That is exactly what the designers of the new Lexus LS luxury sedan have aimed to achieve. They have embraced the qualities of both Takumi craftsmanship and Omotenashi, the finest traditions of Japanese hospitality, to produce the most comfortable and adaptable seats yet fitted to a Lexus car.</p>

<p>In the spirit of Omotenashi, Lexus required that people travelling in the LS should enjoy the best possible comfort and convenience.</p>

<p>This called for a new seat design that allows the finest level of adjustment in 28 different ways, ensuring everyone can find their ideal position.</p>

<p>The 28-way power adjustable front seat surpasses the adjustability of any other vehicle while also fitting to all body types, physiques and preferences. The side supports provide excellent holding ability, the cushion stabilizes the pelvis and posture, and shoulder supports contribute to excellent steering feel, providing a new value of driving and ride comfort.</p><p>Seats with massage functions have been available for a while, but Lexus sought to make this function more effective than ever before by consulting expert Japanese Shiatsu masseurs on how much pressure should be applied, to which parts of the occupant&rsquo;s body, and in which order.</p><p>Using these insights, air bladders have been integrated into the seatbacks and cushions to apply pressure to the passenger&rsquo;s back and lower hip area to promote both physical and emotional relaxation.</p><p>Such has been the level of detail and care invested in this project, passengers can choose from no fewer than seven different massage programmes, each progressing through a 15-minute cycle.</p><p>A warming function integrated in the rear seat is a world&rsquo;s first - with the two dedicated heaters&mdash;located in the shoulder and lower back parts of the seat&mdash;warm these specific areas without warming a person&rsquo;s entire body.</p><p>The result is an unprecedented opportunity to make travelling by car an exceptionally relaxing experience.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[lexus,2012 LS,2018 ls]]></category>

That&rsquo;s why car manufacturers continue to use it as a signal of the quality the vehicles they make.</p>

<p>For Lexus it is not simply a matter of applying pieces of wooden trim. For its new LS flagship sedan it has explored at new ways of working with veneers to produce unique designs that distinguish the car from any other, creating a new aesthetic that discerning owners will value.</p>

<p>It has carefully selected the ideal raw materials and applied the skills of its Takumi master craftsmen to create Art Wood, a fusion of the natural beauty of wood and Lexus brave design.</p><p>Inspired by the patterns seen in Shimamoku wood, it has artistically combined natural woodworking processes with sophisticated Japanese slicing and laser-cutting techniques to produce three contrasting finishes for use in the new LS: Art Wood Organic, Art Wood Herringbone and Laser Cut Special Wood. The focus has been on producing bold contrasts between light and dark, giving the grain patterns and colours a more vibrant appearance.</p><p>Art Wood Organic is inspired by a blazing fire and took more than a year&rsquo;s work to define. By layering the wood and applying a natural gloss coating to enhance the vibrancy of the grain, an impression of flickering flames is produced.</p><p>The wood is sustainably and responsibly sourced from the Agathis tree, a species native to Southeast Asia. Thin veneer sheets are stacked in multiple layers and then precision-sliced across the grain by the Takumi to produce the ultimate pattern. The striking curves and bold contrasts this process produces mark a new approach by Lexus, with strong appeal for people who value distinctive quality and forward-looking design.</p><p>And, because the grain patterns in a piece of wood are as unique as your fingerprint, in every LS the appearance and effect will be slightly different, further emphasising the individuality of every car Lexus builds.</p><p>You will find the Art Wood details in key areas around the new LS&rsquo;s interior, for example in the gear lever and door handles surrounds where they complement the use of fine leathers and co-ordinated colourways to contribute to the cabin&rsquo;s high aesthetic quality and superior ambience.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[lexus,2012 LS,2018 ls]]></category>

<p>For Lexus, it is about seamlessly anticipating your needs with the hospitality principles enshrined in Omotenashi and providing a luxurious interior space, rich in Takumi craftsmanship. With the new LS flagship sedan it is taking these qualities to an unprecedented level.</p><p>As an example of the exquisite detailing customers can expect, Lexus has made its new Lexus LS unique among contemporary vehicles by using hand-cut glass to create distinctive and beautiful ornamentation, inspired by fine Japanese Kiriko glassware.</p><p>A world first for a production vehicle, it&rsquo;s a perfect example of how Lexus is using Japanese craftsmanship to create innovative elegance.</p><p>Masters of Kiriko worked closely with Lexus designers and engineers to replicate the hand-carved appearance of their glasswork. Traditional Kiriko patterns are created by hand cutting clear colours and delicate lines in the glass, which is then repeatedly polished to a soft glow.</p><p>The new LS features the Kiriko glass in a section of the door panel, striking a rich visual and tactile contrast with the stitched leather upholstery, cool metal release handle, and hand-pleated Alcantara surfacing. Although the glasswork looks beautiful and delicate, it is in fact remarkably strong, thanks to advanced glass reinforcement technology.</p><p>The finished design gives the LS a distinctive, artistic quality that exemplifies Lexus&rsquo; attention to detail.</p><p>Chief Designer of the LS, Koichi Suga, is proud of the results: &ldquo;This special ornamentation represents the best of both worlds &ndash; it is an industrial product that is also a work of art. <p>Lexus has taken a new approach to creating new trim elements, turning to Japanese culture for inspiration and combining traditional aesthetics with advanced manufacturing technologies. For the customer, this is not just about something that looks and feels good, but which also captures the imagination.</p><p>Take, for example, the draped pleating of the&nbsp;door panels, an effect created by applying the time-honoured skills of Origami paper folding.</p><p>This interpretation of a traditional Japanese artform was a key part of Chief Designer Koichi Suga&rsquo;s vision for the car: &ldquo;As a Japanese luxury brand, we wanted to integrate elements of Japanese culture and the timeless appeal of Japanese craftsmanship to express the artistic side of Lexus.&rdquo;</p><p>Suga outlined his ideas to a colour designer, who worked with a skilled fabric artisan from Kyoto. Together they produced Hand Pleats, a new fabric pleating technique that creates a three-dimensional pattern that is pleasing to the eye and touch.</p><p>It took four years to develop the hand-pleating upholstery process, which can only be carried out by human hand. It mirrors the work of the finest Origami artists, requiring individual lengths of a fabric cloth to be expertly folded like a sheet of paper, with each fold carefully overlapping the next to create the desired pleating effect.</p><p>Inside the LS, the interplay of light and shadow across the three-dimensional upholstery panels adds to the sense of an elegant, enveloping space. Such is the level of craftsmanship required, the pleated door panels are an exclusive feature in the new LS that will only be available to customers in selected markets.</p><p>For Suga, the results are perfect: &ldquo;The pattern in the fabric has the ability to change its appearance and character, whether it is struck by daytime sunlight or illuminated by the LS&rsquo; interior lighting at night. <p>It is entirely possible that no single automobile has, upon its introduction, upended a deeply established category as decisively as the first Lexus LS did when it launched the luxury brand 28 years ago. The original luxury disruptor, the Lexus LS has for nearly three decades set benchmarks for powertrain smoothness, ride quietness, craftsmanship, attention to detail, documented dependability and long-term quality.</p>

<p>The Lexus brand supported that ground-breaking vehicle by setting and maintaining new standards for the customer experience and satisfaction. Now, Lexus is repeating history with the introduction of the all-new, fifth-generation LS flagship sedan for 2018. Inside and out, the new LS reflects a strong, uniquely Japanese identity and approach to luxury. Yet the all-new LS was designed to be the brand&rsquo;s latest global citizen, available in over 90 countries.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Not only will the LS symbolize the Lexus brand, it will become the definitive new-generation luxury car embodying Japanese tradition and culture,&rdquo; said Toshio Asahi, chief engineer for the new LS. &ldquo;As such, this global pinnacle must go far beyond what the world expects from a luxury car.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>LONGER, LOWER, WIDER &ndash; AND MORE EXCITING</strong></p>

<p>Longer and lower than the model it replaces, the all-new LS debuts a strikingly sleek and bold design with a coupe-like silhouette punctuated by the unique Lexus design language. A new driver-centric performance feel stems from building the LS on the company&rsquo;s all-new global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA‑L). This premium rear-wheel drive platform, an extended version of the one used for the stunning new Lexus LC&nbsp;500 coupe, offers a more dynamic driving experience while further elevating renowned Lexus comfort.</p>

<p>The original Lexus LS won acclaim by <em>anticipating</em> what luxury customers would want, rather than by simply amplifying what established luxury automobile brands offered at the time. In that spirit, the 2018 LS sedan&rsquo;s spacious cabin, unique appointments, and visionary technology will once again surprise customers by resetting expectations for a global flagship sedan.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We set previously unheard of targets and resolutely pushed ahead towards these ambitious goals,&rdquo; said LS chief engineer Asahi. &ldquo;The customers who are going to want to own a Lexus flagship are already surrounded by luxury on a daily basis &mdash; people who have a sharp eye for authenticity to begin with. We wouldn&rsquo;t turn their heads with a conventional premium product.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>A FLAGSHIP REBORN</strong></p>

<p>The original LS launched the Lexus brand; the all-new 2018 LS is a critical touchstone in advancing the brand&rsquo;s more dynamic direction. Each generation of LS sedan leading up to the all-new 2018 iteration has advanced the state of luxury, craftsmanship, performance and safety in its own way. The most recent also introduced a far more emotional design and engaging on-road performance, setting the stage for its even more dramatic successor.</p>

<p>To create the 2018 LS, Lexus took the approach of starting from new, reimagining what a flagship sedan should be, as if launching the brand once again. The goal was not to improve on what Lexus has done, but to exceed expectations of global luxury customers.</p>

<p>A common thread through all LS models remains: <em>Omotenashi</em>, the concept of Japanese hospitality. Applied to a luxury automobile, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, <em>anticipating</em> their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them from hazards.</p>

<p><strong>CRAFTING A UNIQUE IDENTITY</strong></p>

<p>&ldquo;The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand,&rdquo; said chief designer, Koichi Suga. &ldquo;More than any other model, it embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brand stands for.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Lexus designers took full advantage of the new platform, with its lower profile and length on par with that of a prestige long-wheelbase sedan, to give the new LS a stretched, ground-hugging appearance. Compared to the outgoing LS, the new model is about 6 inches / 15 mm lower, while the hood and trunk are approximately 1.2 inches / 30 mm and 1.6 inches /40 mm lower, respectively.</p>

<p>Following the &ldquo;Yet&rdquo; philosophy that has been passed on since the first-generation LS, Lexus created a design offering the room and comfort of a prestige &ldquo;three-box&rdquo; sedan, yet with the more striking coupe-like silhouette that holds stronger appeal for many of today&rsquo;s luxury customers. The new LS is also the first Lexus sedan with a six-window profile, which enables excellent outward visibility. Also a first for a Lexus sedan, the flush-surface windows smoothly integrate with the side pillar.</p>

<p>The unique rendition of the spindle grille mesh, with a texture that seemingly changes in changing light, is the result of both intense CAD development and hand-adjusting thousands of individual surfaces. Flanking the unique grille, the narrow slit-like 3-projector lamp merges with an L-shaped LED lamp that wraps broadly around to the side to give the front of the LS a resolute gaze.</p>

<p>The coupe-like silhouette is not due solely to the fastback roof style. Maximizing the GA‑L platform&rsquo;s low form, the pillars of the cabin taper from the central position of the occupants. Together with the contrast between the pulled-in doors and the front and rear fenders that flare away from the central position of the occupants, this creates a dynamic form.</p>

<p>A front to the rear shoulder line gives the vehicle&rsquo;s basic posture a low stance with a horizontal axis and a bold appearance. Additionally, the axes of the dramatically flared front and rear fenders are slanted forwards, creating a dynamic impression that evokes driving performance.</p>

<p>On all 2018 LS models, an outer slide-type sunroof preserves headroom with the lower roofline.</p>

<p>The 2018 LS debuts two new 19-inch wheel designs and three 20-inch wheel designs, two of which are also new. The 20-inch premium wheels employ a brilliant appearance created using an electroplating technique known as sputtering. All but one (F SPORT) of the new wheel designs feature a hollow rim structure that helps reduce resonant sounds generated by the tires.</p>

<p><strong>VEHICLE DYNAMICS</strong></p>

<p>More than ever before, luxury sedan drivers demand greater handling agility and performance feel, but without sacrificing comfort. It&rsquo;s one of the most difficult balances to achieve in a vehicle, yet the new Lexus GA&ndash;L platform easily meets this challenge.</p>

<p>The GA‑L platform is the stiffest in Lexus history, setting the stage for enhanced handling, ride smoothness and cabin quietness. The 123-inch / 3125 mm wheelbase is 1.3-inch / 35 mm longer than the outgoing LS long-wheelbase model. The new wide and low LS design optimizes the center of gravity and weight distribution.</p>

<p>Helping to provide the uncanny ride and handling balance in the new LS is the latest generation of a chassis control technology, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), which was first introduced in 2005. This system implements cooperative control of all available vehicle subsystems &ndash; ABS, Traction Control (TRAC/TRC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Electric Power Steering (EPS), Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) and Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) to control basic longitudinal, lateral and vertical motion as well as yaw, roll and pitch.</p>

<p>The all-new GA‑L vehicle architecture that underpins the LS is the result of a completely new approach to engineering, materials and loads of the vehicle structure. Rather than starting from existing vehicle platform and then figuring out how to modify it to fit the LS&rsquo; shape and strengthen it to support contemporary chassis dynamics, Lexus engineers literally started with a clean sheet of paper &ndash; a blank CAD screen&ndash; in designing the new structure.</p>

<p>Examples of this can be easily seen underhood, where new cast-aluminum suspension towers that support the upper spring seats and suspension mounts are visible above each front wheel. Since aluminum and steel can&rsquo;t be welded together with conventional techniques, the joint attaching the aluminum tower casting to the steel body structure is made with self-piercing rivets and high-strength adhesive bonding; similar processes are used to secure the aluminum rear suspension towers to the body structure behind the back seats. Compared to structures with similar capabilities in steel, this technology is 42 percent lighter at the front; in the rear the aluminum structure has 1.5 times the rigidity of steel with 50 percent less weight.</p>

<p>In creating the new LS, engineers used lightweight materials including ultra-high tensile hot stamped steel and other steel alloys in critical areas with tensile strengths from 590 up to 1180 MPa and aluminum. In fact, the 2018 LS has a high tensile steel mass composition of nearly 30 percent, which is more than double was present in the previous-generation LS (14.1 percent). The new, highly rigid LS platform and the new twin-turbo V6 engine enable a more dynamic driving experience.</p>

<p>A combination of special body adhesive and the use of Laser Screw Welding, a proprietary laser welding process proven on other recent Lexus models, increases panel joint rigidity and gives the LS a feeling of exceptional strength and solidity.</p>

<p>Critical to its driving performance, the new platform lowers the vehicle&rsquo;s center of gravity by placing most of its mass, including the engine and the occupants in positions more centralized and lower in the chassis. Special braces in the engine compartment, stiff aluminum front and rear suspension towers, and other features help bolster the strength of key chassis structures.</p>

<p>LS models have long set benchmarks for suspension compliance, yet even here Lexus saw opportunity for further gains. For example, the all-new multilink front suspension employs double ball joints on the upper and lower control arms to help allow for control of the smallest movements from the driver inputs and road conditions. This unique dual-ball joint arrangement optimizes suspension geometry to increase wheel control and yield more precise steering response with better initial effort. To reduce unsprung weight and aid agility and comfort, aluminum is used extensively in the suspension.</p>

<p>Like the previous LS, the all-new model offers an available air suspension system that further refines the already sublime ride quality. A new, more advanced version of Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) continually adjusts damping control in response to driving operations and road surface conditions. &ldquo;Continually&rdquo; is the key word, because Lexus increased the damping-force switching levels from the previous model&rsquo;s nine to 650 in the 2018 LS. The result is faster, more seamless and refined operation.</p>

