THE NX OVERTRAIL PROJECT

THE NX OVERTRAIL IN DETAIL

Exterior

The NX Overtrail is easily distinguished from other NX models with its dedicated external styling features. It sits higher from the ground, with the suspension raised by 15 mm, and rides on exclusive-design 18-inch matt black alloy wheels fitted with chunky all-terrain tyres. The black detailing theme also includes the roof rails, the door mirror casings and the fog lamp surrounds. The window mouldings have a black metallic finish, while the Lexus spindle grille has a gloss black mesh and black stainless steel surround.

These black elements strike a sharp contrast with the NX Overtrail’s signature new colour, Moon Desert. Six other paint finishes are available. In a distinctive touch, the LEXUS name on the back door is rendered in grey.

Interior

The cabin is equally distinctive, with an Overtrail-exclusive finish. Supple yet durable Tahara black synthetic leather is used for the seat upholstery, with contrasting khaki used for the bolsters, arm rests, door panels and detail stitching in the black headlining. There are also new Bookmatch natural woodgrain trim inserts.

True to the Lexus welcoming spirit of Omotenashi, there is a range of features that help make life on board more comfortable, relaxing, and restorative. For example, the air conditioning system uses advanced nanoe-X air quality technology, feeding trillions of minuscule water molecules into the cabin. This has the proven effect of combating bacteria, viruses, mould and bad odours, while also helping refresh human hair and skin with a moisturising effect. The interior lay-out is flexible so you can easily fold rear seats when you need more space to carry your leisure kit or luggage. Even with all the seats in place there’s room for two large suitcases in the load space, while a power back door with hands-free kick-sensor operation makes loading easy. If you need to carry more, there are multiple accessories such as roof boxes and cycle carriers to choose from. If a towing hitch has been specified, you can tow up to 1,500 kg* – muscle enough to carry plenty of sports or leisure equipment.

Smart technologies

The NX Overtrail keeps you connected when on the move with the latest Lexus Link Pro multimedia system. This package includes a high-definition 14-inch touchscreen, an on-board voice assistant and both cloud-based and embedded navigation systems. As well as a front USB-A port for device connection, there are four USB-C charging ports, plus a wireless smartphone charging tray. Simple wireless smartphone connection is enabled for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Keeping you safe

This is a car that’s constantly working to keep you safe, warning of hazards and ready to act when there’s imminent risk of an accident. The latest generation Lexus Safety System + uses advanced camera and radar technology to check the NX’s surroundings, recognise hazards and alert the driver or initiate braking, steering and car control to help avoid an accident. As well making driving safer, it eases the burden on the driver, effortlessly maintaining a steady speed and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and road users.

 The NX was the first Lexus to be equipped with an E-latch system. Linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor, this gives an alert if the driver or a passenger is about to open a door into the path of traffic approaching from the rear. If necessary, it will block the door opening if there is a collision risk.

There is more help when you need to manoeuvre into tight parking spaces with both front and rear parking sensors. When precise positioning is needed, a Panoramic View Monitor gives you a 360-degree view of the area immediately around – and beneath – the car, showing areas that can’t be seen from the wheel.

The driving experience

For the driver, the elevated position at the wheel is complemented by the Tazuna cockpit design. Tazuna is a Japanese term describing a rider’s control of their horse using just slight adjustment of the reins; in the NX it provides similar easy and intuitive control with all the principal controls and information sources – head-up display, digital instrumentation, and multimedia display – arranged closely around the driver, so only minimal hand or eye movement are needed, keeping your focus firmly on the road ahead.

The raised suspension increases the ground clearance to 200 mm, so the NX Overtrail can take uneven road surfaces in its stride. On slightly loose and slippery ground, the driver can engage Trail mode which has been added to the Drive Mode Select.  This automatically optimises the car’s suspension and control systems to suit the conditions.

Like the NX F SPORT, the Overtrail has sophisticated Adaptive Variable Suspension which instantly responds to changes in the driving conditions so that the ride remains stable, comfortable and reassuring. Precise handling and body control are further helped by additional performance dampers at the rear of the vehicle.

Peaceful progress

A calm and quiet cabin is central to the NX Overtrail driving experience. To ensure life on board is insulated from unwelcome noise and vibration, Lexus began right at the start of the car’s development phase by risk-mapping of the interior so that countermeasures could be perfectly designed and located.

Major features that suppress noise intrusion and generation include using acoustic-quality glass for the windscreen and front windows and adopting flush door mouldings and a new twin-latch system for securing the bonnet. The level of attention extends all the way to the surface shape of the fins on the cabin air vents to minimise noise from the airflow. There’s also the benefit of Active Noise Control which reduces noise and booming from the engine.

Powertrains

The NX Overtrail can be specified with three of the current NX powertrains: the NX 350h self-charging hybrid; the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid and the NX 350 petrol (available only in Eastern Europe). All-wheel drive is provided as standard – Lexus’ electric E-Four system on the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.

THE NX SUCCESS STORY

The first generation NX was first introduced in 2014 and was an instant success for Lexus. Having originated the market for luxury, recreational SUVs with the RX model in 1998, the company was now offering a mid-size model that gave the brand wider appeal, reaching new and younger customers.

The aim was to capture the crossover between sport and fashion, witnessed in everything from fashion to bikes and watches. Practicality was blended with user-friendly tech and refinement to create a car that expressed “progressive luxury”.

The NX was established as Lexus’ best-selling model in Europe by the time an all-new second generation was introduced in 2021. This was a transformative model, not just for the NX but Lexus as a whole, opening the “next chapter” for the brand, setting the template for every subsequent new model.

The innovation extended from a brand new vehicle platform to a new design language and new powertrains. It was Lexus’ first plug-in hybrid and the first model to adopt the Tazuna driver’s cockpit design.  “Feel More in Every Moment” was the tagline, reflecting how the car’s dynamic performance – the control, comfort and confidence of the Lexus Driving Signature – had been taken to a higher level.

To date, Lexus has sold almost a quarter of a million NX models in Europe and more than 1.5 million globally. Last year it was again the brand’s most popular European model, with nearly 26,000 units sold. By the end of June this year, the sales tally stood at more than 13,000 units.

Lexus is looking to ease the familiar stresses of driving with a new version of its NX mid-size luxury SUV that’s designed to promote more peaceful, confident and fulfilling journeys, whether moving around town or getting closer to nature on roads less travelled.

The Overtrail grade is not a rugged off-roader but an interpretation of the NX that projects a purposeful, premium image with dedicated styling details and enhancements to ensure smooth progress when you want to get away from it all on rural roads. 

The NX’s Lexus Next Chapter design is given a new perspective with raised suspension and the fitting of new-design 18-inch alloy wheels with chunky all-terrain tyres. There is a uniform black finish for the door mirror casings, door handles, wheel arch mouldings and roof rails, metallic black window mouldings and matt black wheels. The spindle grille gains extra emphasis with a bright metallic machined frame and mesh.

These details strike a smart contrast with the new Moon Desert paint finish, a sandy metallic shade that is exclusive to the Overtrail grade (six other colours are available).  In a distinctive touch, the LEXUS name on the back door is rendered in grey.

There is an exclusive look for the interior as well, with front sport seats upholstered in Black synthetic leather with body-holding bolsters in Khaki. The door cards and the centre console storage box are also finished in matching Khaki, with new Geo Layer trim inserts inspired by the patterns of natural rock strata.

Raising the suspension by 15 mm increases the vehicle’s overall height to 1,675 mm, increasing ground clearance and giving the driver a commanding view of their surroundings. Similarly, ground clearance has risen to 200 mm, so the Overtrail grade can take rougher roads in its stride. Dynamic performance has been further enhanced with additional rear bracing.

Fashions come and fashions go, but with each year that passes Lexus reliability remains constant. The lasting quality of its vehicles has been validated yet again with the number one ranking in the annual What Car?  Reliability Survey for a seventh time.

Claire Evans, What Car? consumer editor and the person behind the survey, said the following: "If reliability is your priority, a Lexus model is the best choice. Not only do its models rarely go wrong, but when they do its dealerships resolve all issues swiftly and at no cost to owners. It is the brand that leads the field for dependability."

Almost 22,000 motorists took part in the leading consumer champion and car-buying platform in the UK 2023 study into the cars which perform best and worst when it comes to faults. The results, covering 32 brands and 178 different models up to five years old, showed Lexus achieving an unmatched score of 98.3 per cent, taking into account not just the number of problems experienced, but also how long they took to put right and the cost of repairs.

Lexus excelled in the survey’s categories, most notably in the family SUV class where the first generation NX came top with 99.8 per cent; the all-new, current NX second with 99.4 per cent; and UX third with 99.3 percent. The Lexus RX was placed second among large SUVs on 98.6 percent.  All of these are self-charging hybrid electric models – the powertrain technology the survey found to be the most reliable and simplest to repair when an issue does arise.

The Lexus IS saloon may no longer be on sale, but owners still appreciate its durability: it topped the executive car class with a 98 per cent score.

In line with its long-standing commitment to electrification, the new Predictive Efficient Drive technology from Lexus works in tandem with Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Over the past 18 years, Lexus has electrified the premium class and now boasts a range dominated by low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles featuring self-charging Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid technology.

As well as delivering the well-established benefits of electrified vehicles, such as their smooth ride, dynamic performance, reassuring reliability and low maintenance costs, Lexus actively supports customers to get the most from this technology for the benefit of drivers and the wider world.

With the help of the Lexus Link app, selected Lexus Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles with embedded navigation systems will be able to learn a driver’s regular routes and driving style, whilst simultaneously looking ahead via live traffic data to anticipate ways to save fuel. More economical driving is automatically and seamlessly achieved by optimising the charging and discharging of the battery on Hybrid models, and the use of full-electric or Hybrid modes on PHEV vehicles.

Navigation system data helps Predictive Efficient Drive identify regular locations for sudden deceleration, where regenerative braking can automatically be increased to maximise energy recovery. During navigation, when upcoming traffic is noted, the system proactively charges the battery to reduce future engine use when traffic flow slows or stops. Additionally, the technology analyses upcoming traffic and road conditions, such as up/downhill or urban/highway sections, and seamlessly adjusts battery charging and discharging for lower fuel consumption.

The smart system becomes increasingly effective during usage, so as the number of kilometres driven increases, so does the volume of data at its disposal, which is then used to make ever more efficient use of the vehicle’s electrified powertrain.

Predictive Efficient Drive made its debut in the latest Lexus NX Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid models with embedded Lexus Link Pro navigation and is expected to be rolled out to other models in the future.

Lexus also received two model-level awards, for NX and RX.

Toyota Motor Corporation received the most model-level awards, six, of all manufacturers, for the Toyota C-HR, Highlander, Sienna and Tacoma in addition to the two Lexus models.

The 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 30,062 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded from August through November 2022.

For Lexus, it is an opportunity to celebrate an exclusive and long-running partnership with luxury audio specialists Mark Levinson that has brought great music to millions of Lexus drivers and passengers.

Together, Lexus and Mark Levinson (one many prestige brands owned by parent company HARMAN International) have been raising the bar for the quality of in-car entertainment for more than 20 years. Today, bespoke sound systems are developed for each new model, benefiting from ever-more sophisticated technologies to deliver the best listening experience for everyone on board. That’s true whatever your listening preference: the grandeur of a symphony hall, the intimacy of jazz club or the thrill of a stadium gig – the sound reproduction gives you the sense that you are part of the event.

The latest fruits of this partnership will be revealed later this year with the launch two all-new SUVs – the new generation RX SUV and the ground-breaking, all-electric RZ.

“It’s really a partnership that begins with understanding the vision for the car and its occupants,” explains Savion Thompson, Acoustics Engineer at Mark Levinson. “Our team makes a point to learn early what a model means to Lexus, then we develop the system to enhance this vision.

“We do a lot of listening – to the chief engineers, the factory workers and the dealerships, and then to the buyers. Part of my job is to know what is out there, but even more important is to choose the right fit for the car. That’s a process that takes an entire team and constant feedback at every checkpoint, following a strong philosophy of constant improvement, or kaizen,” continued Thompson.

The synergies between the two companies include the fact they both aim to deliver the highest standards. “We strive to be the highest performing audio brand in the world,” says Kyle Roche, Senior Global Marketing Manager at HARMAN. “Aiming to achieve near zero per cent harmonic distortion and crystal-clear acoustic performance, our goals align with Lexus very closely. That is one of the reasons why the partnership has lasted for more than 20 years.”

One of the most recent examples of Mark Levinson’s work in a Lexus production model is the audio system tailor-made for the new NX 350h hybrid electric SUV. The focus of the development programme was to use new PurePlay architecture to create a 7.1 surround sound effect, bringing the sound closer to the listener’s ear level and taking the listening experience beyond what might be expected from an in-car audio system. This reflects how the quality of the audio contributes to Lexus’s famous omotenashi hospitality principles, going beyond people’s expectations to make them feel completely at home in their car.

Work began on designing the audio system around five years before the model’s market launch and involved close scrutiny of the size and shape of the vehicle interior.

“Space is always at a premium, particularly in a vehicle the size of the NX,” says Savion Thompson. “However, both Lexus and Mark Levinson set a goal to keep the sound system as close to ideal as possible. This called for months of vehicle study, lots of hand-made prototypes, simulations, measurements and presentations. The team persisted, even stripping the vehicle down to the sheet metal and reworking the factory process to make way for innovation.”

