigned with a three-shaft configuration, creating a more compact unit in which the input shaft can be moved as close as possible to the output shaft. The design also saves weight by using aluminium for the case and cover.

The shape of the intake ports and combustion chambers generates a high degree of tumble inside the cylinders, improving combustion efficiency.

Other updates to the system included a design evolution of the Power Control Unit (PCU), and HV Engine Control Unit (ECU) that delivers better energy efficiency, more driver-friendly operation and more refined performance. A lighter, more efficient electric water pump was introduced and the hybrid battery was repackaged, making it more compact and improving space efficiency. The E-Four electric all-wheel drive system’s control functions were improved to give better response when accelerating through bends.

RX 300

The RX 300 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers superior fuel economy and driving performance, characterised by crisp throttle response and instant torque delivery throughout the rev range.

The unit produces 238 DIN hp/175 kW between 4,800 and 5,600 rpm, and 350 Nm of torque from 1,650 to 4,000 rpm. Combined cycle fuel consumption (WLTP data) is from 9.6 to 10.4 l/100 km with the CO2 emissions starting from 218g/km to 236g/km. (Correlated NEDC figures: fuel consumption combined: from 8.1 l/100km, CO2 emissions start from 185 g/km)

The transmission is a six-speed Electronically Controlled Transaxle (6ECT) automatic, a lightweight and compact unit engineered for efficiency and performance. Key features include a reduced-friction clutch and thrust bearings, an electric oil pump and a torque converter developed specifically for use with the 2.0-litre turbo engine.

The engine benefits from Lexus’ ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficiency Combustion) and D-4ST direct fuel injection. ESTEC improves the engine’s thermal efficiency through better combustion in each cylinder. D-4ST supports combustion efficiency with a chamber design that gives a high tumble ratio.

The twin-scroll turbocharger features an air-to-liquid intercooler and is mounted directly on the engine. It delivers optimal torque from low to high rev ranges and has a light, compact design achieved with new manufacturing technologies and materials. Further benefits include reduced friction in the bearing mechanism for better overall performance, reduced noise and vibration, cleaner emissions and increased component strength and durability.

The engine’s efficiency is also helped by a high, 10.0:1 compression ratio, a balance shaft (reducing noise and vibration), a lightweight roller/rocker valvetrain, a piston-cooling oil jet control system and VVT-i intelligent variable valve-timing (“wide” VVTi-W on the intake side).

The engine operates on the highly fuel-efficient Atkinson cycle.

RX 350

Performance, fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with smooth, highly refined running in everyday driving are characteristics of the RX 350’s 3.5-litre direct injection V6 engine. Power is rated at 300 DIN hp/221 kW at 6,300 rpm, with 370 Nm of torque generated at 4,700 rpm.

A new cylinder head design with reshaped intake ports and combustion chambers – which increased the compression ratio to 11.8:1 – helps raise combustion efficiency, while friction losses between the piston and bore have been reduced by a new cylinder machining method and resin coating.

As with the 2.0-litre turbo engine, the V6 reaps the benefits of VVT-i/VVT-iW variable valve-timing and Atkinson cycle operation, without compromising engine start-up performance in extremely cold weather, or wide-open throttle driving.

A number of features contribute to its status as the highest-performing engine yet for an RX model:

Increased flow velocity, achieved by reducing the cylinder head’s intake port diameter, improving high rev range performance and giving a steep, continuous acceleration curve.

A lightweight roller/rocker system, with a reduced-friction timing chain and lighter internal parts, allowing higher engine speeds and lower friction losses in the valvetrain.

An exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR), which reintroduces cool exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber, helping maintain an optimal engine operating temperature.

A variable-length surge tank which prevents a loss of torque at mid-range engine speeds.

An oil pump that sends an optimal amount of lubricant to each part.

Power is delivered through a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, with close gear ratios tuned to deliver punch off the line and robust passing power, while maintaining excellent fuel economy.

Other advanced transmission features include Linear Driveforce Management, maximising engine torque for each gear; Downshift Control which matches the driver’s accelerator pedal input – smooth or rapid – with an appropriate downshift response; and a Multi-mode function that allows rapid up and downshifts using paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

All-wheel drive systems

The all-wheel drive versions of the RX 300 and RX 350 use a Dynamic Torque Control system which operates using data from a series of sensors monitoring G forces, wheel speed, steering angle and other vehicle parameters. Drive torque is instantaneously routed to the rear wheels to gain maximum traction on different surfaces and in different driving conditions. The torque distribution ranges from 100:0 (pure front-wheel drive) to 50:50, via an electronically controlled coupling. This gives the effectiveness of a full-time AWD system, but with superior fuel economy.

The all-wheel drive version of the RX 450h uses Lexus’ proactive E-Four system, provided by an additional motor/generator located on the rear axle. Fuel and energy use are reduced, as AWD operation is limited to only when necessary, allowing the rear-mounted motor to act as a generator to charge the battery when the vehicle’s regenerative braking system is operating.

Torque distribution levels front and rear and to each individual wheel can be shown on the driver’s multi-information display.

F SPORT Tuning

A tuned sound generator with three resonance frequencies is available for the RX 350 F SPORT. This uses air intake pulses to raise the sound pressure level of frequencies that are pleasant to the ear and enhance the driving experience. Light and relaxed sound is generated in mid to high rpm acceleration, with a more powerful note produced at higher engine speeds.

CHASSIS AND DRIVING DYNAMICS

Lexus targeted better driving performance, in particular handling stability, for the new RX, and also sought to improve ride comfort and give the driver a greater sense of unity with the vehicle. An increase in body rigidity has been central to achieving these goals, through an increase in the number of spot welds and a greater amount of structural adhesive in the vehicle’s construction. Detailed adjustments and changes have also been made to the suspension and damping system.

Body rigidity

Lexus engineers identified key areas in the rocker panels, rear wheelhouses and the underbody where additional spot welds and the use of structural adhesive could deliver a more rigid body for the new RX. In all, an extra 4.2 metres of adhesive and 14 weld points have been added in these areas, accomplished using the existing tooling on the production line at the Kyushu plant. This increases the integrity of the panel joints, benefiting both stability ride comfort.

Laser screw welding is also used in the RX’s construction and high-tensile strength steel is used in key areas such as the underbody cross members and the front and centre pillar sections. A ring-frame construction technique adds strength to the frame sections around the front and rear doors, while areas around the rear body frame have numerous spot welds to give more strength and handling stability. These measures contribute to handling quality and cabin quietness, as well as the overall structural rigidity of the vehicle platform.

Suspension

The new RX offers more agile handling and driving pleasure, whether driving on urban streets or open, winding roads thanks to changes to its suspension and damping.

The key was to increase suspension rigidity, focusing on the hub bearings to gain improved responsiveness. At the same time, a thicker rear anti-roll bar has been added with a hollow rather than solid form. This decreases the roll angle, reduces understeer and also saves weight.

The thickness of the anti-roll bar allows for a reduction in coil spring rates, ensuring a high level of overall ride quality. The spring rates and bushing rigidity of the rear suspension are calibrated to complement the sturdiness of the car’s front end.

MacPherson struts are used for the front suspension, with trailing arms/double wishbones at the rear – a set-up designed to give extra stability through corners and excellent handling overall.

Friction Control Device

A new friction control device has been introduced in the front and rear shock absorbers to help give a flat ride on roads with slightly uneven surfaces, and to improve steering responsiveness.

The device is located inside the shock absorbers and has a rubber lip that helps reduce the high frequency vibrations that are generated by minor unevenness in the road surface and can’t be controlled using hydraulic pressure.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS)

The new RX adopts the latest Adaptive Variable Suspension technology, which allows for much finer control of damping force on each wheel to reduce shock and maintain a flat, comfortable ride even on very rough roads and surfaces. Damping force is reduced at low speeds and increased at high speeds, reducing body roll and enhancing steering response.

The actuator uses a linear solenoid, located on the lower side of each shock absorber, below the spring. This design contributes to a lower bonnet line and less intrusion in the rear load space.

The number of damping force levels has been increased to 650 to provide constantly variable damping. The result is smoother, quicker and more precise control in response to changes in road surface quality and the driving conditions.

The system has a number of integrated functions, including Roll Posture Control, Anti-Pitch Control, Repercussion Control and Roughness Sensing Control, to adapt AVS performance to all road surfaces and driving dynamics.

On models equipped with AVS, the Drive Mode Select system adds Sport S, Sport S+ and Customise selectable drive modes, raising performance and driver rewards (further details below).

Active stabiliser suspension

The RX F SPORT grades offer a world-first active stabiliser suspension system. This suppresses roll without detracting from ride comfort, and maintains stability when turning.

There are two control modes, operating in line with the Drive Mode selected by the driver. In Eco, Normal and Sport S modes, the focus is a composed, natural and comfortable vehicle posture, with initial turning response. With Sport S+ mode, the turning posture is more stable with more agile turning response.

When driving on uneven road surfaces, the Roll Skyhook Control helps maintain comfort by suppressing vehicle movement in the direction of body roll. The system detects the direction of vehicle roll from data from the vertical G sensor, then activates the appropriate stabiliser actuator to suppress the movement.

Steering

The RX’s electric power steering is calibrated to communicate excellent road feel to the driver. The rigidity of the intermediate shaft and the instrument panel also contributed to good steering feel, with refinement details such as a slowing the steering wheel movement as it returns to centre, adding to the overall controllability, smoothness and responsiveness. The steering wheel is set at an angle that makes it easy to hold the desired turning angle when driving deep into a bend.

Extended reach and rake adjustment makes it easy for the driver to set an ideal position, while the low-set steering column helps provide a sportier driving position.

Active Cornering Assist

The newly added for the RX 2020 models Active Cornering Assist maintains comfort while working to faithfully trace the driver’s desired line on winding roads or through bends, by suppressing the tendency to understeer that commonly occurs when the driver presses the throttle during high-G cornering.

The vehicle stability control (VSC) applies brake control to help prevent the car skidding when speed is too high during cornering. If the driver presses the throttle while the car is understeering in a high-G turn, the VSC will apply braking control to the inner wheels, generating a yaw moment and suppressing the understeer.

Brakes

The RX’s powerful braking system uses front and rear ventilated discs to obtain exceptional stopping power and fade resistance. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard.

Drive Mode Select

The RX’s Drive Mode Select system lets the driver choose from different settings to suit their preferences, or the driving conditions. Each setting adjusts the suspension damping force, engine output, throttle response and other chassis and engine parameters.

The standard system provides Normal, Eco and Sport modes, while versions of the RX fitted with Adaptive Variable suspension additionally feature Sport S, Sport S+ and – a Lexus first – Customise modes.

Eco mode moderates throttle response and engine power output and adjusts climate control operation to support fuel economy.

Normal mode provides an even balance between engine performance and fuel economy. Together with Eco mode, it provides a suspension setting that prioritises comfort.

Sport mode ramps up performance with sharper throttle response and acceleration and adds weight to the steering.

Sport S sets an even higher performance level, with revised throttle mapping and quicker powertrain response. In the RX 450h, the hybrid system allows for enhanced accelerator response and a feeling of more powerful acceleration.

Sport S+ combines the powertrain enhancements of Sport S mode, while sharpening the feel of the electric power steering and initiating stiffer suspension for flatter cornering.

The Customise mode lets the driver combine their preferred settings for the engine/hybrid system, chassis and air conditioning to suit their preference. This can be accomplished in an easy-to-follow process using the RX’s central display screen.

The driver can also make use of an EV mode which switches the vehicle to all-electric operation, shutting down the petrol engine until the limit of charge or speed is reached.

Noise and vibration measures

Lexus engineers scrutinised the smallest details to identify measures that might reduce noise and vibration levels to a minimum.

For example, a cowl silencer was deployed and holes and gaps in the dashboard silencer have been minimised to improve sound absorption and insulation. The surface area of the cowl insulator was increased and the bonnet insulator made thicker. The apron silencer is also 10 to 20 per cent larger, reducing the penetration of engine noise, while even the material used for the wheelhouse liner was changed, to a non-woven type, cutting road and gravel spatter noise.

To reduce wind noise around the front pillars, the shape of the cowl louvre, the triangular “patch” ahead of the quarterlight and the shape of the door mirror were adjusted. The door mirror units were moved further back to avoid wind turbulence, and a regulating lip was added to the cowl louvre, redirecting the airflow away from the mirror.

In addition, on the RX 450h and RX 300 FWD models, the dynamic damper installation and the left front suspension member mount have been adjusted to reduce any booming noise.