<p>The new AVS system effectively provides both shock isolation and a flat ride even on road surfaces with large undulations as well as small, rough areas. The result is enhanced steering response and stability along with greater ride comfort. As a real-world example, when driving an AVS-equipped 2018 LS in an urban setting over a rough surface, the system can increase ride comfort without increasing damping force too much. Yet, when the steering wheel is turned, damping force increases to suppress unwanted weight transfer and preserve flat cornering.</p>

<p><strong>LS PERFORMANCE AND SMOOTHNESS REDEFINED: TWIN-TURBO V6 AND 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION</strong></p>

<p>For high power, scintillating performance and excellent fuel efficiency, Lexus designed an all-new 60-degree 3.5-liter V6 engine specifically for the new LS. This engine has an undersquare design for improved thermal efficiency coupled with twin turbochargers, and has benefitted from the company&rsquo;s F1 technology. This new LS engine is indicative of the more dynamic approach being taken by Lexus, offering V8-level power in a more compact package with efficiency and refinement.</p>

<p>The new LS engine offers the output one would expect in a flagship sedan: 416 horsepower / 421 PS (310 kW)<sup>1</sup> /417 PS (307 kW)<sup>2</sup> and 442 lb-ft / 600 Nm of torque, significant gains over the outgoing LS model&rsquo;s naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 (386 horsepower / 387 PS /285 kW and 367 lb-ft / 493 Nm). The engine&rsquo;s long stroke, optimized 0.86 bore-to-stroke ratio, increased valve angle, straight intake ports and laser-clad intake valve seats developed using performance simulations based on F1 technology combine to yield world top-level high-speed combustion technology and thermal efficienc.</p>

<p>The twin turbochargers were designed and produced in-house to control tolerances and quality. They achieve top-level mechanical efficiency by improving exhaust energy recovery using a curved turbine blade shape and increased blade length, along with die-cast compressor housings and improved surface precision. Electric wastegates provide ultra-precise turbo boost control for seamless, lag-free power buildup. The intercoolers are cooled by engine coolant for higher performance and efficiency.</p>

<p>A special version of Lexus&rsquo; D 4S gasoline direct injection plus port injection system was developed to improve injection control linked to turbocharger operation. Called D 4ST, this system controls new six hole direct injectors and the port fuel injectors to take advantage of the turbochargers and the high tumble ratio of the engine.</p>

<p>Twin water-to-air intercoolers reduce the temperature of air pressurized by turbocharging. The intercoolers are mounted on top of the engine, each in a direct path between its turbocharger and intake throttle to reduce volume and lag in the intake tract.</p>

<p>Remarkable powertrain smoothness, a Lexus hallmark, begins deep inside the cylinder block, where a ladder frame support for the crankshaft main bearings adds rigidity for low vibration. Redesigned engine mounts, the electric wastegates and numerous other features also contribute to the engine&rsquo;s ultra-smooth demeanor.</p>

<p>The new LS 500 sees a 0-100 time of 4.9 sec. Perhaps more critical to driving enjoyment, though, is how Lexus tuned the engine and transmission to deliver instant acceleration and a constant buildup of torque toward the engine&rsquo;s redline. The driver can tailor powertrain response and feel by choosing from Normal, Sport S or Sport S+ modes. Just enough of the exhaust note can be heard to enhance the sporty feel.</p>

<p>The first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission for a premium passenger car, having debuted in the Lexus LC 500, is now also used in the new LS&nbsp;500 gas models. It is a torque converter automatic, yet with shift times that rival those of dual-clutch transmissions. The wide bandwidth afforded by 10 closely spaced ratios is ideal for all driving situations. Using aluminum for the clutch drum, clutch hub and planetary carrier reduce rotating mass; coupled with shortened internal oil passages and smaller, faster shift solenoids results in quicker shifts. These improvements, plus a resin plastic transmission oil pan, yield a 10-speed transmission weighing the same as the previous 8-speed gearbox.</p>

<p>The LS features steering wheel shifter paddles. However, even drivers who might enjoy controlling gearshifts manually will be duly impressed by the automatic mode&rsquo;s advanced electronic control system. The artificial intelligence transmission logic (AI-Shift Control) <em>anticipates</em> the driver&rsquo;s input by monitoring acceleration, braking and lateral-g forces to execute perfectly timed, ultra-quick shifts</p>

<p>For starting acceleration, the close ratios of the low gears and the short shift times enable a rhythmical and exhilarating acceleration feel. The high torque of the twin-turbo engine matches ideally with the higher gear ratios for effortless, serene highway cruising, yet very quick downshifts yield direct acceleration with no lag in G response. To provide a direct feel, while also supporting fuel efficiency, torque converter lock-up activates in all ranges except when starting off.</p>

<p>The available AWD system features a Torsen<sup>&reg;</sup> limited-slip center differential to further enhance grip, traction and cornering stability. The torque distribution can vary from 31 percent front / 69 percent rear on dry roads to as much as 48 percent front / 52 percent rear on slick surfaces.</p>

<p><strong>PROGRESSIVE COMFORT WITH TRADITIONAL INSPIRATION</strong></p>

<p>Creating a new standard of flagship luxury is not simply a matter of adding more features and technology. Inspired by the <em>omotenashi</em> principle, Lexus sought to instill the new LS cabin with luxury that welcomes and envelops passengers while treating the driver like a partner.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I hope that when you open the door you&rsquo;ll experience an immediate, intuitive sense that you&rsquo;re looking at an interior that is unlike any luxury car before,&rdquo; said Chief Designer Suga.</p>

<p>New seating designs include available 28-way power adjustable front seats. Combining electric motors with a new pneumatic control system allows fine adjustment of the entire seat with minimal weight and bulk; heating and massage are included. A Warming Function (spot heater) in the rear seat is a world first. Two dedicated heaters&mdash;located in the shoulder and lower back areas of the seat&mdash;warm these specific areas without warming a person&rsquo;s entire body.</p>

<p>The organically shaped dash design clusters information displays at a uniform height to support the &ldquo;seat-in-control&rdquo; layout that emphasizes the driver&rsquo;s ability to operate all systems without changing body posture.</p>

<p><strong>CABIN COUTURE</strong></p>

<p>The 2018 LS&nbsp;500 offers a choice of nine interior color schemes, plus two for the F&nbsp;SPORT (F-White, Black and White, and Flare Circuit Red). In addition, nine choices in interior trim are available, including the exclusive Naguri-style aluminum for the F&nbsp;SPORT.</p>

<p>Nearly all elements are upholstery-wrapped, and a high level of craftsmanship has been applied even to the finer details, resulting in an elegant finish with a sense of depth. For example, the higher-grade seats feature quilting, and the perforation pattern on the F&nbsp;SPORT front seats has the same L-shaped mesh pattern as the car&rsquo;s front grille.</p>

<p>The available L-aniline leather is the brand&rsquo;s most luxurious leather ever, made using only the top one percent of carefully selected North American hides tanned by a special process ensures maximum softness, producing material that is 30 percent smoother than semi-aniline leather.</p>

<p>Inspired by Shimamoku wood patterns, the new forms that combine the artistic combination of natural woodwork and application of Japan&rsquo;s sophisticated sliced wood and laser-cutting manufacturing technologies are used for the new LS. New patterns, including Art Wood Organic, Art Wood Herringbone and Laser Cut Special Wood feature bolder contrasts between light and dark, giving the wood a more vibrant appearance.</p>

<p>Art Wood Organic was inspired by a &ldquo;blazing fire&rdquo;, and took over a year to create. By layering the wood and applying a natural gloss coating to enhance the vibrancy of the grain, the resulting pattern gives the impression of a flickering flame.</p>

<p>Art Wood Herringbone features wood mosaic craftsmanship similar to that used for decorating musical instruments. Natural wood pieces are individually handcrafted by a Takumi craftsperson to create a delicate, Lexus-original mosaic, with an L-motif pattern subtly blended into the herringbone design.</p>

<p>To create the Laser Cut Special wood trim, a cutting and forming technology is utilized to expose beautiful metal lines beneath the natural wood veneer that can be seen and felt.</p>

<p><strong>THE INTERSECTION OF TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY</strong></p>

<p>A new approach to creating trim elements again turned to Japanese culture, combining traditional Japanese aesthetics with advanced manufacturing techniques. This is reflected in signature touches, such as beautiful interior ambient lighting inspired by Japanese Andon lanterns and armrests that appear to float next to the door panel.</p>

<p>On Luxury models, Kiriko Glass ornamentation and available hand-folded pleats on the door trim perfectly illustrate the brand&rsquo;s &ldquo;Innovative elegance through Japanese craftsmanship&rdquo; and exemplify a true handcrafted approach.</p>

<p>The striking cut glass ornamentation &ndash; a world first in a production vehicle - draws inspiration from Japanese Kiriko glassware. Traditional Kiriko patterns are created using a technique that involves hand-cutting clear colors and delicate lines in a piece of glass, which are then repeatedly polished to a soft glow. For the 2018 LS, Kiriko master craftsmen worked closely with Lexus designers and engineers to duplicate the hand-carved appearance of Kiriko cut glass using leading-edge laser data copying and polishing technology. For those not choosing the Luxury model, the look of the Kiriko cut glass pattern ornamentation has been adopted for the display zone in front of the passenger seat.</p>

<p>The Hand-pleated Upholstery is produced using a process that took four years to develop&mdash;and that can be done only by human hands. A single cloth sheet is folded like origami paper, each fold carefully overlapped with the next, creating a dramatic pleated effect. The effect of the light and the three-dimensional upholstery creates an elegant space that envelops the occupants.</p>

<p>Integrated into the LS&nbsp;500&rsquo;s cabin is the next-generation Remote Touch Interface, designed to mimic smartphone operation and supporting handwritten input. In addition to its 12.3-inch wide navigation display, the LS can incorporate an optional 24-inch color heads-up display (HUD)&mdash;the largest in the world&mdash;that projects a variety of information onto the driver&rsquo;s forward view.</p>

<p><strong>ENVELOPING REAR SEAT LUXURY</strong></p>

<p>While making the new LS even more of a driver&rsquo;s car, Lexus also optimized the LS as a car in which <em>to be driven</em>, lavishing considerable attention to the rear seat. The rear cabin design creates seamless, enveloping continuity between the trim and seatbacks for passenger egress.</p>

<p>Options for heating, and massage make the rear seat a welcoming environment. The available power front and rear seat with Shiatsu massage and a raised ottoman, part of the Executive Package, offers more legroom than any previous-generation LS (3.4 in. / 86 mm more than the outgoing model). In addition, the seat behind the front passenger can be reclined up to 48 degrees (largest angle in the segment), and can be raised up to 24 degrees to assist the rear-seat passenger exiting the vehicle.</p>

<p>Available rear &ldquo;Relaxation Seats&rdquo; with a warming function use air bladders integrated into the seatback and seat cushion. These are inflated to strategically apply pressure to the occupant&rsquo;s body, while also applying warmth to the shoulder and lower back areas. The occupant can select from three full-body programs (&ldquo;Refresh&rdquo;, &ldquo;Stretch&rdquo; and &ldquo;Simple&rdquo;) and four that target specific areas (&ldquo;Upper Body&rdquo;, &ldquo;Lower Body&rdquo;, &ldquo;Shoulder&rdquo;,&rdquo; and &ldquo;Lumbar&rdquo;).</p>

<p>Because the new LS is lower than previous versions, Lexus for the first time equipped the available air suspension with an access function. Activated by unlocking the car with the smart key, access mode automatically raises the vehicle and widens the seat bolsters to welcome drivers behind the wheel.</p>

<p><strong>THE NEW LS F&nbsp;SPORT</strong></p>

<p>The new LS&nbsp;500 F&nbsp;SPORT instills a more engaging driving spirit through carefully applied chassis tuning and enhancements, while still emphasizing exceptional comfort.</p>

<p>Lexus took full advantage of the new GA&ndash;L platform&rsquo;s inherent driving agility when developing the 2018 F&nbsp;SPORT package. Handling enhancements via the latest iteration of the VDIM system allows for integrated management of these chassis dynamics as a single system. Optimal control of these motions enables exceptional ride comfort, enhancing traction, safety and handling agility. VDIM is capable of aiding stability when the car is traversing split-friction surfaces, such as dry pavement with ice.</p>

<p>More of the platform&rsquo;s intrinsic performance capability is unlocked via exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels with 245/45RF20 front and 275/40RF20 rear tires in either summer performance or all-season compounds. In addition, larger front and rear brakes &mdash; six-piston aluminum monoblock calipers on front around two-piece ventilated spiral-fin iron rotors 400&nbsp;mm in diameter by 36&nbsp;mm wide and four-piston calipers on 359&nbsp;mm by 30&nbsp;mm ventilated spiral-fin rotors in the rear, all with high-friction brake pads &mdash; serve to drive the car&rsquo;s dynamic message home. The available Performance Package on RWD gas F&nbsp;SPORT models adds Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system Active Rear Steering The result is a full-size premium luxury sedan that responds more like a sports coupe through curves, without sacrificing renowned Lexus ride comfort.</p>

<p>The 2018 LS&nbsp;500 F&nbsp;SPORT stands out, but doesn&rsquo;t shout. It essentially &ldquo;turns up the volume&rdquo; of the new LS design, so to speak, without distorting the fidelity. An exclusive version of the spindle grille shows even greater intricacy in the design &ndash; and the brand&rsquo;s obsessive attention to details. CAD operators spent five months developing the F&nbsp;SPORT grille to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light. Even then, they adjusted 7,100 individual surfaces to achieve the desired look and texture (compared to 5,000 for the standard model&rsquo;s grille).</p>

<p>Special F&nbsp;SPORT rocker moldings along with the aforementioned 20-inch wheels accentuate the rakish LS profile. Lexus infused the F&nbsp;SPORT persona throughout the cabin, starting with the perforated-grill pattern on seating surfaces and Naguri aluminum trim elements. F&nbsp;SPORT 28-way electric/pneumatic seats with cushion length extenders brace occupants when driving through curves, ensure exceptional comfort no matter how long or brief the drive.</p>

<p>The driver faces a special F&nbsp;SPORT speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter with a meter ring that slides to display information, an iconic design adapted from the limited-production Lexus LFA supercar. Attention to detail shows in the aluminum accelerator pedal and F&nbsp;SPORT shift handle, and footrest. The crowning touch is an Ultrasuede shoulder section.</p>

<p><strong>THE SOUNDS OF NEAR SILENCE&mdash;OR STIRRING MUSIC</strong></p>

<p>Lexus tuned the LS exhaust to convey a more authoritative tone, yet also designed the cabin to ensure utterly quiet cruising. New sound suppression methods further hush the environment compared even to the super-quiet previous LS models. Active Noise Control quiets the cabin even more by detecting the sound of the engine coming into the vehicle and cancelling certain frequencies using antiphase sound from the audio speakers.</p>

<p>The serenity of the LS cabin provides an ideal stage for the standard premium audio system or the new audiophile-worthy available 3D surround Mark Levinson QLI Reference Surround Sound System. Employing Quantum Logic Immersion technology (QLI), Clari-Fi music restoration technology and 23 speakers in 16 locations throughout the car (including the rear ceiling), and a 16-channel Mark Levinson Reference Amplifier producing the equivalent of 2400 watts with 0.05 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) it offers an audio experience unparalleled in any Lexus.</p>

<p><strong>ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES AND DRIVER SUPPORT</strong></p>