There is also the quest to find the right balance between performance and efficiency: “As vehicle manufacturers strive to increase output while using fewer resources, the multimedia system has to respond to the same challenges. Every millimetre of space and gramme of material needs to be negotiated with a clear value-added purpose,” Thompson adds.

The Pureplay speaker layout in the NX features seven matched 90mm speakers, positioned strategically around the cabin to create an enhanced sound stage. To this are added an internally coupled subwoofer, and 8x9 door woofer and a brand-new, fully discrete 12-channel amplifier.

“The amplifier is the core of our sound,” says Thomson, “we have been working on it for five years in what has been a true collaboration between our automotive and luxury teams.”

The significant package of advanced safety and driver assistance systems provided on the all-new Lexus NX have helped earn the mid-size luxury SUV a top five-star rating from the independent European testing group Euro NCAP.

Released yesterday, the test report shows the NX excelling in every category. It validates the quality and effectiveness of the latest, third generation of Lexus Safety System + fitted as standard to all NX models, together with comprehensive passive safety provisions and the car’s built-in strength to provide protection in the event of an impact. The results apply equally to the hybrid electric NX 350h and plug-in hybrid electric NX 450h.

In detail, the NX achieved an 83% score for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupants, 83% for vulnerable road users and 91% for the performance of its safety assistance systems.

Lexus has significantly enhanced the scope and functionality of its active safety and driver assistance systems so that they are able to detect a wider range of hazards in different driving scenarios. For example, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) benefits from upgrades to its millimetre-wave radar and camera systems so that it can now detect pedestrians and motorcycles in the car’s path. It also offers an increased safeguard when making a turn at an intersection, determining when there is a high collision risk with oncoming traffic, or crossing pedestrians and cyclists.

The NX was also the first Lexus model to adopt a new Emergency Steering Assist. This instantaneously recognises when the driver is swerving to avoid an obstacle – a pedestrian or stationary vehicle for example – and provides automatic steering assistance while keeping the car within its traffic lane. These and other improvements to the PCS have significantly increased its accident risk detection capability.

All the safety assistance systems tested by Euro NCAP received the top “good” classification, including the performance of the PCS, Lane Trace Assist, speed assistance/limiter and driver awareness monitoring.

While the NX meets the key criteria of Euro NCAP testing, it goes further to provide safe driving and peace of mind. For example, with the Safe Exit Assist, it marks a world first in linking operation of its smooth electric e-Latch door opening system to its Blind Spot Monitor; if the monitor detects traffic approaching from the rear, it will cancel the door opening to avoid a collision risk. Lexus Safety System + also provides Adaptive Cruise Control, with performance improved so that it can react more quickly to traffic cutting-in and follow a more natural line through bends, with speed adjusted in a way that feels more natural to the driver.

While Lexus Safety System + is fitted as standard to all European versions of the new NX, owners of higher grade models can further equip their vehicle with an optional Extended Safety Package. This includes Lane Change Assistance (LCA), which provides automatic lane change steering when the driver uses the turn indicators in highway driving, and Front Cross-Traffic Alert, which uses radar monitoring to detect and warn the driver of traffic approaching from either side when emerging from a junction at low speed.

We have been told about “significant change” in Lexus design with the Next Chapter, while keeping the core Lexus design philosophy. Can you give some examples of how this is demonstrated in the new NX – what are the main differences between the new NX and the previous model?

“At first glance, there is an evident design relationship between the new NX and the original model, but its impact and appeal have been heightened with more pronounced contrasts - sharp hardness and warm elegance that give the car even wider visual appeal. You can see this, for example, in the different surface expressions in the top and lower sections of the side doors.

“We have kept the avant garde feel and provocative image of the original NX but the design has been refined to make it both more glamorous and more mature. The key direction was to give the NX originality rooted in its proportions, creating the sense of a solid piece of metal with a seductive form. We also wanted simplicity that reflects the car’s new technologies – simple design that expresses the appeal of innovative functions.”

“Functional Beauty” is an exciting concept, linking design to the need to include new technologies in the car. How challenging is it to combine good design with good technologies?

“There’s an expression we use in Japan to describe a difficult task – ‘it’s hard enough to pass a thread through the eye of a needle.’ New technologies need to be attractive in design terms, or else there is risk they won’t be liked or used by customers. As designers we have to create designs that are attractive and easy to use, achieving the required functionality within limited dimensions. It might be as difficult as threading a needle, but if we can get it right, we can make the product more desirable. This is a concept that Lexus wants to pursue in the future.”

Looking at the exterior of the new NX, we can see the signature spindle grille. What were your priorities when it came to designing the new-look grille, as part of a new “face” for the NX?

“We have evolved the spindle grille in line with the new Lexus design language so that the concept for the body design is actually derived from the grille. It merges with the body, giving the impression of the car having a single, solid form. We have also arranged the surface of the grille vertically. Not only is this good for cooling the engine, it also accentuates the long and sleek bonnet, perfectly expressing the car’s functional beauty”

What kind of design impact did you want the NX to have when people see it on the road?

“Lexus has always sought to bring more ‘colours’ to its customers’ lifestyles. Where the new NX is concerned, we hope that its exterior design will give them a sense of the driving pleasure it will deliver when they take the wheel. We have greatly evolved the NX’s proportions and its dynamic feel in a design that combines glamour and sharpness. I am convinced that the design we have produced has met the goals we set ourselves at the outset.”

And a similar question, how did you want the driver and passengers to feel when they are inside the new NX?

“For the driver, we designed a cockpit that provides excellent visibility, so they can concentrate on the road ahead. For the passenger, the seat is comfortable and relaxing, and the easy-to-use cabin design means that you can make yourself at home, wherever you sit in the car.

“In the new NX’s cockpit we have applied Lexus’ Tazuna concept – it means ‘using the reins’ – to give the driver more intuitive connection with the car, so they can control it just as they want. It’s inspired by the communication between a human rider and horse, using only the reins. You can see the Tazuna principles in the functional relationship between the (touch-tracer) switches on the steering wheel and head-up display and the grouping of the information sources (the HUD and the multi-information and multimedia displays). This design concentrates on the driver’s forward view, so there’s less eye movement needed to operate the controls or take in information, which is faithful to our guiding theme of ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’.”

For the driver in particular, the Tazuna concept creates a very special environment. Was this one of the most challenging parts of the design to create?

“The Tazuna cockpit actually worked very well within the overall ‘tangible space’ concept we adopted for the interior design. This is about making the ‘empty space’ in the cabin a tangible element in the design. Each area – the driver’s cockpit and the front passenger space – is optimised. With Tazuna, this focuses the driver’s attention on the business of driving, while the passenger can relax in comfort. You can see the effect of this in design details such as the placing of switches for driving-related functions on the driver’s side and comfort and entertainment controls on the passenger side.”

Which elements of the new NX’s design are you most proud of? 

“It’s the fusion of sharpness and alluring form in the design. It’s new approach for Lexus and it was very difficult to express these two conflicting ‘tastes’ in a well-balanced mixture. I believe the NX’s surface expression, which combines sharp edges with expansive, curved surfaces, gives you the sense of high-precision quality co-existing with a warm yet gorgeous feel.

“We moved away from the conventional approach to use a different design process to create a surface with highlights and reflections. As a result, the NX projects a different expression in different environments. I am proud of how the design team has succeeded in creating a design that captures and enhances and the NX’s agile and dynamic driving quality.”

On a personal note, how did you become a car designer and what qualities do you think are necessary to make a designer good at their job.

“Originally, I studied mechanical engineering, aiming for a career as an engineer. At the same time, the importance of design was beginning to be highlighted in engineering university courses. I felt that a next generation engineer would need to have a creative mindset, combined with an engineer’s precision.

“I think the most important qualities for a designer are to be able to gain an overview of all the challenges presented by a project and to inspire others to work together as team with creative tools. Of course, the minimum requirements for a designer remain, such as drawing and visualising skills.

“Firstly, to create something, you have to think about the initial issues that need to be solved. It may start with inspiration, but you need to be able to see things from different perspectives to finish a product without having to compromise. Secondly, to build a car, you need the help of many talented people. I think it’s essential for a designer to have the ability to collaborate with others and inspire them to work in the same direction, using creative visualising tools.”

In launching the all-new NX, Lexus has done more than deliver a new car – it has brought about a revolution in its approach to vehicle development.

The second generation of Lexus’ mid-size luxury SUV is the first model to be developed using new techniques and strategies, targeting even higher quality and dynamic performance. Chief Engineer Takeaki Kato explains: “Lexus’ development scheme was substantially changed for the new NX. We fully incorporated digital, or model-based development, using computers for smarter engineering. This gives us benefits such as being able to detect all inconsistencies when carrying out quality assurance.”

At the same time new digital tools were adopted, physical items were still used to confirm the sensory aspects of the NX – how it looks, feels and sounds to the customer.

The human element has also been given new priority in the development of the NX’s dynamic performance. Professional racing drivers were enlisted to test the NX at Lexus’ Shimoyama proving ground and their feedback was used to refine the car’s responsiveness and handling.

Cost management is another important aspect, with a focus on reducing the cost of existing technology features so the new, advanced technologies can be offered at an affordable price to the customer.

These initiatives will be incorporated for all future Lexus models and will continue to evolve, with stronger collaboration between chief engineers to help progress the next chapter of the Lexus brand.

A genuinely “all-new” vehicle

Even at first glance, it’s easy to recognise the all-new NX as a successor to Lexus’ original mid-size luxury SUV. But while there is a clear visual link between the two models in terms of an evolution in design and styling, they are very different vehicles – in fact, more than 95% of the parts have been newly developed. This approach covers all aspects of the new NX: performance, ride, handling, safety, comfort, connectivity, and more.

The changes extend to every aspect of the vehicle, from powertrain components to a wealth of individual features such as the seats, the steering wheel, the Lexus Link multimedia systems, Lexus Safety System + functions, the wheels, door mirrors and even the motor that operates the power back door more quickly and quietly. In every instance, the goal has been to deliver a better experience for the customer, from the way something works to how it looks, sounds and feels.

A new platform to deliver the Lexus Driving Signature

Perhaps no new feature is more fundamental to the character and quality of the car than its Lexus Global Architecture K (GA-K) platform. Using this new platform has brought the NX’s centre of gravity down by 20 mm and helped achieve a better weight balance between the front and rear of the car. It’s also 30% more rigid than the previous model’s chassis, which is key to agile, stable and responsive handling and stronger protection in an impact.

Furthermore, it is the foundation for securing the Lexus Driving Signature. A defining quality of new Lexus models, this is optimum dynamic response to the use of steering, throttle and brakes that gives the driver confidence and a sense of control and connection with their car at every moment. In addition to the new platform, Lexus has also introduced new braking, steering and suspension systems, co-ordinated and tuned to achieve consistent, seamless performance.

The dynamic quality is also supported by a new approach to the NX’s construction. This uses innovative steels that are both lightweight and exceptionally strong, new laser-based welding technologies, advanced body adhesives and clever reinforcement techniques with weight-saving tailor-welded blanks.  The attention to detail even extends to a new twin-latch system to secure the bonnet. Linked by a reinforcement component, these add to the car’s rigidity and suppress vibration when travelling at speed.

Lexus expects the NX’s “brand new” qualities will help it increase its sales and almost double its segment share in Europe. It predicts an increase from 3.6% to 6% in 2022 in its first full year of sales.

The Lexus NX 450h+ has been named the Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in the prestigious What Car? awards.

It is an auspicious first honour for the all-new mid-size premium SUV, Lexus’s first plug-in hybrid electric model, introduced in late 2021. What Car? has also recognised the Lexus LC 500 Convertible with the award for the Best High-end Convertible.

Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor, expressed warm praise for the Lexus: “The Lexus NX is one of the most compelling reasons to go green that we’ve yet seen, with a long electric-only range which should not only slash motorists running costs, but also makes for tempting company car tax rates. The NX is good to drive, too, and has an interior that’s hard to fault in any respect. In short, Lexus has proved that driving an electrified car without accepting compromises need not be a fantasy.”

Turning to the award for the LC 500 Convertible, he added: “the LC 500’s V8 is an aural delight whether you’re revving it out on the open road or bumbling around town. Moreover, when the roof is in place and you’re cruising at speed, the LC is much better at shutting out wind noise than its rivals. Add in concept car looks and beautiful interior that feels like it’s been built to outlast the Earth and you have an unspeakably desirable package.”

The 450h+ is the halo model of the all-new NX range, a model that opens a new chapter for Lexus, introducing new directions in design, new powertrains and significant improvements in dynamic performance. Technology innovation provides a superior multimedia and connectivity package and new and enhanced Lexus Safety System+ active safety and driver assistance systems.

Lexus brought to bear its premium market leadership in hybrid electric technology to produce a new powertrain for the NX 450h+ that excels in all key areas. The full plug-in system, including electric motors and battery, produces a maximum 309 DIN hp / 227kW, enabling acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. At the same time, CO₂ emissions of between 21-25g/km and fuel economy of 0.9-1.1 l/100 km are among the best in the model’s class.

Thanks to its powerful, rechargeable lithium-ion battery and all-round powertrain efficiency, NX 450h+ also provides a substantially higher EV range: at 70 to 74 km in the combined WLTP cycle, rising to 89 to 97 km in the urban cycle, this is as much as twice the range offered by competitors in its segment.

Lexus pursued the theme of “ultimate beauty” in producing the LC 500 Convertible, a car that successfully reinterprets the award-winning design of the flagship LC coupe. Thanks to sophisticated aerodynamics and the crafting of a bespoke folding soft-top mechanism, the car presents powerful, elegant lines and ensures occupants travel in complete comfort – roof up or down. Tuning of the naturally aspirated V8 engine note and the exhaust adds a special aural dimension to the driving experience.