Other measures in the body include acoustic glass in the side windows, sound-damping coatings for the vehicle floor, careful positioning of the rear body frame to reduce lateral vibration and strategic use of foam/sponge vibration damping material around the door apertures and front header. Sound-absorbing materials are featured in key areas of the cabin, ceiling and floor to prevent the intrusion of noise from the engine compartment and from outside the vehicle, and the doors feature full-edge double seals.

ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES

Lexus Safety System +

The RX comes equipped with the latest version of Lexus Safety System +, an integrated safety package that delivers even higher levels of active safety and driver assistance to help prevent accidents happening, or reduce their severity should an impact be unavoidable.

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) uses a front-mounted camera and millimetre-wave radar to detect vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If it calculates a risk of a collision, it automatically warns the driver and provides extra braking force the moment the brake pedal is pressed. If the driver fails to react and the system judges a collision to be imminent, the brakes are automatically applied to reduce vehicle speed and the force of any impact, and the seatbelts are tensioned. The functionality of the PCS has been increased so that it is now capable of detecting pedestrians in the vehicle’s path in both day and night-time driving, and bicycle riders during daylight hours.

The same radar unit is used to provide all-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Once the way ahead is clear, the RX automatically accelerates to its pre-set cruising speed. The system is able to provide low-speed following, making driving more relaxing as well as safer in stop-start traffic.

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) detect when the RX deviates from its correct traffic lane, without the turn indicators being used. The system will automatically provide a warning andlane steering inputs to help keep the vehicle centred in its lane, detecting markings on the road surface, or the road margin. These features operate when the Adaptive Cruise Control is being used and can be switched off, if desired.

The driver also gains a “second set of eyes” when it comes to important road signs on motorways and major routes. The Road Sign Assist system uses a front camera to recognise principal warning and command signs, which are then replicated on the multi-information and head-up displays, reducing the risk of the driver not being aware of speed limits, lane closures and other important information.

Lexus Safety System + further includes Automatic High Beam (AHB), which detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead and automatically switches the headlights between high and low beam.

Advanced Driver Assist Features

World-first BladeScanTM Adaptive High-beam System

High grade models feature an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) which now adopts a world-first BladeScan technology; it provides even better illumination by adjusting light distribution to avoid dazzling other road users, instead of switching the headlights to low beam.

BladeScan gives the driver a wider field of illumination that conventional LED array-type headlights, with smooth and fine light distribution. The technology addresses the fact that many pedestrian accidents happen during night-time driving, making it easier for the driver to see pedestrians on the road margin further ahead.

In simple terms, light from the LEDs in the headlamp unit is projected onto a blade-shaped mirror that rotates at the speed of 6000rpm. The light reflected from the mirror passes rapidly through a lens to give forward illumination. Because of the residual image effect, there is no sense of the light moving, but in fact the light is turned on and off, time in perfect synchronisation with the rotation of the mirror, enable fine control of light distribution. The system allows the range of high beam illumination to be broadened naturally. As a result, road margins and other areas ahead that a particularly difficult of the driver to see become brighter and more visible. Pedestrians and road signs can be discerned earlier, without the risk of dazzling oncoming or preceding vehicles.

A lamp ECU in the left side headlight checks environmental information from the front camera, such as the presence of vehicles ahead and ambient brightness, together with vehicle speed and yaw rate information. Using this data, it operates the LEDs and adjusts brightness for optimum light distribution.

An array-type AHS changes light distribution in increments of one to two degrees. This can make the light appear to flicker, which can be uncomfortable for the driver. BladeScan has been developed with 0.1-degree increments in light distribution to give sufficiently bright light without appearing unnatural.

With a switched array-type system, pedestrians can be detected up to 32m ahead; with BladeScan this distance is extended to 56m.

The technology has been developed during the past 13 years by Lexus and Koito Manufacturing. The research determined the optimum design for a fan-shaped blade, durable enough to endure constant high-speed rotation at 6,000 rpm. This involved using a high-performance ball bearing in the small motor that rotates the mirror and fine adjustments to the position and balance.

Durability has been proven in running tests lasting more than 10,000 hours. Testing took into account whether operation might affect safety systems that use cameras, the impact of different weather conditions, such as fog, snow and rain on performance and whether the strobing of light could cause health problems

As well as meeting performance targets, the system also had to be accommodated in the RX’s new, narrower headlight units. Thanks to the close co-operation between Lexus and Koito Manufacturing, this was achieved so that each unit contains three projector bi-LEDs and an independent BladeScan unit.

Sway Warning

The cameras used in the RX’s Lane Tracing Assist also provide a Sway Warning function. This monitors the car’s position in its lane and the driver’s steering inputs. If it detects degrees of vehicle swaying, caused by driver distraction or drowsiness, it will sound an alert and display a warning on the multi-information display, recommending the driver takes a break.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) control

When the Pre-Collision System determines that there is a high likelihood of a collision, the Adaptive Variable Suspension Control system instantaneously adjusts shock absorber damping within the suspension to enhance the vehicle’s responsiveness as an additional driver aid (featured on vehicles equipped with AVS).

Panoramic View Monitor

Negotiating a tight parking space or making your way over rough and unmade surfaces are made easier and safer in the Lexus RX with a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor. This uses an array of cameras that give the driver an all-round view of the vehicle’s location, plus a bird’s eye view for even better sight the RX’s immediate surroundings.

The Panoramic View Monitor can reveal obstacles, hazards and other vehicles that may be hidden from view from the driver’s seat, eliminating any blind spots. When steering the car into parallel or series parking spaces, the Parking Assist Monitor can add guidelines to the real-time camera images to help the driver steer precisely, while front and rear sensors will sound an alert as the vehicle moves closer to another car or obstacle.

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

A Blind Spot Monitor uses rear-mounted radars to detect vehicles in adjacent lanes, or objects behind the RX when reversing. The same radars provide a Rear Cross Traffic Alert function, which warns the driver of traffic or people approaching from either side when reversing out of or into a parking space. It works in conjunction with a Blind Spot Monitor, using the same rear-mounted radar.

Parking Support Brake

The new RX adopts a Parking Support Brake system for safer parking and low-speed manoeuvres. If the system detects a risk of the vehicle making contact with a static object in front or behind, or with another vehicle approaching from either side at the rear, it will automatically apply drive and brake control to help avoid a collision and reduce damage.

The system includes the functions of the Intelligent Clearance Sonar and the Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake, enhancing visibility and making operation easier for the driver.

MULTIMEDIA AND AUDIO SYSTEMS

Lexus multimedia systems

For easier operation of the 12.3-inch Lexus multimedia system, the Remote Touch Interface has been changed to a touchpad. This responds to gesture controls – swipe, pinch, flick – like those used on tablets and smartphones.

At the same time, the display itself has a new touchscreen function, as an alternative to using the touchpad. To make operation easier when using touch controls, the screen has been moved forward so that it sits closer to the driver and front passenger.

To further improve connectivity and on-board personal entertainment options, the two USB ports have been moved to the front of the centre console and two more have been located on the rear of the unit, within easy reach of rear-seat passengers.

The standard Lexus multimedia system features an eight-inch TFT display on the centre console, operated by the Remote Touch Interface. The screen can be set to display a single panel (full map), two-panel (half map, half information), or three-panel (half map, two info screens) view. The driver can set their own information preferences, including navigation, fuel consumption, audio details and air conditioning settings.

Smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlayTM and Android AutoTM

Lexus has made smartphone integration easier by providing connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the new RX. With Android Auto, drivers can seamlessly access and use their phone on the car multimedia display. With larger on-screen targets, a simplified interface, and easy-to-use voice actions through the Google Assistant, it’s designed to minimize distraction, so you can stay focused on the road. Once connected, guests will enjoy music from apps such as Spotify® and Pandora®, or send messages through commonly used apps like WhatsApp®. The interface also allows them to navigate with Google Maps™ or Waze. With the Google Assistant in Android Auto, drivers can use their voice to get things done quickly and easily for a seamless, smooth, and enjoyable driving experience.

For Apple CarPlay integration, guests can use their iPhone® through the car multimedia display. When their iPhone is connected, commands for driving directions, phone calls, and sending and receiving messages via Siri® are enabled. They can also gain access to favourite apps like Apple Music, Apple Maps, Podcasts and Audiobooks, as well as third party apps like Waze or Spotify.

‘Over the air’ maps updates is another new feature included in the 2019 multimedia package, allowing users to automatically download the most recent maps for their in-car navigation system.* VC DCM and Lexus Link are also available in some markets.*( *Availability varies, please consult Lexus PR team in your market).

The centre console features a new smartphone holder and an extra USB port.

Apple and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Apple CarPlay is a trademark of Apple Inc. Android, Android Auto, Google Maps, Google Assistant are trademarks of Google LLC.

Pioneer nine-speaker audio

The standard audio package for the new RX is a nine-speaker Pioneer system that includes DAB radio reception, single CD player and Bluetooth.

Pioneer 12-speaker audio

Pioneer’s 12-speaker system, featured as a standard on F SPORT and available as an option on all other models, comes with a single DVD player and benefits from Coherent Source Transducer (CST) technology that gives extremely realistic and high-quality sound reproduction in the mid to high range and adds boost to low tones. The speaker array includes 200mm subwoofers and new 180mm woofers in the front doors.

Mark Levinson Premium Surround System

The Mark Levinson Premium Surround System available for the RX was designed specifically to work within the interior architecture of the vehicle to ensure the best possible listening experience throughout the cabin. It comprises 15 speakers: front and centre Unity 9 cm tweeters, a front elliptical woofer, two rear 2.5 cm tweeters, two rear 17 cm full range speakers, two 9 cm satellite mid-range units and a 20 cm rear sub-woofer.

The Unity 9 cm speakers feature high and mid-range cones with a single magnetic circuit. Bringing the cones as close together as possible helps achieve a smooth connection between the mid and high ranges, similar to a full-range speaker. The design is also more compact than coaxial speakers.

The Mark Levinson system uses Clari-Fi technology to restore the quality of compressed digital music files, producing rich low tones and crisp mid-to-high tones that envelop the listener, whatever the sound source. Quantum Logic Surround analyses the vocal, instrumental and musical atmosphere qualities of the music being played and allocates them to the appropriate speakers to build an accurate acoustic stage. This creates audio playback that faithfully reproduces the sound intended by the performer and the recording engineers.

tag,RX,2020 RX,2016 RX

The world’s bestselling luxury hybrid SUV and all-time best sold Lexus model

European Premiere to take place on June 30th at Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille

Lexus unveiled the new RX luxury SUV today, revealing evolutionary changes to the brand’s core model, which helped establish the luxury SUV segment when it was first introduced in 1998. Scheduled to go on sale in autumn 2019, the new RX is a testament to Lexus’ ongoing commitment to maintain its status as a pioneer of the luxury SUV segment.

The new RX exterior retains a powerful and sporty appearance, while the character line that runs from the front of the vehicle to the rear has been improved, giving the RX’s overall appearance exceptional flow and consistency. The result is an elegant, dynamic exterior that emphasises Lexus’ new design language.

In terms of the RX’s driving character, it embraces Lexus’ engaging performance following the path of LC and LS flagship coupe and sedan, as the engineers scrutinized every part of the vehicle, and made enhancements to the rigidity of the body and suspension system, as well as adding a new shock absorber and brake control system. The result is a vehicle with an excellent handling feel and precision, allowing users to accurately trace their desired driving lines.

Also, the new RX is equipped with the world’s first BladeScan Type AHS and the latest generation of Lexus Safety System +.

MAIN FEATURES OF THE NEW RX

AN ELEGANT, DYNAMIC EXTERIOR, COMBINED WITH A HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL INTERIOR

Exterior

Newly sculpted front and rear bumper designs achieve a flowing integration of character lines from front to rear, elevating the RX’s dynamic appearance.

Connecting the rocker panels to the bottom of the grille in a straight line delivers a feeling of heightened strength and stability.

Designers linked the lower bumper with the rear fenders, which blend with the window graphic on the bottom section of the rear pillar, lending a distinctively elegant and powerful shape to the rear.

Furthermore, by presenting components such as the muffler and the underbody shield to accentuate the vehicle’s width, the designers were able to provide the RX with a sporty, aggressive rear.

The signature Lexus spindle grille adds modulation to the ‘L’ pattern mesh and a new frame that blends into the side of the front bumpers providing a unified profile.

New slender headlamps give the front fascia a newfound sharpness. In the rear, combination lamps feature an “L” shape motif.

Interior

The third-row seats of the RX L now feature two different seating positions. Even more leg space is available with the new setting when the situation demands it.

The second-row seats of the RX L have been reconfigured to include Captain Seats*[5], adding 95 mm of legroom for the third row seats and helping to create a spacious and comfortable cabin for RX’s rear-seat occupants.