<p>&ldquo;The LS is designed to be the top runner in advanced safety technologies&rdquo; said Lexus LS Chief Engineer Toshio Asahi. As a flagship that pioneers a new age, the all-new Lexus LS provides world-leading safety technology through the combination of two advanced Lexus safety systems&mdash;Lexus Safety System + and Lexus Safety System + A&mdash;which are ultimately aimed at reducing traffic fatalities. The active safety package Lexus Safety System + has been combined with Lexus Safety System + A.</p>

<p>The Lexus Safety System + A package includes Active Steering Assist, a world-first technology that can help prevent collisions that cannot be avoided through automatic braking alone, and Front Cross Traffic Alert, which is designed to warn the driver of the possibility of collisions with vehicles approaching from either side at road intersections. In addition, Lexus CoDrive can assist the driver in staying in lane. Together, these features and others can deliver a high level of safe driving support.</p>

<p>The new LS is also equipped with other technologies for safer and more secure driving in a wide range of situations. The support they provide has been designed to be clear and intuitive, for example in the use of a large, colour head-up display (HUD) and multi-information display to present status notifications and information on vehicle behaviour when safety features are being deployed.</p>

<p><strong>LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + PACKAGE</strong></p>

<p><strong>PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM</strong></p>

<p>Lexus&rsquo; Pre-Collision system (PCS) can help the driver avoid a collision, or lessen the consequences of an impact, even at high speed.</p>

<p>PCS uses a millimetre-wave radar and camera mounted on the front of the car to scan the road ahead to detect obstacles or hazards. It functions both when driving straight ahead and when cornering. It also computes data collected from sensors around the car monitoring factors such as vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs. This information helps the PCS determine the risk of a rear-end collision with a vehicle ahead.</p>

<p>If it calculates a high risk of an impact, it will trigger a warning buzzer and light up a &ldquo;BRAKE&rdquo; command in the multi-information display to alert the driver to take action. The moment the brake pedal is pressed, the system initiates a Pre-Collision Brake to provide optimum braking force. This can achieve deceleration of up to 40km/h, slowing the vehicle to reduce the severity of any impact, or potentially bringing the car to a stop before an impact occurs.</p>

<p>If the driver fails to respond to the alerts and does not apply the brakes, the Pre-Collision Brake will automatically deploy to reduce the vehicle&rsquo;s speed.</p>

<p>PCS also provides a pedestrian protection function. If a pedestrian is detected in the vehicle&rsquo;s path, automatic braking will be activated. This operates when the Lexus is travelling at between 10 and 80km/h.</p>

<p><strong>ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL</strong></p>

<p>The PCS&rsquo; radar is also used to provide Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, working down to very low speeds and standstill. Once the way ahead is clear, the ACC will automatically and smoothly accelerate the vehicle back to its pre-selected cruising speed. If the car has been brought to a halt, the driver simply has to press the accelerator briefly for the system to be reactivated.</p>

<p>The ACC can operate in two modes: constant speed control, like a conventional cruise control system, or vehicle-to-vehicle distance control. With the latter mode, the driver can set long, medium or short vehicle-to-vehicle distances, according to preference or traffic conditions. The control settings selected are shown on the multi-information display.</p>

<p><strong>LANE DEPARTURE ALERT</strong></p>

<p>Lane Departure Alert uses the PCS camera, mounted on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror, to track the vehicle&rsquo;s course between lane markings painted on the road surface. If it detects that car is moving out of its lane without the turn indicators being used, it will light up a warning on the multi-information display and sound a buzzer, prompting the driver to steer back to the correct path. On the new NX, the driver will also experience haptic feedback through the steering wheel as an additional warning.</p>

<p><strong>ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM</strong></p>

<p>An adjustable LED Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) prevents the LS from dazzling other road users. Eleven independent LED chips in each headlight are enabled/disabled for precise control of the illuminated and non-illuminated areas. This means the driver can enjoy maximum, safe use of high beam lighting, improving their field of vision without the risk of dazzling other road users.</p>

<p><strong>ROAD SIGN ASSIST</strong></p>

<p>Road Sign Assist recognises traffic signs using the windscreen-mounted camera, repeating the information on the multi-information display. This helps prevent the risk of the driver failing to notice important warnings or commands on major routes, including speed limits and lane closures. The system can detect signs that are designed according to the international standards of the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals.</p>

<p><strong>LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + A PACKAGE</strong></p>

<p><strong>PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM WITH PEDESTRIAN ALERT AND ACTIVE STEERING ASSIST</strong></p>

<p>The new LS is the first Lexus model to be equipped with a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Alert and Active Steering Assist, in addition to its established functions. This is a world-first technology that can pinpoint the location of a pedestrian and automatically control the car&rsquo;s steering and braking.</p>

<p>With Pedestrian Alert, if there is a possibility of the vehicle colliding with a pedestrian ahead, the position of the pedestrian is shown in an animated graphic on the head-up display, contributing to the driver&rsquo;s intuitive recognition of the situation. Pre-Collision System determines when there is a high risk of a collision with a pedestrian in the lane of travel, or with a continuous structure, such as a guardrail. If it calculates that that brake control alone will be insufficient to avoid a collision, steering assistance is provided, in addition to a driver alert and braking. When Active Steering Assist is deployed, the car will only move within a clearly marked lane. The system automatically checks for any vehicles in the car&rsquo;s blind spots, including motorcycles.</p>

<p><strong>LEXUS CODRIVE ADVANCED DRIVING ASSIST TECHNOLOGY</strong></p>

<p>Lexus CoDrive adds Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to the functions of the Adaptive Cruise Control to provide steering support in line with the driver&rsquo;s intentions. It can significantly reduce the burden on the driver by providing seamless driving support on roads with many bends, or in traffic jams. It is co-ordinated with the head-up and multi-information displays to give the driver clear notification of the status of the support being provided.</p>

<p><strong>LANE TRACING ASSIST</strong></p>

<p>Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) provides lane-keeping support by way of steering control when Adaptive Cruise Control is in operation. As well as camera detection of lane markings, the system will trace the path of the vehicle ahead to enable assistance even when lines cannot be recognised, for example when driving in low-speed congestion, when there is little space between vehicles.</p>

<p><strong>TWO-STAGE ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM</strong></p>

<p>The two-stage Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) provides optimal lighting by way of separate on/off control of the two rows of LEDs &ndash; eight upper and 16 lower &ndash; in each headlight. This enables finer control of light strength and distance compared to the current LED-based AHS. This improves night-time visibility by allowing more frequent driving with the headlights on high beam, without dazzling preceding or oncoming vehicles.</p>

<p><strong>FRONT CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT</strong></p>

<p>Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) is designed to help prevent collisions at intersections by detecting approaching vehicles. Using side-looking radars, the advanced system alerts driver to a vehicle approaching an intersection ahead from either side. If the driver proceeds, regardless of there being another vehicle approaching from left or right, warnings are given by a buzzer and on the LS&rsquo; multi-information display.</p>

<p><strong>ROAD SIGN ASSIST</strong></p>

<p>The Road Sign Assist (RSA) in the new LS makes use of navigation maps as well as a camera to acquire road sign information, which it then presents on the vehicle&rsquo;s head-up and multi-information displays, reducing the risk of the driver failing to recognise signs and encouraging safe driving.</p>

<p><strong>IMPROVEMENTS TO LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + FUNCTIONS</strong></p>

<p>Lexus has further evolved the performance of the PCS, LDA and Adaptive Cruise Control in Lexus Safety System +, featured in combination with Lexus Safety System + A in the new LS.</p>

<p><strong>PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM</strong></p>

<p>The improved Pre-Collision System (PCS) can detect cyclists and night-time pedestrians and has improved deceleration performance during automatic braking. For example it can slow the vehicle by as much as 60km/h when a pedestrian is detected, thus improving its collision prevention performance.</p>

<p><strong>LANE DEPARTURE ALERT</strong></p>

<p>As well as detecting lane markings on the road surface, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) will also be able to recognise the boundaries between asphalt and other elements, such as grass, dirt or kerbstones, thanks to advances in its recognition capability. This will allow it to perform its functions of alerting the driver and adjusting steering feedback and torque to encourage a return to the correct line, even on roads without line markings.</p>

<p><strong>ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL</strong></p>

<p>The Adaptive Cruise Control achieves outstanding basic recognition performance with wide-angle detection, using a new millimetre-wave radar and a camera with a wider forward recognition range. The system also helps make driving more comfortable, with smooth acceleration at start-up and during following, departure and acceleration, for a sense of security for occupants. It also gives smooth deceleration in the case of a rapid change in in speed.</p>

<p><strong>ADDITIONAL ACTIVE SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES</strong></p>

<p>The new LS will further benefit from additional active safety technologies that will help protect the vehicle and occupants by alerting the driver to collision risks when parking and providing a view of the area immediately around the vehicle when manoeuvring or cornering.</p>

<p><strong>PARKING SUPPORT BRAKE</strong></p>

<p>The LS&rsquo;s low-speed braking support systems have been integrated in a single package, with the aim of reducing damage when parking, when the driver needs to take account of nearby moving vehicles and pedestrians and stationary objects such as walls and street furniture. The world&rsquo;s first rear pedestrian support brake has been added to the existing Intelligent Parking Sensors and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking. This detects pedestrians behind the vehicle using a rear camera; if there is a risk of a collision, alerts and brake control are triggered.</p>

<p><strong>PANORAMIC VIEW MONITOR WITH SIDE CLEARANCE AND CORNERING VIEW FUNCTIONS</strong></p>

<p>Side clearance view and cornering view functions have been added to the Panoramic View Monitor, making it easier for the driver to determine the safe space around the vehicle. Side clearance view produces an image on the LS&rsquo;s display monitor that shows the area in front of the car as if seen from a high position above the rear of the vehicle, giving the driver better sight of the space on each side of the car, for example when passing another car on a narrow road. When side clearance view is operating, cornering view automatically produces an image of the vehicle as seen from the rear at an angle in line with the car&rsquo;s direction when moving through a bend or turn. These help the driver confirm left or right turns can be made safely</p>

<p>La LS 2013 am&eacute;liore la s&eacute;curit&eacute; des pi&eacute;tons gr&acirc;ce, &agrave; la fois, au syst&egrave;me d'&eacute;clairage adaptatif (AHS), de d&eacute;veloppement r&eacute;cent, et au perfectionnement du syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision avanc&eacute; (A-PCS) avec aide &agrave; l'&eacute;vitement des collisions de jour comme de nuit.</p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me de maintien dans la voie de circulation (LKA) &eacute;volue avec l'introduction d'un contr&ocirc;le de la vitesse de lacet pour corriger la d&eacute;rive du v&eacute;hicule due &agrave; des modifications de d&eacute;vers ou des vents lat&eacute;raux. Les derni&egrave;res versions du syst&egrave;me anti-angle mort (BSM) et de vision nocturne Lexus sont &eacute;galement propos&eacute;es pour une meilleure visibilit&eacute; du conducteur.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision avanc&eacute; (A-PCS)</strong></p>

<p>Le nouveau syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision avanc&eacute; (A-PCS) avec aide &agrave; l'&eacute;vitement des collisions offre la s&eacute;curit&eacute; active la plus sophistiqu&eacute;e du march&eacute;. Il assiste le conducteur pour &eacute;viter ou att&eacute;nuer l'impact avec d'autres v&eacute;hicules et les pi&eacute;tons en conduite urbaine ou sur autoroute, de jour comme de nuit.</p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me avanc&eacute; de d&eacute;tection d'obstacles centralise les informations fournies par le radar &agrave; ondes millim&eacute;triques, les projecteurs proche infrarouges et une cam&eacute;ra st&eacute;r&eacute;o pour une d&eacute;tection pr&eacute;cise des obstacles, de jour comme de nuit. Dans la mesure o&ugrave; les accidents impliquant des pi&eacute;tons surviennent souvent apr&egrave;s la tomb&eacute;e de la nuit, la capacit&eacute; accrue de d&eacute;tection nocturne du syst&egrave;me A-PCS est essentielle &agrave; son efficacit&eacute;.</p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me avanc&eacute; de d&eacute;tection d'obstacles de la LS b&eacute;n&eacute;ficie de commandes de reconnaissance perfectionn&eacute;es pour l'analyse des images des cam&eacute;ras st&eacute;r&eacute;os permettant &agrave; cette nouvelle version du syst&egrave;me A-PCS de fonctionner sur une large plage de vitesses - la limite inf&eacute;rieure est de seulement 5 km/h - et pour la premi&egrave;re fois, d'apporter une assistance &agrave; la d&eacute;tection de pi&eacute;tons en mouvement ou &agrave; l'arr&ecirc;t, de jour comme de nuit.</p>

<p>D&egrave;s l'identification d'un obstacle &agrave; l'avant du v&eacute;hicule, le syst&egrave;me A-PCS est capable d'&eacute;valuer la probabilit&eacute; d'une collision en fonction de la position, de la vitesse et de la trajectoire de l'objet. Si cette probabilit&eacute; est jug&eacute;e &eacute;lev&eacute;e, le syst&egrave;me actionne un signal sonore et un &eacute;cran rouge d'alarme &laquo; BRAKE &raquo; sur l'affichage multifonction du combin&eacute; d'instruments.</p>

<p>Simultan&eacute;ment, le nouveau syst&egrave;me A-PCS active plusieurs syst&egrave;mes de s&eacute;curit&eacute; int&eacute;gr&eacute;s : l'assistance d'urgence de la direction &agrave; d&eacute;multiplication variable (VGRS), charg&eacute;e d'affiner la r&eacute;ponse du v&eacute;hicule aux impulsions directionnelles du conducteur, la suspension variable adaptative (AVS), qui applique un tarage plus ferme pour un meilleur contr&ocirc;le de la plong&eacute;e lors du d&eacute;clenchement du freinage de pr&eacute;collision et augmente aussi la r&eacute;activit&eacute; du v&eacute;hicule aux man&oelig;uvres d'&eacute;vitement transmises par le volant, la gestion dynamique int&eacute;gr&eacute;e du v&eacute;hicule (VDIM), pour une stabilit&eacute; dynamique accrue lors des man&oelig;uvres d'&eacute;vitement et l'assistance au freinage de pr&eacute;collision (PBA) qui amplifie la force de freinage imprim&eacute;e par le conducteur sur la p&eacute;dale de frein.</p>

<p>En cas de collision jug&eacute;e in&eacute;vitable, le syst&egrave;me A-PCS actionne le pr&eacute;tensionnement des ceintures de s&eacute;curit&eacute; par un rappel motoris&eacute; de l'enroulage de la ceinture pour am&eacute;liorer la retenue initiale. Si la vitesse relative entre le v&eacute;hicule et l'obstacle exc&egrave;de 40 km/h, le syst&egrave;me actionne automatiquement les freins et l'assistance au freinage pour ralentir le v&eacute;hicule et contribuer &agrave; limiter la s&eacute;v&eacute;rit&eacute; d'un impact.</p>

<p>Si cette vitesse relative est inf&eacute;rieure &agrave; 40 km/h et si le conducteur ne r&eacute;agit pas &agrave; l'alarme, le syst&egrave;me freine automatiquement pour amener le v&eacute;hicule &agrave; l'arr&ecirc;t complet et &eacute;viter la collision.</p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me A-PCS a augment&eacute; la puissance maximale de freinage d'environ 1 G par rapport au syst&egrave;me existant et r&eacute;duit le d&eacute;lai n&eacute;cessaire &agrave; une d&eacute;c&eacute;l&eacute;ration maximale &agrave; une seconde, ce qui am&eacute;liore significativement la possibilit&eacute; pour le conducteur d'&eacute;viter une collision &agrave; une vitesse relative inf&eacute;rieure &agrave; 40 km/h.</p>