Lexus and air race pilot Muroya have signed a team partnership agreement and they will further accelerate their joint efforts so that they could quickly link technologies and know-how of both sides to develop racing machines as well as the racing operation. Under the new team structure, Lexus strives to make history with Muroya to win the first championship of The Air Race.

Connectivity is one of the top priorities for luxury car customers, the ability to access information, communication and entertainment with seamless ease, at all times. Lexus has transformed performance in its all-new NX SUV with a new multimedia platform with 3.6 times faster operation and a 14-inch High Definition touch screen – one of the largest in the model’s segment.

Operation is fluid and response is instant, with information presented in crisp graphics that are clear to read in all lighting conditions. It is on these sound foundations that Lexus has constructed its most extensive multimedia package yet, giving customers access to a wealth of functions and information sources to make every journey easier, smarter and better-connected.

The system gives access to cloud-based navigation, an “always connected” service that uses up-to-the-moment information on traffic flows and incidents and local intelligence, such as fuel prices and parking. The 14-inch Lexus Link Pro also has an embedded navigation system, so coverage is uninterrupted when cloud connection isn’t possible. Navigation instructions are given in a conversational style designed to be easier for the driver to recognise: for example, “turn right at the filling station.” The central touch screen is combined with physical buttons for the most frequently used functions. Intelligent design places the menu and control icons on the driver’s side of the screen.

The human-centred approach is also witnessed in the new “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant. This responds to voice commands to search the net, make calls and operate the audio and climate control. It is programmed to understand a natural, conversational style and comments such as “I’m cold” or “I’m hungry” – responding by closing the windows or suggesting nearby food outlets. It can determine whether it’s the driver of passenger who’s speaking and can still recognise commands when there’s background noise. It is programmed to understand 19 different European languages.

Using the vehicle’s data communications module (DCM), Lexus can provide multimedia software updates over the air, with no need for the vehicle owner to download files or take their car to a service centre.

Lexus provides easy smartphone integration using wireless Apple CarPlay or (wired) Android Auto connection. Customers can specify a wireless charging tray which charges 50% quicker than before. More connection options are provided with four USB ports around the cabin – three USB-C suitable for charging and a USB-A port on the console for device connection.

The connectivity profile goes beyond the car itself: Lexus Link gives remote access to the vehicle using a smartphone app. Setting the climate control, locking and unlocking doors and triggering the hazard lights can all be accomplished remotely. The app also provides data on driving analytics, warning light information, coaching on hybrid car driving techniques and a “find my car” search function.

In western and central Europe, the new NX comes as standard with a four-year connection package, so there a no add-on costs when making full use of the multimedia system.

While the optional 14-inch Lexus Link Pro provides the most sophisticated multimedia experience, the standard 9.8-inch Lexus Link Connect is also completely new, with a platform that has 2.4 times the operating speed of Lexus’ previous system.

I Feel Love by Donna Summer, an already nostalgic and emotionally charged track, was remixed by Grammy nominee Neil Johnson while the film was designed by Director Rob Chiu - famous for his arresting visuals and emphasis on sound design. Crafted with the intention to make the audience feel, the story has been carefully constructed to deliver a rich sensorial and immersive experience, creating an ASMR response (tingling sensation through the head and spine) from the audience. Shot to showcase the driver’s connection to the all-new NX, the viewer is transported into the campaign and made to feel like they are breathing the air, cutting through the water, part of the rhythmic movement of the horse rider and gripped to the road.

Dolby Atmos technology has been applied to the track, a new technique which allows each instrument, sound and voice to be placed in its own “space”, transporting the listener within the song in a unique spatial way, while revealing every detail of the audio with unparalleled clarity and depth. The extra dimension adds a sensory element to the sound, while ensuring the listener is always positioned at the centre of the experience.

Using the Dolby Atmos mix, state-of-the-art binaural techniques were then added to the audio, which elicit a perception of sound that is created by the brain. By listening to two tones in two ears, each at a different frequency, the brain is able to produce an additional audible tone. This third tone is called the Binaural Beat, the perfect frequency between the two original tones played.

Research suggests that different frequencies and patterns of Binaural Beats are known to elicit various responses in the brain that help you feel more, including alertness and concentration (Gamma), mood and task performance (Beta), relaxation and restfulness (Alpha) and drowsiness/improved sleep (Thelta & Delta).

“Vitality x Tech” was the over-arching concept for the new NX – Vital expressing dynamic agility and Tech representing innovation with advanced technologies. Lexus has a proud history of innovation in safety, a reputation that advances to an even higher level in the all-new NX. A new feature that exemplifies the high level of intelligent safety is the Safe Exit Assist system. Linked to the NX’s new e-latch one-touch electronic door release, this uses the Blind Spot Monitor radar to check for any traffic approaching from the rear. If there’s a risk of the door opening into the path of a vehicle or cyclist, it will flash a warning light in the door mirror, sound an alert, and cancel the door unlatching. The process is much like how a personal chauffeur would ensure the way is clear before opening the door for passengers to exit the vehicle safely.

Lexus was the first manufacturer to combine this safety technology with an e-latch system, earning it the Secure Car honour in France’s prestigious 2021 Automobile Awards, hosted by the Automobile Club de France. Lexus estimates that Safe Exit Assist can help prevent 95% of the accidents caused by untimely or inadvertent opening of the car’s doors.

This is one element in a comprehensive safety package for the new NX that also marks the debut of the third generation of Lexus Safety System +. This brings new features and greater functionality to detect significantly more accident risks, alert the driver and implement braking or steering to help prevent a collision, or reduce the consequences if an impact is unavoidable.

For example, upgrades to the Pre-Collision System enable its radar and camera systems to now identify pedestrians and motorcycles in the car’s path. Its performance when the driver is making a turn at intersection has also been extended so that high collision risks with oncoming traffic and crossing pedestrians can be detected. There’s also a new Emergency Steering Assist function that recognises when the driver is swerving to avoid an obstacle – a pedestrian or stationary vehicle, for example – and provides automatic assistance to avoid a collision while keeping the car within its traffic lane. And the car can intelligently spot and suppress unintended sharp acceleration at low speed. These improvements mean the PCS’s accident risk detection capability has significantly increased compared to the previous system.

The sense of a safe, reliable partnership between driver and car is further demonstrated in Lexus Safety System + features that reduce the driving burden. For example, intelligent, Adaptive Cruise Control that adjusts automatically to bends in the road ahead and the varying speeds of preceding vehicles, with speed control that feels more natural. It helps with smoother overtaking, with acceleration as the driver indicates to change lane, or automatic slowing when they move in behind a slower vehicle. Lane Departure Alert and Lane Trace Assist also help ensure the car keeps safely within its lane.

Lexus offers the option of a digital rear-view mirror, which gives the driver a clearer, unobstructed view using a real-time feed from the rear-mounted camera. In night-time driving and poor weather, the images are clearer than those from a conventional mirror. Also, the view isn’t compromised if the vehicle is fully loaded with holiday luggage or large items. Going further still, NX customers can also add an Extended Safety Package, providing Lane Change Assistance, with automatic steering when the turn indicators are used to change lanes in high driving, and a Front Cross Traffic Alert, warning of unseen vehicles approaching from either side when emerging from a junction at low speed.

In a perfect relationship between rider and horse, small, precise hand movements of the reins are all that’s required to communicate commands. It’s this kind of direct, emotional connection that Lexus has sought to achieve in the design of the driver’s cockpit in its all-new NX luxury SUV.

The concept has been named Tazuna – the Japanese word for the reins of à horse – and it is being used for the first time in a Lexus production car.

The aim is to help the driver focus on the business of driving: “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.” It’s a simple principle, but many different elements have to be brought together in harmony to achieve it, from the driver’s position at the wheel to the shape and location of different controls and the way in which important vehicle and journey data are communicated.

Takeaki Kato, the NX Chief Engineer, explains: “We have redefined the ideal cockpit space as the contact point between the driver and vehicle, aiming for a design that enables a deeper and more intuitive connection and allows for more faithful controllability of the vehicle.”

Take your seat at the wheel of the new NX and you immediately experience what the Tazuna concept means. The human-centred design ties together the door, instrument binnacle and centre console in a unified cockpit that gives you intuitive access to the controls and information with minimum movement of hand and eye.

The primary information sources – the multi-information and instrument displays, multimedia screen and head-up display are positioned so they can be read at a glance, with high-definition graphics. The number of physical switches has been reduced and they are grouped according to their function, with the driving-related controls closest at hand.

New touch-tracer switches on the steering wheel can be customised to operate your preferred functions and you don’t have to look down at the wheel to find the control you need – when touch the switch, its operation is shown in the head-up or multi-information display.

The feeling of being control and connected with the car is also communicated by the shape of the driver’s seat, steering wheel, shift lever and pedals, defined with exacting attention to detail. For example, the front seat side bolsters have cut-out areas so there’s no elbow obstruction when operate the controls. The shape and cross-section of the new steering wheel have been precisely determined by Lexus’ Takumi craftspeople to provide the ideal grip feel – the key point of connection between driver and car. The shift lever, too, is compact and perfectly angled.

Drivers come in all sizes and statures, so the Tazuna cockpit can be adapted to provide comfort and easy operation for all with a wide range of power adjustment for the driver’s seat and steering wheel. Lexus also researched the different shoulder-to-fingertip reach measurement of people from around the world to calculate an optimum design. One of the results of this was to increase the length of the centre console – another example of Lexus’ human-centred design approach.

Following its introduction in the all-new NX, the Tazuna concept will be applied to future models, making its intuitive control a key part of the Lexus driving experience.

It is perhaps too easy to assume that all new plug-in hybrid cars are much the same. They come with a powerful, high-voltage battery that gives you plenty of emissions-free, all-electric driving. And when the battery needs recharging, you can keep on driving using the engine until you can plug into to your power supply at home, the office, or a public charge point.

That’s true, as far as the basics go. But with its all-new NX 450h+, its first plug-in hybrid electric, Lexus is showing that with its technology, you can achieve much, much more.

It’s thanks to Lexus’ unmatched electrified vehicle expertise among premium car makers, established over more than 15 years, that this mid-size luxury SUV has immediately set a new reference point in its segment for its combination of performance and efficiency, including how far you can drive with zero exhaust emissions. It outperforms most of its rivals in all key metrics – by a distance.

The NX 450h+’s EV (electric vehicle) driving range is between 70 and 74 km on the WLTP combined test cycle, rising to 89-97 km in urban cycle journeys – the areas where clean vehicle performance is particularly crucial. These figures, together with 0.9-1.1 l/100 km fuel economy and an official 21-25 g/km CO2 emissions, are best-in-class by a good margin. Moreover, on the open road the Lexus can be driven on its electric power at speeds up to 135 km/h.

Not only will this mid-size luxury SUV go further and longer on zero emission pure electric power, it will also deliver class-leading performance when its battery charge is depleted. That’s because it then reverts to full hybrid electric power, unlike most rivals which switch to their internal combustion engine. That inevitably means using more fuel and generating higher emissions: Lexus has found that in this scenario, fuel consumption in the NX 450h+’s competitor models is on average between 23 and 30% higher than for its plug-in hybrid SUV.

What makes this possible is the technical quality of the Lexus plug-in hybrid electric system. It brings together a high-efficiency 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine with an electric motor-generator and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery has an 18.1 kWh capacity – another class-leading figure – and can be fully recharged in around two-and-a-half hours, using a 32 A station and the onboard 6.6 kW charger. The quality of the battery, refined through Lexus’ superior technology know-how, is fundamental to the car’s EV performance.

Using this advanced powertrain does not compromise the NX’s authentic SUV capabilities: the NX 450h+ comes as standard with energy-efficient e-Four all-wheel drive (AWD), using an additional electric motor to drive the rear axle when needed.

The accomplishments of the NX 450h+ are just one aspect of the new NX’s leap forward in efficient performance. The NX 350h, the self-charging hybrid electric model, also benefits from comprehensive technical upgrades that deliver all-round improvements. Compared to the previous NX 300h, the new, fourth generation system is 24% more powerful, producing 244 DIN hp, which helps reduce the 0-100 km/h acceleration time for the AWD model by 15% to 7.7 seconds.

There is no penalty to pay for this power hike in terms of fuel economy and emissions, however. Official test figures show a drop of around 20% in the CO2 figures: these start from 135 g/km in the WLTP combined test cycle for the AWD model, down to 129 g/km for the front-wheel drive version, with fuel consumption from 5.7 l/100 km (FWD model).

The performance statistics demonstrate how the benefits delivered by Lexus’ technology leadership make the NX a compelling choice for customers, whether seeking a plug-in hybrid electric or self-charging hybrid electric. In a survey conducted by Destination Analysis in 2020, 57% of those asked said they planned on avoiding crowded places other next trip, and 40% said they’d consider camping, renting a motorhome and remote destinations.

Floriane believes that a distinction needs to be made between a break and travel: “People often confuse taking a vacation and travel - I always take my vacation in France! I think taking your vacation locally will be a big trend. The car will become a symbol of freedom for this kind of local or European trip.”

In a time of such uncertainty and worry over the future, many have found comfort in embracing nostalgia. Finding solace in a romanticised past is an understandable coping mechanism, and has fuelled our reconnection with our history, through cultural revival and simple, analogue living.