ENHANCED STABILITY AND LINEAR STEERING FEEL WITH THE RX’S SIGNATURE RIDE COMFORT

One of the changes to the new RX is the enhancements that contribute to driving pleasure resulting from changes to the suspension and increased body rigidity. Lexus Chief Engineer Takeaki Kato was determined to deliver pleasurable driving experience through agile handling and enhanced driving pleasure, and his engineering team worked closely with the production team to achieve this goal.

Laser Screw Welding (LSW) and spot welding have been extensively employed throughout the vehicle, along with the increased use of high-strength adhesives (4.2 meters of strategically placed adhesive). In combination with the stiffening of stabilizer bars (now hollow and 1 mm wider) and enhanced hub rigidity, the result is a more immediate response to steering inputs.

The new RX features Active Cornering Assist (ACA) that suppresses understeer when stepping on the throttle in mid-corner, as well as dramatic improvements in the tuning of the EPS, all of which result in a truly linear steering feel, allowing the RX to accurately trace the desired driving line in all types of conditions.

The redesigned RX’s shock absorbers are now equipped with a new Friction Control Device (FCD)*[6] which further reduces high- frequency vibrations caused by minute road surface imperfections. The shock absorbers also enable the RX to conduct flat cornering and achieve exceptional responsiveness.

SEGMENT-LEADING LEVELS OF SAFETY AND COMFORT PROVIDED BY THE WORLD’S FIRST BLADESCAN TYPE AHS AND THE LATEST LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM+

BladeScan Type AHS

Lexus is a pioneer in automotive lighting technologies, and was the first automaker to equip vehicles with LED headlamps and the Adaptive High beam System (AHS) to enhance safety with oncoming traffic. In the new RX, Lexus once again introduces a world’s first with the BladeScan Type AHS. LED-sourced light shines onto two blade mirrors spinning at high speed, and the light is transferred to a lens to illuminate the road ahead. While the light does not appear to be moving, the BladeScan Type AHS precisely controls light distribution by synchronizing the rotation of the blade mirror and switching the LED headlamps on and off. Because the effect of the high beam can be expanded in a more natural manner, the system illuminates spots that may be difficult to see with conventional high-beam systems, such as the shoulder of the road. It also allows the driver to recognize pedestrians and road signs much earlier, without impeding the visibility of drivers in the vehicle, or drivers traveling in the opposite direction. Better visibility at nighttime was improved to reach 56 metres of front visibility compared to 32 in the previous system (Array type AHS).

Lexus Safety System +

The new RX also comes equipped with the latest version of Lexus Safety System +, featuring advanced safety and accident prevention technologies. Main features of Lexus Safety System + include:

The Pre-Collision System uses an in-vehicle camera and front-grille-mounted millimetre-wave radar to help spot bicyclists during daytime and pedestrians during low-light conditions.

By combining Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), the new RX makes it easier for the driver to stay in the lane. If the system detects a potential lane departure, then LTA alerts the driver with a visual warning and either an audible alert or steering wheel vibration (it may also apply a small steering correction).

Road Sign Assist (RSA) acquires road sign information using a camera and navigation maps and displays them on the Head-Up Display (HUD) and multi-information display, which reduces possible driver failure to recognize signs, and encourages safe driving.

CONNECTIVITY TECHNOLOGY ADDS APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO, AS WELL AS TOUCHSCREEN AND TOUCHPAD

The new RX features a new touch-display screen in addition to the Lexus-original remote touch interface

(which changes from controller-type to trackpad-type)

Smartphone usage is incorporated into the design ,with a new phone holder and USB port, plus connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Voice control is enabled via customers’ phones to Apple Siri or Google Assistant. Likewise, drivers can select either Lexus navigation or smartphone versions.

Autocar ‘Used Car of the Year’ Award goes to Lexus IS

Lexus dominates Auto Express ‘Most Reliable Used Car’ List

Brussels, Belgium - The annual AUTOCAR AWARDS recognise some of the industry’s most significant cars and characters. Lexus is pleased to communicate that the Lexus IS has won the coveted Autocar Used Car of the Year 2016 award.

Explaining its decision, Autocar said: “What we have seen and heard from owners, mechanics and the car trade convinced us that there is no other model so deserving of the title. The simple fact is that no one has a bad word to say about their Lexus IS.”

Autocar Editorial Director Jim Holder, added: “We selected the Lexus because it’s inexpensive to buy, has a reliability record that’s the envy of the industry and it’s extremely cost-effective to run.”

Combining elegance with sporty dynamism, the IS offers the perfect balance of luxurious comfort and performance. Since the launch of the first generation IS in 1999, Lexus has already sold more than 180,000 units in Europe. The 2016 range includes the full hybrid IS 300h and the new IS 200t, powered by a 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine.

Lexus has also dominated the AUTO EXPRESS 2016 DRIVER POWER SURVEY, with Lexus models topping three categories for the UK’s most reliable used cars.

Our three winning models were the IS as the most reliable used compact executive car, the RX as the most reliable used 4×4 or SUV, and the GS as the most reliable used executive car. Our CT was also runner-up in the most reliable compact family cars category.

The 2016 Driver Power car customer satisfaction survey asked 50,000 UK car owners how they rated their cars for reliability, with the data providing an invaluable insight for anyone considering the purchase of a new car. This is a good indicator of what real owners think of their cars, across a wide range of categories including reliability, build quality, handling, performance, running costs and more.

Steve Fowler, Editor-in-Chief of Auto Express, said “it seems to be a given that Lexus will dominate the reliability charts in our Driver Power Survey, so it’s no surprise that’s the case in 2016. A Lexus is very unlikely to go wrong – and if it does, the dealers will react superbly to fix things.”

Awards,CT 200h,hybrid,RX 200t,RX 350,RX 350h,IS 300h,IS 200t,2014 CT,2016 IS,2016 RX

Third generation RX luxury SUV named the UK’s most reliable car, ahead of the current IS sedan

Lexus GS placed fourth, with NX and CT rounding off the top 10-rated models

Clean sweep in survey’s top three for build quality for NX, and second and third generation RX

Four Lexus models in the top 10 “best cars to own”

Survey based on the real-world experiences of almost 50,000 motorists

London, United Kingdom - Lexus has achieved unprecedented success in Auto Express’s search for the UK’s most reliable cars. The results of the 2016 Driver Power survey see the third generation RX luxury SUV achieving the highest rating, narrowly ahead of the current IS saloon.

A top-three clean-sweep was only prevented by the achievement of the Toyota Land Cruiser in third place, shading out the current Lexus GS saloon. To complete the emphatic performance, the NX crossover and CT premium hatchback rounded off the survey’s top 10 models.

In fact every Lexus model eligible for the survey is featured. The absence of the RC coupe (only recently launched) and the LS limousine is that they have not achieved the sales volumes required for inclusion.

Auto Express declared Lexus has “smashed” the survey, which brings together the real-world experiences and opinions of almost 50,000 motorists. Announcing the results, it said: “A new Lexus RX was launched in 2015, but given the Japanese marque’s formidable performance, who would bet against the new version repeating the success of its predecessor, which tops our reliability chart this year.”

Turning to the IS, it describes how the car “doesn’t take any prisoners when it comes to reliability,” an area where it has “forged a reputation for excellence”. The GS is praised for its “luxuriously appointed and high-spec’ interior” and the NX is recognised for adding excellent reliability to the qualities that it shares with its larger RX sister model.

Ewan Shepherd, Lexus Director, said: “We strive to give our customers complete peace of mind when it comes to being able to rely on their car, day in, day out. Their level of satisfaction is clearly communicated in this extraordinary survey result, vindicating everything we do to deliver the highest quality in all our models.

“It is also significant that their opinions are in the great majority based on their experiences with our hybrid technology, confirming yet again the lasting quality and trustworthy performance of Lexus Hybrid Drive.”

Lexus also performed strongly in other Driver Power categories, notably posting a one-two-three for build quality with the NX and second and third generation RX models. In the “best car to own” results, which take in performance across all survey criteria, Lexus claimed four of the top 10 places with the IS (the top-rated car in 2015) in fourth, GS in fifth, third generation RX in sixth and second generation RX in 10th.

And if you want to know which car has the comfiest seats, the survey reveals that honour, too, goes to the third generation Lexus RX.

tag,Awards,IS 300h,IS 200t,hybrid,RX 200t,RX 350,RX 350h,GS 200t,GS 300h,GS 350,GS 450h,GS F,CT 200h,NX 200t,NX 300h,2016 GS,2016 RX,2014 CT,2015 NX,2016 IS

Brussels, Belgium - Lexus Europe sold 18,058 vehicles in the first three months of 2016, an increase of 16% compared to the first quarter of 2015, in a premium market which increased at a slower pace (+10%).

Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, commented: “The second half of 2015 was marked by an intensive string of new model introductions, including RX, GS F, RC and GS in all European markets as well as LX and ES in the Eastern markets, and we are delighted to see such positive customer response. We are committed to further increase the strength of the Lexus brand in Europe and we look forward to a very successful 2016.”

This quarter marked the start of sales of the all-new, fourth generation RX, which recorded a 114% sales increase over Q1 2015 to reach 4,024 units. Overall, NX remained the best seller among the Lexus range, with 6,315 units sold, sustaining the level of sales reached in Q1 2015 in full launch period.

Also launched in Eastern markets at the end of 2015, the new LX achieved an impressive 165% sales growth to reach 1,456 units, while sales of the revised ES increased by 19% to 475 units.

In total, these models already represented 12% of Lexus sales during the first quarter of 2016, with Russia and Poland being the largest markets.

There was substantial sales growth in all parts of the region managed by Lexus Europe, with increases in excess of 20% in several markets including France, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Israel, Ukraine as well as Russia (+23%) – the latter despite challenging market conditions (premium market down 14% during the quarter).

Sales,NX 200t,NX 300h,hybrid,RX 200t,RX 350,RX 350h,LX 570,LX 450d,ES 350,ES 300h,2015 NX,2016 RX,2016 LX,2015 ES

Brussels, Belgium - MARCH 10 2016 00.01 CET; Today Lexus Europe unveils a new 360-degree video, giving viewers the chance to step inside an immersive show and become an invisible member of the production team. Actor Jude Law acts as a personal guide in the six-minute interactive video journey, which sees the Hollywood star and a team of experts from the world of immersive theatre propel unwitting members of the audience into ‘The Life RX’ – a world of luxury, excitement and thrills, as depicted in the latest TV advert for the new 2016 Lexus RX.

Shot in a disused underground bank vault and London’s Tom Dixon-designed Mondrian hotel, the video lifts the curtain on a one-night-only immersive performance, which took place last month. Captured with over 80 individual cameras, 25 hidden microphones and 3 bespoke car rigs, the video allows viewers to explore how the production was created and experience the glamour for themselves, submerging themselves within the set.

The audience travel through the experience under the guise of attending a traditional car launch, being laser-guided through a series of opening scenes inspired by the bold design of the RX, before being seated in the luxury SUV. As they don an Oculus Rift headset, the concealed crew quickly transforms an empty hangar into a bustling film set, catapulting the unsuspecting guests into the life of a film star.

Encouraged to improvise in their new role, the participants are pursued by eager photographers and journey through the streets of London to arrive in style at their very own red carpet debut. As they emerge into the spotlight, they are greeted by rows of adoring fans, and as they attempt to tackle a press interview, Jude Law himself appears to ask for the return of his Lexus RX keys.

Speaking about the content, Jude Law said: “The 360-degree video provides a glimpse behind the scenes of what was an epic 14 scene production. In immersive theatre, the audience is often left wondering how everything came together and this video lifts the lid on some of that. We worked with a very talented team to create the experience and hope everyone who watches this video has as much fun navigating their way around it as we did putting it on.”

Spiros Fotinos, Head of Marketing at Lexus Europe said: "On Feb 9th, in London, Lexus Europe in collaboration with Jude Law and an A-list team surprised a select group of 100 participants by exposing them to an immersive theatre experience to celebrate the Life RX. Thinking they were attending a conventional press event, the participants were unwittingly transformed into Hollywood superstars and for 50 minutes, live the Life RX. This campaign has been about sharing the amazing experiences that are the Life RX. We’ve been inspired by the pioneering spirit of the Lexus brand to create new ways to tell our story. Whether you look at the bespoke POV camera we created to shoot the TVC, the use of immersive theatre or the sound and lights technology we have used, everything is cutting edge.”

The launch was meticulously produced and directed by an A-list team including the Performance Director behind many Secret Cinema classics, Simon Evans; the Sound and Graphic designer from smash-hit immersive experience Punch Drunk, Stephen Dobbie; ‘The Railway Children’s’ award winning Set and Costume Designer, Joanna Scotcher; Moschino and Beyoncé Lighting Designer, Tupac Martir; the World’s first immersive talent agency The Department, and many of the cast from cult immersive theatre shows such as ‘You Me Bum Bum Train’ and also included a scene with master tailor Joshua Kane.