<p>L'A-PCS est con&ccedil;u comme une aide au conducteur &agrave; qui il appartient de toujours porter attention &agrave; l'environnement de son v&eacute;hicule. Le syst&egrave;me ne peut pas pr&eacute;venir toutes les collisions et sa performance d&eacute;pend des conditions routi&egrave;res et climatiques ainsi que de l'&eacute;tat du v&eacute;hicule.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me PCS de surveillance de la vigilance du conducteur</strong></p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me PCS de surveillance de la vigilance du conducteur suit en permanence les mouvements lat&eacute;raux de la t&ecirc;te du conducteur. Si ce dernier quitte la route des yeux pendant quelques secondes alors que le v&eacute;hicule est en mouvement et qu'une collision est jug&eacute;e probable, le syst&egrave;me d&eacute;clenche automatiquement une alarme de pr&eacute;collision. Si la situation perdure, il donne un bref coup de frein et en l'absence d'une r&eacute;ponse imm&eacute;diate du conducteur, active toute les fonctions de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision.</p>

<p>Une nouvelle fonction de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision surveille les yeux du conducteur &agrave; l'aide de deux diodes &eacute;lectroluminescentes (DEL) proche infrarouges et de la cam&eacute;ra CCD du syst&egrave;me de surveillance de la vigilance du conducteur. La s&eacute;quence d'alarme de la s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision se d&eacute;clenche automatiquement d&egrave;s que la fermeture des yeux est d&eacute;tect&eacute;e.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision arri&egrave;re</strong></p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;-collision arri&egrave;re emploie un radar &agrave; ondes millim&eacute;triques log&eacute; dans le bouclier arri&egrave;re qui balaye constamment la zone &agrave; l'arri&egrave;re du v&eacute;hicule que la LS soit &agrave; l'arr&ecirc;t ou en train de rouler. Si le syst&egrave;me identifie une forte probabilit&eacute; de collision, il actionne les feux de d&eacute;tresse pour alerter le v&eacute;hicule suiveur. Si le choc est jug&eacute; in&eacute;vitable, le syst&egrave;me d&eacute;clenche automatiquement la fonction anti-coup du lapin de la s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;-collision (PCS-WIL) des appuis-t&ecirc;te avant qui se rapprochent pour r&eacute;duire le risque de l&eacute;sions cervicales.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me perfectionn&eacute; de maintien dans la voie de circulation (LKA)</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>La derni&egrave;re mouture du syst&egrave;me de maintien dans la voie de circulation (LKA) offre une assistance perfectionn&eacute;e en r&eacute;ponse aux perturbations externes telles que d&eacute;vers ou vents lat&eacute;raux.</p>

<p>En fonction des conductions climatiques, le syst&egrave;me LKA suit le marquage blanc au sol gr&acirc;ce &agrave; la cam&eacute;ra st&eacute;r&eacute;o du syst&egrave;me avanc&eacute; de d&eacute;tection d'obstacles pour identifier une d&eacute;rive du v&eacute;hicule hors de sa voie de circulation ou de la chauss&eacute;e. Il &eacute;met alors un signal sonore et fournit une assistance directionnelle pour aider le conducteur &agrave; corriger sa trajectoire.</p>

<p>Le nouveau syst&egrave;me LKA &eacute;volue pour int&eacute;grer un contr&ocirc;le r&eacute;troactif de la vitesse de lacet. L'&eacute;cart entre l'assiette id&eacute;ale et r&eacute;elle du v&eacute;hicule provoqu&eacute; par un d&eacute;vers irr&eacute;gulier ou un vent transversal est rapidement d&eacute;tect&eacute; et suivi par l'ajustement automatique du couple de braquage en fonction de la vitesse du v&eacute;hicule pour permettre au conducteur de rester plus facilement dans sa voie.</p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me LKA propose deux fonctions selon que le r&eacute;gulateur de vitesse adaptatif (ACC) est ou non simultan&eacute;ment actif. Si ce dernier est inactif, le syst&egrave;me utilise uniquement l'avertissement de sortie de la voie de circulation (LDW). Op&eacute;rationnel d&egrave;s 50 km/h, le syst&egrave;me LDW invite le conducteur &agrave; corriger sa trajectoire pour se maintenir dans la voie d&egrave;s qu'il d&eacute;c&egrave;le une sortie possible de celle-ci, par une alarme audiovisuelle et une br&egrave;ve impulsion directionnelle.</p>

<p>Dans le cas d'un fonctionnement simultan&eacute; du syst&egrave;me LKA et du r&eacute;gulateur de vitesse adaptatif, une fonction compl&eacute;mentaire de maintien dans la voie (LK) devient op&eacute;rationnelle sur une plage de vitesse comprise entre 75 et 180 km/h. Face &agrave; une &eacute;ventuelle sortie de la voie de circulation, la fonction LK d&eacute;clenche une alarme sonore et assiste le conducteur par un couple de braquage correctif.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me anti-angle mort (BSM)</strong></p>

<p>La LS 2013 utilise pour la premi&egrave;re fois le syst&egrave;me anti-angle mort (BSM) qui joue un r&ocirc;le d&eacute;terminant pour la s&eacute;curit&eacute; lors d'un changement de voie de circulation. Le syst&egrave;me BSM utilise le radar &agrave; ondes millim&eacute;triques du syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collison de la LS pour surveiller les angles morts &agrave; l'arri&egrave;re du v&eacute;hicule. Le radar est suffisamment pr&eacute;cis pour faire la diff&eacute;rence entre un mur ou un objet statique et des v&eacute;hicules qui se rapprochent.</p>

<p>Cette facult&eacute; a permis de r&eacute;duire significativement la vitesse du v&eacute;hicule &agrave; partir de laquelle le syst&egrave;me est op&eacute;rationnel. En &eacute;tant d&eacute;sormais capable de fonctionner &agrave; partir de 16 km/h, le syst&egrave;me est actif m&ecirc;me dans les embouteillages.</p>

<p><strong>Allumage automatique des feux de route (AHB)</strong></p>

<p>Une cam&eacute;ra log&eacute;e dans le r&eacute;troviseur int&eacute;rieur identifie les sources lumineuses &agrave; l'avant du v&eacute;hicule, y compris celles &eacute;manant des phares des v&eacute;hicules circulant en sens oppos&eacute;, des feux arri&egrave;re d'un v&eacute;hicule pr&eacute;c&eacute;dent et de l'&eacute;clairage public. Sur cette base, le syst&egrave;me allume ou &eacute;teint automatiquement les feux de route sans besoin d'actionner manuellement le commodo feux de route-croisement.</p>

<p><strong>Feux de route adaptatifs (AHS)</strong></p>

<p>Les blocs optiques de la LS abritent une autre premi&egrave;re Lexus, le syst&egrave;me de feux de route adaptatifs (AHS).</p>

<p>En conduite de nuit, le syst&egrave;me AHS passe automatiquement des feux de croisement en pleins phares mais aussi dans un mode interm&eacute;diaire de phares semi-occult&eacute;s. Aid&eacute; par une cam&eacute;ra mont&eacute;e en haut du pare-brise qui rep&egrave;re les v&eacute;hicules &agrave; l'avant de la Lexus, le syst&egrave;me actionne des obturateurs sur les phares pour occulter partiellement l'&eacute;clairage dans la zone occup&eacute;e par le v&eacute;hicule. En mode phares semi-occult&eacute;s, le projecteur pivote automatiquement pour adapter la port&eacute;e de l'illumination partielle &agrave; la configuration en voie de circulation unique ou multiples et aux virages.</p>

<p>Le mode semi-occult&eacute; permet d'&eacute;viter de repasser des pleins phares aux feux de croisement et augmente le temps de conduite en pleins phares au b&eacute;n&eacute;fice de la visibilit&eacute;.</p>

<p><strong>R&eacute;gulateur de vitesse adaptatif</strong></p>

<p>En compl&eacute;ment du syst&egrave;me de s&eacute;curit&eacute; pr&eacute;collision (PCS), la LS re&ccedil;oit aussi un r&eacute;gulateur de vitesse adaptatif (ACC). Le syst&egrave;me propose deux modes de fonctionnement, la r&eacute;gulation constante de la vitesse et le contr&ocirc;le de la distance inter-v&eacute;hicules. Il est op&eacute;rationnel sur une place de vitesse comprise entre 0 et 200 km/h.</p>

<p>Gr&acirc;ce &agrave; la capacit&eacute; de fonctionnement et de mesure du radar &agrave; ondes millim&eacute;triques &agrave; faible vitesse et dans un p&eacute;rim&egrave;tre restreint, le r&eacute;gulateur de vitesse est &eacute;galement op&eacute;rationnel dans une circulation lente ou charg&eacute;e. Il est capable de ralentir la Lexus jusqu'&agrave; l'arr&ecirc;t et de la faire acc&eacute;l&eacute;rer &agrave; nouveau une fois que la voie est libre.</p>

<p>La fonction de r&eacute;gulation constante de la vitesse est identique &agrave; celle d'un r&eacute;gulateur conventionnel.</p>

<p>Capable de faire la diff&eacute;rence entre les v&eacute;hicules pr&eacute;c&eacute;dant directement la Lexus et ceux se trouvant sur une voie adjacente, le syst&egrave;me de contr&ocirc;le de la distance inter-v&eacute;hicules la ralentit automatiquement et adapte l'allure &agrave; celle du v&eacute;hicule la pr&eacute;c&eacute;dant ; une fois que la voie est libre, le syst&egrave;me acc&eacute;l&egrave;re pour revenir &agrave; la vitesse de croisi&egrave;re ant&eacute;rieurement programm&eacute;e.</p>

<p>Le r&eacute;gulateur de vitesse adaptatif (ACC) est destin&eacute; &agrave; aider le conducteur &agrave; qui il appartient de toujours porter attention &agrave; l'environnement de son v&eacute;hicule. Sa performance d&eacute;pend des conditions routi&egrave;res et climatiques ainsi que de l'&eacute;tat du v&eacute;hicule.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me de vision nocturne Lexus (option sur LS 600h et hL Executive)</strong></p>

<p>Le syst&egrave;me de vision nocturne Lexus associe la cam&eacute;ra proche infrarouge mont&eacute;e en haut du pare-brise, les lampes &agrave; diodes &eacute;lectroluminescentes (DEL) proche infrarouges int&eacute;gr&eacute;es aux blocs optiques et un calculateur de vision nocturne pour diffuser l'image de la chauss&eacute;e &agrave; l'avant de la LS sur l'&eacute;cran 31 cm (12,3'') situ&eacute; sur la console centrale.</p>

<p>La cam&eacute;ra fonctionne en permanence et les projecteurs proche infrarouges sont actifs &agrave; partir de 15 km/h pour une efficacit&eacute; accrue du syst&egrave;me de vision nocturne qui peut visualiser un p&eacute;rim&egrave;tre maximal de 200 m&egrave;tres &agrave; l'avant du v&eacute;hicule.</p>

<p><strong>Syst&egrave;me de gestion dynamique int&eacute;gr&eacute; du v&eacute;hicule (VDIM)</strong></p>

<p>La nouvelle Lexus LS re&ccedil;oit la derni&egrave;re g&eacute;n&eacute;ration du syst&egrave;me Lexus VDIM de gestion dynamique int&eacute;gr&eacute;e du v&eacute;hicule pour des performances, une motricit&eacute; et une stabilit&eacute; dynamique remarquables.</p>

<p>Yet is has always remained true to four key genetic traits: The adoption of world first, cutting edge technologies; the highest levels of quality combined with a uniquely Japanese sense of style and detail; unrivalled cabin quietness; and the smooth, comfortable ride befitting a premium segment luxury sedan.</p>

<p>Constituting a significant evolution of the current LS, the new Lexus flagship scales new heights of product maturity through a bold blend of style and refinement.</p>

<p>Since its launch in 2006, the current generation LS has been subject to over 2500 ongoing improvements; at a stroke, the new LS adds another 3000 changes, including three world first, and no less than 15 Lexus first, features and technical innovations.</p>

<p>Responding in detail to customer feedback throughout every aspect of its development, the new LS has been conceived to raise the bar even higher in the pursuit of unprecedented refinement, comfort, driving performance, technical excellence and, above all, quality.</p>

<p>Representing further improvements to Lexus&rsquo; already peerless standards, the new LS now lays claim to being amongst the quietest, most comfortable cars in the world.</p>

<p><strong>DESIGN</strong></p>

<p>Reflecting the direction next-generation Lexus models will take, the bold, sophisticated dynamism of a new spindle grille frontal design awards the new LS a combination of enhanced elegance, greater road presence and stronger brand identity entirely appropriate to a flagship model.</p>

<p>A Lexus first, the new LS can be equipped with all-LED exterior lighting, including vertical foglamps incorporating the world&rsquo;s smallest PES lens with a diameter of just 30 mm, and unique, L-shaped, seamless light tube Daytime Running Lights (DRLs).</p>

<p>On board, a new instrument panel design is divided into two distinct zones: an upper Display Zone, with the ultra-wide, 12.3 inch, LCD multi-display screen &ndash;the industry&rsquo;s largest, and a lower Operation Zone, featuring system controls such as the second generation of Lexus&rsquo; award winning Remote Touch Interface (RTI) and a new Drive Mode Select system.</p>

<p>Switches have been combined and their number reduced, and the centre cluster has been made more compact. The driver&rsquo;s immediate environment has been further enhanced by a new, smaller 3-spoke steering wheel with improved adjustment.</p>

<p>Examples of Lexus craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident throughout the interior. Lexus firsts, the analogue clock incorporates a GPS-linked time correction function, the steering wheel and lateral instrument panel ornamentation are available in a new, traditional stripped wood Shimamoku finish, and the smart key is clad in genuine leather and alloy.</p>

<p><strong>REFINEMENT, COMFORT AND PROGRESSIVE FEATURES</strong></p>

<p>Comprehensive improvements have been made to the engine, road and wind noise sound insulation of the new LS, ensuring that it surpasses even the exemplary standards of cabin quietness already established by the current generation Lexus flagship.</p>

<p>The LS features Lexus-first noise reduction wheels, which significantly lower cabin noise in the front seats, whilst the level of conversation clarity in the rear seats now rates at almost 100% when the new Lexus is travelling at 100 km/h, making the new flagship sedan the quietest car in its class.</p>

<p>Body structural rigidity has been enhanced, the new LS incorporating several measures designed to further reduce vibration and improve ride comfort: A Lexus first, a new laser screw welding technique effects panel joint adhesion across entire surfaces as opposed to individual spots. In conjunction with the use of adhesive body bonding, this offers a marked increase in overall body rigidity.</p>

<p>Already renowned for their comfort, the front seats of the new LS have been further improved and are equipped with enhanced heating and cooling systems. Both front and rear seat climate control may now be automatically incorporated in the operation of the new Lexus Climate Concierge air conditioning system.</p>

<p>A world first, the new Lexus Climate Concierge offers every LS occupant the ultimate in on-board thermal comfort. The world&rsquo;s most advanced climate control system, it features all the benefits of Multi-zone Automatic Climate Control, combined with automatic integration of seat heating and cooling systems, and a steering wheel rim heater.</p>

<p>The LS&rsquo;s beautifully crafted interior is complimented by the world&rsquo;s first Advanced Illumination System (AIS). Featuring new, Champagne White interior lamps and dynamic LED instrument panel lighting, the AIS LED interior lighting greets the occupants, even before the car is unlocked, activating and fading thereafter in sequence with the vehicle starting procedure.</p>

<p>The award-winning Remote Touch Interface (RTI) offers comprehensive infotainment system control via a 12.3&rdquo; LCD multi display screen &ndash;the industry&rsquo;s largest. And the Lexus Navigation System benefits from a powerful, HDD capacity and internet connectivity, making it one of the fastest, most accurate systems on the market.</p>

<p>The new Lexus LS is fitted as standard with a Premium Surround Sound System featuring a 9 channel amplifier, 10 speakers and a digital radio tuner. With over 2000 hours spent tuning the sound to the specific acoustics of the new interior, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson&reg; Reference Surround System with 7.1 channel surround speaker architecture offers the finest in-car audio experience available today.</p>