Signs of our return to old favourites are everywhere, according to The Art of Feeling More, a report published by Lexus in collaboration with trend forecasters WGSN. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) recently reported that 4.8 million vinyl records were sold in the UK in 2020, an almost 10% increase on 2019's figures. Vinyl sales have increased for the 13th year in a row, and are at their highest level since the early nineties, indicating a consistent focus on enjoying slower, luxurious technology in an era of streaming immediacy. On top of this, in April 2020, Hulu viewers watched nearly 11 million hours of 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls, and in April of this year a sealed copy of the 1986 Super Mario Bros. NES game sold at auction for €560,000. It seems that looking back can set you up for the future.

This feeling of nostalgia extends to food, with smell and taste strongly linked to memory and experience. Benedetta Parodi, Italian cooking star and host of Bake Off Italia, puts great importance in the comfort found in food, along with her own memories of her childhood: “I really enjoy sharing time with the people I love, both in the restaurant and at home.

I love to cook for others: for my family, for my friends. The great thing is that they always give me great satisfaction, eating the things I prepare with pleasure. The world’s major cities are set to change rapidly to meet the demands of a more sustainable, localised way of living, with many metropolitan centres already getting ahead of the game. Lexus is the Official Car of the Venice Film Festival – La Biennale di Venezia – for a fifth consecutive year. The 78^th edition of the festival will take place at the Venice Lido from 1-11 September, with Korean director Bong Joon-ho as president of the international competition jury and actress, singer and television presenter Serena Rossi as the “Godmother” host.

Lexus continues to strengthen its bonds with the magical world of cinema, sharing the desire to give people amazing and unforgettable experiences with special and distinctive products made with attention to detail, craftsmanship, innovation and a sense of vision.

The coolest red carpet in international cinema will also be the setting for the national Italian preview of the all-new NX mid-size luxury SUV. This model expands Lexus vision of electrification and marks a further evolution of the brand in technology, performance, quality and detailing that follow its human-centred philosophy.

The new NX opens a new chapter in Lexus design, for example with the distinctive Tazuna cockpit, which gives the driver intuitive control and connection with vehicle, like a rider using the reins to control their horse. It also marks a new direction in powertrain development, including Lexus’ first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which sets a new benchmark in its segment for combination of power, efficiency and pure electric driving capability.

Lexus will feature its brand ambassador, actor, director and screenwriter Edoardo Leo, at the festival. He will talk about the values that bind Lexus to the world of cinema through his own personal and professional experiences, and illustrate the collaborative work Lexus has engaged in to support the entertainment sector.

It is from these common values and a deep love of cinema that Poltrone Rosse was born, a crowdfunding initiative promoted by Lexus and UNITA, the National Union of Theatre and Audiovisual Interpreters, to support performers in a sector that has been particularly affected by the pandemic. In particular, it provides support to women who are absent from work through pregnancy. This work is being highlighted in a travelling event that will see a row of red armchairs – like those found in cinemas – installed in the squares of five Italian cities. Actors, famous film people and ordinary cinema-lovers can sit down and talk about their passion for the big screen, share anecdotes and reveal curiosities that illustrate the role and importance of cinema in their life and personal growth. Just like going to the movies, people will need to buy a ticket to sit in one of the red armchairs; the proceeds will be donated to the Poltrone Rosse project, together with UNITA. The event will be taking place in Venice during this year’s film festival.

As the Official Car throughout the festival, Lexus will have the privilege of accompanying actors, directors and famous faces from the world of cinema on the red carpet. A fleet of 35 cars will be providing VIP transport, representing the complete Lexus electrified range of SUVs – the NX, UX and RX models – together with the ES sedan and LC flagship coupe. It replaces a model that has been very successful for Lexus in Europe, with more than 170,000 units sold since its introduction in 2014. Most of these were to customers new to Lexus, making it a key contributor to the brand’s growth in the region.

To build on this achievement and deliver a compelling new product to customers who today expect much more from their vehicle, Lexus has carried out a total reinvention of the NX.

Its ambition and commitment are demonstrated in big advances in performance, handling and efficiency, and in a staggering 95% of the vehicle’s parts being new.

Lexus has maintained a human-centred approach throughout, key to delivering the new NX’s essential “Feel More in Every Moment” quality.

Following its official reveal on June 12, the new NX will be launched in European markets in the last quarter of 2021.

This approach has delivered important advances, including new design language; Lexus’ first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV); a connected and rewarding driving experience with the Lexus Driving Signature; a focused and intuitive driver’s cockpit designed according to the new Tazuna architecture; and the application of advanced, human-centred technologies for safety and convenience.

The new NX development programme has brought about a major change in Lexus’ approach to new vehicle development, applying digital modelling and computer techniques for smarter engineering that can achieve a higher level of quality assurance. At the same time, the Takumi-led skills of the human hand, ear and eye remain essential to achieving the highest sensory quality.

A further innovation was the use of professional racing drivers to help hone the car’s dynamic performance – particularly steering and braking – in track testing at Lexus’ Shimoyama facility. The goal for the design team was to create “functional beauty,” expressing in its styling how Lexus is meeting increasingly diverse customer requirements and preferences. The theme of “simplicity rooted in technology” informs the way clean, simple design can express the appeal of innovative functions and technology and how Lexus is keeping pace with the times.

The NX has balanced, strong proportions with a powerful. road-gripping stance. Compared to the first generation NX, overall length has increased by 20 mm, the wheelbase by 30 mm, the width by 20 mm and the height by 5 mm. These dimensions ensure optimum packaging, including more space in the cabin for rear seat passengers.

At the front, the hallmark Lexus spindle grille plays a more integral role in the car’s design: rendered more upright and with a more subtle frame, it accentuates the long bonnet and generates the overall form and volume of the body, which flares broadly towards the rear wings. Its more upright position also improves the grille’s cooling performance. The powerful, agile impression is strengthened by the wider front and rear tracks (enabled by the NX’s Global Architecture K (GA-K) platform), the long, sleek bonnet, short overhangs and flared wheel arches housing larger wheels – up to 20 inches in diameter.

At the rear, distinctive new features include new L-shaped rear combination lights, with signature Lexus blade lighting that spans the width of the vehicle, The Lexus emblem has been replaced with the “LEXUS” name emblazoned on the tailgate, creating a simple and more modern look.

The functional beauty is evident in details produced in collaboration between the NX’s designers and performance engineers to control airflow over and under the body, such as flush side mouldings and a new engine undercover design with a dimpled surface, like a golf ball. This creates micro-vortices in the air flow beneath the car, improving straight-line stability in high-speed driving.

The new NX marks the first application of Lexus’ new Tazuna concept for the driver’s cockpit design. Taking its name from a Japanese word describing a rider’s control of their horse using the reins, it focuses on giving the driver direct, intuitive control of the vehicle, following the principal of “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.” It also adds to the rewards of the driving experience, making the driver feel confident and in control of their vehicle and their surroundings.

An example of the intuitive control that’s central to the concept is the touch-tracer switches on the steering wheel, which can be customised to operate the driver’s preferred functions. When the switch is used, its shape is shown on the head-up display, so the driver doesn’t have to look down at the wheel to check the function they want to operate.

The cockpit feeling is created by the shaping of the space curving around from the driver’s door to the centre console. Here, the information sources – the multimedia screen, multi-information display, single-dial combimeter, centralised gauges and (where specified) head-up display – are grouped in a unified area so their content can be read with minimal eye and head movement.

A similar principle is applied to the arrangement of the vehicle controls: the starter button, shift lever, air-conditioning controls, drive mode select button are all set on the same place, so reach and operation are simplified and perfectly intuitive.

The designers worked with Lexus’ Takumi artisans to perfect the design relationship between the steering wheel and shift lever. The cross-section of the wheel was precisely determined to give the best grip feel and ease of operation, while the shift lever was made as compact as possible, but with snug fit in the hand and with the ideal angle. Lexus also researched the shoulder-to-fingertip distance of people around the world to define a layout that provides excellent control without disturbing the driver’s posture.

COMFORT AND QUIETNESS

For the front passenger environment, the design goal was to create the feeling of a luxurious lounge, with no intrusion from the driver’s area. This is emphasised in the cabin design by the curving line that delineates the two spaces.

The cabin finish is rich in examples of Lexus Takumi craftsmanship approach, using high-quality materials that both look and feel good. Comfort is addressed in details such as the precise front seat design, with attention to the cross-section shape of the seat, the position of the side-supporting bolsters and even the forming of concave areas to make space for the occupant’s elbows. Extensive use of materials to absorb and insulate noise and vibrations make for a quiet and calm environment.

NEW FEATURES IN THE SPIRIT OF OMOTENASHI HOSPITALITY

New features that enhance the on-board ambience reflect Lexus’ omotenashi principles of anticipating people’s needs and making them feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. These include an entry and start-up illumination sequence and personal welcome on the driver’s multi-information display. The ambient lighting system, available as standard or an option according to model grade, offers a choice of 64 colours to suit the occupants’ mood for the journey.

The new NX is the first Lexus model to be fitted with the e-latch electronic door release system. This electronic system replaces the familiar internal door handle with a push-button switch positioned next to the arm rest in the door panel. The ease of use with one smooth and simple motion is inspired by the traditional fusuma sliding paper screen room dividers in Japanese homes.

Convenience is also provided by the remote functions available to all new NX owners using the Lexus Link app, with pre-heating or cooling of the cabin before starting a journey and door locking and unlocking.

The operation of the power tailgate has also been improved so that it is both quieter and quicker – opening or closing time has been reduced by half to around four seconds.

The new NX’s status as a transformative model for Lexus with the potential for greater market penetration is further reflected in a wider range of powertrains using new and improved technologies, delivering emphatic best-in-class performance. They include Lexus’ first plug-in hybrid electric that will be a new reference point in the segment for its combination of power, efficiency and EV driving capability. The line-up also offers a new hybrid electric model, with significantly enhanced performance from fourth generation hybrid technology.

New petrol engines will significantly increase the NX’s competitive status in Russia and Eastern European markets.

NX 450h+, THE FIRST LEXUS PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC

Lexus has drawn on more than 15 years of hybrid technology expertise to produce its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the new NX 450h+. The new model will accelerate the roll-out of electrified vehicles under the Lexus Electrified strategy.

The halo electrified model in the new NX range, it features a four-cylinder 2.5-litre hybrid engine and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 18.1 kWh, the highest capacity in its class. An additional rear electric motor enables full-time all-wheel drive. The plug-in system produces 306 DIN hp and is expected to give 0-100 km/h acceleration in a little over six seconds. By contrast, estimated CO₂ emissions (WLTP combined cycle) of less than 40g/km and fuel economy of less than 3 l/100 km are set to be the best in the NX’s class.

The battery’s size and capacity and Lexus’ electrified efficiency know-how combine to deliver a class-leading EV driving range of 63 km and enable all-electric driving at speeds up to 135 km/h.

Crucially, the Lexus plug-in hybrid electric maintains high efficiency when the battery is depleted. In many competitors, operation defaults to an internal combustion engine, but in the NX 450h+ the default is to an efficient self-charging hybrid system. In these circumstances, the NX’s efficiency is expected to be as much as 20% greater than competitor systems.

Accommodating the plug-in system does not compromise the NX’s practicality – the boot has the same capacity as the hybrid model (with no space lost to powertrain components). There is also a 21-litre space beneath the deck board for tidy storage of the charging cables. Acknowledging how customers in the NX’s segment typically use their vehicle for longer journeys, the fuel tank capacity is also unaltered, at 55 litres.

NX 350h WITH FOURTH GENERATION HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

The performance and efficiency of the hybrid NX 350h have been taken to a higher level with the introduction of fourth generation Lexus hybrid technology. This provides 22% more power than system in the current model, taking output to 242 DIN hp and improving 0-100 km/h acceleration by 15% to 7.7 seconds, while at the same time giving an expected reduction in CO₂ emissions of around 10%.

The NX 350h will be available with both front and all-wheel drive. Towing capacity for the FWD model has been increased to 1,500 kg, matching the capability of the AWD version.

NEW 2.5 AND 2.4 TURBO PETROL ENGINESFOR THE RUSSIAN AND EASTERN EUROPEAN MARKETS

Two new petrol engines will strengthen the new NX’s competitiveness in Russia and Eastern European markets.

The line-up features a 2.4-litre turbocharged unit in the NX 350, developing 279 DIN hp and 430 Nm of torque. Its strength is matched by the rapid response of a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission with new, shorter ratios. A brand-new, electronically controlled permanent all-wheel drive system ensures power is effectively transmitted to the road in low-grip conditions, making use of dynamic torque distribution and pre-torque loading, adding to the NX’s dynamic capabilities. Torque allocation between the front and rear axles can be adjusted from 75:25 to 50:50 according to the driving conditions.

A new 2.5-litre unit with 199 DIN hp will position the NX 250 at the heart of its segment in the region. This, too, will offer permanent all-wheel drive and Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission.

FEEL MORE CONFIDENT:THE LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE AND NEW GA-K PLATFORM

Development of the new NX’s dynamic performance focused on delivering the Lexus Driving Signature – an ideal combination of ride comfort with steering, throttle and braking performance that is faithful to the driver’s intentions at every moment, generating confidence and a rewarding sense of connection with the car.

Central to achieving this is the use of Lexus’ Global Architecture K (GA-K) platform. This secures a lower centre of gravity (-20 mm), an increase in the front and rear tracks and an improved front/rear weight balance, all of which benefit the car’s improved handling and the driving experience. The new suspension design features front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones with trailing arms.