ABOUT IMMERSIVE THEATRE

In immersive theatre, the lines between performer and audience and between performance and life are blurred. The audience are not passive bystanders and audience members; they are part of the story. However small their role may be, they are placed within in the middle of the action allowing them to individualize their experience based on their reactions and choices and write their own stories.

London, United Kingdom - Last night, Hollywood actor and producer Jude Law starred alongside an elite cast of actors from the world of immersive theatre, in an exclusive interactive show.

The 14-scene odyssey, held at London’s Tom Dixon designed Mondrian hotel and a secret underground bank vault, allowed 100 guests to take centre-stage in the performance and become the star of their very own personalised show. These unwitting participants were catapulted into a live theatrical manifestation of ‘The Life RX’ - a multi-sensorial world of luxury, excitement and thrills, as depicted in the latest TV advert for the new 2016 Lexus RX, which also stars Jude Law.

Each room brought with it new scenarios and unexpected experiences that required guests to improvise in their new persona as an international movie star, whilst the rest of the cast had been fully prepped to work around their specific personalities. The ultimate bespoke performance.

The guests’ new role then took a dramatic turn as award-winning stage and screen legend - and immersive theatre fan - Jude Law surprised them by sharing their ‘red-carpet scene’ finale to the production.

Designed to celebrate the luxury credentials of the new Lexus RX, each carefully crafted scene was inspired by elements of the sharply styled best selling SUV and the extraordinary lifestyle depicted in its TV advert. This creative premise propelled the guests into a multitude of ‘film star’ scenarios, each designed to stimulate the senses in ever more sophisticated ways.

Propelled from one exhilarating scene to the next, en-route guests were laser-guided through underground bank vaults, crawled through giant speakers inspired by Woodstock Sound Engineer, Mark Levinson’s premium acoustics systems, bundled into Lexus RX’s to escape their pursuers, and asked to ride incognito in a customized luxury luggage trolley!

Our stars’ gastronomy skills were tested by a perfectionist, personal chef. Their ‘on-screen presence’ was questioned by cinemas’ media elite. And gaggles of adoring fans threw themselves at our stars during the premier of their very-own movie.

They were even in-demand as fashion muses. Luxury British tailor, Joshua Kane, (playing himself in the production) begged our stars to wear one of his unique creations for the forthcoming awards season. In creating the garment he had used the same expert craftsmanship and hand-stitched techniques seen in the interior of the luxury SUV.

Speaking about the event, Jude Law said: “Immersive theatre is a medium that has interested me for a while now. This is an experience where the audience is in the driving seat, and are taken into an incredibly magical world - having filmed the Life RX ad, being thrust into that world was something I wanted to be a part of. I had a lot of fun and hope everyone who came enjoyed it as much as we did creating it.”

Spiros Fotinos, Head of Marketing at Lexus Europe said: "With ‘The Life RX’ campaign we expressed an attitude that resonates with the modern luxury consumer. Luxury is not only about having the option to do something but actually having the courage to do it and make it your own. This is exactly what we did by staging an unprecedented immersive theatre experience and what we enabled our guests to do. All went through the same 14 scenes but they each experienced something unique and amazing. This bespoke approach reflects the spirit of the Lexus brand and fits perfectly with the bold and innovative character of the new RX."

The event was meticulously produced and directed by an A-list team including the Creative Director of London’s Old Vic Tunnels, Hamish Jenkinson, the Performance Director behind many Secret Cinema classics, Simon Evans, the Sound and Graphic designer from smash-hit immersive experience Punch Drunk, Stephen Dobbie, ‘The Railway Children’s’ award winning Set and Costume Designer, Joanna Scotcher, Moschino and Beyonce Lighting Designer, Tupac Martir and many of the cast from cult immersive theatre shows such as ‘You Me Bum Bum Train’.

I had a lot of fun and hope everyone who came enjoyed it as much as we did creating it.” Spiros Fotinos, Head of Marketing at Lexus Europe said: " https:="" immersive="" including="" innovative="" is="" it="" joanna="" lexus="" life="" lighting="" luxury="" make="" many="" martir="" me="" meticulously="" modern="" moschino="" new="" newsroom:="" night="" not="" of="" off="" old="" on="" one="" only="" option="" our="" own.="" perfectly="" performance="" pictures="" pioneering="" placed="" produced="" punch="" railway="" reflects="" resonates="" s="" same="" scenes="" secret="" set="" shows="" simon="" smash-hit="" something="" sound="" spirit="" staging="" stephen="" such="" t="" team="" that="" the="" theatre="" they="" this="" those="" through="" throughout="" to="" tupac="" tv="" unique="" unprecedented="" using="" v="qF9NTslNGpY" vic="" was="" we="" went="" were="" what="" who="" will="" winning="" with="" www.newsroom.lexus.eu="" www.youtube.com="" you="" your="">

RX 200t,RX 350,RX 450h,hybrid,2016 RX,campaigns

Lexus Europe today announced a creative collaboration with Hollywood actor and producer Jude Law to launch the "The Life RX". The campaign is designed to amplify the brand's spectacular new luxury SUV, the 2016 Lexus RX. It will bring to life a fast paced and exciting lifestyle; one with sophistication and edge in which the driver decides what is possible.

The announcement marks the start of a unique collaboration that will encompass the worlds of luxury, experience and craftsmanship. Jude Law will work with Lexus in a truly integrated fashion, allowing consumers to immerse themselves and be immersed in 'The Life RX' through interactive videography and theatre. He will also star in a TV commercial, shot on the glamorous French Riviera and in the beautiful hills of the Italian Fiuggi region.

The advert, airing from today throughout Europe, depicts a valet who upon being given Law's RX keys, takes a seat in the sharply styled SUV and embarks upon an extraordinary, fast paced and luxurious journey. Filmed from a first person perspective, the audience is catapulted into a fast paced and exciting new world. As our wayward valet returns to the hotel, Law emerges to retrieve his keys and get into his car. He immediately senses something is a little out of the ordinary, and knowingly drives off into the distance leaving the valet who has experienced 'The Life RX' for just a short while behind him.

Speaking about the campaign Jude Law said: "I love driving and the escapism that comes with it. The concept of 'The Life RX' was such an interesting one, as it's true that the right car can give you the keys to an extraordinary experience. The team at Lexus envisioned bringing something to life that was immersive and included everyone on the journey, and this was something I was keen to explore."

Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe said: "We are extremely excited to be partnering with a fantastic actor and true gentleman, Jude Law for 'The Life RX' campaign. 'The Life RX' mirrors the fact that the RX brings a different, rewarding product experience based on a bold design, innovative technologies and above all, a premium luxury feel.
Since the model’s launch in 1998, the Lexus RX has proved immensely popular with those needing the flexibility of a sport-utility vehicle combined with the driving comfort of a premium sedan, all wrapped in an attractive, elegant package. The all-new RX’s mix of sharp creases and curves represents a bold evolution in the model’s styling, sharing the same design DNA with other recently-launched models in the Lexus lineup.

Moreover, this perennial best-selling luxury crossover adds advanced new redesigned hybrid and petrol powertrains, sophisticated safety technologies/driver aids and welcome new convenience and technology features to make this the best Lexus sport-utility vehicle offering to date.

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN

EXTERIOR DESIGN: ELEGANT AND MODERN

WITH EXPRESSIVE, ATHLETIC LINES

From its inception, the Lexus RX has proved popular with those needing the flexibility of a sport-utility vehicle combined with the driving comfort of a luxury sedan, all wrapped in an attractive elegant package. So when it came time to design the new model, the mission was to create an even bolder and more athletic body style than the previous model, while keeping its luxurious character intact, with improved ergonomics. The new RX’s mix of sharp new creases and curves continue to elaborate on the design language also seen in the exterior sheetmetal of other recently-launched models in the Lexus models (IS, NX, and RC in particular).

A powerful visual statement

The front view of the new RX is characterized by an emboldened version of the Lexus brand’s signature spindle grille featuring a chrome-plated border and triple L-shape-LED headlamps. Together with the new front fog light/LED cornering light clusters, the RX’s face exudes an elegant yet futuristic aura.

L-shaped LED headlights accompanied by 18 individual LEDs (upgrade) are available. Headlight designs feature a bold-looking slanted geometric shape. With the upgrade L-shaped LED headlight system, the 18 individual LEDs that surround the headlights not only act as turn signal indicators, but also illuminate sequentially from the inside section of the headlamp toward the outside when the driver activates the turn signal—a first for Lexus. Other available headlight-related technologies include Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), Automatic High Beam, Light Distribution Control and Electronic Swivel Control.

The “spindle” design theme of the front of the RX also defines its rear design, providing a high level of aesthetic balance and consistency to the vehicle’s overall character. The LED rear combination L-shaped taillights envelope the tailgate while wrapping forward around the rear fender sections, resulting in a powerful and wide stance that offers improved functionality: When illuminated, they are now visible over a wider section rearward of the vehicle. Of particular note are the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide a floating-roof effect never before seen on a Lexus product.

Other exterior new features of the RX are flush-fitting headlight washers, a new panoramic moon roof design, solid roof rails, redesigned door handles incorporating Smart Entry System and convenient door handle illumination. Also, three new exterior colours have been added: Graphite Black, Copper Brown and Deep Blue.

Reimagined dimensions in a bold, elegant package

Since owners of the current-generation RX cite the vehicle’s exterior dimensions as ideal for their everyday commuting needs, Lexus designers made it a priority to keep the body size relatively intact while improving packaging. The new RX features exactly the same height (1690 mm for petrol versions, 1685 for RX 450h) as the outgoing vehicle with a slight increase in overall width (up 10 mm to 1895 mm), while overall length has grown by 120 mm to 4890 mm. Wheelbase is increased by 50 mm to 2790 mm, resulting in improved legroom with equal cargo space. Of note, ground clearance is up 10 mm despite the similar height of the previous model.

Adding some muscular athleticism to the RX’s overall stance are the aggressively shaped tapered front and rear fender flares, while the diamond-shaped main body that flows from the spindle grille all the way through to the rear tailgate section imparts a high degree of sophistication. The sculpted beltline provides a three-dimensional effect as it makes its way down the sides of the vehicle from just above the rear taillights, passing through the side door/window section and gently bisecting the headlights and spindle grille, to create a sense of dynamic motion for the RX even when standing still.

Accompanying the new-look exterior design are a number of re-proportioned changes to the exterior structure, including the enlargement of the tyre and wheel diameters, a longer wheelbase and a slightly lowered bottom edge of the front bumper. Additionally, the front pillars (A-pillars) have been pushed back to further accentuate the curvature of the windshield, while the rear pillars (C-pillars) are now more acutely angled while ensuring more interior space. These exterior design features give the new RX a wider, more athletic and expressive stance that contributes to the model’s more contemporary appearance.

Improved aerodynamics: Cheating the wind

A number of aerodynamic elements have been incorporated into the new RX’s outer skin. These aerodynamic enhancements not only improve the vehicle’s drag coefficient (now at 0.33) but also ensure a greater degree of driving stability and low cabin noise.

Among these enhancements are:

• A front under spoiler has been added that directs airflow to the underbody, ensuring driving stability as well as reducing aerodynamic drag.

• New fin-shaped corner sections in the front fascia beneath the headlights improve airflow along the sides of the vehicle.

• The front pillars (A-pillars) have been redesigned to reduce wind noise during high-speed driving.

• New aero stabilizing fins have been added to the taillight’s housing. They wrap into the rear fenders for additional aerodynamic stability at the rear of the vehicle.

• A new rear spoiler design along the roof/tailgate glass section helps reduce lift and adds rear downforce.

• On the hybrid model, the rear diffuser beneath the rear bumper helps to smoothly draw airflow from beneath the vehicle for reduced aerodynamic drag and additional driving stability.

A wide selection of sporty wheels provides added flair

A choice of four different stylish aluminum wheel packages are now available with the RX, including an 18-in. seven-spoke wheel (standard model) and three distinct 20-in. wheel sets.

Choices include:

• A pair of ten-spoke wheels with a medium gray colour with a machined finish.

• Sporty multi-spoke design that is standard equipment on the RX F SPORT.

• And a sleek-looking thick five-spoke rendition that is available with selectable colour trim (choices include black, copper brown, sonic titanium or sonic white)- a Lexus first.

INTERIOR: LUXURIOUS YET PRACTICAL WHILE OFFERING SPACIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS

Like the exterior, the interior of the new RX reflects an impeccable balance of functionality and luxury. The occupants are surrounded by refined materials inside the cabin exuding a heightened sense of quality in their construction and craftsmanship. The newly reconfigured and redesigned interior balances a sense of spaciousness with intimacy that proves ideal for driver and passenger comfort alike, whether they’re seated in the first or second row.