<p>The Lexus LS Rear Seat Entertainment System features a separate DVD player and a 9&rdquo; VGA screen for the 5.1 home theatre entertainment experience of the Mark Levinson&reg; Reference Surround System. The system has been upgraded with another Lexus first; a high contrast, high definition Blu-ray&reg; player.</p>

<p><strong>ENGINE & PERFORMANCE</strong></p>

<p>The new LS is available with two powertrain options: the LS 460 equipped with a 4.6 litre V8 petrol engine and the LS 600h with Lexus Hybrid Drive.</p>

<p>Resulting from a series of improvements such as the adoption of low viscosity oil, a low resistance differential gear and revisions to the control systems, both powerplants now generate less CO2, achieving a level of 249g/km for the LS 460 and 199g/km for the LS 600h. The LS 460 engine output has even increased by 5kW (2kW in the AWD version) and now develops 387 DIN hp/ 285 kW at 6400 rpm and a maximum torque of 493Nm at 4100 rpm. Its world&rsquo;s first 8-speed automatic transmission accelerates from 0-100km/h in only 5.7 seconds.</p>

<p>The state-of-the-art Lexus Hybrid Drive system equips the LS 600h with an unparalleled balance of performance and environmental efficiency. It combines the 394 DIN hp/290 kW power of the 5.0 litre V8 engine with an electric motor output of 225 DIN hp/165 kW to generate a peak combined output of over 445 DIN hp/327 kW, making the LS 600h the world&rsquo;s most powerful full hybrid V8.</p>

<p>The LS 600h accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and on to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. Its fuel consumption of 8.6l/100km is on par with that of a 3.5 litre powered vehicle.</p>

<p><strong>DRIVING DYNAMICS</strong></p>

<p>The driving dynamics of the new LS have been rigorously upgraded to combine the refinement, ride comfort and high speed stability appropriate to the flagship of the Lexus model range with greater handling agility and a more sporting and engaging driving experience.</p>

<p>Body rigidity has been improved and aerodynamics enhanced to offer an even flatter, road-hugging ride with excellent damping characteristics for maximum comfort. The electric power steering and the Multilink suspension system have been revised to improve steering feel and response, vehicle agility and high speed stability.</p>

<p>The LS air suspension system works in co-operation with an Adaptive Variable Suspension system (AVS). A further evolution of AVS adds a 4-wheel interlock control and improved control algorithms. Previously adjusting the performance of the suspension at each wheel independently, AVS now simultaneously suppresses the three-direction vibration of roll, pitch and heave at all four wheels, minimising any unpleasant vibration in the direction of roll.</p>

<p>Brake pedal feel and operation has been improved to offer superior brake response and effectiveness. And a new Drive Mode Select system features up to five switchable driving modes &ndash;ECO, COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT S and SPORT S+, to optimise the driver&rsquo;s preferred combination of economy, comfort, performance and handling characteristics.</p>

<p>The new LS 460 is available as rear- or all-wheel drive. The full hybrid LS 600h is, as standard an all-wheel drive and -on F SPORT versions- fitted with an active stabiliser system. Both models are available as long wheelbase versions and, for the first time in the LS model range, a more dynamic, F SPORT derivative.</p>

<p><strong>F SPORT</strong></p>

<p>For the first time in its history a new, F SPORT package is now available on the LS model.</p>

<p>Targeting the more spirited driving style offered by a lower centre of gravity, F SPORT models are equipped with Sport air suspension which lowers the body height by 10 mm. F SPORT exterior design features include exclusive front grille, front bumper and rear lower bumper treatment, 19&rdquo; alloys, exclusive wheel paint and grade-specific badging.</p>

<p>F SPORT model interior design features a choice of two exclusive colour schemes, 16-way electrically adjustable, F SPORT emblem-embossed authentic sports seats, a dimple perforated leather steering wheel with paddle shifters, a matching leather gear lever, and sporting aluminium pedals and scuff plates.</p>

<p>The driving experience of LS F SPORT models combines the class-leading quietness and comfort of the standard model range with a more sporting, dynamic chassis set-up to enhance traction, grip, handling agility and driver involvement.</p>

<p>The rear-wheel drive LS 460 F SPORT is equipped with a torque-sensing, Torsen&reg; limited slip differential, which optimally distributes torque between the rear wheels, an Active Stabiliser system for enhanced body control and steering response precision, and Brembo 6-pot front brake callipers which offer smooth, highly stable braking performance.</p>

<p>All LS F SPORT models offer drivers steering wheel mounted, paddle shift manual override transmission control. Unique to rear-wheel drive LS 460 models, paddle shift incorporates automatic throttle blipping on downshifts for a smooth, highly engaging driving experience.</p>

<p>The LS 460 F SPORT also features an engine intake sound creator, which uses a damper to amplify the vibration of the intake pulse and introduce it as a pleasing note into the cabin.</p>

<p><strong>ADVANCED SAFETY</strong></p>

<p>The LS range has consistently offered the highest content of sophisticated, integrated preventive, active and passive safety technology in the world.</p>

<p>In the further development of safety technology for the new Lexus flagship, a focus was placed on the two most common sources of fatal accidents in developed countries: those that involve pedestrians, and those caused by vehicles deviating from their own lanes.</p>

<p>As a result, the new LS offers significantly improved pedestrian safety through an uprated Advanced Pre-crash Safety system (A-PCS) with collision avoidance assist. It is the most advanced pre-collision active safety system in the industry.</p>

<p>Depending on driving conditions, A-PCS is designed to assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating collisions with vehicles and pedestrians under a wide range of city and highway speeds, day or night.</p>

<p>When the system detects a vehicle, pedestrian, or obstacle ahead, an alarm alerts the driver to take appropriate steps to avoid a collision. In addition, if the relative speed between the driver&rsquo;s vehicle and the obstacle ahead exceeds 40km/h, the system automatically applies brakes and brake assist to slow the vehicle and help to reduce the severity of a collision.</p>

<p>In the event that the relative speed between the driver&rsquo;s vehicle and the obstacle detected ahead does not exceed 40km/h, if the driver does not take corrective action after receiving the alarm alert, the system automatically brakes. At these relative speeds, the system is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop to avoid a collision.</p>

<p>This system is intended to assist drivers, but it is the driver&rsquo;s responsibility to be aware of the vehicle's surroundings. The system cannot prevent all collisions and performance is dependent upon road, weather, and vehicle conditions.</p>

<p>A new, Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) automatically switches between low, high and shielded beam modes and can increase the time spent driving under high beam illumination by up to 50%.</p>