Beyond that, a much more rigid body has been designed using innovative lightweight materials to add strength and allow for the weight of extra bracing and reinforcements. The structure includes world-first use of 1180 MPa steel for the rocker reinforcement and 1470 MPa steel for the roof reinforcement. The front wings and bonnet are made from aluminium and a new laser peening technology has been developed, in addition to laser screw welding and the use of adhesives for joining the structure. A twin bonnet latch design has been adopted, with a transverse reinforcement between the two locks, which adds the rigidity of the bonnet to that of the overall body and suppresses vibration caused by air turbulence.

PRO-DRIVER TESTING PROGRAMME

The NX has undergone extensive testing at Lexus’ Shimoyama proving ground, with professional racing drivers included in the team. Their detailed feedback fed directly into adjustment and tuning of the car and proved valuable in helping make significant improvements to the responsiveness and feel of the steering and braking.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The E-Four electric all-wheel drive system in the new NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid electric and NX 350h hybrid has been upgraded so that the rear electric motor is always operational, providing more torque and giving the driver a greater sense of the car gripping the road.

Both the new 2.5-litre and 2.4-litre turbo petrol engines are available exclusively with AWD. On the 2.4 turbo the electronically controlled full-time system’s capability is increased with pre-torque loading and Dynamic Torque Control, giving the NX impressive performance in low-grip conditions, and stable, faster exiting from corners in on-road driving.

The new NX marks the introduction of a completely new Lexus multimedia platform that transforms performance compared to the current system, meeting customers’ priority for fast, intuitive on-board connectivity. Operation is as smooth and simple as using a tablet.

The new platform introduces smart services, including advanced cloud navigation (where the local market supports the technology) via the car’s data communication module (DCM). This provides real-time journey information and traffic event updates without using up the owner’s data plan (a four-year data package is included in the car’s purchase price). The system also provides a new ‘Hey Lexus’ assistant, which responds to natural voice command dialogues as if you are conversing with the car.

The standard system Lexus Link Connect, uses a 9.8-inch display with an anti-glare touchscreen and additional buttons for intuitive access to the most frequently used functions. It gives significantly quicker response, with computing power much faster than the previous system.

The Lexus Link Pro system uses a new 14-inch display – one of the largest in it class. It is standard on high grade models and available as an option elsewhere in the new NX range. The high-definition screen presents clear graphics in all lighting conditions, while the speed of CPU (central processing unit) is 3.6 times faster than the current system.

CHARGING CONVENIENCE FOR ALL ON BOARD

Convenience for everyone on board is addressed with four USB ports in the cabin, two front and two rear. Of these, three are USB-C standard and can be used for device charging. Where specified, the wireless phone charger has 50% faster operation, while there is now wireless connection for smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay. Wired connection using Android Auto is also provided.

LEXUS LINK

A wider range of services and functions can be accessed remotely using the Lexus Link app, for example locking or unlocking the car and activating the air conditioning system to pre-warm or cool the cabin prior to a journey – a function that’s standard across the new NX range.

Owners of the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid electric can use the app to monitor charging progress, scheduling and settings.

Lexus’ leadership in safety goes hand in hand with its commitment to making these technologies accessible to more motorists. With this aim in view, it is providing Lexus Safety System + as standard on all new NX models across all its European markets.

The latest development of Lexus Safety System + introduces new features and upgrades in the performance and functionality of others. Systems have also been tuned to operate in a way that feels more natural to the driver, and thus more reassuring, adding to the sense of driving confidence inspired by the NX’s new platform and powertrains. With this evolution, Lexus Safety System + moves to the next level as a personal driving partner.

The improvements introduced with the new NX include further expansion of the Pre-Collision System’s capability so that motorcycles and some solid objects in the car’s path, such as trees, walls and utility poles, can be detected. It also gains a new function that identifies collision risks with oncoming traffic or crossing pedestrians when making a turn at a junction. Its detection response is quicker and the ability to avoid an impact is increased with the addition of Emergency Steering Assist.

With these developments, the Pre-Collision System can recognise and help to avoid 36% more accident scenarios than previously.

Changes have been made to the Adaptive Cruise Control so that it recognises traffic cutting in in front of the NX more quickly and, in conjunction with upgrades to the Lane Trace Assist, follows a more natural line through bends. The ACC’s co-operation with the Road Sign Assist has also been expanded to respond to more signs and commands, including warning signs and STOP signs. When speed limits are recognised, the system alerts the driver to adjust the cruising speed.

EXTENDED SAFETY PACKAGE

Owners can extend their vehicle’s safety provisions and with an optional Extended Safety Package, available for higher grade NX models. In addition to the Lexus Safety System + features, this provides automatic lane change assistance. This initiates preliminary acceleration or deceleration from the pre-set cruising speed when the driver indicates to overtake or move into a lane behind a slower vehicle. The package also adds a front cross traffic alert system which uses radar monitoring to detect and warn the driver of traffic approaching from either side when emerging from a junction at low speed.

SAFE EXIT ASSIST

The new e-latch electronic entry and exit system is linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor to warn of any traffic or cyclists approaching from the rear. If it detects a risk, it will trigger a warning light and buzzer, and cancel the door unlatching.  Lexus believes this system can help prevent 95% of the accidents caused by door opening.

NEW LEXUS NX OUTLINE SPECIFICATIONS

Lexus will unveil the all-new NX online on Saturday June 12, 2021 at 5:00am CET.

Ahead of this world premiere, Lexus has released a preview image of the new SUV.

The consumer champion’s detailed study produced its findings from the real-world experiences and opinions of more than 47,000 UK motorists, covering almost 59,000 individual vehicles. Lexus secured its leading status with a fault-free report for the CT 200h hatchback and a near-perfect performance from the NX mid-size SUV. The results covered vehicles from new to three years old and three to eight years old.

The glowing report from Which? states: “Got the money for a Lexus? Do it. You might just forget what a mechanic’s waiting room looks like.”

A key factor in Lexus’s impressive performance is its self-charging hybrid technology. Which? highlights the proven durability and mechanical simplicity of the electrified system in making Lexus cars more resilient to faults. Lexus introduced hybrid to the UK premium market in 2005, since when it has constantly improved its performance and efficiency and extended it across its entire model range; today hybrids account for 99.8 per cent of its UK new car sales.

WLTP test cycle data shows 7,0 l/100km for the front-wheel drive versions, while the all-wheel drive models, featuring Lexus’s lightweight and compact E-Four system, achieve 7,2 l/100km. With various options grades available, the NX can be specified to meet customers’ preferences for hand-crafted quality, advanced technology and sporty performance. Cumulative figures up to the end of November 2019 indicate that more than 501,000 new Lexus SUVs have been sold since the RX’s European introduction in 2000.

Now in its fourth generation, the RX remains Lexus’ best-selling SUV model in the region, with almost 275,000 delivered to customers. The RX also had the distinction of being the world’s first luxury hybrid SUV, with the launch of the RX 400h in 2005.

Since that first step, Lexus has continuously improved its self-charging hybrid technology and made it fundamental to its development of new generations of SUVs, including the mid-size NX, added to the line-up in 2014 and the new, compact UX, launched earlier in 2019.

Here we focus on four stand-out features that exemplify Lexus’ intricate attention to details.

SUNROOF

ENGINEERING OPENNESS

One of the most popular options for any vehicle is the sunroof, as it allows passengers to enjoy open-air driving without having to fuss with a moving top. In the NX, the sunroof opening is larger than any of its competitors, providing a motoring experience much closer to that of a genuine convertible without any sacrifice to structural integrity.

In conventional designs, the mechanism and latch that powers the roof occupy about 30 percent of the roof opening. However, by creating the world’s first Forward Transfer Latch that moves the moon roof forward when it tilts up (not back as in conventional systems), Lexus engineers have succeeded in maximizing the opening (30 percent larger than conventional designs) without the need for creating a larger hole in the roof.

WIPER BLADES

NOTEWORTHY FORM AND FUNCTION

Unless it’s raining, no one pays much attention to a vehicle’s windshield wipers, but at Lexus, no detail goes ignored when it comes to the pursuit of perfection. The NX features new windshield wipers that not only perform better in the rain, they improve the vehicle’s overall appearance and driving character.

In contrast to conventional wiper blades, which feature four support points, the NX wipers have a single support point that eliminates the need for support arms, which in turn lowers the height of the blade. This results in reduced wind noise when driving and a clean appearance from both inside and outside the vehicle when not in use. And, a new fin design reduces lift along the entire blade ensuring excellent wiping performance during high-speed driving.

CUP HOLDER

SMALL, YET SPECIAL

With a total of six cup holders inside its spacious cabin, every one of the NX’s occupants has a place to store their drinking bottles, but unlike conventional cup holders, those for the driver and front-seat passenger are lined with elastomer, a high-friction material commonly found in the sole of athletic shoes.

Such front cup holders are specially developed for the vehicle that keeps plastic bottles from moving while the cap is being screwed on or off, thus allowing the driver to twist off the cap with only one hand. The rubber-like material does not deform when in contact with oils or grease (such as sun-bathing lotion) and is resistant to dust accumulation. It can also be removed and cleaned easily.

WOOD FINISHING

GORGEOUS DETAIL

There’s wood trim, and then there’s Shimamoku wood trim, which is a special treatment developed by Lexus where dark and light wood veneers are combined to create a truly unique and natural-looking surface.

The Shimamoku wood trim in the NX is finished with a treatment called “steel kenma”, where the wood shine is slightly taken off the finish by deliberately putting microscopic scratches onto the surface. This method, executed by Yamaha, can only be performed by a master craftsman and was previously used only on its finest grand pianos.

PS: A HIDDEN TREASURE

The tiny, twinkling studs on the knee bolsters are indeed the same as the ones on the LFA supercar.

2018 marked the 5^th consecutive year of sales growth for Lexus Europe. In only five years, Lexus sales have increased by 76% in Europe (including Eastern markets*) to reach 76,188 units in 2018 (+2% vs 2017).

Lexus’ flagship models, the LS and LC, achieved outstanding results in 2018. The new generation LS, launched in December 2017, saw sales increase by 552% in 2018 to reach 1,075 units, while sales of the luxury coupe LC climbed 17% to reach 689 units.

Lexus’ mid-size SUV, the NX, was again the brand’s best seller in Europe with 29,508 units (+6% vs. 2017), following the introduction of the renewed model in late 2017. The RX large SUV came second with 18,847 units (=), prolonging the success story of this model’s latest generation launched in 2015 and expanded with the new RX L seven-seater in 2018. Supported by a product refresh introduced in late 2017, the CT compact hatchback also achieved a strong performance in 2018, with a sales increase of 3% to reach 9,131 units.

With a record 45,675 self-charging hybrid vehicles sold in Europe in 2018, Lexus continues to lead the electrification trend in the premium market. Self-charging hybrids represent 95% of Lexus sales in Western and Central Europe.

“With the introduction of two new core models, the Lexus ES business sedan and the UX compact crossover, 2019 promises to be another growth year for Lexus in Europe, on our way to meet our goal of selling 100,000 Lexus vehicles in Europe by 2020”, said Pascal Ruch, Head of Lexus Europe.

Lexus continued growing at a steady pace in Europe in the first half of 2018. In a flat premium market, Lexus sales have increased by 7% to reach 38,543 units. Significant growth was recorded in several key markets, such as Spain (+19%), Russia (+9%), Poland (+9%), and UK (+7%).

With 24,029 self-charging hybrid vehicles sold in Europe in the first half of 2018 (+5% vs. Jan-Jun 2017), Lexus is a leading player in electrification. Self-charging hybrids represent 95% of Lexus sales in Western and Central Europe.

Lexus’ mid-size SUV, the NX, remains the brand’s best seller in Europe with 15,365 units (+15% vs. Jan-Jun 2017), capitalizing on the renewed model introduced last year. The RX large SUV came second with 8,995 units (+2%), already benefiting from the recent launch of its 7-seat version, the RX L. Supported by a product refresh introduced in the autumn of 2017, the CT compact hatchback also achieved a strong performance in the first semester of 2018, with a sales increase of 10% to reach 4,831 units.

With the recent introduction of two flagship models, the LC luxury coupe and the 5^th generation LS luxury sedan, Lexus demonstrated the brand’s passion for bold design, imaginative technologies, exhilarating performance and takumi craftsmanship at the highest level. Market response is very strong: the LC has already seduced more than 1,000 customers in Europe since start of sales one year ago, while LS sales already reached 676 units since January 2018.

Since its launch in 2014, the NX crossover has quickly established itself as a key player in the Lexus range making up more than 30% of Lexus European sales since its launch. It has been successfully attracting customers – many of them new to the brand – with its combination of luxury, cool, contemporary design, intelligent packaging and enjoyable driving dynamics. Its sales success is further supported by a choice of full hybrid and petrol-electric engines, plus front and all-wheel drive options.

Its performance has been stronger than even Lexus anticipated, breaking sales forecasts in all the world markets where it is available, including Europe. To build on that momentum and maintain the NX’s strong appeal, Lexus has initiated a package of revisions and improvements, covering exterior and interior styling, safety and equipment features. The new NX makes its European debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA).

EXTERIOR STYLING REFINEMENTS

Lexus has preserved the strong design essence of the NX that has proved so appealing to customers and has focused on details that enhance its visual impact.