A rich comfortable cabin

Having been a signature design trait for Lexus since the very beginning, the seats in the new RX are based on an ergonomic design that puts equal emphasis on comfort and accessibility, elegance and richly appointed surfaces. Rounded seat cushions for all the RX occupants not only provide superb comfort, but excellent support. All seating surfaces have been constructed utilizing a vertical stitch pattern for its handsome look and excellent durability. In another stylish touch, the driver and front passenger seat backs feature an aesthetically pleasing quilting that matches the attractive pattern featured on the interior door panel trim.

Two new colours have been added for the leather surfaces that include the seats and door panels - Nobel Brown and Rich Cream- giving the interior a classy aura.

The driver is treated to a completely redesigned instrument panel section that has been shaped with a strong horizontal axis - a fundamental element of the Lexus interior - and the lowered dashboard position adds to the RX’s interior’s wide open and spacious feel. Additionally, with the dashboard/instrument panel’s stepped cross-sections, the highly stylized centre console looks like a sleek and elegant piece of contemporary furniture.

More space all around

For the first row of seats, the seating position has been lowered (reduced by 19 mm), allowing for excellent head clearance for both the driver and the front passenger. On the driver’s side, the position of the steering wheel has been repositioned with the angle of the steering column reduced by two degrees while the steering wheel has been positioned closer to the driver. This design change allows for a comfortable yet more sport-oriented driving position - an attribute that will surely be greatly appreciated by the enthusiast driver.

With an interior space optimized for five passengers, the new RX’s lowered rear floor section helps provide seating position comparable to that of the rear-seat passengers in the flagship Lexus LS sedan. Rear-seat occupants will find that they still have plenty of head room, as they did in the previous-generation model. What’s more, thanks to the new RX’s lengthened wheelbase, rear-seat legroom has grown with no sacrifice to luggage space.

Comparable in size to the outgoing RX, the new model features ample rear cargo space with room enough to fit hefty items including up to four large suitcases or multiple golf bags. Beneath the rear cargo area floor is a spare tyre with jack and tool storage or a punctured tyre repair kit and jack and tool storage.

New for this model year is the smart power tailgate, a Lexus first, which allows users to open the rear hatch by placing a hand near the Lexus badge. This feature can especially be helpful when the user has both hands full because the system detects an elbow and even a gloved hand when placed over the badge.

A highly functional and convenient environment

Lexus designers and engineers have given a great deal of consideration to the layout of the redesigned centre console of the RX, which has led to improvements in the usability of switchgear and the accessibility of cup holders and storage areas.

CENTRE CONSOLE:

On the centre console, both the audio and climate control sections have been clearly separated for ease of use. What’s more, the audio system features exquisitely machined aluminum dial knobs that improve usability and tactile feel while looking extremely stylish.

New convenience features incorporated into the centre console section include a Micro SD card slot for enhanced functionality of external media; a convenient side console pocket accessible from the passenger seat that is capable of holding tablets and other small computer devices; an available wireless charger in the storage section at the base of the centre console that enables power cable-free charging of portable devices; and the world’s first cup holder with a vertical sliding height adjustment mechanism that can be adjusted with the push of a button to accept tall plastic bottles, short to-go coffee cups, aluminum soda cans, etc.

Even the analogue clock located near the top of the centre console reflects the RX’s stylish redesigned interior while offering excellent functionality. Looking like a timepiece created by a high-end watchmaker, the design of the clock face has been improved to offer better visibility for the driver and the passengers.

HEAD- UP DISPLAY (HUD) AND 12.3” MONITOR:

A feature incorporated into the design of the new-look instrument panel is a Head-Up Display (HUD) system, the large display screen placed on the windshield with the system’s operational controls conveniently positioned between the two front seats to allow for equal access by the driver or the front passenger. Based upon the concept of Lexus’s Human Machine Interface (HMI), the system allows the driver to concentrate on the road ahead with minimal distraction from the easy-to-use and intuitive control interface. Also, a full 12.3 inches in width dashboard mounted monitor (8-in. display as alternative) offers outstanding visibility and usability, whether scrolling through menu screens, utilizing maps or accessing the vehicle’s multimedia systems.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER:

Speaking of excellent functionality, the redesigned instrument cluster offers the driver instantaneous information with a quick glance from its large and easy-to-read gauge faces. The same can be said of the handy multi-information display positioned between the tachometer (an energy display gauge in hybrid-powered RX models) and the speedometer. What’s more, the ambient illumination of the multi-information display changes to invoke a different mood for each mode from the Driver Mode Select system - when operating within the ECO or NORMAL driving modes, the illumination appears predominantly blue to let the driver know that they are driving in more economical settings while in SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes, the light glows red.

IMPROVED VISIBILITY:

An important new design feature is an expanded front field of view through the windshield and out over the hood. This not only allows for increased safety with improved forward visibility when driving, but provides the driver with a more precise estimation of vehicle width, which can be especially handy when parking the vehicle or manoeuvring through tight spaces. Another design change that further improves outward vision is the placement of the side view mirrors, which have been moved slightly aft from their previous position near the A-pillars to help reduce the blind spot between the pillar and the outside mirror. Furthermore, the A-pillars are thinner to further enhance forward vision and providing a cleaner, more minimalist appearance to both the interior and exterior design.

Like the A-pillars at the front of the vehicle, the rear pillars (C-pillars) are also narrower, resulting in better rearward visibility as well as a reduction in the rear three-quarter blind spot. To further aid rearward visibility, the rear seat belt openings have been repositioned and the rear door trim has been given a concave cross-section to be less intrusive to the driver when looking rearward.

RX F SPORT

The RX F SPORT elevates the sporty image of the RX to an entirely new level. F SPORT models include a number of special visual and performance features that set them apart from other versions. The first thing the driver will notice is the exclusive instrumentation cluster that consists of an 8-in. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) characterized by a large, easy-to-read circular gauge that artistically combines a tachometer and a digital speed indicator.

The interior of the RX F SPORT has been styled to match the vehicle’s sporty disposition. You’ll find highly supportive quilted seats that are exclusive to the F SPORT, as is an exclusive interior colour choice, Dark Rose. The unique perforated leather-wrapped shift lever and three-spoke sport steering wheel with F SPORT badge, and aluminum interior trim accents, drilled non-slip lightweight aluminum accelerator and brake pedals and foot rest add extra flair to this exciting model’s invigorating character.

The exterior features an exclusive black-out mesh grille, lower spoiler section and satin-finish chrome-plated lower protector with black side mirrors to match the grille. The vehicle’s new front fascia design accentuates a low centre of gravity, as does the new satin-finish chrome plated lower bumper section at the rear of the vehicle. Exclusive multi-spoke 20-in. aluminum alloy wheels shod with 235/55 tyres and subtle but distinctive F SPORT badging round out its expressive exterior. A total of eight exterior colours are available, including an F SPORT exclusive, White Nova.

3.5-LITER DIRECT-INJECTED V-6 HYBRID ENGINE

A paragon of efficiency with plentiful power when needed, the completely reengineered 3.5-liter direct-injected V-6 hybrid engine is an evolution of the base 6-cylinder powertrain, now producing 193 kW/262 DIN hp at 6000 rpm with 335 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm. The total output of the hybrid powertrain (engine and electric motor combined) amounts at 230 kW/313 DIN hp.

The new Lexus full hybrid returns average fuel consumption from 5.2l/100 km, and class-leading CO2 emissions starting at 120g/km.

In a Lexus first for a hybrid vehicle, the all-new RX is available with an optimally-tuned sound generator system that creates a powerful and distinctive performance-oriented intake sound by using air intake pulsations to raise the sound pressure level with three distinct resonance frequencies. The engine also features newly-shaped intake ports and combustion chambers that generate a high degree of tumble inside the cylinders and improve combustion. The hybrid-powered powertrain in the all-new Lexus RX is the latest, most advanced iteration of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system. Its key components and control systems have been improved and reengineered to deliver class-leading fuel economy, minimal emissions and excellent on-road.

The transmission includes a hybrid front transaxle with new features including a transmission oil cooler (water cooled) for improved motor cooling, and a pre-loaded differential for performance and straight line stability. The rear transaxle (for models equipped with AWD), which combines an electric motor with a reduction drive, features a new three-shaft configuration and aluminum case and cover to reduce weight. Thanks to these upgrades, the Lexus Hybrid Drive system achieves class-leading driving performance, quietness and fuel economy.

Among other updates to the system are a design evolution of the Power Control Unit (PCU) and HV Engine Control Unit (ECU) that delivers better energy efficiency; improved driver-friendly operation and more refined performance; implementation of a lighter, more efficient hybrid system coolant electric water pump; the addition of a new transmission oil cooler (water cooled) to the transaxle for improved driving performance, and packaging changes to the hybrid battery that result in a more compact design with improved space efficiency. Also, the control functions of the E-Four rear drive electric motor (AWD models) have been improved for better response when accelerating through the turns.

2.0-LITER TURBOCHARGED INLINE 4-CYLINDER ENGINE

The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 is the newest addition to the RX’s stable of excellent powerplants, delivering superior fuel economy and driving performance, characterized by crisp throttle response and instantaneous torque throughout the rev range.

The engine produces 175 kW (238 DIN hp) at 4800-5600 rpm with 350 Nm of torque from 1650-4000 rpm. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7.8L/100km (2WD) or 7.9L/100km (AWD).

It comes mated to a 6-speed super Electronically Controlled Transaxle (6 ECT) automatic transmission, a lightweight and compact unit whose efficiency and performance have been enhanced through a number of design features including a reduced-friction clutch and thrust bearings, an electric oil pump and the implementation of a torque converter specifically engineered for use with this engine.

Among the special features of the RX’s new turbocharged powerplant are Lexus’ proprietary ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) and D-4ST (Direct injection 4-stroke petrol engine Superior version with Turbo), which optimize fuel efficiency and power production. With ESTEC, thermal efficiency within the engine is improved through enhanced combustion in each cylinder, resulting in better fuel economy. D-4ST further enhances combustion via a high tumble ratio that’s achieved by improving the cylinder head ports as well as the shape of the top of the piston. The turbocharger, a twin-scroll type with an air-to-liquid intercooler mounted directly to the engine, delivers optimal torque from low to high rpm ranges, and thanks to new manufacturing technologies and materials, it’s lighter and more compact than conventional versions. Also, reduced friction in the bearing mechanism delivers better overall performance, reduced NVH and cleaner emissions, with increased component strength and durability.

Other notable elements that enhance this engine’s efficiency include a high compression ratio of 10.0:1, balance shaft with an optimized balance ratio and the adoption of resin gears for the balance shaft (reduced NVH), an improved lightweight roller/rocker valvetrain, a piston cooling oil jet control system, as well as Variable Valve Timing with intelligence Wide for the intake (VVT-iW) and Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) on the exhaust sides of the engine. Of particular note, the continuously variable valve timing system has been designed to operate using the Atkinson cycle - a design element often featured in hybrid-vehicle powertrains - to deliver exceptional fuel efficiency.

3.5-LITER DIRECT-INJECTED V-6 PETROL ENGINE

The 3.5-liter direct-injected petrol-powered V-6 engine brings superior levels of performance, fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with smooth and highly-refined operating characteristics in normal everyday operation. Power is rated at 221 kW/300 DIN hp at 6300 rpm with 370 Nm of torque at 4700 rpm.

To enhance breathing and fuel efficiency, Lexus engineers rely on an all-new cylinder head design with reshaped intake ports and combustion chambers—which increase the static compression ratio to 11.8:1 –for added efficiency in the engine’s combustion process. Also, a new cylinder bore machining method and new resin coating has resulted in reduced friction between the piston and the bore to enhance the engine’s efficiency.

This redesigned V-6 powerplant features the D-4S fuel injection system that enables high fuel pressure to be injected directly to the cylinders. Both the port-injection and direct-injection injectors optimize the ratio of the fuel to ensure optimum combustion at all times, which results in enhanced fuel economy. To reduce engine knock, the cooling within the cylinder block and cylinder head has been enhanced.

To maximize torque throughout the rev range, Variable Valve Timing with intelligence Wide (VVT-iW) has been included on the intake side, while the exhaust side features VVT-i. The inclusion of VVT-iW has enabled the adoption of the Atkinson cycle to further benefit fuel economy, without sacrificing engine start-up in extremely cold conditions and during Wide Open Throttle (WOT) driving.

The V-6 possesses a number of new technologies that result in the highest-performing RX engine ever. Among them are:

• An increase in flow velocity, which has been realized by reducing the intake port diameter of the cylinder head, thus improving performance in the high rev ranges and producing a steep and continuous acceleration curve.