<p>The Lane-Keep Assist system (LKA) has been enhanced to automatically correct deviations caused by road camber changes and crosswinds. A Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system and Lexus Night View are also available.</p><p><strong>MANUFACTURING</strong></p><p><strong>Exemplifying the quality so consistently reflected in the winning of numerous reliability and customer satisfaction surveys throughout the globe since the very inception of the brand, Lexus employs a unique, Advanced Craftsmanship production process for the manufacture of the LS flagship at the company&rsquo;s Tahara factory.</strong></p><p><strong>Advanced Craftsmanship fuses state-of-the-art automated manufacturing operations and the ultimate in digital measurement technology with the expertise and exquisite craftsmanship of Takumi master craftsmen and rigorously trained, highly skilled technicians at every stage of development, production and quality control.</strong></p><p><strong>Employing several techniques unique in the automotive industry, Advanced Craftsmanship achieves significant improvements not only in overall, machine-measurable quality, but also in the perceived quality of every component, including the tactile quality of surfaces, the visual quality of component fit and surface finishes, and even the aural quality of the engine note.</strong></p><p><strong>New, cutting-edge production technologies have been introduced in conjunction with high precision laser welding to increase joint rigidity between panels and improve damping characteristics. This is the 5th consecutive year in which the LS has won this prestigious accolade, and the 12th time in 15 years that it has been placed first in its segment.</p><p>Development concept &ndash;The Quietest, Most Refined Car in its Class</p><p>Constituting a major change to the current LS, the new Lexus flagship scales new heights of product maturity through a bold blend of refinement and evolution.</p><p>Since its launch in 2006, the current generation LS has been subject to over 2,500 ongoing improvements; at a stroke, the new LS adds another 3,000 changes, including three world first, and no less than 15 Lexus first, features and technical innovations.</p><p>Responding in detail to customer feedback throughout every aspect of its development, the new LS has been conceived to raise the bar even higher in the pursuit of unprecedented refinement, comfort, driving performance, technical excellence and, above all, quality.</p><p>Reflecting the direction next-generation Lexus models will take, the bold, sophisticated dynamism of the new spindle grille frontal design awards the new LS a combination of enhanced elegance, greater road presence and stronger brand identity entirely appropriate to a flagship model.</p><p>The heightened perceptions of aggression and dynamism represented by the new spindle grille design herald a significant improvement in driving dynamics, responsiveness and handling agility.</p><p>Increased body rigidity not only enhances stability, but also allows for a more comfortable ride with no detriment to handling agility. Pitch and bounce control has been enhanced to give an even flatter, road-hugging ride. Revised steering offers immediately noticeable improvements in accuracy and turn-in response. This design represents a bold blend of refinement and evolution, with dynamic, modern, yet dignified styling giving the LS a unique sense of presence appropriate to the flagship of the brand.</p><p>At 5,090 mm overall, the new LS is just 30 mm longer than its predecessor. The wheelbase remains a generous 2,970 in length, and front and rear overhangs have increased by 10 and 20 mm respectively.</p><p>Key to the new design is an aggressive frontal treatment which gives the new LS a powerful, more commanding road presence. In a further evolution of a styling cue first developed on the new GS range, the inverted trapezoid upper grille and slanted lower grille have been combined and integrated into a single element, bridging the bumper mid-section to create a prominent &lsquo;spindle&rsquo; shape.</p><p>Achieving a new-found maturity here, this bold, elegant and individual grille treatment is the focal point of the major design changes. A Lexus first for the brand flagship, it makes the LS instantly recognisable as a Lexus at first glance, and is being adopted throughout the brand to strengthen the Lexus family identity between model ranges.</p><p>By projecting the surrounding bodywork forward of a vertical grille face, the spindle had been given a strong three-dimensional form, its shape further accentuated by a blacked-out grille finish and a completely chrome plated frame which extends to the bumper openings.</p><p>Beneath a new, more muscular bonnet design, the grille is flanked by headlamp clusters clearly positioned on a higher plane than the grille itself. This is a unique characteristic of Lexus models, focusing the eye at the very apex of the vehicle to give the design a resolute look and strengthen the impression of power and agility.</p><p>The LS may be equipped with two types of headlamp; a two projector discharge design and a three projector unit featuring full-LEDs. Equipped with the latter, the LS offers Lexus first, all-LED exterior lighting.</p><p>Featuring 12-LED turn signal lamps for the first time in a Lexus, the headlamp housings are underscored by integral LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). The DRLs are of a new design, featuring a single, seamless light tube which forms an L-shaped motif, further reinforcing the unique visual signature of the new LS.</p><p>The new, deep front bumper design forms a wide, trapezoid shape which anchors muscular front wings and flared wheel arches, reinforcing the new LS&rsquo;s wide front track, low centre of gravity and broad, purposeful stance.</p><p>The bumper integrates sharply sculpted front foglamp housings featuring LED foglamps. Harmonising with the spindle grille design and L-shaped DRLs, the vertical lamp structure incorporates the world&rsquo;s smallest PES lens with a diameter of just 30 mm, combining top-level illumination with a unique Lexus design signature.</p><p>In profile, the new LS shares its predecessor&rsquo;s long, elegant cabin proportions. The shape of the rocker panels and below-door mouldings has been changed, continuing the sharp form of the wheel arches and accentuating an image of air flowing smoothly along the flanks of the car. New door mirrors feature chrome plated ornamentation and incorporate LED puddle lights and a new LED turn signal.</p><p>To the rear, the front spindle design is reflected in flowing lines that cut across the boot surface from the C pillars and then flare out towards the lower half of the body, once again accentuating the new LS&rsquo;s low centre of gravity and purposeful stance.</p><p>First introduced in the LS, the unique, L-shaped motif inside the rear lamp clusters harmonises perfectly with the new trapezoidal design. The rear lamps also adopt LED technology throughout, adding depth and crystal-like clarity. The light guide LED lamps form a clearly visible L-shaped signature whether on or off.</p><p>INTERIOR DESIGN</p><p>Human-oriented interior design is one of the fundamental tenets of the L-finesse design philosophy. Marking a significant evolution in the design history of the LS, a new instrument panel reflects this with a radical change to a more horizontally-based layout offering drivers more comfortable, ergonomically ideal interaction with the vehicle&rsquo;s HMI (Human Machine Interface) systems.</p><p>A clean, elegant dashboard design forms a wide horizontal plane, emphasising the overall roominess of the interior, whilst the door and centre console trim support the driver and front passenger in a secure, cocooned environment.</p><p>The dashboard is divided into two distinct zones: an upper Display Zone, with the ultra-wide, 12.3 inch, LCD multi-display screen &ndash;the industry&rsquo;s largest- located at an ideal distance for at-a-glance viewing, and a lower Operation Zone, which allows access to system controls such as the second generation of Lexus&rsquo; award winning Remote Touch Interface (RTI).</p><p>Every aspect of the driving position has been carefully considered to create the ideal placement of controls, maximise comfort and minimise driver distraction and fatigue. Switches have been combined and their number reduced, and the centre cluster has also been made more compact.</p><p>The driver&rsquo;s instrument binnacle incorporates high-visibility, large diameter Optitron dials and a 5.8&rdquo; TFT (Thin Film Transistor) Multi-information screen &ndash;the largest amongst Lexus vehicles- with an enhanced display ability. The new LS follows the CT and GS in adopting a Drive Mode Select system, with meter illumination and multi-information display design changing from blue to red in sports driving modes, along with the switching of the hybrid system indicator to a tachometer in the LS 600h.</p><p>The centre of the instrument panel features an analogue clock, precision machined from aluminium, with a Lexus-first GPS-based time correction function. The light-emitting hands and scale have been shaped to be as narrow as possible, accentuating the sense of fine craftsmanship. The 12 0&rsquo;clock marking has been specially cut to concentrate light when the minute hand converges with it, emphasising the start of the next hour.</p><p>The driver&rsquo;s immediate environment has been further enhanced by a new, 3-spoke steering wheel which, at 380 mm in diameter, is 10 mm smaller than the 4-spoke design it replaces, offering owners a more sporting feel and a closer engagement with the vehicle&rsquo;s enhanced driving dynamics. And the aluminium, asymmetric gear shift lever has been leather-clad for a comfortable grip.</p><p>Fully described in the Refinement and Comfort chapter, both the driver and front passenger seats have been redesigned to offer improved comfort and support.</p><p>Throughout the interior, genuine materials and finishes convey a contemporary, premium look and feel, with a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Lexus is globally renowned. Lexus firsts, the lower section of the instrument panel and sides of the centre console are clad in a new, highly durable material with the highest quality stitching, and &ndash;taking design cues from the interior ornamentation- the new smart key is clad in real leather and alloy for an authentic feel.</p><p>This beautifully crafted interior is complimented by the world&rsquo;s first Advanced Illumination System (AIS). Featuring new, Champagne White interior lamps and dynamic LED instrument panel lighting, AIS is fully described in the refinement and Comfort chapter.</p><p>Wheels, Colour Schemes and Trim</p><p>The new LS may be equipped with a choice of five wheel designs, including three newly developed aluminium wheels, one 18&rdquo; and two 19&rdquo;. Both wheel sizes are available in a new, hollow chamber, noise reduction design which features a unique, high gloss, ultra-metallic coating. The Lexus flagship is available in a range of 10 exterior colours, of which three, Sonic Silver, Fire Agate and White Nova, are new.</p><p>Lexus engineers developed a new advanced coating process for the Sonic Silver finish. Vehicles with the Sonic Silver exterior appear more radiant as an additional metallic texture gives both strong shading and defined, sharp highlights. This metallic effect makes subtle and defined bodylines more noticeable and the surface appear finely polished.</p><p>The new interior is available in a choice of six colour schemes; Mellow White, Ivory, Light Grey, Black, Black and Saddle Tan, and a newly available Topaz Brown. The variety of ornamentation available has also been expanded, with newly developed Walnut, Black and both matt and high gloss Ashburl finishes, as well as newly available Shimamoku and Bamboo.</p><p>A Lexus first, the steering wheel and lateral dashboard ornamentation are available in a new, Shimamoku finish. An example of the very finest in traditional Japanese craftsmanship, Shimamoku &ndash; translated as &lsquo;striped wood&rsquo;- involves the painstaking layering and angled cutting of dark and light shaded wood veneers in a unique process which involves 67 manufacturing steps over the course of 38 days.</p><p>Fully described in the F SPORT chapter, an F SPORT package is available for the first time on the LS model range. Its cabin combined the most advanced, technically sophisticated equipment with a luxurious environment quiet enough to enable normal conversation whilst travelling at high speed.</p><p>Successive generations of LS have consistently improved on every aspect of this unique interior environment. Cabin quietness and occupant comfort levels have been painstakingly honed, and progressive equipment refined with numerous world firsts in advanced on-board technology, to create the unparalleled comfort, convenience, discreet hospitality and carefully considered driver interaction that lie at the heart of the Lexus Ownership experience.</p><p>Representing further improvements to Lexus&rsquo; already peerless standards, the new LS now lays claim to being amongst the quietest, most comfortable cars in the world.</p><p>Improved sound insulation</p><p>Comprehensive improvements have been made to the sound insulation in every area of the new LS, ensuring that it surpasses even the exemplary standards of cabin quietness already established by the current generation Lexus flagship.</p><p>Reducing engine noise, the dashboard silencer seal structure has been strengthened and insulation added to the engine cover. Both engine and road noise has been reduced through the adoption of thicker insulation to the front wheel arch liners and a revised noise insulating structure to the tibia pad.</p><p>Road noise has been reduced through the optimisation of floor silencer coverage, the addition of insulation materials under the rear seat, a change in rear wheel arch liner insulation material, an increase in the area of boot space trim sound insulation and a reinforcing of the rear partition panel hole seal structure.</p><p>Both wind and road noise have been reduced through the addition of further insulation to the door inner weather strips and service hole covers. And wind noise has been reduced through a change of insulation material for the roof trim, a smoothing of the A pillar and door frame mouldings, and the addition of aero fins to the door mirror to reduce air turbulence.</p><p>The result of these numerous enhancements is immediately noticeable aboard the new LS. Class-leading quietness is exemplified in the front seats by the lowest levels of engine noise amongst the new flagship&rsquo;s rivals, and in the rear seats by a level of conversation clarity which now rates at almost 100% when the new Lexus is travelling at 100 km/h.</p><p>Noise Reduction Wheels</p><p>Furthering these efforts to achieve the ultimately quiet ride, the new LS also becomes the first Lexus to adopt noise-reduction wheels. They channel resonant noise -generated by the tyres on impact with road surface imperfections- from the main air chamber within the tyre to adjacent hollow areas within the wheels, via resonator holes.</p><p>Once inside, the sympathetic vibrations generate air friction. The friction transforms the sound into kinetic energy, reducing the amount of noise. Tests reveal that, whilst driving on an uneven road, the cockpit environment in the area of the front seats is significantly quieter.</p><p>Body Structure Rigidity Enhanced for Greater Ride Comfort</p><p>High body rigidity is not only fundamental to vehicle stability and handling agility, it also plays a significant role in minimising the transmission of noise and vibration from the engine bay and road surface into the cabin, thus enhancing ride comfort.</p><p>The new LS incorporates several measures designed to further reduce vibration and improve ride comfort: A Lexus first, a new laser screw welding technique offers panel joint adhesion across entire surfaces as opposed to individual spots, increasing overall body rigidity.</p><p>The number of engine support member joints has been increased, and the engine mount characteristics improved. Both a larger tunnel brace and larger partition panel reinforcement have been adopted, along with larger front seat brackets.</p><p>Together, these measures result in a noticeable reduction in vibration, particularly in the floor area around the driver&rsquo;s seat, leading to a marked improvement in ride comfort.</p><p>Improved Seating Comfort and Seat Air Conditioning Control</p><p>Already renowned for their comfort, the front seats of the new LS have been further improved with a new design to minimise pressure peaks, improve support and reduce fatigue during even the longest journeys.</p><p>The upper back contact surface of the new LS front seat has been expanded, and the cushion thickness of the seat base has been increased by 20 mm for greater comfort. The addition of cushion length adjustment allows for the transfer of greater pressure under the thighs, reducing pressure on the buttocks. Improved pelvic support helps maintain correct lower body posture, reducing fatigue on long journeys.</p><p>The front passenger seat features a new, Ottoman-style, fold-out calf support which improves lower leg comfort by reducing heel pressure by 45% and thigh pressure by 10%.</p><p>Both front seats feature an improved air-conditioning system fitted as standard, the system being further incorporated within the rear seat upgrade package. The seats feature a larger heating area around the shoulder and back of the knee, and the heater output has been more than doubled, from 100 to 210 W, halving seat warm up time.</p><p>The seat also offers a larger cooling area, with twin low pressure drop heat exchangers increasing airflow by some 30%, and larger diameter seat perforations and a larger blower increasing airflow by a further 12%.</p><p>Both front and rear seat climate control may now be automatically incorporated in the operation of the new Lexus Climate Concierge air conditioning system.</p><p>Lexus Climate Concierge</p><p>A world first, the new Lexus Climate Concierge offers every LS occupant the ultimate in on-board thermal comfort. The world&rsquo;s most advanced climate control system, it features all the benefits of the Multi-zone Automatic Climate Control developed for the previous generation Lexus flagship, combined with automatic integration of the seat heating and cooling systems, and the steering wheel rim heater.</p><p>Guaranteeing ultimate comfort, the 4-zone independent control system goes beyond simply managing the air temperature within the cabin. Fully customisable, it also controls the temperature of all points of contact within the cabin &ndash;seats and steering wheel- to bring each occupant to their preferred temperature as quickly as possible.</p><p>For instance, in cold weather before the air conditioning system heating has reached maximum efficiency, the steering wheel heater and individual seat heaters are automatically turned on to warm up the driver and passengers quickly. Once the rapid seat heating function achieves a comfortable temperature -accomplished in half the time of the previous system- the seat heater automatically reduces temperature before switching off.</p><p>In a similar fashion, on hot days, a rapid cooling function controls seat temperature before the air conditioning system cooling has reached maximum efficiency, to quickly achieve a comfortable environment.</p><p>The Lexus Climate Concierge uses up to 13 sensors managed by a central ECU, including &ndash;part of the rear seat upgrade package on long wheelbase models- a unique, roof-mounted infra-red matrix sensor to measure climactic conditions throughout the cabin. Measuring the surface temperature of rear seat occupants enables the system to assess their specific thermal comfort, and then instigate bespoke adjustments to the air-conditioning system&rsquo;s independent rear zones.</p><p>No less than 20 individual outlets distribute warm or cold air throughout the cabin of the new LS. Besides B-pillar outlets, rear seat passengers benefit from generously sized Roof Climate Diffusers. Mounted above each outer rear seat, they offer unparalleled climate control around a passenger&rsquo;s head and neck.</p><p>The full hybrid LS 600h L further benefits from a heat exchanger with integrated PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heating elements. This system will warm the front cabin area as quickly as possible after vehicle start-up, before the engine itself has reached a sufficiently high running temperature to supply heating to the air-conditioning system.</p><p>Nanoe<sup>&reg;</sup> Technology</p><p>The climate control system also incorporates a new Nanoe<sup>&reg;</sup> technology system. This air cleaning technology operates automatically when the air conditioning is turned on. It releases 20 to 50Nm diameter nanoe particles -negatively charged ions wrapped in water molecules- into the cabin.</p><p>By attaching themselves to airborne particles and molecules, the nanoe ions have been said to have both an air purifying and odour eliminating effect. They also deodorise vehicle seats and ceiling to create a cleaner cabin environment.</p><p>In addition, because nanoe moisture content is approximately 1,000 times that of conventional ions, the emission of ions bonded to water molecules is said to have a moisturising effect on skin and hair, acting to enhance occupant well-being.</p><p>Advanced Illumination System (AIS)</p><p>This beautifully crafted interior is complimented by the world&rsquo;s first Advanced Illumination System (AIS). Featuring new, Champagne White interior lamps and dynamic LED instrument panel lighting, AIS is an LED interior lighting system which creates an atmosphere appropriate to the flagship of the Lexus model range.</p><p>Elements of the LED lighting illuminate to greet the occupants as they approach the car, even before it is unlocked, activating and fading thereafter in sequence with the vehicle starting procedure.</p><p>The numerous interior lamps of the AIS are divided by colour temperature into three illumination colours: a Warm White, for soft facial illumination from dome lamps and vanity mirrors; Champagne White, bringing elegance and serenity to the overall interior lighting to reinforce the progressive luxury inherent in the new LS interior design; and White Heat, for the clearest possible text illumination of the meters, instrument panel and clock.</p><p>Control of the timing, brightness and distribution of AIS illumination throughout the interior is fully coordinated, enabling both interior and exterior lighting ambience to be varied according to several vehicle operation and driving scenarios:</p><p>A &lsquo;Greeting&rsquo; lighting sequence guides the driver to the vehicle and welcomes him on board. When the door is unlocked, the DRLs and door mirror puddle lamps illuminate. As the driver approaches the vehicle, soft light floods the footwells, and the dome lights, clock and new, full-width, instrument panel band lighting gently illuminate.