The signature spindle grille has a powerful new look that aligns it more closely with Lexus’ SUV models, the RX and LX. The design features a series of horizontal bars that extend all the way down to the lower lip. Wider spacing between the bars below the central pinch-point of the spindle emphasises the car’s width and adds a sense strength to the NX’s frontal appearance. This effect is accentuated by the introduction of larger, deeply recessed lateral air intake ducts, angled to emphasise the car’s broad stance.

Reshaping of the upper part of the front bumper creates a more fluid blending of the styling into the bonnet and front doors, creating a sleeker overall shape with excellent aerodynamics.

The LED headlamp units have a new internal arrangement to accommodate the Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), part of the Lexus Safety System + package that is newly available for the NX. The look is sporty and echoes the lighting design of the new LC luxury coupe. Sequential turn indicators are also new, both at the front and rear.

At the back, changes to the lower section of the rear bumper introduce elements of the spindle grille shape, amplifying the sense of a wide stance and low centre of gravity. New rear lamp clusters have an elongated shape with a black garnish that adds emphasis to the L-shaped lenses. On the petrol models – now re-named NX 300 – there are larger, chrome-framed exhaust outlets, while larger satin chrome trims have been added on the full hybrid NX 300h to accentuate the spindle motif.

Two new 18-inch alloy wheel designs are featured for Luxury and F SPORT models, both with a striking combination of bright machined and dark metallic finishes.

INTERIOR: AN AUTHENTIC DRIVER’S ENVIRONMENT WITH ADDED CONVENIENCE

The interior of the NX benefits from detailed changes that project a sportier character and an even more luxurious feel. There is also a focus on improving the ease of use, convenience and comfort of the equipment features, faithful to Lexus’ commitment to the principles of Omotenashi hospitality.

The most prominent change is in increase in size for the central multimedia display. In the case of the Lexus Premium Navigation, the screen has grown from seven to 10.3 inches, while for the Lexus Display Audio, the increase is from seven to eight inches.

The climate control panel in the centre console has been rendered more ergonomically efficient with a number of buttons being replaced by four easy-to-operate toggle switches. These have a high tactile quality with a raised pattern of small metallic Lexus L motifs. The central analogue clock has been made larger, with a clearer face and a more pronounced outer ring. As well as being easier to read, it has a GPS control that automatically adjusts the time as you drive through different time zones.

On the centre console, the NX features the latest generation touchpad control, larger in size for easier operation. The palm rest has been reshaped to provide better wrist support and the wireless charging tray has been made wider and longer to accommodate larger smartphones. The USB ports have been moved to a handier central position and have a higher amperage for faster charging of devices. On models equipped with a head-up display, the unit is now seamlessly integrated into the instrument panel, creating a smooth surface across the top of the dashboard.

NEW INTERIOR COLOUR OPTIONS

There are new colour options for the NX, with the addition of Rich Cream and Ochre upholstery and trim, together with the established White Ochre, Black and Dark Rose. Flare Red and Mustard Yellow are both new for the NX F SPORT models.

POWER REAR DOOR

The new NX gains the convenience of a power rear door with “no-touch” opening and closing function – when you approach the vehicle with the key on your person, all you need to do to open the door is move your foot beneath the rear bumper, where the motion will be picked up by a sensor. The tailgate

can be closed with a similar action. A lock reserve button next to the tailgate grab handle automatically locks the vehicle.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

The new NX gains the benefits of Lexus Safety System +. This equips the car with a range of active safety and driver assistance features, include a Pre-Collision System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive High-beam System, Lane Departure Alert and Road Sign Assist. Intelligent Parking Sensors are also available.

LEXUS CT 200h EVOLVES WITH SPORTIER STYLING, INTERIOR UPDATES & INNOVATIVE EQUIPMENT

When Lexus debuted the CT 200h at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, it introduced the compact hybrid hatchback to the luxury automobile segment. The CT 200h has become one the brand’s best-selling hybrid model; since its launch in 2011, Lexus has sold about more than 300,000 CT 200h globally, including about 75,000 in Europe, one the largest markets for this model.

With this latest update, Lexus looks to build on the model’s strengths and evolve upon the CT 200h’s well-earned reputation for efficiency and reliability, armed with a freshened exterior that embodies its exciting-to-drive nature — without compromising its user-friendliness and fuel economy.

“The CT 200h has been refreshed and revitalized by enhancing its progressiveness. Its updated design is more emotional and sporty, making it the ideal premium hybrid compact for younger customers who enjoy spirited driving, but still care about the environment,” said Chika Kako, the Chief Engineer of the CT 200h.

EXTERIOR DESIGN: A MORE DRAMATIC PRESENCE

From its inception, the 5-door Lexus CT 200h combines an automotive packaging solution that compliments its owner’s active lifestyle with an exciting-yet-comfortable driving experience and interior surroundings offering the latest technology, upscale design and materials.

The CT 200h now features a much more modern and aggressive front fascia, thanks to a new mesh pattern for the signature spindle grille that helps elevate the model’s sophistication. Also, the integrated bumper that ran across the grille just below the Lexus emblem is gone, as are the horizontal bars within the grille. The fog light bezels are now painted metallic grey and are surrounded by an outer frame with a triangular cross-section and sharp edges. The “arrowhead” DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) have been repositioned above the single-projector headlamps to create a sense of continuity with the side character lines of the car.

Collectively, these new styling elements give the CT200h a more modern, athletic, and yet sophisticated appearance, helping this compact 5-door command a powerful presence when seen from the front.

“We have pursued a new look by reversing the position of the LED headlight unit and DRL compared to the previous model. The result is a look that’s more aggressive than before. Moreover, the “L” motif of the DRL strengthens the Lexus signature,” said Tetsuo Miki, the Chief Designer of the CT 200h.

At the rear of the car are new “L”-signature shaped taillights that give the CT 200h a sportier, wider appearance. New wider rear combination taillights have been changed to an all-LED configuration, with brightly illuminating LED turn signals at the bottom of the assembly, strengthening the “L”-signature look, as well as making the new CT more visible from behind. The upper and lower lines of the light-emitting section of the taillights thicken as they curve outwards, accentuating the width of the taillights and providing the rear end with a strong, stable presence. The back door garnish — enveloping the Lexus badge between the rear glass and the taillights — adds some athletic appeal to the vehicle’s already sporty rear-end. Also, the lower part of the rear bumper is now metallic silver and black, and reshaped to enhance the vehicle’s aggressive appearance, while the rear reflector bezels have been painted metallic grey to match the fog light surrounds up front.

Spicing up the CT 200h’s profile are sportier wheels—from the base 15-in. pieces to the F SPORT’s 17-in. dark metallic alloys. Of note is the new ten-spoke 16-in. wheel that features a machined finish and dark metallic paint.

FRESH INTERIOR UPDATES

One peek inside the cabin, and it is easy to see that the CT 200h offers among the finest interiors in its class, thanks to high-quality materials, rich surface textures and an attractive form-follows-function overall styling philosophy.

A Lexus Navigation System that features a larger 10.3-in. wide display screen (versus the previous-generation’s 7-in. monitor) is newly available.

An expanded interior colour palette is available, featuring new combinations including striking two-tone smooth leather; a mix of fabric and long-wearing synthetic leather, and new all-fabric upholstery. A total of nine different ornamentation choices are available.

F SPORT

The CT 200h F SPORT receives significant design changes for 2018 that include black metallic paint and an updated mesh pattern for the spindle grille exclusive to the F SPORT. The new mesh pattern has also been added as a backdrop for both the fog light inserts and surrounds to match. This model receives high-grade headlights that house a single projector high/low-beam headlamp. Also, exclusive to the F SPORT is jet black plating used on the upper and lower front grille moulding and a metallic black centre lower trim garnish at the rear of the vehicle.

“The F SPORT attracts younger customers, so we’ve strengthened the vehicle’s exclusive black items to reinforce its sporty nature, namely the rear bezel and the rear lower garnish. The rear bezel has the same mesh design as the front grille, and the lower garnish is painted metallic black here while the normal grade color is silver,” the CT 200h Chief Designer Miki said.

For 2018, the CT 200h will offer new two-tone exterior paint schemes and distinctive new colours for the F SPORT model: Lava Orange CS (Crystal Sunshine) and Heat Blue CL (Contrast Layering).

Inside the cabin, the F SPORT boasts new exclusive interior combinations including two-tone leather, fabric a synthetic leather. An elegant Naguri ornamentation, which showcases high levels of Takumi craftsmanship, is exclusively available in the F SPORT.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

Another welcome addition to the updated Lexus CT 200h is the availability of the Lexus Safety System + that offers enhanced safety with advanced technologies such as Pre-Collision System (PCS), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering wheel control function, Automatic High Beam (AHB) headlights, and Road Sign Assist (RSA).

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + NOW AVAILABLE ON NX AND CT

The benefits of Lexus’ advanced safety technologies are being extended deeper into its model range with the Lexus Safety System + suite of active safety and driver assistance features being made available on both the new NX and CT model ranges.

This comprehensive upgrade of the cars’ safety provisions means that almost all new Lexus models sold in Europe will now benefit from Lexus Safety System +. This is true to Lexus’ “democratisation” strategy to make these safety technologies available to a greater number of customers, at an affordable price. It also reflects the brand’s commitment to improving road safety for all – driver, vehicle occupants, pedestrians and other road users alike – with ultimate aim of eliminating traffic accidents.

The Lexus Safety System + introduced to the new NX and CT specifications includes features which monitor the car’s surroundings and the driver’s responses, recognising certain collision risks and providing support to help prevent a collision happening, or lessening the consequences should an impact be unavoidable.

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM

Lexus’ Pre-Collision system (PCS) can help the driver avoid a collision, or lessen the consequences of an impact, even at high speed.

PCS uses a millimetre-wave radar and camera mounted on the front of the car to scan the road ahead to detect obstacles or hazards. It functions both when driving straight ahead and when cornering. It also computes data collected from sensors around the car monitoring factors such as vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs. This information helps the PCS determine the risk of a rear-end collision with a vehicle ahead.

If it calculates a high risk of an impact, it will trigger a warning buzzer and light up a “BRAKE” command in the multi-information display to alert the driver to take action. The moment the brake pedal is pressed, the system initiates a Pre-Collision Brake to provide optimum braking force. This can achieve deceleration of up to 40km/h, slowing the vehicle to reduce the severity of any impact, or potentially bringing the car to a stop before an impact occurs.

If the driver fails to respond to the alerts and does not apply the brakes, the Pre-Collision Brake will automatically deploy to reduce the vehicle’s speed.

PCS also provides a pedestrian protection function. If a pedestrian is detected in the vehicle’s path, automatic braking will be activated. This operates when the Lexus is travelling at between 10 and 80km/h.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

The PCS’ radar is also used to provide Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, working down to very low speeds and standstill. Once the way ahead is clear, the ACC will automatically and smoothly accelerate the vehicle back to its pre-selected cruising speed. If the car has been brought to a halt, the driver simply has to press the accelerator briefly for the system to be reactivated.

The ACC can operate in two modes: constant speed control, like a conventional cruise control system, or vehicle-to-vehicle distance control. With the latter mode, the driver can set long, medium or short vehicle-to-vehicle distances, according to preference or traffic conditions. The control settings selected are shown on the multi-information display.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT

Lane Departure Alert uses the PCS camera, mounted on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror, to track the vehicle’s course between lane markings painted on the road surface. If it detects that car is moving out of its lane without the turn indicators being used, it will light up a warning on the multi-information display and sound a buzzer, prompting the driver to steer back to the correct path. On the new NX, the driver will also experience haptic feedback through the steering wheel as an additional warning.

ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM

An adjustable LED Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) prevents the NX from dazzling other road users. Eleven independent LED chips in each headlight are enabled/disabled for precise control of the illuminated and non-illuminated areas. This means the driver can enjoy maximum, safe use of high beam lighting, improving their field of vision without the risk of dazzling other road users.¹

ROAD SIGN ASSIST

Road Sign Assist recognises traffic signs using the windscreen-mounted camera, repeating the information on the multi-information display. This helps prevent the risk of the driver failing to notice important warnings or commands on major routes, including speed limits and lane closures. The system can detect signs that are designed according to the international standards of the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals.

LEXUS PRESENTS ITS VISION FOR FUTURE SAFETY WITH THE LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + A IN THE ALL-NEW LS FLAGSHIP SEDAN

Lexus’ will take safety technologies to an even higher level in its all-new LS sedan, scheduled for launch at the end of 2017. This flagship model will be the first Lexus to benefit from further improvements to the functions of Lexus Safety System +, together with the introduction of even more sophisticated driving assistance and advanced pre-collision support in Lexus Safety System + A.

The Lexus Safety System + A package includes Active Steering Assist, a world-first technology that can help prevent collisions that cannot be avoided through automatic braking alone, and Front Cross Traffic Alert, which is designed to warn the driver of the possibility of collisions with vehicles approaching from either side at road intersections. In addition, Lexus CoDrive can assist the driver in staying in lane. Together, these features and others can deliver a high level of safe driving support.

The new LS is also equipped with other technologies for safer and more secure driving in a wide range of situations. The support they provide has been designed to be clear and intuitive, for example in the use of a large, colour head-up display (HUD) and multi-information display to present status notifications and information on vehicle behaviour when safety features are being deployed.

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM WITH PEDESTRIAN ALERT AND ACTIVE STEERING ASSIST

The new LS is the first Lexus model to be equipped with a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Alert and Active Steering Assist, in addition to its established functions. This is a world-first technology that can pinpoint the location of a pedestrian and automatically control the car’s steering and braking.