• The fitment of a lightweight roller/rocker system, along with a reduced-friction chain and lighter internal parts that result in higher engine speeds and reduction of friction losses in the valvetrain.

• An Exhaust Gas Recirculation System (EGR) that reintroduces cool exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber, keeping the engine operating at optimal temperatures.

• A variable length intake surge tank that prevents torque reduction in the mid-speed range.

• A new oil pump that optimizes the amount of lubricating oil sent to each part.

The V-6’s excellent power is delivered through a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, whose close gear ratios have been tuned to provide excellent punch off the line and robust passing power while maintaining excellent fuel economy. A lower 1st gear (a 19-percent lower ratio than 2nd gear) provides the “punch” when you need to get away from a standstill in a hurry, while a higher 8th gear (a 15-percent higher ratio than 7th gear) ensures that fuel consumption is minimal at cruising speed.

Other advanced technologies that enhance this unit’s operation are Linear Driveforce Management (maximizes engine torque for each gear), Downshift Control (matches the driver’s accelerator pedal input - smooth or rapid - with the downshifting response accordingly) and a Multi-mode function that allows for rapid manual-like up and downshifts via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

AWD SYSTEMS

For petrol AWD models, Dynamic Torque Control AWD has been adopted, which processes information from a number of sensors, including G. wheel-speed sensors and steering angle sensors, and instantaneously route engine power to the rear wheels to maximize tractability on varying surfaces and road conditions. The torque distribution ranges from 100:0 (pure front-wheel drive) to 50:50 via an electronically-controlled coupling, ensuring the effectiveness of a full-time AWD system, while delivering superior fuel economy.

The sophisticated Lexus proactive AWD system is included in all RXs powered by the 3.5-liter direct-injected gasoline-powered V-6 hybrid engine. This system also allows for reduced energy and fuel consumption by limiting the use of the all-wheel drive only when necessary and allowing the rear motor to act as a generator to charge the battery when the vehicle is in regenerative brake mode.

An added feature on the new RX is that the torque distribution levels at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as to each individual wheel, are displayed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) when the system is in operation a Lexus first on RX vehicles.

CHASSIS AND DRIVING DYNAMICS

To further improve driving performance as well as feedback to the driver, a number of updates and improvements have been made throughout the structurally sound and highly-refined platform of the all-new Lexus RX.

STEERING

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) has been further optimized to offer an even more communicative road feel to the driver. The intermediate shaft and instrument panel reinforcement rigidity have been enhanced. Controllability, smoothness and responsiveness have been improved thanks to further refinements to the system, including one that slows the steering wheel as it returns to centre. Also, steering angle is easier for the driver to maintain when turning deep into a corner.

The steering has been further optimized for the driver with an extended tilt/telescopic positioning range, along with a slight reduction in the angle of the steering column (down two degrees) for a sportier driving position.

SUSPENSION/BRAKES

The updated suspension system of the RX, which consists of MacPherson struts in front and a trailing arm/double-wishbone setup at the rear, provides added stability through corners and better overall handling character than its predecessor, thanks to extra refinements made with a number of key components.

A larger front stabilizer bar significantly improves roll rigidity, thus making the turning response of the RX crisper than before, but because the new stabilizer bar allows for a reduction in coil spring rates, the overall ride quality has been maintained, if not improved. Also, new redesigned hub bearings, stabilizer bushings and other improvements provide added stability and feel to the front of the vehicle. To match the front end’s newfound sturdiness, changes were made to the rear suspension as well; these include an enhanced spring rate and increased bushing rigidity.

RX models are fitted with an enhanced brake system that offers exceptional stopping power and fade resistance. An Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is included as part of the standard equipment package.

ADAPTIVE VARIABLE SUSPENSION (AVS)

The available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system helps the RX to handle like a sports sedan, as well as exhibiting unparalleled ride comfort and stability, by controlling the damping force of the shock absorbers at each individual wheel in response to road surface conditions and driver inputs. For example, on a rough road, the system instantly switches to a more compliant setting to maintain ride comfort. Alternately, when cornering, the damping force firms to help reduce body roll for more performance-oriented, flat cornering.

ACTIVE STABILIZER SUSPENSION

The Active Stabilizer Suspension suppresses body roll according to unevenness of the road surface, performing the adjustments not only during turning, but also when traveling straight. This innovative active anti-roll system is the first of its kind in the world.

Conventional stabilizers are still vulnerable to unpredictable road conditions such as large potholes and sudden bumps. To help maintaining the effectiveness of the stabilising system at any time, the RX’s system features a new ‘roll skyhook control’. This very responsive electronic system calculates the virtual damping force that might occur, and responds by simultaneously creating a counter force to the stabilizer, providing the sensation of the vehicle stabilized in mid-air or ‘hooked’ in the sky.

DRIVE MODES

The available Drive Mode Select system allows the driver to choose between distinct drive settings (depending upon vehicle model and equipment). These settings regulate the damping force of the suspension system, adjust engine output, re-map the throttle and modify other key parameters of the engine and chassis.

• “ECO” mode moderates engine power output, throttle response and the climate control system for increased fuel efficiency.

• “NORMAL” provides an even balance between engine performance and fuel economy (both “ECO” and “NORMAL” utilize a suspension setting that prioritizes comfort).

• In “SPORT,” the driver is treated to more performance through enhanced throttle response and improved acceleration while sharpening the feel of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

For vehicles equipped with the Adaptive Variable Suspension system, this SPORT mode is replaced by the SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes:

• The “SPORT S” setting even a higher level of performance with aggressive throttle mapping, quicker powertrain response. (In hybrid-powered RX models with AVS, this is accomplished when the hybrid system allows for enhanced accelerator response and feeling of more powerful acceleration.)

• Available on F SPORT and Luxury grades, the all-out “SPORT S+” setting combines the powertrain enhancements of the “SPORT S” mode while sharpening the feel of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system and a stiffer suspension for flatter cornering.

• Offered for the first time by Lexus, the “CUSTOMIZE” mode enables the user to combine the modes of the engine, hybrid system, chassis, and air conditioning functions, according to his preferences.

The hybrid RX also adds an “EV DRIVE” setting that allows the vehicle to be driven purely in electric vehicle (EV) mode, completely shutting down the petrol-powered engine.

RIGID BODY STRUCTURE

A number of cutting-edge technologies have been applied to the RX’s platform to optimize structural integrity as well as overall rigidity. These include increasing panel joint strength through the use of high-tech body adhesives and laser screw welding; liberal use of high-tensile strength steel throughout the vehicle including key areas such as the underbody cross members and front (A-pillar) and middle (B-pillar) sections; the implementation of a new process called “annular frame construction” for strengthened frame sections within the vehicle around the front and rear doors; and redesigned body frame sections and additional spot welds around the rear portion of the vehicle for improved strength and handling stability.

In addition to contributing to better handling and a quieter cabin, these design updates have the added benefit of improving occupant safety thanks to increased structural rigidity throughout the platform.

QUIET CABIN WITH GREATLY REDUCED LEVELS

OF NOISE AND VIBRATION

The high-rigidity chassis/body structure of the all-new Lexus RX features a number of design/engineering updates that improve upon the already exceptionally quiet cabin of the previous RX. Among the changes are:

Front section of the vehicle:

• A reduction in wind noise near the front pillar (A-pillar) by redirecting the air flow around the side mirrors.

• A urethane shielding plate placed within the inner fender area that reduces engine noise from penetrating into the cabin.

• New front wheel housing material for reduced noise from the road and deflected debris.

• A thicker hood insulator offering better sound insulation.

• An increase in the surface area of the cowl insulator.

• Enlarge the apron silencer by 10 to 20% to reduce engine noise from entering the passenger compartment.

• Reduce openings in the sound insulating material in the cowl area for better sound absorption and insulation.

Middle section of the vehicle:

• Acoustic glass, three-lip glass run in the rail section and other improvements to the front and rear doors for better sound insulation and reduced noise and vibration.

• More optimally placed and/or positioned foam, sponge and vibration damping materials around the front and rear door section rocker panels, middle pillar (B-pillar) and roof rails sections.

• Reconfigured weather stripping around the front and rear doors, along with full-edge double door seals.

• Optimal placement of sound absorbing and insulating materials throughout the doors, roof and floor sections.

• Highly rigid sound damping coatings throughout the vehicle’s floor pan for improved sound insulation with reduced weight.

• Placement of sound absorbing materials beneath the dashboard, glovebox and centre console sections.

Rear section of the vehicle:

• A completely redesigned and repositioned rear body frame within the rear pillar (C-pillar) and body sections surrounding the rear hatchback door area that greatly suppress lateral vibrations from within the rear wheel housings.

• Additional foam placed within the rear pillar (C-pillar) area for reduced wind noise.

IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

In addition to its exceptional quality and performance, the platform of the RX has been engineered to proactively contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability, thanks to lead- and hexavalent chromium-free engine components (elimination of harmful materials) and the utilization of easily recyclable Super Olefin Polymer plastics throughout the bodywork.

RX F SPORT

All RX F SPORT models boast excellent handling, thanks in part to the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system - which controls the damping force of the shock absorbers at each individual wheel in response to road surface conditions and driver inputs - and the Active Stabilizer System that suppresses body roll according to the unevenness of the road surface. Also, the sound generator enhances the F SPORT driving experience, using air intake pulsations to tune the sound of the engine to produce frequencies that are perceived to be pleasant to the ear during acceleration in the mid- to high-rpm range.

SAFETY & DRIVER ASSIST

ACTIVE SAFETY: LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

Introduced globally as either standard or optional equipment, Lexus Safety System + integrates several of Lexus’ existing active safety technologies.

Lexus Safety System + is the most advanced and comprehensive set of active safety set of its kind available on any luxury crossover vehicle within its segment. The ultimate goal of the Lexus Safety System + is to gradually progress towards eliminating casualties from automobile accidents.

Dynamic radar cruise control system

The sophisticated dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC) system is an available supplemental safety/convenience feature in addition to the standard control system. It makes use of a millimetre-wave radar sensor, camera sensor, yaw rate sensor and steering sensor to provide vehicle-to-vehicle distance control for an additional margin of safety.

Pre-Crash Safety System

Utilizing both a monocular camera and millimetre wave radar, the available Lexus Pre-Crash Safety System uses sensors to detect other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle. When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is high, a warning operates to urge the driver to take evasive action, and the potential brake pressure is increased to help the driver avoiding the collision. If the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a vehicle or a pedestrian is high, the brakes are automatically applied to help avoiding the collision or help reduce the impact to the vehicle occupants and the vehicle in the collision.

Pre-Crash Brake Assist

If sensors detect vehicles or pedestrians and the system determines that there is a possibility of a collision, the available Pre-Crash Brake Assist system increases the brake force when the driver depresses the brake pedal. The system will add an additional amount of brake pressure in stages according to the level of possible collision.

An additional layer of protection is provided within the system through Auto Brake. If an obstruction is detected by the sensors and the system judges that there is a possibility of collision, pre-brake warning illuminates the brake lights to notify the following vehicle that the driver is decelerating. If the probability of collision increases, the pre-crash brake is activated, helping to avoid the collision. If the collision is avoided and the vehicle has stopped, the brake force is maintained for a maximum of two seconds until the driver operates the accelerator or brake pedal.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

The available Lane Departure Alert (LDA) system, using a camera mounted to the windshield, recognizes when the vehicle may deviate from within its current traffic lane. It then warns the driver through a visual warning on the Multi-Information Display (MID) by vibrating the steering wheel or sounding an audible alert in order to inform the driver of a potential lane departure. What’s more, when the system judges that the vehicle may deviate from its current lane, the Steering Control system will also apply force to the steering wheel to correct the vehicle’s path in addition to the LDA system’s audio/visual warning.

A convenient feature is that the alerting method (audible alert or steering wheel vibration) and sensitivity of the warning can be changed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) screen by using the “DISP” button located on the steering wheel. Likewise, the driver may activate or deactivate the Steering Control functionality should they choose to do so.

Advanced Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA) *

The advanced Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA) system adds all of the functionality of the Lane Departure Alert system while including additional functionality and aid to the driver. For example, when the vehicle’s dynamic radar cruise control is on and other operating conditions are met, the advanced Lane-Keeping Assist system will automatically provide steering inputs to maintain proper placement within the vehicle’s current driving lane.

In a first for Lexus, the advanced Lane-Keeping Assist system, working in tandem with the dynamic radar cruise control, can now function while the vehicle is being operated at very low speeds. Like the Lane Departure Alert system, the driver has complete control over the functionality of the advanced Lane-Keeping Assist system through the use of the “DISP” button located on the steering wheel.