</p><p>The &lsquo;Vehicle Start&rsquo; sequence illuminates the meters, switches and clock to full brightness, the navigation screen opening sequence begins, and brighter instrument panel band illumination flows from the centre to both sides of the LS interior. The inside door handles and footwells are also lit.</p><p>The &lsquo;Driving&rsquo; sequence dims the instrument panel band from the sides to the centre, simultaneously dimming footwell and door handle lighting, and reducing meter, switch and clock illumination to the driver&rsquo;s preferred level.</p><p>On switching off the LS, the &lsquo;Vehicle Parked&rsquo; sequence flashes and then dims the instrument panel band lighting from each side towards the centre, before it finally concentrates to a point and extinguishes. Once the instrument panel light is off, the entire interior illuminates, including the door handles and footwells.</p><p>Second Generation RTI with 12.3&rdquo; Multimedia Display</p><p>The second generation Lexus Remote Touch Interface (RTI) multi-function control device has been enhanced for increased user-friendliness and ease of operation.</p><p>RTI features the world&rsquo;s largest on-board multimedia display; a 12.3 inch, full colour, LED screen with an ultra-wide, 24:9 format. The screen&rsquo;s size allows for the permanent display of two types of information simultaneously, such as map/audio, Night View/map and navigation input/incoming call.</p><p>The system now incorporates the world&rsquo;s first slide haptic joystick mechanism -a planar slide-type controller, much like a computer mouse, that allows users to scroll quickly and easily across the display screen. The ENTER command is now accomplished by simply pushing the controller. Usability has also been improved through the addition of ambient lighting, and by minimising the difference in height between the RTI controller and the armrest.</p><p>The Lexus Navigation System</p><p>Accessed via the LS&rsquo;s Remote Touch control system, the Lexus Navigation System benefits from a powerful, HDD capacity, making it one of the fastest, most accurate systems on the market.</p><p>In conjunction with enhanced Remote Touch control, the multimedia system&rsquo;s 12.3&rdquo; display now has multi-screen capability, allowing for the permanent display -and independent control- of three types of information simultaneously, from a menu including map, audio, vehicle information, navigation input, air conditioning functions and incoming call.</p><p>Incorporating automatic screen zoom at intersections, the navigation system features several new functions. They include a true 3-D view with city model and landmark graphics, the accurate replication of motorway signage, and speed limit information.</p><p>The advanced voice recognition system has been improved through an enhanced recognition capability and a reduction in operational steps. It allows users to search both phone and music databases, and facilitates one-shot navigation address input.</p><p>Via internet connection using the customer&rsquo;s Bluetooth mobile phone, the Lexus Navigation System provides access to an on-line Points Of Interest search facility from the Google Local Search database, and allows addresses from the Google map website to be added as destinations.</p><p>An RDS-TMC traffic information system is integrated directly within the navigation system, offering an advanced information service in nine Western European counties. This allows the most accurate information to be used in the system&rsquo;s route calculation, giving the driver the option of taking an alternative route to avoid traffic incidents.</p><p>In some European countries, traffic information is also transmitted on DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting), using TPEG (Transport Protocol Expert Group). This constitutes a significant improvement over RDS-TMC technology for several reasons; the digital signal can carry far more information; its pin-point accuracy allows for better navigation routing; and it offers a wider service with more precise traffic flow information, and parking availability.</p><p>Premium Surround Sound System</p><p>The new Lexus LS is fitted as standard with a Premium Surround Sound System. Featuring a 9 channel amplifier and 10 speakers, and now equipped with a digital radio tuner, it offers a class-leading standard audio system specification.</p><p>The system has been upgraded in the new LS, with the adoption of a new digital amplifier. Full digital processing and newly developed power integrated circuitry brings enhanced clarity to the sound. The system&rsquo;s surround sound effect has been strengthened through the use of new DSP processing technology.</p><p>New, compressed audio enhancement technology has also improved the recovery of high frequency components and tones lost from compressed audio sources such as an iPod<sup>&reg;</sup>. iPod functionality and interface quality has been enhanced; via USB port connectivity, the iPod menu can now be driven from the vehicle&rsquo;s RTI control system and album cover art displayed on the 12.3&rdquo; multimedia screen.</p><p>The system utilises no less than 10 individual speakers, including front and rear door mounted tweeters, upper rear door mid-range units, a large, 250mm subwoofer for powerful, deep bass notes and a newly adopted 87mm front centre speaker for improved definition and mid-range clarity. The carefully considered disposition of speakers within the LS interior ensures the highest possible quality of sound reproduction throughout the entire cabin.</p><p>Mark Levinson<sup>&reg;</sup> Reference Surround System</p><p>The LS may be equipped with a state-of-the-art Mark Levinson<sup>&reg;</sup> Reference Surround System offering quite simply the finest in-car audio experience available today. Over 2,000 hours of laboratory and on-road voicing have optimised the system for the specific acoustic characteristics of the new Lexus LS passenger cabin.</p><p>In conjunction with the 12.3&rdquo; display screen, the Mark Levinson<sup>&reg;</sup> Reference Surround System introduces LS owners to a complete, discrete 5.1 home theatre entertainment experience.</p><p>The discrete circuitry, 15 channel, ML3-16 Processor Power Amplifier covers a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz, producing up to 450 Watt with less than 0.1% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).</p><p>Through 7.1 channel surround speaker architecture, separate, full-range side and surround channels provide an extraordinary sense of musical envelopment and depth for all passengers. In particular, rear seat passengers do not merely experience sound from behind as with other automotive 5.1 systems.</p><p>Key to the superlative performance of the new Mark Levinson<sup>&reg;</sup> Reference Surround System are no less than 19 loudspeakers (12 of which are unique to this system alone), each one custom engineered for the particular acoustic characteristics of its location. The system comprises seven 25 mm tweeters, seven 100 mm midrange units, two 150 mm x 230 mm woofers, two 165 mm woofers and one 250 mm subwoofer.</p><p>Mark Levinson<sup>&reg;</sup> loudspeakers use a variety of advanced materials, construction techniques and geometry to reduce distortion and coloration while increasing the dynamic capability of the system to achieve truly superior results.</p><p>Blu-Ray<sup>&reg;</sup> Rear Seat Entertainment System</p><p>The Lexus LS Rear Seat Entertainment System features a separate DVD/CD player and a 9&rdquo; VGA screen for the 5.1 home theatre entertainment experience of the Mark Levinson Reference Surround System.</p><p>The system has been upgraded in the new LS, offering occupants an SD card slot and, a Lexus first; the high contrast, high definition Blu-ray player. The system remote control has also been made smaller, and the controls more intuitive.</p><p>In addition to a rear screen-dedicated Blu-ray<sup>&reg;</sup> player, the rear centre console houses a storage compartment for DVDs, CDs and headphones, a refrigerated cool-box, cup holders, a retractable table, remote controls for both the massage programme and entertainment system, and a control panel for the operation of the air-conditioning, seats and sunshades.</p><p>The system also incorporates an additional input for the connection of various portable devices such as a games console or video camera. Furthermore, two sets of headphones may be connected to the system simultaneously, allowing rear seat passengers to enjoy the full breadth of rear seat entertainment available aboard the LS without distraction to the driver or front seat passenger.</p><p>Long wheelbase LS&ndash; The Ultimate Rear Seat Comfort Experience</p><p>Also available in five-seat format, long wheelbase versions of the new LS can be equipped with two, individual, full leather rear seats divided by a bespoke centre console. Independently adjustable and fully integrated with the new Climate Concierge air conditioning system, they offer the ultimate in rear seat comfort experience.</p><p>The seats feature power adjustment, operable both via the centre console control panel and a remote control unit. Both seats can be reclined and also include a centre seatback flexing function.</p><p>The rear seat diagonally opposite that of the driver can be reclined to a maximum of 45 degrees and further features a fully retractable &lsquo;ottoman&rsquo; thigh and footrest for the ultimate in limousine seating comfort. To enhance legroom when fully reclined, the travel limit of the front seat has been extended by 40mm.</p><p>One touch of a memory button reclines the rear seat and extends the ottoman thigh and footrest, whilst simultaneously folding down the front seat headrest and moving the entire seat forward. When the rear passenger door is opened, the ottoman seat automatically retracts, whilst opening the front passenger door automatically returns the front seat to its foremost standard position and raises the headrest.</p><p>Rear Seat Relaxation System</p><p>Coupled with a conventional vibration massage system, the rear seat diagonally opposite that of the driver is equipped with a new, air-assisted massage system. The system is based on the technology and operational qualities of the best massage chairs on the market today.</p><p>Incorporating a remote air pump located in the luggage compartment to ensure silent operation, it features a total of eight pneumatic chambers covering the area of the occupant&rsquo;s shoulders, back and hips. The system reproduces professional massage techniques with a range of different programmes -the intensity of which may be adjusted by the user- including Shiatsu, shoulder and lower back acupressure.</p><p>SRS Rear Seat Cushion Airbag</p><p>The &lsquo;ottoman&rsquo; rear seat also incorporates a seat cushion airbag &ndash;unique to this segment- which activates during frontal impact, inflating the front area of the seat base to reduce the forward and downward motion of the occupant&rsquo;s pelvis and, hence, minimise abdominal injury.</p><p>Rear Power Sunshade</p><p>The LS features power sunshades to both rear and side door windows, including the rear quarterlight, both increasing comfort and providing total privacy for rear seat passengers. When the gear lever is moved to the &lsquo;R&rsquo; position, the rear power sunshade is automatically retracted to maximise visibility when reversing.</p><p>Card Key</p><p>In addition to the new leather and alloy clad smart key the LS is also available with a card key. The electric power steering and the air suspension system incorporating enhanced Adaptive Variable Suspension have been revised to improve steering feel and response, vehicle agility and high speed stability.</p><p>Brake pedal feel and operation has been improved to offer superior brake response and effectiveness. And a new Drive Mode Select system features up to five switchable driving modes to optimise the driver&rsquo;s preferred combination of economy, comfort, performance and handling characteristics.</p><p>The new LS 460 is available as a rear- or all-wheel drive. The full hybrid LS 600h is, as standard, all-wheel drive and &ndash;on F SPORT versions- fitted an active stabiliser system. Both models are available as long wheelbase versions and, for the first time in the LS model range, a more dynamic, F SPORT derivative.</p><p>Improved Body Rigidity</p><p>The body rigidity of the new LS has been significantly enhanced, improving both handling stability and ride comfort.</p><p>New, cutting-edge production technologies have been introduced to enhance the body&rsquo;s vibration-damping characteristics: A Lexus first, laser screw welding to the upper door apertures joins a larger panel area than traditional welding to better suppress deformation. And the use of body adhesives to join the lower back and roof headers connects the entire area where the panels meet, maximising the rigidity of the joints.</p><p>Further rigidity-enhancing improvements throughout the bodyshell combine to enhance stability, steering feel, and handling agility. They include front and rear suspension member brace reinforcement, a larger floor tunnel brace which increases rigidity by 60%, the addition of cabin, partition panel and lower back reinforcement, and an increase in both cowl and dash spot welds and instrument panel reinforcement joints.</p><p>As well as the adoption of laser screw welding techniques, an increase in the engine support member joints, improved engine mount characteristics and larger front seat brackets all combine to further minimise vibrations, improving ride quality.</p><p>Steering feel and response has also been improved through a 20% increase in steering support rigidity. Both the outer mounting plate thickness and the number of joints to the body have been increased. The pipe thickness of the support itself has also been increased, and additional welding added adjacent to the steering column itself.</p><p>Enhanced Aerodynamics</p><p>From the original LS 400 which, 23 years ago, evidenced a drag coefficient of just 0.28, each successive generation of LS has established a reputation for class-leading aerodynamics. With a drag coefficient of just 0.26 in all configurations, the new Lexus LS maintains this tradition, and is the most aerodynamically efficient car in its segment.</p><p>Taking aerodynamic performance another step forward, aero-stabilising fins mounted at the base of the door mirrors and at the sides of the rear combination lamps reduce air turbulence, causing air to flow smoothly down the sides and cleanly away from the rear of the vehicle. This not only improves straight line stability, but also suppresses swaying under steering inputs.</p><p>The new LS further enhances comprehensive aerodynamic underbody measures with the addition of airflow-smoothing fins to the engine undercover, boot undercover and, with a change in spat shape, behind the front wheel arches. These fins optimise downforce to both enhance steering feel at high speeds and generate excellent traction.</p><p>As a result, the new LS boasts front and rear coefficient of lift figures of just 0.02 and 0.01 respectively. The new Lexus flagship&rsquo;s rear coefficient of lift &ndash; fundamental to high speed cornering stability &ndash; is 0.06 lower than that of its closest competitor.</p><p>Revised Multilink Suspension with New, 4-wheel Interlock AVS</p><p>The Lexus LS was the first vehicle in the premium automotive segment to adopt a multi-link configuration to both front and rear air suspension systems.</p><p>The air suspension system for the new LS has been further refined and evolved: A 6% increase in the lateral rigidity of the bushings has enhanced yaw responsiveness. The rebound spring design has been changed to a non-linear, progressive type which minimises roll angle whilst maintaining optimum ride comfort. And the variable damping range has been expanded, helping to reduce excess roll at the moment of initial steering input.</p><p>In combination, these suspension refinements offer a more comfortable ride whilst, conversely, reducing roll angles and noticeably improving initial response to steering inputs.</p><p>The LS air suspension system works in co-operation with an Adaptive Variable Suspension system (AVS). In response to driving operation, vehicle body motion and road surface conditions, AVS automatically activates the adjustable damping force shock absorbers to fulfil a wide range of control functions.</p><p>The system gradually increases the damping force as speeds rise, combining low speed comfort with high speed driveability and stability; it increases front end damping force under braking to reduce front end dive; it increases rear end damping force to minimise squat during acceleration; and it continuously optimises vehicle posture and stability by adjusting the damping force to both inner and outer shock absorbers through a bend.</p><p>In addition, AVS automatically maintains optimum vehicle ground clearance irrespective of load weight and passenger distribution, and automatically lowers the LS during high speed driving to optimise the Lexus flagship&rsquo;s aerodynamic efficiency and stability.</p><p>In conjunction with the air suspension refinements in the new LS, a further evolution of AVS adds a 4-wheel interlock control and improved control software. Previously adjusting the performance of the suspension at each wheel independently, AVS now simultaneously suppresses the three-direction vibration of roll, pitch and heave at all four wheels, minimising any unpleasant vibration in the direction of roll.</p><p>As a result, the exemplary vertical vibration suppression performance of the current generation LS has been retained, whilst damping response has been made smoother and more highly controlled for an even flatter, more comfortable ride</p><p>Previously offering drivers a switch-operated choice of Comfort, Normal or Sport damper settings, AVS has now been fully integrated within a new, five mode Drive Select System, full described below.</p><p>Active Stabiliser System</p><p>Exclusive to the LS 600h F SPORT, an Active Stabiliser system features variable twist-torque anti-roll bars to effect enhanced body control and steering response precision during high-performance driving, without compromise to the Lexus flagship&rsquo;s legendary straight line ride comfort. In keeping with the Lexus Hybrid Drive central tenet of minimising energy consumption, the Active Stabiliser system remains inactive during straight line driving.</p><p>The system features an actuator centrally located on both front and rear anti-roll bars, capable of applying torque to both left and right hand sections of the bar. The twist force, applied independently to both front and rear stabiliser bars by the highly responsive system, controls vehicle roll motion, reducing body roll angle to promote improved vehicle stability, superior cornering performance and improved agility through enhanced steering response.</p><p>Enhanced Electric Power Steering with VGRS</p><p>In conjunction with the adoption of a new, smaller steering wheel with increased driving position adaptability, the power steering gear friction characteristics of the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS)-equipped Electric Power Steering (EPS) have been revised to improve steering feel and feedback, maximising the benefits of the numerous, agility-enhancing suspension revisions.</p><p>Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) can vary the steering gear ratio by more than 30%. The gear ratio can vary between 2.3 rotations lock-to-lock at very low speeds and 3.7 rotations at high speed.</p><p>The VGRS system promotes excellent driver feedback, with refined steering wheel operation at very low speeds, reduced understeer feel and enhanced steering adjustment response when cornering, and minimal steering angle adjustment required when changing lanes.</p><p>The VGRS system actuator is linked to the Lexus flagship&rsquo;s sophisticated Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management control system (VDIM) which helps maintain vehicle stability with minimum driver input. VGRS also cooperates with the Pre-Crash Safety system&rsquo;s Emergency Steering Assist system in providing a quicker steering response once an obstacle is detected in front of the car.</p><p>Improved Brake Feel and Power.</p><p>The new LS remains the only car in the segment to feature an electro-hydraulic braking system. Its adoption not only elicits a reduction in overall brake system weight, but also allows for a more precise brake force distribution, which favours the optimum operation of VDIM.</p><p>The Electronically Controlled Braking system (ECB) has been revised to offer drivers superior braking response and effectiveness, and enhanced feel to brake pedal operation.</p><p>The brake pedal stroke has been shortened to promote a faster response, and the pedal pressure required has been reduced to maximise the effectiveness of applied pedal operation force.</p><p>The contact surface angle of the brake pedal has been changed to reduce the ankle articulation required at the top of the pedal stroke, allowing for a smoother foot transition from throttle to brake pedal, with less ankle bending. The contact surface radius of the pedal has also been changed, moving the foot contact point to the centre of the pedal for more natural brake operation.</p><p>ECB features powerful, 357 mm discs to the front and 337 mm discs to the rear, both with a spiral fin ventilation, and fitted with high grip coefficient brake pads to increase judder-free high speed braking efficiency. The system&rsquo;s high heat radiation architecture features a change to the shape of the front brake duct, the resultant improvements in cooling efficiency suppressing the heat-elicited build-up of brake fade.</p><p>Newly Adopted Drive Mode Select</p><p>The new LS adopts a further Lexus first, Drive Mode Select, which features up to five switchable driving modes &ndash;ECO, COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT S and SPORT S+, optimising the driver&rsquo;s preferred combination of economy, comfort, performance and handling characteristics.</p><p>LS models not equipped with AVS feature a three-mode Drive Mode Select system, offering drivers a choice of ECO, NORMAL and SPORT settings.</p><p>A number of previously introduced, independent systems such as AVS are now consolidated within the system to enhance ease of use; changing modes being simply and quickly implemented via a console-mounted, turning dial selector switch.</p><p>By controlling related systems to minimise energy use, ECO mode provides a fuel-efficient, environmentally-conscientious driving experience. ECO mode modifies throttle response and engine power output in response to accelerator pedal inputs, reducing both to maximise fuel efficiency. It also automatically limits the voltage of the LS full hybrid&rsquo;s Power Control Unit (PCU), whilst simultaneously providing comprehensive control over the air conditioning system and seat heaters.