With Pedestrian Alert, if there is a possibility of the vehicle colliding with a pedestrian ahead, the position of the pedestrian is shown in an animated graphic on the head-up display, contributing to the driver’s intuitive recognition of the situation. Pre-Collision System determines when there is a high risk of a collision with a pedestrian in the lane of travel, or with a continuous structure, such as a guardrail. If it calculates that that brake control alone will be insufficient to avoid a collision, steering assistance is provided, in addition to a driver alert and braking. When Active Steering Assist is deployed, the car will only move within a clearly marked lane. The system automatically checks for any vehicles in the car’s blind spots, including motorcycles.

LEXUS CODRIVE ADVANCED DRIVING ASSIST TECHNOLOGY

Lexus CoDrive adds Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to the functions of the Adaptive Cruise Control to provide steering support in line with the driver’s intentions. It can significantly reduce the burden on the driver by providing seamless driving support on roads with many bends, or in traffic jams. It is co-ordinated with the head-up and multi-information displays to give the driver clear notification of the status of the support being provided.

LANE TRACING ASSIST

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) provides lane-keeping support by way of steering control when Adaptive Cruise Control is in operation. As well as camera detection of lane markings, the system will trace the path of the vehicle ahead to enable assistance even when lines cannot be recognised, for example when driving in low-speed congestion, when there is little space between vehicles.

TWO-STAGE ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM

The two-stage Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) provides optimal lighting by way of separate on/off control of the two rows of LEDs – eight upper and 16 lower – in each headlight. This enables finer control of light strength and distance compared to the current LED-based AHS. This improves night-time visibility by allowing more frequent driving with the headlights on high beam, without dazzling preceding or oncoming vehicles.

FRONT CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT

Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) is designed to help prevent collisions at intersections by detecting approaching vehicles. Using side-looking radars, the advanced system alerts driver to a vehicle approaching an intersection ahead from either side. If the driver proceeds, regardless of there being another vehicle approaching from left or right, warnings are given by a buzzer and on the LS’ multi-information display.

ROAD SIGN ASSIST

The Road Sign Assist (RSA) in the new LS makes use of navigation maps as well as a camera to acquire road sign information, which it then presents on the vehicle’s head-up and multi-information displays, reducing the risk of the driver failing to recognise signs and encouraging safe driving.

IMPROVEMENTS TO LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + FUNCTIONS

Lexus has further evolved the performance of the PCS, LDA and Adaptive Cruise Control in Lexus Safety System +, featured in combination with Lexus Safety System + A in the new LS.

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM

The improved Pre-Collision System (PCS) can detect cyclists and night-time pedestrians and has improved deceleration performance during automatic braking. For example it can slow the vehicle by as much as 60km/h when a pedestrian is detected, thus improving its collision prevention performance.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT

As well as detecting lane markings on the road surface, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) will also be able to recognise the boundaries between asphalt and other elements, such as grass, dirt or kerbstones, thanks to advances in its recognition capability. This will allow it to perform its functions of alerting the driver and adjusting steering feedback and torque to encourage a return to the correct line, even on roads without line markings.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

The Adaptive Cruise Control achieves outstanding basic recognition performance with wide-angle detection, using a new millimetre-wave radar and a camera with a wider forward recognition range. The system also helps make driving more comfortable, with smooth acceleration at start-up and during following, departure and acceleration, for a sense of security for occupants. It also gives smooth deceleration in the case of a rapid change in in speed.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVE SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

The new LS will further benefit from additional active safety technologies that will help protect the vehicle and occupants by alerting the driver to collision risks when parking and providing a view of the area immediately around the vehicle when manoeuvring or cornering.

PARKING SUPPORT BRAKE

The LS’s low-speed braking support systems have been integrated in a single package, with the aim of reducing damage when parking, when the driver needs to take account of nearby moving vehicles and pedestrians and stationary objects such as walls and street furniture. The world’s first rear pedestrian support brake has been added to the existing Intelligent Parking Sensors and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking. This detects pedestrians behind the vehicle using a rear camera; if there is a risk of a collision, alerts and brake control are triggered.

PANORAMIC VIEW MONITOR WITH SIDE CLEARANCE AND CORNERING VIEW FUNCTIONS

Side clearance view and cornering view functions have been added to the Panoramic View Monitor, making it easier for the driver to determine the safe space around the vehicle. Side clearance view produces an image on the LS’s display monitor that shows the area in front of the car as if seen from a high position above the rear of the vehicle, giving the driver better sight of the space on each side of the car, for example when passing another car on a narrow road. When side clearance view is operating, cornering view automatically produces an image of the vehicle as seen from the rear at an angle in line with the car’s direction when moving through a bend or turn. These help the driver confirm left or right turns can be made safely on narrow roads and avoid driving up onto the kerb.

¹AHS is available across Lexus range except the CT model, which is equipped with Automatic High Beam (AHB) headlight system, which maximises night-time visibility by automatically switching to low beam when it detects the lights of oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead.

LEXUS PIONEERS A RADICAL NEW APPROACH TO THE PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE 2017 FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

In line with its pioneering spirit, Lexus introduces a radical new way of communicating news and information to the media at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

Its new, disruptive approach is another example of how Lexus is applying the human-centred principles of Omotenashi – the best traditions of Japanese hospitality – to deliver the highest standards of service. In this case, understanding and anticipating the needs of journalists and broadcasters has inspired a flexible news-sharing method that makes imaginative and practical use of augmented reality technology.

This means there will be no fixed time for a Lexus press conference during the busy press day schedule. Instead, media representatives can call at the Lexus booth at a time that suits them, equip themselves with a pair of augmented reality glasses (Microsoft HoloLens) and make a “guided tour” of the stand with commentaries and presentations by Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, and Lexus product specialists.

Pioneering this “press conference on demand”, Lexus believes it will be effective in communicating its key messages to the media in an engaging, thorough and time-efficient fashion.

The concept and its design are fully aligned with Lexus’ core values of Omotenashi customer service and the pioneering use of imaginative technologies. These values are fundamental not only to all new Lexus vehicles, but also to the way in which it is developing its business as a highly innovative, multi-dimensional lifestyle brand, reaching beyond the luxury automotive sphere.

HOW THE CONCEPT WORKS

Accredited journalists are able to call at the Lexus stand at any time during the press days. After introducing themselves at the welcome desk, they will be given a pair of augmented reality glasses – the Microsoft HoloLens.

A virtual reality host will then guide them around the stand, viewing the exhibits while seeing and hearing speeches and insights from virtual speakers, together with information graphics, 3D animations and video content. The effect is similar to a car’s head-up display, in which information is projected on the windscreen within the driver’s field of vision.

The content, including the speeches by Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, and Lexus product specialists, is the same for each user. It includes a welcome from the communications team, information on the new CT and NX models, an update on Lexus’ business performance and a look ahead to what is coming next for the brand. In all, the presentation takes just 10 minutes.

EUROPEAN PREMIERES FOR THE NEW LEXUS NX AND REFRESHED CT

Lexus will host two European product premieres at the upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show, presenting the new NX luxury compact crossover and the refreshed CT premium compact hatchback.

As a nimble urban crossover, the NX has enjoyed rapid success since its launch three years ago. The appeal of its expressive styling, spacious packaging, comfort, safety and driving dynamics have helped the model make a significant contribution to Lexus’ global sales growth. It is now poised to exceed customer expectations with updated exterior styling, interior enhancements and equipment features with improved convenience and functionality.

Lexus introduced the compact hybrid hatchback to the luxury car market with the debut of the CT 200h at the 2010 Geneva motor show. With this latest update, the model has undergone evolutionary changes with sportier styling, an enhanced cabin and new equipment features. These have been designed to build on the model’s established strengths and add to its reputation for efficiency, reliability and driver-appeal.

LEXUS BRAND ICONS ON DISPLAY

The new NX and refreshed CT will share the spotlight with Lexus’ two new flagship models: the all-new LS flagship sedan and LC luxury coupe. Lexus is – again – coming with great news to the Paris Motor Show, and I’m extremely happy to stand in front of you today!

If we look back over the last couple of years, Lexus underwent a tremendous change.

We have fully rejuvenated our line-up and added exciting new models such as NX and RC, as well as a growing range of performance cars including the RC F and the GS F.

Today, we offer the broadest line-up of premium hybrid vehicles in the industry - no less than 10 models globally! We sell more premium hybrid vehicles than any other manufacturer, by far!

And our region leads: no less than 98% of Lexus sales in Western Europe are hybrids.

Our design has become much bolder, our cars more emotional, and this, while retaining Lexus’ ultimate craftsmanship and quality credentials.

And we are very pleased to see that our efforts are met with enthusiast consumer response on the global market. In Europe for instance, the home of the premium car market, with probably the most demanding customers, Lexus has a clear lead in many customer satisfaction surveys.

This also results in a sustained sales momentum, with double-digit year-on-year sales growth. We are well on our way to exceed our target of 70 thousand sales in Europe this year, a new record for our brand.

But Lexus transformation is only starting to unfold and there’s much more to come in the near future to establish Lexus as a truly global luxury lifestyle brand.

The LC, our new flagship coupe, which we revealed earlier this year, is the symbol of this journey. LC is pure emotion, both from design and driving perspectives, supported by innovative technologies.

With LC, we introduce our next generation performance hybrid system: the Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System. This new powertrain brings more power, greater acceleration higher efficiency, and last but certainly not least, more fun to drive.

LC is coming on the market next year, but this summer we already took it to an extensive tour in Europe, from the Nürburgring to Goodwood, from Madrid to Amsterdam, to connect with customers and car enthusiasts. We wanted to hear their first-hand feedback, and their response was fantastic!

Our next product launch is just around the corner and I am very happy to present it today, for the first time in Europe: the new Lexus IS sports sedan.

The IS is one of Lexus’ most successful models ever. Since the launch of the first generation, back in 1999, we have delivered more than one million units to consumers worldwide.

The new IS features revised exterior styling, an even more refined cabin and enhanced equipment such as a multimedia screen up to 10.3 inches.

Also, we have revised suspensions and steering for an even better dynamic experience, and the new IS now includes our benchmark package of active safety technologies, the Lexus Safety System +.

You can expect the new IS in Lexus showrooms by January next year.

Now… time to look deeper into the future! And I’m referring to the vehicle hidden behind this screen, which you will discover in a few moments.

This vehicle is all about anticipation but it is also rooted in Lexus’ unparalleled expertise in the SUV market.

In the 90’s Lexus pioneered the premium SUV world with the RX and the LX, for the first time in the industry combining off-road capabilities with premium luxury. Then in 2004, we launched the RX hybrid, the first premium hybrid SUV on the market.

In 2014 we further expanded our line-up with NX demonstrating that ‘Utility’ can be combined with a unique, striking design personality. And NX is already our best-seller in Europe!

From the outset our vision for SUVs was based on luxury and quality, then expanded to innovative hybrid technology and striking design.

Now we are ready for the next chapter - even bolder, even more emotional and unique on the market.

The dynamic compact SUV packaging is designed to appeal to progressive, urban customers who live in an ever-connected environment.

The UX Concept delivers an immersive driver experience with futuristic 3D holographic displays and other innovative electronic features. The seat design is inspired by Lexus’ Kinetic Seat Concept … a ground breaking technology that stimulates the drivers’ senses by involving the whole body in the driving experience.

The UX Concept showcases a modern expression of Lexus’ ultimate craftsmanship … married with hi-tech manufacturing techniques.>

This is what we call a design statement! It’s clearly a Lexus, you can recognize all our signature elements: the spindle grille, the L-shaped lights, the striking lines… but in an entirely new execution, and one that will turn heads.

And by the way, the UX Concept was conceived here in France, in ED2, our European Design Centre. Our design philosophy has Japanese roots, but it is also truly global in its expression.

As highlighted by this new concept, Lexus always seeks to anticipate. We are passionate about cars … about design, quality, driving emotions, and not to forget … customer experience. In the coming months and years, we will work even harder to transmit our passion to consumers worldwide.

Following the success of the Lexus CT and IS Sport editions, the brand's mid-size Crossover, the NX, will also be equipped with the Sport package.

Available on the NX 300h and NX 200t models, the Sport edition includes exclusive exterior and interior visual design features, while the F SPORT grade additionally provides dynamic enhancements and more aggressive styling.

The NX Sport features Black alloy 18’’ wheels, Black capped door mirrors, and a Black finish to the spindle grille and its frame.

The NX Sport interior is finished with an exclusive choice of fabric or synthetic leather seats, both available in Black and Garnett with silver inserts.

Exclusive to the Business and Comfort grades, the Sport edition aims at increasing the accessibility of the NX’s sporting design enhancements.

Lexus has no peers when it comes to reliability, being the only manufacturer accorded a top five-star rating in the 2016 Which? Car Survey.

The survey results were calculated from the real-world ownership experiences of almost 60,000 people, taking into account issues such breakdowns, repair costs, common faults and the number of days vehicles have had to be taken off the road to correct problems.

Lexus achieved strong results across the board in the Which? guide to the best new and used buys in different market categories. The NX crossover was named the best compact SUV on the new car market, with a five-star reliability rating, while the second and third generation RX models were revealed as the two best large SUVs for used vehicle customers. The IS and GS saloons also achieved top-four placings in the large and luxury car categories, while the CT 200h hatchback was given a “best buy” recommendation among new medium-size models.