Automatic High Beam (AHB) / Adaptive High-Beam System (AHS)

The AHB system detects oncoming headlights, taillights of leading vehicles and ambient light such as street lights and switches automatically between low and high beam.

AHS, an optional upgrade for the AHB, automatically optimizes the headlamp light distribution so that the high beams don’t directly illuminate preceding or oncoming vehicles.

Road Sign Assist

With a camera placed at the front of the vehicle, the remarkably sophisticated Road Sign Assist system recognizes traffic signs and provides information to the driver in the Multi-Information Display (MID). Signs recognized by the system include speed limit, no entry, no overtaking and road condition signs (rain, ice, wet, etc.).

OTHER ACTIVE SAFETY-ENHANCING FEATURES:

Sway Warning

The Sway Warning function incorporated into the LDA/LKA monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane and the driver’s steering inputs to detect vehicle sway. If the system detects vehicle sway, caused by driver distraction, inattentiveness or drowsiness, it will sound an audible alert and display a visual warning on the Multi-Information Display (MID). Sway Warning activation, deactivation and sensitivity can be manually adjusted by the driver.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

Working in concert with the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), the Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system alerts the driver to objects approaching at the rear of the vehicle with an audible alert as well as flashing indicators on the vehicle’s external side mirrors.

Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)

Employing quasi-millimetre wave radar installed on the back of the vehicle, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system can detect a vehicle present in adjacent lanes and can also detect an object at the rear of the vehicle while it is backing up.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) control

When sensors detect vehicles or pedestrians and the system determines that there is a high likelihood of a collision, the Adaptive Variable Suspension Control system instantaneously adjusts shock absorber damping within the suspension to enhance the vehicle’s responsiveness as an additional driver aid (available on vehicles equipped with AVS).

Panoramic View Monitor

Providing a bird’s-eye view of the area encompassing the vehicle, the Panoramic View Monitor allows the driver to survey the RX’s surroundings in tight spaces, such as a crowded parking lot, by utilizing cameras mounted to the front, sides and rear of the RX.

Intuitive Parking Assist/Lexus Parking Assist-sensor

Integrated seamlessly into the front and rear bumpers of the all-new Lexus RX, the available Intuitive Parking Assist/Lexus Parking Assist-sensor system ensures obstacle detection in close proximity to the vehicle, thanks to four sensors at the front and four sensors in the rear. The system sounds an audible alert to the driver as the vehicle moves closer to the obstacle.

Parking Assist Monitor

The Parking Assist Monitor aids the driver with both a Perpendicular Parking Mode as well as a Parallel Parking Mode that displays guidelines for a predicted course to steer the vehicle; the Parallel Parking Mode offers additional driver’s assistance through an audio warning.

PASSIVE SAFETY

A plethora of vital safety features and technologies are included for all RX models, including SRS airbags consisting of dual-stage and dual-chamber driver’s and front passenger’s airbag, driver’s knee airbag, front side airbags, rear side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers; Tyre Pressure Warning System with available tyre inflation display function; re- active front headrests; vehicle theft-deterrent and engine immobilizer system. Braking and Traction Control systems that include four-wheel ventilated power-assisted disc brakes, a four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRAC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill-start Assist Control are also included, as is Smart Stop Technology that automatically reduces engine power when the brake pedal is applied, even if the accelerator pedal is pressed to the floor.

Enhanced body structure

The body structure of the RX offers increased occupant protection thanks to a number of innovative design features that include improved front collision performance due to new frame components and a high-strength body structure that further suppresses cabin deformation; better side collision performance thanks to improved energy absorption and dispersion; a large bumper reinforcement at the rear of the vehicle that disperses energy in the event of a collision towards the left and right rear side members; and additional reinforcements within the roof section for better impact resistance and suppression of cabin deformation. Pedestrian protection is improved in the event of a collision through a new body structure design at the front of the vehicle that mitigates head and leg injury to the pedestrian through better energy absorption.

AUDIO/MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS

PIONEER 9-SPEAKER SYSTEM

The standard audio system includes HD Radio, Bluetooth audio and nine speakers, with frequently-used switches placed closest to the driver. Along with a pair of two-tone alumite silver aluminum knobs, the audio system panel is now finished in a luxurious dark smoked colour, its opacity adjusted for an upscale blacked-out aesthetic. An AUX mini jack and two USB ports are located inside the console box for easy access. The voice recognition microphone has been relocated from the overhead console to the ceiling above the driver seat for improved voice-recognition performance.

PIONEER 12-SPEAKER SYSTEM

The available 12-speaker Pioneer audio system features Coherent Source Transducer (CST) technology that offers extremely realistic and high quality sound reproduction in the mid-to-high range as well as boosting low tones. The crisp, clear sound is broadcast throughout the cabin through speakers along the sides of the instrument panel through 20-cm subwoofers and newly-developed 18-cm woofers in the front doors.

MARK LEVINSON (ML) PREMIUM SURROUND SYSTEM

Discerning audiophiles will enjoy the available 15-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround System (ML) with its advanced Clari-Fi compressed music restoration technology, that improves the frequency characteristics, dynamic range, low tone tension and detail reproduction of compressed audio sources as MP3. The ML system also features Green Edge technology which uses ultra-high-efficiency speakers to more than double the sound output with the same amount of energy consumption compared to conventional systems-and the Unity feature that brings the high range and mid-range cone positions as close together as possible to realize a smooth connections between mid- and high-range sounds.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM

A navigation system with an 8-in. Thin Film Transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display is available that features a high level of contrasting clarity as well as minimal colour variation when viewed at different angles from either the driver or the front passenger seat. To suit a range of user preferences, this system’s information screen can be set to display a one-panel (full map view), two-panel (half map/half info screen) or a three-panel layout (map/two different info screens). In the multi-panel layout, the screens can be set to display information including navigation, fuel consumption, audio system and air conditioning settings.

The optional 12.3-in. navigation system with Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display (1280 x 480 pixels with a 24:9 aspect ratio) features a large Thin Film Transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display that, in addition to its vibrant and crisp-looking graphics, offers remarkable brightness/sharpness/contrast whenexposed to direct sunlight thanks to its Light Control Film surface treatment that possesses excellent anti-glare properties while simultaneously suppressing any background reflections.

The 12.3-in. display navigation system utilizes a new and improved Lexus Multimedia graphic design that offers new-look graphics as well as a new user interface that can be switched between either a full-screen or 8-in. display map view that incorporates five frequently used functions within a convenient sub-screen (map, audio, phone, aircon, Eco.).

2016 RX,RX,2016

Maximum 5-star rating achieved by the new Lexus RX

Best pedestrian protection score ever-achieved by a large SUV

Lexus Safety System+ offers as standard equipment all safety assist features tested by Euro NCAP

</pp:summary>

The Lexus RX has been awarded the prestigious Euro NCAP five-star rating. The scores for all the respective tested areas were well above the minimum required to achieve five stars, and rank the new Lexus as one of the very safest vehicles in its segment.

The Lexus RX scored 91% for "Adult Occupant", 82% for "Child Occupant", 79% for "Pedestrian Protection" and 77% for "Safety Assist".

With an overall score of 79%, the RX has the best pedestrian protection score of all large SUVs ever tested by Euro NCAP.

Commenting on the Pedestrian Protection category, Euro NCAP highlighted the maximum points scored by the RX for the protection provided to pedestrian's legs and to the pelvic region, head protection was also predominantly good. In this particular field, Lexus is even ahead of the curve as the autonomous emergency braking system offered on all RX actively detects pedestrians. This system could not be rewarded in this evaluation as it will only be assessed by Euro NCAP as from 2016.

Euro NCAP also underlined that all features evaluated for "Safety Assist" are offered as standard equipment in the RX.

The RX is indeed providing as standard the most advanced and comprehensive set of active safety features on any premium crossover, the Lexus Safety System+ includes:

Pre-Crash System that uses a front-mounted camera and millimetre-wave radar to detect vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead.

Adaptive Cruise Control, which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, even at very low speeds.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA), which recognise when the new RX is deviating from its lane on the highway and help the driver steer the vehicle safely back to its correct path.

Automatic High Beam, which detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead and automatically switches the headlights between high and low beam.

The Road Sign Assist system that uses a front camera to recognise principal warning and command signs, which are then replicated on the multi-information display, reducing the risk of the driver not being aware speed limits, lane closures and other important information.

Even though not considered by Euro NCAP, Lexus RX is further equipped with optional Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Sway Warning which detects the signs of driver drowsiness and 360° Panoramic View Monitor dedicated to protecting its occupants and pedestrians.

Advanced suspension technology and new Roll Skyhook Control give the new RX improved ride and handling

Retuned suspension with optional Adaptive Variable Suspension increase comfort and driver rewards

New construction techniques deliver increased body rigidity

</pp:summary>

There is no question that rock'n'roll is great music, but the term means something much less fun when used to describe the quality of ride you get from your car. Lexus has designed and equipped its new RX to put an end to rocking and rolling, whether you are travelling on the highway, or driving on rougher off-road surfaces.

The new luxury SUV offers Roll Skyhook Control, a system that takes active suspension performance to a higher level, securing a smoother and more stable ride and a more rewarding driving experience. The RX's suspension has been updated and customers can also specify an Adaptive Variable Suspension system for sportier performance. Ride and handling have also been improved thanks to the engineering of a significantly more rigid vehicle body.

The new Lexus RX is available with an active stabiliser system that minimises the amount of vehicle body roll, while at the same time keeping the car stable as you turn into a bend, and comfortable for everyone on board. The system — which was the first of its kind in the world — cancels out the roll, but stability can still be affected if you are driving over a bumpy surface or hit a pothole.

This is where the new Roll Skyhook Control comes into play, adding a valuable new dimension to the performance of the active stabilisers. This highly responsive, electronic system calculates in an instant the virtual damping force that might occur and simultaneously creates a counter force. The sensation is like the vehicle being stabilised in mid-air — in effect "hooked in the sky". The result is minimised body movement, so the driver can really enjoy steering the car through bends.

Improved suspension

The new RX features an updated version of suspension system used in the current model: MacPherson struts at the front and a rear trailing arm and double wishbone set-up, with components fine-tuned for extra stability when cornering and improved handling overall. Changes include a larger front stabiliser bar, which gives both a crisper turning response and better ride quality.

Sportier performance can be gained by specifying Lexus's optional Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). This automatically adjusts the damping force delivered by the shock absorbers at each wheel in response to the quality of the road surface and the driver's inputs. For example, on rough roads, the system switches to a more compliant setting to maintain comfort. When driving through a bend, the damping force is firmer, to reduce body roll and give the RX more performance-focused, flatter cornering.

Building a more rigid body

As well as advanced suspension tuning and technology, the new RX reaps the benefits of having a more rigid body — a fundamental quality that has a positive impact on its handling, comfort and cabin quietness, as well as providing more robust crash protection.

Lexus has achieved this with innovative techniques, including a new ring-frame construction method to create stronger sections around the front and rear doors. Panel joints have been made stronger using high-tech body adhesives and laser screw welding, and high tensile strength steel has been used at strategic points throughout, including the A and B-pillars and underbody crossmembers. Extra spot welds around the rear of the body also contribute to the car's strength and handling stability.

lexus,2016 RX,campaigns,campaign

Lexus Safety System + provides an exceptional array of systems to forewarn the driver, protect against the risk of accidents and mitigate the consequences should an impact occur

</pp:summary>

The world's rich, famous and powerful rarely move without an entourage to take care of all their security needs. Now the benefits of personal close protection are being extended to owners of the new Lexus RX. The new luxury SUV offers a wealth of advanced technology features that are constantly at work to help you travel in safety, whether cruising at speed, heading off-road or simply manoeuvring into a tight parking spot.

Lexus has developed systems that monitor both the vehicle and its surroundings, ready to warn you of any risks and help you avoid an accident. The new RX will even recognise the signs of a driver being distracted or becoming drowsy and issue a prompt wake-up call.

Panoramic View Monitor

Negotiating a tight parking space or making your way over rough and unmade surfaces are familiar driving challenges, and ones which can too often result in bumps, scrapes and frayed tempers. These kinds of tasks are made easier and safer in the new Lexus RX thanks to a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor. This uses an array of cameras that not only give you an all-round view of your vehicle's location, but also provide a bird's eye view for even better sight of your immediate surroundings.

The Panoramic View Monitor works in conjunction with the Lexus Park Assist sensors and monitor, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to make you aware of obstacles, hazards and other vehicles that may be hidden from view from the driver's seat, eliminating any blind spots. When steering the car into parallel or series parking spaces, the Parking Assist Monitor can add guidelines to the real-time camera images to help you steer precisely, while front and rear sensors will sound an alert as move closer to another car or obstacle.