</p><p>The newly added COMFORT mode changes the suspension characteristics to provide a smoother, more comfortable straight line ride, in the same manner as operating the AVS system switch on the current model.</p><p>SPORT and SPORT S modes tap into the full potential of the powertrain, maximising throttle response and engine power output to accelerator pedal inputs, to combine a more sporting drive with no loss of ride comfort.</p><p>SPORT S+ combines this enhanced performance with adjustment to both the chassis and steering control systems. AVS automatically increases the difference between inner and outer shock absorber damping through corners by approximately 20% to further reduce vehicle roll. Simultaneously, the Active Stabiliser system engages the front and rear anti-roll bars, and the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system automatically reduces the steering gear ratio by approximately 10% whilst the Electric Power Steering (EPS) increases steering assist torque by some 4%. The transmission will now automatically downshift during hard braking for a corner, hold a lower gear through the corner for greater control, and then offer drivers a greater power response to full acceleration when exiting the corner.</p><p>The engine note of the new LS has also been tuned to create a pleasing, more sporting sound under full throttle acceleration. The sound has been painstakingly balanced, with a significant reduction in high and middle-high frequencies, as well as a smaller reduction in low frequency sound to reduce engine booming noise.</p><p>Enhanced V8 and Full Hybrid Powertrain Efficiency</p><p>The 4.6 litre V8 and the full hybrid powertrain of the new LS have been enhanced to improve their efficiency, boost power and lower CO<sub>2</sub> emissions.</p><p>Both units adopt low viscosity engine oil, a low resistance differential gear and completely revised control systems, including the air conditioning system, and benefit from low Rolling Resistance Coefficient (RRC) tyres. In addition, the full hybrid powertrain features more efficient energy regeneration during deceleration. LS 460 models further benefit from a reduction in agitation loss in the oil pan and, on AWD models, reduced exhaust resistance.</p><p>As a result, LS 460 engine output has increased by 5 kW (AWD &ndash; 2 kW), and both powerplants generate less CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in the European combined cycle, the V8 achieving a level of 249 g/km and the full hybrid just 199 g/km.</p><p>The most technologically advanced internal combustion engine ever to have been developed by Lexus engineers, the LS 460&rsquo;s 4,608cc V8 engine is a showcase of precision mechanical engineering. Featuring a Dual-pipe Intake System, an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), D-4S stoichiometric direct injection and third-generation Dual VVT-i.</p><p>It generates the highest specific output amongst normally aspirated V8 units in the premium automotive segment, now developing 285 kW/387 DIN hp at 6,400 rpm (AWD - 272 kW/370 DIN hp), and maximum torque of 493 Nm at 4,100 rpm. Mated to the world&rsquo;s first 8-speed automatic transmission, it will accelerate the LS 460 from 0-100 km/h in only 5.7 seconds and from 80-120 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The LS 460 will travel from a standstill to 400 m in 13.8 seconds, and on to a top speed of 250 km/h.</p><p>The LS 600h was the world&rsquo;s first vehicle to feature a full hybrid V8 powertrain, combining a technologically peerless 5.0 litre petrol engine with a powerful, high-output electric motor, a large-capacity battery pack, a dual-stage, electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) and permanent All-Wheel Drive.</p><p>This state-of-the-art Lexus Hybrid Drive system equips the LS 600h with an unparalleled balance of performance and environmental efficiency. It combines the 394 DIN hp/290 kW power of the 5.0 litre V8 with an electric motor output of 225 DIN hp/165 kW to generate a peak combined output rating of over 445 DIN hp/327 kW, making the LS 600h the world&rsquo;s most powerful full hybrid V8.</p><p>The LS 600h will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and on to an electronically governed 250 km/h. Equally impressive is the potent mid-range torque afforded by the system&rsquo;s powerful electric motor. Operating in tandem with the V8 petrol engine, it is capable of delivering maximum torque of 300Nm instantaneously, and seamlessly, from a standstill. This characteristic is most beneficial in mid-range performance during overtaking manoeuvres, and the Lexus LS 600h will accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in just 4.2 seconds.</p><p>Conversely, the LS 600h also proves substantially more frugal than comparable luxury saloons, returning a class-leading combined fuel consumption figure of 8.6 l/100 km (fuel consumption on a par with that of a 3.5 litre engined vehicle), CO<sub>2</sub> emissions of 199 g/km, and exceptionally clean exhaust gases.</p><p>All-Wheel Drive</p><p>Fitted as standard to the LS 600h and available on LS 460 models, the all-wheel drive system features a central, permanently engaged, Torsen<sup>&reg;</sup> Limited Slip Differential (LSD) which distributes drive power between the front and rear axles.</p><p>Because both Type A and Type B Torsen<sup>&reg;</sup> differentials provide equal, 50:50 torque distribution between front and rear axles, Lexus engineers developed a highly compact, Type C Torsen<sup>&reg;</sup> Limited Slip Differential for use in the LS, its 40:60 rear axle bias in torque distribution successfully suppressing understeer whilst still delivering the rear wheel drive characteristics of ride comfort and acceleration stability essential to a dynamic, premium segment saloon.</p><p>Moreover, the Type C differential&rsquo;s highly responsive torque distribution qualities are continuously controlled and, optimised according to driving conditions, can be varied from between a 48:52 to a 32:68 split between axles. This further enhances the Lexus hybrid flagship&rsquo;s grip, traction and cornering stability under acceleration to class-leading levels.</p><p>Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM)</p><p>The new LS is equipped with the latest generation of Lexus&rsquo; state-of-the-art Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. Discussed fully in the &lsquo;SAFETY&rsquo; chapter, VDIM integrates the LS&rsquo;s Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB), Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) active safety systems with the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) systems.</p><p>Unique to the LS 600h, the full hybrid drive-train&rsquo;s Driving Response and Acceleration Management System (DRAMS) also affords VDIM unprecedented interaction with both engine and transmission, employing engine and electric motor output control to effect a faster, smoother and more precise response to situations involving the possibility of a loss of traction, such as mid-corner gear changes.</p><p>Whereas conventional active safety systems are only activated immediately after a limit of the vehicle&rsquo;s performance envelope has been reached, VDIM progressively engages before that limit is realised. As exemplified by numerous revolutionary developments designed to help avoid or mitigate accidents through intelligent anticipation, the LS range has consistently offered an outstanding array of sophisticated, integrated, active and passive safety technology.</p><p>2003 marked the introduction of Lexus&rsquo; ground-breaking, millimetre wave radar-based Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS), and the sophistication and operating parameters of the system have been continually enhanced with each new generation of the LS.</p><p>The new LS enhances pedestrian safety through a newly developed Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), and an upgraded Advanced Pre-crash Safety system (A-PCS) with collision avoidance assist, which has the ability to help the driver detect moving pedestrians under a wide range of city and highway speeds, by day or night</p><p>An enhanced Lane-Keep Assist system (LKA) introduces yaw rate feedback control to help&nbsp;correct deviations caused by road camber changes and crosswinds. And the enhanced Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Lexus Night View are also available to help improve the driver&rsquo;s visibility.</p><p>Advanced Pre-Crash Safety (A-PCS) System</p><p>The new LS upgraded Advanced Pre-Crash Safety (A-PCS) System with collision avoidance assist is amongst the most advanced automotive pre-collision active safety systems in the industry. It is designed to assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating collisions with vehicles and pedestrians under a wide range of city and highway speeds, by day or night.</p><p>The Advanced Obstacle Detection system combines information identified by millimetre wave radar, near infrared projectors and a stereo camera to help detect a wide range of obstacles with precision by day or night.&nbsp;Because many pedestrian collisions occur after dark, the A-PCS night detection capabilities are key enhancements to the effectiveness of this system.</p><p>The LS Advanced Obstacle Detection provides upgraded recognition controls for analysing images from stereo cameras, which now allows the enhanced A-PCS system to function at a wide range of vehicle speeds &ndash;down to just 5 km/h- and, for the first time, to help detect moving, as well as stationary pedestrians, by day or night.</p><p>Having identified an obstacle in front of the vehicle, A-PCS is designed to assess the likelihood of a collision based on the position, speed and trajectory of the object. If the system anticipates a high probability of collision, it activates a warning buzzer and a red screen &lsquo;BRAKE&rsquo; alert on the instrument binnacle Multi-Function Display.</p><p>Simultaneously, the new A-PCS will automatically activate several integrated safety systems: the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) Emergency Steering Assist -to help improve the vehicle&rsquo;s response to the driver&rsquo;s steering input, the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) &ndash;to stiffen the dampers, both to assist in controlling front end &ldquo;nose dive&rdquo; when Pre-Crash braking is engaged to help increase the responsiveness of the vehicle to evasion steering inputs, the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system -to increase vehicle stability during an evasive manoeuvre, and the Pre-Crash Brake Assist system (PBA) &ndash;to increase emergency braking force when the driver presses the brake pedal.</p><p>If the system subsequently determines that a collision is unavoidable, A-PCS then activates the Pre-Crash Seatbelt (PSB) &ndash;pre-tensioning the seatbelts through the motorised uptake of loose seat belt webbing to improve the initial restraint performance. If the relative speed between the driver&rsquo;s vehicle and the obstacle ahead exceeds 40 km/h, the system automatically applies the brakes and brake assist to slow the vehicle and help to reduce the severity of a collision.</p><p>In the event that the relative speed between the driver&rsquo;s vehicle and the obstacle detected ahead does not exceed 40 km/h, if the driver does not take corrective action after receiving the alarm alert, the system automatically brakes brakes to help avoid a collision. At these relative speeds, the system is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop to avoid a collision.</p><p>Because A-PCS has increased the maximum braking power of the existing system to approximately 1 G and reduced the time to achieve maximum deceleration to within a second, it significantly improves the chances of a driver avoiding a collision at relative speeds of under 40 km/h.</p><p>This system is intended to assist drivers, but it is the driver&rsquo;s responsibility to be aware of the vehicle&rsquo;s surroundings.&nbsp;The system cannot prevent all collisions and performance is dependent upon road, weather, and vehicle conditions.</p><p>PCS Driver Monitoring System</p><p>The PCS Driver Monitoring System constantly monitors the movement of the driver&rsquo;s head when looking from side to side. If the driver turns his or her head away from the road ahead for a few seconds while the vehicle is in motion and the system detects that a collision is probable, the system will automatically bring forward the Pre-crash warning alarm. If the situation persists, it will briefly apply the brakes. If the driver does not then respond immediately, all PCS functions will engage.</p><p>An additional new PCS function monitors the driver&rsquo;s eyes, using two built-in, near infrared LEDs, the CCD camera of the Driver Monitoring System, and will automatically bring forward the Pre-Crash warning time if closed eyes are detected.</p><p>Rear Pre-crash Safety System</p><p>The Rear Pre-Crash Safety system operates whether the LS is stationary or in motion, and employs a millimetre-wave radar installed within the rear bumper to continually scan the area around the back of the vehicle. If the system determines a high probability of collision, it activates the rear hazard warning lights1 to alert the driver of the vehicle behind. If a collision is deemed unavoidable, the system automatically activates the Pre-Crash Safety Whiplash Injury Lessening (PCS-WIL) front headrests, which move forward and upward to reduce the risk of whiplash injury. (1 feature not available in all markets)</p><p>Upgraded Lane-keeping Assist (LKA)</p><p>An upgraded Lane-Keeping Assist system (LKA) offers enhanced lane-keeping assistance in response to external disturbances such as lateral road camber and crosswinds.</p><p>Subject to weather conditions, the LKA system monitors white line road markings via the Advanced Obstacle Detection System stereo imaging camera to determine whether the vehicle is drifting out of a given lane or off the road surface, and can provide an audible warning as well as steering power support to help the driver regain the correct road position.</p><p>The new, upgraded LKA system further incorporates a new yaw rate feedback control. Discrepancies between ideal and actual vehicle posture caused by uneven road camber or crosswinds are quickly detected, and steering torque is automatically adjusted in accordance with vehicle speed, enhancing the driver&rsquo;s ability to stay in a chosen lane.</p><p>LKA offers a choice of two functions, dependent on whether or not the&nbsp;Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is simultaneously in operation. If ACC is inactive, the system offers a Lane Departure Warning (LDW) function only. Operational from 50 km/h, should the system detect the possibility of a lane departure, LDW encourages the driver to steer back into the lane using an audiovisual warning and a function to provide brief corrective steering.</p><p>If LKA is activated while ACC is in operation, LKA further offers a Lane Keep (LK) function, operational at speeds of 75-180* km/h (*upper speed range differs by market). Once again, should the system detect the possibility of a lane departure, LK will activate a warning sound and apply corrective steering torque to assist the driver.</p><p>New Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)</p><p>An all-new feature for the LS model, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) plays a significant role in lane changing safety. BSM uses the LS PCS rear millimetre-wave radar to help monitor the vehicle rear side blind spots. The precision of the radar enables it to distinguish walls and other stationary objects from approaching vehicles.</p><p>This has made it possible to significantly lower the vehicle speed at which the system begins operating to just 16 km/h. This now makes the system usable when driving at low speeds, such as in traffic jams.</p><p>New Adaptive High-beam System (AHS)<u>[1]</u></p><p>The LS headlamps feature another Lexus first; a newly developed Adaptive High-beam System (AHS).</p><p>During night driving, AHS automatically switches between low, high and shielded beam modes. Using a windshield head-mounted camera to detect vehicles ahead, the system activates shutters within the headlamp to partially shield illumination in the area occupied by the vehicle. When the shielded beam is activated, the lamp unit automatically swivels to adapt the range of the shielded illumination for both single and multiple lane traffic as well as through corners.</p><p>By shielding, rather than switching off the high beam, AHS can increase the average time spent driving under high beam illumination, thus improving road visibility</p><p>Automatic High Beam</p><p>LS models not equipped with AHS feature an Automatic High Beam system. A camera located in the inner mirror detects light sources in front of the vehicle -including the headlamps of oncoming vehicles, the tail lamps of a vehicle ahead and street lighting- and the system will automatically switch the high beams on and off accordingly, reducing the need for manual operation of the dimmer switch.</p><p>Adaptive Cruise Control</p><p>Complementary to the PCS system, the LS also features an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system. The system offers two modes: (a) constant speed control and (b) vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, and is capable of operating at any vehicle speed between 0 and 200 km/h<u>[2]</u>.</p><p>Thanks to the millimetre-wave radar&rsquo;s low speed, close proximity distance measuring ability, it enables ACC to operate in slow or congested traffic, and can&nbsp;bring the Lexus vehicle to a complete standstill, and accelerate away once the road ahead is clear.</p><p>The constant speed control functions in the manner of a conventional cruise control system. Capable of differentiating between vehicles directly ahead of the Lexus and those in an adjacent lane, the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control system will automatically slow the LS, match the speed of the vehicle in front and, once the road is clear ahead, accelerate to the cruising speed previously selected by the driver.</p><p>The ACC system is intended to assist drivers, but it is the driver&rsquo;s responsibility to be aware of the vehicle&rsquo;s surroundings and drive the vehicle in a safe manner. The system performance is dependent upon road, weather, and vehicle conditions.</p><p>Lexus Night View System</p><p>The Lexus Night View system combines a windscreen head-mounted near infra-red camera and near infra-red projectors mounted within the headlamp clusters with a Night View ECU to display an image of the road ahead on the LS&rsquo;s 12.3&rdquo; centre console display screen.</p><p>Moving the image from the driver&rsquo;s instrument binnacle to the centre console screen&nbsp;offers drivers a larger display and an easier viewing angle.</p><p>With the camera constantly in operation and the near infra-red projectors activating at speeds over 15 km/h to enhance system efficiency, Lexus Night View will display an area up to 20 metres in front of the vehicle.</p><p>Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM)</p><p>The new LS model is equipped with the latest generation of the Lexus state-of-the-art Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, to enhance performance, traction control and vehicle stability.</p><p>With comprehensive status data provided by sensors throughout the vehicle, VDIM integrates the LS&rsquo;s braking and active safety systems&mdash;such as the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) systems.</p><p>By the application of simultaneous, integrated control of all the elements related to vehicle movement, including the drive train, brakes and steering, VDIM not only improves the activation of braking, stability and traction control systems, but is also able to further improve the overall kinetic performance of the vehicle.</p><p>Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) and VDIM Co-operation</p><p>VGRS co-operates fully with the LS&rsquo;s VDIM system in order to ensure a rapid and appropriate steering response&nbsp;under a variety of vehicle stability threshold conditions.</p><p>For example, on a road surface with differing degrees of grip on either side of the vehicle, sudden braking will cause the vehicle to pull towards the side with the higher friction coefficient. As well as improving the efficiency of the Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) systems, VDIM simultaneously activates the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and VGRS systems to automatically regulate the steering angle and counteract the disparate, left and right-side braking forces, minimising the driver steering input necessary to maintain straight line braking.</p><p>Similarly, when differing degrees of road surface grip cause the vehicle to pull towards the side of the lower friction coefficient under acceleration, VDIM automatically regulates the steering angle to help maintain vehicle stability with minimum driver input.</p><p>In the case of oversteer, the VDIM system automatically activates a counter-steer function within the EPS and VGRS systems which, operating in tandem with throttle and ECB system control, helps the driver to control a skid. Under such conditions, the combined use of brake and steering control reduces the deceleration inherent in traditional braking systems.</p><p>In moderate understeer conditions, VDIM combines engine output and braking control to automatically help stabilise the vehicle. In the case of excessive understeer, however, an increase in the steering gear ratio by the VGRS allied to steering torque assistance by the EPS automatically helps curb excessive turning of the front wheels and, in conjunction with the VDIM system&rsquo;s engine output and brake controls, in order to increase vehicle stability.</p><p>In all the above cases, VDIM activated VGRS can provide up to 3 degrees of additional steering input, effectively coaching the driver in the application of steering wheel input appropriate to the situation and, thereby helping maintain vehicle stability. Moreover, simultaneous VDIM control of the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system automatically regulates the suspension&rsquo;s shock absorber rates to both increase body control under extreme conditions and reduce vehicle nose diving under emergency braking conditions.</p><p>Additional Safety Features</p><p>Comprehensive airbag protection includes two-stage Dual Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front airbags including a twin-chamber passenger airbag, driver and front passenger knee airbags, front and rear side airbags, as well as full length side curtain airbags.</p><p>The Lexus LS advanced safety technology is intended to assist drivers, but it is the driver&rsquo;s responsibility to be aware of the vehicle&rsquo;s surroundings and drive the vehicle in a safe manner.