Which? is not alone in finding that Lexus provides lasting quality and satisfaction, new or old. This year’s Auto Express Driver Power survey was an unprecedented success for Lexus, with models claiming first, second and three other places in the top 10, and Autocar declaring the IS executive sports saloon its Used Car of the Year.

London, United Kingdom - Lexus has achieved unprecedented success in Auto Express’s search for the UK’s most reliable cars. The results of the 2016 Driver Power survey see the third generation RX luxury SUV achieving the highest rating, narrowly ahead of the current IS saloon.

A top-three clean-sweep was only prevented by the achievement of the Toyota Land Cruiser in third place, shading out the current Lexus GS saloon. To complete the emphatic performance, the NX crossover and CT premium hatchback rounded off the survey’s top 10 models.

In fact every Lexus model eligible for the survey is featured. The absence of the RC coupe (only recently launched) and the LS limousine is that they have not achieved the sales volumes required for inclusion.

Auto Express declared Lexus has “smashed” the survey, which brings together the real-world experiences and opinions of almost 50,000 motorists. Announcing the results, it said: “A new Lexus RX was launched in 2015, but given the Japanese marque’s formidable performance, who would bet against the new version repeating the success of its predecessor, which tops our reliability chart this year.”

Turning to the IS, it describes how the car “doesn’t take any prisoners when it comes to reliability,” an area where it has “forged a reputation for excellence”. The GS is praised for its “luxuriously appointed and high-spec’ interior” and the NX is recognised for adding excellent reliability to the qualities that it shares with its larger RX sister model.

Ewan Shepherd, Lexus Director, said: “We strive to give our customers complete peace of mind when it comes to being able to rely on their car, day in, day out. Their level of satisfaction is clearly communicated in this extraordinary survey result, vindicating everything we do to deliver the highest quality in all our models.

Lexus also performed strongly in other Driver Power categories, notably posting a one-two-three for build quality with the NX and second and third generation RX models. In the “best car to own” results, which take in performance across all survey criteria, Lexus claimed four of the top 10 places with the IS (the top-rated car in 2015) in fourth, GS in fifth, third generation RX in sixth and second generation RX in 10th.

And if you want to know which car has the comfiest seats, the survey reveals that honour, too, goes to the third generation Lexus RX.

Lexus launched the industry’s first full hybrid premium SUV, the RX 400h, in April 2005. Gradually, the brand expanded its hybrid line-up by launching the first full hybrid premium sedan, the GS 450h, in 2006, followed by the most powerful luxury hybrid sedan, the LS 600h in 2007, the HS 250h in 2009 and the first luxury hybrid compact, the CT 200h, in 2011. The ES 300h was launched in 2012, then the IS 300h and the GS 300h in 2013, and the first luxury mid-sized crossover, the NX 300h, in 2014. The first luxury hybrid sports coupe, the RC 300h, was launched globally at the end of 2015. Today, Lexus sells 10 hybrid models and is the luxury brand with the widest hybrid line-up.

Europe is the largest hybrid market worldwide for Lexus. In 2015, 64% of all Lexus cars sold in Europe were hybrid, a proportion that rises to 95% in Western Europe. Lexus is by far the largest hybrid premium brand in Europe, with a market share of over 45%, or 77% if plug-ins are excluded.

Earlier this year, Lexus premiered its latest full hybrid model, the LC 500h, which features a new generation performance full hybrid technology called Multi Stage Hybrid System (MSHS). The MSHS expands further the hybrid advantages by delivering more power, greater acceleration and traction and higher efficiency. The LC 500h will be available for sale in the spring of 2017.

Brussels, Belgium - Lexus Europe sold 18,058 vehicles in the first three months of 2016, an increase of 16% compared to the first quarter of 2015, in a premium market which increased at a slower pace (+10%).

This quarter marked the start of sales of the all-new, fourth generation RX, which recorded a 114% sales increase over Q1 2015 to reach 4,024 units. Overall, NX remained the best seller among the Lexus range, with 6,315 units sold, sustaining the level of sales reached in Q1 2015 in full launch period.

Also launched in Eastern markets at the end of 2015, the new LX achieved an impressive 165% sales growth to reach 1,456 units, while sales of the revised ES increased by 19% to 475 units.

Hybrid sales continued to attract more customers, reaching 12,141 units (+14%) or about two-thirds of Lexus sales, led by NX 300h (4,672 units), CT 200h (2,445 units) and RX 450h (2,362 units).

Last year also marked the roll-out of a line-up of models equipped with Lexus’ new 2.0L turbo engine: NX 200t, RX 200t, GS 200t, IS 200t and RC 200t. In total, these models already represented 12% of Lexus sales during the first quarter of 2016, with Russia and Poland being the largest markets.

There was substantial sales growth in all parts of the region managed by Lexus Europe, with increases in excess of 20% in several markets including France, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Israel, Ukraine as well as Russia (+23%) – the latter despite challenging market conditions (premium market down 14% during the quarter).

Brussels, Belgium - Sales in Europe increased 20 percent to approximately 64,000 vehicles, the most for a major market in percentage terms; including a 31 percent gain in Western Europe. Sales in China increased to approximately 88,500 vehicles, a 14 percent increase; and North America sales increased to approximately 368,000 vehicles, a 12 percent gain. Accentuating its luxury hybrid leadership, with almost 1 million hybrid Lexus vehicles sold to date, hybrid sales globally were approximately 149,000 vehicles and accounted for 23 percent of sales.

Initiatives

The first INTERSECT BY LEXUS luxury brand experience space outside Japan opened in Dubai, UAE. This new two story space is located in the heart of the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC).

Lexus named the first automaker winner ofthe Milano Design Award for Best Entertainingfor its "Lexus – A Journey of the Senses" exhibit at Milan Design Week, the world's largest design exhibition. Additionally, the first-ever Lexus Design Award Grand Prix winner was announced.

The third Lexus Short Films Series winners announced at the Napa Valley Film Festival. In 2013, Lexus Short Films was launched with the goal of supporting and nurturing a new generation of emerging filmmakers.

Lexus partnered with leading super conductive technology experts to create one of the most advanced Hoverboards ever. The Lexus Hoverboard is part of the global ‘Amazing in Motion’ campaign.

Lexus Safety System +, a portfolio of active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds package began rolling out in Europe, Japan and North America.

Honors

Lexus named the Luxury Brand with the Best Resale Value in Kelley Blue Book’s 2016 Best Resale Value Awards. This is the fifth year in a row Lexus has been named the luxury brand with the best projected retained value through the initial five-year ownership. Six 2016 Lexus models were honored with Best Resale Value for their perspective vehicle categories: RC 200t/RC 300/RC 350, ES 300h, GS 200t/GS 350, RX 450h, GX 460, and LX 570.

The NX 200t was awarded ‘Best Compact Premium SUV’ at the 2015 Middle East Car of the Year Awards (MECOTY).

CT was the overall winner in the Car Environmental List, an annual evaluation by the Traffic Association Germany (VCD).

Lexus topped the largest car satisfaction surveys, Autoindex, in Sweden and Norway, for the fourth time.

Lexus dominated the Auto Express Driver Power 2015 survey, receiving six awards including those for best manufacturer and – for the IS sedan – best car. The IS also took the top spot in the best compact executive car category and was the highest­ rated model for ease of driving. The NX was named best car for build quality within its first six months on the road in the UK.

The independent German institute for environmental research ‘Ökotrend’ (Ecological Trend) and the car magazine ‘Auto Test’ recognized the GS 300h as the most ecological car in the premium middle class. The evaluation of the vehicle’s environmental performance was conducted based on its fuel consumption and emissions for its entire life cycle, including production, logistics and recycling.

RX achieved the best-ever pedestrian protection score out of all large SUVs ever tested by Euro NCAP and achieves a 5 –Star rating.

CT , ES, RC, and NX, earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+, IIHS’s highest recognition for crashworthiness and front crash prevention.

Lexus ranked highest in vehicle dependability among all nameplates for a fourth consecutive year in the 2015 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). The ES ranked highest in the Compact Premium Car segment and the GX was awarded among Midsize Premium SUVs. The ES was the highest ranked model among all vehicles in the study.

True to its mission of "creating amazing" and inspired by the craftsmanship that goes into every vehicle it makes, Lexus commissioned a team of ice sculpture specialists to explore how ice could be used in place of conventional alloy metal and rubber.

After three months' research, design and testing, the finished wheels were fitted to a Lexus NX for the ultimate ice drive. The car itself was deep-frozen, stored for five days at -30°C (it started first time) before being driven off down a London road.

The addition of in-wheel LED lighting added an extra dramatic dimension to the cutting-edge contemporary styling of the NX.

The project was undertaken by Hamilton Ice Sculptors, a London-based business established for more than 35 years with world-leading experience in producing innovative and large-scale works. For the Lexus commission — the first of its kind — genuine NX wheels and tyres were laser scanned and replicated using computer design and numerical control techniques. The result was an unprecedented fusing of art and engineering.

Just as the skills of Lexus's famous takumi craftspeople are used to achieve the highest quality, the human hand and eye were fundamental to the success of the project. Four sculptors worked for 36 hours to produce each wheel. The millimetre-perfect finish was achieved with hand-crafting, using Japanese steel chisels and shaping tools. Even the tread patterns on the tyres were faithfully reproduced.

The ice was made from softened water taken from a moving flow to ensure it was perfectly clear when taken from the freezer. Acrylic inserts were added to ensure the wheels could take the load of the NX.

Projects such as our hoverboard, the origami-inspired cardboard car and now a dazzling set of fully functioning ice wheels, demonstrate how we use advanced technologies and the best craftsmanship traditions to achieve outstanding results. That's not just for eye-catching one-off projects, but for the cars we deliver to our customers, too."

#NXontrack - Lexus Europe, today unveiled an innovative film which sees global entrepreneur and musician, will.i.am challenged to create a remix of one of his most iconic tracks, #thatPOWER in a breath-taking music, art and technology spectacular.

Played out on a disused runway lined with more than 350 projected mapped motion and audio sensitive lasers and lights, the front-man battles against speed and rhythm to conduct and navigate a trio of striking Lexus NX's, hitting the laser 'targets' at the correct tempo to synchronise with his smash hit.

The unprecedented live event, shot in one night last week, sees the musician's skills put to the test as he joins three stunt drivers including 2013 Blockbuster, Rush frontman, Niki Faulkner, to take on the colossal 'sound-road', race against rhythm and successfully complete the challenge in the limited hours of darkness available before the sun rise.

Speaking about the video, will.i.am said ''Working with the stunt guys to hit the laser targets in time with the music wasn't easy to get right but the result was awesome. The combination of technology, design and music in this project was out of this world."

A team of sixty-five technicians worked for over seven days to build the rigging for the lights and motion sensitive lasers, designed by world-renowned light artists, Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), who has previously worked with the likes of Coldplay and U2.

MLF Creative Director, Barnaby Steel, said: "Together with Lexus, we've created a huge musical game with three stunt drivers as the players and will.i.am as the conductor. Music is brought to life when the cars hit beams of light that are motion sensitive at the correct time and rhythm. It's basically like a giant laser harp with cars instead of fingers. The challenge for will.i.am and the drivers was to navigate the light points on tempo. When they fell off beat and triggered notes off tempo, the system would have to restart."

Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, said: "We're projecting that the NX will represent one third of all Lexus sales across Europe this year, so it feels only right that we've created something as bold as this event with will.i.am — something that truly embodies our brand philosophy of Amazing in Motion!"

The F SPORT stands out from the rest of the NX model range through unique styling modifications, exclusive colour schemes and dynamic upgrades.

F SPORT grille and exterior

The mesh grille of Lexus performance models combines with a metallic coated lower bumper moulding to set the NX F SPORT apart. The large spindle aperture is graded from bottom to top to express the outline of the distinctive F SPORT motif. The unique frontal appearance of the NX F SPORT is further accentuated by the use of a sporting black coating on the door mirrors and the signature F SPORT emblem on the front quarter panel beneath the A-pillar.

A Lexus-first sports wheel offers the choice of two wheel colours and tyre sizes. A 225/60/18 10-spoke alloy combines black paint on the lateral edges with a luminous machine-brushed finish. A second 10-spoke wheel and tyre combination is a lower profile 235/55/18 with an exclusive dark metallic finish.

F SPORT-exclusive colour and interior

On board, the meter, steering wheel, gear shift, sport seats, pedals, gear shift, leather pad for passenger instrument panel and Dark Rose interior colour are all exclusive to F SPORT models.

Injection-moulded quilted seats hug the occupant's body to give improved support and lateral holding performance. Perforated non-slip aluminium pedals and a driver's foot brace provide practical assistance to agile diving. And the steering wheel leather is also perforated to provide even greater feel during performance driving.

The wheel carries the F SPORT emblem in its lower quadrant. The brushed metallic gear shift lever and the scuff plate ornamentation beneath the door are also exclusive to F SPORT models.

Performance dampers

The NX F SPORT is exclusively equipped with front and rear suspension performance dampers, enhancing rigidity and decreasing vibration to optimise handling stability.

G-sensor and boost meter

The NX F SPORT features a Lexus-first 'G-Monitor' in its full-colour Multi Information Display (MID).

On the G-Monitor screen, a G-ball moves in accordance with the vehicle's lateral and longitudinal forces. The MID displays the peak force in each direction. Additional display bars also indicate the steering angle, throttle opening angle and hydraulic brake pressure.

In turbocharged NX F SPORT models, the MID provides a Lexus-first turbo-boost meter with the colour band changing in the high boost pressure range. The analogue displays show oil temperature and pressure.