These are all part of the new RX's advanced driver assistance systems which is the most comprehensive package yet featured in the model, with up to 12 different elements. Lexus' aim is for it not just to provide extra protection for the RX and its occupants, but also to improve road safety generally.

Sway Warning — a Lexus first

The new RX can detect the signs of driver drowsiness with its new Sway Warning function — the first system of its kind. It uses the same monitors as the Lane Keep Assist/Lane Departure Alert to track the car's position within highway lane markings and detect if the vehicle wanders unintentionally out of its lane — due to driver tiredness, distraction or inattention. To help guard against the risk of an accident, it will automatically sound a warning and trigger an alert on the multi-information display to prompt the driver to take action. Its level of sensitivity can be manually adjusted to suit each driver's preference.

Lexus Safety System +

The new RX is equipped with Lexus Safety System +, a multi-feature, integrated safety package that delivers exceptional levels of active safety and driver assistance to help prevent accidents happening. Not only does Lexus provide the most comprehensive active safety provisions in the premium SUV market, it does so at a price that is significantly lower than that of rival systems.

At the heart of the Lexus Safety System + is the Pre-Crash Safety system with Pre-Crash Brake Assist. This uses a front-mounted camera and millimetre-wave radar to detect vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If it calculates a risk of a collision, it automatically warns the driver and the Pre-Crash Brake Assist engages to provide extra braking force the moment the brake pedal is pressed. If the driver fails to react and the system judges a collision to be imminent, the brakes are automatically applied to reduce vehicle speed and the force of any impact.

The same radar unit is used to provide Adaptive Cruise Control, which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, even at very low speeds. Once the way ahead is clear, the RX automatically accelerates to its pre-set cruising speed.

The package also includes Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA), which recognise when the new RX is deviating from its lane on the highway and help the driver steer the vehicle safely back to its correct path. Lane Departure Alert uses a camera on the windscreen to track the vehicle's course between lane markings painted on the road surface. If it judges that the new RX is about to move out of its lane without the turn indicator being used, the system lights up a warning on the multi-information display and vibrates the steering wheel. It will also apply appropriate steering control force to help bring the vehicle back on course.

Lane-Keeping Assist provides an extra layer of assistance, automatically providing steering inputs to keep the car safely within its lane, notably when the Adaptive Cruise Control is being used. In a first for a Lexus, Lane-Keeping Assist can be used even at very low speed, when the Adaptive Cruise Control is operating.

Lexus Safety System + further includes Automatic High Beam, which detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead and automatically switches the headlights between high and low beam. This can be upgraded to an Adaptive High Beam system, which gives even better illumination by adjusting light distribution to avoid dazzling other road users, instead of switching the headlights to low beam.

The driver also gains a "second set of eyes" when it comes to important road signs on motorways and major routes. The Road Sign Assist system uses a front camera to recognise principal warning and command signs, which are then replicated on the multi-information display, reducing the risk of the driver not being aware speed limits, lane closures and other important information.

lexus,2016 RX,safety

• Innovative technology used to create distinctive laser cut wood inserts in centre console and door trim

• Contributes to exceptional quality and comfort in the cabin of the RX, inspired by omotenashi — the Japanese principles of welcoming hospitality

</pp:summary>

In its mission to extend the superior quality that has long been a hallmark of its vehicles, Lexus has again recruited the skills of Yamaha specialists experienced in piano manufacturing. As a result, craftsmanship skills admired in the world's greatest concert halls are now being displayed in the more intimate surroundings of the new Lexus RX.

A laser-etching process used in the creation of some of the world's most exclusive musical instruments is amplifying the fine contemporary quality of the real wood veneers featured in the luxury SUV's cabin.

Applied to trim sections on the centre console and doors, the process makes precision cuts through the wood to expose a layer of aluminium beneath, creating a striking line design that draws on the sharp contrast between the rich qualities of the wood and the cool appearance of the metal. The effect is heightened by the application of a protective top coat that is polished to a high shine.

The technique is applied to the RX's sapele wood option, a material with a distinctive ribbon grain that is also used in the manufacture of grand pianos and guitars. As the wood is delicate and vulnerable to damage, the work can only be done by skilled craftsmen. The quality of the results can be compared to a pinstripe woven into the material of a tailor-made suit, or a light-capturing design engraved on the surface of a piece of fine crystal.

This advanced process demonstrates how the new RX follows the pattern set by its successful predecessors in embracing innovative technologies, materials and designs that can reshape people's perceptions of the kind of luxury a prestige SUV can deliver.

With the benefit of 100 years' experience in creating products that please the eye and the ear, Yamaha has been working with Lexus since the launch of the premium automotive brand 25 years ago, providing high-end and exclusive ornamentation elements for the LS limousine and other models.

Demonstrating omotenashi — Japanese tradition of hospitality

The Yamaha laser cut wood inserts are one example among many features in the RX which are inspired by the best traditions of omotenashi, the Japanese concept of welcoming hospitality.

The principles of omotenashi have strongly influenced the way Lexus has designed the RX to be a vehicle in which people feel secure, comfortable and totally at their ease, with all their needs taken care of.

Omotenashi is valued by Lexus as a means of ensuring its vehicles exceed customer expectations. It involves close attention to detail and a personalised approach that understands that every customer is different. The aim is to create a warm and relaxed, yet refined interior environment.

Its influence can be seen many features of the new RX, from the limousine-like comfort provided for rear seat passengers to a power tailgate that can be opened with just the wave of a hand.

Limousine-like rear seat accommodation

Special attention has been paid to ensure everyone on board the new RX enjoys the highest levels of comfort, not least the rear passengers.

An increase in the vehicle's wheelbase compared to the previous model has helped secure even more generous leg, head and shoulder room for the three rear seats. These feature integrated heaters and are power adjustable, with increased angles of recline and cushion slide adjustment (in a 60:40-split configuration).

The result is space and comfort that bear comparison with Lexus' LS flagship limousine. The cabin ambience can be further enhanced by specifying a panoramic roof, which introduces more light and an even greater sense of spaciousness.

Smart power tailgate

The new RX is the first Lexus to offer the convenience of a smart power tailgate. If you are carrying bags or luggage, there's no need to fumble for your key fob or reach for the tailgate release button to open up the trunk. Instead, you can just move your hand over the Lexus emblem on the tailgate to operate the mechanism — you don't even have to touch it.

A sensor recognises the key fob in your pocket or bag and the trigger motion to open the tailgate. The system will work even if you are wearing gloves, and with an elbow motion if both your hands are full. The result is an extra level of convenience and luxury that perfectly expresses the hospitality principles enshrined in omotenashi.

World-first height-adjustable cup/bottle holder

Cupholders are provided in almost every car on the market, but none has yet achieved the neat versatility of the kind provided in the new Lexus RX.

Lexus has produced a simple but effective system which adapts the depth of the holder in the centre console according to whether you are using a cup or can, or a taller drinks bottle. The base of the unit is fitted with a sliding height adjustment mechanism: simply press down with your bottle to gain the maximum depth, or press the release button to bring the base up to the level appropriate for a cup or can. The adjustment range is 70 to 110mm.

lexus,2016 RX,campaigns

The individuality of the F series is reinforced by an exterior that appeals to motorsports fans through a low center of gravity, a large spindle grill and large air ducts. The interior focuses on function, with special seats that achieve superior body hold through integral skin foam molding.

• RX 450h delivers a total output of 230 kW/313 DIN hp and returns class-leading CO2 emissions starting at 120g/km

</pp:summary>

As the best-selling model in the brand's 26-year history—with sales of circa 2.2 million units—the RX represents three out of ten vehicles ever sold by Lexus.

Always ground-breaking, always ahead, in 1998 Lexus launched the RX, the first ever SUV to offer the refinement of a luxury sedan. Disrupting mainstream thinking again, in 2004, Lexus introduced the world's first luxury hybrid — the pioneering RX 400h SUV. On September 15th, the all-new RX will be presented as a European premiere at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The all-new RX's mix of sharp creases and curves represents a bold evolution in the model's styling, sharing the same design DNA with other recently-launched models in the Lexus line-up. Inside the RX reflects an impeccable balance of luxury, spaciousness and functionality.

Under the hood, the completely reengineered 3.5-liter direct-injection V-6 hybrid engine is now producing a total output of 230 kW/313 DIN hp. The RX 450h returns average fuel consumption from 5.2l/100 km, and class-leading CO2 emissions starting at 120g/km. In selected markets, two other models will be also offered: the RX 200t equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine and the RX 350 fitted with a 3.5-litre V6 direct-injection.

Moreover, this innovative and sophisticated premium crossover welcomes new conveniences and technology features such as for example Head-Up Display (HUD), central 12.3-inch Lexus Premium Navigation using the latest Remote Touch controller, a near-360° Panoramic View Monitor, smart power tailgate and wireless charger for portable devices to make this the best Lexus sport-utility vehicle offering to date.

True to Lexus' ongoing focus on safety, the all-new RX comes with significant improvements in active and passive safety. Among these new improvements are the upgraded body structure that heightens the overall passive safety of the RX, and Lexus Safety System +, which helps avoid or mitigate collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds.

Entering this month in production, the RX will be priced to compete at the heart of the segment. The first deliveries are aimed for the end of the year but several pre-sales activities have already started throughout Europe with amongst others an online car configurator available on www.lexus.eu.

lexus,2016 RX

Entering production at the end of 2010 for sale throughout the world, the CT 200h is Lexus' first ever compact, five-door car. It marks the introduction of the first, and only, full hybrid vehicle to the European premium compact segment.

Retaining strong visual links to the LF-Ch concept, the CT 200h has a highly distinctive, sharp-edged, resolute appearance which immediately sets it apart from rivals. Its interior brings unprecedented levels of quality, refinement and progressive luxury to the segment.

Combining a 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and a powerful electric motor, the CT 200h's Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain combines 2.0 litre performance with class leading CO2 emissions. It offers customers a choice of two distinct driving moods -Dynamic, or Relaxing- in conjunction with four, selectable drive modes.

Featuring a new platform with unique double wishbone suspension architecture to the rear, the Lexus CT 200h has been specifically developed to combine superior driving involvement and handling agility with the ride comfort expected of any Lexus.

Created for those who wish to lower their emissions but not their standards, the CT 200h is new gateway to Lexus, and will bring a younger group of customers to the brand.

LFA

LFA Sales

Since its debut at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, global demand for Lexus' thoroughbred LFA supercar has remained consistently strong, and the level of demand is now in excess of the announced 500 unit production run.

However, Lexus has not yet confirmed any orders, and prospective customers who have not yet registered their interest should not be deterred.

The deadline for receiving initial expressions of interest is set at mid-March, to coincide with the end of the Geneva Motor Show. Thereafter, the process of allocating the 500 units across the 56 countries wherein the LFA is being offered will begin.

Final allocation will be fixed in April, and individual orders confirmed with customers by the end of May.

Customer Information

Encapsulating a broad spectrum of customer profiles from business people to drivers of competition sports cars, some 75-80% of requests for further information or expressions of interest have come from non-Lexus customers.

The remaining 20-25% are Lexus owners already familiar with the unparalleled levels of quality, refinement and technological sophistication which hallmark the brand.

A high percentage of requests have come from customers who have closely followed the different stages of concept car development since the LFA project was started in 2000, and who appreciate its unique, eye-catching design.

A complete information on the LFA including all technical specifications can be found on the USB stick enclosed to this presskit.

RX 450h FWD

Boasting class-leading CO2 emissions of just 140 g/km, a new, front-wheel drive version of Lexus' full hybrid crossover, the RX 450h FWD, is now on sale in selected European markets.

The RX 450h is the high-performance flagship of the RX range, the third generation of which remains the world's best-selling SUV. Combining smooth, powerful performance with class-leading CO2, NOx and particulate emissions, the benefits of second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive continue to attract new customers to the brand.

Sales of the RX 450h have been higher than expected, and its segment share has grown significantly in major European markets. This trend is expected to continue, and will be boosted by the arrival of the RX 450h FWD.

The new, front-wheel drive Lexus SUV shares the RX 450h AWD's full hybrid drive powertrain componentry and 220 kW/299 bhp maximum power output, but has no rear transaxle or rear electric motor, effecting a weight saving of some 65 kg. It returns class-leading CO2 and NOx emissions of 140 g/km and 13 mg/km respectively.

Positioned at the heart of the fleet market and on the significant, 140 g/km European taxation threshold, the new, front-wheel drive Lexus full hybrid crossover reinforces the RX 450h's position as the cleanest and most efficient premium SUV in its class.

lexus,2011 CT,2010 Geneva,CT 200h,hybrid,2012 LFA,RX 450h,2016 RX
